A word about the actors. Austin Butler said in an interview he practiced for 8 months before he read for the part, and then for another two years before he actually starred in the movie. To say he was fantastic might be the understatement of the year, and Tom Hanks, well, who doesn’t love Tom Hanks in everything he plays. I’m going out on a limb and for what its worth, I think this movie will get the Academy Award for best picture, Best Actor to Butler, and Best Supporting Actor to Hanks. But then again, you’ll have to decide for yourself, a er you see one of the best lms in quite a while!

Elvis quickly learned from them, their spirituality, and their music, and how they allowed the music to dictate their movements. It was real and genuine, and he quickly took on those qualities. Some might say he stole their music, but the movie goes on to show that he never took anything that he wasn’t given, and always recognized his humble beginnings and the folks he called his friends. I was also astounded to realize the co-dependent relationship Elvis had with his hard-to-please mother, and his kind, but passive father, and how he singlehandedly, attempted to take on the nancial responsibilities of just about everyone he came in contact with. He loved his wife and daughter dearly, but didn’t put them rst, which he regretted. To me, he was a good guy, who searched for love his entire life, and then, it took everything from him and nally killed him. Not that he didn’t have the responsibility of taking better care of himself, but you will come to love and care for him for who he was, a mere mortal man, if you don’t already.

In my last article I promised I would not do another movie review, that my reviews are less than once a year, if that, and besides, who am I to decide what is good and what is not. But, like eating my words, here goes another full plate. I rented the movie ELVIS, starring among others, Austin Butler as Elvis, and Tom Hanks as Colonel Parker, his manager. As a teenager during the era that Elvis came to be, I was taken by his talents, not so much obsessed like the screaming teen girls that swooned and fainted every time he came onstage, but still, mysti ed by his ability to command a presence and move his body the way he did. All I knew about him was nothing more than a good looking man with a great voice, (okay, and great body).ere are plenty of movies about Elvis, but none that I know of that were told from the narration of Colonel Parker, the man who discovered him, put him in the spotlight, and was also hated by many for allegedly extorting much of the funds. Is it possible for a vegetable to taste like...something better than a vegetable? Because Abby’s collard greens and lima beans, as well as my green beans, tasted so good that we actually ate every last bite of them. My green beans not only tasted like green beans, but also had lovely notes of sweetness and saltiness. And, Abby’s collard greens were balanced with the perfect amount of vinegar and spice. Mable’s Place even cooks vegetables with gusto! Then, there was the macaroni & cheese. Frankly, I cannot put into print what I would like to say because some might nd it a bit off-color, so suf ce it to say that I died and went to heaven when I ate Mable’s Place’s mac & cheese. I’m formally requesting that the restaurant start selling it in a large to-go vat so that I can eat it whenever I please (i.e. every day). I could talk about Mable’s Place until the cows come home (e.g. I’m begging you to try the cornbread… it’s divine), but there’s only so much room on these pages. Eating at Mable’s Place Southern Cooking brought back the Appalachian in me... I left saying “ya’ll” and “bless your heart” as frequently as when I lived in southwestern Virginia because the food and the atmosphere at Mable’s was so genuine. This authenticity makes sense because at Mable’s Place you’ll nd three generations worth of Southern soul food recipes! You don’t just eat at Mable’s Place, you experience. You either order a basket meal or build your own meal by choosing which meat, rice, bread, and 2 sides you would like on your plate. The special meat of the day was brown stew steak, so Abby ordered that along with gravy, yellow rice, cornbread, collard greens, and lima beans ($14.95). I went with the fried chicken, gravy, white rice, corn bread, macaroni & cheese, and green beans Abby’s($13.95).brownstew steak fell off the bone because it was so tender! She said, “this is amazing. You can tell that it was made with heart and soul.”
My fried chicken was incredible! I tore off a piece from the breast and juice literally ran down my hand. How did they make something fried into something so succulent? Also, I don’t know about you, but I don’t like my fried chicken with thick breading because it takes away from the avor of the meat. Well, no worries about that issue at Mable’s Place… the breading on the fried chicken was just enough to add an extra layer of spice without stealing the show from the superstar chicken!
