SOMERSET HILLS YMCA 2011 ANNUAL REPORT

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOR HEALTHY LIVING FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

WE BELIEVE...

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD Dear Members, Anniversaries and birthdays are a time to reflect upon where we’ve been, to celebrate our accomplishments and recommit ourselves to the future. 2011 marked the 60th Anniversary of the Somerset Hills YMCA - a significant milestone! The successful achievements over the past 60 years can be attributed in large part to the commitment, faith and dedication of exceptional individuals who truly believed in the important role of a Y in the community. Even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, our founders and leaders forged ahead to ensure that vital programs and services were available to a rapidly growing and changing Somerset Hills community. As a cause-driven community service organization, our Y has always had a strong organizational instinct about the importance of collaboration. By leveraging the power of strategic partnerships with other Ys, government agencies, organizations and businesses, we have been able to build greater capacity for nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. Within this year’s annual report, we’ll share some of the accomplishments of this past year that illustrate the power of collaboration and its importance in strengthening the foundation of our community. Among them: Melissa Riggio Residence: Through the persistence and perseverance of 87 volunteers, a home for six individuals with developmental disabilities was built on the Y’s Mt. Airy Road campus. The residence is named for Melissa Riggio, a young woman who was born with Down syndrome and a former employee of the Y who passed away after a courageous battle with leukemia. Her dream was to own her own home in Basking Ridge. This project was awarded the 2011 NJ Governor’s Jefferson Award for volunteer community service and acts of charity. Over $1 million of public and private funding, as well as $250,000 of in-kind gifts and services were received and the project truly exemplifies the spirit of a caring community. Strengthen Tomorrow Endowment Campaign: Ensuring that the Y will be a powerful and influential cause for years to come requires financial strength and diversification. Towards that end, the Board of Directors launched a $5 million endowment campaign to ensure that all deserving children, families and adults are provided access to Y programs and services regardless of their ability to pay. In addition, a healthy endowment will enable the Y to respond to new and emerging human service needs. To date over $3.1 million in gifts and pledges have been secured. Youth Development: We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our commitment to our community’s youth continues to be a major priority and is present in all our programs: for example, our child care programs provide a safe, nurturing environment for children to learn, grow and develop social skills; our swim, sports and play programs create positive, fun activities that build athletic, social and interpersonal skills; our education and leadership programs promote knowledge, character development, guidance and encouragement that help our youth develop and realize their potential; our summer camp programs, where our young people explore the outdoors, build self-esteem and make lasting friendships and memories. In closing, we would like to express our gratitude for the support and confidence that our members, donors, volunteers and the community has bestowed on the Somerset Hills YMCA. When you give to the Y, you strengthen our community. Though the world may be unpredictable - the Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities.

Sincerely,

Tad Waldbauer Chairman of the Board

Mission Statement The Somerset Hills YMCA is a charitable community service organization, rooted in Christian values and dedicated to helping all people grow in spirit, mind and body. We are guided by our core principles of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

“I knew this was for me!”

~ Deepa, high school freshman, volunteer, and member of the Teen Leader Club. At a recent teen volunteer fair, Deepa Mukundan, a straight-A student at Ridge High School, was one of the few freshmen in attendance. Not yet needing service hours as part of her academic requirements, Deepa saw primarily sophomores at the fair, all looking for an opportunity to fulfill their ten service hours doing something that was appealing. Deepa, on the other hand, was hoping to get a head start on volunteering so that she would truly know her passion in the following years when it would become a requirement for her, too. As a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a member of the volleyball team and a participant in Indian Classical Dance classes, Deepa was still determined to find the time to help others… but who? At the fair, Deepa met Abbey, Director of Youth Development at the Somerset Hills YMCA, and immediately had the feeling that it was at the Y that she might find the perfect solution. Deepa learned that she could join the Teen Leader Club at the Y, a club for high school students, where they would brainstorm and execute volunteer opportunities in the community. “What I immediately liked about the prospect of volunteering at the Y is that there were many options from which to choose. It was there that I learned about the Homework/Tutoring Club that’s held twice a week for younger students who need academic support and homework help. I knew this was for me!” Deepa has already accrued almost 40 hours of volunteer time at the homework club and, at the same time, is enjoying the knowledge that she is helping others. “For instance,” says Deepa, “there’s one 4th grade kid who can’t read yet and I feel like I am really lending him the support he needs to overcome this challenge. It’s not just about teaching something to someone, it’s also about helping them improve their self esteem so that they feel good about themselves.” The Homework/Tutoring Club, as well as many of the new and engaging teen programs, is funded by the Strong Kids Campaign that provides program support to all individuals in the community.

Students in the Bernards Township special education program has increased 113.3% since 2006, or from 336 to 710 students.

“When I think of the Somerset Hills YMCA, I always think of open arms reaching out to welcome and support me and my family.” ~ Patti Kaufman-Bennett, widow, mother of two boys and participant in the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program.

Patti lost her husband seven years ago when he passed away nine short weeks after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. The suddenness of his untimely passing left Patti and her boys in despair; apart from dealing with their grief, her husband’s new business and a lack of life insurance had left them with serious financial difficulties. Patti herself is no stranger to illness; she was diagnosed at age four with numerous inflammatory and autoimmune diseases and, over the years, has undergone eight major surgeries. Surrounded for years by sickness and poor health, Patti knew she wanted to find somewhere where there was life, hope and health. Her anguish led a friend to suggest joining the Somerset Hills YMCA and it was there that Patti turned, immediately finding a support system and a warm welcome. The Y’s Strong Kids Financial Assistance Program ensured that Patti and her sons were able to enjoy a subsidized membership, and that was the beginning of this family’s relationship with the Y – a place that was free of sickness and sadness. “The Y has always treated me with such respect,” says Patti. “No one treats me any differently than the person on the treadmill next to me who might be a major donor of the Y! I love that about this place: it’s real, genuine and caring.” Patti and her doctors believe that the Y has had a significant positive impact on her health, helping her manage her pain and stay strong both physically and mentally. Patti’s son, Matt, comes to the Y a few times a week. He describes the Y as a home away from home, a social place where he can make good choices. “It keeps me on a good path,” says Matt. “I work out and feel good about myself and that makes me make sensible good choices physically and mentally. Why would I spend so much time working out and then make bad choices? That doesn’t make sense at all.” Matt has enjoyed volunteering to support individuals with special needs at Bethel Ridge and has recently started helping out with S.N.A.P. (Special Needs Adult Program) at the Y. “We can’t give back monetarily, so we give whatever we can through volunteer work,” adds Patti.

Over 200 township residents attended the many diverse workshops.

“When a child like Aidan participates, the mutual enjoyment and learning are maximized for all. It’s a win-win all around.” Aidan Cairns, born with cerebral palsy and participant in summer camp at the Y. Aidan may only be five years old but, for all his youth, he is full of determination and spirit. Born with cerebral palsy, Aidan has already lived a life of challenges. For the past two years, he has attended a summer camp at the Y, swimming, playing soccer and enjoying arts and crafts. His Mom, Stephanie, spent a good deal of time researching summer camps for Aidan and was thrilled to discover a camp at the Y that could accommodate his needs. With the support of a ‘shadow’ or aide, Aidan has been able to enjoy an inclusive experience just like any other kid. “Aidan’s face lights up when we talk about camp. He just loves being there in the thick of it all among the other kids. As a parent, it’s so gratifying to see him participate in the day to day activities alongside his peers who are typically developing. He comes home feeling good about himself,” said Stephanie. Thanks to the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign and an award of $10,000 from the National Inclusion Project, the Somerset Hills YMCA has implemented ‘Let’s ALL Play – Inclusion in Recreational Programs,’ that opens doors for children with disabilities to experience everything life has to offer. Evidence shows that children with disabilities have improved self esteem, social skills, confidence, and sport and motor skills. Over the course of the past two years, a special bond has formed between Aidan and a teenager, Justin, who volunteers at the Y during his summer vacation. “They’re inseparable at camp,” said Stephanie. “They learn from each other – Justin serves as a mentor to Aidan and Aidan as an inspiration to Justin. He even talked of Aidan at his bar mitzvah – they have such a great effect on each other.” Kim de Zutter, Senior Director of Family Services at the Y adds, “We are thrilled to offer this inclusive camp, not just because of the overwhelming demand for a program like this in the community, but also because all of the kids in camp benefit. When a child like Aidan participates, the mutual enjoyment and learning are maximized for all. It’s a win-win all around.”

Teen Leaders Club has 45 members and five new Teen Leaders.

Interesting‌ more than half of our youth volunteers chose to volunteer in programs for individuals with special needs.

WE BELIEVE

in encouraging social responsibility. Almost

1,000

volunteers lent their time and talent to the Y this year.

Verizon employees assembled 24 bikes and donated them to children of our needy families at the Y.

24

kids got the gift of a bike for the holidays.

The Y now boasts 6 dance teams!

WE BELIEVE

everyone should have the opportunity to be a part of the Y. Popularity in the dance department resulted in adding two more dance teams.

800 Donors, thousands of children, teens, seniors and adults benefit from Y programs and services who would otherwise not be able to afford it.
