The Place to Be: Fantini’s New Haven Style Apizza

efore this review, I was convinced that the very best, most authentic Italian pizza and food could really only be found in my hometown haunts in the PA, NJ, and NY areas. Never had New Haven, Connecticut ever entered into my thoughts as a contender for the title of “Best Italian Food” or “Best Pizza.”

Then, I visited Fantini’s New Haven Style Apizza, and I was not only proven wrong, but also put in my place, as I learned some very important — and very impressive — history about the origins of pizza and Italian cuisine in the United States.

Who knew that New Haven, Connecticut has more pizzerias per capita than any other place in the world? Or that New Haven is one of the first places that pizza was sold in the U.S.A.?

I certainly didn’t. But, after eating at Fantini’s, I do… and, I have officially joined the large contingent of passionate people who advocate for everyone and anyone to try New Haven-style “apizza” and Italian

dishes, because it truly is worthy of the highest praise. So, without question, you have to try the food at Fantini’s New Haven Style Apizza.

Apizza (pronounced “AhBeetz”) is not just any ordinary pizza. If you’ve never had it, then you need to know a very important fact before you can really eat and appreciate it — it’s not burnt, it’s charred. There is a very specific science that goes into making apizza. Not just anyone can make it! Indeed, the owner and operator of Fantini’s, Jimmy Fantin, was born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut, and knows all of the secrets to make a genuine apizza. He began as a dishwasher in New Haven’s first (and, arguably, best) apizza restaurant on the famous Wooster Street (a/k/a the “Little Italy” of NH), working hard to eventually move up to the revered pizzamaker position. You can especially trust that Jimmy’s apizza is 100% authentic because he was taught how to make it by none other than the son-in-law of the acclaimed restaurant’s owner.

“I do it old school,” Jimmy attests, continuing, “I do it exactly as I did it in 1980 in New Haven… no shortcuts, no conveyor belts, no machines. The dough is tossed in the air, and it’s all made by hand.”

Jimmy has certainly succeeded in replicating that New Havenstyle and feeling, even using the same, genuine Libby glasses that you can find at one of New Haven’s most famous apizza restaurants and serving Connecticut-original Foxon Park bottled soda pops.

He also achieves a genuine Italian feel, as he serves wine from his own family’s winery based in Italy.

Fans of Dave Portnoy’s One Bite series will be excited to learn that Fantini’s is so authentic that the restaurant recently hosted the famous pizza reviewer, who has often expressed that New Haven-style pizza is his absolute favorite. Portnoy gave Fantini’s an impressive 8.1-rating, which is especially noteworthy because Portnoy used his self-described “strictest, hardest scoring scale in the country,” i.e. the one for New Haven-style pizza.

Abby, Trisha, and I got the full scoop about Fantini’s apizza, but we wanted to know more, and we wanted the full experience.

Plenty of people have raved about the apizza at Fantini’s, including Dave Portnoy, but what about the other items on the menu? We had to set out to do a taste test.

We started with three appetizers: fried calamari ($13.95), meatballs ($14.95), and broccoli rabe & sausage ($10.95).

Lightly breaded, the calamari is remarkably tender, probably due to the fact that it is wild caught. Indeed, as someone who doesn’t go out of her way to order calamari, yet has had it at countless restaurants in South Florida, I can honestly say that Fantini’s

rendition is by far the best I have had in the area. In fact, I would even order it for myself again… that’s how much I enjoyed it.

Abby, a calamari connoisseur, heartily agrees that Fantini’s has the freshest, most tender and flavorful calamari that she’s had in a long time. It’s a must-order item if you’re a seafood lover.

If you’re looking for a crowdpleasing Italian starter, then the meatball appetizer is the best choice. Two baseball-sized meatballs are smothered in chunky, flavorful marinara sauce and served with a dollop of incredibly fresh, creamy ricotta cheese. Take one bite of this full, rich appetizer and you’ll be hooked, because as Trisha admired, “You can tell that it’s homemade.”

The broccoli rabe and sausage starter will delight any genuine Italian with its authentic, robust old-world flavors. If you’ve never had broccoli rabe, then know it has a nutty, slightly bitter taste that is very herbaceous. The tender, juicy sausage, however, perfectly cuts this acerbity of the vegetable and adds a delicious, salty savoriness to the dish. It’s a bright, fresh prelude to any meal you choose!

Fantini’s lunch and dinner menus include plenty of homemade traditional Italian meals, as well as some unique, yet just as delectable, homemade Italian dishes with a New-Haven spin.

both selected Italian classics — shrimp scampi over linguine ($20.95) and veal marsala ($24.95), respectively. I chose one of the house specialties to sample a more New Haven-style meal — chicken shrimp Fantini ($28.95).

Abby was highly impressed by her generous portion of meaty shrimp, which she added were, “healthy, thick, and firm.” They’re served in a customary scampi sauce, with bright, refreshing notes of lemon tempered by rich butter and aromatic herbs.

Trisha’s veal marsala was thinly pounded to tender perfection, then served in a smooth, creamy wine sauce that she commented was, “seriously addicting.”

The different textures, tastes, and consistencies of the veal, mushrooms, and sauce work in harmony, and the result is a heavenly burst of flavor.

I cannot recommend the chicken shrimp Fantini enough… seriously, you have to order this dish. I speak with total and complete sincerity when I tell you that this entrée is one of the most outstanding meals that I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy here on the Treasure Coast. Perfectly crispy, yet still tender and juicy, breaded chicken breast is layered with thin, salty sweet prosciutto and roasted red peppers, then topped with 3 jumbo, succulent shrimp and luscious “mootz,” i.e. mozzarella.

The Place to Be: Fantini’s New Haven Style Apizza The chicken and shrimp are served with a side of pasta, and the entire dish is finished with a one-of-a-kind basil marinara sauce that, if you’re bored of traditional red sauce, is guaranteed to thrill your tastebuds. It’s almost like a marsala, with a subtle sweetness, yet a peppery finish that takes it to a whole different level. If this dish is as indicative of New Haven as I think it is, then I’ll be booking my plane ticket to Connecticut soon… it’s incredible.

We couldn’t leave Fantini’s without trying dessert, especially since the rest of our meal was so satisfying! We sampled Jimmy’s chocolate cake ($8.95), a cannoli ($6.95), a slice of NY cheesecake ($8.95), and tiramisu ($7.95). All of them are, just like everything else on the menu, homemade.

The chocolate cake is wonderfully decadent, with rich, dark chocolate fudge and cake. It’s any chocolatelover’s wildest fantasy. The cannoli maintains a satisfyingly crispy shell with luscious sweet cream in the middle. The cheesecake was, according to Trisha, “the best [she’s] ever had,” with a thick, yet smooth body that is wonderfully complemented by a sweet strawberry sauce. Finally, the tiramisu was pillowy and refreshing, with just enough coffee flavor. Abby said, “This tiramisu puts other restaurants’ versions to shame.” To summarize our feelings about Fantini’s sweets menu, I leave you with this — Trisha exclaimed at the end, “Who needs a man when you have Fantini’s desserts?!”

One diner, Vinny, made a point to come to our table when he overheard Abby and I discussing Fantini’s authenticity. Born and raised in New Haven, Vinny ate and enjoyed apizza for 60+ years before moving to Stuart. “I literally cried rolling tears,” Vinny testified, “when I first ate here, because I was so happy to find apizza like at home. Now, I get here as often as I can.” Abby and I accepted his verification, not only because of his distinctive mid-Atlantic accent and clear passion for the restaurant, but also because he consistently held and ate a slice of apizza throughout our conversation.

Then, I found out that two ladies dining at the fully-stocked bar area were from New Haven, and one was visiting Fantini’s for the first time to evaluate its authenticity. I requested that she come to our table after finishing her meal to let Abby and me know her final conclusions. She ordered a New Haven classic, which also happens to be one of the most popular apizzas at Fantini’s — the white clam pizza. Jimmy assured Abby and me that the recipe is original to New Haven, even down to the clams themselves, which he

Clearly, Jimmy wasn’t lying, because the woman came to our table and raved about Fantini’s white clam apizza, saying that eating it “was like being back in New Haven.” She expressed that the restaurant felt like home, and that she was definitely going to bring her other Connecticut friends to Fantini’s so that they too could be impressed by the genuine New Haven cuisine.

Convinced? Well, Fantini’s was already popular, but with Dave Portnoy’s recent visit, the restaurant has become even more well-known in the area. With that being said, ensure that you make a reservation or call your order in early, because otherwise, you’re going to have to wait! Just like the “Big 3” apizza restaurants in New Haven, Fantini’s has become so sought after that a line begins to form out the door!

That fact alone should convince you to try the restaurant, because it’s apparent that everyone agrees —it is the hot place to eat. Take your tastebuds on a trip to New Haven, Connecticut by dining at Fantini’s… you can’t call yourself a true Italian cuisine or pizza lover without doing so, and I promise the food and apizza will change your perceptions in the best way possible.

Love at First Bite!

Bobby and Lisa Winch, owners of The Brick Oven Pizza Company, told Abby, Elaine, and me before we ate that “everything here is made with love.” It’s one thing to say something like that, but it’s another to prove it. Well, let me tell you, Bobby and Lisa went above and beyond in substantiating that claim, and I am now convinced that The Brick Oven is one of the best restaurants in this area.

We started with the cold antipasto salad ($16.99), which the menu explained is large enough to feed 2-4 people. Well, it was not fibbing. The salad was the Leaning Tower of Antipasto, piled high with artichoke hearts, black and Kalamata olives, mozzarella, roasted red peppers, mortadella, prosciutto, and more! The vegetables were fresh, the meat was deliciously salty, and the cheese was authentic Italian cheese that you can genuinely taste.

Next, both Elaine and Abby ordered medium cauliflower crust pizzas with various toppings ($17.99). I selected the beggar’s purse ($17.99). It came with the choice of either soup or salad, so I chose the soup of the day-- mushroom asiago.

The soup recipe, like many of the other menu options, is one that was passed down directly from Bobby’s Italian grandmother, and you can most definitely tell. It was like liquified mushroom ravioli!

There was a medley of flavors-- sweet, nutty, cheesy, earthy-- and it was thick, creamy, and brimming with meaty mushrooms. I wish I could meet Bobby’s grandmother so that I could shake her hand and congratulate her on being a culinary genius.

Abby’s and Elaine’s pizzas were loaded with their toppings.

Elaine was so happy that she could have a non-bread crust, and said, “I’m on a Keto diet and was craving pizza. The cauliflower crust was beyond my expectations! I could not believe that it was really gluten-free and vegan!” Abby agreed, adding, “I wouldn’t have known it was cauliflower crust if I hadn’t ordered it myself. It was just as tasty and satisfying as regular pizza.”

The Brick Oven has great pizza, no question.

But guys, their pasta is stellar too! The beggar’s purse is four cheese and pear stuffed pasta in a port wine cream sauce with sun-dried tomatoes and shiitake mushrooms. I speak with full sincerity when I say that it was the best pasta that I have eaten since moving to Florida. The
