Editor’s Letter Welcome to our first edition of My Community Hub. Brought to you by the people who published Prosider magazine, me (Kimberley) my work/life partner (Simon) and our fabulous designer Chris. Last year we were successful in producing such a great magazine with lots of interesting articles about community life. We listened to feedback from our clients and readers, who would have liked to have seen something more often, and more cost effective. And that’s when our idea for My Community Hub was born. It’s exactly what the name states – your Community. A place to get involved, and bring you closer together with your friends, neighbours, retailers and independent businesses. We are really excited about what we can offer in this brand new publication and we’d like to call upon you – the readers to get involved too! Send us your stories and we will do our best to publish them. Alongside the magazine we are also launching our new website – My Community Hub – a place to find out what’s happening in the area. If its not in the magazine, then we will add local community articles to the website. You can register your details on the site, which will enable us to contact you in the future with lots of fantastic offers / vouchers from local businesses, so please help support our new community hub, by visiting www.mycommunityhub.co.uk You can also contact us by phoning 01535 275355 or by traditional means – post a letter to us at Overt Marketing, 143 Main Street, Wilsden, BD15 0AQ Or by email at kim@overtmarketing.co.uk Final comment : To all our fantastic customers, thank you for supporting us in our transitional journey with the Hub. We are so appreciative of your commitment to us as a business. We look forward to hearing from you very soon.

Meet the team

Kimberley Devine Hi, I’m Kimberley, owner and dogsbody behind Overt Marketing Ltd. Before taking on the challenge of setting up Overt with Simon, I was successful in my long term career as an Account Manager, working for some of the largest print companies in the West Yorkshire area. My expertise lies within customer services, I always give 110% when it comes to looking after my clients, and try to do it professionally with a smile on my face! :) I live in Harden, with Simon, our two children Lily-Mae (6)

and Theo (5) and our 2 cats, Mitsi (12) and Brup (21). Likes: Home comforts, friendship, kind people, family time, I should say work, chocolate, a drink now and again, going to the Fleece in Harden on a Friday night with the kids, walking and keeping fit. Dislikes: Arrogance, ignorance, ironing, being hungover, being cold, bragging. My challenge for 2012 – running the Great North Run in September. Aaargghh! I am running for Martin House, Childrens Hospice.

Simon Harrup I’ve been working in Design & Marketing for 24 years, I started a good old fashioned apprenticeship at just

16. A few years ago I got a bit fed up of working for nameless faceless corporate organisations that didn’t really matter to me anyway (other than a pay cheque). So, we set about creating Overt to try and make a difference in our own community. It’s been a roller coaster and not always easy, very rewarding at times though. We have developed a great relationship with many local businesses, I love it when we see what difference we can make. I’m passionate about community and trying to get

Chris Thorpe Hi everyone, I’m Chris, designer for The Hub magazine, I’ve been a designer for 12 years and I’m loving my time here at Overt Marketing. people to collaborate for a greater good. I get a little wound up about people who love to complain but never want to try to make a difference or offer positive input. I’m a proud Family man, Yorkshire man and Bradfordian, I always see the good in people and the silver lining to every cloud. Likes: Good food, my greenhouse, the great outdoors, positive people, honesty, great design, helping people. Dislikes: Negative people, those daft jeans that kids wear half way down their bum...

Local News

Local mystery solved A mystery that concerns a local National Trust property and Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta, has finally been resolved through research by a member of the Bingley Gilbert and Sullivan Society. It has long been a local legend that there was a link between Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore and the Murgatroyd family of East Riddlesden Hall. However, a letter has come to light that William Brigg, a wealthy industrialist from Keighley wrote to W.S Gilbert in March 1888, seeking enlightenment of whether or not there was a link. Speculation arose last century when it was thought that Gilbert had visited East Riddlesden Hall and had based one of his characters on James Murgatroyd, a wealthy wool merchant from Halifax, who had bought and rebuilt this property in 1638. James and his three sons had a reputation for misdemeanours, acts of debauchery and financial corruption. One documented misdemeanour occurred in the churchyard at Luddenden Foot in Halifax. They were fined by both the Crown and the Church and had to pay £500 towards repairs to St Pauls Cathedral in London. Coincidently, James and his sons appear to have similar traits to those given by Gilbert to his characters in

this production. William Brigg from Keighley did receive a reply to his letter from Gilbert who wrote “my selection of the name Murgatroyd was purely accidental and had no relation whatever to the antecedents of any person bearing that name” In conclusion to this mystery, research suggests that Gilbert could have visited East Riddlesden Hall, but as long ago as two hundred years after the Murgatroyds had lived there and could have been inspired by stories of this notorious family to write this operetta. Did fear of litigation put him off from this admission? We will never know! Did he envisage the Levenson Enquiry and the demise of the News of the World? Ruddigore or The Witches Curse, is a tale of love and torment and the story relates to the curse put on all the baronets of Ruddigore that if they do not commit a crime every day they shall die! As common in all Gilbert and Sullivan works, with wit and charming music, all is resolved, love conquers in the end and everyone is happy! • Ruddigore is showing at Bingley

already secured some funding from the Playbuilder’s scheme as well as the owner of the Aagrah, Mr. Aslam from the Aagrah. Friends of Northcliffe have been working on this project for over a year and really hope that they can provide good natural facilities in our local area. Friends of Northcliffe also have a vision to provide

toilet facilities and a cafe for the people of Shipley. This will provide a friendly and welcoming environment in the park and will work alongside the tennis courts, football and cricket pitch as well as the play area. They desperately need public and local business support to help them achieve this. • Please refer to our Whats on guide for up to date events run by the Friends of Northcliffe.

Saltaire Arts Trail aims high in 2012 The World Heritage Village of Saltaire in West Yorkshire is the destination for lovers of contemporary art and craft this May bank holiday weekend as Saltaire Arts Trail returns with its most exciting and ambitious programme to date. Now in its sixth year, Saltaire Arts Trail is perhaps best known for its Open Houses, an opportunity for visitors to step inside the historic cottages that were built for Sir Titus Salt’s mill workers. These domestic exhibition spaces lend themselves perfectly to the display of highquality handmade art and craft. Another returning favourite, the Makers Fair in the magnificent Victoria Hall, hosts over 60 designers and makers selling their work, as well as giving demonstrations and workshops. Whether looking for woodwork, jewellery, textiles, glassware, illustration, painting, photography, ceramics, bookbinding, sculpture or printmaking, visitors will be spoilt for choice. One artist or maker will be awarded the Shipley College Best in Yorkshire Award, a cash prize for the best presentation of work in either the Open Houses or the Makers Fair, judged during the weekend. However the Open Houses and Makers Fairs are by no means all Saltaire Arts Trail has to offer: the village’s cobbled streets, green spaces and listed buildings are the setting for a huge variety of exhibitions, film screenings, sound installations, workshops, demonstrations and craft activities aimed at the whole family. 16 | My Community HUB

Thanks to support from the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Saltaire Arts Trail has been able to invest heavily for the first time in newly commissioned contemporary artwork. This will include a new work by emerging West Yorkshire artist Eoin Shea; a photography exhibition drawing on Saltaire’s textile heritage; and a project by Saltaire” based artists Yvonne Carmichael and Andy Abbott encompassing photography, sound installations and a guided walk. In partnership with Bradford City of Film, Saltaire Arts Trail will be presenting an artist film strand for the first time. Curated by Cherry Kino, an independent organisation dedicated to exploring the artistic possibilities of analogue film, the strand will include a film installation in Saltaire’s launderette and a screening in the superbly atmospheric top room of Salts Mill. Fans of the metal smith Cathy Miles will be able see her at work from 2- 4 pm on Sunday 7 May at the Kath Libbert Jewellery Gallery, as she creates a new piece of work inspired by Saltaire using a unique concoction of Continued on page 18

On the Saturday night visitors are invited to join Saltaire Arts Trail for ‘WunderNacht’, an evening celebration of local creative talent featuring film, animation, dance, live music, real ale, vintage dress-up, food, poetry, storytelling and more. Inspired by the original 16th century ‘Cabinet of Curiosities,’ the event will put a contemporary spin on the notion of a collection of the exotic and unusual. This event is sponsored by Northern Rail. Creative Director Amanda Chinneck said: ‘We’re delighted

to be offering such a packed programme for 2012 that offers many firsts including newly commissioned contemporary art and many new exhibitions. These will sit alongside some of our regular and much loved attractions like the Makers Fair and the Open Houses. Since its creation in 2007 Saltaire Arts Trail has attracted over 200 makers and contemporary artists and provided opportunities to exhibit and sell their work in over 40 venues across the village. The Mystery of the Locomotive in Bingley Bog

Original Station, Bingley. Image courtesy of Bradford Libraries For years there have been rumours that a steam locomotive and three open goods wagons disappeared into Bingley Bog during the construction of the Bingley to Keighley line in the 1840’s and that it is still buried where it sank. The train and its trucks were said to have been swallowed up by the bog somewhere in the area once occupied by Bingley Auction Market. Local historian Alan Cattell has been approached by several Bingley residents asking him if the rumour is fact or fiction. This article explores his investigation to date. Telegraph and Argus Investigation in January/ February 1988 In response to an enquiry from regulars at the Glen pub in Gilstead in 1988 the Telegraph and Argus investigated a number of sources to find out if there was any truth to the rumour. Despite contact with British Rail, The National Railway Museum, 22 | My Community HUB

local libraries and historians no written or hard evidence was forthcoming and the newspaper concluded that “A persistent and long standing piece of a towns’ folklore has been scotched. The then landlord of the Glen, David Hardiman said in response to the findings of the investigation “So the engine in the Bingley Bog is just a lovely little story that’s developed down the years”. Despite the Telegraph and Argus enquiries 24 years ago the rumour still persists.... so is there any other evidence which might suggest a solution to the mystery?

Other Sources of Information To try to answer the question I have searched 19th Century newspaper articles from 1846/47 when the rail line through the bog was being built. I have also checked all local history books relating to Bingley by authors, Cudworth, Dodd, Speight, Horsfall-Turner and Firth. There is no record in these sources of a locomotive sinking into the bog at any time. Continued on page 24

WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED? Building the Rail Line 1846/7 • Horsfall-Turner records that when the line was being built in 1846 “Great difficulties were experienced in finding a solid foundation for the line owing to the existence of an insatiable quagmire bog. This morass was forty five feet deep, composed of turf, bog soil and swamp which yielded to the pressure of the embankment, so readily that the ground was rent into fissures, engulfing and capsizing the line”. • The railway inspector of the time was very complimentary about the way the line had been constructed at Bingley, including how the problem of negotiating the bog had been successfully resolved. Had a locomotive sunk into the bog during the construction of the railway this would have been recorded in newspaper reports of the time. Two significant reports made in the months leading up to the opening of the railway, talk of the problems of construction but not of any incidence of a sinking locomotive: Daily News February 1 1847 An Insatiable Bog – “The railway between Shipley and Keighley is progressing rapidly with the exception of the part near Bingley Church called the Bingley Bog. Sixty tons of earth and stones are cast into this bog every hour of the day. The earth and stones on the east end are conveyed from Nab Wood and from the west by horses. Notwithstanding this immense quantity being dropped into the gulf at both ends by three lines of rails, all is swallowed up every morning, the heavy matter sinking thus, forces the lighter up and makes a black spongy embankment on both sides. 24 | My Community HUB

Bradford Observer March 8 1847 The Directors Opening – “We are now going over the much talked of Bingley Bog: it seems now quite firm... It ought to be satisfied as no fewer than 100,000 cubic yards of solid earth and stone have been poured into the insatiable maw of this bog”

“At about eight o’ clock the goods train from Leeds to Lancaster came up at the rate of about twenty miles per hour and ran into the wagons which were on the main line, three were broken into atoms and a fourth much damaged. The engine was thrown off the line and badly damaged.”

Building the Grammar School 1853 Speight (1898)recorded: “ In 1853 a new Bingley Grammar School was built, but in a few years it had to be abandoned as it showed signs of giving way; the site unfortunately being close to the treacherous Bingley Bog which gave the railway contractors so much trouble.” The School was built in the same position as the rumoured place that the locomotive was said to have sunk and in making comment Speight made a link between the School, the Bog and the Railway. Firth (1977) records : “In 1853 the new grammar school was constructed on land that now houses the Bingley Auction Market. .....This building was declared unsafe by a government inspector in October 1860. The Bingley Bog on which it had been erected soon caused structural distortions and the school was actually rebuilt on its present site”

A Possible explanation

Collision at Bingley Railway Station 1867 The only specific mention of a locomotive problem at Bingley I can find was recorded in the Lancashire Gazette of 2nd November 1867 under the heading Collision at Bingley Railway Station:

History and urban myth can often develop or become distorted over a period of time where seemingly unrelated facts are combined to present what is then regarded as fact. • The Capsizing of the Railway line into the bog when it was being built. • The sinking into the bog of the Grammar School building at the Auction Mart location.

• The derailing and damage of the locomotive and three wagons at Bingley Station.

Each of these may have been combined to present what then became known as local fact e.g That a locomotive had sunk into the bog at Bingley. All the events described above occurred within a twenty-one year time frame during a period when the railway system was young, unknown and mysterious and still becoming established in people’s lives and minds. These are my suggestions on what may have happened....... But do any readers know differently? If so contact Alan through: kim@overtmarketing.co.uk

Giving cats a second chance For the past 20 years Haworth Cat Rescue has helped rehome thousands of abandoned and unwanted cats - and given a ‘second chance’ to loved pets owners can no longer keep. Last year the charity took in 540 cats. The charity has outgrown its current premises and its patron, author Milly Johnson, is spearheading 1000 Champions (www.1000champions.org.uk) to help fundraise for a new, bigger, permanent centre. Campaign manager Corinne Moore talks to The Hub. “Many cats are pregnant when they arrive. Our volunteer foster carers look after them in their own homes, so that the mum to be gets special care and her subsequent kittens get plenty of handling and used to household noises such as TVs, door bells and vacuum cleaners! Kittens are returned to the centre at 10 weeks for neutering and adoption. “Every cat waiting to be homed has a different story. Some may have come in because their owner is seriously or terminally ill, others are the casualty of divorce or home repossession. It is frightening how few private landlords will accept pets. Sadly we are seeing more cats callously dumped with complete indifference to their suffering or people moving away and leaving the cat behind - and only the lucky ones are brought in to us. “Penny is a two year old who has not yet recovered from the trauma of her owner’s death. owner with plenty of time and love to lavish on her. If you think you are the purrrfect lifelong companion for Penny or another cat or kitten in our care why not take a look at our website - or call in for a visit.”

Community In this feature, we are proud to be working with Woodbank Nurseries, situated in Harden. So where did it all begin for Woodbank? And how did the Nursery get to what it is today? Read on to find out …

Discover Woodbank Nurseries Inspiring gardeners since 1929 It all started in 1929 with just an open field growing vegetables and plants for the Manor House (Woodbank) next door, followed by growing cut flowers for the markets, its main purchaser was Woolworths. During the 1935-1945 war it contributed to the war effort growing vegetables and keeping chickens for egg production. In 1985 ACW Garden Services bought the original nursery on the present site from its original owner. The business started as a wholesale nursery employing a member of staff and originally concentrated on growing cut flowers and alpines these where growing on the fields we now use as the car park. From the late 90s Britain made little commitment to horticulture, but the family business grew and began to expand. Woodbank Nurseries is more than any old nursery; it is a treasure trove of discovery, offering everything practical and beautiful for your garden and home.

Then and Now: Woodbank Nurseries 32 | My Community HUB

Reserve ramblings ve Warrillow, w fruitfulness for Ste in Baildon. llo me d an sts mi all e It’s Marston nature reserv e. warden at the Denso date about what’s going on at the reserv He has sent us this up

Steve is out and about on the reserve By Steve Warrlliow It’s that time of year again, I’m sat on the bench next to my cabin and for the last couple of weeks I have watched the grass beneath the metal bench grow. Do I mow it now or do I mow it next week? I love the first cut of the year, the smell of freshly cut grass that tickles my nose and reminds me what’s to come and once the first cut is done it seems to refresh the reserve, it makes it looked loved and cared for. And to think just a few weeks ago I was checking daily the growth of the daffodils, the green leaves and storks and the flower head held tight within its gossamer coat, then from nowhere out the sun golden flowers appear, now they are everywhere and they hardly get a second look. New plants are appearing celandines, primroses and yesterday the first of the

cowslips broke into flower, the reserve is alive with yellow! And over the last few days bees have been busy dashing from one flower to the next. And the hawthorn leaves are tasting simply divine, bread and butter is the old saying for how they taste. Later in the year they become too tough to eat. They taste great in cheese sandwiches! In the next few days, between the 14th and 17th of the month the first migrant warblers will be returning, the first being the chiffchaff, a plain warbler with a really dull call as warblers go, its call chiff-chiff-chaff-chiff- chaff should quite boring but raises the heart for birders because when these guys return you know spring is on its way. At this time of year I always wonder what will we see over the coming months, will we see a migrating Osprey as it flies north to Scotland, we have recorded

3 Ospreys over the last twenty years, or will we have our second ever cuckoo. But mainly it will be the insects such as dragonflies and butterflies. We had a pretty poor year last year hopefully it will be better this year. We have as usual our monthly walks these ranging from birding skills to poetry Talking of poetry I will be publishing a new book of poetry in June for the open day. The title of which is ‘waiting for the swallows’ all the poems were inspired by the reserve and with each sale a donation will be given to the friends of Denso Marston NR.

If you want to find out more about the reserve please contact me on Tel: 07919525913.

Don’t be a victim! Do you know if your locks are Snap Safe? Protect your new home before it’s too late... Police in Bradford/Leeds recently released figures that show 6 out of 7 burglaries were effected via ‘lock snapping’. Lock snapping is the latest method used by burglars as it is quick and easy and needs no special tools. If you have a UPVC door then the Euro cylinder that locks the door has a weakness that the burglar, by sheer force and a few basic tools can break the lock and enter your home in under a minute! Another method of attack is ‘lock bumping’ which uses special keys and a little skill. This method leaves no sign of forced entry and therefore insurance companies may not pay out in the event of a burglary.

30%

The locks we supply are kite marked and built to ‘secured by design’ standards as recommended by the police. The good news is that the lock manufactures have produced new locks to over come these weaknesses and beat the burglar. The latest locks now provide a greater level of security than ever at a reasonable cost to you. Hard work pays off for The Friends of St Ives The Friends of St Ives have been very busy since the beginning of the year. We in the final stages of the restoration of two rooms of the Coach House at St Ives, turning them into information centre for visitors and an education centre for schools and other organisations. Part of this project has been the restoration of the original old 1860’s Range which has been undertaken by specialist, Gordon Pickles from Bolton Abbey. (pictured). After he put the final parts into place, the Range was lit for probably the first time in 80 to 100 years. It ‘drew’ beautifully, and the sight of the range ‘come back to life’ was wonderful. We are now going to learn how to cook on it and then we’ll give demonstrations and classes to visitors on how our ancestors cooked everyday meals using old recipes. The rooms have been restored using the traditional materials both inside and out and where fittings were damaged, they have been reproduced. The paint colours have been carefully chosen to represent those often used in the working rooms these once were. Volunteers from the Yorkshire Building Society most kindly came and spent a day finishing

painting the woodwork inside and out, using again Heritage paints and colours. We are very grateful for their help. We have also been designing static displays regarding St Ives’ history and information about the varied wildlife, trees and plants to be found on the Estate, plus changing displays throughout the Year. We would welcome volunteers to help us ‘man’ the rooms. The Aire Valley Archers are an active Archery Club based at St Ives and they have recently been busy planting 105 saplings of blackthorn, hawthorn, hazel, silver birch, rowan and common oak around the Archery field, which is based at the far side of

Coppice Pond. These have been obtained from the Woodland Trust in support of their Jubilee Woods Project. Included in the pack was one very special sapling grown from seeds gathered from Royal Estates: a Royal Oak Sapling. It was thought that the most appropriate spot to plant this, would be close to the site of the Ferrand Oak memorial (situated halfway between the playground and Betty’s Lodge). This great oak tree, thought to be at least 250 years old and weighing over 12 tonnes, was felled on the 15th March 1985 to help in the restoration of York Minster after the disastrous fire. We hope one day, this little Jubilee Sapling will grow to be another giant oak and be part of St Ives for several hundred years. We will be continuing our programme of guided walks and talks throughout the year and details can be found on our website www.friendsofstives. org.uk or on posters around the estate a week before. For more information about the St Ives Estate – visit their website at www.friendsofstives.org.uk

Health Matters Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery in the Canalside Healthcare Centre in Bingley, will be sharing with The Hub readers exclusive advice on topical health issues and giving his tips for a healthy life.

Bowel Cancer - are you in the know? There’s been a regular “Health Matters” page for several editions now, and in the past I have often wondered whether my ramblings are of any interest to the Bingley population. Several patients have commented that “I read your article”, which has been encouraging! Then, after the prostate article, one of my male patients came in and said that after reading it he was worried about his symptoms. Subsequently he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He would otherwise have ignored his symptoms. That’s pretty fantastic, and is good motivation for continuing this column! Another cancer that’s quite topical at present is bowel cancer. There’s now a National Screening Program that invites everyone on their 60th birthday to send a sample of their stool in the post. We’ve had several patients that have had early and treatable cancers picked up through this screening test, and would strongly encourage anyone who is invited to take part. There’s also an ongoing media campaign to encourage people not eligible for the screening test to look out for possible signs of bowel cancer. You may have heard the advert on the radio asking you “have you got blood in your poo?” 38 | My Community HUB

It sounds kind of funny, but there is a serious message there. It is really common to get red blood dripping into the toilet pan from piles (haemarrhoids). However, if you are over 40 it raises the possibility of cancer particularly if associated with a change in bowel habit to looser stools. Anyone over 60 with rectal bleeding should be checked, and blood mixed in with the stool is also more concerning. Unexpected and significant weight loss can also be a sign. If in doubt, you should check with your GP. I’m shortly off on a 3 month trip to work in Africa to work in a clinic in a small town on the edge of Lake Malawi. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and the clinic is run on a charitable basis, offering free care to the local population. The clinic is their only source of healthcare. So next month, rather than concentrating on a specific health topic, I hope to write about our African experiences.

The benefits of Aloe Vera By Jane Foers Aloe vera has been used for centuries to treat a wide range of disorders and has consequently earned a variety of nicknames such as the potted physician, first aid plant, burns plant, medicine plant and silent healer – in fact, the Japanese nickname of Isha Izaru literally means ‘no need for a doctor’. The plant is a member of the lily family and can be traced back to Ancient Egypt. According to ancient texts, Nefertiti, Cleopatra and even Alexander the Great were all fans of it’s healing and ‘beautifying’ properties. It was later used as a natural medicine during voyages exploring the new world and gradually introduced to this country in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, it is a common ingredient in many personal care products and as more people are turning to natural ways to improve their health or alleviate common ailments, it is

Aloe vera can help to moisturise and reduce pigment formation in skin

perhaps one of the most versatile nutritional supplements available – the gel can even be consumed as a daily drink or ‘tonic’.

So, what it is that makes this plant so special? Each leaf contains over 75 known ingredients consisting of minerals, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, natural sugars, sterols and salicylic acid. It is believed the way these ingredients work together in perfect ‘symmetry’ is the key to what gives aloe vera it’s unique healing abilities. The plant is well documented for being highly effective on damaged skin and can help to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and promote healing with minimal scar formation. Chronic skin complaints such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, ulcers and fungal skin infections can all benefit from its properties; it has an ability to moisturise and reduce pigment formation in the skin and can be formulated as a natural sunscreen. It can be highly beneficial in easing disorders of the stomach and bowel due to its effects on bowel function and as a natural ‘balancer’ of gut bacteria and can also be of benefit to your immune system (aloe can be called an immunomodulator). In the words of Christopher Columbus ‘four vegetables are indispensable for the wellbeing of man: wheat, the grape, the olive and the aloe. The first nourishes him, the second raises his spirit, the third brings him harmony, and the fourth cures him’ As with all supplements, it is always advisable to speak to your GP for advice.

The truth about Garra Rufa Fsssh Spa A fish spa pedicure is a beauty treatment that involves immersing the feet in a tank of water containing Garra Rufa fish, which nibble off dead and thickened skin. While this is a long-established practice in Turkey, India and the Far East, it has only recently gained popularity in the UK. Due to the number of enquiries received about the safety of this practice, earlier this year the HPA, Health Protection Scotland and the Health & Safety Laboratory agreed to review the available evidence and produce guidance to minimize any potential risk of infection. On the basis of the evidence identified and the view of experts, the risk of infection from a fish pedicure is likely to be very low. By following the recommendations outlined in the guidance, premises providing fish pedicures and members of the public considering this treatment can ensure that they minimize any potential risk.

Dealing with Visual Stress Visual stress, also known as Meares-Irlen Syndrome is a sensitivity to visual patterns, particularly stripes. In some individuals this condition can cause visual perceptual problems which interfere with reading. The symptoms can occur despite normal vision. The signs of Visual Stress can include: • • • • • • •

Visual Stress and Photosensitive Migraine attacks have many

triggers, including stress, particular foods and hormones. About 40% of migraine attacks may be visually-induced by flickering light, patterns or reading. These attacks may be helped by precision tinted lenses. Recent research has shown that a suppression of hyperexcitability in the visual cortex occurs in migraineurs when individually selected precision tinted lenses are worn. Symptoms of Visual Stress

Movement of the printed text. Blurring of print Letters changing size of shape Patterns in the print Halos or colours surrounding letters or words • Tiring easily whilst reading • Headaches or visual discomfort • Red, sore, watery eyes

Is this Dyslexia? ‘Dyslexis’ is a term used to refer to reading problems that are not due to poor teaching. Dyslxia is often associated with spelling difficulty. Visual Stress is NOT the same as dyslexia but is more common in those who are dyslexic. People who fail to read because of visual stress are frequently mis-

diagnosed as dyslexic. For this reason it is important that the existence of visual stress is identified at an early stage. Once the visual stress has been treated, the remaining problems are more easily dealt with. A solution Visual stress can be reduced by the use of coloured filters: a coloured overlay placed over text or coloured lenses worn in spectacles. The reduction only occurs when the colour is selected to suit the individual. A full eye examination is necessary before prescribing precision tinted lenses. Kenyon Opticians specialize in using the Intuitive Colorimeter which specifies the most suitable colour. If short or long sighted lenses are needed, these can be incorporated into the coloured lenses. If you think you or someone you might know suffers from Visual Stress, pop into:

Colorimetry Assessment:

Every child who displays problems with reading should be referred to an optometrist for a full vision test. Kenyon Opticians specialise in using the Intuitive Coloromiter. If a prescription for long or short sight is needed, this can be incorporated into the coloured lenses.

An assessment with overlays can be performed by a qualified optometrist. They may suggest the patient use an overlay and return within a few weeks, noting any improvements. Alternatively, where the benefit from an overlay is clear, the optometrist may suggest moving directly to testing with the Intuitive Colorimeter.

If overlays are beneficial the Optometrist may prescribe spectacles with coloured lenses. The colour will be more specific to each individual’s needs, much more precise than the overlay and very often a different colour to the overlay.

What did Hippocrates and the Hopi Indians ever do for us? Since 450BC Hippocrates has been known as the ‘father of medicine’. This early Greek physician gave his name to the Hippocratic Oath and many graduating doctors still swear an updated version of his oath – to do no harm to patients. Hippocrates wisely said: ‘the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day.’ And two millennia later, we are still having aromatic baths to ease our ailments or relax in uplifting essential oils. These days though, the physician who recommends a steep in scented unguents is rare. But if you are suffering from stress, recurrent colds or aching muscles you can still call on the expertise of a welltrained aromatherapist who can tap into this ancient knowledge of plants and their healing properties. Aromatherapy is an holistic approach to wellbeing and is a natural way of helping your body to heal itself and to stay healthy. How does it work? A reputable aromatherapist will blend essential oils tailored to each client’s case history on that particular day. The most usual treatment is to massage that unique blend into the skin.

Local aromatherapist, Jenny Hakney, of Garden Aromas considers the link between two ancient cultures and modern-day therapies such as essential oils and Hopi ear candles.

Massage is known to lower blood pressure, calm the breathing and stimulate circulation. The tiny molecules of essential oil are carried by the bloodstream to all parts of the body. Here they boost the body’s immunity to infection, virus or disease and can alter your mood. Hopi Indians are a tribe of native American people living in Arizona. Known as the ‘peaceful people’ they traditionally possess plant-based medicinal knowledge and live in tune with the land. Whether they invented ear candles or not, they are credited with passing this practice into Western culture. Putting burning candles into your ears? Not a good idea – and not what Hopi ear candles are. The ‘candles’ are rolled tubes of waxed linen impregnated with soothing essential oils. While you relax on a couch the therapist holds the tube just inside your ear. The warmth

I use semi-cured chorizo (available from Krave) in this sauce, just add to the oil in step 1. For 2 to 4 people depending on the way it is used. • A really good glug of good olive oil • 2 tins of the best plum tomato’s you can find chopped very small • 1 medium onion chopped fine dice • 3 cloves of garlic minced • 1 teaspoon paprika, you can use smoked or sweet for a different taste • A few sprigs of marjoram chopped • 1 Tbsp sugar • A slug of vinagre de jerez (sherry vinegar) to taste • Salt and pepper to taste Over a medium heat add oil to a frying pan then the onion and cook until translucent, do not brown. Now add the garlic and paprika and gently fry for a few minutes. Then the tomato’s, marjoram and cook gently for around 10 minutes. Add the sugar, season then stir and after a couple of minutes taste. The last step is to add a good

slug of sherry vinegar and stir. When you have added this and cooked for a few minutes taste and adjust using either the vinegar, seasoning, sugar or all 3. Do not cook this sauce down too much it should be fresh and not too rich. Now you can sit your fish or chicken into the sauce and let it slowly cook through, sprinkle with more Marjoram and enjoy!!
