INTRODUCTION

A warm welcome!

Welcome as you read the second issue of Village Voice. If you received the first one, back at Easter time, you’ll have an idea of what we’re about – providing interesting articles and useful information in a way that brings the Village together in common concerns and interests. As Vicar Bob indicated in the first Village Voice, we’re looking for other groups and organisations to submit items, and also for help with distribution. If you can help please phone Sandra Haigh on 01535 274225. This edition comes at Harvest time, with September also being a month for new beginnings as the new school year begins, and some of our young people disappear off to colleges and universities. It strikes me that the there’s something healthy in this coming together of Harvest and the new academic year. At Harvest-time we look back with thanksgiving for the year that has gone, appreciating the hard work of those around us, counting our many blessings. But even as harvest is gathered in, the work for the next year’s harvest begins. That’s true of both farmers and teachers, agriculture and education. We give thanks for what’s done, but the work goes on! This is true in churches too. Village Voice is produced by St Matthew’s and Trinity Churches, with the assistance of Overt Marketing, based in Wilsden. Trinity, on Chapel Row, is a Methodist and United Reformed single congregation. In the Methodist Church Ministers move to start work at the beginning of September, and we have

just welcomed Rev Christine Crabtree into our ministerial team, replacing Ian Griffiths, who has moved on to Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Christine has come from Lincoln, and arrives with Stephen, whom she married this summer. I’m not sure which has been the biggest change, coming to Bradford or beginning married life, but this is certainly a time of new beginnings for Christine and Stephen! They will have shared in farewell services and celebrations in Lincolnshire, enjoyed their wedding day, and now they begin their ministries amongst us here. Ministry at Trinity is provided by a team (think GP Practice), so Christine will be joining Phil Drake, Andrew Taylor and myself in working with you, although she will be your first link into the team. Some of us in the team have affectionately referred to Trinity from time to time as being a bit like ‘Dibley’ – full of characters, cakes, and no little laughter! I’m sure Christine is going to enjoy being part of the team, and I think you’ll enjoy working with her. Enjoy the Village Show too!

Wilsden Trinity Church

We were recently privileged to hear an inspiring talk on the work of The Gideons. Their stated mission is ‘sharing God’s message of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ by personal witness and through placing Bibles and New Testaments into people’s hands.’ They believe that ‘the Bible, God’s Holy Word, has the answer to every situation in life’ and at their own expense, produce and distribute thousands of Bibles every day in almost every language. You cannot buy a Gideon Bible they are all given away. We were told of countless lives which had been changed by a chance encounter with a Gideon Bible in a hotel room or given to a young person in school and many other examples. The Bible is still the top selling book, however it is also said that it is the most widely owned but least read book. If it is such a powerful

force perhaps it is time you blew the dust of your copy and dared to look inside.

WHY I BELIEVE THE GOSPEL The first reason for my believing the Gospel of Christ as truth is that it lives in my heart. Jesus said in John 14:16. ‘I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate [helper/ comforter/strengthener] to be with you for ever. This is the spirit of truth.’ The joyful truth and energy of the spirit I have experienced in many cultures. I have seen it in the pounding enthusiasm in Southern African services, in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church escalating drumming service leading up the midnight on Easter night; and in the deep spine-tingling harmonies of Russian Orthodox worship. What is truth? The truth for me was to find out about and work to try in my small way to bring together the three worlds: the first, my own; the second, the Russian communist world; and the third, the less industrialised countries, especially in Africa. I cannot consider living without that unifying light, that dynamic energy, within me. Otherwise what is the point of living? The second reason is the existence of the apparently impossible story of the resurrection. If you wanted people to believe your religion would YOU make up such a story? Mohammed did not; no other religious leader did. And God inspired a book, the Bible, saying that it was a woman who saw the risen Jesus first. A woman’s word was worth half of Continued over

that of a man in court. The genealogy of Jesus mentions no women except as wives to the important male forefathers. Jesus only called 12 male disciples. The explanation must be that it was as Renan said of history: it tells ‘exactly what happened.’ Mary Magdalene saw the risen Christ before anyone else. She is at the head of every list of female disciples. My third reason is that the first leader of this new religion had fled, and denied Jesus publicly. What a huge humiliation: for the future leader of the church: a servant girl was not threatened by a man but denounced him. Why write of Peter’s cowardice, except that it be true? And how on earth could Peter, such a broken coward, together with other similar week-kneed so-called followers, the erst-while disciples, resurrect themselves and become such a powerful force that when the Western Roman Empire finally collapsed, the

FAMILIES church was the sole repository of western civilisation for hundreds of years. The fourth reason for believing the Gospel are the almost incredible facts at and after the crucifixion. The Founder said on the cross ‘My God, my God why hast thou forsaken me?’ Paul, its first and greatest missionary, had spent years slaughtering Christians. Nonetheless, the church was inspired by these apparently unreliable women, failures, deniers and persecutors, Mary Magdalene, Jesus, Peter, and Paul to gain 1 billion adherents and to still expand mightily today. Many books have been written on exactly what happened at the resurrection: it is a mystery. But there can be no doubt of the dynamic explosion of the Christian faith. Finally, there is the dramatic fact that, unlike Mohammed, Jesus wrote nothing and did not ask for his words to be written down. Yet we have a New Testament .Others were inspired by the deep, evident truths of Jesus teaching and resurrection to write. If they had wanted to invent a convincing narrative as good public relations no inconsistencies, no cowards, no weaklings, and no turn-coats - they would not have written the Gospels. Wilsden Show 2014

This year, the Wilsden Gardening Association Show is on the 21st of September in the Village Hall. The event owes its origins to the efforts of a small group of people in 1976. A few enthusiasts met regularly to discuss the formation of a gardening association. Within a year, Bradford Council had been approached with regards to finding us somewhere in the village for some allotments. A field at the side of and to the rear of St. Matthew’s Church was allocated by kind permission of Mrs. Peggy Tordoff. She ran and rented the stables from Bradford Council but said that she did not need the top field. So began the W.G.A. – a mixture of allotment holders and “Cottage gardeners”- basically anyone who wanted to join. A trading hut was placed on the allotment area and in the days before Sunday trading we did a good trade in gardening sundries for members only. The gardening association grew to over 300 members and our remit was to promote gardening within the village, to conduct negotiations with councils, to protect allotment holder’s rights, to obtain gardening essentials for members and foster pride in the village. To that end we have bought

and installed two benches in the village for the use of the public as well as several on the allotments. Over the years, our efforts have provided funds for many charities. Manorlands has and still is one of our main recipients. We usually donate money to them from one of our events and have also planted a large rose bed. Our fund raising efforts one year – our 21st, included a raffle and the first prize was a ride on Concord! Our agenda begins in February with our AGM. This is held in Wilsden Conservative Club. Everyone is welcome; you do not have to be a club member. The Spring Fayre is held in the Village Hall. Stalls, teas, Wilsden Band, are all there as well as a large plant stall for people to buy plants for summer bedding. Continued over page

We often have an annual bus trip which in the past has seen us go to the Lake District, Holker Hall, Derbyshire, Beamish and several other places. A good day out and the bus is usually subsidised by the W.G.A. The high spot of the year is always the Wilsden Gardening Show. The earliest Show Programme that I have is from 1989, but we had had others before then. At one time the W.I. joined us in our show but we now present the show in our own right. In 1989 there were 55 classes. Our President then was James Jason Wood, and some of our committee members are still around today! Nowadays the show is always on the 3rd Sunday in September in the Village Hall and we have 111 classes. There are 18 Children’s classes, others include flowers, fruit, vegetables, handicrafts, bakery, jams and art exhibits. Entries are taken on the day, beginning at 8 am, and judging begins at 11.15 am. The doors open at 2 pm. The band play, the teas are served and the crowds assemble to see the exhibits. At 4pm the prizes are presented. At 4.30pm an auction

Pick’n’Mix Family worship re-starts in September When did you last make a vase of flowers out of a yoghurt pot and coloured paper? Or celebrate Baptism by covering a biscuit in blue icing and dunking a jelly baby in it? At a Pick and Mix service your children (and your inner child) can celebrate and explore Christianity through a whole range of activities. The service truly has something for almost everyone. We all start together in a fairly conventional but not overly formal way, with a couple of songs, a short Bible reading and an uncomplicated talk about the day’s theme, often with a bit of participation from children. One of the songs might involve actions, which sort out the uncoordinated but no one is giving marks out of ten. Then everyone gets to pick whatever mix they choose from a variety of zones around the premises, usually quiet zones within the church, noisier and messier in the adjoining family room. There may be two or three craft activities, at least one involving something edible, all linked to the theme of the day. In the quieter area there could be candles to light as a focus for prayer, a picture or Bible passage to reflect on, you might choose to kneel for a while at the altar rail, or to stay

sitting quietly in your place. All ages can try as many or as few as they fancy. You may be surprised how children of the electronic age enjoy low-tech paper and scissors. The service closes with everyone coming together again for a final hymn and prayers. There is chance to get to know each other better after the service over coffee, squash and biscuits among the off cuts, beads, glue and crumbs in the family room. All this happens on the second Sunday of the month at St. Matthew’s, Wilsden at 9.30am. Each service finishes within the hour. Quotes from Vicar Bob Evans:

Each evening should finish at about 8.45. It starts by wondering in what ways God has been involved in your life so far, it will ask if there is a God, and how do we know? A neighbourhood plan for Wilsden and Harecroft By Ruth Batterley Bradford Council is in the process of developing a Local Plan that will shape the development of Bradford from now until 2030; at least 200 extra houses are currently proposed for Wilsden. We now have the opportunity to let you have a say on issues such as housing, the environment, local shops and businesses, education and health needs and local transport. Had there been a Neighbourhood Plan in place when Crack Lane was declared a zone for housing by Bradford, the village would have been in a better position to influence the outcome before any decision was taken.

Sitting on a wall in the Parc Güell in Barcelona, we fell into conversation with another holidaymaker. He asked where we were from. ”A little village near Bradford that you won’t have heard of,” we replied. Within a few minutes we had discovered that our garden wall was one of the original field walls of Spring Farm, Wilsden, where our new acquaintance, Bernard Peel, was born and where he lived until he was nine years old, when the family left the village to take a bigger farm. In the first half of the19th century, the population of Wilsden almost quadrupled as the Industrial Revolution changed the face of this rural backwater, bringing a dozen mills within its boundary. Wilsden became known as one of the many West Riding mill villages. However, it had existed for centuries before that as a small agricultural community, its size limited by the numbers its far from lush pastures could support. Wilsden’s early farms were not quite like those in storybooks, where pretty farmhouses are shown with a garden in front and a neat yard behind, surrounded by their own green fields. Our farms were built up gradually by enclosure of previously waste land. A man might become the owner of a number of small

fields, not necessarily adjacent to each other or near the house. Sometimes exchanges would be arranged to give more convenient holdings. In other cases quite complex legal agreements were drawn up to allow access for farmers and their livestock across a neighbour’s land. These could be very specific, applying only to the named parties and not creating general rights of way. Sometimes the agreement gave a right for a man to drive his stock on a public road to get to and from his land. Spring Farm was one such farm, with fields on both sides of Wilsden Main Streets and at Townfield. It was a dairy farm and the Peel family’s predecessor, John Metcalfe, was still exercising his right to drive his cows up Main Street to pasture in the 1930s. Perhaps it is just as well that this particular land is no longer farmed. A slow-moving herd of cows would have a more dramatic effect on morning traffic than any measures the Highways department have in mind. The cows in the picture were not from Spring Farm but were in the lane only a few minutes’ walk from Main Street, making their way to Lee Farm which is now a private house. The barn to which the cows were heading, with its two date stones, a faint 1668 and a clearer BF1793, possibly marking a re-build by Benjamin Ferrand, has been converted to cottages. business of farming has not quite gone. Cows and sheep, and lambs in due season, can still be found very close to Main Street and the village is still surrounded by fields, an important part of its character and ambience.

Zion Methodist Chapel

Long before it became St. Monica’s, the building was a Methodist chapel. Ann Biltcliffe (who is now Ann Myers ) remembers the Youth Club held there and dances, concerts and other social events. Temples Various is an expanded version of the history of St. Matthew’s Church first written by Astrid Hansen in 1996. The story is brought up to date to the point at which Wilsden once again became a Church of England parish in its own right and part of the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. The story tries to set church life in a wider context and briefly includes changes in other Christian denominations in the village. The title comes from a poem written in 1824 by the then famous Airedale Poet John Nicholson, called “One the New Church at Wilsden” which begins What temples, various, since old Time began, Have on this little globe been rear’d by man! Wilsden Gala 2014

Wilsden Gala 2014 hailed a resounding success... The sun shone, the band played and villagers turned out in droves to watch the gala’s W-themed procession make its way from Wilsden Village Hall to the cricket field for the first Wilsden Gala in two years. There were witches, wasps, weathermen, Wolverines and even a few Wallies (of Where’s Wally? fame of course!). All the costumes were brilliant and it was very hard to choose the fancy dress prize winners. This year’s gala queen was Lucy Hutchinson, in a gorgeous handmade dress made by gala committee member Linda Lancaster. With her

two attendants, Vienna Welthy and Archie Morgan, she was crowned by the Harden gala queen before officially declaring the gala open at 2pm. After relocating this year from the village hall to the cricket field, there was lots of space for entertainment. In the central arena we were treated to a birds of prey display, a dance performance from Jennifer’s Dancekool, a taekwondo display and even some clog dancing. There were also children’s races, with plenty of medals to be won! Stalls and games this year were a real mix. Along with classic pocket money games such as Splat the Rat, Play Your Cards Right and Guess the Name of the Teddy, a number of stalls by local artisans sold everything from gorgeous cupcakes to handmade softy toys. Punters were queuing up to dip their hand in the gooey slime tombola – a great way to cool down! And loom band kits were a sellout hit.

The bouncy slide and rides were very popular with little Wilsdeners, and the beer tent with the bigger ones! The WI provided tea and cakes, with a barbecue by local butcher Richard Arundel, so there was plenty of choice for anyone seeking refreshment. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event was organised by a brand new committee, who should all be very proud of what they managed to achieve with their first ever gala. Well done to everyone who helped organise Wilsden Gala 2014, and big thanks too to everyone who came along to support it. 2014 Year of the Flea (& Tick) Airedale Veterinary Group

For the Chinese this is the year of the horse but in England this is very much Year of the Flea (& Tick). A mild winter, wet spring and a warm summer has led to a huge increase in the number of fleas and we can expect things to get worse before they get better. August is worse than July & September even more so, so get ready now, treat the fleas & your house before it becomes a major epidemic! The tick epidemic was predicted as early as May; type “Ticks Daily Mirror” into a search engine such as Google and you will find an article they wrote in May. At Airedale Vets we have already seen a large amount of dogs and cats with bad flea or tick problems this year. We had to remove over thirty ticks from one poor cat. Fleas & ticks are not only a great nuisance but they can cause & carry disease. In China a whole city has been shut down after a man died from Bubonic Plague which is carried by fleas in July this year. I think it is very unlikely that this would happen it England but it does make you think. To make the problem worse, the most popular spot-on flea treatment in England is now getting a bit long in the tooth and no longer works as well as it did when the ingredient was first used in the UK over thirty years ago. The Sunday Mail reported on another popular flea spot-on treatment, by Bob Martin, with the headline: “Firm axes flea collars after ‘poison danger’ is revealed by Mail on Sunday”. The ladies of the Wilsden WI continue to meet on the first Monday each month at 7.30pm in Wilsden Primary School, Tweedy Street. They have had some very interesting speakers during the past months with a talk by Allan Stuttard on his experiences in the clothing industry in Hebden Bridge to Veronica Bird who was a Prison Governor both in this country and Russia, quite a contrast and eventually being awarded a OBE for her work in the prison service. As most will know the Wilsden Gala was held on Sunday 20th July on a lovely summer’s day and Wilsden WI ladies were delighted to provide the teas and cakes. They will be able to make a generous donation to Wilsden Village Hall and President Judy wishes to say she was very grateful to all the ladies who donated cakes and helped to serve the teas, even though they were shattered at the end! The summer outing took place on a somewhat drizzly day at the end of May but nothing dampens the spirits of the WI as they enjoyed the wonderful well dressings at Tissington, near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. The trip was planned for Ascension Day and they were able to follow the procession around the pretty

village and view the six wells depicting and remembering the First World War. In the afternoon they were welcomed to Tissington Hall by Sir Richard FitzHerbert and given a tour of the early 17th century hall before travelling back to Wilsden. Judy’s pictures show one of the well dressings and the group at Tissington Hall. The future is looking good as they look forward to Tricia Atkinson telling them about the Murgatroyds of East Riddlesden Hall on Monday 1st September and on the 6th October they will be taken to the Dolomites and Venice with David Alred showing his photographs.

Scouts By Ian Maitland

At Harden & Wilsden Scout group we have just completed another active year. In October some of our scouts attended the District mountain bike camp in Malham, spending the weekend learning mountain bike sills and bike maintenance. In the spring term the scouts spent a weekend at Hag Dyke, a remote farm house on great Whernside, near Kettlewell. Our Summer camp this year was held at Raven Gill on the North Yorkshire Moors. The Scouts built a large wigwam which they slept in, cooked over camp fires and played wide games. Activities included horse riding, sea fishing and the undertaking of a light weight camping expedition. This required the Scouts to plan a route and then navigate across the Yorkshire Moors, wild camping on the way, planning what food and equipment to carry, and cook. We meet every Tuesday evening, in which we have done activities including climbing, snow tubing, high ropes and kayaking. We have also been working towards badges including their 1st aid badge learning how to deal with cuts, fractures and obtain help. For their Community Challenge, Scouts held a coffee morning at St Mathews Church, they produced posters, baked cakes, bought tea and coffee and worked out a pricing strategy. They managed to raise ÂŁ320 for Cancer Research. We entered two teams the District Indoor Cooking Competition, in which Scouts were required to cook a three course meal with a given set of ingredients in two hours. One of our teams, Amber Coleman and Maddy Wheeler won the District completion and went on to come second in the County Competition.

Scout Adventure...

Four Scouts, Mathew Peel, Noah Hammond, Amber Coleman and Rowan Maitland, achieved their Gold Scout Award, which is the highest award in the Scout section. In order to do this they have completed all of the nine Scout challenge badges. Scouts is open to boys and Girls aged 10 to 14. Our Scout troop also has an active Beaver section for children aged 6-8 and Cub section for children aged 8-10. Scouting is very popular with young people, we have a thriving scout troop. However we do require more adult scout leaders to help provide a varied and active program. Scouting is challenging and fun, anyone interested in helping should contact Ian Maitland 07920450146. There are two Brownie units in Wilsden, 1st Wilsden which started in 1959 and 2nd Wilsden which started in 1963 and they are both as popular and as busy as they were all those years ago. Our Brownies meet weekly during term time and follow the Brownie Adventure. This includes special events, day trips, holidays and camps. Brownies learn new hobbies, play music, explore other cultures and get adventurous outdoors. In 2014 Brownies celebrated their Centenary and there was a special Big Brownie Birthday Challenge badge for them to complete which was made up of 57 activities, themed around the events of 21 of the last 100 years, under the headings of You, Community and World. Some of the challenges included a ‘flying up’ adventure that they hadn’t done before, taking a train ride and visiting somewhere new, making giant pieces of art on the ground outside, holding a Fair Trade tea-making

event, holding a meeting with no electricity, and many many more activities. The Brownies threw themselves into this badge with great enthusiasm and all completed it. The Brownies also had a Big Brownie Birthday party with other units in our Division to finish off the Brownie year and took part in Wilsden Gala. Wilsden Wall Building Group By Tony Caunt

The walling group is continuing to improve walling in and around our village for the enjoyment of all the residents. The group, set up in 2008 has built and repaired yards and yards of walling ( or should I quote “metres” ) as I am 72 I am used to using the traditional measurements !

I have included some photographs of the Pie Hole – this is the snicket / path at the end of Tweedy Street which goes onto the fields and up to Shay Lane, used by many folk to access the school and Main Street and also used for enjoying walking into our lovely countryside right on our doorsteps. Regretfully some of our residents don’t always respect our village and resort to destroying the walls by pushing off the “toppers” as the top stones are called, I can’t understand vandalism as it achieves nothing and just annoys my walling group when we have spent hours rebuilding the wall. My photographs show one of our members, Tim Driver rebuilding near the field entrance and then a completed curved wall further down the Pie Hole.

Residents of West Royd will be interested to hear that the group intends to clear the weeds and re-build the walling to make the path easier to walk from the top of the recreation ground and along to St. Matthew’s Close as my picture shows the stones are hidden in the long grass.
