For What It’s Worth Hi. Me again, continuing my theme of what to expect when going to the hospital.

Remember how nice hospital beds used to be? The mattresses were thick and plush, and when the head and foot of the mattress was raised, it was like lying in a comfortable cocoon of security, knowing that all your medical needs were going to be taken care of. Well, sorry to tell you, but not anymore. The last hospital bed I spent three nights on was no thicker than a blowup mattress, and twice as hard. The blankets were coarse and threadbare, and the sheets were starched and smelled like Clorox. As if it wasn’t bad enough to be in pain, or recuperating from surgery, it was almost a relief to think about doing self-care at home, than to endure the discomfort of a no-frills hospital. I say this with all respect, and I believe I can say it, considering that I spent many years as a hospital nurse meeting my patient’s needs and making them as comfortable as possible.

I’m not sure when all comfort was tossed out the window, but surely hospitals must be making some type of profit, what with the room rates, medication charges, and charges for doctors who pop their heads in, most of whom you have never met and will never meet again, and who charge exorbitant rates to your insurance. Let’s take hospital gowns, for instance. For those of you who have never had the pleasure of trying to sleep in one, I’d be happy to describe the experience. The neck of the gown has a tendency to ride up and strangle you while you lie helplessly in your bed, the back of which is opened to the air, and bunches up underneath your back as you try to get comfortable. Surely, there must be a more comfortable material than military-grade fabric to make your sleeping a little more pleasurable, and if someone could possibly figure out, in the twenty-first century, that velcro closures might be more comfortable than lying on knots of string, it would be a step in the right direction.

Throughout all this, one must keep up their cheery disposition, and compliment the staff, especially if you want to later ask for a favor, such as an extra blanket or a cup of tea. It is not easy being a patient, not easy realizing that your body has begun to betray you with aches and pains, and not easy to remain stoic in the face of unnecessary discomfort, but For What its Worth, I think there is an entire revamping of the system than needs to be addressed.

However, I raise a glass to the doctors and nurses who keep us alive despite being overworked and under-staffed.

Okeechobee Adventist Christian School: Educating for Eternity

he laid-back days of summer vacation are quickly coming to a close, and the start of a refreshing new school year is about to commence at the Okeechobee Adventist Christian School, which has been providing quality Christian education in Okeechobee for more than 85 years.

Sometimes, a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t quite make sense when it comes to educating children. Based on your child’s needs, and your family’s priorities, some schools may be a better match than others. If you’re looking for a small, customized educational experience for your child, then look no further than Okeechobee Adventist Christian School.

Principal of and teacher at Okeechobee Adventist Christian School, John Sufficool, describes the school as a small, familyoriented institution that offers one-on-one instruction. It is the perfect setting for students who desire personalized instruction, which is sometimes difficult to achieve in larger schools.

John grew up in the Adventist school system, and has been teaching in multi-grade schools for over 30 years.

He earned a BS degree in Elementary Education from Southwestern Adventist College in Keene, Texas, as well as an MS degree in Inclusive Education from Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee.

John then moved to Okeechobee in 2000. This year will be his 23rd in the single-room, one-teacher, multi-grade Okeechobee Adventist Christian School, where classes resume on Monday, August 8th.

Small But Mighty Okeechobee Adventist Christian School is a part of the Florida Conference of Education and the North American Division of Seveneth Day Adventists, a nonprofit organization that serves as the administrative body for churches, companies, mission groups, and a system of over 900 K-12 schools educating and enriching the lives of close to 85,000 students nationwide. The Okeechobee Adventist Christian school is open to all students regardless of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, gender, and sexual orientation. The curriculum is based on the Bible, and the goal is to prepare students to be productive citizens by nurturing each one’s growth as a whole person: academically, physically, spiritually, and socially.

Okeechobee Adventist Christian School strives to give Christians wisdom, not just knowledge.

As parents, we realize our children learn in many different ways. The small, personalized setting at Okeechobee Adventist Christian School allows students in Grades 1st-8th to really connect to personal experiences and develop a conceptual understanding based on rigorous and engaging curriculum that has been developed by the Florida Conference of Education. John explains, “We have one-to-one computers. Each student has their own PC or iPad.” He goes on to say, “We use computer software programs that include coding and reading applications that students can use at school and home.”

to 3:00PM, and follow a calendar similar to the public school system. John explains that he likes to incorporate two or three large field trips into the year as well, based on particular units of study. For example, the students visited the Kennedy Space Center and Sea World based on what they were learning in science. The Mathematics, Science, Reading, and Social Studies curricula are all standardized by the Florida Conference of Education, so all of the students that attend schools governed by the conference receive the same educational experience.

Big Ideas Math, the textbook that has been used at the school for the last 3 years, is widely used by school systems looking for a universal design for learning that creates a fun and innovative way of comprehending Mathematics.

The Social Studies and Reading curricula focus on non-fiction and, in particular, historical fiction. A standard grading policy is used, and report cards are administered quarterly; however, parents can access grades at any time through the electronic grading system.

There are parent-teacher conferences held at Okeechobee Adventist Christian School, but John affirms, “Being small [the school], I can handle a problem right away. Many times, I can talk to a parent when I see them at the end of the day.”

Excellent Academic Achievement Study findings, performed by The CognitiveGenesis, of Adventist academic achievement at the elementary and high school levels concluded that, “In all grades, in schools of all sizes, and in subjects, students in Adventist schools outperformed the national average.” The study also showed that “The longer students stayed in the Adventist school system, the more they gained in achievement and ability.”

These are fantastic findings, but more importantly, they are the accolades that John and his school have received from the families of Okeechobee Adventist Christian School.
