H

ave you ever been a to a Cheesecake Factory? They have these Encyclopedia Britannica sized menus with every possible food option you could think of, indiscriminate of food genre. You can have Pan-Asian, Mexican, American, Italian, etc., or you can have some dishes that combine the food styles in (occasionally) interesting ways. The menu serves that guy who sits on his couch and thinks up super random and specific meals he wants – it houses all his food cravings under one roof. I get the theory behind it and it is, admittedly, a good marketing and sales strategy. But, have you ever noticed what actually happens to someone at the Cheesecake Factory when they go there. Well, maybe I shouldn’t speak for everyone. But, whenever I go there, it takes me forever to decide what I want to eat. There are simply too many options. And it’s not just the Cheesecake Factory. Life in the twenty-first century has, in general, taken on this approach. Especially if you live in a city, it seems like within five minutes of you is every type of everything that you could think of – a hundred dry cleaners, a million coffee shops, this show and that event. It’s not quite like back in the day, when the set up was more akin to “you went to either Mo’s or Sal’s Deli.” All the increasing options, intended to make life more convenient for us and let us pick what we specifically want at our heart’s desire are actually making decision making more difficult. Where they should clear our paths, they cloud our brains. It’s called the tyranny of choice – the saying basically confirming that too many choices are like a tyrannical ruler over our will, immobilizing us and confusing us. And, it’s true. The more options I have for takeout, the more I sit there unsure of what I’m actually craving. The more clothing in my closet, the more I stand in front of it clueless as to what to wear. It is only logical to think that if some choice is good, more is better. But I stand here now for the proposition that more isn’t always better. Assessments of wellbeing by various social scientists--among them, David G. Myers of Hope College and Robert E. Lane of Yale University--reveal that increased choice and increased affluence have, in fact, been accompanied by decreased well-being in the U.S. and most other affluent societies. Where more isn’t the master key to happiness, I would venture an argument that taking satisfaction in what you have – without constantly seeking that ungraspable “more” – is where happiness lives. Now, I’m not saying don’t stop trying or pushing or striving. Do it, if you feel a certain lacking in your life. But if you don’t feel that lacking, then you’re probably good and you don’t need to “keep up with the Jones’” on every front. And mostly what I’m saying is…the Cheesecake Factory menu is ridiculous! —Maria

Readers Respond to our April Issue: I never out much thought into the daycare that I sent my kids to, at least not the green aspect. However, after reading about the Alphabet Academy, I now safely say I am reconsidering as to where my husband and I are sending them to. I like reading about the way the children are engaged into their learning and how everything is so hands on. I believe that is very crucial for children to experience at a young age.— Michelle, Bucks County My girlfriends and I have been searching for a new holistic spa to try out after our usual one relocated. I am now extremely excited to tell my girlfriends that our next spa date will be at Eviama Life Spa! It seems like the staff there really cares to make you feel beautiful and relax, which is what we are all about during our girl dates. I am extremely excited! — Lennor, Philadelphia I followed through on your April Fools Day Pranks suggestions and pranked my officemate. Let’s just say I don’t think she took it so lightly. I took a screenshot of her desk top and switch all of her icons. She began to get extremely angry and frustrated when she was figuring it out. After I started laughing profusely because I could not hold it in any longer, she stormed out of the office room. Safe to say this has been the best April Fools Day ever! — Tom, Center City

ver get tired after working eight hours a day? Well, imagine working up to sixteen hours a day with only one day off. That was standard for workers around the world before a series of protests and strikes led to mandatory eight-hour work days. The day to commemorate that movement is known worldwide as International Workers’ Day, also referred to as May Day. Here, in the United States, International Workers’ Day is the commemoration of the 1896 Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where protests occurred in support of the eight-hour work day. Dozens of demonstrators were killed by police, although it was reported that no civilians opened fire. The site of the incident was designated as a National Historic Landmark and a public sculpture was dedicated at the sight of the massacre. While the United States doesn’t celebrate its labor force on May 1st (instead choosing to celebrate on Labor Day to avoid a repeat of the Haymarket Affair), more than 80 countries commemorate the day as an official holiday in reverence for labor struggles in their respective countries. The day is usually celebrated with day-long public events, including rallies, parades, and other festivities.

Memorial Day — Celebrations from History

M

emorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. While many Americans now commemorate the day with parades, BBQ’s and travel, as it marks the beginning of summer vacation season, celebrations from years ago were more solemn. The national holiday originated as a day to commemorate soldiers who died in the Civil War; by the 20th century, it was expanded to honor all Americans who died in all wars. Originally named “Decoration Day”, the day was marked with customs of decorating soldiers’ graves and holding ceremonies at the burial grounds of the fallen soldiers. This is where veterans would rehash the atrocities of the enemy fighters. While those types of ceremonies still remain today, they are not as popular as they once were. There has been a shift to a more celebratory commemoration, rather than a consolatory one. Concerts, parades, speeches, and even auto races are used to celebrate in today’s time and judging from the looks of things, it will likely remain that way.

Three Common Myths about

Full Moons A

full moon occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. However, when folks start behaving weirdly, you often hear the phrase, “oh, it must be a full moon tonight.” While there may be some validity to the connection between full moons and deviant human behavior, most experts dismiss the superstitions as myths. Read on for the top three common myths about full moons. Trauma Occurs Most with Full Moons While there is some truth to effects of the moon’s gravitational pull on the Earth, numerous studies have failed to show an increase in traumatic events during a full moon phase. A recent study by psychologists at the Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada confirmed this by comparing hospital visits over the month, although a poll of medical professionals confirmed their belief in it. Conception and Full Moons Believe it or not, many people believe that the fifth day after a full moon is the perfect time to conceive a child. However, modern science refutes that with the knowledge that women can only conceive children during ovulation. More Crimes Occur During Full Moons This widely held belief is partly true. While the moon does not have an effect on human behavior, it does provide additional lamination when there traditionally is none. As such, the increased lighting may give criminals more time to commit crimes. So, if there’s a full moon, it wouldn’t hurt to be extra cautious!

Don’t Want To Drink? There’s a Drug for That

I

f you or someone you know suffers from alcohol dependency, there is good news on the horizon. A new drug, named Selincro, recently approved by the European authorities, will be marketed to those wanting to prevent the desire to drink alcohol, a new step in the fight against alcohol abuse. Selincro, sold by Biote Therapties Corp, is a significant milestone and is set to help the more than 14 million people in Europe who are alcohol dependent. It works by stopping the “reward” path in the brain and prevents the desire to crave alcohol and other addictive substances. Selincro is administered in pill form and can be used on an “as-needed” basis whenever one feels the desire to drink. According to the company’s website, there has already been marked success with the drug during its trial studies. The company says that patients treated with the drug showed more than 40% reduction in total alcohol consumption within the first month; more than 60 percent by six months. The studies also suggested longer term efficacy of the drug beyond six months with no major safety concerns. The drug is also thought to be very well tolerated. While this drug is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States, it is safe to say this drug, or one like it, will make its way here sooner rather than later. o you want your next party to stand out from your friends party? Invite Matt Deifer from BodyPaint.Me to body paint your guests! Attending Ithaca College, Deifer majored in Television and Radio: Advertising and Public Relations. However, he also took many electives which focused on studio art. This is how Deifer was able to discover his enjoyment of art and further develop his skills. He has been hired for various events in cities all over the Northeast including New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Rochester and many more. Check out Insight Magazines interview with Matt Deifer here! Insight Magazine (IM): What originally made you start Bodypaint.Me? Matt Deifer (MD): I had always been into creating art even as a little kid. I transitioned from a studio painter into a live painter after becoming influenced by Wassily Kandinsky’s improvisations and other painters that were performing on stage at Sound Tribe Sector 9 concerts and live art themed events like NYC’s ArtBattles. The decision to create art live on stage in front of hundreds or even thousands of people was an exciting new direction for my art. At the time I was spending 40+ hours working on complex studio paintings and being very protective of letting anyone see them until they were done. Creating performance art meant I had to force myself to step out of my comfort zone and work for only an hour or two and I was done. IM: What type of paint do you use? MD: Water-based compressed powder makeup. I use a bunch of different brands. Different brands specialize in different color and effects. IM: Would you say it’s okay to use on all skin types? MD: No. Some people have extremely sensitive skin and I typically would avoid painting someone that is unsure how their body will react. IM: Aside from BodyPaint.Me, what else do you do? MD: Funtown is my marketing and talent agency. I promote and manage specialty performances for all types of concerts and special events from underground warehouse parties to large corporate events. The talent agency focuses on specialty performers that perform both stage and interactive performances. If someone needs a hoop dancer, fire performer, stilt walker, body painter or any other type of specialty act I am the person to call! 8 Insight•May 2013

IM: From the different events you were hired at, which ones stick out the most?” MD: 8/13/12 — Glow Garden — Tiberino Museum — Philly Glow Garden was a special event that I held in the garden courtyard at the Tiberino Museum. I teamed up with Psy-Fi productions to create an immersive illuminated gardenthemed dance party, complete with aerialists, glow hoopers, fire performers and tons of bodypainters. I painted and photographed one of my models in the studio before the event and used the imagery for the flyer. It was a really fun event in one of the most unique event spaces I’ve ever been to. 4/20/12 — Bass Center V — Liacorous Center — Philly Bassnectar and Larry Magid Entertainment hired me to provide promo support and specialty performers for Bass Center V, a 6,500+ person Bassnectar concert at Temple Universities Liacorous Center. We created a huge pink elephant parade with big oversized puppets that were manned by multiple people and had all types of costume characters and performers roving throughout the crowd all night. The bodypaint.me area was packed all night as we painted the performers and the crowd too. The energy of the party was incredible and our performances ended up getting mentioned in Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine. This was a huge event for Philly! Want get more information on BodyPaint.Me? Diner en Blanc

irst started 25 years ago in France, Diner en Blanc was organized by Francois Pasquier as a way to bring a group of friends together. But as word got out about the diner, the amount of people attending grew and grew. The event was such an unbelievable success that Pasquier brought the event to Montreal, and two years later to New York City. Today, the event is celebrated in 35 different cities all around the world, and this year will be the second time the even will be held in Philadelphia. However, this is not your typical dinner. Most of the excitement comes from the unrevealed location. The participants must sit in suspense, where no clue or detail of the night is ever revealed until the dinner begins. So it’s left up to the diner’s imagination to guess. Guests wishing to participate in the dinner register six weeks prior to the event, they will then receive an invitation revealing their meeting spot. If those who attended the event the prior year wish to attend again, they have priority over newcomers. On the day of the dinner you join the rest of your group at your designated meeting and a team leader walks everyone to the location. If any questions arise prior to the event, there is a website where everyone can connect with each other. Participants do need to bring with them a fold up table, chairs, what they plan to eat, and any silverware. Tip? Make sure this is something you can carry; you may be walking a short distance. There are some rules that participants need to follow such as strictly wearing white. The white attire brings a more elegant feel to the night which is one of the main goals. In addition, only those over the age of 21 are encouraged to attend. Natanya Di Bona, Co-Chair of the Diner en Blanc event in Philadelphia, describes the dinner as a “magical night.” a time where the community can come together and enjoy a romantic night for a cheap price. It’s the time where the community can come together and create a memory they’ll never forget. DiBona also stressed how powerful the friendships that were built throughout the night became. Participants from last year shared their food among each other, and stayed in touch with each other after the night was over; sending each other holiday cards and letters. As if the dinner is not enough, when the sun goes down guests can light up sparklers and enjoy a live band. The night is truly a wonderful experience that everyone should participate in. A time when complete strangers can come together and enjoy a night while building lasting memories. 10 Insight•May 2013

The IDentity Kit by Olga Astreika

N

ot every youth has the proper guidance and support to come out to their parents about their sexual orientation, but coming out can be extremely difficult, especially if you are from a religious background. You do not know how your parents will react to the news and you really do not know what to expect. In your mind, you’ll begin thinking about how you’re going to do it, what you will say, and most importantly determining when the right time is? This is why Crystal Cheatham authored The IDentity Kit: For Queer Christian Youth. Cheatham grew up in a fundamentalist background and when she was ready to come out about her sexual orientation, her pastor told her she would need to make a choice between her faith and her sexual orientation. This is when she realized there are other youth who need guidance and support when they are ready to take the next step. The IDentity Kit: For Queer Christian Youth came out in 2010, since then she has successfully mailed more than 100 ID Kits to youths all across the nation so they can receive guidance through their difficult journey. Insight Magazine was able to speak to Cheatham more in-depth about her ID Kits project, here is what we uncovered! Insight Magazine (IM): Why do you think the ID Kits are helpful for the youth today? Crystal Cheatham (CC): I think the Kits are helpful because not everyone has access to LGBTQ community centers like we do in Philly. In fact, supportive spaces that offer such a holistic pallet of programs are rare. William Way offers things for every kind of LGBTQ person — young, old, coming out, seasoned, kinky, conservative, therapy, health, and (my favorite) religion & spirituality. That is really the key for me. Our LGBTQ movement has followed the line of public education and we skip spirituality. The Kit I created is supposed to be a community center in a box for those who don’t have access to inner city resources. And it goes a step further than other online sources because it offers information about how to keep in touch with your spirituality while coming out or finding GSA’s. Spirituality is a large part of a persons life. Everyone should know without a doubt that their Higher Power loves them regardless of their orientation I think the Kits even go one further and show how holy books like the Bible can be affirming of LGBTQ people. It’s a really unique source. I’ve been mailing them to kids across the nation through my Kit to Teen

Campaign. This campaign allows teens to put their name on a list to receive a free Kit. I then try and match their request with a donor because the kits are $20. Sometimes we have the money sometimes we don’t! But I still try to get the Kits out each week. It’s probably the most important thing I do. IM: What is your main goal for the ID Kits? CC: My main goal with the entire project is to beat back the myths about LGBTQ identity and religion. I mean the myths are on both sides of the line. I’ve heard it said a lot in the queer community that “God doesn’t love me so why should I care?” I think that this kind of thinking doesn’t get us anywhere. On the other side of the line, there are a lot of misconceptions out there about what it means to be gay. When I was with Soulforce I saw that many adults were embarrassed that they didn’t know the correct terminology to use for LGBTQ identity. Many didn’t know what the difference was between transgender or transsexual, or that nobody likes to be called a “homosexual.” That kind of language barrier inhibited us from having honest conversations about how to be inclusive to queer people in their churches and schools. I mean, we can’t even talk about whether being gay was right or wrong until we’ve ironed out the issue of language. And you know what? Once people are comfortable in the language they are better prepared to be receptive to personal stories and learn why we believe it’s ok to be queer. What’s lacking is education. What’s lacking is a common lexicon shared by LGBTQ people and communities of faith. The project is so important because it provides that lexicon and does it in a non-confrontational way. IM: Can you please explain what the ID Kits are in more detail? CC: Check out http://youridk.com/the-kits/about/ to learn more about the individual Kits. I’m working on a general Kit for all audiences. This kit will speak to adults as well as those who are not Christian, but maintain a discussion on religion. The current Kit for Queer Christian Youth comes with a booklet. In it youth will find word definitions and explanations for world topics like heterosexism. They will learn why it is important to found their own believe system, and discover that they are not alone, no matter how isolated they think they are. Accompanying the booklet is a deck of playing cards. So often we gloss over individual identities and lump folks into categories. I think true liberation comes when we can celebrate our individuality, whether we are somehow handicapped, or speak English as a second language, or come from a low income family. The cards are my way of bringing to light the other side of the conversation. We are not all the same, and we’re not supposed to be. We should be celebrating that. IM: If you can provide one tip to youth preparing to come out to their parents, what would it be? CC: When I came out to my mother I was scared to death. I had a mentor (one of my pastor’s wife friends) coaching me through it. Each weekend I would go home with the task to tell my mom and then chicken out. The one thing I can say to anyone coming out (because we do it at so many different stages of our lives, and we will have to do it more than once) is to never let yourself become defensive. If you are choosing to be your authentic self you have nothing to be ashamed of. The minute you get defensive about your parents or friends or sisters reaction, that’s the moment they think they can prove your wrong. By remaining calm you are actually teaching them how to react to your coming out. Also, do them the favor of being able to tell someone else — at least one someone else. They will need to discuss it if it is a big deal to them. The last thing you want to do is drag someone into the closet with you.

New Discovery May Aid Those with Down

Syndrome

ew research may have uncovered the reason for decline in cognitive function and behavior in those with Down Syndrome, with hope of improving it in the future. Researchers at the Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute have found that those with Down Syndrome lack sufficient amounts of a receptor that is responsible for brain function and found that restoring it may improve learning and memory. The study, published in the Nature Medicine Journal, shows that a protein, SNX27, is produced less in those with the condition. However, when researchers restored the protein in mice, their cognitive function and behavior improved significantly. Because humans with Down Syndrome produce the same protein, researchers began to wonder if the outcome would be the same and are now working to look for molecules in humans that would increase production of the protein. While there are no definite conclusions yet, the medical community is thrilled at this new discovery and now know that the lack of the protein is partly to blame for developmental defects in those with Down syndrome. Down syndrome, a chromosomal condition, is typically associated with a delay in cognitive ability and physical growth. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately one in every 691 babies born in the United States is born with the condition.

EatColorful Fruits to Prevent ALS

recent study has confirmed that brightly-colored foods may prevent or slow the onset of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as ALS. Researchers have found that carotenoids, the antioxidants that make up the pigment in bright red, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables, can prevent the onset of ALS. This is welcomed news for sufferers of ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which affects approximately 20,000 to 30,000 Americans each year. It is a progressively degenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain, eventually resulting in paralysis. The study, published in the Annals of Neurology journal, analyzed more than one million participants. Researchers found that people with higher carotenoids in their diet had a decreased risk of ALS. While more studies are needed to examine the impact of nutrients on the disease, the medical community remains hopeful.

For the study, researchers examined the effectiveness of metabolic analysis in diagnosing patients. The technique provided promising results. Researchers recruited forty-three patients suffering from pancreatic cancer as well as forty-two healthy subjects, whom were randomly assigned to a training set. An additional forty-two pancreatic cancer patients and forty-one healthy subjects were assigned to a validation set. It was noted that metabolites were different among the pancreatic cancer patient’s blood, compared to the healthy subjects. The new diagnostic approach is a much safer and easier way to diagnose pancreatic cancer. In addition it improves the prognosis rate dramatically to detect the cancer earlier.

Childhood Depression May Influence Heart Problems Later in Life

by Maria Krishtul

ccording to a recent study, kids who are depressed are more likely to be obese, smoke cigarettes and physically inactive. All of these factors influence heart problems later in life. The study included 500 kids between the ages of 9 and 16. They were separated into three categories: those children whom have been diagnosed with depression, their depression-free siblings and a control group of kids with no depression history. More than twenty-two percent of the kids who were diagnosed with depression at the age of 9 were obese by the age of 16. Seventeen percent of the siblings were obese, and there was an eleven percent obesity rate among children who were not diagnosed with depression. The researcher then examined smoking and physical activity, which presented with similar result patterns. One third of the kids whom were diagnosed with depression became daily smokers, compared to 2.5 percent in the control group. Children who were suffering from depression were the least physically active group, their siblings were a little more active and those showing no signs of depression were the most active. However, the researchers noted that even though the study provides an association between childhood depression and obesity, smoking cigarettes and not being physically active, it does not present a cause-and-effect relationship.

C Unusual Bone Disease Caused by Too Much Tea Drinking

onsuming too much of something can be incredibly bad for our health, even tea. A 47-year-old Michigan woman drank a pitcher of tea made from more than 100 tea bags on a daily basis for 17-years. After going to the doctors, she found out she had developed a bone disease rarely seen in the U.S. A similar case occurred with a Detroit woman after she was experiencing pain in her lower back, arms, legs and hips for several years. When her doctor ordered her an X-ray it revealed that her bone density declined around her spinal vertebrae and calcifications of ligaments in her arm. When researchers examined the case they revealed that the woman may have skeletal fluorosis, which is a bone disease caused by consuming too much fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral found in not only tea, but also drinking water. Researchers stated that the patient’s blood levels of fluoride were more than four times higher than what is considered a normal amount. Though fluoride is added to water in the United States to prevent cavities, it is not nearly enough to cause fluorosis. Kidneys typically flush fluoride from the body, but if consumed in great amount, over time, the fluoride forms crystal deposits within the bones. Several other cases of fluorosis have been reported in the United States due to too much tea drinking. Patients were seen drinking more than a gallon of tea daily. Doctors typically instruct the patients to stop their tea drinking, which is when patients see an improvement in their symptoms. As far as fluoride deposits in the bone, it eventually goes away as the bones remodel themselves.

Foods to Eat for Healthy Summer Skin

ummer is right around the corner, so it is time for us to start thinking about our skin and the food we eat which may influence it. The good news is there are foods out there which nourish our skin from the inside out, provide us with a healthy way to repair and regenerate our skin without using skin products. If you are looking for a good source of vitamin C, nectarines, green leafy vegetables and citrus fruit are what you should be indulging in. Vitamin C allows us to build collagen, which is a fiber that keeps our skin plump. Some other sources of vitamin C include red peppers, tomatoes, strawberries and kiwi. Sunburn damage is a hassle to deal with so protect your skin this summer by eating deep red tomato sauce and red pepper for lycopene. A study which was published in the British Journal of Dermatology explained that lycopene aids our skin from ultraviolet light exposure, as well as reduces premature aging signs in the skin. Of course in the summer we never want to forget our water. Drinking water not only keeps us hydrated, but it also keeps skin moisturized from the inside. Stay away from overdrinking caffeine or alcohol, this may dry out and dehydrate your skin, causing lines to be much more visible. And don’t forget to eat a great amount of protein and mineral zinc which is crucial for cell repair and wound healing. Some protein sources include fish, beef, pork, eggs, and soy foods. Sources of zinc include oysters, oatmeal, nuts and seeds.

5/24—The Hangover: Part III

It’s safe to say that we’ll all be seeing this. It doesn’t matter if it’s better or worse than the other movies because it reunites our favorites, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and our beloved Allen (Zach Galifianakis). And while we’re eager to see what the whole gang is up to in round three, we’re more excited that the LA-based story will deviate from the forgotten debauchery formula of the first two films.

Suck

, SAYS SCIENCE

ou need to be selective about who you watch TV and movies with. Heck, you even need to be careful scrolling down your Facebook news feed. There are people lurking in every corner, just itching to tell you what happened on Downton Abbey or ruin the ending of that awesome suspenseful movie that just came out. These are cruel, vicious, inhumane people that should know that spoilers are bane of existence. And it’s not just us that think so. Science agrees! Jennifer Richler, at the Atlantic, did a study of the relationship between pleasure, pain and spoilers. The reason they absolutely, positively suck is a combination of anticipation and are inability to comprehend that what we’re watching isn’t real on any level. Richler writes first, that our obsession with make-believe comes from the fact that “on some level, we don’t distinguish fact from fiction. There’s research to back this up: For example, a study found that people refuse to eat a piece of fudge shaped to look like feces, even though they know it’s just fudge. Appearance and reality get blurred. We like stories about sex because we like having sex, and somewhere in our minds, the two are the same… This blurring actually happens at the neurological level: The conscious, thinking parts of our brain tell us that a story isn’t real, but the more primitive parts tell us it is. This research suggests one explanation for why spoilers suck: They remind us that a story is just a story. It’s hard to get transported when you already know where you’ll end up — in real life you don’t have that knowledge.” But it’s more than just that. Richler further argues the point that “people enjoy the anticipation of something pleasurable as much as — or sometimes even more than — they enjoy the thing itself. That’s why a study found that people would rather postpone a free dinner at a French restaurant by a week than have it right away; they want the pleasure of looking forward to the meal. As Harvard psychology professor Daniel Gilbert says in his book Stumbling on Happiness, “Forestalling pleasure is an inventive technique for getting double the juice from half the fruit.” So, the next time that some jerk comes up to you, eager to rave about the season finale of Homeland, you tell him that science wants him to shut up!

BRAS

CONSPIRING WITH GRAVITY

B

ras. Brasseries. Unmentionables. Whatever you want to call your “over the shoulder boulder holder,” its raison d’etre is to make sure your boobs don’t follow gravity down south. Obviously this bra or that bra can throw in some added perks – pad you here, push you up there, squeeze you together, etc – but the basic formula is universally known: wear a bra = no sagging boobs. Not true, says Jean-Denis Rouillon. The professor, who teaches at the Franche-Comte University in Besancon and has a background in sports medicine, recently disclosed to France Info the results of his fifteen-year study on female breasts (it’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it). Rouillon claims to have discovered that women who wear bras actually have saggier boobs than women who don’t — “Medically, physiologically, anatomically, the breast derives no benefit from being denied gravity. On the contrary, it becomes saggier with a bra.” His study tracked the breast developments of 330 French women, aged 18 to 35 and found that the nipples of those studied “lifted an average of seven millimeters per year in relation to the shoulders” if the subject did not wear a bra. Now before we go burning all our bras, we should take note of Rouillon’s caveat. He warns that a braless life is not actually for everyone: “It all depends on the structure of each breast. An overweight, 45-year-old woman with three kids has no business not wearing a bra.” Moral of the story: hot, young small breasted women should trash their bras; the rest of the female population should keep them on.

Model Scouting

Anorexic Girls

W

e all know that models are not cut quite like the rest of us. They’re actually about a third of the size of most of us. That’s kind of in their job description. Naturally, there have been many people up in arms, criticizing the industry for pushing unrealistic standards of beauty to the rest of the world while simultaneously promoting unhealthy behavior in the models themselves. This behavior is largely reprimanded. But, not by the Swedes! Sweden’s largest eating disorders treatment clinic — the 1,700-bed Stockholm Center for Eating Disorders — has to contend with countless scouts for some of Sweden’s biggest modeling agencies banging down its doors. These scouts are actively and persistently trying to recruit current patients. In one exemplary incident, a big time agent approached a fourteen year old girl attending the center for an eating disorder and left her with a business card. Chief doctor, Anna-Maria af Sandeberg, told Metro Newspaper that the center finds the behavior “repugnant. People have stood outside our clinic and tried to pick up our girls because they know they are very thin.” And have a sickness keeping them that way to boot! Some of the agencies involved in this practice defend themselves by arguing that they would never “urge” anyone to lose weight and that they are approaching who they perceive as normal, slim young people. The attempt at justification falls on deaf ears, as most rational people realize that you don’t need to “urge” someone who is already sick.

e plan for life and we plan for death. At some point people sit down with their lawyers to write their wills, talk to their families about the money under the bed or make some sort of arrangements for when they say “sayonara” to the world. Even Facebook has addressed the issue of virtual life after physical death by providing the option for relatives to “memorialize” an account once its owner has died. Now Google is getting in on this pre-mortem planning. Google recently announced a process that lets you plan for the eventuality of your own death, called “Inactive Account Manager.” As Slate.com puts it, it “sounds a bit impersonal, but is admittedly less blunt than the obvious alternative, ‘Google Death.’” The process basically allows you to have your account deleted after it has been inactive for “x” amount of time (your choice of three months to a year). This would get rid of your YouTube videos and account, Google+ posts, Google Drive files, Gmail messages and basically any internet association you’ve had with Google. Don’t want the virtual slate wiped clean? You can, instead, opt to have the data sent to one or more of your trusted friends and/ or relatives. Google isn’t too trusting of these people however, and before it sends your information to the friend or relative on record, it will try to contact you via text message and secondary email to make sure you aren’t just “hibernating.” May 2013•Insight 21

Located in the heart of Old City, Philadelphia, Serrano will leave you coming back for more. Executive Chef, Gina Rodriquez recently released her spring menu, which offers diners some of the most mouth-watering food. To provide you with the most delicious experience, Chef Rodriguez does not only settle on one type of recipe. Putting her creative side to work, she discovers her unique recipes over a period of time. Much like a science project, cooking involves a lot of attempting and experimenting with various foods and spices. However, this way she is sure guests are enjoying her personal creations. “I believe that cooking is more than just the act of putting food on a plate. The passion for this field runs through my veins and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am currently writing a book about the industry through the eyes of a passionate female. Mostly I’m finding it is amusing stories about characters I have met in a kitchen and a little bit about empowering yourself to work through obstacles of every sort with dignity, respect and integrity,” explained Chef Rodriguez. The talented Chef’s mother worked in food service for a school district, so since she was a little girl she would keep her mom company while she cooked. In addition, Chef Rodriguez’s grandmother worked at the hospital food service all her life. Both, her mother and grandmother, were her biggest inspirations for her love of food. It’s incredibly difficult for us to suggest our favorite food to you because that would just be misleading. Everything that Serrano offers, as we’ve already mentioned, is absolutely phenomenal. You won’t taste anything like it anywhere else. But, if you must settle on one dish, you absolutely must try their Jumbo Scallops! The U10 diver scallops are prepared in a pan and served over oyster mushrooms, andouille sausage and fingerling potatoes ragout. The whole dish is glazed in an Arbol chili gastrique, providing a savory, sweet and spicy-fresh taste. Can you say yum? So what are you doing for dinner tonight? We hope to see you at Serrano! Could Brittney Griner Play in the NBA?

T

by Matthew Balick

he Dallas Mavericks have an interesting personality. Their go to guy in Dirk Nowitski, the large, sharp shooting German and they most certainly do not play the most conventional basketball. But the man that gives the team the most character of all is their owner, the brilliant Mark Cuban. Cuban is a very successful business owner with a very diverse array of businesses and investments and in 2011, won a NBA Championship with his Dallas Mavericks. He is eccentric, very controversial, but most of all, he is very, very smart. Cuban now has a new idea to improve his business portfolio as he is considering drafting the first woman player to ever play in the NBA, Brittney Griner. The Baylor superstar is arguably one of the best woman basketball players in NCAA history. Her resume is possibly as impressive as Cuban’s business portfolio. Brittney Griner has the most blocks in NCAA history, the second highest scorer in NCAA history, and has 3 more dunks than all women’s basketball combined with 18. She is 6’8”, is incredibly athletic, and she could really keep up with men. There is no question if given the opportunity and a team that will make her a key piece of their team. Mark Cuban has said that he would either draft her as early as the second round if she is the best available, but at worst, he would “have no problem” with giving her a tryout. Cuban believes that as long as she can play with men, she deserves the opportunity. Surprisingly though, University of Connecticut women’s head coach, Geno Auriemma, thinks this is a huge mistake. Auriemma has coached some of the best women in college basketball, but does not believe that a woman could possibly keep up with the men that play at the professional level. In a country and a modern world where men and women are thought in many ways to be equal, surprisingly this is not the case. This is a debate that many ways is embedded in the history of our country and the preconception that women can not possibly keep up with men in athletics, business, or any field of occupations, because that is the way it has always been. There have been many improvements in our country’s policies as well as the viewpoint of many Americans who had once believed that women were inferior to men, but unfortunately the ultimate goal of creating a mentality that promotes equality among the genders is yet to be completely achieved. Mark Cuban is not necessarily the man that would be expected to be the one to help our generation become more accepting and more open-minded, but it appears that he has gotten to the point of where he sees ability, despite the gender of the person with this ability. Mark Cuban’s willingness to sign a woman player to play for the Mavericks must be followed by other owners in other sports and other leagues and organizations in the United States, to continue to further the goal of equality in America.

Returns to Number One Ranking

arch 25 was the Arnold Palmer Invitational, an annual tournament held by one of the greatest golfers of all time and Tiger Woods’ favorite childhood golfer as a child. Like he says often, he tends to do so well at this tournament in particular because of his love for Arnold Palmer and his love for the course that it is held at every year, Bay Hill. But this specific tournament meant more than just a win for the man that Tiger has adored all his life; Tiger Woods has returned to number one status. Officially, Tiger Woods is the best golfer in the world again, even after his drought of wins and his extreme personal woes. With his divorce to his wife in 2010, the confusing visit to the hospital on that bizarre Thanksgiving night, and eventually his fall from grace in the golf world, it appeared that Woods never would be the same golfer that he once was. In the early 2000s, Tiger Woods was possibly the most impressive golfer to ever play the game. His span of wins from winning four straight majors to a US Open win on a torn ACL, Woods seemed to be a superhuman golfer, completely unstoppable. But then he genuinely couldn’t play golf at a top five level. Woods’ swing was in shambles, with a bad slice and sometimes a pull partially because of his problems with his wife, but just as much with his knee. He couldn’t practice anywhere close to as much as he was once able to and emotionally he wasn’t able to produce the way he once could. But, because of this past year, and his win at Bay Hill, Tiger Woods is back. He has been playing as well as could possibly be expected and he really has a great chance to win majors over the next few years to chase Nicklaus to have the most majors in history.

Volcanoes

by Matthew Balick

T

he military uses drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, mostly in urban warfare. The use of drones on most levels is to defeat an enemy and is a very violent vehicle to attack others; these are not known as peaceful machines. But the definition of a drone really is not only warlike and useful. Drones are not always equipped with bombs and missiles and are most certainly not always used to hurt people. Even for military purposes, drones can be used for reconnaissance or surveillance. Without risking the lives of pilots or soldiers, the military is able to use UAVs to help gain knowledge of the enemy and win wars. Drones are in constant use in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan with the pilots of the planes stationed in Nevada, without having to risk their lives physically in the planes. There have also been rumors that the United States is using drones against their own citizens, a debate that has constantly sparked political controversy. Although this is how we think of what drones are used for, UAVs do not only need to be used in the eyes of war. NASA has been granted to use three dragon eye UAVs, which are very small, light, drones used by the Marines for reconnaissance. NASA equipped the dragon eyes with various measuring instruments in order to collect data on volcanoes. Using the UAVs, NASA was able to fly very close to volcanoes and observe the levels of the sulfur dioxide and other elements that affect the lives of those living around the volcano as well as helping researchers to better understand volcano behavior. Aircrafts and planes have been used previously in history as a method to get data from volcanoes, but, as expected, it was extremely dangerous for pilots manning the aircrafts to be as close to the volcanoes as they needed to get the accurate data. Just like in the military, the drones use helped NASA to complete their mission without risking the lives of anyone. The drones were not only useful in this data collection because of safety, but also because the UAV’s do not tend to take in much air since their engines are electric. Most planes would take in the ash as air, thus destroying the engines. Thanks to the Marine’s kind donation of UAVs, NASA will be able to better understand how volcanoes can be monitored, better protecting the people living around it. The drones will provide NASA with a starting point for better technology to come so that the unknown of volcanoes will be better understood in time to come.

R

esearchers all over the country are continuing to prove that this current generation will be able to solve many of the questions that surround us as we currently try to improve our world. Engineering students from various schools are constantly working towards new inventions and ideas to technologically improve the world as well as better understand the ways that our world works. Researchers from Virginia Tech College of Engineering have taken this idea to a very interesting level, as they have created a robot jellyfish to study how the sea creature operates. The robotic jellyfish was created to replicate a lion’s mane jellyfish, which is the largest species of known jellyfish. Some have been recorded to be over seven feet in diameter with tentacles over one hundred feet, although in most cases a lion’s mane jellyfish sting is not fatal. The jellyfish tend to stay close to the surface of the water, usually no more than 20 feet deep. In the case of lion’s mane jellyfish, the larger the jellyfish, the more efficient it is. Larger jellyfish do not have to use as much energy as smaller ones do to travel the same distance. To recreate a lion’s mane jellyfish, the researchers used a nickel metal hydride battery in order to keep the robotic fish powered on its own for long periods of time. The robot has eight metal arms and a squishy silicon body, making the robot look and act very similar to an actual lion’s mane jellyfish. But why would this project be so important for the researchers to complete? The United States Navy are eager to use tis creation made by the Virginia Tech Researcher not to survey enemies, but to survey underwater environments and behaviors of certain sea creatures. Thanks to the Navy’s financial assistance, Virginia Tech has created a robot that appears to be just like a jellyfish, and will be able to tell us more about the ocean and how it works.

Season: Mortgage Rates and the Best Time to Buy

t seems simple; the more people exiting the work force, the fewer amounts of jobs needed. However, according to the Department of Labor, America needs to add between 80,000 and 120,000 jobs per month to keep up with the population growth. But why? According to experts, there are three variables that determine the growth of the labor force: fertility rate, the participation rate (the # of people who want to work), and the rate of immigration. While recent reports suggest that there is a decline in fertility rates, the rate of immigration has remained steady and the fertility rates are stronger compared to other developed nations. However, the growing population is a good thing, according to analysts. Steady population growth is good for the economy, as new entrants in the workforce supply and demand labor, as well as needing things like clothes to wear, cars to commute to work, and homes to live in; the demand for those items creates jobs, which supports the population growth. So, the next time you hear about the need for more jobs, smile…it’s a good thing!

If Baby Boomers Are Retiring, Why Are More Jobs Needed?

ooking to purchase a home? Financial analyst Tom Reddin says to expect the mortgage rates to remain below the four percent mark for the remainder of the year. However, he cautions that those rates could spike should the economy continue to get better. Reddin is basing his predictions on several factors including the rebound of the housing market, as home prices have been steadily increasing over recent years with the inventory of homes declining. Also, the average price of homes is increasing again, with the median home price in January coming in at $173,600, up 12.3 percent from January 2012. He also points to the steady growth of the national economy as being indicative of a potential spike in mortgage rates. While a gradual increase of mortgage rates is expected over the remainder of the year, Reddin still expects the rates to remain under four percent, making the next few months prime buying time while the rates are largely predictable.

Can Make You Rich and Famous?

R

emember the wildly popular “Charlie Bit My Finger” video posted on You Tube last year? The video was viewed over 400 million times and became the surprise hit of 2012. Well, turns out, the parents who shot it netted over $150,000 in ad revenues generated from the video. However, don’t run to make one of your own in hopes of getting the same cash windfall; analysts say, chances are, it will never go viral. While temporary popularity is more of a realistic expectation with viral videos, turning that popularity into cash is not. A recent article in the Seattle Times highlighted examples of people who were able to gain internet fame but had very little monetary pay off. One case involved a video of a kid playing the drums on a washing machine; over the course of only a few months, the video had been viewed more than 1.7 million times. He and his dad were even flown out for national TV and convention appearances. However, when it came to actual money in the pocket, the video only netted about $400 in ad revenues. So, the next time you are seeking to make a few extra bucks, stick to what you know. Making a living off of You Tube seems to be as likely as winning the lottery.

A Dose of Insight

My sister has been dating her girlfriend for a month now and I have the vibe that the girl is bad news. But whenever I go to bring it up to my sister it just becomes a screaming fight. I want to protect her as she is my baby sister, but I am so tired over arguing about it daily. What do I do? ✽ Unfortunately, there is nothing that you can do. Your sister will make her own decisions and fighting about it will only push her further away from you. If you were with someone who made you happy, your sister’s opinion probably wouldn’t deter you from dating them either. Clearly, you’re coming from a good place, but you have to understand that she will not take your advise. Whether she stays with her girlfriend, or breaks up with her; this has to be her own decision and not yours. You should

consider putting your over-protective big sister feelings aside and just keeping quiet. When we feel someone is judging our personal live, we tend to shut down. It will be easier to shut you out of her life, than to attempt to see your point. Maybe someday your sister will mature and come to see your point of view on things. Until then, give her the respect and the space she needs. Just because she is younger than you, does not mean she will want to listen to everything you say.

✽ Your are not alone. Graduates of the last several years are facing the same predicament. In the mean time, you should make the effort to get some sort of job. Clearly, it will be something you are over-qualified for. But bringing in just that little bit of money will earn back respect with your girlfriend. This way she sees that you’re making some sort of contribution. Also, I would make sure you’re picking up the slack around the house in the meantime. If you can’t help out financially, make sure that everything

is clean and there is always food on the table. Do things for her that she doesn’t have time to do. At least this will show her how much you appreciate her and how hard she works. Lastly, explore different avenues for finding work. Maybe start with a temp agency. In plenty of situations temps become full time. The most important thing is to get your foot in the door. Stay confident and reassure your girlfriend that it will all work out. Make sure that she doesn’t just hear your words. Make sure that she sees your actions.

My girlfriend and I recently moved in together, and I also recently graduated college. Congratulations to me, right? No, not really. Since I graduated I have not been able to find a job, so paying the bills has solely been on her. She fights with me every week telling me to find a job, but it has been hard. I try to explain to her that it’s not like I don’t try. I apply to many places each day and even have my resume posted online. But she just doesn’t understand. I don’t know what I could do anymore. I hate fighting with her, but it’s not like I’m not trying.

Throughout my childhood, my mom was a single parent. She was into heavy drinking, very abusive both verbally and physically to my younger sister and I. She would complain about how upset she was that we did not die at birth. At the age of 14, my sister and I moved out. We started working and made our way out of the mess we lived in. It is now 35 years later and our mom is in very poor health conditions and is asking for our help. However, I cannot fathom the thought of seeing her. The abuse is still very fresh in my mind. We did nothing to receive the negative attitude from her. Would it be wrong for us not to take care of our mother?

✽ It would not be wrong. In this situation you really have to listen to your gut. Whatever you decide will not be wrong. You and your sister have every right to feel the way that you feel. Nothing hurts more than betrayal by a parent. The things that she did to you left deep scars that might not ever fully heal. However, you should sit down with your sister and weigh your feelings. Can you attribute her actions to the alcohol? Do you want to be neglectful just

like your mom was? Will spending time with her in the end give your closure? There as so many questions that you need to ask yourself. The answers will determine your plan of action. You don’t owe anything to your mom, but you do owe yourself to make the right decision. Either way, be confident and make sure that you can live with yourself for the rest of your life.

I recently found out that my boyfriend signed up for a one-year contract with the Army. We have been living together and even began to make plans to start a family. When I learned about the Army it was news to me. He did not discuss it with me or consider my feelings about it. I guess I should be proud and happy for him, but I do not want to put my family on hold. And what bothers me the most is, he didn’t even consider my feelings about it. ✽ You need to determine how you feel about this before things get more serious between you. Being an army wife is not something to take lightly. Your whole life will revolve around his job. You will have to be the strong one at home that’s basically raising your kids on your own for most of the time. Yes, you should be proud of him. It’s a very noble thing to do. Maybe he didn’t consult you because it wouldn’t matter what you said. Clearly this is something he

decided to devote himself to. Your decision now is to either support him or jump ship. Think about what kind of lifestyle you want for yourself. Ask him what he sees himself doing in the next ten years. The most important part of having a lasting relationship is being on the same page. Your goals and his goals should be similar. He’s confident about his future so you need to make some decisions about yours as well. Do what will make you happy. May 2013•Insight 33
