Applied Canine Concepts: Where Dogs Come to Learn

Mostof us have heard, or even uttered, the common proverb, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But, at Applied Canine Concepts (a.k.a ACC), the experts are able to teach dogs of all ages and breeds!

ACC sits on a beautiful estate in Palm City Farms. In early 2022, the business added a brand-new, state-of-theart private dog training facility complete with airconditioned indoor/outdoor kennel suites, several shaded turn-outs, and multiple indoor climate-controlled training rooms. The worldrenowned owners of and trainers at ACC, Fabian Robinson and Gina Bishop, have been professional dog trainers for a combined 50 years! They maintain a clear and precise training methodology that teaches dogs how to think instead of react.

Interest in pet adoption has boomed since the pandemic, and new or inexperienced pet owners are not always prepared and/or may not have the proper resources to train their new furry friends. The board and train structure at ACC, which is mostly comprised of a two- or three-week package, is the answer to all of your dog training needs!

ACC Is Now Accepting New Clients for Boarding and Training Upon Evaluation!

Before enrolling in either program at ACC, Gina or Fabian will meet with a dog and owner to perform an evaluation. During this evaluation, the character and temperament of the dog are determined. In addition, the trainers learn about the owner’s goals and discuss how the dog will t into their lifestyle. In this short period of time, the Trainers at ACC will set an obedience foundation for the dog that the owners need to reinforce.

Once training is completed, the Trainers at ACC work exclusively with a dog’s owners to assure that the dog blends into the family as anticipated. Gina explains, “With our training, you will become the safe zone for your dog. You will never yell or say ‘no’ to your dog again! You are always positive.”

If you are a client at ACC, then you are a client for life! Gina, Fabian, and their staff welcome phone calls, videos, and visits back to the facility for refreshers, within the training parameters, free of charge well after the initial training has concluded. There is a reason why other local trainers recommend ACC to their clients... Gina says, “75% of the dogs we train are ‘re-trains’ that have been trained at other facilities.” In some cases, ACC is the last stop for a disobedient dog. Gina af rms, “We have saved hundreds of [dogs’] lives each year from euthanasia.”

According to the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the United States. But, most dogs are not aggressive. In fact, a dog’s behavior is in uenced by the relationship with its owner. “We train each dog differently because they [the dogs] are all individuals just like we are. Dogs need a leader with correct feedback to teach them how to live in our domestic society,” explains Gina.

The goal of the Trainers at ACC is to train a dog so it doesn’t appear trained; instead, the dog, while still maintaining its personality, just looks and acts like a good dog. As such, ACC developed its own “clean slate” program that focuses on “redoing” your relationship with your dog. This program bases the training on guidance and clarity. Gina states, “If you [the owner] can change your mind about how your dog learns, you can have success. Dogs learn by trial and error of behavior and feeling, not learning from talking or yelling, simply because dogs can’t speak back to you.” The “clean slate” training is completed with dogs of all breeds and all ages, starting as early as 4 months. It is also for all dog owners.

Though not an exact measure, a 20% stock market drop from the most recent high is what we call a “bear market”. It consists of lows, followed by lower lows, with minor highs that don’t reach the previous high.

e Holiday season quickly approaches and with it comes a lot of typical seasonality elements. e stock market is not oblivious to that. In nance, seasonality of the markets is a technical analysis approach that studies the stock market over a calendar year with the intent to establish predictable patterns. "Tis the season to be jolly"? Maybe.

Retail stores typically show strong numbers following the anksgiving holiday and especially a er Black Friday in the U.S. But when concerns over the economy accelerates, consumer spending tends to contract. Nevertheless, shoppers are expected to spend nearly $1trillion on gi s and holiday items this year.

Americans continue to spend amid in ation being at 8.2%. Enthusiasm over the upcoming holiday season is on the rise. A NASDAQ article from last month suggested that retailers expect consumers to spend the same amount of money this holiday season, but for a lesser number of goods. Yes, that means expect fewer presents, because the items you bought last year, for example, will now cost you at least 8.2% more when adjusted for in ation.

According to Salesforce, 37% of U.S. consumers will begin their shopping early to take advantage of deals prior to prices rising. e Dublin based company Accenture estimated that one-third (35%) of shoppers would stick to a holiday budget.

While all these factors may indeed a ect company revenues (therefore creating a stock price rise or decline), the reality of the holiday seasonal trends in the markets may be more associated to factors such as trading volume than anything else.     All things normal, you may see increased volatility in the stock market as we approach anksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve, as in years prior. ese uctuations can be largely attributed to the fact that the markets are closed on these days, and for half of Black Friday. Investors will try to get their trades in prior to the market close before the holiday and realize their gains and/or losses as they approach the end of the tax year. With the festivities going on, traders also spend less time trading, and more time enjoying other things such as quality time with loved ones, and less time trading. Yes, traders and investors are people too. Overall, the volume of trades is lower than normal during the holiday season.

Trends are not set in stone. 2022 has been year full of unprecedented shi s in the economy and increased uncertainty in the markets. While analysts are expecting volatility to settle down throughout the end of the year, other economic factors, social con ict, and political pressures will play a signi cant role in consumer sentiment.

Here we are again! It’s holiday season time, and I’ve been in the mood since July, thanks to Hallmark, which I know is cheesy, and the plots are transparent within the rst ve minutes, and the houses are decorated in so many lights no one would be able to a ord the electric bill, but hey, who cares, I still love it!

I noticed that men have barely tolerated Hallmark shows in past years, but this year must have them really reeling with Christmas in July, then Harvest for Fall, and now not one, not two, but three holiday channels twenty four hours a day till Christmas!

For those of you scratching your head, I’ll tell you what they are. Hallmark, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, and Great American Christmas, all with the same revolving actors playing di erent parts, but only slight variations in the themes. ere is always a bookstore movie, a corporate conglomerate coming into a small town to purchase a

bookstore, ranch, bed and breakfast, etc, and of course, a writer who has writer’s block, an executive who has lost his or her love for the holidays, and an enchanting bed and breakfast which is no longer solvent nancially.

So, you might say, what’s the attraction? It’s unexplainable, unde nable, but worth the time spent in front of the television, nonetheless. is is the time, if you’re married or in a relationship, that you de nitely want to have two television sets, preferably in a room where you will not be disturbed. ere may be no dinners served, no homework done, no desire to even leave the house, because Hallmark is your seasonal lover for the next few months.

For What it’s Worth, you can make the case that the entire family will bene t from you watching these mindless television shows, because it’s educational in a very long stretch of the concept of learning. You

are suddenly more creative, decorating the house at all hours of the night, putting ribbon on packages instead of just scotchtaping something together haphazardly, and rethinking the idea of adding fake snow to your decor. (Spoiler alert, don’t attempt it. Take it from me, you will spend all of January vacuuming it up!). Anyhow, give yourself this holiday vacation to come home from work, bring home an already cooked chicken, turn on Hallmark, and put your feet up. You deserve it!

Love at First Bite!

Bobby and Lisa Winch, owners of The Brick Oven Pizza Company, told Abby, Elaine, and me before we ate that “everything here is made with love.” It’s one thing to say something like that, but it’s another to prove it. Well, let me tell you, Bobby and Lisa went above and beyond in substantiating that claim, and I am now convinced that The Brick Oven is one of the best restaurants in this area.

We started with the cold antipasto salad, which the menu explained is large enough to feed 2-4 people. Well, it was not bbing. The salad was the Leaning Tower of Antipasto, piled high with artichoke hearts, black and Kalamata olives, mozzarella, roasted red peppers, mortadella, prosciutto, and more! The vegetables were fresh, the meat was deliciously salty, and the cheese was authentic Italian cheese that you can genuinely taste.

Next, both Elaine and Abby ordered medium cauli ower crust pizzas with various toppings. I selected the beggar’s purse. It came with the choice of either soup or salad, so I chose the soup of the day-- mushroom asiago.

The soup recipe, like many of the other menu options, is one that was passed down directly from Bobby’s Italian grandmother, and you can most de nitely tell. It was like liqui ed mushroom ravioli! There was a medley of avors-sweet, nutty, cheesy, earthy-- and it was thick, creamy, and brimming with meaty mushrooms. I wish I could meet Bobby’s grandmother so that I could shake her hand and congratulate her on being a culinary genius.

Abby’s and Elaine’s pizzas were loaded with their toppings. Elaine was so happy that she could have a nonbread crust, and said, “I’m on a Keto diet and was craving pizza. The cauli ower crust was beyond my expectations! I could not believe that it was really gluten-free and vegan!” Abby agreed, adding, “I wouldn’t have known it was cauli ower crust if I hadn’t ordered it myself. It was just as tasty and satisfying as regular pizza.”

The Brick Oven has great pizza, no question. But guys, their pasta is stellar too! The beggar’s purse is four cheese and pear stuffed pasta in a port wine cream sauce with sun-dried tomatoes and shiitake mushrooms.
