More Than Enough!

What we have without the baptism in the Holy Spirit is simply not enough!

This is the conclusion Jesus’ disciples would have reached when they heard Him make this statement: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:45). Consider the whirlwind of change that Peter, James, John and the others had just been through.

Only weeks earlier, they had watched their leader as He was nailed to the cross.

For three years, they had followed this revolutionary leader, Jesus of Nazareth.

While Jesus had predicted the moment of His death, biblical history reveals that the disciples were personally and emotionally unprepared to face it. Their Messiah was crucified. He died. Friends took His body down from the cross and buried Him in a tomb.

All seemed hopeless. Nothing made sense. The disciples hid away, afraid that their own lives were in danger.

Then came Sunday!

Jesus rose. The stone was rolled away.

The dead body of their Master came back to life, and they saw Him in His resurrected form. Talk about a gamechanger! If this was possible, then anything was possible! People don’t just come back from the dead! But Jesus did. He conquered death. He overcame the grave, and, in so doing, He proved that He was who He said He was.

Acts 1:3 tells us, “After his suffering, he presented himself to them [the disciples] and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.” During this 40-day

period of time, Jesus began to unfold to His disciples what He wanted them to do next. His mission for them, should they accept it, was to take the message of His resurrection to the entire planet.

Can you imagine? The challenge Jesus gave to His disciples is often referred to as the Great Commission. But when you think of the implications of this commission it seems to be more like a huge impossibility.

• Most of these disciples weren’t formally educated.

• Many of them were in their early 20s— some in their late teens.

• All of them lived in a very poor region under the domination of Roman rule.

• For most of the three years they had walked with Jesus, the twelve disciples hadn’t gotten along very well.

• Several of them were rivals and were battling for top position in this discipleship group.

• None of them had traveled more than a few hundred miles from home.

• All this took place in an era of limited technology.

• Travel was by horse or by foot. There were no phones, tweets, emails, or even an established pony express.

Now Jesus expected them to take over the world! What we have in our lives without the power of the Holy Spirit is simply not enough!

Can you identify with that reality?

Every one of us faces things in our lives that cause us to admit, “What I have right now is simply not enough!”

constantly drag us down • Complications with our family relationships that leave us frustrated and confused • Habits we just can’t seem to break • Needs we just can’t meet • Visions and dreams we want to pursue but can’t see how they’ll become a reality Even our attempts to follow Christ faithfully often feel hollow and lacking; we feel like we don’t measure up. We slot the life we want to live into the “huge impossibility” category and feel powerless and inadequate to do anything about it.

If you have felt that way, I have some really good news for you: God knows you aren’t adequate for the task in your own strength. Your inadequacy doesn’t surprise Him. It doesn’t shake His confidence in you or in His plans for your life. It doesn’t limit what He can do in and through you.

What you have today is not enough, but the power of the Holy Spirit is enough! God has called you to so much more. His plan for you is to do so much more than just survive another week. He wants to use you to do the supernatural.

Yes, you! He wants the Holy Spirit to be manifested in and released through your life. What you have been doesn’t have to determine what you will be. Your past doesn’t define your potential.

But what you are in yourself just isn’t enough. You need more. You need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. He provides the power you need for your life, and that power is more than enough!

You have forty-five minutes in which to teach your entire lesson and your students are rowdy.

How do you teach those rambunctious kids in such a short time? Try these time-saving tips and take the stress out of time management!

6Tips 1. Establish classroom routines Divide your class time into prayer, lesson, activity, lesson wrap-up, altar call, and prayer. Kids need a schedule, and it will be easier to move them from activity to activity. Transitions will be noticeably smoother as the kids settle into the structure you’ve set. This is simple with Radiant Life Curriculum; the curriculum is already divided into easy sections for you!

2. Organize Before you begin any lesson, make a list estimating how long each activity will take. You might want to practice timing the activity yourself in advance.

Don’t assume that making modelingclay animals will take fifteen minutes only to discover the kids are finished (and throwing clay balls at one another) in five. Organizing your classroom will also help you keep on target.

3. Plan the distractions A short diversion from the lesson now and then is okay, but it’s better for the students if you schedule

interruptions. It’s okay to stop every five minutes and ask if they have any questions or need help on a project. If a child interrupts the lesson, you can remind him that he needs to wait just a minute or two–after you have invited the class to comment.

4. Lead prayer requests Allow the children to raise their hands and share prayer requests with you. Then pray for the requests aloud yourself, encouraging the children to pray along with you. Praying yourself helps you manage the amount of time spent on prayer. If you prefer child-led prayer groups, tell them how much time they have to share requests and pray.

5. Stay in control Kids will follow a leader–whether that leader is you or the chatty girl who disrupts the class. If your students sense that you have lost control, they will grapple for boundaries by acting out–and that eats up lesson time.

Catch their attention again (flip the lights on and off, or say “Freeze!”) and then use the sudden silence to express

both positive and negative aspects of their behavior (“Chris, I liked your comments about Jesus’ love this morning, but, by interrupting others, you are being disrespectful.”)

6. Be flexible This is one of the most important rules for managing your classroom.

Kids are growing people with creative minds, and they seldom react exactly as you’d expect. It’s okay if you don’t accomplish everything you had planned for that day’s lesson. Kids have bad days just like adults, and sometimes you’ll have to be a counselor instead of a teacher. Other days you’ll have a visiting student who doesn’t know the rules and can’t stop bothering his neighbor. Take things in stride.

And if you catch yourself getting frustrated, remember: kids will remember your attitude and how you treat them before they’ll remember the lesson you’re teaching. Be kind, be patient, and above all, manage your classroom with an attitude of love.

Affirming Gifts in Children IT’S SUNDAY MORNING. The firstgrade class is going well. Lydia smiles as she holds the visuals for her Sunday School teacher, Mr. Lisak. She loves to help and feels like an important member in the body of Christ. Lydia will grow up to be active in ministry because Mr. Lisak and other teachers like him are training her properly. When she is old, she will continue serving.

CHILDREN INCLUDED The apostle John wrote, “But as many as received him, to them gave the power

to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name … except those 12 years old and younger.” NOT! The “as many” includes boys and girls. Scripture is clear about membership in the body of Christ: there is no age requirement.

Children, youth, and adults can come to know Jesus.

Each member of the Body has important gifts or abilities to be used in ministry in the church and community, “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (Romans 12:4­­–6).

Each member can contribute to the life and health of the church. “So Christ

gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up” (Ephesians 4:11,12).

INVOLVE THEM Teachers who take the commission of Ephesians 4:11,12 seriously are raising an army of excited, serving saints. Children want to be trusted with ministry and need to be prepared. One of my goals each week, as I teach in Children’s Church, is to involve the children in ministry. As I give opportunity, they enthusiastically volunteer.

Look around your class this week. The child who volunteers to pick up crayons may have the gift of serving. Another child always jumps at the chance to pray for his classmates. Perhaps he is an intercessory prayer warrior waiting for your encouragement. The one who interrupts your lesson with Bible trivia can grow in his gift of teaching. You must recognize him as more than a nuisance. A girl wants to help you organize the glue sticks and art projects.

She may have the gift of administration.

From these examples, you can see the picture. We leaders of children in today’s church must prepare them to be leaders

tomorrow. Begin to view these young saints as members of the Body and treat them accordingly.

Allowing and even training children for specific ministries to others is a key link to health in the local church. This generation must become involved in ministries that allow them to grow their gifts, even as they grow physically.

Pray for God’s guidance in discovering the children’s gifts. What a tragedy that teachers and leaders in both public education and church settings recognize the giftedness of only those who stand out in the crowd. It is better to look for the giftedness of each individual you serve. God certainly has endowed each member of the Body with special gifts necessary for its health.

WHAT CHILDREN CAN DO Prayer is a ministry that should involve every believer, young and old.

Boys and girls as young as two or three are taught how to pray for one another in Sunday School. Children in prayer must become a common practice in our Pentecostal churches. Children are invited to special prayer meetings, not to sleep on the pews but to take an active role in praying for others.

A child with a gift of service may help you set out supplies and visuals. I allow every child who comes early a chance to help arrange chairs and prepare the room for class. The ones who love to lay out each paper or hand out snacks may

some day be medical missionaries or church food-service coordinators.

Children can teach. They can act, create, and enjoy the Sunday School experience. The key to discovering giftedness is allowing every child in your class the opportunity to serve. The quiet ones may not enjoy speaking roles, but put them behind a puppet stage and watch them bloom.

Children serve as ushers and worship leaders in our church. They participate in clown ministry, puppet teams, and outreach and care ministries.

What do children do in your church?

It is time to let them take thier Godgiven places of ministry in the body of Christ. Seek God’s wisdom in placing children in ministry. The church of today needs their ministries, and the church of tomorrow cannot survive without them.
