A Rebel with a Cause: Harmony Hope Stables It was Kristi Huddleston’s lifelong dream to have a horse ranch to help children, so she made it happen! Kristi combined her passion for music with her love of horses to found Harmony Hope Stables, a non-profit, charitable safe haven and place of healing and learning for children with autism, ADHD, PTSD, depression, and anxiety as well as those who are victims of abuse. Harmony Hope Stables is the only PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) Certified Center in Martin County and provides equine and music therapy to these children in need. Kristi is a trained equestrian with 8+ years of experience and is the Path Certified ESMHL (Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning) at the ranch. She is also a talented musician and songwriter who, along with her Board Certified Music Therapist and guitar/ukulele instructor, has created a serene environment for children to express themselves through song.

A victim of and witness to physical and sexual abuse herself when she was young, Kristi was unsure that she would ever be able to work with abused children, afraid that the experience would be too triggering for her. But, after some intensive EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, Kristi explains, “I felt that my trauma was finally in a safe place.” Giving the credit of her healing journey to horses, music, Jesus, and a great mental health therapist, she continues, “The combination of them all gave me the strength to now help others!” Thus, Harmony Hope

Stables partnered with Hibiscus Children’s Center and the center’s Chief Operating Officer & Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Caroline Vineyard and Harriet Ostertag, MA, to serve the abused, abandoned, and neglected children in our community every single week.

Kristi’s motivation to serve children with autism stemmed from her volunteer work at another local horse ranch. While there, she met “Awesome Anthony,” an autistic boy with whom she made a heartfelt connection. She saw the progress that Anthony was making with the horses, and later introduced him to music therapy. Anthony is now a participant in the Harmony Hope Stables’ program and his mother, Susan, serves as Secretary on HHS’ Board of Directors.

The impact that Harmony Hope Stables has made in the lives of both autistic and abused children has been profound. Kristi says, “The best part is witnessing the therapeutic moments every day at the ranch. Our team beams with joy every time we see the impact our horses and music are making.

It’s like magic right before our eyes when we see a child’s self esteem boost, anxiety calm, and we teach them how to regulate their anger.” The music instruction and songwriting opportunities teach them to put their pain onto paper and express their emotions in a healthy way. For children with autism and anxiety, the program helps to teach them to slow down, overcome noise sensitivities, and build confidence, focus, and leadership skills. Additionally, being around and

grooming horses can not only lift depression in all of these children, but also teach them boundaries.

A “Rebel with a Cause,” Kristi attests, “This is for sure my purpose. And everything that I went through was to get me to this place today to where I can serve other children.”

It costs $10,000/year to be able to care for just one horse, and Harmony Hope Stables has three: Rio (a retired thoroughbred owned by supporter Denise LeClair Robbins) and miniature horses Harmony and Melody. A lot of their funds have to be allocated to the care of these animals. As a result, the children who go to Harmony Hope Stables for equine and music therapy must use a single Porta Potty (which costs the non-profit $80/month) because the property does not have a bathroom. Additionally, the music therapy center

does not have air conditioning or proper flooring, so the staff and volunteers have to do what they can to ensure that the children are safe and comfortable despite the heat and space limitations. Kristi says she “would cry a whole box full of tissues” if she were able to get funding to build a bathroom and install air conditioning and flooring, because, “[These] kids deserve it. They do. They deserve the best here. And we want to give them the best, from A to Z.”

An Exceptional Academy for Differently-Abled Learners

As Kristine Erice watched her son, Dylan, and his 14 classmates high five and cheer one another on during a group activity at Exceptional Academy for Differently-Abled Learners, Inc., she “just sat there and cried [her] eyes out.

[She] really felt validation. To see these kids just making friends and cheering each other on was everything to [her].”

Kristine began fundraising to found the private, non-profit Exceptional Academy for Differently-Abled Learners, Inc. in August 2019. By January 2020, the school was open for 15 students in grades 1-6 with autism and related disabilities to come and learn not only academic subjects, but also social and life skills. Kristine‛s motivation for starting the school, which is the only one of its kind in St. Lucie County, was to provide Dylan, and other local children with autism and related disabilities, an environment where the focus is on their abilities instead of their disabilities.

Kristine explains, “Every child is different, so we really look at each individual child and what their needs are and we basically cater to those. It‛s like getting the homeschool experience, but the parents aren‛t doing the homeschooling, we are. And the kids also get that social piece because they‛re with all of these other kids.” The response to the new

By Gabby Gregory school was so considerable that Kristine had to form a waiting list. She and her husband, Matt Saxton, who is the CFO of the academy, knew that they would have to expand so that they could serve even more families.

Opportunity came knocking when Kristine made a last minute decision to enjoy lunch with her mentor. At the same time, Jeremiah Baron, a well-known and respected real estate agent, walked into the same restaurant and was introduced to Kristine through her mentor. Baron has two children who are on the spectrum, so he and Kristine chatted about her school and its mission. Soon after, Baron provided the funds to expand the Exceptional Academy for Differently-Abled Learners to become Baron Academy.

The new Baron Academy is in a larger location, so it will be able to accommodate up to 80 students beginning this school year.

Additionally, children in grades K-8 will now be able to enroll at the school. Baron Academy will have 1 teacher for every 18 students, so the individualized focus and care will remain consistent with the expansion. Most of the students also have a one-on-one ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist who accompanies them throughout the school day, but if your child does not have one, then Kristine will help you find one! Insurance pays for this service, and Kristine works with specific companies who prioritize pairing each child with a therapist who is a good fit.

Additionally, you don‛t have to stress about your finances if your child attends Baron Academy. The school is part of the Florida State Scholarship Program, and Kristine will help you through the process of applying for the right aid.

Anyone can attend Baron Academy, you don‛t have to live in St. Lucie County! If you‛re willing to drive your child to Port St. Lucie, then Baron Academy welcomes you with open arms. Kristine understands that it can be a real challenge to find the right school and environment for children with autism, especially in this area, so she wants to support

here are a lot of new-birds who have flocked to our area… not snowbirds, but people who have recently decided to make Florida their home. The reasons may have been the close quarters caused by the pandemic, especially those who lived in small apartments in cities, or family members who decided life is too short to be without their loved ones. It might have been the rising taxes and housing costs up north, or the freezing winters that don’t seem to be getting any easier to live with, but for whatever reasons, our roads are flush with out-of-towners. We Floridians are a patient bunch, yielding the right of way to those who do not know the lay of the land when their cars can’t seem to get in the correct lane, or they ask directions for the umpteenth time, but there are many store owners who have reaped the benefits, especially in light of a miserable year of struggles during Covid. Still, it might not be as easy to find a place to park, to get a doctor’s appointment, or to get immediate seating in restaurants the way it usually is during the summer months. I, for one, have noticed lots more traffic, and dread to think of what the winter will bring. But we offer southern hospitality, even though many of us are displaced northerners from way back, and 44

in that vein, we really need to give some helping advice to those who are not used to our stormy weather and hurricanes.

With the cost of lumber skyrocketing, and many homes still in need of hurricaneproofing, we should extend our knowledge to our new neighbors.

Hurricane shutters, plywood, or impact windows are a must.

If there are coconuts on palm trees, the homeowner should have them removed before any storms, as a courtesy to everyone, because they can become missiles in high winds. Outdoor furniture, potted plants and the like should be taken inside.

Food, especially non-perishable, should be stocked in a hurricane closet, along with water, enough for one week without electricity, for each member of the family. If one is using a gasoline-powered generator, it should never be used in the house or garage, nor should a grill to cook food. It is likely electricity will go off during a hurricane, and may be off for days or weeks at a time. If you are evacuating, have a plan in place. If you are not evacuating, make sure aside from food and water, you have plenty of cash on hand, a gasoline tank in your car that is filled, and lots of bug spray. Have a week or more supply of medicine and a first-aid kit. If you have a cooler, store

perishables and ice as best you can.

The time to cut down tree limbs is long before a storm, not immediately before, as they will not be picked up in time and could be thrown about. If the eye of the storm passes overhead, this is not the time to go out and assess the situation. The storm will return sooner than you think. Pet care and concern is a must, and remember, they rely upon you to keep them safe.

We old-timers know all the above, and probably lots that I have forgotten about, but new-comers will not have the experience that you have. Help them out, pass on information, and best of all, invite them into your home, if their home is not as safe as yours.

For What It’s Worth, we all have to work together, share what we have, do the best we can, and always remember that one day you might be in need of someone else’s help. It’s common courtesy, and good karma.
