Intro Dear nature lovers, Herbs can do immeasurably more than simply adding flavor and color to your favorite dishes; their remedial powers are truly impressive. Traditional cures from herbs have been used by herbalists and apothecaries in every culture around the world, from the Greeks to the Celts, the Romans to the Arabs, and the Chinese to the Indians. ...And as my grandmother used to say, every disease has an herb to cure it. Inspired by her words and the healing powers of nature, we put our heads together and made this healing herbarium for you in hopes that we can entice you to bring more nature into your body and mind and help you cope better with life’s adversities. Did you know that people spend up to 10 hours a day in front of a screen nowadays? And are you aware that our addiction to such consumption is so strong that it keeps us from getting outdoors, costing us our health and possibly our life? Conversely, people who live closer to green space have fewer health complaints and live longer because the green space itself is a great buffer against stress. We are certain that some of the herbs present in our healing herbarium are known to you as they may have overtaken your garden and you find it hard to get rid of them, but make no mistake! Herbs like chamomile, dandelion or daisy are packed with vitamins, minerals, and culinary and medicinal value - offering a myriad of uses! Some herbs contain invisible chemicals which can reduce stress hormones and lower anxiety, while others possess potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, or improve your blood pressure and boost immunity. Apart from listing the health benefits of herbs, our healing herbarium will provide you with useful tips on how to prepare, preserve, and store herbs to make the most of them. 8

“We are what we eat. We don’t doubt that fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts contain a range of vitamins, minerals and cancer-fighting properties, yet the nutrient content and medicinal properties of herbs are often overlooked.” The UK’s leading organic herb grower Jekka McVicar.

Welcome to “My Herbs School The use of herbal remedies, preparations and food supplements has become a common form of professional herbal treatment known as phytotherapy. Phytotherapy is a time-proven and science-based medical practice, which uses plant-derived medications in the treatment and prevention of diseases. To ensure the treatment is successful you need to know some basic rules.

A

lways pick herbs in dry weather spells. The right time to harvest is different for different herbs, however, these days when we are all pressed for time these conditions are rarely met - people probably assume that something is better than nothing. Anyway, the

12

best time to harvest herbs containing volatile essential oils (St. John’s wort, creeping thyme, etc.) is on an early or late summer morning after the dew has dried when their essential oil content is at its peak. During the heat of a summer afternoon some of those oils evaporate.

Herbs grown for their flowers or flowering stems should be harvested just before full bloom. Store them in sealed paper bags, or natural fiber containers such as jute herb bags. Woven baskets or net bags are also suitable and work perfectly as long as they are airtight and protect from light and heat. And there is one more important rule: some herbs selectively absorb or accumulate undesirable compounds, like heavy metals, from contaminated soil or air. Therefore, herbs should only be harvested in (relatively) clean natural areas and always at least 500 ft or 150 m away from busy roads.

On the other hand, nettles should be harvested in the afternoon peak sun-hours. Nettles are known for their increased ability to accumulate nitrate ions whose levels lower during the day because of sunlight. Nettles contain larger amounts of this undesirable substance in the early morning hours and smaller in the afternoon. It is worth mentioning that nettles (Urtica dioica and Urtica urens) possess most abundant medicinal properties when harvested in the springtime, by the end of May. Nettles from later harvest can also be used in phytotherapy, but they are not so effective.

HERBAL TEAS Drinking a tea brewed from freshly gathered herbs is an easy way to get nature’s healing force into your body – something we all need, whether we are healthy or fighting illness. Fresh or dried plants help strengthen the immune system and detoxify. They are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, essential oils, soluble fiber, minerals, enzymes, chlorophyll, and numerous compounds to boost our health.

Herbs grown for flowers retain their medicinal potency for 1-2 years (e.g. mullein) Herbs grown for stalks and leaves containing essential oils retain their medicinal potency for about 2 years (e.g. basil) Herbs grown for stalks and leaves, which do not contain essential oils, retain their medicinal potency for about 3 years (e.g. nettle)

Herbal teas can be prepared in different ways, usually as infusions or by maceration. To avoid confusion between teas, which are made from the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), and herbal teas, alternate terms have been used, such as herbal infusions or tisanes. The term herbal tea therefore refers to infusions not made from Camellia sinensis, which come from soaking various flowers, leaves, or spices in hot water. Most of these brews don’t have caffeine. They can come in a wide range of tastes and flavors and make a tempting alternative to sugary beverages or water. In addition to being delicious, some herbal teas have health-promoting properties. In fact, herbal teas have been used as natural remedies for a variety of ailments for hundreds of years.

Herbs grown for roots and bark can retain their potency for up to 5 years (e.g. oak bark, red sandalwood, horsetail, chickory root, couch grass rhizome

etc. depending on what kind of herbs you are using. The steeping time should be minimum 4 hours, but usually the maceration should sit overnight to be drunk in the morning, or sit all day to be drunk in the evening.

Herbal teas are easy to prepare. Just take a china or glass teapot (do not use a metal container), and put one teaspoon of the herb or mixture into it for every cup of tea that you intend to make. Next pour a cup of boiling water for every teaspoon of herb, put the lid on and let steep for 10-20 minutes depending on the type of herb. Herbal teas are usually made by steeping herb leaves for a fairly short period of time therefore the resulting drink is rather weak. If you want to make a true infusion to extract the most flavor and beneficial substances from the herb typically use roots, sprouts, flowers and leaves and let them steep for a considerably longer period of time, usually up to a few hours.

To prepare hot herbal tea by maceration let 3 tablespoons herb or herbs steep in 27 fl oz (800 ml) water overnight, then bring to a boil in the morning and strain. Pour the liquid into a vacuum bottle and drink a cup on an empty stomach in the morning and sip the rest during the day. TINCTURES Tinctures are liquid extracts made from herbs that you take orally. They are usually extracted in ethyl alcohol because it is a potent solvent. Some herbs will not release their medicinal qualities to a solvent that is less potent, such as water, apple cider vinegar ot vegetable gylcerine.

MACERATION Macerations are similar to infusions, except made with cold water instead of hot water. The reason for this is that some herbs, such as wild cherry bark and valerian root, are better infused in cold water. Macerations are also very easy to make, and can be used for a variety of things, such as sleeping aides, cough suppresants,

plant material and pour the liquid into small, labeled, glass bottles with dropper tops. The common ratio of finely chopped fresh herbs to ethyl alcohol stands at 3.5-4.5 oz (100-125 g) of fresh herbs to 17 fl oz (500 ml) of 60%-65% ethylalcohol. Ethylalcohol also acts as an effective preservative. Alcohol-based tinctures have a virtually unlimited shelf life if stored in a cool, dark location. Refrigeration is not necessary. The non-alcohol version of tincture is extracted in organic vegetable glycerine and distilled water. Although it may be tempting to make your own tinctures, some plant parts are considered toxic and may be harmful. In addition, certain plants may be contaminated by substances such as pesticides and heavy metals.

HONEY TINCTURE Honey tincture is made from a mixture of herbs, alcohol and honey. This combination ensures extraordinarily fast and effective absorption of medicinal compounds. Use preferably fresh herbs. Fill a mason jar 1/3 of the way full with finely chopped herbs. Pour 40% vodka over the herbs covering them completely with the alcohol, and keep pouring until the alcohol is 2 inches above the herbal material. Cover with an airtight lid and let sit in a warm place but not in direct sunlight for two weeks. Then open and stir 7 oz (200 g) honey into the content and shake well. The next day the tincture is ready to use. Unless otherwise prescribed take 1 teaspoon of the tincture 4

plants. Vinegar extracts the medicinal constituents of herbs, yet also carries many healing properties of its own., e.g. vinegar tonifies, cleanses and cools the skin, improves digestion and metabolic functioning or moderates high blood pressure.

times a day. Strain through a stainless or plastic sieve, ideally with a glass spoon. Then pour about 4 fl oz (125 ml) distilled or boiled water over the pomace, stir it and drink on an empty stomach. EXTRACTS

Medicinal herbal vinegars can be prepared by macerating herbal material in table wine, red or white, usually in a 1:10 to1:12 ratio, and adding 3 tablespoons of wild yeast vinegar or vinegar of your choice (champagne, raw apple cider...). The wine soon starts to acetify. Fill one-pint jar 2/3 with the macerated herbal material and cover it with room temperature apple cider vinegar. Cap the jar with a plastic lid or put a plastic bag between the metal lid and jar so that the vinegar will not corrode the metal. Let sit for minimum 5-6 weeks, the longer it sits the more flavor and herbal absorptionis made by the vinegar , and shake occasionally. Strain or keep herbal material in and use it on your food.

Herbal extracts are preparations containing plant produced compounds (phytochemicals), which possess medicinal properties, in concentrated form. Extracts may be prepared by allowing tincture to evaporate in a vacuum if possible – which indicates that this method is not suitable for making extracts at home. A liquid extract is obtained by letting the orginal tincture ratio of 1:5 (1 part herb, 5 parts ethyl alcohol) evaporate to 1:1. By further evaporation up to honey-thick consistency you will get a thick extract. Complete evaporation results into in a small amount of extract powder. MEDICINAL WINES There are two common methods to make medicinal wines: wine concoctions (less often infusions) or wine macerations. Concoctions are intended for immediate consumption and are therefore prepared in small amounts while macerations are intended for gradual consumption. Macerations may last minimum four months when stored in full sealed bottles and even much longer when stored in a cool place. Once the bottle has been opened the content should be used within three weeks. If the maceration is to be consumed in small amounts it is advisable to pour it into small bottles and keep the bottles full and sealed. To prepare medicinal wines use the same method as to prepare herbal teas. Wine concoctions (infusions) have a much stronger effect than water infusions like teas. It is therefore advised to use a little fewer herbs than when you make a tea, or dilute the wine with a little water, or shorten the infusion time. Medicinal wines in general should be served in small amounts, usually in tablespoonfuls. As to wine macerations the most suitable concentration seems to be 2.5 oz (75 g) herb to 34 fl oz (1 l) wine. To make white wine macerations use Rhine or Italian Riesling and to make red wine macerations Cabernet or Merlot is recommended.

HERBAL JUICES Many herbs can be juiced, especially plants that contain a large amount of water and those that have water soluble medicinal compounds work best. To make a tasty herbal juice use a high-quality (not centrifugal) juicer, or a horizontal juicer to grind herbs. Herbal juices can be preserved for later use by thermal processing or sterilization, but it is obviously better to consume them fresh. In summer they can last minimum 2-3 days in the fridge, in other seasons about a day longer. Juices made from herbs which are not fleshy should be taken in teaspoons or tablespoons once or twice a day. Juices from fleshy herbs, fruits or vegetables can be consumed several times a day, however moderation is advised because of the amount of sugar the apparently healthy drinks contain. Juicing releases the sugars in fruit and removes the insoluble fibre, which is important for our health. Therefore, you will be better off making your own juice so you can control what goes into it, and limit their intake to a couple of glasses a week as a ‚nutritional top-up“. If you cannot consume juices for whateever reason try vegetable stocks instead and preferably serve them fresh. HERBAL OINTMENTS They are also very easy to make, they last for months and don’t contain any of those harmful chemicals you would normally find in the store bought creams and

16

MEDICINAL OILS A popular method of preparing medicinal herbal oils is to dissolve essential oils in carrier oils. Carrier oils, such as natural vegetable oils, are used to dilute essential and other oils prior to topical application because if applied to the skin undiluted, essential oils can cause severe irritation, burning or other reactions in some individuals. Another method is purely natural: for one part of herbal material (ideally, fresh crushed herbs) you will need 7-8 parts of carrier oil. Put all parts together into an open container and heat in a water bath for about 30 minutes. Remove the container, cover with a lid and let sit in room temperature for about five days and then filter.

HERBAL SYRUPS Herbal syrups offer powerful and concentrated medicine and nutrition. There are more ways to make them, but remember you will always need a lot of sweetener to make the syrup taste well and last long. No-heat herb and sugar syrup: You can make delightful, fragrant syrups by packing a layer of fresh herbs into a clean jar and pouring white sugar over it. Then put another layer of herbs on top of the sugar, and repeat several times until the jar is full. Then seal and place the jar in a warm place for about one month to get a tasty natural herbal syrup. Herb infused simple syrup: Carefully rinse your herb or a mixture of herbs. Bring a cup of water to a boil. Add a cup of white sugar and whisk into the boiling water until the sugar is dissolved. Add herb of choice to the syrup and let boil for 60 seconds. Remove from heat and let the herbs steep for about 30 minutes as the syrup cools. Pour the cooled syrup through a fine strainer into a glass bottle or jar. Store in the fridge and add to your favorite drinks in teaspoons for a sophisticated herbal essence.

ointments. Ointments are similar to creams, but unlike a cream that quickly absorbs into the skin, ointment forms a protective layer over the skin as they do not contain water, just oils or fats. Herbal ointments can be prepared from dried herbs or tincture by slowly stirring drops of heated tincture or finely ground herb powder into a melted ointment base. Calendula flowers, for example, can be infused directly in the melted base. The consistency of an ointment can be adjusted by adding melted beeswax or resin. HERBAL COMPRESS AND POULTICE Herbal compresses are usually made by dipping a soft cloth into the herbal tea. Instead of cloth you can use washed and tenderized leaves, e.g. of kale. A herbal plaster is a kind of herbal paste made from fresh or dried herbs mixed with water or oil typically thickened with starch or flour, or clay. You can choose to put this paste on a cotton cloth and then directly against your skin, or you can put a cloth between your herbal paste and your skin as a kind of buffer as some herbs may be irritating to the skin.

HERBAL ENEMAS People have long used herbal enemas for a variety of health reasons. Some believe enemas are essential as a routine bowel cleaning measure, while others believe they can help with removing toxins from the body. The effect of enemas depends on the absorptive capacity of intestinal mucosa. Enemas are recommended for bowel disease, or when patients reject oral medication. First, take a cleansing enema. Infuse 50 fl oz or 1.5 l of boiled, filtered and slightly salted water of body temperature into your colon to stimulate peristaltis throughout the full length of the colon. Once enough water is in the colon, you then expel it, along with the resulting waste into the toilet. Only then perform the medicinal herbal enema . Herbal enema recipes are simply enemas where water is infused with herbal remedies. However, you need much less water, between 5-7 fl oz or 150-200 ml, as you do not need to stimulate peristaltis this time, but you want the herbal tea to remain in the bowels and heal. As regular enemas somewhat irritate the intestinal mucosa, so-called micro-enemas are sometimes more advisable. Spray 4 fl oz or 125 ml of healthy herbal tea into the bowels (right after the bowel movement) with no need to induce further cleansing. Micro-enemas have a gentler effect than traditional enemas, which makes them more suitable for repeated use.

HERBAL BATHS When choosing to take a hot bath, make sure to include healing herbs. But remember, never immerse yourself in extremely hot bath water and always end your hot bath with a short cold shower to prevent developing a disease. Herbal baths combine the beneficial effects of herbs, water and heat and are recommended to be taken twice or three times a week. The bath water temperature should be just a degree or two higher than normal body temperature. The average time spent in the bath ranges from 10 to 20 minutes, but should not exceed 35 minutes. A comprehensive spa treatment generally includes 12 baths followed by a few days break and then 4 more baths to complete the treatment. However, partial baths, such as hand or feet or lower back baths, have an unexpectedly comprehensive effect as well and are not as exhaustive as complete baths. For a partial bath use 3-5 teaspoons of herbal mixture, and 8-15 teaspoonful for a complete bath. Unless a decoction is explicitly prescribed infuse herbs in hot water (from 16-50 fl oz or 0.5 -1.5 l) and let cool off. Then strain and add to the pleasantly warm bath. Watch out, repeated complete bath may sometimes result in temporary worsening of symptoms. An overly strong or recurring reaction to hot baths may indicate the necessity to suspend the treatment. Consult your balneologist.

18

HERBAL INHALATIONS Herbal inhalations are split into wet types (when we inhale vapors of boiling herbs such as chamomile, juniper or mint through linen) and dry ones – which border on aromatherapy, and in which we inhale compounds finely spread in the air, or when we inhale the natural air of a forest or meadow. The advantage of inhalations is that they come into effect very quickly – essentially as fast as when using preparations intravenously. HERBAL POWDERS Herbal powders are wonderful daily remedies. They can be added to juices, smoothies, honey or milk for internal use, or mixed with oils, water or honey for external application. Topically, they can be used to quickly create a compress. Mix the finely ground herbs with a little water, oil or honey to make a paste and rub it on the affected body part and cover with a cloth. Store sealed airtight in a cold dry place. Internally, take one teaspoon after a meal and wash down with a glass of water or tea.

Drying Herbs While the herbs from your garden are best when used freshly picked, there is always more than you can use in one season. Air drying is not only the easiest and least expensive way, but this slow drying process can help retain the essential oils of the herbs, so they don’t lose all their flavor. The ideal temperature for drying herbs ranges from 95°- 104° F or 35°- 40° C. If this temperature would be difficult to ensure, dry the herbs in a shaded well ventilated place. Harvest herbs for drying just before their flowers open. As for the time of the day , generally it is best to harvest herbs early morning after the dew has evaporated but before the sun has evaporated the volatile oils contained in them. Rinse them with lukewarm water, pat them dry with paper towels, remove any dry or diseased leaves. Hang or lay the herbs out where they will get plenty of air circulation, so they can dry out quickly. Wet herbs will mold and rot. Tie them into a bundle with a rubber band. Keep the leaves and flowers facing downward and hang somewhere in a spot that gets full sun, e.g. on the porch or off a hanger or a drying rack. Another common way is to lay them out on the floor with a thin white paper underneath, but it is also the slowest method, which may result in a poor condition of the herb at the end of the process. The drying process may last up to several days depending on the type of herb and the thickness of the layer. Herbs can also be dried in an oven or microwave, which is a much quicker method than air-drying, though you will have to be careful not to burn the herbs, and you may have to experiment with your oven to find the ideal technique. Once you have dried your herbs, they are ready to use right away, but more often you will want to store the herbs for later. Crumble the dried herbs with clean fingers or crush them in a mortar, discarding any hard stems. Then place the crushed herbs into small airtight containers and keep in a cool, dark place. They may last for 6 to 12 twleve months, but the sooner you use them, the more flavor you will have. 20

Seven Best Healing and Disease-Fighting Herbs

Common Sage (Salvia officinalis) Calms a sore throat

I

t is not just an herb, it is the ‘savior’ herb as its healing effects in many ways outperform conventional medicines. The name ‘salvia’ comes from Latin ‘salvere’ which means ‘to be saved’. Sage is a perennial herb with a long history. It has been used since ancient times for warding off evil, snakebites, and increasing women‘s fertility. The Romans, who gave salvia its current name, used it as a diuretic, a local anesthetic for the skin, a styptic, and a popular spice.

Salvia is cultivated either as a medicinal herb or for its aromatic substances as a spice. Traditionally leaves or stalks without their bottom woody parts are used for therapeutic purposes. The leaves have a pleasantly aromatic, distinctive to bitterish taste, which when sage is used in larger amounts, tends to be somewhat astringent. Sage contains plenty of essential oils represented mainly by camphor. Along with other essential oils such as thujone or cineole, it chiefly contributes to the anti-inflammatory activity of sage infusions.

OCCURRENCE Sage is native to the Mediterranean region, where it grows on sunny limestone slopes and rocks, and in colluvium and rock debris. It grows in Spain, Italy, and France, as well as on the Balkan peninsula, where it has been cultivated as a medicinal herb since the ninth century. Nowadays, you can easily grow it in your garden or at home since you can buy it at horticulture centers or supermarkets almost anywhere in the world.

A VALUABLE REMEDIAL HERB Folk healers are very fond of using the medicinal substances of sage. There is a wide range of uses for sage. As mentioned before, sage possesses properties of an ideal anti-inflammatory agent and disinfectant. It also has spasmolytic and astringent effects. It supports expectoration. So, how can we use it effectively?

DESCRIPTION

Sage can be used both externally and internally for inflammation or injuries. It can be used as a disinfectant for lavage. A sage decoction or essential oil is often added to baths. If you use essential oil you first have to dissolve it in fat. Ideally, whole milk or cream is recommended for this purpose. Dissolve 15 drops of sage essential oil in it and then pour the mixture into the bath. Relax with a nice soak for at least 25 minutes. In the meantime, the sage will take care of all your skin problems. It will heal and disinfect all minor injuries, insect bites, bruises or foot fungal infections. Sage is also an excellent herb for a sore throat. Just make a strong sage tea by pouring a cup of almost boiling water over 2 tablespoons of fresh or 1 tablespoon of dried sage leaves. Cover and steep for 10-15 minutes and strain. Add honey or lemon, if

Salvia, a member of the mint family Lamiaceae, is a woody perennial growing 60 cm (2 feet) tall, which bears aromatic leaves that are the source of the culinary herb. The stalks branch off right above the ground, and are typically angled like other members in Lamiaceae. They grow quite tall and branch out. It is therefore necessary to pinch them off periodically. Sage leaves have a strong scent. They are oblong, gray-green, rugose on the upper side, and nearly white underneath due to their many short soft hairs. Although sage provides leaves over winter, small plants should be potted and taken indoors. Salvia officinalis produces racemes of purple labiate flowers from May to July. The perennials carry brown schizocarps with four nutlets.

* ANTI-FUNGAL QUALITIES

desired. Sage tea may also be used as a throat gargle. Just be careful and do not use sage tea during pregnancy and lactation without first seeking advice from a knowledgeable healthcare service provider. Thanks to its disinfecting and anti-inflammatory effects, sage also perfectly cleans the oral cavity. Fresh sage leaves can be laid directly on wounds, which will then heal better and faster.

Sage is often recommended as a means to inhibit both external and internal fungal infections. Add some sage essential oil or a sage infusion to your bath or make a poultice to treat dermatitis, Athlete’s foot or dysentery. Due to the camphene and camphor contained in sage essential oil, it offers great antifungal qualities and helps relieve dozens of health conditions. It is no wonder that sage is used in thousands of skin care products.

* CLEANSING If you suffer from digestive problems, you may want to give sage a chance. A regular cup of sage tea can easily rid you of diarrhea or even prevent it. It also helps ease stomach pain and prevents and heal stomach ulcers. At the same time it can help take care of your intestines. Make 1.5 to 2 liters of a sage and chamomile infusion by adding one tablespoon of sage and one tablespoon of chamomile to hot water and boil for about three minutes. Then use the infusion to carry out a cleansing enema. Enemas have been reported to kill candida albicans overgrowth, destroy and remove cancer cells, stop bleeding, regulate and balance intestinal flora by removing toxic metals and help strengthen the muscles of the colon to promote normal bowel movements. The sage-chamomile decoction sterilizes and cleanses all wounds on the intestinal wall, treats polyps and cleanses the bowels of unwanted parasites.

* ANTIVIRAL QUALITIES If you catch a cold, have a cough, the flu or tonsillitis, then be sure to have salvia officinalis at hand. It can encourage your body to fight against unwanted invaders, shorten the course of the illness to minimum and alleviate its symptoms. * FOR GOOD DIGESTION The vast array of culinary uses, coupled with its undeniable medicinal impact, makes sage very valuable for human health. Modern research has discovered that the impact of sage on the human body can be considerable, which is why it is widely exported around the world and makes its way into recipes far and wide. Typically, it is added to savory dishes due to its peppery flavor and is a key ingredient in many meals and meat-based dishes. Our ancestors knew very well why they were using it; sage enhances our digestive health by stimulating the gall bladder function and helping against flatulence. It is also a well-known accelerator for treating gastritis, enteritis and food poisoning.

* ANTI-INFLAMMATORY QUALITIES As well as your skin, throat and bowels, sage – thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties – is also useful for treating your oral cavity. Sage can help treat gum inflammations, mouth ulcers like aphthae, gingivitis, tooth decay or bad breath. That is why it has become a common ingredient of both toothpaste and chewing gum. In addition, sage is a great remedy for denture sores. If painful cold sores or blisters appear on your lip or inside your nose, apply a sage poultice or just rub a fresh sage leaf between your fingers and press it on the affected area.

Our tips: Sage syrup

Sage honey

Ingredients: 300 g (10.5 oz) of dark cane sugar 300 ml (10 fl oz) of water 15 g (0.5 oz) of fresh sage petals

Ingredients: A jar of honey A handful of crushed fresh sage leaves

Preparation: Mix the sugar thoroughly in the water so that it dissolves and place over heat. Simmer for fifteen minutes and then set the pot aside and add the sage. Let it steep, stirring occasionally for about a half an hour. Beware – the water should not be brought to a boil! Then pour the syrup into a glass bottle, screw the cap and shake thoroughly to mix the contents. It is necessary to store the bottle in the fridge after opening.

Preparation: Steam honey slowly until it becomes liquid. Meanwhile, crush fresh sage leaves. Then add them to the warm honey and stir. Pour into small jars and let them stand in a warm place, e.g. on a window sill, for about a week. When the sage honey is ready to use, you can eat it either on its own, added to your tea, or to flavor your dishes.

Seven Best Healing and Disease-Fighting Herbs

Comfrey

(Symphytum officinale) For bone pain

T

his demonized plant also known as black root or bruisewort is an amazing healing agent, while at the same time it has been on Australia’s Poison Advisory List since 1984 and has been banned in the USA for internal use in supplements since 2002 as it contains toxic alkaloids and cannot be ingested. However, the curative properties of this controversial herb are indisputable. Comfrey is a branched perennial growing from a thick, fleshy, brown-skinned root system. Tall and wide spreading it, reaches a height of 35 to 55 inches (90 to 140 cm). The whole plant is covered with short hairs and has a rough feel when touched. Comfrey is a less demanding plant native to Europe, growing in damp, grassy places like river banks, ditches or mountain foothills. It thrives in partial shade and in alkaline, clay-rich loamy soil full of nutrients. CONTENTS The plant is odorless but has a slightly sweet taste. The cross section must be white. Sometimes the fresh root is used. Apart from the toxic alkaloids it contains non-toxic elements, and minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorus and vitamins A, C and B12. One of its essential components is allantoin, a natural compound known for its moisturizing and softening properties. COMFREY, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? Allantoin, which is contained in comfrey roots and leaves, is a substance that helps new skin cells grow.

root is very useful in diarrhea, digestive disorders, and cleanses the kidneys.

Applied as a wash, poultice or ointment, comfrey roots or leaves heal wounds, ulcers, bruises, swollen glands, and stop bleeding or ease pain. Comfrey ointment treats scalds, burns and sunburn. Used internally, it helps with coughs, bronchitis, chest pain, stomach ulcers, stomach cramps and duodenal ulcers. Comfrey

In the past comfrey was used as a substitute for gypsum. The roots were cooked in water for a long time until they softened. Then bandages were put into the liquid and left to soak to be later wrapped around the broken limb. The mass hardened and the limb was firmly fixed.

WHAT TO COLLECT?

If, again, grated comfrey is mixed with a grated raw potato you get a great natural remedy for sore throats.

Collect the root by digging it out with a garden fork either in spring – before the vegetative stage begins – or in September or October. Quickly wash it, cut into halves and let it dry in the sun or inside at a temperature that should not exceed 113° F (45° C) You can also store it in sand like horseradish or carrots. Sometimes the leaves are also used for healing wounds and broken bones. They are large, oblong and hairy. Fresh comfrey tops are to be collected slightly before and during the blossoming period. Comfrey flowers blossoming from June to September are small and bell-shaped, and are of different colors, typically cream or purplish, and may be striped.

Ointment Add 2 handfuls of cleaned sliced roots (may also be leaves) to 1 lbs (½ kg) of lard and fry for 10 minutes. The next day warm the ointment gently, strain through a Tammy cloth and pour into tubs. Burn ointment Fill a glass jar with 5 tablespoons of crushed comfrey and 10 tablespoons of St. John’s wort and cover with 17 fl oz (1/2 l) of olive oil or other quality oil. Then screw the cap on the jar and store for two weeks before using.

WARNING

Tincture

Comfrey is a good servant, but a bad master. As mentioned above, it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can be harmful to the liver. Long-term use of comfrey or high doses can do damage - especially to people who already have a compromised liver – so it is not advised to use comfrey for long internally. The herb should not be taken for more than 10 days in a row. So, if you are only going to use it in the short term, it will certainly benefit you. But, if you have a more serious problem which requires longer treatment, you should consult your practitioner or a herbal specialist.

Fill a glass jar with a tight cover with cleaned and sliced comfrey root and pour 40% plum brandy or vodka over it. Screw the cap on the jar firmly and let it stand for 10 to 14 days in the sun or close to the heating. Shake occasionally. In 14 days pour the black fluid into vials. If possible, let the tincture stand for at least two years, since then it is even more effective and viscous. Bath additive Macerate 1 lbs (500 g) of fresh or dried comfrey leaves in 17 fl oz (5 l) of cold water. The next day bring the liquid to a boil and pour it into the bathtub. Comfrey wine

COMFREY PHARMACY

Steep 2 to 5 fresh washed and finely chopped roots in a liter of natural white wine for 5 to 6 weeks. Comfrey wine is a great remedy and prevention of respiratory diseases.

Periodontal or gum disease You can rinse your mouth with a comfrey decoction. Chewing the root quenches thirst.

Stomach tea

Poultice

Infuse 1 teaspoon of comfrey tea in 8.4 fl oz (1/4 l) of hot water and let it stand for 3 minutes. The most common benefit associated with drinking this tea is helping the digestive system to function better. It is said to help control both diarrhea and constipation, and soothe general indigestion. There is also a claim that it may help you deal with stomach and intestinal ulcers. Drink slowly and have three to four cups a day.

Cook 2 tablespoons of dried crushed root in 17 fl oz (½ l) of water for 15 minutes. Then let it infuse for another 15 minutes, sieve and and use to prepare the poultice. Similarly, you can mix grated comfrey with curd and honey to make a compress to ease abdominal pain or symptoms of bronchial infection.

Seven Best Healing and Disease-Fighting Herbs

Common Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

For spring cleansing and a healthy liver

T

he common dandelion is a flowering herbaceous perennial plant of the family Asteraceae. Dandelions are well-known, robust weeds; the common name derives from the French ‘dent de lion’, meaning ‘lion’s tooth’, which refers to the deeply toothed, dark green leaves, which are arranged in rosettes. The stems usually grow up to 10 cm tall (4 in), but sometimes up to over half a meter (20 in). The taproot is fusiform and milky with smaller roots branching off the taproot. A rosette of basal leaves grows from the bottom of the plant. The basal leaves are broader towards their outer tips than at the base (oblanceolate) in outline, although they are more or less lobbed along their length. Smooth hollow stems on which bright yellow flower heads are borne grow from the center of the leaf rosette. The bright yellow flower head (open in the daytime but closed at night) is borne

singly on the hollow stem, which rises 1.5-4 in (4-30 cm) above the leaves and exudes a milky sap (latex) when broken. The sap leaves behind dark spots when touched that may stay for several days on your hands and can barely be removed from your clothes. The rosette may produce several flowering stems at a time. The flower head is 1 to 2 in (2-5 cm) in diameter and is limited entirely to ray florets, no disc florets. Dandelions bloom from early spring until June and then again in autumn. The flower matures into a globe of fine filaments that are usually distributed by wind, carrying away the seed-containing achenes. These downy seed heads are familiar to children as dandelion clocks, which are used to ‘tell the time’ by the number of blows taken to remove the seeds.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF DANDELION From the point of view of its chemical composition dandelion is literally a cocktail of beneficial, medicinal and active substances. There is an abundance of vitamins - especially A, B2, C and D. Along with that, there are a plethora of minerals and other substances hidden in this tiny plant. They include tannins, fructose, phytosterols, insulin, slime, amino acids, sodium, potassium, manganese, sulfur, silicic acid, L-ascorbic acid and phosphorus. Dandelion also contains bitter substances like taraxin, taraxasterin and lactapturin. However, the content of some substances fluctuates depending on the season. For example, in the fall, inulin content is highest, while taraxin gains strength over the summer months - in July and August.

ROOT (Radix taraxaci) When used for culinary purposes, the best time to harvest dandelion roots is before the plants blossom, i.e. in early spring (March - April), or fall (September - October) when harvesting for medicinal purposes. Choose the largest and most vigorous plants, leaving smaller dandelions alone. Not only do these have small roots, but they are excellent food for bees, beetles and birds. Release the root from the ground using a garden fork. Be careful not to break or damage the root as the medicinal properties lie within the precious sap housed in these tough tubers. Gently shake the root to remove extra soil and wash thoroughly. Scrub roots well before cutting. Slice thick roots lengthwise into strips and apply artificial heat to dry them, making sure the temperature does not exceed 122°F (50°C). If dried correctly, the outer flesh of the dandelion root should have a dark color while the inner flesh should be creamy white and easy to break. The roots should not be smelly and should have a bitterish taste. If not dried properly, the roots will go mouldy. Wrap the dried roots in hard paper and keep in a dry and dark place.

31

The root is especially suitable for the treatment of constipation, digestive problems and heartburn. It is also suitable to be used during pregnancy and as a support for childbirth. Tip: Dandelion tincture How to make it ? To make a tincture, place dandelion root in a jar and cover with 80 proof (40%) vodka. Cover tightly and allow to steep 4-6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and remove the plant material. Store in a dark glass bottle. Label and date. What is it good for? It supports the function of liver and gallbladder, and it also helps in improving digestion. It is advisable to take 1-2 teaspoons of dandelion tincture a day. Alternatively, a half to one teaspoon of dried root can be used. Dandelion coffee To get a delicious caffeine-free alternative to coffee grind the dried and roasted dandelion root finely and use it as any other coffee substitute, e.g. chicory. Just pour boiling water over 1 teaspoon of the powder to make a cup of a tasty hot drink.

Seven Best Healing and Disease-Fighting Herbs

LEAVES (Folium taraxaci) Dandelion leaves should ideally be harvested from May to September. The stalks are to be harvested in March and April. Dry the leaves in a thin layer of up to 1.5-2in (4-5cm) in a shady and ventilated place. Turn the leaves over several time while drying. If dried properly, the dandelions leaves should keep their fresh green color. If they darken, they cannot be used. Preserve the dried leaves the same way you preserve the roots, i.e. wrapped in paper or in paper bags. Store in a dry and dark place. The leaves help to relieve swelling, cleanse the liver and digestive tract, relieve heartburn symptoms and are also suitable in pregnancy and during childbirth.

FLOWERS (Flos taraxaci) Fresh dandelion flowers are not only tasty but very healing. They are especially treasured for their mild analgesic (pain-relieving) properties, making them an excellent addition to products designed for sore muscles or other external aches and pains. They’re also traditionally used in preparations to heal rough chapped skin. Patients suffering from liver diseases should eat at least five dandelion flowers a day, and patients with diabetes should eat even more. For optimal results, it is advisable to adhere to this treatment for at least a month, ideally throughout the flowering period. During the treatment, the swelling of the glands will go down and patients with metabolic disorders will feel better. The flow-

Tip: Leaves as a delicacy In the kitchen we ideally process fresh leaves that do not yet contain milk. They are a valuable source of vitamin C and taste great in fresh spring vegetable salads as well as in soup. When used to season soup, do not cook the leaves, but instead sprinkle the hot soup with finely chopped fresh leaves to add vitamins and minerals to the dish. Dandelion has 30 times more vitamin C and 25 times more magnesium than lettuce.

32

Tip: Dandelion vinegar Thoroughly wash 20 dandelion leaves, add 10 flowers and scrubbed dandelion root, then chop into medium-sized pieces. Stuff a jar with those pieces and pour in cold organic cider vinegar until the dandelions are covered. Shake well and leave in a cupboard for 12 days. Then strain through an unbleached coffee filter into clean, sterilized jars. Replace the old leaves and flowers with fresh ones and leave the liquid to stand in a sunny spot for a further 12 days. Then filter again, pour into a clean jar and add a few more fresh leaves. Dandelion vinegar cleanses the body, improves metabolic function, moderates hypertension, lowers cholesterol, prevents osteoporosis, improves bone health and supports healthy skin tone.

ers are also harvested to be used to make dandelion honey. Dandelion honey is actually dandelion syrup; we humans cannot even come close to making any type of honey that is similar to the honey bees’ honey. However, it does resemble honey in consistency and color, and shares with it some therapeutic benefits. In spring it cleanses our body of any toxins accumulated over winter, and throughout the year it is commonly consumed for its help with digestive and liver health, and also used for various skin concerns. Like all honeys, dandelion also boasts a good nutritional content, being a good source of vitamins, dietary minerals, enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants, natural sugars, pollen and other elements with nutritional value.

HEALTH EFFECTS Dandelion has held a unique place in herbal medicine since time immemorial. Ancient Greeks used dandelion milk against freckles and spots on the skin, or to treat eye inflammation, fatigue and weakness. Modern day herbalists and healers primarily use the healing properties of dandelion internally. So, where and how does it help? Herbalist Judith Berger calls dandelion: “A supportive plant in the deepest sense” And goes on to say that: “It is no accident that dandelion grows so abundantly in places which are heavily populated. Though we imagine that the cure for our ills are complicated, exotic, and expensive, often the plants which are meant to be our constant companions love to settle at our feet.” All parts of the plant are medicinal: root, stem, leaves, and flowers! This is a plant that will not give up on you. This is a plant that will stick it out with you, healing and nourishing deeply on multiple levels and across many organ systems to bring your vital life force bubbling to the surface.

activity and has a positive effect on blood circulation and blood cleansing. Bile duct Last, but not least, another health benefit of dandelion is that the bitter substances it contains stimulate the flow of bile into the duodenum and promote peristalsis in the bile duct. At the same time, they can very effectively dissolve small gallbladder stones. Liver Dandelion is one of the most effective natural remedies. For centuries, it has historically been used for liver complaints and cleansing. If the liver is damaged, dandelion can regenerate it. If you often drink alcohol, or if you regularly take medication, then dandelion should become a part of your daily diet. The leaves and root have a generally strong, detoxifying effect, while the root has a good cleansing effect on the liver. Because of these properties, dandelion is also suitable for diseases such as mononucleosis, jaundice and cirrhosis.

Spring fever You would struggle to find a better natural remedy for spring fever. It actually does not need to be looked for, since it is available so abundantly around us. Dandelion revives and activates metabolism. It dehydrates and detoxifies, and a dandelion tea or juice is perfect for a springtime makeover. The young leaves go very nicely in a salad or can be chopped and used as seasoning.

Constipation Dandelion is not only a suitable prevention of hemorrhoids, it can also directly treat constipation. Thanks to the substances it contains dandelion can stimulate bowel movement and thus facilitate the excretion of stools. Similar effects were observed in patients with delayed urinary excretion as well as kidney stones.

Digestive system

Diabetes

As we have already indicated, thanks to the high content of bitter substances, dandelion supports a healthy digestive tract and boosts appetite. Just drink a cup of dandelion tea or coffee every day. Regular consumption will help you gently cleanse the liver and prevent the accumulation of toxins from food in your body.

Dandelion offers a compelling profile of bioactive components with potential anti-diabetic properties. The anti-diabetic properties of dandelion are attributed to bioactive chemical components, such as chicoric acid, taraxasterol (TS), chlorogenic acid, and sesquiterpene lactones. Patients with type 2 diabetes should use this herb more often as it regulates the amount of blood sugar and might be a very helpful remedy for this disease. However, if you’re a diabetic and already on medication, talk to your doctor before taking dandelion in any form as it could affect blood glucose levels.

Blood circulation The bitter substances in dandelions do not only stimulate digestion but also aid the cardiovascular system. To be more precise, dandelion improves the heart’s

Obesity

Skin problems

Mainly due to its diuretic and laxative properties dandelion can promote weight loss. Dandelion speeds up the metabolism and, when this happens, you lose weight more easily. However, it is necessary to also adjust your diet and do more physical exercise to achieve this goal.

Use dandelion milk to effectively treat skin diseases caused by microbial and fungal infections. Dandelion sap or milk is highly alkaline in nature and exhibits potent germicidal, fungicidal and insecticidal properties. So, it can be used to treat itchiness, eczema, sunburn, insect bites, blisters, warts, athlete’s foot, ringworm, and other similar conditions without any side effects. All these problems can be tackled with natural dandelion milk. But be careful - if your skin is sensitive, first test the dandelion milk on a small patch of skin (for example on the forearm). In individuals with sensitive skin, this milk can cause a rash.

Pancreas Patients with pancreatic diseases should also consider taking natural dandelion products. Dandelion root extract is able to offer help where no other treatment has when it comes to one particular form of cancer: pancreatic cancer. Researchers from the University of Windsor in Ontario have evaluated the effectiveness of dandelion root extract in treating aggressive and resistant pancreatic cancer cells. What they found is very promising and inspires hope. As soon as the dandelion root extract was applied to cells, it induced apoptosis (cell death) in the pancreatic cancer cells and, the more extract was used, the more cancer cells died. The dandelion extract killed off the cancer cells in an ingenious way: it caused the collapse of mitochondrial membranes, making it impossible for the cancer cells to survive. What’s more, normal, healthy cells were completely immune to this effect. In any case, we do not say that you should discontinue taking the medications prescribed by your doctor. Just be aware that dandelion improves the function of the pancreas and is believed to be an effective treatment against pancreatic cancer cells.

Retention of fluids in the body If your system is flooded with too much water, then you should start to sip tea made from fresh dandelion leaves. Your body will then be perfectly drained and cleansed. However, compared to conventional diuretics, dandelion has the benefit of not carrying away valuable potassium from the body. It only helps tackle the problem of fluids, and without any undesirable effects.

Seven Best Healing and Disease-Fighting Herbs

Common Daisy (Bellis perennis) Wards off cough

B

ellis, the genus name, comes from the Latin bella, meaning beautiful. The common name of this herbaceous perrenial originates from the Anglo Saxon word meaning “day’s eye.” The name is appropriate since the flower opens in the morning. The common daisy is native to Europe and western Asia, but has now been naturalized in many parts of the globe. The common daisy, also known as the lawn daisy or English daisy (or historically, as bruisewort or woundwort), is small in size, usually not larger than 2 to 5 inches (5 to 10 centimeters). Like the dandelion, the common daisy belongs to the Asteraceae family. Its white flowers with a pinkish hue are symmetrical. Although it looks like a simple flower it is actually a composite of several different parts joining to form the flower. The common daisy generally blooms from early spring to midsummer, although when grown under ideal conditions, they have a very long flowering season and will even produce a few flowers in the middle of mild winters, sometimes under the snow - no wonder, since they are resistant to frost of up to 5°F (-15°C).

flower, i.e. from early spring until the end of summer. Dried flowers are used to make teas or decoctions. Ideally, the stem of the harvested plant should be up to 0.25 inches (2 cm) in length – only in such states do they contain the highest levels of active substances. Spring flowers are the most effective and the recommended collection time is noon.

COMMON DAISY AS A MEDICINAL HERB The common daisy contains essential oils, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, resins, minerals, vitamins (including vitamin C) and fiber, organic acids and inulin. It is known as a plant that can support bile excretion and, as such, digestion. The herb may be used to treat a loss of appetite as it has a stimulating effect on the digestive system – daisy tea is even recommended in treating anorexia – and has been used as a treatment for many ailments of the digestive tract, such as gastritis, diarrhea, liver and gallbladder complaints and mild constipation. You can also use it for abdominal pain from bad digestion. The common daisy is commonly found in tea blends that relieve coughs, as it dissolves mucous and cleanses the airways. It alleviates irritation and asthma cramps. By gargling with daisy infusion you can get rid of gum inflammation and sore throats. It also increases immunity, protects against free radicals and, as a result, works as cancer prevention.

The leaves are small, rounded or spoon-shaped, from 3/4 to 2 inches (approx. 2–5 cm) long and a little serrated. They grow flat to the ground and are arranged in ground rosettes. The common daisy is sometimes considered an invasive weed as it habitually colonizes lawns in gardens, fields and mountain meadows up to 6500 ft (2000 meters) above sea level, and is difficult to eradicate by mowing, hence the term “lawn daisy”. It is nevertheless a great herbal remedy. They fare best in full sun and typically, the plant is harvested while in

the spring. You can literally graze on it by eating up to ten fresh plants a day to improve the benefits of your spring detox treatment. The common daisy is also used to reduce swelling as it drains water from your body.

Diabetics will appreciate the fact that the daisy can also lower blood sugar. Apart from that, the herb has the ability to stop bleeding and helps in the treatment of skin diseases - including acne and eczema. The common daisy heals ulcers and is often added to healing ointments.

Common Hop (Humulus lupulus)

Ensures a good night’s sleep and wards off low spirits

A

possessing excellent preservative properties. Along with alpha acids, which provide most of the bitter flavor in beer, the essential oils from the hops provide other flavors and aromas, like floral or grassy notes.

lthough almost everyone knows that hops are the main ingredient for brewing beer, very few people seem to be able to list all the health benefits the hop plant has. Hop is, among other things, one of the most powerful herbs to enhance relaxation, calmness and good quality sleep. The effects of hop can be compared to those of chemical antidepressants. But unlike them, hop does not have any undesirable effects. In treating insomnia the hop plant is a very effective natural remedy. In addition, the herb supplies your body with a plethora of minerals and vitamins B!

Hop stems are 4-edged rough-haired and reach up to 1–6.5 yards 1–6 meters (1–6.5 yards) in length. Hop flowers are dioecious and they show up in July. The cone-like inflorescence is harvested from the second half of August to early September. It is at this time that they contain the highest levels of active substances. Hops need to be dried immediately, ideally in semi-shade at temperatures not exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). They are to be dried in a single layer to ensure even drying. For a small amount of hops the speediest method is to use a microwave or an oven. Hop is a perennial plant, it can grow in one place for 30 or more years. The hop plant’s reproduction method is that male and female flowers develop on separate plants, although occasionally a fertile individual will develop that contains both male and female flowers. Because pollinated seeds are undesirable for brewing beer, only female plants are grown in hop fields, thus preventing pollination. Female plants are propagated vegetatively, and male plants are culled if the plants are grown from seeds.

HOP PLANT UNDER THE MICROSCOPE Common hop belongs to the same family as hemp (Cannabinaceae) and to the order Urticaceae (nettles). The plant is a vigorous, climbing, herbaceous perennial, usually trained to grow up strings in a field called a hopfield, hop garden (in the South of England), or hop yard (in U.S.) when grown commercially. The herb sends up new shoots in early spring and dies back to the cold-hardy rhizome in fall. Hop shoots grow very rapidly, and at the peak of growth can grow 8 to 20 inches (20 to 50 centimeters) per week. Humulus lupulus bines climb by wrapping clockwise around anything within reach, and individual bines typically grow between 7 to 50 ft (2 to 15 m) depending on what is available to grow on. The leaves are opposite, rough to the touch, with a 2.8 to 4.7 in (7 to 12 cm) leafstalk and a heart-shaped, fan-lobed blade 4.7 to 9.8 in (12 to 25 cm ) long and broad; the edges are coarsely toothed. When the hop bines run out of material to climb, horizontal shoots sprout between the leaves of the main stem to form a network of stems wound round each other. The fruits are long greenish yellow achene, covered with cup-shaped glands emitting essential oils and tannins of characteristic scent and

HEALTH BENEFITS Hops, namely female fruits, which are the most effective, contain flavonoids which have potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties. A flavonoid in hops has also been found to help reduce weight gain, lower elevated cholesterol and reduce high blood sugar. These conditions all contribute to what’s known as metabolic syndrome, which significantly increases a person’s risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Hops flavonoids also have anti-can-

cer and anti-ulcer properties. Recent research shows that hops may provide promising preventive therapy for some cancers. Studies have found that hops may spur the ability to protect against some forms of cancer, including breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers. Hops act against bacteria and can destroy about 40 species of these germs, even the bacteria against which antibiotics have ceased to be effective. This property of hops has been scientifically proven many times. However, traditionally, hops are mainly used as a natural remedy for insomnia, nervous exhaustion, stress, overwork, tension, irritation, heart pounding of nervous origin, and nervousness. Hops alleviate pain - especially in headaches and migraines - and prevents convulsions. It is diuretic and slightly laxative. Hops may be useful for rheumatism and inflammation of nerves or skin, and is able to mitigate the symptoms of menopause or andropause. Hops cleansethe blood

and liver. In the past, it used to be applied as a remedy against high temperature and fever. Preliminary research shows hops can also be useful for stomach inflammation and stomach ulcer prevention. The herb encourages the release of gastric juice, and thus boosts appetite. Tip: Hops infusion Fill a glass jar with a handful of fresh hops or two teaspoons of dried hops and pour 16 fl oz (0.5 l) of lukewarm water over it. Let it macerate overnight. Strain in the morning and the infusion is ready to be used. Ideally, take one tablespoon a day. The treatment should not last for more than three months. The infusion should be used for stomach problems, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. It calms, helps treat insomnia and acts as a diuretic.

Golden Mustache (Callisia fragrans)

TAMES YOUR ALLERGY

C

allisia fragrans, commonly known as the Golden Mustache, Basket Plant, Chain Plant or Inch Plant comes from the tropical forests of South America and belongs to the family Comemelinaceae. It is cultivated in Central America, the Pacific and the warmer parts of Australia. In Europe it is more commonly grown as a houseplant.

may be so universally healing. However, as it possesses such strong healing powers, it is necessary to stick to the prescribed doses of medication based on the diagnosis.. While taking Callisia fragrans preparations you should follow the advice of Paracelsus (1493-1541), a Swiss physician, alchemist and astrologer, who once said: “All things are poison, and nothing is without poison, the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison.” There are no side effects when you adhere to the prescribed dose.

THERAPEUTIC USE The plant is a great supplement to treatment of a broad spectrum of diseases. Leaves of Callisia fragrans are utilized for treatment of various skin diseases, burns, and joint disorders. The leaves contain biologically active flavonoids, such as quercetin and kaempferol, neutral glycol and phospholipids and their fatty acid compositions. According to The American Cancer Society, quercetin helps provide resistance to infections, arthritis, asthma, allergies and mucous membrane disease, heart disease, diabetes, and can even control cancer cell growth. Kaempferol possesses diuretic properties and thus helps to treat urinary tract diseases and is effective for allergy relief, too. Beta-sitosterol, another highly active substance contained in Callisia fragrans, decreases cholesterol levels in the blood and both strengthens and cleanses the walls of blood vessels. Callisia fragrans is further utilized for the treatment of atherosclerosis, metabolic diseases, the endocrine system, and inflammations of the prostate. It is also rich in vitamin C, vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and V15 (Panthotenic acid), vitamin RR (nicotine acid) and micro-nutrients, such as copper, iron, and nickel.

RECOMMENDED TREATMENT OF ALLERGIES Crush the leaves and stalks (ideally stored in plastic bags in a fridge), with a rolling pin, for example, to make one heaped tablespoon of Callisia. Pour 1 pint (1/2 liter) of water over it, bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for about 15 minutes. Let steep for two hours and strain. Take one teaspoon one hour after one of your daily meals for seven days. Then take a break for five days. If the symptoms still persist, repeat the cycle. If any undesirable reactions occur, stop taking Callisia fragrans and consult your doctor. Please note that with any type of allergy you should not be drinking milk, or eating dairy products, sausages, chocolate, hot dishes, oranges and kiwi. You should also be eating chicken from small domestic farm breeds, not from large-scale intensive poultry farms. If you suffer from allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, Callisia fragrans inhalations can help. Make 1 pint (0.5 liter) of a callisia fragrans infusion by mixing one teaspoon of dried callisia with water and bring to a boil and then simmer for 15 minutes. Put a towel over your head and inhale the steam from a bowl of hot infusion for three minutes.

NATURAL MIRACLE The list of illnesses Callisia fragrans helps to treat is so extensive that it is hard to believe a single plant

Tips: Balm for external allergic symptoms Pour 1.5 fl oz (40 ml) of olive oil and 1 fl oz (30 ml) of spirituous infusion made of at least 20 callisia fragrans nodes into a glass vial. Screw the cap firmly and shake sharply for 7 minutes before using to let the ingredients blend. The balm is for external use only. Callisia fragrans decoction Put one large leaf of the herb in a glass or enamel pot and fill it with 2 pints (1 l) of water. Simmer for at least 15 minutes, remove the leaf and let the decoction cool down and then store in the refrigerator. The decoction is intended for both internal and external use. It should be consumed within a few days.

Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

GREAT NATURAL REMEDY FOR HEALING WOUNDS

C

ommon yarrow, an aromatic member of the Asteraceae (Compositae) family is one of the oldest medicinal herbs. Chinese medicine has been using its healing powers for over 4000 years. It’s a shame we perceive it as little more than a weed today, rather than broad-spectrum medicine, because yarrow is most certainly an herb to keep at hand in any case of emergency. Its ability to stop bleeding is nothing short of miraculous. Yarrow is able to treat everything from nosebleeds to chainsaw mishaps. It can be used with equal success internally and externally and is absolutely an herb to know. Allegedly, the Greek hero Achilles is said to have treated his and his soldiers’ injuries with yarrow. In medieval times people used to hang yarrow over their doorway or windows to ward off the plague.

colored; they flower from June until October. Yarrow blossoms grow in flat-topped composite clusters at the top of the stems. The generally 3 to 8 ray flowers are ovate to round. Disk flowers range from 15 to 40. The inflorescences are visited by many insects, featuring a generalized pollination system The small achenelike fruits are called cypsela. HEALTH BENEFITS Common yarrow is known mainly for its wound healing capabilities, particularly in staunching the flow of blood. The herb is commonly called nosebleed or soldier’s woundwort because the juice of its leaves and stem can stop bleeding. Many North American tribes chew the leaves as a remedy for toothache as well as a number of other ailments. The anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic, effects of yarrow can help with receding gums or abnormal menstruation. Yarrow also has diuretic properties, improves digestion and has a very positive effect on metabolism, which may result in the loss of excess weight. At the same time it boosts appetite, as well as the formation of bile, and acts favorably to those suffering from gastrointestinal tract discomfort. Flavonoids contained in yarrow extracts mild inflammation that may be the cause of many illnesses such as a sore throat, arthritis, respiratory issues and stomach-aches. As mentioned above, yarrow is used externally for wound disinfection, but also for hemorrhoids, and inflammation in the oral cavity.

OCCURRENCE AND HARVESTING Common yarrow is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in North America, Asia and Europe, where it is most widely spread in both wet and dry areas, such as roadsides, meadows, fields and coastal places. You can find it in the lowlands as well as in the mountains. Common yarrow is an erect, herbaceous, perennial plant that produces one to several stems 0.66–3.28 ft (0.2–1 m) in height, and has a spreading rhizomatous growth form. Yarrow’s hardy rhizome, or underground stem, develops from underground runners as the extensive root system spreads. The lacy, finely-divided leaves are multi-pinnate, and grow alternately, clasping at the base along the simple, erect and angular stem. The feather-like leaves may reach 6 in (15.2 cm) in length. They mound near the ground in early growth; then the slightly hairy stems reach upwards to 3 ft (0.91 m) in height during flowering. The stem is straight, smooth and plump. The tiny blossoms may be white, pinkish or lilac

Tip: Yarrow tea for migraines Pour 1 pint (0.5 l) of hot water over 3 tablespoons of chopped yarrow stals. Let steep for 15 minutes, strain and drink cold once a day.

Compress for splitting headaches Pour a mug of boiling water over 0.3 oz (10 grams) of stalks and flowers and let it steep for 20 minutes under a lid. Then dip a piece of soft cloth, e.g. a handkerchief, into the infusion, and place it over the forehead and temples. Use either a warm infusion, or put it in the fridge and let it cool and then apply. Choose whichever makes you feel better.

A natural cure for diabetes

Lower Your Blood Sugar Levels The number of people affected by diabetes is growing year by year. Since 1980 the number of those affected has increased by a factor of 2.5 and, if the total keeps rising in a similar manner, by the year 2035 we will be facing a dire situation, in which in some countries 10% of people will suffer from diabetes.

H

owever, diabetes doesn’t only mean avoiding too much sugar, and it is certainly not cured by indulging in sweets with artificial sweeteners. Diabetes is a serious metabolic disease demanding a healthy diet and regular exercise. Without this causal treatment of the illness, it is not possible to cure anybody. The most common complications of diabetes are of the cardiovascular nature – the number one cause of death is heart attack, number two a stroke, followed by blindness, kidney failure and loss of limbs. It must be said, though, that the disease can in most cases be avoided and it is treatable.

Most diabetics find themselves in something of a black hole of helplessness and have no idea as to how to change their fortune. Even worse news is the fact that more than half of those who suffer from type 2 diabetes have no knowledge of their disease. According to some estimates, the occurrence of diabetes has increased about 700 percent in the last 50 years. “What you will not learn from your doctors, however, is that type 2 diabetes can be avoided altogether. The cure lies in truly understanding its basic cause (which is the worsening of sensitivity towards insulin and leptin) and in realizing simple, inexpensive adjustments to one’s lifestyle, which will lead to a substantial improvement in your state of health.

KNOWN LIES ABOUT DIABETES There is a huge amount of misinformation regarding diabetes, the growing epidemic.

Herbs for Common Illnesses

TYPE 1 DIABETES AND INSULIN DEPENDENCY

therefore to supply energy to cells. In other words, it is impossible to live without it, and under normal conditions the pancreas produces a sufficient amount of it. However, certain factors exist which can be risky for the pancreas.

This type of diabetes is an autoimmune disease. In people thus affected their own immune system attacks pancreatic cells, which produce insulin. The result is the inability to produce the hormone independently. This disease usually appears in people younger than 20 and, as of yet, we do not have a cure for it. Individuals afflicted this way are forced to supply their bodies with insulin for the rest of their lives. What is most striking about this illness is probably the notion that its occurrence increases hand-in-hand with type 2 diabetes.

RISK FACTORS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES The probability of contracting diabetes increases with these factors: age 45 and over, overweight or obese, family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, depression, gustatory diabetes, atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, HDL cholesterol levels under 0.043 oz/Gal, triglyceride value on an empty stomach over 0.3 oz/Gal, treatment with atypical antipsychotics, glucocorticoids, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic sleep deprivation. If you have one or more of these risk factors or if you have increased levels of sugar in your blood, there is a significant chance you will be diagnosed with diabetes and treated either with antidiabetics in the form of pills or in the form of insulin injections.

TYPE 2 DIABETES: Almost all patients can be cured. A much more common version of this disease is the type 2 diabetes, affecting up to 95 percent of all diabetics. During this illness the body does produce insulin but is unable to decode it correctly and use it effectively. The disease is considered to be an advanced phase of insulin resistance. This brings about increased levels of blood sugar, and consequently an array of complications. A commonly disregarded fact is that type 2 diabetes can be avoided completely and almost in 100 percent of cases it is possible to cure it. The symptoms of diabetes are: excessive thirst, extreme hunger (even after having eaten), nausea and vomiting, abnormal weight gain or loss of body mass, increased tiredness, excitability, blurred vision, slow healing of wounds, frequent infections (dermal, urinary and vaginal) and insensitivity or the feeling of pins and needles in hands or feet.

NATURAL PRODUCTS FOR REDUCING DIABETES

Beans

They are both nutritious and low in calories and have a lot of fiber which will keep you going for a long time. A handful of beans can, in addition, adjust the sugar levels in your blood and stabilize both blood pressure and cholesterol levels. We should add them to our diets for their low glycemic index.

THE MISTAKEN IMAGE OF DIABETES Diabetes isn’t an illness of blood sugar levels, but more likely a defect in insulin and leptin signaling, which, without timely treatment, develops from a prediabetes state into full-blown diabetes over time. One of the reasons why standard medicine cannot treat diabetes in any other way except by insulin injections and medication is because it refuses to solve its core cause. The key is insulin sensitivity. The purpose of the pancreas is to produce this hormone and secrete it into the blood stream, where it regulates the level of glucose to one that is vital for the body to function properly. The function of insulin is

Cinnamon

In 2003, Pakistani scientists published a study describing cinnamon as a remedy against diabetes. The participants in the study were dosed daily with 0.035, 0.11 or 2.1 oz of cinnamon for 40 days. After this time the scientists discovered the following effects: The level of blood sugar lowered by 18-29 percent. LDL cholesterol decreased by 7-27 percent. Overall cholesterol shrunk by 12-26 percent, while the protective HDL cholesterol did not. Triglyceride levels were reduced by 23-30 percent.

ally, 40 days before it to show these effects. Afterwards it is possible to take breaks in its use. Since then 52 other studies analysing the effects of cinnamon have been conducted. Nevertheless, it is important to note that since cinnamon really affects the levels of blood sugar, you should be careful not to take big doses of cinnamon when diagnosed with diabetes unless your doctor has agreed.

The Pakistani scientists also discovered that the advantages of using cinnamon were maintained even after the participants stopped consuming it. In practice this means that it is not necessary to take cinnamon daily and it can still show the aforementioned effects during diabetes. However, this applies to long-term use; at the beginning it is necessary to take it for at least a month or ide-

Blueberries

PREVENTING THE ILLNESS

The healing effects of blueberry leaves depends on the way they are collected, as they have to be collected before the berries ripen. Their healing effects have been clinically tested; it is proven that before the ripening of the berries, the leaves contain myrtillin, a substance which not only improves the use of sugar but can also cure the illness. Myrtillin, present in blueberry leaves, is by no accident called “herbal insulin.” Even though blueberry leaves have such amazing attributes, before you start drinking blueberry herbal tea to treat diabetes, consult your doctor.

Type 2 diabetes can be avoided. Even though the disease has broken out, it is possible to treat it. In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreatic cells create insufficient amounts of insulin or the body isn’t able to decode this hormone well and use it accordingly. This state is known as insulin resistance. Glucose is amassed in the blood, but lowering blood sugar levels with antidiabetics is not enought to cure diabetes. Diabetes is a defect of leptin and insulin signal, and the real therapy is based on restoration of the body’s ability to process them. Leptin is a hormone produced by lipoids, the adipose cells. The core function of leptin is to regulate appetite and body weight. It also gives signals to the brain when to eat and when to stop eating. Leptin also helps decide how to store the gained energy and affects the function of insulin. The only known way to regulate leptin and insulin is through a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Cranberries

The healthy red berries were already known to native Americans in ancient times. Europeans discovered them much later. Nevertheless, in the 17th century it was already well known that cranberries alleviate stomach trouble, heal the liver, and help treat illnesses of the bloodstream or tumors. Later on, scientists discovered that cranberries also contain ellagic acid, which can destroy bacteria causing urologic issues. At present, cranberries are becoming more and more prominent in talks about diabetes prevention and treatment, thanks to their ability to effectively lower blood sugar levels.

NUTRITION TIPS You should cut down on your daily intake of simple sugars as much as you can, including products from white flour. An abundant intake of simple sugars is very common in most people. Glucose and fructose, each using a different mechanism, both bring about the development of diabetes. Take in proteins mostly through vegetables. Legumes and nuts are also therapeutically helpful for diabetics. It is also a good idea to add sport into your daily routine. Regular exercise is essential for preventing diabetes and its treatment of an already evolved case as it decreases the resistance of insulin and leptin. It is very important to establish and maintain healthy sleping habits. A lack of sleep or sleep of poor quality leads to distortion of insulin release, thereby increasing the risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. To ensure your body takes in vitamin D, which also helps treat diabetes, spend enough time in the sunlight regularly. Out of a group of dietetic foods it is advisable to comsume those containing vitamins of the B group, as well as chrome, magnesium and zinc. These foods include fish, lamb or chicken, just to name a few.

The berry (Fructus vitis idaeae) – it contains huge amounts of vitamins, mineral compounds and salts, as well as sugar, tannins and acids. Pick the berries when they are completely ripe (from August till October). Some varieties grown in the garden can be harvested even twice per season. Fresh berries should be canned or dried immediately, be it in the shade or in the sun. The leaf (Folium vitis idaeae) – it contains mineral salts, organic acids, flavonoids, triterpenes, tannins and phenol glycosides. It is the leaf that makes for such a useful additive in treating diabetes. Collect the leaves in late summer or in fall. Dry them in the shade or in the sun. The dried product is dark green, has no smell and has a sharp bitter taste.

Mix up some herbs to get rid of obesity

Lose Weight The most common cause of obesity and being overweight is the intake of unhealthy,

unnaturally concentrated and artificially flavored meals. Obesity can also be brought about by a lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, a lack of sleep, a healthy diet not

appropriate for your physique, the side effects of certain medications, excessive stress, dependency on industrially treated foodstuffs, genetic predisposition or by a random combination of the mentioned factors.

N

obody needs to constantly count calories, run marathons or stick to unnatural dietary procedures to become slim. It is much more reasonable to improve your health by keeping a balanced diet and making better lifestyle choices. A long-term healthy lifestyle in reality means a healthy weight and body. Following unnatural diets leads only to alternating between dietary cures and overeating.

culate your physique type using Ayurveda or traditional Chinese medicine and then adapting your diet to your body type. It is possible that some people fail to reduce their weight even when they eat healthy food, but it is most likely because they eat food which is not beneficial to their body type. For example, eating an abundance of raw salads will not help you lose weight if you have a body type that tends to retain cold and/or dampness.

OWN REGIME

FOOD DEPENDENCIES

The most important rule for healthy living is to base the diet on consuming fresh meals made from natural foodstuffs. The best foods are natural, local and organic ones. Most importantly, you should cut food that is unhealthy, unnaturally concentrated or artificially flavored out of your diet. If you are eating healthy food and not loosing, but rather putting putting on weight, it is advised to cal-

Even though obesity is now connected to a lack of exercise, overeating, lack of sleep, low socioeconomic status, stress, or genetic predisposition, the question remains whether we gain weight because we keep overlooking one crucial factor – dependency. The intake of certain foods can lead to states of dependency akin to drug abuse. The effects of food

on the brain (or our psyche) is, in addition, a fairly uncharted territory – unlike the effects of edibles on our physical body, which has been the focus of scientific studies for decades. According to the international classification of diseases used within the European Union, addiction is a collection of behavioral, cognitive and physiological phenomena evolving from repeated use of a particular substance. Addiction typically consists of the following manifestations:

The substance we have developed a dependency on is as risky to the same extent as all the others, even if each of these affect another organ or system in the body. All of them lead to very similar biochemical processes in the brain. It is well established that acute exposure to many addictive substances produce increases in dopamine, or the “reward hormone”. Apart from increasing the release of dopamine and adrenaline addictive substances build a so-called memory imprint, which grows every time we consume the substance. Once the memory imprint has been created any other consumption of the particular substance leads to the need for further doses.

A strong desire to use the substance

Issues when controlling the use of the substance (concerning the beginning and end of the use or

The memory imprint is difficult to get rid of even after years of abstinence. To cover a cake made for a child in cocaine powder is rightfully punishable by law due to the fact it creates dependency, while covering pastry in sugar is a sweet treat for even very young childern and is still very common. There are huge differences in reactions people have to these substances, and as yet, we are not able to precisely predict what reaction somebody may have. For this reason, according to the authors of a study conducted at the University of Californian, the government should try out restrictions on sugar, which it already has successfully applied in the areas of alcohol and nicotine.

Identification of tolerance – the need to increase the taken amount of the substance in order to have the same effects as at the beginning of taking it

Gradual negligence of hobbies to the benefit of

Continued use even after obvious proof of

the used psychoactive substance

the substance’s negative effect

Trials on animals have proven without a doubt that the intake of sugar meets all these characteristics. An excessive intake of sugar does not only increases one’s intoxication, but also intensifies the cravings for sweets. Sugar (similarly to cocaine, for example) affects the reward center in the brain and many biochemical mediators then signal the brain‘s desire for more. Sugar, apart from affecting brain cells, also raises the production of insulin, and a spike in insulin levels can lead to a whole array of health issues, such as irritation, sped-up aging, high blood pressure or increased fat depositing. Testing on animals also proves that sugar is a highly addictive substance, much more so than, for example, caffeine. We do not give caffeine to children, but it‘s still perfectly normal to give them sweets as a reward for good school results or at the doctor’s. A SUGAR DETOX Whether it be alcohol, cocaine or sugar that we are addicted to, the problem is effectively the same.

A DONUT OR A CARROT?

The worst foodstuffs are usually the ones that are the easiest to come by, and which are also often the cheapest. Dietary experts describe this situation as the “poisonous foods environment.” In such an environment it is practically impossible to walk through a city without being constantly tempted by fast food outlets. Moreover, a trip to the cinema seems incomplete without soda and buckets of popcorn, and even most pediatricians reward their young patients with sweets. When hot dogs are available on every main street and a plate of something healthy is hard to come by, what should we then opt for?

Healthy nutrition needs to be supported by sufficient movement, sleep and being outdoors in the fresh air and sun.

WHY NOT EAT DIETARY FOODSTUFFS?

flavored industrially produced foods.

Fashionable fad diets usually have very little to do with health, and dietary meals reduce our wallets more than anything else. The food industry welcomes special diets and new modern micro-nutrients, thanks to which it can constantly flood the market with new miraculous foodstuffs with a high price tag. It must be said that for the industry, the most profitable ready-to-eat foods are those made from the cheapest ingredients, which nowadays are mostly corn and soy in hundreds of variants – from concentrated fructose syrup to vegetable protein isolate. The cheap base is then enriched by some fashionable nutrient, or reduced by a nutrient that is recommended to be eaten in moderation, such as gluten, cholesterol or saturated fats. Advertisements and nutrition consultants paid by the industry will then advise us how healthy margarines full of trans fats are for us. Dietary foodstuffs are in reality often just highly industrially-modified products with a lower amount of whatever is deemed unhealthy at the moment. They contain more additives in order to make the created semi-product edible. In recent years a whole array of dietary miracles have appeared on the shelves.

Low fat dairy products were a reaction to the statement that it is necessary to eat less animal fat and cholesterol. During their preparation, after homogenization and pasteurization, milk fat was usually removed, and along with it vitamins A and D, both soluble in fats. It was also customary to add dried milk, containing oxidized cholesterol (the one which seriously damages the veins). Other common additives were sugars and starch – nutrients we consume excessively and which, if present in abundance, efficiently transform into fat reserves in our bodies. In fat-free milk there is a much lower amount of healthy short-chain fatty acids. Included among these are palmitic acid, which limits the risk of insulin resistance (the base for diabetes) and conjugated linoleic acid, which significantly reduces the risk of cancer. and oxidized cholesterol, poor in healthy nutritional fats and vitamins, which feed nobody and have no taste unless artificially flavored. Fats naturally present in food in fact provide flavor and a longer feeling of fullness! Without them we become hungry faster, and whatever substitute we are eating has no taste. For this reason, people on a diet constantly munch and are neither full nor happy.

pleasant and also leads to feelings of deprivation. Moreover, no temporary diet can ensure a long-term effect. Sticking to diets can restrict the intake of essential micro-nutrients and the outcome can be a nutrient deficiency or feeling irritable. Rapid weight loss leads to a hormonal imbalance, which in turn leads to an alarm reaction of the organism as it tries to reach its original state. Biochemically, an extreme drop in leptin levels follows, and this is the hormone responsible for the control of energy and appetite. The function of the thyroid lowers and the whole metabolism weakens. Forget diets and dietary foodstuffs: the base for a healthy body and weight are natural, quality ingredients and meals prepared from them. This can include buckwheat, chocolate or bread with butter. For ensuring one’s health, nobody needs to consume any semi-products with low fat, low calorie or low cholesterol label. The only things that should be excluded from food are chemicals, additives, leftover pharmaceuticals and pesticide residue. The healthiest produce grows in quality soil, without having pesticides sprayed over it, and comes from well-fed and well-treated animals.

UNHEALTHY DIA-CHOCOLATE For the correct utilization of glucose, we need insulin, which is lacking during diabetes, and for this reason fructose has been used to sweeten food for diabetics for years. However, nowadays we know that concentrated fructose changes into fats in the liver and its abundance in our industrial food production era is responsible for the increasing numbers of obese people and individuals with liver steatosis. They have developed these illnesses by drinking sweetened lemonades and dairy cocktails with concentrated corn syrup, which has fructose at its base rather than alcohol. DIET COKE LEADING TO WEIGHT GAIN With the goal of decreasing their calorie count, many unhealthy drinks are sweetened by artificial sweeteners instead of sugar. In reality, no studies exist to confirm that the consumption of these dietary beverages helps weight loss. On the contrary, studies claiming otherwise are piling up. Artificial sweeteners, according to these studies, disrupt appetite control and their consumers take in more calories overall than consumers of the same drinks with sugar. Another study found a connection between regular consumption of dietary beverages and an increased risk of heart failure and strokes. More studies confirmed that aspartame decreases insulin sensitivity more than sugar does. Some of these works connect its intake with a higher amount of tumor diseases, such as leukemia and lymphomas.

CURIOSITIES ABOUT WEIGHT-LOSS DIETS Sticking to diets means following nonsensical reduction regimes, severely limiting of the amount of food eaten, and eating dietary absurdities in place of real foodstuffs. Some studies show that such behavior is a consistent indicator of future weight gain. It is difficult to stay on a diet long-term, because it is not

I AM EATING HEALTHILY, WHY AM I NOT LOSING WEIGHT? – the natural metabolic needs of the organism decrease with age. In simple terms this means that to keep slim we need to gradually eat less or move more. A problem arises if we have been trying out unnaturally limited food intake, varied diets, or meal skipping since our twenties. This only serves to quicken the natural decrease of the organism. Sticking to diets

– as a part of the body’s natural reaction to stress, aside from many other biochemical changes, cortisol is released in increased amounts. Among the effect of this hormone is the reduction of muscle, possible worsening of insulin dependence and the boosting of fat reserves in the belly area. Everyday stress

– we only crave something small and sweet. We eat at night or, in place of healthy oatmeal we munch on an unhealthy muesli bar full of sugars and coated with a fatty topping. For this, only noting down in detail all we’ve eaten helps. Unconscious eating

Digestion malfunctions

Ease Digestion Diarrhea is the term used for the liquid draining of intestines more often

than three times a day. Generally, it can be divided into chronic and acute.

The acute form of diarrhea is most commonly caused by an infection (salmonella, dysentery), a problem with one’s diet, or an allergy. Chronic diarrhea may be

caused organically (for example by an intestinal infection or by a poorly-functioning pancreas), or it can appear without any obvious disease of the digestive system and is induced mostly by nerve and mental factors.

T

he treatment follows the identified cause. If the diarrhea lasts longer than three days or is very painful, it can be dangerous – in such cases it is essential to search for professional medical assistance. The same goes for cases when it happens to contain blood.

the body reacting with cramps, pain and thin stool once again. When the appetite begins to return, start gently with a light vegetable soup, white rice with carrot, unsweetened apple compote, blueberry compote or puree. Animal charcoal, available in any pharmacy, helps to absorb the liquid from the intestine and to stop the pain and diarrhea.

TREATING DIARRHEA AT HOME A severe danger associated with acute diarrhea is the substantial loss of liquids (dehydration), which is especially dangerous for small children and older people. For this reason, ensure a sufficient intake of liquid to make up for the loss, and start a curative diet. With acute diarrhea, limit yourself only to dry white baked goods; wholegrain baked goods irritate the intestine. Any change in diet will lead to

Another option is to mix common tormentil powder – a tip of a knife’s worth – with a grated apple, and use this mixture several times a day. This recipe is suitable for children of four years and older. Rice water is also recommended for those suffering from diarrhea, and you can even add some lemon juice into the drink.

68

HERBAL TEAS AGAINST DIARRHEA For diarrhea, the common tormentil (Potentilla erecta) proves very helpful: take a teaspoon of powdered root, pour over 5 oz boiling water, brew for 7 minutes, then strain. Drink 3 or 4 times a day before a meal. Take 2 teaspoons of dried blueberries, pour over 8.5 oz cold water and let brew overnight. Drink twice a day, eating the wet blueberries as well. If there are no herbs available use real black tea and drink it throughout the day. Unsweetened, of course! Mix 1.1 oz medicinal comfrey root (Symphytum officinale), 0.8 oz ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata), 0.8 oz common knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare), 0.8 oz field horsetail (Equisetum arvense). Take 3 teaspoons of this mixture and pour into 6.5 oz of boiling water. Drink the liquid lukewarm in small sips.

People suffering from diarrhea or dysentery can be treated to a cup of blackberry leaves tea daily: take 0.5 oz blackberry leaves and sprouts, pour over 17 oz boiling water, brew for 15 minutes and strain. Drink lukewarm throughout the day. A similar effect can be seen with a tea made from leaves and young raspberry sprouts, or from agrimony tops prepared in the same way.

Get two to four full teaspoons of chopped willow bark and pour over 17 oz cold water, allow to brew for 30 minutes, boil for a short time and strain. Drink warm 30 minutes before a meal.

Tea from blackberry plant roots was successfully used during World War 1 to cure dysentery. The dried root (collected early in spring – in February and March) is chopped into very small pieces, and 2 teaspoons of the material is to be boiled for 20 minutes in 17 oz water. The tea is drunk unsweetened and very warm. For children make the drink weaker. The root of medicinal comfrey works as a remedy for pains and cramps in the intestinal tract, and for this reason it is a very useful treatment for diarrhea and dysentery. Put 2 teaspoons of the root into 6.8 oz cold water, brew for half an hour, let it reach boiling point, take off the heat, brew for a further 5 minutes and then strain. Drink the liquid 2 times a day. A poultice against diarrhea Put 0.5 oz silverweed (Argentina anserina) into 17 oz water, boil for 5 minutes, brew for a further 5 minutes and strain. The hot poultice soothes the cramping pains of the intestinal tract.

DIFFICULT MOTION More and more people are beginning to suffer from constipation. Only

a few, however, are aware that a healthy body produces stool at minimum once a day. Irregular and strenuous motion involving stiff, dry and smelly defecate means that the metabolism has slowed down, and the normal

function of the intestine has been interrupted. This means decaying bacteria are not passed and fermentation processes start to take place. Allowing for the creation of harmful, deeply poisonous substances, which infiltrate

the intestinal wall directly into the bloodstream. Slowly but surely you are poisoning your entire body.

C

onstipation is the cause of other issues, for example headaches, chronic infections in various organs, tumors, varicose veins, back pains and more. Typically, it is cause by a lack of fiber in the intestine, irregular eating habits and lack of exercise, along with stress, tension and hormonal irregularities.

into the rectum with 6.8 oz cold water. Hold the liquid inside for one minute and then let it go; the contents of your intestine have to leave naturally! Softly massaging your belly with a circular motion could help as well. Another useful tip is to shower your belly with cold water, leading to perfusion of the area.

TREATING CONSTIPATION AT HOME Fiber has a significant effect on the intestine. Its presence in food supports the bowel movements, known as peristalsis. Fiber bonds water to itself, softening the contents of the intestine and therefore making it easier for the contents to leave.

Lastly, it is important to give the body a sufficient amount of liquid. Drink one or two glasses of clear water or an herbal tea on an empty stomach in the morning. Do not drink during mealtimes, but fifteen minutes before and thirty minutes after a meal, at the earliest. You can also use mineral water with a laxative effect. Avoid overeating as that can lead to constipation! Keep in mind that even black tea and coffee can cause constipation.

Good sources of fiber are leaf and root vegetables, fruit, seeds, legumes, grains and wholegrain products.

Laxative effects are known in plums, dried plums, apples, figs, strawberries, licorice, raw lettuce, spinach and sour cabbage.

To create a habit of regular motion it is advisable to apply a enema. Apply the enema

Fig treatment: Put four to eight washed figs into 17 oz warm water and let sit in the liquid overnight. In the morning, eat the figs and drink the water in which they were submerged. To make the treatment stronger, use olive oil instead of water, and leave the figs in it for up to 24 hours. Fnish the treatment as soon as the intestine starts working regularly again. Drink 5 oz sauerkraut liquid every day in the morning, on an empty stomach. Also, eat plenty of the sauerkraut itself. Flax seed is another one of the best remedies against constipation. It helps to lubricate the intestine and give it fiber. Chew up the entire seed – if our teeth are not good enough anymore, we can grind it and add to food such as purees, or eat it with cheese and salad and so on. Otherwise, use two to three teaspoons of the seed three times a day.

HERBAL TEAS AGAINST CONSTIPATION We can prepare a laxative tea from one teaspoon of anise (Pimpinella anisum) seeds, two teaspoons of alder buckthorn bark (Frangula alnus), two teaspoons of common sea buckthorn root (Hippophae rhamnoides), two teaspoons of licorice root and three teaspoons of senna leaves. Boil two teaspoons of the mixture in 8.5 oz water for twenty minutes and strain. Drink one or two cups per day, especially in the evening. Prepare a mixture from 0.5 oz alder buckthorn bark and 1 oz peppermint. Take a spoonful of this blend and pour over 8.5 oz boiling water, brew for ten minutes and strain. Drink the beverage in the evening.

Best Natural Remedies for Depression

Improve Your State of Mind and Boost Positivity Depression is a state characterized by excessive sadness. The feelings of de-

spondency, pessimism or self-pity are usually depressive reactions to painful events in one’s life and tend to disappear during a short time frame with-

out the need to be treated. However, if chronic anxiety and sadness appear, the afflicted loses joy for life and it is considered to be a very serious state, and one we should not overlook under any circumstances.

D

epression can appear at any age, even in childhood. Its most serious forms mostly affect adults, especially women, who suffer from depression twice as often as men. Women can feel very bad after giving birth.

Post-partum depression starts about three weeks after giving birth and lasts at least a month. If it lingers for longer than this or if it is too strong, treatment is necessary. There is an ongoing discussion about what causes depression and how to cure it effectively. Nowadays, doctors claim that genes are at play here, along with chemical procedures in the brain. Keep in mind that long-lasting feelings of pessimism, sadness, despair, tiredness, insomnia or thoughts about death cannot be cured at home. In such cases you have to search for professional medical help. Depression is sometimes a symptom of other diseases or it can be caused by the medicine you are using. It is essential to consult with your doctor. Above all, do not fear talking about your emotions. The earlier these emotions are intercepted, the better and faster you can get out of them!

Herbs for Common Illnesses

SUITABLE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS Wheat bran, walnuts and hazelnuts have a strong anti-depressive effect. Add bran to porridge, clabber milk, or curd cheese; it is recommended to eat 1 spoonful of bran daily with breakfast and about 10 nuts. Magnesium is essential for the nerves. It lessens feelings of anxiety and stops the creation of negative emotions. For this reason, make sure to add foods containing magnesium into your diet: dried ale yeast, peeled barley, hazelnuts, walnuts, wheat sprouts and bran, poppy seeds, cocoa, legumes, and mineral water containing magnesium. Vitamin C and vitamins from the B group can also effectively support your body against depressive states and moods. The richest source of vitamin C are rosehip, chives, horseradish, Brussels sprouts, and blackcurrant. Vitamins of the B group are contained in baking yeast, dried ale yeast, fish, wholegrain cereals and legumes. The complex substances present in celery power the nerve system and give the body cells energy, as well as helping to get rid of irritation and depressive states. You should therefore add a lot of celery into your daily menu or drink about 3.4 oz celeriac juice prepared in a juicer every morning. The celeriac juice is not recommended for pregnant women!

FIGHTING TIREDNESS To refresh a tired body and mind, fruit infusions can be helpful. Particularly good are Rosehip tea or rosehip combined with hibiscus, green tea and maté tea. For many of us fruit infusions are not of a strong enough caliber, so we turn instead to caffeine or guarana. A third possible solution is any product containing ginseng. Leuzea (rhaponticum carthamoides) and coenzyme Q10 can also work against tiredness.

74

Did you know that…? The Damask rose It is rated very highly as an effective and safe natu-

ral antidepressant; even many conventional doctors recommend it due to its properties. The petals of

this rose are pressed to make precious and expensive essential oil used to cure depression. The oil

works even in very small concentrations. Apart from treating depression, it also reduces bad moods, feelings of culpability, insomnia, tension or anxiety, and

can even help with frigidity or impotence. It improves blood circulation, renews and regenerates skin and,

last but not least, balances out the hormonal system.

STRONG NATURAL MEDICINES

Perforate St. John’s wort

Motherwort

Chamomile

(Hypericum perforatum)

(Leonurus cardiaca)

(Matricaria recutita)

This herb drives away stress, depression, insomnia and anxiety. The best time for using it is in the winter months as during the warm months of the year, when the sun is out for longer, some people may have issues using it. Consuming this plant can lead to photosensitivity – where the skin is especially sensitive to the sun’s rays. What this means is that there is a risk of developing a rash or tiny brown spots all over the body. Perforate St. John’s wort cures states connected with a lack of sunlight, such as long-term gloominess, bad moods, overall feelings of tiredness and loss of motivation. In addition, it is useful for the cleansing of the body.

This herb, as its Latin name suggests, helps our heart above all else. It reduces arrhythmia and slows down the pulse. It also lowers blood pressure and functions as a sedative, and is therefore helpful for insomniacs, to treat anxiety or to help those who are prone to anger.

This plant is useful for a wide array of issues. It has anti-inflammatory, disinfecting, anti-allergic, immunity-stimulating and anti-cramp properties. It is often used as a supplementary natural cure for depression. It softens some of its symptoms, especially irritability and insomnia, and also soothes the effects of stress and increases appetite.

Prepare on your own: Motherwort tea

One spoonful of the herb is boiled for two minutes in a cup of water. Drink twice a day.

Prepare on your own: Oil from perforate St. John’s wort

Cut up 5.3 oz fresh perforate St. John’s wort stems with blooming flowers, put in a jar and pour over 17 oz quality almond oil. Place on a sun-bathed windowsill and let brew for around six weeks. After this time the oil will have developed a bright red or beautiful scarlet color. Strain the contents into another glass container and close tightly. We can use this even for prevention – one teaspoon 2 to 3 times a day.

76

Prepare on your own: Chamomile batha

Mix a handful of chamomile blossoms with a cup of Himalayan or sea salt. You can add two drops of an essential oil from blue chamomile. Stir well and pour into the bath. Be sure to soak in the tub for at least twenty minutes.

Basil

(Ocimum basilicum) Historically, it was consumed for its aphrodisiac effects, though nowadays it is most commonly used as a spice. Nevertheless, it is possible to prepare an excellent therapeutic tea out of it. Basil functions as a natural antidepressant, eases tension, liquidates stress, soothes headaches and helps with insomnia. Prepare on your own: Basil brew

One spoonful of dried basil is immersed in hot water and left to brew for a quarter of an hour. Use as a lukewarm tea and drink twice a day.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis)

The main advantage of this is that is can be used fresh on a regular basis, since it is really easy to grow lemon balm in a small pot on a windowsill throughout the whole year. It smells of citric fruits, which bring life into our bodies and get rid of tiredness. It eliminates stress, insomnia and bad

moods. You can enjoy its properties not only in a tea, but also in a hot summer bath, where you should stay for between twenty minutes to half an hour. Prepare on your own: Lemon balm wine

Prepare this wine from pressed fresh lemon balm leaves, which you then leave to sit in a quality white wine for three days afterwards. After straining, keep the lemon balm wine in a closed bottle in the fridge. Use a small amount every two hours when going through a loss of appetite, anxiety, depression or stomach pains.

Valerian

(Valeriana officinalis) This herb, thanks to its unique contents, helps people suffering from neuroses, anxiety, insomnia, and nerve exhaustion, and can even soothe cramps. Valerian can be substituted for sleeping pills, since it functions very reliably and, contrary to classic medicine, it does not have any side effects. However, the herb is addictive, so it is not recommended to use it for longer than three to four weeks. After this time, it is important to take a break from using it.

that the roots are submerged. Leave to brew for two weeks. You can use twenty drops three times a day or, in the evening, take one teaspoon 45 minutes before going to sleep and then another half an hour later.

Hops

(Humulus lupulus)

Prepare on your own: Valerian tincture

Beer probably springs to mind when you hear hops, but it is possible to use it for other purposes. For example, in the form of a tasty tea that comes in handy periods of shorter days, unexplained gloominess and problematic sleep. The herb helps against irritation, supports in states of unease and functions as a mild sedative.

Wash the fresh roots, chop into small pieces, and pour water over them so

Prepare on your own: A tea from hops

Make Your Own Herbal Medicine

Take Care of Your Teeth and Gums We tend to take our teeth for granted, as though we expect them to be there forever. However, we often neglect to take proper care of them, unlike other parts of our bodies. We only realize we haven’t

been looking after them when a tooth starts to ache. But by then, it is already too late.

P

reventing cavities and oral cavity disease is simple, and anyone can do it on their own. Or at least every adult can, assuming they were taught proper prevention from an early age. It is easy because we already know what damages our teeth and mouth. We know how to protect the body from destructive influences and how to lower or completely eliminate them.

thus creating an acidic environment that further damages the teeth. It is in the interest of oral hygiene to limit the intake of these foods, otherwise dental cavities and inflammation follow soon enough, damaging gums and the anchoring of teeth in the jaw. It is not only the mouth that is endangered: the entire organism is also affected, due to the massive amount of bacteria being spread throughout the body via the bloodstream. Improper dental hygiene can lead to the formation of diseases like myocarditis or heart infarction. The bacteria and toxins that come from inflamed areas can lower the organism’s immune capabilities and are also capable of causing new infections. The negative effect of micro-organisms on the heart, circulatory system (damaging blood vessel walls – atherosclerosis, heart valve damage etc.) have been proven, and so have their effects on the respiratory system and diabetes (which they make worse). Studies on the effect of untreated tooth inflammation during pregnancy are currently underway.

PROPER TOOTH CARE So why is prevention so important in the area of dental health? The hardest thing about it is that the basic, most effective preventive method has to be done by every person on their own, patiently and diligently, every day and always. Our enemy is the constantly re-growing coating on the teeth. Should we not regularly, recurrently, conscientiously and properly remove it, we make our teeth, gums and oral cavity vulnerable to a huge potential risk. We also face issues with certain foodstuffs, which bacteria in dental plaque dissolve,

Herbs for Common Illnesses

You can make many tooth remedies at home. Not only will you be certain about the composition of what you are using, but you will also save money. Besides, making mouth wash and herbal tooth powders is very simple. Herbal mouth wash have a beneficial effect on the gums and breath. The best herbs for making them are thyme, salvia, syzygium, horsetail and mint (which also prevents parodontitis). Other great options include essential oils of mint and tea plant (which also has antiseptic effects), and myrtle, which can function as a disinfectant. Baking soda is a gentle means of whitening the teeth. A sufficient amount of vitamin C, coenzyme Q10 and calcium and magnesium are important as well. Because of that, you should eat foods rich in vitamin C, like citruses, leafy vegetables and broccoli. Magnesium is found in nuts, seeds, legumes and dark-leafed vegetables. TRY HERBAL DENTAL POWDER Herbal powder can be made of baking soda, which also serves to whiten your teeth and refresh your breath. Mint and ginger have the same effect, and they also kill bacteria. To strengthen the gums, sea salt is added to herbal powders as well. So how to go about making it? You will need two spoonfuls of baking soda, half a spoonful of gently ground sea salt, a quarter spoonful of dried ground

ginger and three drops of mint essential oils. Mix all the ingredients and store them in a sealed container. Use half a spoonful of the powder during application. MINT MOUTH WASH Mint essential oils kill the bacteria which cause bad breath, while aloe vera soothes the gums. You will need ¼ l / 8.5 Fl oz water, one teaspoonful natural glycerol, a spoonful of aloe juice and six drops of peppermint essential oil. Mix all the ingredients and store in a covered container. Shake before using and try to use it up within several days after preparation.

STRAWBERRIES WHITEN TEETH

FOR HEALTHY GUMS

Strawberries do not only help whiten pigment

Mint (Mentha spicata) and anise (Pimpinella anisum) freshen the breath. Myrtle (Myrtus) strengthens the gums, works as a disinfectant and preserves the mouth wash. You will need ¼ l / 8.5 Fl oz boiling water, two teaspoonfuls of dried peppermint, one teaspoonful of anise and half a teaspoonful of myrtle tincture. Pour the mouth wash over the mint and anise, and let it cool off. Then decant and add myrtle. Finally, bottle the mixture and shake the container before use.

marks on the skin: they also effectively remove

tooth stains. This is because they contain an enzyme that naturally whitens the teeth. In order to whiten tooth stains and teeth in general,

crush several strawberries and apply them to

the teeth. Let them do their job for a while and then wash them off. Then chew several fennel seeds (Foeniculum) or eat a parsley twig.

GROW GAULTHERIA As well as herbs traditionally used for teeth whitening, you can also try growing one rather uncommon plant, the fruits of which are used in chewing gum, toothpaste and mouth wash production. This plant is Gaultheria, of the Ericaceae family. It is an acidophilic plant that is related to blueberries and cranberries, hence the preference for low-nutrient acidic soils. The soil should also contain some peat, but should never be allowed to dry out. It is an interesting decorative bush for gardens, while the smaller types fit well into moorlands and rockeries. Gaultheria has pretty bulb-like leaves of white, pink or red color. The fruit is a red berry with a very strong, specific flavor, which not everybody may find is to their taste. The oil extracted from it, as has been said before, is used in the making of chewing gum, mouth wash and toothpaste. Extracts from the fruits are also used in perfumes and candy flavoring, and its leaves may also be used. Native Americans used the fruits for cooking and made a so-called mountain tea from its leaves. Gaultheria has anti-inflammatory, disinfectant and diuretic effects. It eases coughing, which makes it the perfect helper in flu and colds, and it treats arthritis, rheumatism and neuralgia. Should you not favor the fruits, you might at least appreciate this plant’s decorative function. It is often sold in autumn and winter as it has red fruits which remain on it throughout the winter and even as long as late spring.

PSYCHOSOMATIC CAUSES 1) Primary incisors – they represent parents, will and assertiveness. They are associated with the kidneys. A gap between the front teeth signifies issues with parents. In adult life, a gap between the front teeth signifies a feeling of uncertainty in a relationship. 2) Secondary incisors – they show our relationship to the number ones in our life: parents. Should the second tooth cross over the first one, it represents disagreements with the mother. If the second tooth aims forward, it signifies movement forward and assertiveness. If the second tooth is significantly smaller, the individual is submissive. The second tooth is associated with the kidneys and bladder. 3) Cuspids – they are associated with the changes an individual is undergoing in their life. They point at vitality and life energy. They go hand-in-hand with life development. Removing cuspids can diminish your appetite for life. Cuspids are related to the ovaries, the liver and gall bladder. 4) Primary bicuspids – they develop similarly to cuspids, and express creativity, originality and imagination. They are linked with the stomach, spleen and pancreas. 5) Secondary bicuspids – they point at our individual wishes and desires, which is essentially our ego. Should they be removed, the individual may become plagued with low self-esteem and submission to authorities. They are associated with the pancreas, spleen and stomach. 6) Primary molars – they show what kind of standing we desire in life. They are related to the need for love. They reflect past emotional traumas – even those from childhood, which may be the reason they tend to go bad first. Lower molars relate to the underbelly organs, hips and knees. They are also associated with the lungs and large intestine. 7) Secondary molars – they reflect our relationship to the outside world and how those closest to us react to us. If our relationships are going smoothly, it will show on these teeth. They are linked with the lungs and large intestine. 8) Wisdom teeth – they have an energetic relationship with the heart, hence the decision of many enlightened dentists not to remove those teeth without good reason: they are connected to our inner being.

Beautiful Hair Through Proper Diet

Have Beautiful and Healthy Hair Hair and nails are similar in constitution. Their basic building block is the organic protein keratin. Hairs and nails are

created through the process called keratinization, which is the sedimentation of keratin in the skin’s external layers.

K

eratin is a compound which provides the skin with protection. Biotin is crucial in the keratinization process as it helps developing tissue grow to completion. It affects hair growth and the formation of hair follicles, takes part in hair root grease regulation and limits hair loss. It also supports the overall health of the skin, mucous membranes, and enhances the quality of hair, skin and nails.

Herbs for Common Illnesses

Natural Beautifiers Common horsetail

Bamboo

(Equisetum arvense)

(Bambusa vulgaris)

Horsetail contains a vast amount of silicone, which makes it a strengthener of nails, hair and skin, and also has medicinal and diuretic properties. It improves blood vessel constitution and flexibility and is used in treating urinary system diseases and kidney stones. When applied externally, it speeds up wound healing and alleviates rheumatism and hemmorhoids, and when gargled it can help deal with tonsillitis, oral cavity inflammations, and windpipe catarrhs.

Bamboo contains silicic acid, which is better known as bamboo sugar. It is a good medicine for asthmatics, and also acts as a great prevention against cancer. Bamboo splints are harvested from the middle part of the bamboo stalk and have many recorded medicinal uses. They help detoxify the organism and alleviate acute fevers, spasms, and menstrual pain and bleeding. The sap is also often used to treat spasms, fever and childhood epilepsy. Bamboo leaves can be used as well. They are particularly effective in dealing with urinary tract inflammations, colds, fevers and lung inflammations.

How to? Infusion: 4 teaspoonfuls in a cup of water, boil for 10 to 15 minutes.

Colorful vegetables Whether you use chard, spinach, kale or broccoli, they all have one thing in common – they contain a high amount of vitamin A, iron, beta-carotene, folic acid and vitamin C. These are all essential components for maintaining healthy hair. It is not only fresh green vegetables that are important in keeping hair healthy, but also orange vegetables. Ideally, we should combine them. For example sweet potatoes, carrots or pumpkins are all great sources of beta-carotene. Apart from other benefits, it ensures that the scalp stays in shape and that hair does not dry or fall out.

86

Walnuts Common walnut fruits resemble a brain, and are the ideal food for supporting it. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, copper, zinc, potassium and folic acid. They are also a great source of vitamins B1, B6 and E. According to folk medicine, they have a positive effect on the human psyche and proper brain functioning. They also strengthen hair, nails and the skin, and are known for their antioxidant properties. According to traditional Chinese med-

icine, they help deal with asthma, strengthen the bowels and warm up the lungs. Beyond traditional uses they are used in the making of a mild-tasting oil with a high volume of omega-3 fatty acids.

Cannabis seeds They are high in nutrients and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the ideal 1:3 ratio. According to folk medicine the seeds work against aging, help in hair loss and support lactation. When peeled they can be added to salads, muesli and spreads, though they can be also eaten on their own or used in the making of bread and biscuits. The covered seeds are good for the making of cannabis milk. Cannabis seed oil is good in spreads or as a dietary sup-

plement in patients suffering from rheumatism, psoriasis, respiratory tract diseases or anemia.

Fish Fish contains healthy fats, which can slow down hair loss, moisturize the skin and soothe itches. It is not necessary to eat fish daily, but it does have a place in a balanced diet and should be eaten at least once a week. Vegetarians and vegans can replace fish with quality cold-pressed oils, for example apricot, cannabis, coconut or wheat sprout oil.

Eggs Raw eggs are a good addition to hair masks. All you need to do is whip

87

one egg and mix it with a spoonful of cold-pressed olive oil or wheat sprout oil and apply over the entire length of your hair. Rinse after 30 minutes. But be careful – use only lukewarm water so that you avoid cooking the eggs on your head! When eaten, eggs provide a supply of vitamin b12 and vitamin B7, also known as biotin (or vitamin H). That is the vitamin that improves hair growth and prevents excessive hair loss. Eggs also contain a lot of proteins, iron, zinc, selenium and sulphur, which are all essential minerals for maintaining a healthy scalp and hair.

Try out:

HEAVENLY HAIR MASKS Damaged hairs and nails need nourishment, which is best provided through regular oil hair masks. Before applying to the hair (in the form of a mask) or the nails (by wrapping), it is important to warm the oil up, but not over 40 °C / 104 °F. This is for all the important compounds to start working to their full capacity right away and to prevent them from having issues reaching the insides of hairs and skin. Cold-pressed oils are the highest quality. They retain their beneficial features only when cold, and when over-heated they lose many potential effects.

Pumpkin oil

Olive oil

Grape oil

It nourishes, regenerates, and is ideal for very dry and damaged hairs, or very dry hand hands.

It is amazing for hair that has a tendency to turn greasy fast. It has amazing antioxidant capabilities (50x higher than vitamin E, according to some studies).

Avocado oil

Unlike olive oil, avocado oil has the advantage of being more beneficial to gentle hair and sensitive skin. Argan oil

It comes from the seeds of a tree that grows only in Morocco. It is full of A and E vitamins and of omega-6 and omega-9 essential oils. It smooths out wrinkles, slows down skin aging and makes hair stronger.

As it contains a large amount of zinc, it is best used internally. The effects will be visible quickly. Primrose oil

Primrose is often an ingredient in food supplements, and not only of those designed for hair and nails; it contains valuable essential oils and lots of vitamin E. Almond oil

It has strong regenerative capabilities. It helps treat overly dry and frayed hairs.

Coconut oil

There is no better way to guard against the breaking and falling out of hair, or its becoming frayed. Macadamia oil

It makes the hair supple and hydrated. Use it if you have rough, damaged and non-pliant hair. The same effect can be achieved on damaged and dry hand hands.

Jojoba oil

It regenerates damaged hair and is suited for those with greasy hair.

Do You Know How to Protect Yourself?

Prevent Tick Bites and Lyme Disesase In this season there are plenty of unwelcome intruders waiting for us on

every step. The main cause is the last winter being too mild and failing to kill them off, and so they multiply and bother us more and more. Luckily, we know just how one can protect oneself from ticks in a natural and effective way.

T

1/ Make a DIY repellent. Mix beer yeast (if you don’t have it, just use a normal one from the grocery store), fresh garlic and flax oil. Cover the entire body with this mixture, and especially the legs as far as the knees.

icks can be found all over forests, fields and meadows. Every year the media tells us about the dangers of the diseases ticks carry in their bite. The only solution offered is vaccination, yet the manufacturers tend to obfuscate the negative side effects that may express themselves after the application of the vaccination. An effective prevention is hard to find. So how do we make ticks avoid us? First and foremost, keep in mind that not even the best recipe will ever be completely tick-proof. Either way, we can certainly lower the risks a tick bite carries into the human body, and by a large measure.

2/ If the previous tip seems a bit too much, you can also use a variety of natural means. Some of those entail using repellent herbs like lavender, mint, rosemary or cedar. Any one of these herbs (or a combination of them) can work well in the making of a strong infusion, which can be then used to cover our body before going outside. Once again, this should be used especially on the legs.

Herbs for Common Illnesses

TINCTURE FOR BORRELIOSIS

An even easier way is to purchase these herbs’ essential oils. A home-made repellent can then be made like this: add 10 drops of lavender, 5 drops of rosemary, 5 drops of cedar and 2 drops of mint essential oils into 1 dl / 3.5 Fl oz quality cold-pressed oil. Mix properly, pour into a spray container and use on the entire body.

Ingredients: Several one-year old roots, pure alcohol Preparation: Clean the roots properly, cut them up into small pieces and place them into a clean glass. Pour a quality alcohol into it; ideally pure alcohol, vodka or brandy with at least 60% alcohol content. Put the glass on a windowsill and let it infuse for at least three weeks. It is also good to give it a shake every once in a while. After three weeks, filter the tincture through linen and pour it into a clean glass. Store ideally in the dark in a temperature not over 15 °C / 59 °F. Use three times a day for at least a month.

3/ If you are purchasing essential oils, give tea tree oil a try as well. It can be used both as a natural repellent on various places on the body (without the necessity of diluting it in oil; it can be applied directly to the skin), but it also serves as perfect disinfectant once a tick has already attached itself to the body. After removing the parasite, put a single drop of tea tree oil on the wound. It can completely clean the wound and kill off dangerous microorganisms.

My Herbs Tip:

Fuller’s teasel (Dipsacus sativus)

4/ Wash yourself properly with regular soap before entering the forest; the smell repels ticks. This effect can be further enhanced by applying a strong walnut leaf infusion on the legs.

It has more or less the same medicinal effects

as wild teasel. Both these herbs can be used in the form of a tincture, ideally in combination

Have you heard of the common herb called wild teasel (Dipsacus sylvestris)? It is a tall biennial herb often used for decoration in dried bouquets. This plant is a great means of dealing with borreliosis, known as lyme disease. Wild teasel grows especially where there is enough water – by streams, ponds, roads, on grazing lands, sides of brushes, forests and dams. It thrives in nourishing clay, earthy and stony soils, ideally rich in calcium and nitrogen. In autumn, most of the plant’s strength is concentrated in the root. And since the root is used for medicinal purposes the most, the end of summer is the ideal time for picking wild teasel.

hance the cure. Suitable enhancements are juniper or pine.

Common teasel (Dipsacus fullonum)

It blooms in July and August. It contains bitter substances, iridoids, saponins, caffeic acid derivates and glycoside. It supports the body’s

self-cleansing mechanisms through sweat, urine and bile, and is traditionally used in treating

rheumatism and skin illnesses. It is nowadays considered to be a borreliosis medicine and

Apart from treating borreliosis, wild teasel is also used in natural medicine in treating rheumatic pains. It also helps deal with fissured skin, painful nipples or eczema. Externally, it is supplemental medicine for skin cancer; internally for gastrointestinal cancer. It also cures stomach and duodenal ulcers.

has also been recorded as an effective counter-agent in treating viral infections like herpes.

The tea is very bitter and activates the immune system. Pour 250 ml / 8.5 Fl oz over one spoonful of dried root and infuse for at least ten minutes. Drink three cups a day.

Get Rid of Canker Sores Canker sores are an inconvenience that many people encounter throughout their lives. They are small painful sores that form inside the oral cavity. They first express themselves through itching and a burning sensation. But how to deal with them? Do you know how to treat them?

C

A PAINFUL INFECTION Canker sores are often accompanied by severe pain during eating and speaking. Their size and numbers vary from case to case. They are usually relatively small, white to yellowish and can cause people genuinely unbearable pain. Without proper treatment, they can last on the mucosa for one to three weeks. They emerge in the oral cavity – on the tongue, palate, gums, lips or cheeks. They are not dangerous on their own, but can have an unpleasant effect when doing daily tasks, as they cause a fair amount of pain. They can limit food and drink consumption and be bothersome during kissing. There is a variety of home remedies for the prevention or at least quick treatment of canker sores in your mouth.

anker sores emerge as result of stress and the immune system’s reaction to bacteria naturally living in the mouth. Unlike herpes, canker sores are not infectious, however there is a myriad of reasons for their formation: if you have a badly fitting tooth prosthesis, a broken tooth, a sharp filling, or if you use an improper toothbrush or often eat irritative foods. Foods belonging to this group are spicy meals, pepper, tomatoes and citruses. Canker sores are also common in children. They are a symptom of the socalled primoinfection, which is an organism’s response to its first encounter with a virus.

Seven Herbs for the Immune System

Boost Your Immune System Whether or not we are healthy really comes down to just how effective

our immune system is, meaning how capable we are of preventing negative things from entering our inner core, even our life in general. Let us learn to protect ourselves with a little help from nature.

A

mong commonly grown herbs and vegetables we can find a variety of treasures which are worth eating throughout the entire year, and not only when we’re sick.

The quality of said foods is also very important. If you buy vegetables grown the usual way, treated with synthetic fertilizers and sprays, oftentimes harvested and stored inappropriately, they will have a completely different vitamin and mineral content than vegetables which you have grown yourself or bought from local farmers who grow their crops ecologically. These vegetables are harvested at the right time, meaning they go through a natural process, thanks to which they can form in themselves the materials we need to boost our immunity. If you’re not against uncommon plants, try ginger, which you can easily grow in a pot in your window. So what are the plants that play a major role in strengthening our immune systems?

Always follow the seasons – eat what is currently available at local producers. You can buy many citrus fruits from large commercial plantations during winter, but they are usually of low quality and have likely been treated with synthetic products. Instead, try to focus on crops which can be stored for a longer time, or pickled. Fermented vegetables, garlic, onion, horseradish and other ingredients that can be stored in the pantry or a cold cellar are all great choices.

Purple coneflower

Tip: FLU TINCTURE

(Echinacea purpurea)

Bottle 100 g / 3.5 oz roots, 113 g / 4 oz blooms or 125g / 4.5 oz leaves

It is one of the best-known and strongest immune system stimulants. This plant can also put white blood cells (lymphocytes) into order. They are then capable of absorbing the cause of infection directly into the body and create antigens at the same time. Many tests have also shown that a half-year or yearlong concentrated cure with purple coneflower can boost the immune system much more than medicine designed for this purpose. If you’re already sick, it is advisable to start using the coneflower right away. Do so from the beginning of the illness until its ending, and then stop using coneflower. It is one of the few plants that has a strong antibiotic effect. It works not only against bacteria, but against viruses as well. It can preventatively protect the body from the cold and infections of the sinus and bronchus, and even treats them. It also has the same effect in chronic bladder infections, female genital issues, prostate problems and lymph node inflammations.

Rose hip

Healthy Aloe (Aloe vera)

Aloe juice or gel can be used both externally and internally. On the outside it can help us deal with burns, frostbite, rashes or incessant itching, while on the inside it can perfectly cleanse the body of toxins and poison. Thanks to that, the organism is then more resistant to attacks from the outside. Aloe also has powerful antibacterial, antiviral and anti-yeast effects. It adjusts digestion and gut bacteria, and thanks to that, it is considered a very effective immune-boosting herb.

(Fructus cynosbati) Tip: ALOE VERA SYRUP

Mix 100 g / 3.5 oz aloe leaf gel in

a blender. Cook the juice with 100 g / 3.5 oz over mild heat for

about then minutes, while giving it the occasional stir. Then pour it

into a glass and keep it in a cold spot. The product should then last

for about three months. Have half a spoonful of the syrup mixed with water every morning to stimulate the organism.

Scientists and experts consider rose hip a complete equal to its counterparts in the pharmacy when it comes to treating flu and colds; its effectiveness has been even proven in independent clinical studies. It is thus completely pointless to buy these preparations in the pharmacy when help is so close. Rose hip grows on every corner, and every herbal or health food store has it at the ready. Rose hip contains a large volume of vitamin C, calcium and rutin, which is an almost magical combination for paradentosis. Vitamin C supports the immune system and protects the body from infection as well.

Tip: ROSE HIP MARMALADE

Halve the hard, fresh rose hips and rid them of hairs. Cook them in

a bit of water and then mix them.

Then add 1 kg / 35 oz rose hip mix, 400 g / 14 oz sugar and cook for

three minutes while constantly stirring the mixture. When you’re done, bottle and sterilize it in 80

°C / 176 °F. Spread the marmalade on bread or use it in the making of rose hip sauce.

Common Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides)

This is a vitamin C packed superfood. Even clinical tests have shown that its fruits, juice and extract affect not only the functioning of the stomach, pancreas and duodenum, but also blood formation, and even have antimicrobial capabilities. The oil has strong regenerating properties – it cures wounds and supports digestive fluid secretion. It is universal medicine which can serve both as amazing prevention and brilliant treatment. Buckthorn fruits contain a large amount of C, B, A, D and K vitamins. It also contains the highest volume of vitamin E of all plants. It even equals carrot in carotene volume, which stimulates the formation of vitamin A synthesis.

Tip: COLD BUCKTHORN JUICE

Add 1 l / 34 Fl oz water to 1 l / 34 Fl oz ground fruits and infuse for

24 hours. After decanting the mix for a final liter / 34 Fl oz, add 1 kg

Common Nettle

Nasturtium

Remember this article when you finish it, because you will be rushing out to meet the first spring sunrays to pick as much nettle as you can. There is no better herb for a complete cleansing of the organism. Nettle cleans the blood and rids the body of destructive materials. Thanks to this complex process it can “clean” us so well that the immune system will kick back into action and function the way it is supposed to. Nettles also contain a high number of minerals – calcium, potassium, silicone and iron. It also contains the C and B vitamins.

Rich in vitamins and minerals, nasturtium is also well-known for its antibiotic capabilities. It destroys streptococci, staphylococci and salmonella. It has also been said that it can effectively combat even the golden staphylococcus.

Get Rid of Skin Issues Naturally

Treat Your Skin The skin is the body’s largest organ with an average size of

1.7 m2 / 18.3 sq. ft. It has thermoregulation capabilities, an important secreting function, and fulfills immunological and sensory roles – pressure, pain, cold and heat.

E

czemic changes are induced by pathological immune system reactions in individuals with genetic predispositions, irritated by various materials in the external environment, medicine, chemicals and so on. Skin changes are similar among the different eczemic diseases. What comes about

during the acute phase is a reddening of the afflicted areas, itching, swelling, sometimes blister formation and, in the chronic phase, the skin is dry, rough, scaly and has a tendency to crack and fissure, which invites bacterial infections with festering complications.

109

STAY CALM

BATHS FOR ECZEMA

It is typical of eczemas that they get worse after a viral or bacterial disease, or following acute stress. That is why it is good to stay in both physical and mental shape, to take care of one’s body, to keep a check on dieting habits and especially to stay in a good mood. Another eczemic problem is that the skin tends to be dehydrated, dry, itchy and vulnerable to infections. Even washing with water can be unpleasant. The role of dieting in all this is huge, as is drinking regularly. Our general inner state and its pH exert a great influence over all the body’s processes. We tend to be too acidic: especially white sugars, white flour, smoked meat, and stress – all these bring about inner sourness, which then manifests in our moods. An acidic pH is a suitable environment for disease and inflammation formation.

Dry eczema:

wash with an infusion of mallow herbs. Especially common mallow, flax seeds or bladderwrack. Take a large spoonful of the herb and pour ½ l / 17 Fl oz boiling water, infuse for 20 minutes and decant. Wash the afflicted areas 2 to 3 times a day. wash with infusion of burdock or pot marigold: 1 large spoonful of the dried herb should be poured over with ½ l / 17 Fl oz boiling water, infused for 15 minutes and decanted. The afflicted areas are to be washed twice daily. Festering eczema:

wash the areas with infusion of wild marrow or agrimony. Pour 1 l / 35 Fl oz boiling water over a handful of the dried herb, infuse for 15 minutes and decant. Wash the afflicted areas in the lukewarm infusion once a day for 10-15 minutes. Arm and hand eczema:

HERBAL TEAS FOR ECZEMA Cleansing Tea

Mix 40 g / 1.5 oz chicory tops, 20 g / 0.8 oz dandelion root and leaves, 20 g / 0.8 oz restharrow, 10 g / 0.5 oz viola tops and 10 g / 0.5 oz knotgrass tops. Pour ½ l / 17 Fl oz boiling water over the mixture and infuse for 20 minutes. Put the tea into a thermos bottle and sip throughout the day. ’ Nettle Tea for Children s Nervous Eczema

Pour 150 ml / 5 Fl oz over 1 spoonful of the dried leaf and infuse for 10 minutes, then decant and add sugar according to preference. Drink three times a day. For Festering Eczema

Drink tea from 40 g / 1.5 oz blooming viola tops, 40 g / 1.5 oz nettle and 40 g / 1.5 oz red clover. Pour 150 ml / 5 Fl oz over 1 spoonful of the mixture, infuse for 10 minutes. Drink three times a day. Herbs that Support the Liver for Dry Eczemas

Herbs for Common Illnesses

Psoriasis (Psoriasis vulgaris)

Psoriasis is a skin disease that arises from genetic predisposition in an acute or chronic form. It is one of the most common and oldest described skin diseases. It was first mentioned in Corpus Hippocraticum which was released 100 years after the death of the doctor and philosopher Hippocrates (460-377BC). Only Ferdinand von Hebra clearly defined psoriasis in Vienna and described its various clinical forms.

of their environment, keeps their distance and oftentimes deliberately isolates themselves from society in an attempt to hide the illness. Many people believe it is infectious and are squeamish around the affected persons. It is therefore nothing surprising that psoriatics often suffer from anxiety, depression, insomnia, neurosis and even sexual dysfunction. The disease can appear at any age and becomes the person’s lifelong partner. The critical period is the one of growing up, as hormones play a major role and the person encounters new forms of stress. The mental state can also be very fragile at this time. Stress, impatience, depression and bad moods can further worsen the state of psoriasis.

IT HURTS THE SOUL Psoriasis is an illness which doesn’t threaten a person’s life, but it can provide them with many serious and annoying complications. Issues with self-presentation, relationships, job seeking, self-realization and the unending search for an effective medicine or treatment method all affect the person’s quality of life. A person with psoriasis notices the dismissive attitude

POWER OF NATURE AHA (alpha-hydroxyl acids) work on several levels. They are applicable as a “peel” – they remove sticky and dead skin scales and open up space for new ones. They cause a signal to be sent to the basal layer – the lowest layer of the skin – to produce more new cells and to send them to the surface. Cell regeneration is sped up, material exchange in the skin is activated and the epidermis becomes well-perfused. Besides, fruit acids support the formation of new collagen and elastic fibers which have a dominant influence on the flexibility and strength of the skin and help in keeping it moisturized. AHA acids are capable of “liberating” fat and ligament cell membranes from cellular poisons, and they also “repair” them, releasing the knotted fibers and returning them to their proper, sound structure. Fruity acids can effectively deal with skin issues and improve the state of the skin in general. AHA acids protect collagen and elastin fibers from so-called free radicals, aggressive molecules which destroy cells.

112

HERBS FOR PSORIASIS

Sunflower

Lavender

(Helianthus)

(Lavandula angustifolia)

Sunflower oil regenerates the state of the skin by returning the epidermis to its former density, thus “ repairing” all skin damage. The oil easily permeates it and supports its perfusion. It softens the skin and makes it suppler. Even sensitive skin takes well to it. It helps calm eczema through its high vitamin E content and has a great effect in treating and regenerating the skin.

It has disinfectant and strong regenerative effects, it refreshes the skin and provides it with flashiness and vitality. It also regulates skin grease production and harmonizes the epidermic metabolism.

Wheat sprouts The life-giving effects of materials contained in a wheat sprout are multiplied in its oil, in which many of those materials actually reach the highest concentration. Besides, those materials enable active components to penetrate deep layers of the epidermis where they are then easily processed. Wheat sprout extract is an important regenerative and revitalizing medicine for dry and rough skin. It makes the rough skin supple and soft and protects skin cells from free radicals.

Rosemary

(Rosmarinus officinalis) Rosemary extract functions like an antioxidant, as its main functional compound is the natural rosemary acid. It mildly stimulates and perfuses the skin. It has cleansing and antibacterial effects. It regulates the production of skin grease and harmonizes the metabolism.

113

Herbs for Common Illnesses

Sesame seeds

Almond tree fruits

Their pure oil is used to treat dry and normal skin, to prevent stretchmarks, as baby oil and for scar massage. It contains 85-88% essential oils, amino acids contained in natural proteins, B1, B12 and PP vitamins, potassium and trace elements – manganese, iron, tin, nickel. The extract has strong stimulating and hydrating effects. It helps regenerate the skin and makes it more resistant to environmental factors.

Sweet almonds can be pressed for a very soft oil rich in a variety of biologically active compounds. It contains a multitude of vitamins and oleic acid, which belongs among unsaturated fatty acids, and it also contains alpha-tocopherol, which is a natural antioxidant. It has strong regenerative effects and is absorbed easily and quickly. It doesn’t instigate any allergic reactions and calms the skin. It calms itchiness and irritability, and rejuvenates rough, cracked and scaly dry skin. It endows the skin with a natural silkiness and smoothness.

114

Coconut

(Cocos nucifera) Coconut oil is processed from freshly harvested coconut pulp. It contains A, C and E vitamins, which provide the skin with self-defense capabilities. Apart from that, it makes the skin softer, heals it and regenerates. It can suppress negative effects of sunrays. It is close to the esters found naturally in skin grease. It has an easy time penetrating the skin, makes it soft (without leaving a sticky feeling) and covers it with a protective layer. It has deep hydrating effects and protects the skin from drying out. Coconut oil can also replenish cell energy, making the skin more flexible and healthier. It stays on the skin for a while as it itself is quite resistant. After application the skin is soft and gentle, moisturized and covered in a protective film.

Tea tree

(Melaleuca alternifolia) Its effects have been used for centuries by first white colonizers of Australia in dealing with various injuries. Tea tree oil is known for its antiseptic and disinfectant effects. It has a strong capability to permeate damaged skin and its effect is strongest in bloody, festering wounds. It does not irritate the skin or damage cells even when used in the long-term.

Sandalwood (Santalum album)

It is an important part of many oils, perfumes and cosmetic products. Its beneficial effects are unmistakable: it makes the skin suppler, nourished and strong, especially dry and dehydrated skin. It calms skin inflammations and relieves reddened skin. It refreshes the epidermis and has positive effects on it even when it is irritated. It has antiseptic and cleansing capacities and regulates the formation of skin grease.

The Big Boogeyman of the Health World

Balance Your Cholesterol Levels The idea that by lowering our cholesterol, we will reap gains to our heath has been prevalent in medicine for several decades now. Recently, it has been shown that this is not exactly true and that the real mechanisms behind this are actually quite complicated. Cholesterol is absolutely

essential to the human body and the organism needs it – however, only in the right amount.

Ch

olesterol is one of the most controversial nutrients in the history of medicine. It is true that when it is in higher concentrations in the blood, it certainly brings about a variety of health risks. This is especially relevant in the area of cardiovascular disease.

cholesterol in the blood, it tends to sediment in the cell walls. This process is called atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. This process leads to a narrowing of blood vessels, through which blood then has problems flowing. Plates of sediments also often crack, and when this happens, blood clots in the damaged spot. These phenomena can lead to a complete closure of a blood vessel, which can lead to, for example, heart attacks or stroke, depending on where the cell has been cut off. The level of cholesterol is one of the undeniable risk factors leading to cardiovascular problems, especially ischemic heart disease. However, it is important to keep in mind that we ourselves can affect this level.

GOOD SERVANT, BAD MASTER Cholesterol, which our bodies need for the making of hormones and vitamin D, is a compound not unlike fat, and is part of every one of our cells. Cholesterol helps the body process fats, and is important in the creating of cell membranes. It is also the basic structural unit of nerves and brain cells. Should we have an overabundance of

Herbs for Common Illnesses

GOOD VS. BAD

IMPROPER FOODS:

Cholesterol in the human body is divided into two subtypes: “good” cholesterol, HDL – high density lipoprotein, and “bad” cholesterol, LDL, low density lipoprotein. Technically they are the vehicles of blood cholesterol. HDL, the high density lipoprotein transports cholesterol from the blood into the liver, protecting arteries from sedimentation. A high ratio of “good” cholesterol therefore shows a strong capability to secrete redundant cholesterol from the organism. LDL, the low density lipoprotein, is formed in the liver and leads to sedimentation of redundant cholesterol in artery walls and blood vessels. We should essentially aim to keep a high level of HDL cholesterol and a low level of LDL cholesterol.

Smoked and fat meat, intestines, caviar Salami, pate, sausage Reinforced fats, margarine, lard Large amount of butter Sour cream, fat cheese, sour cream, yogurt Cream-filled cakes, whipped cream Mayonnaise In choosing proper foods it is important to keep healthy options in mind while shopping, and to keep to the rules which allow for decreasing cholesterol in the bloodstream in the long term. First accomplishments come after a prolonged period of time – usually after around two to three months. It is important to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables since most have a low energy content, yet a high amount of vitamins, minerals and fiber, which helps us not only to lower cholesterol levels, but also supports digestion and have a positive effect on peristalsis in the bowels. Whole-grain bread also contains a lot of fiber, and as such should completely replace white bread in our diet. It is better to use fresh herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary) for seasoning instead of lots of salt. You can have some sweet foods, but limit your intake of cheap chocolate, biscuits and various icings – opt for a square of quality chocolate with a high cocoa content instead, whole-grain cookies, or very high-quality muesli bars.

RISK FACTORS More than two thirds of the population struggle with high blood cholesterol. It is important to keep in mind that an increased level of cholesterol in the blood has no visible symptoms. Its levels in the circulatory system can only be proven by medical examination. There is also a myth that only overweight people struggle with cholesterol, when in fact there are more factors affecting its levels in the blood. Other risk factors are high blood pressure, diabetes, lack of exercise, improper diet habits, smoking and genetic predisposition. While the last one is unavoidable, the rest’s influence on our body can be significantly limited by following a healthy lifestyle.

EXERCISING FOR HEALTH

WE ARE WHAT WE EAT

Another way of preventing cardiovascular disease is exercise. Exercise helps keep the heart healthy – especially by means of lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL cholesterol and lowering LDL cholesterol levels. It also helps us fight against being overweight or obese. Every person should devote at least 30 minutes of their day to exercise. Statistics show, however, that only 18% of Europeans, for instance, keep to this habit.

One of the basic steps we can take in bettering our cholesterol levels is changing our dieting habits. There are certain foods we should be aware of that can help prevent issues with high cholesterol. PROPER FOODS: Fish, chicken, lean pork and beef Olive oil, flax oil Sour milk products Eggs (in a limited number) Walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds Fruit and vegetables

PRODUCTS FOR BLOOD CHOLESTEROL MAINTENANCE Citruses They adjust blood cholesterol especially through their high vitamin C content. Common varieties are tangerines, oranges and grapefruits, which are all abundant in stores right now. Other herbs or superfoods which con-

tain this vitamin are good as well, for example common sea buckthorn, dog rose or goji. Those products can readjust cholesterol to normal levels.

Chokeberries Dried chokeberries are applicable here, and are also a preventive and medical means in dealing

with atherosclerosis. They also lower cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. Furthermore,

they adjust the metabolism and are effective in treating stomach inflammation. Eleuthero It works as a natural tonic, adaptogen and harmonizer. It has a positive effect on both blood pressure and blood sugar. It lowers levels of

“bad” cholesterol and slows down the scleroti-

zation of blood vessels. It can be also purchased in the form of a supplement, and its tincture is similarly useful.

Avocado It contains fatty acids and other compounds

that stimulate the circulatory system. It also lowers cholesterol levels effectively.

Unlike low blood pressure, those with high blood pressure can be active and happy. They may get angry easily, but they are quick to recover. However, if blood pressure is too high, what follows are headaches, heart palpitations, tinnitus and eye pressure. Reasons for high blood pressure are varied. Go for a pleasant walk in the forest when stressed. Any form of pressure or stress increase blood pressure so avoid getting hot-headed.

Lower your intake of salt. Remove the salt dispenser from your dining table. We have a tendency to add salt to meals without even first trying it.

Limit all nutrients which contain sodium (like monosodium glutamate).

The opposite of sodium is potassium, which is an important part of our diet. Should we lack it, the body starts to stockpile sodium, which is dangerous and can lead to an increase in blood pressure. Having enough potassium in our diet can help our body get rid of sodium. Sources of potassium include dried yeast, dried apricots, parsley, lovage, wheat bran, molasses, raisins, plums, peaches, currants, potatoes, spinach, walnuts, whole grains and cauliflower.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE – DEAL WITH IT NOW High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can be found in over a billion people globally, and cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) problems ail a growing number of the population. Heart infarction and stroke are among the most common causes of death in Europe. Those most at risk are the elderly and those who have multiple chronic diseases, like these of the cardiovascular or respiratory systems. Those who have some form of metabolic illness or use several types of medications should be careful as well. NATURAL MEDICINE So what exactly are the problematic aspects of hypertension? Blood pressure works against blood vessel walls, especially in the arteries. It takes place because the heart pushes blood into the aorta, and blood pressure rises and falls depending on the heart cycle. How high the pressure rises is affected by the strength of the heart’s expulsion of blood, by the state of the aorta’s walls, and resistance to blood coming from smaller blood vessels. The human body keeps blood pressure within certain boundaries. Its

Limit your intake of very fatty meals.

A sufficient intake of calcium helps prevent high blood pressure. Sources of calcium are dark green leafy vegetables, carrots, parsley, whole grains and sesame.

Vegetarians have objectively healthier blood pressure, so consider limiting how much meat you eat.

When suffering from high blood pressure it is not advisable to drink coffee, black tea, alcohol, red wine, chamomile tea, celery (neither raw or juice) or fatty meals.

Eat three spoonfuls of beer ferment or dried yeast daily for two weeks.

To support heart functioning during times of high blood pressure, take a spoonful of dill seeds, divide it into thirds and chew them throughout the day. Drink some quality green tea afterwards.

Mix red beetroot (or sugar beet) juice 1:1 with honey, keep it cold and use 1-2 spoonfuls three times a day.

Cook three to four wedges of garlic for five minutes in 750 ml / 25 Fl oz water. Drink one cup daily. Do not drink if you have stomach problems.

HERBAL TEAS FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE •

Yarrow decreases blood pressure by widening peripheral blood vessels. Pour 200 ml / 7 Fl oz boiling water over two teaspoonfuls of yarrow, infuse for ten minutes, decant and drink twice a day.

Dandelion leaves widen the blood vessels slightly and support kidney functioning, which in turn lowers blood pressure and prevents heart attacks. Pour 200 ml / 7 Fl oz boiling water over two teaspoonfuls of dandelion leaves, infuse for 10 minutes, decant and drink three times a day for a lengthy period of time.

Mix 20 g / 1 oz of St. John’s wort, 20 g / 1 oz yarrow tops, 20 g / 1 oz hawthorn blooms, 20 g / 1 oz shepherd’s purse and 20 g / 1 oz centaury. Pour 150 ml / 5 Fl oz cool water over one teaspoonful of the mixture and infuse for 10 to 12 hours. Then pour 150 ml / 5 Fl oz over one spoonful of the mix, infuse for ten minutes and decant.

Get Relief From Joint Pain Diseases of the muscular system are beginning to ail more and more people;

even statistics show that they are one of the most frequent causes of disability. What can we do for our joints to overturn this negative trend?

T

he human body moves by means of joints. Altogether, we have over a hundred joints that enable bodily motion. Movement is joy, but it also exposes joints to friction and wear and as such it is important to nourish them specifically. Joints are made of cartilage, but also of subchondral bone, bones of balls and sockets, the joint capsule, tendons and the synovial membrane. And all this is made of collagen, thanks to which our bodies are not liquid, despite being 70% water. CARTILAGE ON STAGE Cartilage is primarily made up of collagen and enables fluid motion of the joint. It forms the area where friction takes place between the different parts of joint bones. To limit the amount of friction, the joint contains syno-

vial fluid, which is pushed out of the cartilage surface during motion, lubricating the area. Another important function of the cartilage is protecting the joint bone from exertion and impacts, serving as a suppressor. It has to resist a lot of force as running and jumping creates pressure of hundreds of kilograms per square centimeter. Repeated impacts result in microfissures of the cartilage which can lead to its becoming damaged. It progressively loses its strength and flexibility and what follows is its defibering, destruction, thinning and complete dissolution. Serious cartilage injury brings about joint tenderness and osteoarthritis, which is the result of cartilage regeneration failure. In order for it to retain the fluid which nourishes and regenerates it, it requires a strong and undamaged arching collagen structure.

COLLAGEN PEPTIDES

UNPLEASANT ARTHRITIS

Discoveries of the mechanism and the progression of cartilage destruction lead scientists to look around for something that could simply fix the joints. They found out that it is first necessary to regenerate the collagen structure of the cartilage – to replace collagen with collagen. They found out that using collagen to nourish joints increases collagen synthesis rates by 100%, meaning twice as much, just after eleven days of use. For collagen to be usable by the organism it has to be used in the form of enzymatically-prepared collagen inlays, also known as collagen peptides, which stimulate the formation of new collagen fibers. They then form an arching structure, which is the basic organic material forming connective tissue of the muscular system – bones, joints, cartilages, tendons, ligaments etc. Should we aim to regenerate the functioning of connective tissues and cartilages, it is necessary to do so by means of collagen peptides which support formation of new collagen fibers. A connective tissue nourished with collagen can develop healthily, which in turn makes it more resistant to encumbrance. An advantage of collagen peptides is that they can be used consistently, as they have no negative side effects, not even on the digestive system. 70% of cartilage mass is formed by water bound in a proteoglycan gel kept in the network of collagen fibers. Hence the importance of drinking regularly, ideally 0.03 l / 1 Fl oz fresh water per kilogram / 35 oz of a person’s weight for hydration of joint cartilage, as the body expresses dehydration by pain, including joint pain. It is very important to drink enough also so as to ensure that released metabolites (waste) are flushed out easily. As water contains cell information and has memory, it is best to drink it fresh. The body can then easily rid itself of waste materials. Apart from that, the water is readily available to the body, since tea and juices have to be first dissolved in the stomach. Coffee, for example, releases water, but not urea. Coke contains phosphates which take away valuable minerals, like calcium. We should diligently and regularly drink throughout the day. Kidneys can effectively process only 200-300 ml / 7-10 Fl oz of a liquid an hour. This renders drinking “ahead” or “to make up for not drinking” pointless.

Most people believe that osteoarthritis, also known as rheum, affects only elderly people. However, that is not so. Its formation and development can be intercepted at a relatively young age. Causes of the illness can be simple – a bit of extra weight or even the wrong kind of exercise. The reasons for joint pain caused by osteoarthritis can be varied. Genetic predispositions, metabolic disorders, joint fractures, recurring minor injuries from sport or manual labor or constant joint exertion. The unpleasant pain can also be caused by being overweight, having malfunctioning kidneys or joints that formed imperfectly – X-shaped knees or O-shaped legs. It can manifest itself at a young age, even around the twenty year mark. It is the failure of joint cartilage regeneration. Osteoarthritis damages the joints the more we weigh our joints down through sport or improper exercise. The disease can be identified through several symptoms: the most obvious ones are especially joint pain during exercise, sensitivity to the cold and weather, muscle pain, drastic difficulties with moving, or even night pains. Another common symptom is the so-called winding-up pain; stiffness which manifests especially in the morning after waking up, or after long periods of resting. The disease tends to develop very slowly and can sometimes take several years. In the event that the inflammation is not identified and treated early, it can lead to degradation of cartilage mass and damage to other joint tissue, especially joint bone, which can start falling apart in terminal stages and there may be no other option than to surgically install an endoprosthetis.

PREVENTING ARTHRITIS How to prevent the illness? Listen to your body. Exercise, but with caution! Swimming, fast walking, certain yogic exercises or cycling can be good options. Wear shoes with soft soles to soften impacts from walking, and eat healthily. This will also help to prevent you from becoming overweight.

SPIRITUAL CAUSES OF JOINT DISEASE KNEE PAIN – GONARTHROSIS In relation to the knee joint we deal with the topic of humbleness. Kneeling is a gesture we use to express submission. It is how we meet religious authorities and some time ago it was the proper way of showing respect to a monarch.

of the mixture in cold water for six hours, then cook it for ten minutes and let it infuse more. Drink four times a day. Or, we can opt for a mixture of the same amount of knot-grass, nettle, horsetail and goldenrod, or a tea of bearberry leaves, birch, corn stigma, couch-grass rhizomes and licorice root.

It is striking that modern people tend to kneel less. As such, it is no surprise that the gesture of kneeling and the humbleness associated with it have disappeared from our lives, whereas the number of knee problems is growing, also in severity.

HIP PAIN – COXARTHROSIS

The state of knee joints affects the functioning of the kidneys, the functioning and health of which is associated with the quality of interpersonal relationships. Their functioning often tends to be disrupted by recurring infections of the urinal tract. Apart from drinking water, a good way of supporting the kidneys and aiding the expulsion of urine is drinking herbal tea: from bearberry leaves, blueberry leaves, briar, birch leaves, horsetail, restharrow root, root and tops of garden parsley, flax seeds, goldenrod, couch-grass or nasturtium.

Hip joint pains usually stem from osteoarthritis and prevent such steps, signalling to those they trouble that significant life advances are over. Those who are affected advance through life at the cost of great pain. Their aim should be to grow accustomed to obligatory relaxation, admit to themselves that progress and movement are difficult, and instead switch over to inner movements from physical ones. Admitting that the possibility to move forward in this respect is lost, the outer goals grow ever distant. Yet there is still the opportunity for the affected to realize that there is still the option to set inner goals during this relaxation period, and also the chance to accomplish them.

An equal mixture of bearberry leaves, salvia and horsetail has been met with success, too. Infuse a spoonful

The hip joint is the base for every step, the home of our journeys and advances, small or big, good or bad. Every path begins with a single step, and so does every digression.

The solution is calmness. If it is deep enough, it becomes a form of motion on its own, an inner motion. Hip joint health is associated with the gallbladder and the liver. Liver malnourishment requires bitter herbs like menyanthes, wormwood, yellow gentian and centaury. Maintaining liver function can be also accomplished by dandelion, agrimony, wormwood, ground ivy, milk thistle, artichoke, fumitory, chicory, marigold, couch-grass rhizome, horehound, veronica, elecampane root, buckbean or centaury. The following mixture works well: four pieces of agrimony tops, two pieces of dandelion root with tops and bloom of marigold and two pieces of horehound and lemon balm tops. Drink this tea four times a day.

ARM AND HAND PAIN – RISARTHROSIS Diseases of arm joints are associated with a decreasing capability in connecting on the touching, grasping and comprehension levels: the afflicted person has problems grasping life. It hurts to be manipulated, the capacity for interaction is painfully diminished, painful wrists and hand joints call attention to the topics of releasing and letting go.

gonarthrosis, in which the ring finger can be sensitive. The middle section of the left ring finger is connected with heart function. Little finger: a crooked little finger speaks volumes of the state of our genitalia: in women of their uterus, in men of their prostate. State of the uterus means its position and musculature. In men it is the question of prostate size and urinary problems.

The afflicted has to admit to themselves that they cannot grasp something and so they clearly have to let go of something, to release oneself from all manipulation. By doing so, they leave the outward life for the sake of the inward one, seeking inner peace and calm through manipulation. So what do the specific fingers signify? Thumb: thumb joints represent the head and the neck, chest, loin and tailbone (the entire spine). Here it is important to pay attention to the spine.

SPINE PAINS – SPONDYLARTHROSIS A crookedness in the person’s inner standing will sooner or later project itself into bodily posture. Scoliosis is clearly the expression of constant evasion; a stiff spine signifies too much pride, inflexibility and lack of humbleness of spirit.

Index finger: left index finger joints express the health state of the spleen and pancreas organs; the right index finger is the liver.

The cause of locally blocked spine muscles from a worsening in the functioning of the kidneys – which can lead to spinal disc herniations – is a malfunction of the flow of life energy in lines along the astral body’s various organs. Every vertebra is connected with an organ through astral lines. Should a person conduct a short-term but strong “evasion” in the mental sphere, the energetic discharge shifts through astral lines into the spine. There it creates a blockage and herniation. The place of energetic discharge can be identified through the localization of muscular blockages.

Middle finger: it is a finger associated with intestinal health. If the middle finger’s middle joint is hypertrophied towards the ring finger, the wrong bacteria are in the large intestine. If the hypertrophy aims towards the index finger, there is disorder in the small intestine. With either, it is advisable to cleanse the intestines: 1) Don’t eat processed cheeses; the greasier they are the worse they are, as they cover the intestines with a thin film that prevents nutrient, vitamin and mineral absorption.

The kidneys’ element is water, and that is why their functioning (which expresses relationships, fears and feelings of responsibility) affects the health of the spine so much. For that reason, it is advisable to pay good attention to the kidneys, as all spine issues are associated with them. An herbal cure should take heed of which part of the spine is affected and with which organ it is connected, and then use the proper herbs accordingly.

2) Detoxify – psyllium, shiitake mushrooms, flax seeds, natural rice, sauerkraut cabbage, fruit and clean water. 3) Put healthy bacteria into the gut – lactobacillus. Ring finger: this finger represents the kidneys, which we have already dealt with in detail in knee joint diseases –
