Special to Kickoff Football Preview Seymour High School head football coach Scott Branton is looking to build off a playoff appearance from last year. It will not be easy after losing 23 seniors from last year, but the Eagles have a very talented young group.“Ithink the keys are for us to improve every week. We are an extremely young team, we have about 76 kids on the roster but only about seven or so seniors out of the 76. We are returning just two starters on offense and three on defense. If you look at not just returners but anyone that had significant playing time in varsity football last year, there are only three of four on both sides of the ball. Our kids are eager to learn, they’ve been very coachable. They’ve had a really good summer and leading into fall camp, and they’re just a fun bunch to coach.”

SEYMOUR HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING A WINNING MINDSET
Coach Branton, who is in his fourth year as head coach, looks to build a consistent winning mindset that hasn’t been in the program in quite some time. He took steps towards that in his first year as head coach with a 5-5 record in a loaded 5A Region 2. “We thought we had things on the right track,” Branton said. “We had teams like Central and Halls on our schedule and we go 5-5 and felt like we were on the right track in terms of seeing changes in the kids. But then COVID hits and you don’t see those guys for four or five

“Mindset is very important, both positive and negative,” Branton said. “We talk all the time about how the mind is a magnet. So, if you constantly think negative thoughts and say, ‘oh, here we go again,’ those will be the results that you get. Changing that mindset is very difficult but very important to do.”
Branton said that Seymour currently has a two-man rotation at quarterback filled with healthy competition. “We have a junior in Blake Johnson who was our starting JV quarterback last year who moved over from receiver and “...the mind is a magnet. So, if you constantly think negative thoughts and say, ‘oh, here we go again,’ those will be the results that you get. Changing that mindset is very difficult but very important to do”
Coach Branton has plenty of pieces to fill in, whether that be incoming freshman or guys who might not have had an opportunity last year that are hungry to prove themselves. “If you look offensively, we are replacing the entire offensive line,” Branton said. The one guy that got significant reps last year was Skylar Dykes, he’s a senior. He’s been in the program all four years and has gotten better and he’s matured and he’s becoming more of a positive vocal guy on the team and he’s trying to lead by example and he’s the guy that’s got the most experience on our offensive line, so we’ll be looking to him to establish himself as a leader up front.”
— ScottHeadBrantonCoach
As for filling the production left by last year’s seniors, coach Branton has a plan set in place that revolves around team effort. “We graduated a 1,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher, and two of our leading receivers just speaking offensively,” Branton said. “We’ll look to fill those holes through playing by committee. We have a lot of young talent and kids, but they just aren’t very experienced. We are going to try to get as many reps as we can in our two scrimmages and jamboree leading up to our first game. We have confidence in the kids that we have filling in those spots, but it won’t be just one person, it will be several kids trying to fill those roles. Defensively, we lost our two leading tacklers and our two corners that had started since their freshman year. So again, it will be by committee. We will have a lot of kids filling roles. It won’t just be one individual.”
KICKOFF: 2022 FOOTBALL PREVIEW 88 months and a lot of those old habits and mindsets creep back in. We went through that year and then after the season we had a staff meeting. We basically just hit the reset button and said, ‘alright we are starting back over, and we are going to re-establish our standard and culture and hold the kids to it.’” The Eagles went 0-10 in 2020 after moving down to another loaded Region 1 in 4A, but improved to 6-5 in 2021 and its players got a taste of success to build upon into a winning culture.

“Receiver wise, we lost our top two receivers, so we’ve got a lot of young kids out there. The one that might surprise people, we’ve got Connor Hilton who is a senior this year. We got him to come out to play football for the first time in his four years at Seymour. He’s been a basketball kid, and we’re excited to have him. He provides us with some length and some height out there. We’ve also got Jayden Shanklin and Lyon Rocker who had a really good year in JV for us. Bryson Quick will be a sophomore, he’ll get some reps at receiver. Clint Stanley who didn’t play last year but came back out to football; he’s shown some real progress throughout the spring and summer. We are so young that we are just going to fill in so many different people. I could sit here and name people all night, but those are some of the guys who have stood out.”
Perhaps the biggest gap that the Eagles’ need filled is from the loss of its all-state rusher. Harris rushed for over 1,000-yards and ran for 15 touchdowns as the driving force of the offense.

“Defensively, a guy that was off to a great start in Braylon Oliver, he’s a senior. He’s played a lot of football for us since his freshman year. He’s back on the defensive-line, and he healed up very nicely from his injury. We’ve got Hunter Evans who had a really strong JV year. He’ll be a junior this year. I think this is only his second year of football maybe, but he’s progressed very well. I think he’ll stand there on the defensive line in replacing our two leading tacklers last year. Inside we’ll have Jayden Shanklin and Tyler Bouchelle. Shanklin had a really good JV season last year and Bouchelle transferred in at the end of last year. You won’t find a kid that outworks Bouchelle, he’s just a worker and I am very pleased with him. They’re helping each other out, and when one of them makes a good play, they’re always praising each other. Sequoyah’s first game will be August 20, when Tellico Plains comes to Sequoyah. This is a key game against a traditional in county rival. The Sequoyah Chiefs have an inscription on their shirts: Take Pride in Your Tribe. They are hard at work seeking to instill in their school and fan base a renewed pride in the Sequoyah High School football program.
KICKOFF: 2022 FOOTBALL PREVIEW 11 singled out as outstanding contributors on both sides of the ball. After mentioning several players and positions, Bolinger again asserts, “Our backfield is our strength.” Coaches
Two new coaches have been added to the mix at Sequoyah. Dustin Peels, a Sequoyah product, will return as Offensive Coordinator. Last year, he was Defensive Coordinator at Lenoir City. Bryce Ruis comes to the Sequoyah staff from William Blount High School. Ruis will coach the offensive line and the inside linebackers. A Normal Year Coach Bolinger points to the fact this will be a normal year. He was hired at Sequoyah around Memorial Day. He was not able to work with his new team in the spring and had no idea about the team or their skill set. Additionally, he needed time to evaluate the coaches he had inherited. His second season was plagued by Covid 19. The team was not able to work out or practice. This year, for the first time, the Chiefs had spring and fall practice. “A full year will make a big difference,” Bolinger contends. “Our kids have done really well in 7 on 7 competition. They see what we can do and they are excited for the season to begin.”

“When I was at Davis, one year, we played Stanford in a money game. We lost to Stanford and then we turned around and won the Big Sky (conference) Championship,” Shelton recalled. “Nobody remembered that we lost to Stanford, but everybody remembers that we won the Big Sky Championship. “We have a tough schedule (at SouthDoyle) and we have a lack of experience. When you have a lack of experience, you have a lack of maturity. You have a lack of physical maturity and a lack of emotional maturity. We’re going to mess things up and win or lose we want to make sure that we play up to South-Doyle standards. We have young kids and when you have young kids, they haven’t always been in the weight rooms as much as they should have.”
South-Doyle’s postseason stay was brief as they were ousted by Greeneville in the opening round of the playoffs. The Greene Devils reached the state quarterfinals. The schedule will be tough for the Cherokees in 2022 as they open at home against Oak Ridge on Aug. 19. South-Doyle entertains Grace Christian Academy in its home opener at Billy K. Nicely Stadium on Aug. 26. On Sept. 2, the Cherokees open region play at home against Scott. They then host Bearden (Sept. 9) before entertaining region foe Anderson County on Sept. 16. South-Doyle then travels to Farragut (Sept. 23) before hosting Fulton on Sept. 30. The Cherokees close out non-region play against We have some talent all over the place and we have good kids. As his young players learn the game of high school football, Shelton said that he’s been impressed with the youngsters’ attitudes. “We just have to develop them. We have to develop every player in our program because somebody’s going to get hurt. I don’t want to be the coach who says we lost because somebody got hurt. I could lose my whole offensive line, but it’s our job to make sure that the next group is ready.”

TKA went 8-4 in 2022 and reached the Division II-A State Quarterfinals before it was eliminated by University School of Jackson. “We were destroyed in the quarterfinals by USJ. They’ve got a good team down there,” Sellers said. The Lions finished second in their region last year behind Friendship Christian School, which has won the Division II-A East Region Title in multiple consecutive seasons.
The King’s Academy will tangle with the Commanders in the league opener in Seymour on Sept.Before16. the Lions see Friendship Christian, however, they will have four consecutive non-region tilts against Christian Academy of Knoxville
The Lions have made great strides in recent years and head coach Jonathan Sellers said his veterans are eager to build on the program’s recent success.“Thisis a year where we have a lot of seniors and this group of seniors has seen three other classes of seniors,” Sellers said. “Our seniors have done a good job raising the bar in the last four years, especially when you look at how far we’ve come in the last 20 years and 99 percent of that is because we’ve had outstanding young men that have come through here. “I think it would be a disappointment if this group didn’t continue to raise the bar.”

KICKOFF: 2022 FOOTBALL PREVIEW 27 (Aug. 19), Meigs County (Aug. 26), Chattanooga Howard (Sept) and Grace Christian Academy in Knoxville (Sept. 9). “CAK is a great team and (coach Travis Mozingo) has done a good job over there,” said Sellers who enters his fourth full season as TKA head coach after taking over the program midway through the 2018 campaign. “When we get to November and into the (playoff) quarterfinals, we usually see a team like them, a team that’s talented and big up front and has speed and talented skill players on the “That’sperimeter.whywe put a team like them on our schedule. We want to make the most of our opportunities in our non-region games.” After the game against the Warriors, Meigs County comes calling. That showdown was scheduled last year. It was scrapped, however, due to COVID-19 in the Meigs program. “Meigs County has been a strong team in (Class 2A) for several years and we got a forfeit win against them last year,” Sellers said. “I’m looking forward to playing them this year.” Chattanooga Howard went 0-8 last season but Sellers and TKA aren’t about to take the Hustlin’ Tigers lightly. “They had a down year last year but they always have some of the best athletes in the state,” Sellers said of Howard. “Then, we play Grace and I’m sure that they’ll be better than they were last year. “We’re going to see all kinds of different brands of football.” On Sept. 23, the Lions head to North Carolina to play Swain County. Those two squads didn’t play last year due to Coronavirus and TKA was awarded another forfeit win. The King’s Academy plays at Middle Tennessee Christian School on Sept. 30 before colliding with Lakeway Christian and Webb-Bell Buckle. The Lions close out the regular season with a home game against Notre Dame on Oct. 28.TKA enters the 2022 season with plenty of familiar faces as it returns some savvy and battle-tested veterans.
Top returners for the Lions, according to Sellers include: Riley Webber (senior, tight end/linebacker); Zeke Connatser (senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Tanner Norris (senior, running back/outside linebacker); Nick Donato (a senior and all-state player who will play on both the offensive and defensive lines); Garrett Cogdill (a junior offensive and defensive lineman
