COOPERATION CONNECTION COMMUNITY SOMERSET HILLS YMCA 2012 ANNUAL REPORT

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD Dear Members, A community without a Y seems inconceivable. In each community, the Y is a cornerstone that supports personal and social change by investing in children, in health and in neighbors. At the Somerset Hills YMCA, our promise is to strengthen the foundation of community. This journey is sustained by the commitment, faith and dedication of individuals who truly believe in the important role of the Y in the community. The events of this past year demonstrated the strength of community and the power of connections. Every day at the Y, we focus on changing lives in meaningful and fulfilling ways. Through collaboration, we believe there are endless opportunities to connect and enrich lives while addressing critical societal needs. Our focus coupled with our strategic roadmap will deliver on this mission by optimizing and expanding the programs and services that we offer. In 2012, we have seen positive and tangible results of the difference we are making in the areas of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Through the Y’s Giving Garden we touched many lives. Completed in July, the garden was designed in such a way as to facilitate the participation of individuals of all ages and abilities. The benefits were numerous. During the summer, 900 children learned about health and nutrition by tending to the garden. Seniors realized the benefits of horticultural therapy and adults with special needs learned pre-employment skills through various gardening activities. All of the harvested vegetables were distributed weekly to four of the Y’s financial assistance families who, otherwise, would not have had fresh produce. The garden exemplifies the inter-relationship of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Our commitment to support the special needs community propelled our success in securing grants that enabled us to accommodate 105 children with special needs in the Carousel Kids summer program and in day camp. Throughout the summer, the children enjoyed enriching activities with the goal of fostering learning, self-esteem and joy. This year, Career Forum celebrated its 20th consecutive year at the Y. Difficult economic times were the catalyst for the group’s inception and, over the past 20 years, the program has helped thousands of participants through periods of unemployment and job transition. In fact, 44 participants landed jobs in 2012 – a record number in the history of the program. Launched in 2010, our Endowment Campaign has yielded 50 supporters with $3.1 million in pledges and donations. The success of the campaign helps to ensure that the Y’s impact on the Somerset Hills community will be significant and enduring. None of this was accomplished alone. There is strength that results from collaboration. It is thanks to the passion, talent and commitment of donors, volunteers, partners and sponsors that we are able to support increasing community needs. In fact, this year, the Y was able to provide over $578,000 in direct financial assistance to qualifying individuals and families, as well as over $300,000 in support programs and services that benefit the community. We firmly believe it is our responsibility to be good stewards of the resources that are entrusted to us and to work tirelessly for the good of our common future. Our community is our inspiration. Sincerely, Tad Waldbauer Chairman of the Board

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT A pilot program offered free memberships to seventh graders in Bernards Township with the goal of engaging local teens in healthy, positive behaviors. Our day care center launched Healthy U, backed by Horizon Foundation of NJ, to promote healthy living among children. That includes good nutrition and 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Through Y Splash and our new Swim School, over 100 young children learned water safety and swimming skills.

Generous donations to the Strong Kids Campaign allowed 143 children to attend summer camp who otherwise would not have had that opportunity.

Adventure Guides had record turnouts for camping trips – 671 dads/kids for fall campouts and 485 dads/kids for winter campouts.

Four scholarships administered through the Y honored local youth: The John Fanning Scholarship recipient was Marisa Rossy, the Tannenbaum Scholarship recipients were Alexandra Hershberger & Andrew Scaglione, the Millicent Fenwick Scholarship recipients were Marisa Rossy & Shayna Stemmer, and the CIT Scholarship recipients were Wesley Lui, Kelsey Ferrugia, Matthew Peer & Olivia Fogel.

OPEN

This summer, 80 children with special needs participated in Carousel Kids, a summer camp-like program run by the Y. Additionally, 25 children with special needs participated in summer camp. Teen programs are gaining popularity – in 2012, there was a 50% increase in participation for each the Teen Leaders and Tutoring programs. The Teen Scene program launched in September and had over 200 participants in 4 months.

HEALTHY LIVING Membership usage experienced an increase of 18% over the previous year. We received the MHANJ Golden Bell Leadership Award for the Healthy Outcomes Partnership (HOP) program, as a leader of innovation among NJ YMCAs in linking physical to mental health. Through this program, the Y offered Mental Health First Aid training to leadership, staff members and the community at large.

OPEN

In Wellness, new TRX classes were added with great success and popularity.

Riverwalk celebrated its 10th Anniversary with facility upgrades that better serve members.

In partnership with the Rotary Club of Bernardsville and Deloitte, the Y developed a Giving Garden that allows individuals of all ages and abilities to participate and serve those in our community who do not have access to fresh produce. The garden’s impact:

•900 children in summer camp and child care participate by planting, watering and harvesting

•Barrier-free garden plots enable pre-employment skills training for adults with special needs and provide horticultural therapy for people with disabilities, seniors, and cancer survivors

•4 families who receive financial assistance from the Y happily accepted weekly harvested produce during September and October

The basketball gymnasium was equipped with air conditioning to keep our members happy and comfortable.

Introduced in the fall, the Achievers Day Program for adults with special needs teaches job preparedness including communications and personal interaction skills, as well as tips on how to secure employment.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

There was a 30% increase over the previous year in the number of kids needing financial assistance to attend summer camp.

In June, the First Annual Spirit Awards event to honor volunteers was attended by 200 guests. Of the 50 volunteer nominations, nine awards were presented to over 20 volunteers for their service to the Y.

Local Girl Scouts, interested in raising awareness about Autism, planted bulbs in front of the Y so that tulips in many colors will bloom in the shape of the Autism ribbon during Autism Awareness month in April.

During Hurricane Sandy, the Y served over 550 community members by providing a warm place to reenergize their spirits, laptops and cell phones.

In 2012, nearly 1,000 volunteers lent their time and talents to the Y. Through grants, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA was expanded to support an increased demand of community members in need of cancer support.

In its 20th consecutive year, Career Forum continues to be a successful program with 44 participants landing jobs in 2012 – a record number in the history of the program. OPEN

The Strong Kids Campaign was supported by over 900 individual donors, by the Golf Classic that raised a record $100,000, and by additional events such as the Manhattan Island Swim which brought together four Y-devoted swimmers from 14 to 80 years old. Rod Ryan received the 2012 Robert E. O’Haus Award for outstanding leadership as a member of the Board of Directors.

We received $51,500 in grants to support programs that foster youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, as well as grants of $58,955 for capital projects that enabled us to better serve those with special needs. The 25th Annual Volunteer Recognition Night was held on November 15th and honored Bill & Carolyn Knox with the Millicent Fenwick Civic Award, the Alexy Family with the Family Volunteer Award, Martin Scheidl with the Adult Volunteer Award, and Nicole Robertson with the Youth Volunteer Award.

Adventure Guides holiday food drive collected seven tons of food for the Food Bank Network of Somerset County – two tons more than the previous year! We continue to provide affordable classes in CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention and Lifeguard Training. In 2012, the Y fully trained all of its 525-member staff, plus 266 community members in these life-safety courses.

Overall, we provided $878,000 in subsidies so that everyone could learn, grow and thrive at the Y. $578,000 was provided directly to deserving individuals and families, and $300,000 supported free Y programs and services for the community.
