ust to let you know, there are those who dream, and those who are based in reality, those who imagine all the possibilities, and those who see the world in black and white. I am the former, and this has caused me lifelong difficulties attempting to adjust to a world of logic and reason. It may be easier to see what is actually going on in life, and deal with it, then to pretend and fantasize, that there will be a lottery win, that the good guys will always win, that everyone you meet cares for others, and that your best friend will not betray you.

Those based in reality know the ropes. They look upon others with skepticism, at least initially. They do not fall for a sob story when a hired worker asks for money before the job is done. They know the pitfalls of allowing themselves to believe in unconditional love or the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I sometimes wish I could be them, so that I would never have to be disappointed.

We are unable to think differently, and we almost always irritate others with our positive outlook on all things big and small. In other words, we exhaust others with our imagination, until they either leave us, or at least, feel sorry for us.

I will continue to allow my children to find their own paths, even if they lead nowhere, because among those who are in business, finance, and other reputable professions, there is still dance, and art and poetry, and for me, those are the block-builders of the beauty of life.

So, if your child wants to be a writer, or an artist, you can steer them to a different path, but the world would have lost what they had to offer. Sure, there is no money in dreaming, but then again, imagination can never be lost. They will get up excited to go to their jobs, they will make the world a more beautiful place. Is it possible that perhaps the dreamers win, after all?

When’s the last time you’ve eaten a meal at a restaurant and really savored it, taking your time to enjoy every single sip and bite, relaxing in your seat, and talking casually with your companions, letting time pass without a care in the world? I’m willing to bet that your answer to that question isn’t “last night.” But, doesn’t that experience sound nice?

Don’t you deserve to actually feel pleasure when you’re spending money to dine out? You do! So give yourself the gift of enjoying an exquisite late lunch or dinner at a remarkable restaurant that encourages you to sit, eat, and talk at ease — The Talk:house, a family-owned and operated restaurant.

From the very first moment that you enter The Talk:house, either inside or outside on their patio, you feel lighter and happier, as if you’ve just entered a secluded, special world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s a one-of-akind retreat where you can relax, drink, dine, and converse, and where you don’t think about anything other than how delicious the food and

drinks are and how much you are enjoying yourself. The owners of The Talk:house, Chef David Van Stolk and Steve Greenman, opened the restaurant to offer the “best food, drinks, entertainment, and art in a people-friendly atmosphere that is sure to get you talking!” Well, the two succeeded, because The Talk:house certainly had Abby, me, and our guest for this review, David, talking.

We started with the shrimp cocktail appetizer ($17). Four jumbo shrimp are grilled to perfection, then served ice cold with a tangy housemade cocktail sauce. Of the highest quality, the shrimp are firm, yet succulent, and very refreshing.

Next, we ordered our dinners, but I must mention that each of us received a house salad with them. I tell you this fact because we were all very impressed with them. Most of the time when Abby, I, or one of our guests gets a side salad, there’s really not much to say about it. But The Talk:house doesn’t just serve the usual, same ol’ salad that you’d find at a self-service buffet… instead, the restaurant pays attention to the small details, like serving this first course on chilled plates to ensure that all of the vegetables are as fresh and crisp as possible.

Additionally, they even take the time to toss the salad in just the right amount of your choice of homemade dressing so as to highlight the lettuce, grape tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers without overwhelming them.

The restaurant’s dinner menu offers pasta, steak, chicken, seafood, lamb, and more, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. Abby selected the filet mignon (market price) served with smashed potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables. If you are a steak lover, then this meal is hands down the one for you! None of us — Abby, David, or I — have ever seen a filet so large and thick as the one at The Talk:house.

Abby’s plate arrived, and we all stared at it for a few moments.

It was impressive just to look at! Then, she actually sliced into it, and expressed, “Wow, it cuts just like butter.” A premium cut of meat, the filet is served with your choice of one of two sauces: peppercorn or “Diane.” Abby selected the peppercorn sauce, which emboldened the tender, juicy meat with an irresistible flavor. “I would order this again in a heartbeat,” testifies Abby.

David chose one of the Chef ’s specials, a 14 oz. Angus New York strip steak ($46), which came with smashed potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables. The presentation was impeccable, with the steak evenly sliced and fanned across the plate. A generous gravy boat filled with the “Diane” sauce, which is full of tender, earthy mushrooms, accompanied the plate. David was a bit crabby on this particular day of the review, but his meal, and the restaurant’s environment, brightened his mood considerably. “It’s an exceptional steak,” he comments, continuing, “and that ‘Diane’ sauce really took my edge off and pacified me.”

I ordered the cashew crusted salmon ($32), paired with smashed potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables, for my dinner. The thick, sizable piece of fish is fresh and flaky, and finished with a light, lovely lobster beurre blanc that will delight your palate. The cashew crust adds a subtle salty nuttiness to the dish that the beurre blanc complements wonderfully. I also have to tell you about the smashed potatoes… incredibly thick, creamy, and flavorful, they’re more than just the bland, boring instant version. They include some of the potato’s skin for some texture, and are served with a sprig of rosemary for an extra layer of refinement.

For dessert, we shared one of the most popular items, the Key lime brûlée ($10), which arrived on a bed of sweet raspberry sauce, accompanied by fresh, bright red sliced and fanned strawberries topped with a dollop of whipped cream. Again, The Talk:house pays attention to the fine details, going so far as to also decorate the plate with a beautifully-drawn chocolate sauce palm tree that delighted each of us. The dessert itself is creamy, with a light tang that’s nicely balanced by the fresh berries. The brûléed top

adds a satisfying crunch and a unique smokiness that tempers the tart sweetness. David is not a fan of regular Key lime pie, but he really enjoyed this combination of it with the brûlée, saying, “The crust is soft and light, but with sufficient body to accentuate the flavorful pie.” If you’re looking for a one-of-akind dessert, then you should give the Key lime brûlée a try because it’s unlike anything I’ve ever tasted (in a good way).

Abby says, “I give this restaurant 5 stars, no question.”

If you won’t take our word for it, then take the word of the patrons from the fully packed restaurant, inside and outside, on the Wednesday night that we dined there. In fact, a local married couple found out why we were at The Talk:house, and made a point to inform me that “this place has the best food!”

They are regulars at the restaurant, and encourage everyone and anyone to try it because it’s a hyper-local restaurant where, like the classic TV show Cheers, “everybody knows your name.” Actually, at the same time this interaction was happening, the general manager, Ray, unwittingly confirmed the couple’s claims, coming over to greet the husband and wife by name and check if they were enjoying themselves.
