I

always hear this debate circle Hollywood: Whether celebrities are, and should therefore act, like role models? And every time I hear this, I think to myself, why is this even a question? Why do we hold celebrities to some role model standard to begin with? They are merely business people engaging in the business of entertainment — their jobs are to be good at their jobs, be it singing, acting, dancing, or all of the above. Take a look back at Old Hollywood. Those stars and icons may well have been celebrated and cherished performers, but they were not held up as role models for children. Children were supposed to look up to police officers, firemen, and doctors. Then, somewhere along the way, celebrities were suddenly expected to be role models for young children. I get that the world today runs on a 24 hour news cycle, that entertainment is King, to a certain extent and that celebrity has an entirely different meaning now due to the high levels of access to them that was unavailable in “old Hollywood.” But, why would that change their job description? Why would that convert them to

role models? Personally, I think it’s time we stop forcing celebrities to be good at being role models because they’re not meant to be role models. Let our children, our peers and our elders seek out role models that take on some sort of role in the world whose features we would, in fact, want to model our lives after. There are plenty of people in the world that are more apt to carry the title of role model — scientists, doctors, inventors, soldiers, etc. Hell, even mothers, friends, that girl down the street that always helps Mrs. What’s her face carry her groceries home. We should learn to seek out good from the world and emulate that good ourselves, instead of forcefully assigning them onto people simply because they command a certain amount of limelight. We’ve all heard the famous phrase, “be the change you wish to see in the world.” Well, that change, that goodness, that is the stuff of a role model, regardless of its source. Seek it out everywhere in the world. More importantly, seek it out in yourself. —Maria

Readers Respond to our April Issue: “In last month’s article ‘Is Paying Taxes with your credit card a smart choice?’ I just have to say this is just a really stupid idea for anyone to think, let alone partake in. Credit cards, most times, get us in trouble — regardless of how low your APR may be. . . . This is just a mistake and can lead you down a path of debt. . . . I say NO, not smart — more like very stupid. —Tom, 29, Olde City I just moved to Philadelphia and your ‘Ph-un in Philly’ section, as well as the ‘Dress to Impress’ piece are truly helping me get acquainted with the city — what to do and where to shop. Firstly, I think that politics in our country are completely corrupt and we are led by people who not only don’t have the greater good in mind, they don’t even care to consider it. ave you ever considered becoming a Mason? Often referred to as a “secret society” Freemasonry is the oldest, largest Fraternity in the world. It’s members have included Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Statesmen, Generals, Admirals, Supreme Court Chief Justices, corporate CEOs, opera stars, movie stars, and probably, your next door neighbor; and Masonry is always ready to welcome good men into the Fraternity. Despite being a highly diverse organization, a Mason’s central preoccupation remains charitable work within the complete community, partaking in moral uprightness (in most cases requiring a belief in a supreme being), as well as, the development and maintenance of fraternal friendship amongst the brotherhood. Becoming a Mason requires learning the principle of honor and that a man has a responsibility to act with honor in everything he does. If you are willing to allow others the same rights to their own beliefs that you insist on yourself, this is the way of a Mason, one who insists on toleration — on the right of each person to think for himself in religious, social and political matters. “Masonry teaches that each man has a duty not only to himself but to others. We must do what we can to make the world a better place. Whether that means cleaning up the environment, working on civic projects, or helping children to walk or read or see — the world should be a better place because we have passed through it” (gl-mi.org). Masons understand the importance of self-development and the weight it carries in comparison to money in the bank, social position, or political power. Those things often accompany self-development, but they are no substitute for it. Masons work at building their lives and character, just as a carpenter works at building a house. Masons strive to be good citizens that have a moral duty to be true to the country in which theyMay live.2012 4 Insight•

Election

uper PACs emerged after the U.S. Supreme Court permitted unlimited corporate and union spending on elections in January 2010 (Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission). Although not directly addressed in that case, related, subsequent litigation (Speech Now v. Federal Election Commission) and Federal Election Commission (FEC) activity gave rise to a new form of political committee. These entities, known as super PACs or independent-expenditure-only committees (IEOCs) have been permitted to accept unlimited contributions and make unlimited expenditures aimed at electing or defeating federal candidates. Super PACs may not contribute funds directly to federal candidates or parties. Much about super PACs’ activities remains unknown. Congress has not amended the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) to formally recognize the role of super PACs. No legislation introduced in the 112th Congress specifically addresses super PACs. The FEC has issued advisory opinions, but has not yet approved regulations on the subject. Despite limited policy action on super PACs, these new entities are quickly occupying a major place in federal elections. In just 10 months of operation in 2010, almost 80 super PACs emerged, spending a total of approximately $90 million — more than $60 million of which went to elect or defeat federal candidates. Super PAC financial activities appear likely to be even more ambitious this year; with approximately 250+ Super PACs already registered with the FEC, some of which are reportedly staffed by operatives with close ties to 2012 presidential campaigns.

Introverted, Not Shy: Children with a Gift

I

f you find yourself concerned with why your child is not actively socializing amongst his/her peers or surrounding individuals, your assumptions of your child’s shyness could be a total misunderstanding. As mentioned in Time magazine, “But this [shyness assumption] misses what’s really going on with standoffish kids. Many were born with a careful, sensitive temperament that predisposes them to look before they leap. And this can pay off handsomely as they grow, in the form of strong academics, enhanced creativity and even a unique brand of leadership and empathy.” Shyness, not to be confused with introversion are quite different. “Shy people fear negative judgment, while introverts simply prefer less stimulation; shyness is inherently painful, and introversion is not. But in a society that prizes the bold and the outspoken, both are perceived as disadvantages.” It appears many children are born with a knack in protecting themselves, as introverts; these children are equipped with the ability to take thing slowly, pace their speech, and maintain healthy silences. It is important that parents don’t try to turn their introverted child into an extrovert, as stated in “The Hidden Gifts of the Introverted Child,” by Marti Olsen Laney “They are hard-wired, their brain and nervous system, so that they have a certain temperament and it affects a lot more areas than just socializing,” she said. That includes “sleeping, eating, how they do homework, how they learn, how they behave in school.”

Fate vs. Free Will:

I

Which Dictates Your

Life?

n his song, “What Goes Around … Comes Around”, Justin Timberlake did more than place his melodic voice over a catchy beat. In the song, he expressed to his old girlfriend that the wrongs she committed towards him would eventually come back around to her. So, let’s just say the girlfriend ended up getting cheated on by her next boyfriend; did this happen because of fate or simply free will? The answer: free will, according to the principles of Karma. According to the 2003 publication of World Religions, Karma is an ancient belief in the natural cycle of cause and effect. Originating in India during the first millennium BC, the concept of karma is prevalent in most of the world’s religions and is used to explain the good or bad events of our lives, with the general disbelief of free will or random happenings; everything that happens to you is directly or indirectly related to your prior actions. The concept is so popular that companies such as Wrap, Giftly, and Karma are sprouting up to ensure people put out good karma by providing ways to send gifts to friends and giving them the choice of donating its value to charity. So, the next time you are at a restaurant, think about paying for the table across the room; it may just come back to you! May 2012•Insight 5

Picking your Saturday Night Destination

I

t’s Saturday night and the moon is right, gonna have some fun, show ya how it’s done … ok so we’re a night off but hey, it’s the weekend and we are ready to party! But first … where to go? Philadelphia offering party-goers a poppin’ party scene with two current hot spots,Rumor (1500 Sansom St.) and Whisper (1712 Walnut St). Why pick them, you ask? We’re about to tell you.

Rumor

With lines snaking the corner of 15th and Sansom streets, Rumor night spot has been coined the top dance club in Philadelphia. With a fresh feel, music variety, and just an overall ‘new’ atmosphere, there’s no wonder why people are crowding into this hot spot. Rumor is designed and styled similarly to underground NYC house clubs with led, neon and strobe lights pulsating to deep bass beats. House, electro, and dubstep music can be heard in one room surrounded by go-go dancers and blinding strobe lights, while throwback hip hop/rap can be heard in another room. Rumor provides club goer’s with a cool variety of both space and music. There are several different rooms to be in, each with their own flair as mentioned above. If you can’t decide on one, just mingle around! Rumor is a great spot to dance and get wild, the service is quick so your tables are always catered to and the bottles are always popping (cha-ching!). The Downside: The bathrooms; only 3 single bathrooms for the club. Wait in line for 20 minutes every time you need to use them = BUZZ KILL. Pros: The top club in Philly bringing in big name, international DJ’s. The lighting and high quality sound Hardman’s JBL loudspeaker systems add to the atmosphere, making your night more intense and more exciting. The staff (both door and bar) is friendly and helpful. Upcoming: May 3 — Mad Decent; May 10 — Insomniac; May 17 — Space. Visit www.rumorphilly.com.

Whisper

“Arrive by elevator and enter a unique world of cutting edge sights and sounds.” Whisper has been known to be the tad ‘more approachable’ club in Philadelphia, more people are welcome than not (though dependant on the time this may require cover). Whisper has replaced the former club Denim, offering club goer’s a nice sized dance floor with the perfect amount of light, plenty of VIP areas with some overlooking the DJ, other over the dance floor. Clean bathrooms. Plenty of modern lights/lasers/strobes (the strobes here are not overbearing, used tastefully, which is appreciated as some clubs overdo it). Some really cool DJs come out to perform here. Whisper “goer’s” love the back bar area (by the restrooms), it is a bit more cut-off from the strobe lights and loud music, enabling you to hang out and actually talk with friends. It’s also a huge plus to hang out by the bar- no shoving your way through a crowd to get yourself noticed by the bartender, and the ability to lean up against the bar and chill, not something you can do in most clubs with a crowd of people waiting for you to get out of the way. The Downside: Waiting in line outside due to pretentious bouncers and charging ladies $20!!! Pros: Party past closing, Whisper is open for after hours clubbing. Upcoming: Visit www.whisperclub.com for more details.

by nature, architecture, high fashion, art, and even music; Ilocalnspired Dmitry Aybinder, founder and president of Decorative Style Inc. is a mastermind when it comes to your home’s interior décor, spe-

cializing, but not limited to window treatments and creative light fixtures. His adventure began in Kiev, Ukraine, where Aybinder studied building and construction at the ‘Building and Construction College of Kiev.’ Upon his move to the states, Aybinder opened up his business, Decorative Style Inc. (decorativestyleinc.com), which has now been open for over 21 years! 21 years in business has brought Aybinder a long way, including projects in some of the hottest clubs, restaurants, spas, and resorts; from Miami’s Fountainbleau Hotel, The intercontinental Miami Hotel, STK Miami, The Breakers Hotel, Palm Beach, to Atlantic City’s The New Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino, to Las Vegas “City Walk”, and in Los Angeles: The Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel, LA LIVE The Ritz Carlton Hotel, STK LA. Today, Aybinder can offer to clients different interior concepts that set him apart from any other interior decorator or designer. What are they might you ask? “Decorative Style, Inc. is continually creating exciting designs and developing new uses for our strings. The most recent and by far the most challenging, is the creation of our String Chandeliers,” Aybinder shared. “The concept is unique. We can transform an existing, may-

Insight: What is all this talk about strings? DA: It’s pretty simple. They are so different, so beautiful, when people see them, they HAVE to have them. Then their friends and family and neighbors see them and want them. Then it’s a snowball effect. The best endorsement for us is that they have been chosen by some of the most prestigious designers and hospitality design firms in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Europe. Our strings got huge exposure when they were used for the 2010 Metropolitan Opera Opening Gala, and the wildly successful Missoni For Target Store opening in Manhattan. Insight: What is your goal with Decorative Style Inc.? DA: My goal has always been to show clients a way to decorate a window artistically, rather than just cover it. I want them to consider their windows as important as their room furnishings, decorative accessories, even their clothing. I guess you could say that my goal is to have them dress their windows. I’m always shocked when people spend 10’s of thousands of dollars on gorgeous furniture and art, and then leave the windows untouched and bare, sometimes for years. “The obvious benefits of having quality window treatments are both economical and ecological. They keep your home warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer. They protect your furniture and flooring from fading, and of course control the amount of light in the room and add privacy.”

Home Energy Saving Ideas by

Hutchinson Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling

W

ith the summer right around the corner, we anticipate hot days, lots of ice cream trucks, and high energy bills! Fred Hutchinson, President of Hutchinson Plumbing Heating Cooling has provided us with some Home Energy Saving Ideas, which can help you save a buck this season and beyond! Your Cooling System: 1. Make sure your central air conditioning unit is correctly sized to your home and is the highest efficiency available. High Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratios (SEERs) should be 13.0 SEER and above. 2. You can install a whole-house ventilating fan in your attic to circulate air in your home on milder days when air conditioning isn’t required. Sealing Your Homes Air Leaks: 1. It’s recommended you have a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Health, Safety and Energy Audit performed by a certified contractor to identify where valuable energy’s escaping your home; such as air seeping around your attic door or attic access, around wires, pipes, etc. wasting fuel heating or cooling your attic.

2. To save up to 5% of your heat-

ing/cooling cost, test your windows and doors for air tightness. Add weather stripping and caulk where necessary. Kitchen: 1. Use cold not hot water when operating your garbage disposal. 2. When cooking small meals use a small electric cooking appliance or ovens rather than the kitchen range or oven as they use less energy. Indoor Lighting: 1. Use compact fluorescent bulbs. They produce three to four times as much light per watt as incandescent bulbs. 2. Halogen bulbs are another energy-efficient choice for indoor and outdoor lighting and use about 25 percent less energy than traditional incandescent ones May 2012•Insight 7

he Reiders Family Science Lab is an international forensic and clinical reference laboratory that is unsurpassed in its scope of toxicology tests, accuracy of results, scientific expertise, and innovation. The state-of-the-art headquarters includes clinical, forensic, and research facilities; a dedicated and secure crime laboratory, staffed by more than 200 highly trained professionals. National Medical Services Lab is passionate about promoting public health and safety. “Following a successful career as Chief Toxicologist for the City of Philadelphia, Dr. Fredric Rieders founded National Medical Services Labs (later NMS Labs) in Willow Grove, PA in 1970. Once the company was successfully established as a leading international forensic and clinical toxicology laboratory, he fulfilled another lifelong goal by creating a non-profit, charitable organization to conduct forensic science research and provide education and training to high school and college aged students beginning their scientific careers. That organization is the Fredric Rieders Family Renaissance Foundation, located in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, now housed in the building that had been the original home of NMS Labs. Today it boasts classrooms, laboratories and state of the art analytical instrumentation to continue providing mentorship and fostering a love of learning and scientific discovery in these young scientists” (frfoundation.org).

Early on in his career, Rieders worked as the City of Philadelphia’s Chief Toxicologist, Dr. Rieders researched “such mysterious topics as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Legionnaire’s Disease and heavy metal poisoning. During this time, he was also Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Thomas Jefferson University where he taught Medical and Graduate students” (frfoundation.org). Fredric Rieders, Ph.D. died at his home on Nov. 26, at the age of 83. A renowned toxicologist, he was Philadelphia’s first Chief Toxicologist, a Professor of Pharmacology at Thomas Jefferson University, and the founder of National Medical Services, one of the nation’s largest and most respected forensic and clinical toxicology laboratories. Through the years, Dr. Rieders conducted sophisticated laboratory tests and provided expert testimony in a variety of high profile cases including the case of the serial killer of helpless hospital patients; Dr. Michael Swango, for which Dr. Rieders received a Bronze Eagle from the Department of Veterans Affairs; the Libby Zion case that led to legislation affecting hospital care; the rat poison murder of Robert Curly by his wife and the O.J. Simpson trial. The Fredric Rieders Family Renaissance Foundation offers programs to educate and train current and future professional forensic scientists. The Foundation uses its forensic science programs and resources as a means to motivate and educate young people and their teachers, with a special focus on providing support to members of communities that are demographically under-represented in the sciences and having challenging financial circumstances.

here are many things Philadelphia is known for, yet many of you may not be aware that Beer is one of them! Philadelphia is home to a large variety of breweries, most of which are distributed at local stores, bars, and restaurants. We are all familiar with going away on an exotic vacation and drinking their home grown brews, so lucky for us here in Philadelphia, we don’t have to travel too far to get a buzz from our local brews! Dock Street Brewing Company, whose slogan is “in the pursuit of hoppiness,” was founded in Philadelphia in 1985, claiming fame as the first microbrewery in the City of Brotherly Love and one of the first in the country. Dock Street was and continues to be a leading pioneer in the American Microbrew Revolution. The name Dock Street itself embodies the American Mystique and serves the independent thinking consumer. This is why we find ourselves right at home in West Philadelphia’s Cedar Park neighborhood in a magnificent historic firehouse on the corner of 50th & Baltimore Avenue. The neighborhood stays true to Dock Street’s bohemian philosophy with its progressive and eclectic counterculture and a mixture of race, creed and background. “We are constantly striving for innovation and pushing the boundaries of the craft brewing movement. As such, our artisanal beers have been the recipients of many major awards including the International Gold Medal for both our Amber Beer and the acclaimed Bohemian Pilsner” (Dock Street Brewing Co.). Iron Hill Brewery: “Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant takes its name from an historic Revolutionary War landmark in Delaware, where Generals Washington and Lafayette battled against General Cornwallis to ensure American liberty” (ironhillbrewery.com). It was in 1994 when Kevin Finn and Mark Edelson two award-winning home brewers, teamed up with Kevin Davies, an experienced professional in restaurant operations. And the rest is history. Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant is a privately owned company that produces distinctive, full-flavored handcrafted beers, accompanied by inspired yet informal New American cuisine in a comfortable, casual atmosphere. The staff is well schooled on beer and will join in any conversation about hops and body, etc. Iron Hill also offers new monthly brews, along with an opportunity to join ‘The Mug Club,’ a loyalty program that earns you points for your purchases. Nodding Head Brewery: Nodding Head Brewery is full of cool homemade brews on tap and is accompanied by an ultra fun restaurant. This is the ultimate destination for beer enthusiasts. The staff is full of brewmaster’s, who are friendly and very interesting. Some beers include: 60 Shilling, Grog, Saison, Spring Ale, Tasman, which are perfect to slurp down Nodding Head’s delicious mussels or baked brie, Hmmm! Philadelphia Brewing Company: The Philadelphia Brewing Company was originally known as the Weisbrod & Hess Oriental Brewing Company, which was built in 1885. Weisbrod & Hess operated on the site until 1939. Beer brewing ceased at the facil-

ity until we purchased the property in 2001. After loads of extensive renovations a beautifully restored 19th century brewing facility was created and now runs as one of the top Philadelphia Breweries. The Philadelphia Brewing Company offers beer enthusiasts tours, available Saturday’s noon to 3pm, where you’ll learn about brewing, the brewery building, and what makes the Philadelphia Brewing Co. so unique. Known for their year round & seasonal brews, some names include: Kenzinger, Pennsylvania Pale Ale, Newbold IPA, Walt Wit, and Rowhouse Red. Victory Brewing Company: Founded in 1996, these Downingtown microbrewers are responsible for All Malt Lager, Prima Pils, HopDevil IPA, Storm King Stout, and Golden Monkey Belgianstyle Tripel (all names we’re sure you’ve heard around). Started by Ron Barchet and Bill Covaleski in an old Pepperidge Farm bakery, Victory has evolved strongly over the years, outside the traditional small market of a beer-brewing restaurant. Victory Brewing is also a full service caterer and offers full party planning for many events. They offer a brewpub on wheels, which is a mobile catering kitchen. It has enough food and beer to serve up to 1000 people and has a cooler capacity of 16 kegs (2500 servings of cold beer). They are always willing to give back and work with several charitable organizations in the area, including a recent event called ‘Brews & Bowties,’ to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Yards Brewing Company: Craft brewers by trade, Tom Kehoe and Jon Bovit, are the masterbrewers behind Yards Brewing Company. It all started in college, when the duo began to experiment with homebrewing and formulating new recipes. Proud of their product, they were eager to share it with friends and it was a HIT; which soon grew into a higher demand. In 1994, they founded Yards Brewing Company and “began making beer in a small, garage-sized brewery in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia — crafting cask-conditioned ales on a tiny, homemade, three-barrel brewing system. Their lineup included such cult favorites as the Entire Porter and the Old Bart. Upon unveiling their Extra Special Ale at the Philadelphia Craft Beer Festival in April of 1995, beer drinkers in Philadelphia were flabbergasted. A star was born” (yardsbrewing.com). Yards newest brewery is the first 100% wind-powered brewery in Pennsylvania. They send all of their cardboard and glass to be recycled through Pedal Co-Op, and let local farm animals feed off their spent grains. Additionally, they’ve minimized wastewater and collect and reuse hot water whenever possible. Known for: Philadelphia Pale Ale, Extra Special Ale, India Pale Ale, Brawler, Love Stout and many more!

Healthy Living Genetic code before DNA and RNA

W

e have all heard of DNA and RNA that carry a load of genetic information, but before there was DNA and RNA what held our genetic codes 3.5 billion years ago? According to Arizona’s State researcher John Chaput, “before DNA and RNA it was threose nucleic acid, also known as TNA. Threose is composed of tetrose sugar; this could be formed from a pair of carbon fragments.”

Although it has not been reported whether or not TNA acts and binds the way DNA and RNA do for us; Chaput has reported that TNA has the ability to fold into much more complicated shapes and bind to targets with high affinity the same way that DNA and RNA first emerged when carrying our genetic codes. TNA also has the ability to bind with DNA and RNA chemically and still carry genetic information. This is important because if our genetic information was carried out by TNA before there should have been a transition point from TNA to an RNA carrier. To this day there is no accurate proof that TNA was definitely the carrier of genetic codes, researchers are still struggling to provide accurate proof.

xpecting parents are always eager to know the sex of their baby and with developments of a new blood test, it seems couples can find out the sex of their baby as early as five weeks into their pregnancy. An enzyme that is extracted from a pregnant mother’s blood carries the gender of the baby as early as five to six weeks, yet with today’s ultrasounds, the sex of the baby can only be detected at the five month mark. It is important to know the baby’s sex, in order to determine if a mother is a carrier of an X-chromosome gene that carries disease such as muscular dystrophy or hemophilia, which can be detected early on with proper & timely testing. Male fetuses have a 50% chance of catching the diseases while females are either free from it or are the carrier of it, (no 50/50 chance for the ladies). Between 2008 and 2009 researchers collected maternal plasma from over 203 women, from which they were able to accurately detect the amount of enzymes and determine the fetus’s sex from the blood plasma. More tests are still to be performed before the new & developing test is widely available to women.

Quick Health Fact! Researchers found that most women who stopped using hormonal birth control were less attracted to their guy than they were while taking the pill. 10 Insight•May 2012

TITANIC: Even 100 Years Later,

Still Much Left to Learn

L

ast month, a whole new generation got to witness James Cameron’s 1997 masterpiece Titanic in 3D. The re-release brought in bank. That just goes to show you that there is interest in the sinking of this miraculous vessel even a hundred years later. Also in commemoration of the hundred year anniversary of the sinking, scientists are attempting to bring to light new information about the ship with the use of new technologies. In this month’s issue of National Geographic, scientist William Lange releases intricate blown-up images constructed of the ship using sonar survey maps. The images have a certain clarity that has since been unseen. As the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration archaeologist, James Delgado, said of the project: “his is a game-changer. In the past, trying to understand Titanic was like trying to understand Manhattan at midnight in a rainstorm—with a flashlight. Now we have a site that can be understood and measured, with definite things to tell us. In years to come this historic map may give voice to those people who were silenced, seemingly forever, when the cold water closed over them.”

BACKGROUND CHECKS for

S

Online Daters

ure, there hasn’t been anything on the scale of the “Craigs List Killer” occur on the more prominent dating sites, but there have been some scary instances. Generally speaking, any crazy can fork over some cash and make a profile. Just last year, a Match.com client sued the company, saying she was raped on a date with a repeat sex offender she met through the site. Her attacker had at least six prior sex offense convictions! That is probably why dating sites have begun implementing background checks for its users. While they don’t really add anything to the romance of online dating, they do add safety. So far, three major sites have agreed to the checks for prospective dating clients: Match. com, eHarmony and Sparks Network. The checks will look at clients’ prior sexual assaults, identify theft and violence before allowing them to access their fee-based sites. The background checks come as part of a general safety upgrade package the sites are applying. The upgrades are even more important, give how many more dating website subscribers there are each year. Last year, 40 million Americans used online dating services. That number is due to grow even more this year.

WITH GLOBALISM COMES

HOMESICKNESS

A

recent Gallup World Poll showed that 1.1 billion people want to move temporarily to another country in search of more profitable work. Another 630 million people would like to move abroad permanently. This type of worldwide movement was traditionally known as immigration. Today, it is known as a fact of our globalized socio-economic world. In fact, it is considered the acceptable progressive outlook, to yearn to go somewhere drastically new. Technologically aids the inclination of people to take this route. Through things like Facebook, chats, skype, etc, technology gives off the impression that transcontinental or international movement is easy. Psychological studies, however, look at the unsaid emotional cost of such a move: homesickness. Homesickness among migrated adults in modern day is not an open and loud discourse. In fact, discussions of it are rare. While Skype and Facebook make it seem that you could be with all your family and friends when you’re actually not, it still doesn’t psychologically replace the real thing. For example, a 2011 study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found that Mexican immigrants in the U.S. had rates of depression and anxiety 40 percent higher than non-migrant relatives in Mexico. These same elevated rates of depression can be found across many ethnicities of newcomers to America, usually also accompanied by “accultrative stress.” This is all not to say that migration is always unbeneficial or the wrong choice. It is merely to point out that globalism is not for wussies.

While the women surveyed believe and appreciate that their men put in some effort, it really is an inefficient division of labor, if the woman has to go and re-do it, reports Good Morning America.

Say “Ah!” Spa Review

RESCUE RITTENHOUSE SPA

W

ith summer on the way, cellulite is not something that we want to show off as part of our hot “bikini bod.” In case you’re in trouble, Rescue Rittenhouse Spa is here to help! Offering a wonderful service by the name of “Velashape, Rescue Rittenhouse can smooth and insome sense, cure your cellulite. VelaShape contours shapes and slims the body by improving cellulite and reducing circumference in as few as four treatment sessions. VelaShape is cleared by the FDA and provides dramatic results without downtime or significant discomfort.” (Rescue Rittenhouse). Insight Experience: Upon arrival at the spa, the staff was super courteous and sat me in the waiting area on a ultra trendy and comfy couch. I was able to hang out, read a magazine, have some cucumber lemon water, and check out the spa’s very own blog via an iPad, which is available for guest use. My esthetician Michelle Martin Thomas, who has a strong expertise in the beauty and cosmetics industry, was very helpful in prepping me for the treatment. Being a first timer I truly did not know what to expect and to my surprise it was quite a soothing experience. Initially, Michelle put some gel on my skin to help the machine glide more easily. The VelaShape machine slid back and forth on my back thigh with Michelle’s assistance and began suctioning my skin. This felt like a pinch, whose purpose was to get the blood circulating and essentially sooth any uneven skin (cellulite). Michelle talked to me through the process, assuring I was ok, as well as, measuring the temperature of my skin to make sure the job was getting done, melting the cellulite away. “It is recommended to get Velashape once a week,” said Michelle. Afterwards my skin looked tighter and felt smoother, there was light bruising which is absolutely normal after the procedure. We would definitely go back for more!

CELEBS — the Easiest Phones

to Hack

A

t this point, I can barely think of a celebrity phone that hasn’t been hacked. Scarlett Johannson, Christina Hendricks, Heather Morris, Olivia Munn, Miley Cyrus have suffered at the hands of phone hackers — and that is just the (very) short list!. Are celebs just not as smart as us ordinary folks at protecting their phones? Well, sorry to those with a superiority complex, but that’s not the case. Celebs are more “hackable” than non-celebrities but that is by virtue of their profession. Celebs give interviews and have private lives that are constantly turned inside out for the public. Think about your passwords, what are they? Your pet names, your birthday, your anniversary, your spouse’s name, your favorite this or that. These are good secret words because you, and no one else, knows them. But, if you’re a celebrity, you’re google-able. You can find out a celebrities best friend or pet name or birthday online. Lesson learned for celebs: time to get even more creative, and arbitrary. It doesn’t even have to be that creative. Hacker, turned celebrity security expert, Gregory D. Evans of Hi-Tech Crime Solutions in Atlanta suggests that on each account, you have a different password. Moreover, with each account, add a unique number to security answer words.

BUY Your Way through TSA

T

he one joke the entire country shares in, regardless of race, gender, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation, is that of the security nightmare at airports! No water bottles, shoes off, full body scans, creepy x-ray machines. It’s the part of traveling we can all agree we could do without. Actually, you can do without it … for $100. Always on the cutting edge, the Transportation Security Administration is slowly unveiling the “Precheck” — reserving special lanes for lucky travelers that get to keep their shoes, clothes and liquids on and merely go through a metal detector, instead of a full-body scan. This system may sound familiar. That’s because this was the look of airport security before 9/11. To get to even pay the airport the $100 cost of this luxury, however, you must first qualify. There are two ways: (1) frequent flyers must meet TSA criteria and get invited by the airlines featuring the “precheck or (2) approved travelers who are in the U.S. customs and Border Protection’s “Global Entry” program can transfer into “precheck” using their Global Entry number. Either way, those that have been invited, transferred or have paid have noted that the time in line is significantly shorter and the overall feeling of travel is jarringly different, in a good way. Thus far, precheck’s expedited screening service is available at two airlines and nine airports. Here’s hoping more will pick up on the trend! May 2012•Insight 15

efore someone can be recognized as an athlete they first have to be recognized as a person. But many colleges do not look at their star players like that, they actually do the opposite. They recognize someone first as an athlete then a person. Pouring hours and hours of training for their college sport but receive nothing in return. Unlike N.F.L. college athletes do not receive compensation for their games which are estimated to have $6 billion revenue. Yes, they do receive scholarships usually from their school but third party entities are throwing out hundreds of millions of dollars on their jerseys, video games, and television rights. The NCAA takes advantage of this business making them richer from these stars, while the stars have no recourse. Most schools are fearful of retaliation; they will never defend a team player publicly. The NCAA takes away all of an athletes rights, they can destroy a players career and nothing could protect them from it. A player has no voice or vote to speak up or against the NCAA. Today there are people fighting against the NCAA to protect athletes, but so far no changes have happened.

hen you imagine a golfer you think of Tiger Woods, a scrawny, middle age, rich man, who bets on golf with his business partners, but we have it wrong! Though those are the typical stereotypes of a golfer many do not measure up to it. According to the National Golf Foundation only 10% of 26 million golfers in the United States actually belong to a private club, everyone else plays public courses that cost about $43 on weekends. Another rather big misconception about golfers is they are all business men betting on the course. Yes, business men do take their client or potential business partner to play golf, but only to build relationships and talk business with them. They get several hours of relaxation where their mind can actually focus and discuss things with their client. With this being said not every golfer is a rich man that bets on the course. Of course many business partners go out and play together but only 10% of those actually belong to a private club. The typical stereotypes of a golfer are not as true and maybe after all golf is cooler than we thought and played by more people than expected.

Career and Finance Penny Stocks are

Not worth it

i

t tends to be complicated when deciding what stocks you want to invest in. Many people want to spend less and gain more, it’s not rocket science. But most of us don’t know much about investing in Penny Stocks, yet think it is the way to go. The “it’s fairly cheap, it’s worth it” attitude might just get you into trouble. Penny stocks are shares of small companies that trade under $5.00. In some countries penny stocks are called cent stocks. Many people buy a lot of penny stocks worth anywhere under $5.00 expecting and hoping for the company to become big, but the truth is most don’t. About 90 percent of penny stocks are scams, frauds, or just should not be made public. Now the very few do go through several different investors. They start out with a small retail buyer, than a larger retail buyer invests, then small institution and so on. Most institution buyers will not even glance at a penny stock under $5. Most penny stocks are cheap for a reason, because they hold no value and will never become big and they attract people for the wrong reasons. People want to spend money on investing in something, anything, and then it becomes a waste. Almost all big investors do not want anything to do with penny stocks because most are only worth under $500 million. So hold your pennies and instead buy a lottery ticket!

any people have heard the axiom “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” This motto goes well with today’s generation and networking. Many people have a Facebook account as well as a Twitter, but how does this help you in finding a job or even creating your future? Think about it this way you may know 100 people, those100 people know 100 more people and the list goes on. Networking today has become a great way to put your self out there. Some people do not know where to start, well it’s simple. Contact those people you are close with such as family members and relatives. Let them know you are job searching and ask if they know anyone who can help you. About 75 percent of people find their jobs through networking today. Make sure you set goals for yourself as to how many people you will contact a day. Summer?

o As the warm breeze comes through the window and the last days are celebrated with picnics and pizza parties, no one can wait for the last day of school; including the parents, the students, and the teachers. For students the last bell of the school year means summer is here, time to go to the beach, hang out, and vacation. Is it the same for teachers? Do they get off just as easy as the students? For many the answer is no. During the summer most teachers are working a second job to pay off their school loans. Depending on the agreement with the school some teachers do get paid for summers while others do not. They take a week or two off of working for vacation then get right back to it. Some teachers work through the summer, participating in school programs like camp, summer school, and jobs at universities. Teachers are also responsible for creating portfolios for their Standard Boards depending on their location. They are also responsible for putting together lesson plans for the upcoming school year. So there you have it, the common misconception that teachers have summers off to rest easy. Most, do not!

Technology Today

Technology Today… Less Fun, More

Deceit

A

decade or two ago just about everything about technology was labeled as “fun.” The internet was so fun, online media was thriving (and still is), the car industry was coming up with new and improved everything, and the like... But looking at these things today it seems that everything has shifted by a different, more competitive motivation. Everything is about the money, or which company is bigger and most spoken of. The perfect example of this is Apple. When the company was originally created by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, they were just a couple of young guys messing around with technology, but today the company stands high and mighty and don’t you dare get in their way! They will move mountains just to stay on top. At one point, companies cared about their consumers and now they allow third party users to take your private information including your address books or even your personal pictures, just to make an extra buck. It seems that today people look at the internet and say “I will become the next big thing.” Of course it’s good to use the internet to expand yourself and your company, but what fun is left in that, if that’s all people want to do?

Kiss Your Unlimited Wireless Plan Goodbye!

U

nlimited data plans by phone companies were first introduced to attract customers into buying a smartphone. As the number of customers grew, the data network became more and more backed up. The only way that companies saw to fix this problem was by getting rid of the unlimited plans. Many people in today’s world enjoy having the ability to access their Twitter and Facebook accounts right at their finger tips but the problem with this is it’s slowing down the network. Some believe that if you want more then you have to pay for it. The more data a person needs should come with a price. Today one in four cellphone users have a mobile broadband subscription, it is predicted that by 2016 this number will increase fivefold. With such a high demand for data by smartphones, the mobile network is very backed up and limited in speed. If more mobile companies do not look into getting rid of the unlimited data plan a majority of people on the planet will soon be cut off from the Internet completely. Verizon was one of the first companies to drop the unlimited plan back in 2011.

A Dose of Insight We don’t live in a patriarchy anymore, right? Marriage is supposed to be equal, honest and open. EVERYONE knows that! Apparently, everyone except my husband. He entered into a business agreement and went into financial operations without even mentioning it to me. We share money completely and generally make huge decisions that could impact our entire lives together; but, he kept this a secret. I’m hurt and I’m anxious. I’ve got your Sex and the City–esque line-up of girlfriends who are all giving me different advice, ranging from “just roll with it” to “get a divorce.” Those are both extreme opposite ends of the spectrum. What do I do? ✽They say money is the root of all evil; I say it is the root of most divorces! But, that doesn’t have to be the fate of your marriage. While your husband’s failure to disclose his involvement is serious, it is not the end of the world. My advice is to write down the reasons you disagree with his actions (i.e. rationally

collect your thoughts), calmly sit down with your husband and explain why sharing major decisions is integral to a solid, healthy relationship. By doing this, you will verbally make it known your opinion on the matter without being confrontational or defensive. Good luck!

My son’s elementary school PE teacher verbally abuses him for being overweight and clumsy in front of the class. I have spoken with the teacher personally and in the presence of the school’s authorities, to no result. In meetings, the teacher downplays his abuse, branding it a form of making my son stronger and calling my reactions, overreactions. My son is growing increasingly unhappy, the school principal does not see enough cause to in any way reprimand the PE teacher and the PE teacher refuses to filter his hostility himself. I don’t want to make my son switch schools, because the school is good and he has friends there. How do I figure this out? ✽Verbally abusing an elementary school aged child? Sounds like bullying to me! Your son’s PE teacher’s actions are completely unacceptable. Motivating is one thing, harassing is another and the school district should know the difference. My advice to you is to formally write a complaint letter and give a copy to your son’s PE teacher, the principal and the 20 Insight•May 2012

school district office. I would also formally request for your son to be removed from that specific teacher’s class until the issue can be resolved. In the meantime, I would be sure your son has some physical activity at home to compensate for the possible loss of it at school. And don’t forget to explain all of this to your son in terms he can understand. Good luck!!

Every woman’s magazine and movie out there kids around about how couples that have been together forever have less sex. It was always laughable, until I realized that I’m in the same, damn rut. My wife says our sex life is normal and that she’s happy with it. Me? Well, let’s just say I can do with a higher frequency. I’m a man; I’ve got needs. But, my wife tells me it’s not needs, it’s just needy. How do I approach the issue in a way that won’t leave me apologizing? More importantly, how can I up the weekly number? ✽Simply put: switch it up! I’d bet the real reason your wife doesn’t seem too excited to have more sex is because it’s likely not as exciting as it used to be. Many times, if we, as women, can anticipate what sex is going to be like over and over again, it lowers our libido. So, my ad-

vice is to break out some champagne, candles and nice music (or anything else romantic) or change up the venue (instead of the bed, move to the bathroom or living room or simply off the bed). After all, no one wants to feel used! Good luck!

Six months ago, I took pity on my friend with financial problems and let her move in with me while she found a new job. SIX MONTHS AGO! She’s still here, however — on my couch, with no job. She keeps assuring me that she’s looking and that she’s sure to find something soon. But, neither really seems to be true. In the meantime, the living situation has gotten kinda cramped, and the pleasantries have long since worn off. I need my space back, I need my couch back and, basically, I need her to move out. How do I fix this without screwing over what, otherwise is a great friendship? Help her find a job? A place? ✽Kudos to you for helping out a friend in need; admittedly, this is a tough situation and has to be handled with care! The fact of the matter is that it’s hard to find employment in this economic environment so it’s believable that it is taking this long to secure employment. However, in consideration of your comfort level, I would definitely take a more active role in your friend’s job search: send-

ing her job announcements, offering to review resumes and cover letters, and even applying to jobs for her. Doing this will ease the tension and let your friend know you are motivated to get her out of the house (and on with her life). At the end of the day, you want to be sure you did everything possible to help her because she would do the same for you, right?! Good luck!

1.

HoroScopes Aries (March 21-April 20). You’ve become so Piscean that no one understands you. This won’t last, but beware of your hurting feet, from stumbling over everything and everyone, along with the pressure of being lost and abandoned for the last couple of months. You’re not lost or abandoned but things on an inner level pressure you into solitude. It’s a saving grace for things to come. Taurus (April 21st–May 21st). Right now nothing but your “group” matters and you will forge ahead with group plans, group dreams and goals. Know that the goals pursued are not yet able to be manifested but don’t allow that to burden you in any way or stop you in your aspirational tracks. The seeding of the seekers has begun.. Gemini (May 22nd–June 21st). Amusement may not be available. At least not the type you seek. Your needs may need to be subordinated to another’s needs. Actually you can do this if discussion is allowed with openness and truthfulness. Careful with sweets and foods you overindulge in. It’s a sensitive time for your health, specifically your digestive system and pancreas.. Cancer (June 22nd–July 22nd). No matter what your daily life is like, all you may think of is being rather adventurous, taking trips to places foreign and exotic, trekking to a wild piece of land and nesting there and doing it all without informing anyone of your plans. This may sound exciting but you’ll plop down somewhere and not know where you are. Look at travel brochures instead. Leo (July 23rd–August 23rd). Money and some of its vicissitudes may leap at you like a raging tiger. Hold steady in the face of other people’s ideas, sense of power, and sad tales of love lost. You may consider the lost loves you’ve had in the past and realize they served you in ways that led to spiritual insights. Things ease up and you’ll be back in your regular sun-filled power seat soon. Then what will you do? Virgo (August 24th–Sept. 22nd). It would be good to shift away from the self and focus on partnerships or your intimate life. This helps fulfill your life purpose, actually. And fills in any voids you may feel about your life and yourself. All tensions will have the purpose of lessons to be learned. Beware of any deception or idealization occurring. Maintain truth. 22 Insight•May 2012

2. Libra (Sept. 23rd–Oct. 23rd). Your home is here and there for a time. You seek better arrangements for more comfort. Tranquility is most important as is order and organization. As you change you must inform others of your needs and wants. This allows for harmony and cooperation, two qualities that support the core of your work and relationships. Show a little more kindness if you can. The results exceed your expectations. Scorpio (Oct. 24th–Nov. 22nd). You see objects of beauty, artwork, things you can invest in and your desire becomes great. Careful. Only use money that remains after daily needs are met. You seek pleasure, more than usual, so you can talk more, ask more questions, be sociable. You find love in your environment, more than you realized. Tell others you love them. This is not imaginary. Sagittarius (Nov. 23rd–Dec. 21st). Are you being called from home? To come home? Are you feeling like home is a place that you both want solitude in but also a place you want to flee from? Is the past upwelling and do you feel somewhat out of control? Is the money situation so difficult you want to bury your head in the warm sand and never emerge again? This will continue and you have the vision and manifesting abilities to gradually make things right again. Accept this. Capricorn (Dec. 22nd–Jan. 20th). You will assist others this month. You will feel compassion and it will flow from your lips. You will communicate with concern and care and will help those who need you with grace, tenderness, kindness and mercy. You will consider things religious. You will make decisions based on benevolence and forgiveness. All Soul qualities. Aquarius (Jan. 21st–Feb. 18th). Where did the money go? And where will more of it come from? Instead of asking these questions, go on a tithing spree. What’s that? Giving to those in need. Giving to everyone around you. Finding ways to give that no one knows about. Know that to those who give, more is given, so you can give some more. A treatise of prosperity. Pisces (Feb. 19th–March 20th). You may not have clear thinking this month, or next. Instead, your inner self has taken itself to a monastery, to places behind the scenes for refreshment. Inspirations come in the form of ideas on how to save the world. Hold off on them for awhile. Nothing’s realistic at this time. Only idealistic. Keep your feet warm, write poetry, and replace the mystical with the occult.
