The objective of this exercise is to design a series of spaces within a 12 x 12 meter space composed by four parallel lines. The 4 parallel walls are load bearing and cannot have openings more than 2 meters wide. Their height is not fixed but should be 6 meters high at most.

Translation Repetition

The spaces may exceed the boundaries of the walls but should remain within an assumed “site� that is 13.5 x 13.5 meters.

Mutation

The space must be subdivided into 7 spaces and with no additional circulaton, meeting the following criteria: 3 spaces - 4-6 sq.m.

2 spaces -11-15 sq.m.

2 spaces - 21-26 sq.m.

Exploded isometric The main ideia in this firts exercise was to create and connect the seven spaces maintaining the most intact as possoble the four bearing walls. Each room was designed to provide a different experience of height and linght through different openings, thickness of the wall and ceiling height.

The objective of this exercise is to design a spatial unit and repeat it three times to fit within a rectangular volume 10 meters tall, 6 meters wide, and 6 meters long OR 10 meters tall, 6 meters wide, and 10 meters long.

Translation Repetition

Nothing can exceed the boundaries of the given volume.

The volume must contain three levels linked by stairs or ramps.

Mutation

Practical human occupation should be considered. The volumes should be based on platonic forms or relatively simple deformations of platonic forms.

The spacial unit chosen to develop this exercise was the L-shape. I combined the three units in different positions and heights, connetcing them through two flights of stairs, one that is heavy and connects smoothly with the ground floor; and the other that is light and uses the ceiling of one of the units as a step or platform.

The objective of this excercise is to rescale the spatial unit from the previous exercise to address three different scales: the scale of an object, the scale of a room, a scale larger than the room but not the full volume of a cube of space, 10 x 10 x 10 meters.

Translation Repetition

Develop a proposal for how to move between these spaces using ramps or stairs.

Mutation

Build a final sectional model (1:20), introducing issues of materiality, thickness, assembly, and gravity that digital software like Rhino is able to avoid.

Mutatio n 9

For this third exercise, my chalenge was to mutate the L-shape. I opted for combining three different L-shapes to create one big unit with three floors connected by a stair. In the scale of the object I have the stair, where it is possible to see the L-shape in the front view, formed by the different functions, being a stair on the left and a bleacher on the right side. The scale of the room is represented by each floor, including the space formed by the sky-light on the 1st floor; and the third scale is the bigger volume itself. The L-shape is an interesting spacial form that offers at least two directions of paths. This is what happens in this project, where in each floor, one have the choice of experiencing the shape of the room in more than one direction, including to the top.
