What to Expect

As a new patient, your rst visit to the Professional Audiology Associates of ce, which is handicap-accessible, will be easygoing and uncomplicated.

Acadia, the of ce’s friendly receptionist, and the knowledgeable Dr. Poplarchick will both warmly welcome you to the practice. From there, the doctor will take you back to her of ce to go over your comprehensive case history, asking questions to determine what problems you are experiencing and why. Next, you and Dr. Poplarchick will enter the testing room, where the doctor will look into your ears. As she looks inside your ear, she projects an image of it onto a large TV in the room so that you can follow along with her diagnosis. The doctor will also check the pressure in your ears to ensure that there are no issues, such as uid behind your eardrums. Finally, you will undergo a full and complete hearing test inside the comfortable, handicap-accessible examination booth.

Once your hearing test is completed, you and Dr. Poplarchick, along with any family or friends who are with you, sit down again to discuss the results and determine whether you are a candidate for hearing aids. If not, then your next step may just be a referral to an ear, nose, and throat doctor. It will take a few tweaks to the hearing aids to get everything just right, but once it’s all settled, patients “see the difference right away,” says Dr. Poplarchick.

From there, every six months, you should de nitely be receiving a check up of your ears, as well as a cleaning of both your hearing aids and your ears. It’s important to maintain these appointments because the doctor will not only make sure that your ear is clean, clear, and healthy, but will also look over your hearing aid’s cleanliness. “It is a tiny little electronic that you’re wearing in your ear. It’s prone to moisture, wax, and dust, so you de nitely want to keep it in good shape,” explains Dr. Poplarchick.

Additionally, you should get a hearing test each year to keep up with any changes to your prescription. Of course, if you are noticing any changes on your own, then Dr. Poplarchick encourages you to contact the of ce at your earliest opportunity so that they can adjust your hearing aids accordingly.

Life is becoming more and more di cult to navigate, it seems to me. Too many choices! Even the small stu ba es me at the grocery store, the drug store, home depot, Lowe’s and on and on. For example, I don’t know the last time any of you have gone into a home supply store to purchase a light bulb, which a few years ago was a no-brainer. Your bulb blew, you know the wattage you needed, you go to the store, pick the package up, the wattage was on the front, and check out was a cinch. Now, the row of light bulbs goes on forever, and I cannot ever understand what it is they are trying to sell me. Daylight, warm light, bug light, intense light, so light…etc. Indoor, outdoor, indoor/outdoor, clear glass, frosted glass…I know you know what I’m talking about!

When was the last time you went to the grocery store for a simple package of cookies? I spent een minutes wondering what kind of cookie I should chose, because the entire row is stu ed with every possible color, avor, thickness, and size. Gluten free, sugar free, crunchy, so …some which have also become cereals…that seems to be the latest trend…if you love your cookie, you can probably nd it in the cereal aisle, posing as breakfast, so you can have it with a bowl of milk for breakfast..

For me, the worst is purchasing a mattress…Just when you’ve found a mattress you love, it’s time to change it for a new, less lumpy one, but the problem is, although the manufacturer may be the same, Sealy, Serta, Beauty Rest, etc. the name and style number of the mattress you love has been changed to a completely di erent name. When I asked about this, one salesperson said it is not uncommon for mattress names to be changed or eliminated, sometimes every six months, thereby causing immense confusion. As well, I don’t see how lying on a mattress in a showroom can possibly give you all the information needed in ve minutes, and it usually doesn’t. If I worked in a mattress store I would be completely bald from pulling my hair out, knowing full well that the mattress someone choses is going to be coming back in a month, and another one purchased. Imagine how ludicrous it is to spend ve minutes lying on a model, and eight hours sleeping in bed, tossing and turning, knowing you made the wrong decision and lying awake the rest of the night hoping for just one more chance…and that’s usually all you get…one more chance. If your second choice (usually a er having a miserable 30 days on the mattress before it can be exchanged) doesn’t work out…well, too bad. You’re stuck with it!

It’s the same with purchasing a car. Turn the clock back several decades to Ford, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Plymouth and a few others with perhaps a choice or two in each category. Now, there are a zillion cars, and sub-zillion models, to test drive, and you are expected to spend anywhere between twenty-thousand dollars to over one hundred thousand dollars for a car you might not even like a er a week or two. Not to mention, that if you’re purchasing a new car, the minute you drive it o the lot, it has depreciated! Yet, we all seem to accept this. ink of it. One of the major purchases aside from a house, is essentially made blind, and guaranteed to go down in value.

For What it’s Worth, this should not be the norm, and yet it is, for every household in America. It’s no wonder we’re all exhausted at the end of the day, hoping for rest. Unfortunately, many of us will not get a good night’s sleep on the mattress we bought!

More Than Just Dance

Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter

The Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter is truly a labor of love. During the summer of 2013, Atlantic Arts Academy, which had been in existence for 10 years, suddenly went out of business. en, Trina Ginossi decided to take action. For 8 of those 10 years, her own children had taken classes there, in everything from guitar to dance and acting. ey loved it, so when its doors closed, Ginossi decided to keep it alive for them and the hundreds of other kids in the community who loved to perform. For the next 11 months, the almost 10,000 square foot space sat vacant. Ginossi began to round up the previous teachers and seek out investors. She nally teamed up with another mom, Monica Leonhardt, whose children had also taken classes at the previous studio. Together with their families, they brought the studio back to life. ey chose the name Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter. “We are about all of the performing arts and community,” Ginossi says.

Trina and her husband, Alex, along with Monica and her husband, Erich, teamed up over the summer to prepare for a grand opening in the Fall of 2014. “ at was a long year,” says Ginossi. However, Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter is going strong and now, several years later, not only have previous Atlantic Arts students returned, but they also have many newcomers.

What makes the Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter di erent? ey are about more than just dance. ey o er private voice and music lessons, including drums, piano, ute, and guitar. ey also provide acting instruction and improv, along with dance classes including jazz, hip hop, aerial silk, tap, musical theater, contemporary, and ballet. is studio is the perfect t for families with children who are interested in the arts. e concept is when siblings come in, one can do a dance class while another can do a guitar, piano, or acting lesson. ere is something for everyone. e Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter is a family-owned and operated studio that welcomes all levels of students’ interests, from professional to recreational. Some students are there to become a professional one day, while others come for fun. “We’re about embracing the love of the arts. We promote that to our students. Everybody supports each other,” Ginossi says. e Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter is less about competition and more about nding and embracing a love for the arts.

e teachers, who are all working professionals, also have a love for this place. e head of their dance and musical theater department, Elizabeth Brockwell, has a degree in musical theater and is a working actress herself. Jesse Furman, head of the acting department/acting coach, has been on several TV

shows and commercials, and is a working actor, as well as a founding member of a very popular Improv troupe, e JOVE. Je Harding, head of the music department and a guitar teacher, has a band and performs locally. “ ey all work professionally in their area,” Ginossi explains. e students come for the teachers. “ ey each have their own following,” she adds.

e Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter also o ers many special events. Each year, they put on a dance showcase, two music showcases, two acting shows, and two musical theater shows. e musical theater department has performed many shows, including Grease Bye Birdie department has performed many shows, from the Christmas Carol members perform in community events like Arti Gras, Italian Fest, and Turtle Fest. ey also attend dance competitions within the state of Florida.

e state-of-the-art facility also boasts a 150-seat theater that is home to the locally famous comedy improve troupe e Jove. Many well-known comedians perform at the facility as well, such as Bobby Collins and Mark Price, to name a few. Recently, the studio hosted the rst album release concert for the local acoustic guitar duo Leafy Greens. ey also host the Oceanagraphic acoustic guitar concert every year. Enthusiasts from all over the state of Florida attend to see this sold-out concert. “ e intimate, blackbox theater is a great venue and there is not a bad seat in the house,” a rms Ginossi. She adds, “It is a great community theater, a staple in Jupiter.”

When asked what her favorite thing is about the Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter, Ginossi has a hard time choosing just one thing. “Everything,” she exclaims! She also states that all of the owners brought the studio back to life out of a shared love for the arts. “I grew up dancing my whole life and when I had my own children, I wanted them to have a love for the arts as well.” She goes on, “What do I love the most? Watching all of these kids from the community embrace the arts and call this place their home.”

Ginossi was born and raised in South Florida, while her husband Alex is from Southern California.
