I was getting much-needed rest when I received a call from East Orange, New Jersey. It was my “bestest friend in the whole wide world,” Patrice. She sounded distraught and I immediately took notice, wondering if she was calling to share some bad news about one of our family members. If anything was going on with either of our families, I knew that after 40 years, Patrice would know what was up. Her news was not good and although it was not about either of our immediate families, it was still about family, because that’s how things were growing up in East Orange. When she told me of Whitney’s death, I said her information had to be wrong. She said she just knew that I had more information because after all, I am a journalist. Next came the texts messages, calls and tweets. I called my mother, who is a long-time member of New Hope Baptist Church and she knows Whitney’s mom, Cissy. My parents also knew Whitney’s father from the 1960s. My brother and I went to school with Whitney’s brother, Gary, at what is now the Whitney E. Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts. Yes, this was indeed family and clearly from the calls and posts on Facebook and Twitter, East Orange was feeling the pain that so many have expressed around this world. When I left East Orange for college, Whitney, or “Nippy” as she was called, was a mere 12 years old, so she was never on my radar screen. I knew Gary had a younger brother and sister but all I was interested in was his good-looking, basketball-playing, singing self. It was wonderful to watch him go on to a successful college and later professional basketball career and to see his sister growing up and taking the world by storm. Unfortunately, several of our family members in East Orange found themselves caught up by an element that found its way into our community and caused so much devastation. Returning home for summer vacations and short visits was not as much fun as because so many of my “family” members were hooked on drugs, HIV positive or dead. I would pray often because I wanted my “family” to be drug and disease-free. I wanted my “family” to be healthy and productive. I wanted this world to be a better place and I knew drugs were wreaking havoc everywhere. A deeply spiritual person, Whitney had her issues, but she wanted a better world too. I was proud of her many successes. She was beautiful, talented and she made the home team proud. Even when she had issues, I was careful not to judge because we all have issues. I am saddened by her death. She represents so many. I heard from some of those “family“ members who had always cheered for her because her success at shaking the “monkey off her back” gave them hope that they could too. I watched an interview with her in 2002 when journalist Diane Sawyer asked her what she hoped to be doing in 10 years. Whitney said she wanted to be retired, enjoying her daughter, and she also talked about being a grandmother. Whitney had big wonderful dreams and that makes her death seem even more tragic because despite her issues she still had faith and wanted to live. Over the past year, I have heard folks say some really cruel things about people who have made the transition. There was a time when we at least had the decency to not speak unkindly of the departed. Not today. Everyone is an expert on Whitney’s career, marriage and every other aspect of her life. Two days after Patrice’s call, I received another call from a close friend, Dallas-Grambling Alumni President Cathy Conwright, telling me about the murder of my friend and Dallas-Ft. Worth FAMU Alumni President Terrance Hunt. Still with a heavy heart, I talked to fellow journalist Linda Jones who on Wednesday night told me about the passing of long-time friend and supporter Bandele Tyehimba, whose wife had just agreed to become a contributing editor/writer for I Messenger. I suddenly became overwhelmed. Then early Friday morning, hours after I attended a tribute for Jordan Randy Blair, the publisher of the Elite News, I received a text from his cousin Marcus and a call from his assistant, Bettye, informing me of his transition. I thought about all of the great contributions Whitney, Terrance, Bandele and Jordan made during their short time on Earth and I am so thankful. Yes, I tend to want to concentrate on the positives! So, in the spirit of Whitney Houston, and those wonderful young men, moving forward it would be wonderful if people could stop doing something that Whitney really disliked: judging. Try not to say anything bad about a person, especially since you probably have no idea of their reality. And, if you see someone in trouble, don’t talk about them, offer help.

Plano North Links raise awareness about heart disease Taking on issues is the norm for members of Links, Inc. and the Plano North Metroplex Chapter continues to stress the importance of those programs centered around the arts, nation trends and services, international trends and services, youth services and health and human services. President Mazzie Moses Last week, the chapter held its annual red dress event at Arlington Hall Lee Park recently to raise the awareness of women, regarding heart healthy living. In a switch from previous years, when the chapter invited the American Heart Association to speak about heart disease and prevention, the committee decided on a style show. This year, the committee decided to call the brunch “Heart Healthiness With Style” and planned a style show. Each participant modeled a red dress and shared their heart healthy regimen. Organizers said, by showcasing this group of women, the chapter hoped to send a variety of messages to women about how they can become more heart healthy. The models were women familiar to the group, women who serve to inspire others to commit themselves to improving their health by establishing regimens that lead to healthy lifestyles. “The heart healthy style show is a first step toward doing something a bit different with our red dress event, and thanks to the ingenuity of Gayle Barge, Plano North Metroplex Chapter’s Vice-President of Programs, and the support and guidance of Mazzie Moses, Chapter president, we hope to have a greater impact on the women within the communities we serve,” said Hazel Carlos, Co- chair of National Trends and Services for Plano North Metroplex Chapter, along with Tracey Brister-Pugh. It was a packed house for this year’s event.
There are five chapters in the Cluster and members from throughout the Metroplex supported the effort. There’s a connection between the red dress event and its impact on women’s health in general, Ms. Moses, President of Plano North Metroplex Chapter of Links, Inc. explained: “We have worked to create an atmosphere of awareness that is fun and beneficial. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is devoted to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. As women, we have a duty to take care of our health because taking care of ourselves allows us to care for our families and loved ones more effectively.”
The event is empowering for the women, said Ms. Moses, who also talked about other programs that the 52 members of her chapter are responsible for, including one that mentors to 20 families headed by single mothers. “We work with them for three years, making sure these families are aware of resources that are available to them,” said Ms. Moses. “We provide information on financial literacy and we give them resources to help improve their conditions. “We’re working to build stronger communities and families and we need our women healthy,” Ms. Moses concluded.

Hotep Family and especially to those who are "Ready for the Revolution!" It saddens me to announce that my dear friend of nearly 27 years has passed on to the place of our holy African Ancestors. Brother Bandele Tyeimba, CoO w n e r o f t h e Pa n A f r i c a n Connections Books & Resource Center passed away in his sleep last night (Wednesday, February 15). His long-time soul mate and loving wife Akwete said he became a little tired and decided to rest for a while. When she decided to retire to bed she found he was unresponsive and she quickly tried to find the reason for his unresponsiveness. Finally after attempting several ways to bring him around, she dialed 911, but it was too late to revive him.
Our Brother Warrior leaves behind three beautiful children whom many of us watched and assisted in bringing about their development. They have all grown up to be great examples of how the movement can be a wonderful environment to raise children who truly understand the world and their role in it. Much like Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, Atse Haile Selassie, Amilcar Cabral, Frantz Fanon, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr. Kwame Toure, Asa Hilliard, Khalid Abdul Muhammad, Tupac Shakur and many others, our Warrior Brother Bandele left his mark on our struggle forever. I will never forget my travel with him to Ghana. It will truly remain one of the high points in my life and growth as a proud African. Please let us take a moment to remember particularly as we look around our homes, offices !
and places of abode at the many African products our Brother Warrior provided us towards uplifting our movement struggle in this community of Dallas, Texas, surrounding areas of North Texas, the Texas state and indeed the nation of America. We will forever be grateful for his continued insistence that we continue to "move our people forward towards a United States of Africa." Sure we will mos def miss him, but this is not a time for downward feelings. ATLANTA- Serita Jakes, bestselling author, women’s ministr y director, an advocate for women’s empowerment who stands against violence against women and wife of Bishop T.D. Jakes of The Potter’s House, was honored by the Tr umpet Foundation as a 2012 recipient of the Spiritual Enlightenment Award. Mrs. Jakes was presented the award by Trumpet Awards founder, Xernona Clayton, at the Trumpet Awards Annual Prayer Breakfast. Mrs. Jakes was selected to receive this honor along with other national and international leaders. For nearly two decades, the Trumpet Foundation has highlighted pioneers in the African American community for their achievements in their respective fields, such

Mrs. Jakes was recognized for her commitment to empowering women all over the world and for her work to end domestic violence. In her role as executive director of The Potter’s House Women’s Ministries, Mrs. Jakes oversees Rahab International Ministries for domestic violence victims and survivors as well as the highly acclaimed God’s Leading Ladies Life Enrichment Program (GLL), a curriculum-based program that empowers women from all walks of life.

Kudos for Dispute Mediation Service Dallas, Texas – The Dispute Mediation Service will receive a honorary proclamation from the Dallas County Commissioner’s Court for 30 years of service Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. Ironically, the county cut 100% of its funding for the organization at the beginning of the year as part of the County’s cutback, but DMS continues as the leading nonprofit organization solving disputes, both court ordered and private for metroplex citizens. Everyone has experienced the trials of being in the middle of a dispute. Everyday people lose jobs, homes or their families. Credit card companies are suing citizens, and mortgage companies are foreclosing on homes. All of these situations cause stress and conflict. Although conflict is a normal part of life, it can be debilitating until resolved. For 30 years a local nonprofit, Dispute Mediation Service (DMS), has provided a forum for the underserved or those without a voice an opportunity to speak up and be heard. DMS is in the business of resolving conflicts through processes such as Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration. Helping Dallas County citizens resolve their disputes and conflicts is our mission. By the reduction of violence and conflict, a safer, healthier and happier community is the result. Having helped over 250,000 Dallas County citizens resolve their disputes, on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, the Dallas County Commissioner’s Court will recognize DMS for its service to the Dallas community and court system for providing access to the justice system to those who would otherwise have limited access. Although Dallas County Commissioner’s Court has provided 100% of DMS funding for the past 28 years, in 2011, the decision was made to no longer fund the agency. According to DMS Board President and local attorney, Susan Austin, “Although difficult, DMS board members, staff and volunteers are dedicated to continuing our mission. Diversifying our funding sources is a challenge, but is being done.” As Dallas’ only conflict resolution nonprofit, DMS manages programs for domestic violence victims, indigent citizens and juveniles. DMS provides conciliation, mediation and arbitration services and training. In addition, DMS handles scheduling and coordination services at affordable costs and guarantees quality mediators who are well versed in conflict resolution techniques.
Priscilla Arts Club hosts display In honor of Black History Month, the Priscilla Art Club, the oldest African American women’s organization in Dallas County, will host a display of its centennial legacy quilt made by its members on Saturday, February 25, 2012, from 2:00 p.m.– 4:00 p.m., at the African American Museum of Life and Culture, Dallas Fair Park. Admission is FREE. “The idea of a custom designed legacy quilt started out as a novel idea from our Systems Committee in recognition of our 100th anniversary. The twenty-two club members quickly became engaged in seeing it to fruition and we are happy to honor the beauty, the inspiration and the legacy of our Club” said Shirley Porter Ware, Club President. The Priscilla Art Club, organized in 1911 as a club for young matrons, was organized under the encouragement and direction of Mrs. Mattie Mansfield Chalmers. The organization’s purposes were to establish and maintain the aesthetic, promote congenial companionship and foster all social and community interests that pertain to the general uplift. The Club was named for Priscilla, a New Testament woman of extraordinary culture and the wife of Aquila, a Jewish tentmaker. Since its auspicious beginning, the Club has invited into its membership many of Dallas’ most distinguished homemakers. These members have exhibited an interest or are talented in arts and crafts. Besides being homemakers and mothers, the members have been and some still are principals, school administrators, teachers, business owners, social workers, church leaders and servant volunteers in the local community. Throughout the century of service and sisterhood recorded in The Priscilla’s prolific history include mention of service rendered in support of the World War I efforts by rolling bandages that were sent overseas to the field hospitals in France. For several years, the Priscillas decorated the shotgun house, located in Old City Park, in observance of the holiday season. In more recent years, the members have decorated t-shirts and jackets made from sweat shirts to give to men and women in local assisted living facilities. Club members have made crocheted skull caps in a variety of vivid colors and patterns and donated to cancer patients actively engaged in treatment regimens. Regardless of change, the Priscilla Art Club’s concern for its artistic endeavors and for civic and social uplift will continue with deepening interest and commitment as the tradition of the founders’ legacy is carried forward. !

CVS “Project Health” to deliver more than $21 million worth of screening events WOONSOCKET, R.I. – CVS/pharmacy, the nation's leading retail pharmacy, has announced the launch of Project Health (Proyecto Salud in Spanish), a wellness program delivering more than $21 million worth of free health screenings to multicultural communities. The program, which aims to prevent disease through early detection, grew from CVS/ pharmacy’s highly successful To Your Health/A Su Salud campaigns. This year, Project Health will offer an array of free comprehensive health risk assessments and screenings during five disease-specific national health awareness months from American Heart Month (February) to Diabetes Awareness Month (November). Over 1,000 Project Health events are scheduled for 2012 in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Project Health is a part of efforts by CVS/pharmacy to improve access to preventive care and ensure that cost is not a barrier to important services, like professional health assessments and screenings. Project Health events, while offered to address and raise awareness of ethnic health disparities, are open to everyone and will not require an appointment. Medical personnel will be on hand to provide diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and osteoporosis screenings,
and examine patients for oral care issues. Referrals for mammograms and pap smears will also be provided as well as consultations with nurse practitioners and CVS pharmacists. Once screened, CVS/pharmacy will help patients through on-site consultations with bilingual (Spanish/English) nurse practitioners who will analyze the results and refer patients to no-cost or low-cost medical facilities within that neighborhood or to their primary care physician should additional follow-up be required. The Project Health events will be held at designated CVS/pharmacy locations on weekdays only from 3 – 7 pm daily with no appointment necessary during American Heart Month (February), National Minority Health Month (April), Immunization Awareness Month (August), Dental Hygiene Awareness Month (October) and Diabetes Awareness Month (November). In working with her on the set of “Sparkle,” I knew her to be a consummate professional whose soulful rendition of an old time gospel number brought both cast and crew to tears. It was reminiscent of the early career of her mother, world renowned gospel legend, Cissy Houston. It is a one-of-a-kind memory that I will cherish. In my own personal sadness, I pray for Cissy and Whitney's daughter, Bobbi Kristina and their extended family, friends and countless fans. UNTOLD: The New Orleans 9th Ward You Never Knew By Lynette Norris Wilkinson Hurricane Katrina impacted people in so many ways and UNTOLD: The New Orleans 9th Ward You Never Knew provides insight into the lies of 16 survivors. The stories are passionate, sometimes amusing, awe-inspiring and at times will move the reader to tears. There were some tough times in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama especially when the levees broke. A year later, numerous awards were won for coverage of a time that was very painful. Many lives were lost and others lost their homes. Thousands were displaced, moved from the places they had vied in for their entire lives; some never to return. Ms. Wilkinson found the ideal group to put the story of Hurricane Katrina into perspective. She chose people with unique perspectives and the result is a book of wonderful memories emerging from a tragic circumstance. During a recent interview, Ms. Wilkinson said it was important to share the stories from 9th Ward. Sure there have been plenty of stories told, but there also appeared to be a lack of understanding in many instances. Outsiders could not begin to understand the feelings that ran deep throughout the 9th Ward. Hopefully, by reading the words of Micah, who talks about the “culture” of the 9th Ward, and the others, readers will “get it. A very skilled writer, Ms. Wilkinson paints a vivid picture of her life in New Orleans. Rich with history, Untold, is a joy to read, as you meet the writers and learn about their stories of survival, faith and hope. The accompanying pictures are profound. The devastation that survivors lived through makes their stories all the more compelling and thought-provoking.

challenges; at one point she decided that life was not living so she attempted suicide. Fortunately she was revived and able to see another day. The problem for Natasha was getting over her past--one that was filled with neglect, abuses and poor decisions on her part. At a young age, when Natasha should have been playing with her dolls and enjoying kindergarten, her mother’s boyfriend begin teaching her how to perform oral sex. Of course he threatened her to keep their little secret and eventually he raped her. Author LaDrena DeCuir skillfully tells Natasha s story with passion and an insight that is chilling. The characters actually leap off the pages in this unfortunate tale of adults failing miserably at parenting and a young girl-child turned woman searching for love in all the wrong places. It appears that Natasha really doesn’t want to die. Her attempts are merely attentiongetting efforts because she is hurting so much. There’s a lot of truth throughout The Men in My Life & the Women in Theirs. Natasha is not the only young girl to be rejected by her mother after being molested by her mother’s man. The travesty was exacerbated by the fact that not only did Natasha share her experiences; her mother actually walked in on her young child performing a sexual act. What happened at first has readers cheering and praising the mom. Unfortunately for Natasha her mother eventually chooses the pervert over her daughter. It won’t be the last time someone has to make a decision and they choose someone other than Natasha. The Men in My Life & the Women in Theirs is a quick and easy read; even though it will tug at several of your emotions. Ms. DeCuir leaves you wanting to know more about if and how Natasha survives. I guess we will have to wait until the sequel!

What makes Sins of the Mother even more enjoyable has to be knowing that as long as she is alive; there’s more to her story. Those efforts were rewarded Saturday as James was announced as one of eight former athletes who will be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame later this summer. Joining James as new inductees are former NFL running backs Deuce McAllister, Warick Dunn and Terry Robiskie, former Louisiana Tech and NFL wide receiver Roger Carr, former Southern football coach Pete Richardson, LSU baseball star Eddy Furness and former jockey Mark Guidry. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL-HBCU INVITATIONAL Major League Baseball announced its fifth annual, round-robin collegiate tournament is relocating to Houston and utilizing a big league stadium for the first time. The Astros' MLB Urban Youth Academy at Sylvester Turner Park will be the primary site on Feb. 17 and 19, while the games on Saturday, Feb. 18, will be played at Minute Maid Park. Cador's Southern club is back for the fifth year in a row, along with four other HBCUs: Alabama State (Montgomery, Ala.), Grambling State (Grambling, La.), Prairie View A&M University (Prairie View, Texas) and local representative Texas Southern. They each participate along with UC-Irvine, an NCAA Division I school. MLB and the Astros will host a college fair at Minute Maid Park starting at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 18, as part of the weekend's activities. More than 20 colleges and universities will be represented and will provide information about college preparation, undergraduate and graduate degree programs, financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Greg Amsinger will provide play-by-play and Harold Reynolds will be the analyst in the booth for two of the Saturday games at Minute Maid Park, starting at 3 p.m. CT on MLB Network and simulcast on MLB.com. Children 12 and under, and any student 18 and under with a valid student ID, will be admitted free.
