Markyour calendars for Saturday, October 15th and Sunday, October 16th to visit Heathcote Botanical Gardens for their 35th Annual Fall Garden Festival, which is set to be a fantastic, fun- lled oral event! “The great thing about the Fall Festival,” explains Alisia Kifer, Heathcote’s horticulturist who organizes the event, “[is] it’s so diverse! Grandmas and grandpas can bring their grandkids to keep them busy, plant enthusiasts can come and nd a special or rare plant that they haven’t seen, and nature enthusiasts who have or haven’t visited the gardens can see some of our latest updates and the plants that we have available!” This year will be the largest that the Fall Festival has ever been, and it will be held almost exclusively outside so you can enjoy all that our natural environment has to offer!

Plants & Trees for Sale

Heathcote will be selling a mix of 25-30 ornamental and native Florida plants, as well as 3-5 ft. palm tree varieties, all of which Alisia and her team of dedicated volunteers, including Ed and Marge Carlin and Justin McSweeney, have been nursing and propagating since the beginning of the summer. They will even have some potted bonsai trees available for purchase!

Additionally, many of the 30+ vendors at the festival will be selling even more types of plants and trees, including cosmos, milkweed, various types of fruit trees, beach daisies, orchids, and air plants. “We’re going into the growing season,” Alisia explains, continuing, “so now would be the time if you want to put a garden or veggie garden in to purchase [the plants] at a competitive price… [and] they’re going to thrive for you until next May because there’s not as much heat!”

The best part about shopping for plants and trees at Heathcote’s Fall Festival is that you will be supporting local businesses! Each and every vendor is native to Fort Pierce, the Treasure Coast, or Florida. Alisia af rms, “These people are your neighbors. They’re your friends. They’re the people you’re going to help and support.”

Fall Food & Fun for Everyone

At Heathcote Botanical Gardens’ Fall Festival, you will not only nd beautiful, quality plants and trees for sale, but you’ll also have the opportunity to listen to educational presentations (for children and adults) from local experts, enjoy tasty food and beverages, shop for jewelry and handmade art from talented local artists, and engage in fun activities, like face painting or fairy hair! This year’s festival will be more robust than ever before, with more vendors present than previous years and educational presentations occurring almost every hour each day.

The educational talks for adults will focus on topics such as bonsai pruning, wild re prevention, and the recent endangerment of the Monarch butter y species and how you can help. The Audubon Society will also be at the festival to do a presentation about local birds. And, on Saturday, Heathcote’s bonsai expert, Tom, will be conducting tours throughout the bonsai garden, telling stories about the trees and their history as well as sharing how he takes care of them.

For children, beyond the face painting and fairy hair vendors, there will be a sewing demonstration in Heathcote’s Pioneer House, which is a historically-accurate replica of the style of dwelling that Florida settlers used about 200 years ago. During this time, the kids will have the opportunity to learn more about why the Pioneer House looks the way it does, as well as how the settlers would have lived. For the younger kids, there will be a variety of creative activities.

In terms of food, the festival will have a variety of options. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, snacks, ice cream, meat from Adam’s Ranch, honey from the local Beekeepers Association, baked goods, lemonade, cookie dough, and much more!

Art lovers will also be excited to learn that they can begin buying tickets for Heathcote’s annual auction of a gorgeous mosaic created by local artist Anita Prentice, who you may know for her incredible mosaic benches that are spread throughout Fort Pierce. This year’s mosaic features a stunning image of a royal poinciana tree. The winner of the raf e will be announced at the end of Heathcote’s annual Garden of Lights event in the winter.

The Fall Festival is a free event that allows you to walk through and enjoy the entirety of Heathcote Botanical Gardens FOR FREE! In this upside down time in our lives, there has been an in ux, it seems to me, of individuals wanting to revisit simpler times, with less responsibility and more fun. If only that meant including a weekly movie, or making a special dinner to spice things up at home, that would be less dangerous than the trend that has crossed my ears more than a few times in the past year, namely, people connecting with old ames, needing the comfort of someone who isn’t their husband, someone who knew them when they were young and carefree, and it’s pretty easy to nd that once-special person because of social media. It is also a fantasy, which, with twenty-twenty hindsight, is treading on dangerous ground.

It begins innocently, of course, as all risky things start, with a causal “hi, how are you doing?”, and if the person on the other end is responsive, it morphs into all the “remember whens”, which no one in your current life can compete with. Suddenly your world seems brighter, lighter, happier, hanging on every word, and texts become covert phone calls with dreams of what could have been. Trust me when I say this, in most cases, the person who is going to be hurt the most, is you. Sure your old ame knows all the right things to say, gives you undivided attention, and makes you laugh, but I doubt that Casanova is as tantalizing to his own wife who is probably at home doing the dishes and his laundry.

e story is as old as the hills. Everyone wants something new, something bright and shiny, romantic words and endless promises of undying love, and people who are in a marital rut risk it all, over and over again. Let’s play this fantasy out… the wife suddenly can’t stand anything about her boring, lazy husband, and les for divorce. She dreams of the day she and her old boyfriend can be

together, but guess what? Nine times out of ten, he has a million reasons that he can’t move forward with his divorce. He can’t hurt his family, he doesn’t want to split the assets, and on and on, until the fairy tale becomes a nightmare.

So, For What It’s Worth, keep your dreams locked in a box where they can’t get lost or trampled on, and reignite the spark in your marriage. A er all, you must have been enamored with your spouse when you walked down the aisle, and perhaps, the hum-drum evenings have as much to do with you trying less, as it does with him ignoring you. Marriages go through ups and downs, and women think of jumping ship when the romance gives way to everyday drudgery, but even a boring marriage can be spiced up. A fantasy boyfriend rarely materializes.

Comfort Food for the Soul

Eating at Mable’s Place Southern Cooking brought back the Appalachian in me... I left saying “ya’ll” and “bless your heart” as frequently as when I lived in southwestern Virginia because the food and the atmosphere at Mable’s was so genuine. This authenticity makes sense because at Mable’s Place you’ll nd three generations worth of Southern soul food recipes!

You don’t just eat at Mable’s Place, you experience. You either order a basket meal or build your own meal by choosing which meat, rice, bread, and 2 sides you would like on your plate. Mable’s Place offers chicken, pork chops, turkey wings, neck bones, and sh every day, and has daily meat specials.

Abby and I both built our own meals. The special meat of the day was brown stew steak, so Abby ordered that along with gravy, yellow rice, cornbread, collard greens, and lima beans ($14.95). I went with the fried chicken, gravy, white rice, corn bread, macaroni & cheese, and green beans ($13.95).

Abby’s brown stew steak fell off the bone because it was so tender! She said, “this is amazing. You can tell that it was made with heart and soul.”

My fried chicken was incredible! I tore off a piece from the breast and juice literally ran down my hand. How did they make something fried into something so succulent? Also, I don’t know about you, but I don’t like my fried chicken with thick breading because it takes away from the avor of the meat. Well, no worries about that issue at Mable’s Place… the breading on the fried chicken was just enough to add an extra layer of spice without stealing the show from the superstar chicken!

Is it possible for a vegetable to taste like...something better than a vegetable? Because Abby’s collard greens and lima beans, as well as my green beans, tasted so good that we actually ate every last bite of them. My green beans not only tasted like green beans, but also had lovely notes of sweetness and saltiness. And, Abby’s collard greens were balanced with the perfect amount of vinegar and spice. Mable’s Place even cooks vegetables with gusto!

Then, there was the macaroni & cheese. Frankly, I cannot put into print what I would like to say because some might nd it a bit off-color, so suf ce it to say that I died and went to heaven when I ate Mable’s Place’s mac & cheese. I’m formally requesting that the restaurant start selling it in a large to-go vat so that I can eat it whenever I please (i.e. every day).

I could talk about Mable’s Place until the cows come home (e.g. I’m begging you to try the cornbread… it’s divine), but there’s only so much room on these pages. So, I’ll just say this-- ya’ll should be xin’ to eat at Mable’s Place Southern Cooking as soon as possible. I promise you’ll nd incredible comfort food that will feed your stomach and your soul!
