Ryan Giddings, the owner/operator of and Master Automotive Technician at Church Street Garage, prides himself on raising the bar within the automotive service industry. 1.) Blanket Pricing for Oil Changes

If there’s set pricing for oil changes, then Ryan says to raise a red ag. “Vehicles are so speci c, every make, model, and manufacturer,” he explains, adding, “they have very exact specs on the oil, the lter, the quantity, and what needs to be done.” us, any blanket pricing means that “ ey’re usually using the most inexpensive uids and lters, then upselling on parts and labor to make a pro t,” expounds Ryan, continuing, “Church Street does not work this way.”

2.) Discounts & Specials

With the information from red ag #1 in mind, think about the idea behind “discounts” and “special pricing” for repair services. ese “special” prices are, usually, blanket ones too. Are you really getting a deal on your service? ink about it — if a service can be discounted by $20 and the business is still making a pro t, then they’re, once again, planning an upsell. A unique dining experience on the river, Hudson’s o ers a resplendent menu featuring both out-of-thebox creations and innovative interpretations of beloved classics. Indeed, with a keen attention to detail, the restaurant serves beverages and meals that you won’t nd anywhere else in our area!

For example, where else can you order a sushi roll made not only with sustainable ingredients, but also that includes a bacon and avocado ailoi?! I thoroughly enjoyed that particular dish — Hudson’s signature roll ($24) — which, other than the aioli, combines fresh crab, cucumber, corn, scallops, sriracha ginger aioli, tempura akes, and soy paper. Singularly avorful, the sushi is a fun mix of spicy, smoky, and sweet, with a textural complexity that further excites the palate. “It’s a fusion of Asian and American avors,” commented Abby, concluding, “that wonderfully subverts the status quo.”

For a more straightforward starter, try the Seafood Tower appetizer ($70 for 2 people). An impressive array of chilled oysters, jumbo shrimp, lump Maryland blue crab, and a large lobster tail, the tower is a breath of fresh air… and avors! Paul declared that the oysters were “excellent,” while Luis, who normally doesn’t like oysters, agreed, saying that Hudson’s were “so good that [he] would actually order them again.” Meanwhile, Abby took one forkful of all-white crab meat and exclaimed, “Oh, that’s good!” And the lobster? e sweet, succulent meat was extracted from the pesky shell for us, so eating it was both easy and enjoyable!

When it comes to an entrée, if you’d like something other than seafood, then try the New York Strip ($58), which is made using 14 oz. of phenomenal grass-fed, sustainably-raised, all-natural beef from a family farm, Brasstown Beef, in North Carolina. Served with ngerling potatoes, locally-sourced green beans, and a roasted bone marrow maître d’ butter, the steak is tender and seasoned just right. e butter adds a delectable richness, and Luis said, “Despite being a more seafood-focused restaurant, Hudson’s achieves a better NY strip than most other dedicated steakhouses.”

Seafood lovers, on the other hand, should take the leap and select what is arguably the most unique item on Hudson’s menu: the octopus “hotdog” ($19). Cornmeal-dusted con t octopus is layered with napa cabbage, black garlic aioli, avocado wasabi aioli, and

sesame seeds on a toasted brioche hotdog roll, then served with your choice of side (we highly recommend the yuca fries… di erent and delicious!). It may sound or look intimidating, but this creative twist on an American classic is “remarkably delicious,” according to Abby. e nicely-cooked octopus is salty without being shy, and boasts the perfect balance of a crunchy outside with a succulent inside that is “so freaking good,” said she.

More of a traditionalist? Order the seafood risotto ($41), a luscious, creamy combination of gigantic diver scallops, royal red shrimp, crab, baby heirloom tomatoes, chopped asparagus, and grilled corn. I was oored by the melt-in-yourmouth quality of the seared scallops, and could’ve easily eaten them on their own! e shrimp and crab were similarly fresh and tasty. Overall, I adored the instant comfort that this dish inspired within me. e rich cream, sweet seafood, and full vegetables all work in tandem to tantalize your tastebuds!

Another excellent option is one of the most popular items on the menu: Hudson’s Snapper ($38). e generous plate includes a huge piece of fresh, tempura snapper with coconut jasmine rice, baby bok choy, bell peppers, mango jalapeno coulis, and spicy coconut aioli. e mild sh rst pops with bites of spice, then is balanced by the avor of the subtly- oral rice. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with the coconut cream pie or Key lime pie. e former is a deconstructed version of the dessert, with crumbles of a “crust” that’s so and tastes like sweetness and cinnamon. I, normally, despise both the avor and texture of coconut; however, a er hearing the others rave about Hudson’s coconut cream pie, I had to try it. I can honestly say that it’s the one and only coconut dessert that I have ever actually enjoyed! It was a light and refreshing excursion to the tropics, with delicate notes of coconut that harmonize beautifully with hints of vanilla.

e Key lime pie, on the other hand, immediately enlivens your tastebuds with its tart sweetness, which is tempered by the honey and cinnamon in its graham cracker crust. “ at’s the stu ,” Luis complimented, “that makes you go ‘Mmmmm.’”

Indeed, Mero Mero o ers a modernized Mexican dining experience unlike any other in our community. It’s a vibrant, fun, and fresh setting complete with bright, electric color schemes, mixed media murals, and cheery Latin American-inspired music playing in the background… the absolute perfect place to grab a drink and/or delicious meal a er work. A er all, the restaurant boasts a wide-ranging menu, not to mention a full bar and extensive tequila collection that you won’t nd just anywhere!

A great appetizer to start you o is the Taste of Mexico ($15), which comes with bottomless warm tortilla chips and a generous sampling of salsa verde, guacamole, and queso dips. You receive complimentary salsa roja (chunky and addictively refreshing with bursts of heat) and chips already, so this starter gives you the opportunity to try a little bit of everything in terms of sauces/dips.

My favorite of all four options was the queso dip, with its thick, creamy, cheesy spiciness. Abby’s, on the other hand, was the salsa roja because of its “incredibly fresh taste.”

You absolutely, positively, and unquestionably have to order the Birria tacos (3 for $16). Full of extraordinarily tender adobo short rib beef, the tacos boast sweet onions and a rich cheese blend, and are served with a consommé that “is good enough to drink,” declared Abby. I took my rst bite and actually rolled my eyes to heaven, wondering how I could have possibly lived this long without eating these juicy, savory, cheesy avor bombs.

In the mood for an enchilada? Select the short rib one ($19), which includes a cheese blend, salsa roja, rice, and beans. e portion is very generous, so there’s no way you’ll leave the restaurant hungry! Abby raved about it, saying, “It’s amazing that they’re able to get so much avor into the meat!”

BIRRIA TACOS

We ordered these for the table, but honestly, each of us would have been happy to order our own plate of them… they are THAT good! Crisp on the outside, melt-in-your-mouth goodness on the inside, and a consommé that is literally simmered all day long to ensure maximum piquancy… how could you say no? Don’t go to Mero Mero without ordering the birria tacos!

For his main course, Luis took our server’s recommendation and ordered the pork carnitas quesadilla ($15). Genuinely, we have never seen such a thick quesadilla! Loaded with mouthwateringly juicy shredded pork and a luscious cheese blend, the quesadilla comes with shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream. “Oh wow,” Luis remarked upon taking his rst bite, “that’s a GOOD quesadilla! It doesn’t even need the lettuce or sauces. It’s perfectly seasoned on its own.” Luis was so complimentary about his meal, in fact, that Paul felt compelled to steal some of it! He heartily agreed with Luis’ assessment, and added, “It’s the best blend of savory and salty!”

If you’re not a meat eater, then you can de nitely still nd plenty of yummy, lling meals at Mero Mero! For example, the fajitas rice bowl ($16) with vegetables ($2) is a large portion of coriander rice, guajillo black beans, charred onions, red and yellow bell peppers, guacamole, salsa roja, and sour cream topped with corn, sweet potatoes, and zucchini. Colorfully presented, the dish rst dazzles your vision, then astounds your palate as all of the fresh, rustic avors charm you with their vibrancy. I especially loved the addition of the tender roasted chunks of sweet potato because they rounded out the more intense avor pro les of the peppers and onions. I was very happy with the vegetarian rice bowl not only when I was eating it at the restaurant, but also when I was enjoying round 2 of it at midnight.

Overoptimism can be as dangerous (or more) as over pessimism, that’s in a nutshell Jerome Powell’s message following the past FOMC meeting, where the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 0.25 percentage points to 4.75%. While making it clear that the economy is no where near out of danger, the Fed slightly signaled signs of a near future pivot by reducing its .50bps increase rate from last year. Investors should be more cautious than happy. Here is why.

Investors are ignoring many of the indicators and focusing on only one improving aspect of our economy, which is the slight decline in in ation. Others focus on the short-term shi s of the major indexes. Yes, the S&P 500 rose 1% immediately a er the Fed’s announcement. But comments such as “in ation is headed in the right direction”, or “the economy is not as bad as we thought”, that are becoming increasingly common by analysts and even the International Monetary Fund (IMF), create a misleading sense of calm and recovery, when in fact there’s little evidence supporting those assumptions.

e Fed uses the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to measure the changes in prices of purchases for consumption. is measure analyzes 8 sectors: Food & Beverage, Housing, Apparel, Transportation, Medical Care, Recreation, Education & Communication and Other Goods & Services. During the Fed’s announcement, Chair Powell explained that in ation only began to subside in the “Goods & Services” sector, which is only 14% of the entire measurement. Whereas in the other sectors such as Housing, over 40% of the basket, in ation decline has not even begun.

Speaking of the Housing sector, one of the largest homebuilders in the country KB Home, released their end of year earnings disclosing an alarming 68% of home cancellations in 2023. e housing sector is considered a “lagging” indicator, (a measure of the past results). But it can too be consider a “leading” indicator, in the sense that changes in the housing sector can give us some indication of future economic outlook. I don’t believe the housing sector, as well as the Food & Beverage, Apparel and Recreation sectors have experienced the full brunt of interest rate hikes and stubborn in ation.

e stock market is in not a sole reliable measure of our economy, as it’s very re ective of investor sentiment. Changes in the stock market do not signi cantly a ect most of the population, because only about 14% of American families have direct stock investments, according to the Federal Reserve, while 52% have some degree of stock market exposure in their retirement accounts through work. Jerome Powell is not concerned about the stock market, despite Wall Street’s pressures. ere are more concerning economic factors beyond the stock market and ignoring them can be regrettably foolish.

For What It’s Worth

It appears that my last two columns regarding the di culty which many patients are facing when attempting to make an appointment with their physician, or attempting to get someone to call them back regarding their medical issues, from doctors who are employed by the large hospital(s) in our communities have struck a nerve. I am used to receiving responses (thank you very much) from some of my articles, but never have I received so many at one time, and they keep coming. I thought this was a big problem for me personally, but apparently, it is an even larger problem than I thought. e emails that I have received are upsetting and at times heartbreaking. Elderly people without a doctor, when their physician of many years suddenly takes a leave of absence or retires, with no one to replace them. People who have to wait months, some nearly a year, to get on their physician’s schedule for treatment, some without the resources to know where to turn, and without guidance from the very institution with which they placed their trust.

In my opinion, and the opinion of others, the system is broken. We all deserve better than this. voice, and a conscience that realizes we all have to do our part to help, I reached out to the hospital to see if they employed a patient advocate who could eld all the calls/complaints and frustrations, and guess what? I found a department that allegedly can help. It is known as the Patient Experience O ce, and the phone number is 772-223-4995. A er two phone calls and several hours later, my call was returned by a very nice woman who was willing to give me the opportunity to voice my concerns. She said she understood the frustration of having to wait for appointments for months, or having a doctor who no longer works there, nor replaced, leaving patients without a physician. She told me her o ce is open to any and all concerns, and she does what she can to allay those concerns, and will contact individual physician o ces to attempt to get earlier appointments.

When I asked her why there is such a long wait to get appointments, even for long-standing patients with doctors of record, she said that with the growth of the community and the large in ux in the population coming to Florida, there are simply not enough doctors to see patients. I nd that answer truthful, but frankly, unacceptable. She also stated that many doctors have le this facility, and have not been replaced, but that they are “working on it.” I don’t doubt what she says is true, but why are doctors’ leaving, and by leaving, I mean leaving our community unattended? Something has to change. is should not be accepted

as the new normal. Sick people need to get well, it’s as simple as that. e question is, how can we do that without appointments or physicians? I am all for nurse practitioners. I am a nurse, rst and foremost, but nurses are not doctors, regardless of how intelligent they are (and they are!).

As well, I reminded the woman I spoke with that at the least, the front line of sta workers elding calls should be held to a higher standard of professionalism, by being kind, considerate and courteous, not rude and dismissive, like some of you have encountered. She agreed. So how much can she help? I don’t know, but personally, I still have to wait until the end of August to see my physician, even though I have been a patient of his for the past ten years.

For What It’s Worth, l appreciated her empathy on behalf of all of us, but it didn’t get me into my doctor any sooner. Maybe a few letters to the administration would be the incentive for change. en again, maybe not.
