About Laguna Phuket Laguna Phuket occupies a 400-hectare former abandoned tin mining site and three kilometers of natural beach fronting the Andaman Sea. The land had previously been described as a “moonscape” and an area resembling a “war zone” . A 1977 United Nations survey of the tourism potential on Phuket had written off the 400-hectare site as too environmentally damaged to have any development potential. The soil, the report said, was so leached by chemicals used in the mining process and by marine clays, that it “would never sustain vegetation again” . Another survey, 10 years later, by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, reached pretty much the same conclusion.

Laguna Phuket occupies a 400-hectare former abandoned tin mining site and three kilometers of natural beach fronting the Andaman Sea. The first step in restoring the area was to truck in enormous quantities of unspoiled soil and topsoil to re-contour and replant the land. Indigenous plant species that could thrive with little use of pesticides and herbicides were brought in. Fruit and flowering trees were planted to help attract wildlife back to the area. Trees, shrubs and grasses, which do not require much water, were a high priority as Phuket, like much of Thailand, suffers from terrible water shortage.

Today, you have the sense of having stumbled upon a hidden world, an exotic hideaway within what is already the tropical island retreat of Phuket. A road lined with casuarinas trees and palms open up to green expanses, fields of yellow Allamanda blossoms and lofty coconut trees lie against a backdrop of wooded hills, freshwater lagoons and the bright blue waters of Bang Tao Bay beyond. The resort is unique in its design as an “Integrated resort” in which nine major hotels, serve clearly defined and very different market segments. Laguna’s unique integrated concept offers: • Free use of inter-resort transportation via shuttle buses and lagoon boats • Choice of over 30 restaurants and bars • One centralized billing system allowing signing privileges at all hotels • Access to a wide spectrum of sports and recreational facilities which can be utilized by purchasing a day pass at participating hotels • Environmental conservation through shared ancillary services such as laundry, water treatment and maintenance.

Batam Centre Batam Centre as the name suggests, Batam Center is the hub of commerce and government for Batam. Located here are the central office of Industrial Development Authority (BIDA) and Immigration Office. This area prides itself in the many picturesque houses being built in residential sites. Further developments planned for the area include shopping centers and malls, commercial and office complexes.

Kabil

Barelang Islands consists of 6 islands south of Batam. Barelang gets its name as an acronym from 3 of the island’s names - Batam, Rempang & Galang. Bridge construction started in 1992 and took several years to complete as there were no roads on the islands or any other infrastructure. During construction a main road was built that runs down through the center of each island, with roads branching off to various locations. It is about a 40 min trip from the 1st bridge to the end of the last island, The bridges have been named after rulers of the Melayu & Riau Kingdoms that ruled during the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. It is a very popular place for locals & tourists, as the bridge is almost 40 meters above the water and provides spectacular ocean & island views.

Beaches

Batam is not known for picturesque beaches and the best ones are owned by resorts. Still, Melur is one of the last few non-monopolised beaches pretty enough for a seaside stopover. Facilities are spartan but there are local shacks selling drinks. Pack your own picnic mat and beach stools if you are into soaking up the sun.

From nearby Telaga Punggur you can go by boat to neighboring Pulau Bintan, in Kabil fishing village you can also find several seafood restaurants, and watch the passing sampans and fishing craft while you eat.

The Waterfront City is a resort area on the west coast of Batam, south of Sekupang, that mostly attracts Singaporean visitors. Some of the activities here are water sports, bungee-jumping, indoor skiing or simply checking out the nightclubs.

individual character and charm. From fun beaches that offer a wide range of water activities to suit different age

Take note when shopping especially when purchasing gem and jewellery. * Shop and compare prices. You never know if the neighbouring shops might offer the same product at a lower price. * Obtain receipts for purchases and check if product is in good condition and is the correct product in your shopping bags before leaving the shop. Shops usually do not allow exchanges after you leave their premises. * Do not follow a tout or allow new friend you found there to take you shopping. Stores give commission to these people, and you tend to pay extra for the product you purchase as the commission is included in the total price of the product. *Do not believe any claims by shop owners that purchases can be refunded at Thai embassies, consulates or other government offices overseas. These places do not practise such. * In general, reputable shops will give a written agreement to a full or partial refund on any goods returned within 90 days. Here are some shopping items to bargain for your loved ones at home: Ceramics, Antiques, Clothing, Silk, Furniture, Gems, Pewter Thai Orchids, Cotton & Batik, Jewellery, Textiles, Traditional handicrafts.

Magic Corner: The magic will start here. Magical touch will dazzle your trip and you will be caught in the sensation. The magic will enchant you so that you will be convinced that it is true. The only place that is full of exciting and magical adventure.

How to go about…?? ANGKOT

Enjoy the unique experience once you decide to take a ride in one of Bandung’s most common transportation, the Angkot. This is the cheapest public transportation you can get in Indonesia. Do not expect five-star service or convenience when you choose this but expect the exciting local experience! Angkot (pronounced as ‘un-caught’) in Bandung comes in different colours. It is a public transport minivan, with single entry and exit door on the left or at the back. This transport has a long seat and short seat, facing sideways and each other. The long one, decent enough for the Asian physique, can accommodate seven persons, while the other one accommodates five persons. There is no fixed fare as it depends on how far you wish to travel. On the average, cost will be less than a dollar. It is best to ask the driver or kernet (the assistant driver) about the fare to go to your destination. Hail an Angkot as you would a taxi. NOTE! Most important is to know is how to say, ‘KIRI’, in Bahasa Indonesia means ‘left’ or ‘stop here’. Why ‘left’? In Indonesia, the traffic drives on the left. So “Kiri” is an indication that you wish to stop here or the Angkot will pass your destination.

TAXI: The best choice for you to travel around Bandung. Official taxis in Bandung use meters but stay clear of an unmetered Taxi. Blue Bird is the best known and reliable taxi service throughout the years. CAR: Renting a car is the easiest and the most convenient way to explore Bandung. There are many reliable local car rentals that you can find in Bandung. Check at the airport / hotels for recommended Car Rentals Company.

TO BANDUNG BY: Air:

• Direct flights by SilkAir, Garuda and Air Asia made available daily from Singapore to Bandung. *FROM Bandung Airport: 4 km to town. Taxis from the airport to town are convenient.

Land–Train:
