Really ? Autumn ..... Already ? It can’t be ... surely we are still enjoying the Summer Holidays. So, the children go back to school at the beginning of the month. I’m sure some parents are looking forward to getting back into the routine of the school run, some of you, that have been lucky enough to stay at home with your children all 6 weeks, will no doubt be dreading the alarm clock going off ... no more lazy mornings in front of the TV, wearing only your PJ’s for the day. September ... the month after August, the month that Bingley has their first ever mini festival on the Town Square. It’s a combination of Bingley Show v. Bingley Music Live, with live bands, entertainment over 3 days / evenings. We are delighted to be featuring this in the magazine, and would encourage all of you locals out there, to support it ! Come down into your Town Square, enjoy the music, the entertainment, the Beer, the Cider, and hopefully the Sunshine - fingers crossed. There will be plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied, whilst mum and dad try out over 12 real ales from across Yorkshire and beyond! Read our write up about it on pages 22 and 24. Other than Bingley Festival, which is named Bingley - A taste of Yorkshire and Beyond. There is plenty more to read over your cuppa this month. We have a couple of brand new contributors to the magazine, which I am very excited about. Alan Molyneux will be writing a humorous column for us, whilst David Petyt, who has a love for all things trains, will be contributing to the magazine covering all sorts of topics. Don’t forget - Bingley - A Taste of Yorkshire and Beyond 13th, 14th and 15th September in YOUR Town Square ..... Please come and support it !! That’s all for now. Kimberley

You are never too old to try something new! We are delighted to welcome Bingley Hub’s brand new contributor, David Petyt; a former menswear retailer, now retired, who has 6 grandchildren, and enjoys spending his time gardening at home and on the KWVR line as a volunteer, Airedale Hospital and Keighley in Bloom. By David Petyt

When I retired a few years ago, I knew I had to keep myself busy and had in mind to take classes in drawing, painting, photography and go walking. In the event, I noticed that one of the station gardens on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway was not looking as good as it did previously, so I offered to do a bit of gardening. I knew nothing about trains and engines but I had followed the story of the railway through the local press. It wasn’t long before someone said “you can’t do gardening in winter, why don’t you learn how to sell tickets?” Now, this got interesting and suddenly I was learning, not just about tickets, but I was meeting new friends and meeting members of the public and at the same time learning how the railway operated. I discovered what a happy friendly bunch of people the other volunteers were and it wasn’t many weeks before I 4

My Community HUB

had my first certificate and was qualified as a booking clerk. Next up, was the challenge of checking tickets on the train itself and another qualification followed as I chatted to passengers and met more people. In December came the Santa Season and I turned into a steward in charge of a carriage full of excited children and adults and I had a brilliant fun time, helping them to make sure they all had a brilliant fun time. A bit later on I was training again, this time to be a Station Foreman, which is someone who is in charge of a station for the day in the absence of the station master. For this I needed to learn about lots of signalling, safety systems, what to do in emergencies and many other things. It took a while but it is a very responsible position and I was delighted when I had another metaphorical feather in my cap.

The next challenge for me was how to operate a level crossing because we have two of these, one at Damems and the other at Oakworth station where “The Railway Children” film was made. This also involves learning lots more signals and safety systems, but it’s good to be on the platform when a train draws in and some comedian sticks his head out of the window and shouts “Good Morning, Mr Perks”. We’re all Mr Perks for the day, and there are always visitors who want to know about the Railway Children. I am really glad I joined the Railway when I retired, I knew nothing about trains at the time and I discovered that you don’t need to know, someone will teach you what you need. We have loads of different jobs from gardening, painting, building, mending carriages or steam engines, working in shops, tea bars or pulling pints on the trains. Why don’t you come and join us? Phone 01535 645214 for more Information.

Feral cats are one of the most mis-understood group of cats in the world The term “feral” simply means “living in an undomesticated state” or “not tamed”, many people mistakenly believe that cats that are badly behaved are feral, that feral cats are aggressive and can inherit wild genes from their parents or are fierce or scared because it is in their genetic make up. Nothing could be further from the truth. Feral cats, are simply cats who have not been fortunate enough to have the benefit of being handled as kittens. The time in a cat’s life when it forms impressions about its surroundings is the very short window between the ages of two weeks and seven weeks. If a kitten is not handled during those weeks, and not given the chance to learn to trust humans, it may take many months to re-educate the kitten or young adult to teach it to trust people, and in some cases it may simply never happen. But is a feral cat dangerous? The simple answer is, basically, no. Like any small animal, a cat can be chased and eaten by a larger animal. To a feral cat, a human being will appear like any other large animal, and the feral cat will simply run away if approached. The only exceptions to this are cats who are cornered (and once they can see an escape route they usually take it) and nursing queens who may lash out to protect their kittens. Generally speaking, however, a feral cat will simply see a human as a large and dangerous thing which might eat it, and it will run away as quickly as possible to try and escape. If a feral cat is caught, it will do its best to escape and will bite and scratch to free itself, but will not stay around to inflict more damage on its captor once it has managed to escape its clutches. Can feral cat genes be passed down through generations? Again, the answer is no. Cats are very much creatures of habit, and once a young kitten is habituated to people, it will remain tame, irrespective of its background. We have seen situations in the past where a completely tame mother has given birth to a litter of kittens which have not received early handling and grown up feral. Then one of the kittens 10

|

My Community HUB

Beryl Meryl has had kittens herself which were handled, and these kittens were completely tame. All the cats lived in a home, not even outside, which goes to show that a cat can become feral even when it lives inside. People often assume that cats which bite or scratch are feral cats, but in fact if a cat allows itself to be stroked and then turns round and swipes or scratches, it is not a feral cat – it is a bad-tempered cat, or one which has not had boundaries set in the past. There is probably more to fear from a bad-tempered non-feral cat than there is from a feral cat. If you know a feral cat, perhaps there is one living near you, make sure it has somewhere dry to sleep, get it neutered to stop it breeding or fighting and straying, leave food for it if you can, and let it continue its life in the familiar routine which it has developed. You will do more good for it if you just keep a friendly eye out for it, than you will if you try to tame it or worse still try to corner it. Beauty

Top tips for Autumn beauty By Jane Richards With temperatures starting to fall in the Autumn, its nice to get your beauty regime in order ready for the cold days to follow. I have put together a few helpful tips for the following months to come. Moisturising Lip Balm It’s always important to keep your lips nourished in the winter

as the cold temperatures can play havoc with them, resulting in a dry cracked painful pucker. So keep a small tin of Vaseline in your bag to keep your lips feeling more supple. Hydrating the skin If you work in an office then the chances are the thermostat will be cranked up to make

working conditions more cosier and bearable over the cold months. When leaving for the outdoors, the drop in temperature can quickly dehydrate the skin. So to protect from dryness choose a moisturiser that will nourish and quench your skin and apply morning and night to keep your skin radiant in the Autumn. Waterproof mascara Switch to a waterproof mascara for the Autumn, as walking outside with the cold wind whipping in your face can make your eyes water causing “black tears’ to run down your face. This will prevent a make-up disaster before you hit the office/work etc. Replenishing hair products When choosing your hair products for the up and coming Autumn months, it’s always best to choose a replenishing Shampoo/ Conditioner. This will help prevent dull/dry hair caused by wind, rain and indoor heating. Finally .... keep smiling as Autumn can set some beautiful scenes and summer will be back around before you know it !!!! Do you believe in Fairies? By Peter Rushworth Well do you? There have been many fairies in folk tales and literature over the centuries. In J M Barrie’s book “Peter Pan” we learn that the beginning of fairies was when the first baby laughed for the first time. “It’s laugh broke into a thousand pieces and they all went skipping about and that was the beginning of fairies.” And Peter tells us that every time a child says “I don’t believe in fairies” there is a fairy somewhere that falls down dead. Tinker Bell is the fairy in “Peter Pan”. There have, of course, been many fairies in stories over the years and there have been many songs including “Nobody Loves a Fairy When She’s Forty” sung by the late. well-overweight comedienne Tesse O’Shea. And here in Yorkshire the Cottingley Fairies caused a stir in 1917 when two young girls, Elsie and Frances, showed photographs of fairies which they said they had taken near the beck which ran past their house in Cottingley. Throughout the Nation great interest was shown in the photographs. They were examined by experts who judged them genuine. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a qualified doctor, and author of the Sherlock Homes stories believed in them.

Cottingley Beck, where Frances and Elsie claimed to have seen the fairies Picture by Paul Glazzard The story persisted for many years and it wasn’t until 1983 that Elsie and Francis (then 81 and 78 respectively) confessed that it had been a hoax. They had, they said, cut out illustrations of fairies from books, placed then in position in the beck and amongst the bushes and then taken the photographs. Even so I guess that people will continue to speak of the Cottingley Fairies for many, many years. And a building firm, David Wilson Homes, has shown delightful imagination. They have built an estate of houses on a plot which backs onto the famous beck and have called the four roads Lysander Way, Titania Close, Oberon Way and Goodfellow Close. Lysander is a character in William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer-night’s Dream” The other three are fairies in the same play. So, do you believe in fairies ?

Steel staircase damaging one of Bradford’s finest beauty spots By Chris Thompson I have grown up around, and been visiting Goit Stock Waterfall for over 30 years and of all the places I have travelled, it is still one of my favourite unspoilt spots. Until recently the arrival of a particularly ugly galvanised steel staircase has changed the view of this rural beauty spot. My heart sank when I first saw it walking up there with my family and this prompted me to start my facebook page and campaign to try and get it removed or replaced, to return the water fall to its original state. There have been many views put across to me regarding its installation of which most agree that something that big, hideous and unsympathetic to the area is an eyesore and simply isn’t required. I have always been a strong believer in either leaving things the way they are in the countryside and if some sort of access is required due to complaints about it being dangerous then keep it minimal and make it in keeping with the area. Access is never easy in certain beauty spots and there will always be an element of risk even for the fittest of people as you can never account for human error and this applies even more when it involves a waterfall and height. By installing over the top staircases and railings might help to reduce accidents in one certain spot but bad decisions will always come into play and accidents will occur at another spot so where does it end. Risks are a part of everyday life and if you don’t pay attention to them and make bad decisions they will usually end in accidents regardless of what provisions are made. The same applies to the Goit Stock waterfall walk, its 16

My Community HUB

a challenge and even more so in wet and icy conditions where surely common sense has to come into play; when its obvious its slippery. The replacement choice of railings many years ago has always been unattractive but a barrier is required due to the land falling away towards the stream and was originally a timber fence many years ago. This was a lazy decision to make them out of (no maintenance) galvanised steel and no thought had gone into their design in regard to the materials used and what impact they would have on the view and the same appears to have happened with this staircase. Surely we need someone who respects the countryside to be making the decisions on our rights of way. And surely ancient natural places like Goit Stock Waterfall should be protected like listed buildings when

access works are required. This staircase may also have made access easier up the climbing section but the path gets difficult and slippery on the top anyway, so accidents will just occur further up. Myself and many others feel a small wooden stile ladder similar to the type used in the dales but with non-slip treads or even stone built steps would have made the particular tricky bit easier and more in keeping with the area. Thanks to the 240+ supporters I have received in less than a week from my facebook page (Goit stock Removal of Ladder Page) which has acted like a petition and numerous letters and emails to the various people we have managed to arrange a meeting with the council where I am hoping the council can shed some light on why the decision was made and what can be done to replace it.

You’re as young as you feel... I would like to welcome on board our new contributor Alan, who lives in Bingley with his wife Beverley and divides his time between writing, delivering management training courses, working for a local church, and looking after his two grandchildren. He will be writing a monthly humorous column for Hub readers to enjoy. So kick back, grab a coffee and have a right good read! Alan Molineaux MA Some things have happened recently that have made me feel old. At first I was concerned but I now seem to have found a way of dealing with this revelation. The first was during one of those quick shopping trips on the way home from work. I dashed around the isles getting the four urgent items and joined the tea-time queue of other weary travellers in a similar position; all wondering why there was only one till open at such a busy time. I looked around the store at the other workers and had to wonder why folding empty cardboard boxes was more important than serving customers. When it was my turn to be scowled at by the shop assistant I readied myself to pay and was asked to enter my PIN number. For the life of me I could not remember it. It had gone from my mind and I couldn’t find it anywhere. I stood for a moment as if I was trying to understand the theory of relativity but nothing would come into my mind. I managed to pay for the few items with the collection of loose change I carry around with me because I am too lazy to empty my pockets. I remembered the number just as I arrived home but that didn’t stop me worrying ever so slightly. The next episode was whilst watching the telly. I had always been aware that TV viewing with older people can be a painful experience. My father had ruined many a good show by insisting that the quizzes were fixed and that none of what you see is true. Now it seems that he was right all along. I now watch the programmes with the same degree of cynicism and, in the process, annoy my own children. ‘Game shows are designed to make you feel guilty’ I explain to my long suffering daughters. The number of times the host says ‘The 18

|

My Community HUB

contestants will lose their chance to dance again next week unless you phone in and vote for them’ or ‘Their whole future in the jungle relies on your vote’. Apparently it is my fault that these celebrities don’t make it. Such pressure! I say all this to my daughters and they look at me like I looked at my father; I know it is a sign of my youth slipping away. The final example was fuelled by recent football events and the fate of the England team. My wife, noticing my malaise, tried to cheer me up by reminding me that it was ‘only a game’. This didn’t work even though she seemed to enjoy the conversation. ‘Now I will have to wait until the World Cup!’ I said trying to offer an explanation for my state of mind. Then it came to me that, even if I reach three score years and ten, I only have five World Cups left to enjoy. Forgetting my pin number is one thing. Getting annoyed at the TV is another. Having only five of the most important football competition is just too big to cope with. My wife, who also looked a little shocked at this, tried to come to my aid by reminding me that I do have the possibility of sixteen FA cup finals. It helped but I needed more! ‘How many premiership matches might I have?’ I asked, searching for comfort. A quick calculation showed that I had well over 700 to work with; all was not lost. I started to breathe again and reflected on the fact that if you count all international matches, including friendlies, it is probably reaching nearly the thousand mark. By now I was on a role and working out other leagues and football competitions. It was good to feel young again. In fact my wife tells me that I haven’t ever really grown up, which I think was a compliment. So my advice to you if you are feeling old is not count your life in World Cups; make the most of every game you can find.

Make the most of Autumn At Woodbank we love September, as summer blooms fade, fruit is ready to harvest and another colourful season in the garden commences. Autumn is a fabulous season, its a great time to get your garden tidied up and ready for winter before the dark nights draw in.

September weather is always difficult to forecast but don’t give up on using your garden for dining. Keep an umberella to hand when barbecuing, warm yourself on chillier evenings with a chiminea, invest in some romantic outdoor lighting and enjoy alfresco dining throughout Autumn!

What do you want to see in your garden September is in some ways, the New Year of gardening. Like January, it is a good time to reassess your garden for the

following year. Autumn is nature’s planting time! Plants planted in the Autumn/early Winter have the very best chance of fully establishing and they require minimum maintenance. By late Spring / early Summer they will have optimum conditions for flourishing as they have had plenty of time to really establish their roots. This is therefore an excellent time to

make planned changes to your garden layout, create new and interesting areas, have a complete garden re-design or even finally plant those longed for and coveted specimen shrubs and trees. If you want to fill your garden with colour next spring, plant bulbs from now until December, before the first frost. Daffodils, tulips, crocus, grape hyacinths and fritillarias are just some of the plants to choose from.

Come and see us online Search Woodbank nurseries - harden on Facebook

Gifts that grow! Nobody likes to hear the word Christmas this early, but there are many things you can do in the garden to get ready for the festive season and now is the time to start planting. If you plant seed potatoes in September in a pot, you can grow a crop to serve with your festive turkey. The plants need to establish before the first

next year?

frosts when they should be brought indoors to a sheltered spot. Keep watering and earthing up until December and dig up your crop of new potatoes on Christmas Eve. Enjoy the intoxicating fragrance of hyacinths and the dramatic blooms of amaryllis, ‘Paper White’ daffodils and other bulbs for Christmas and New Year. These bulbs are readily available and easy to grow indoors in just a few months. They will make colourful Christmas presents. You may have noticed that we have closed our Growzone down for seasonal preparations and we are looking forward to unveiling our SantaLand in November. We hope everybody has had a good summer and that everybody achieved the exam results they needed. Going back to school is never easy, especially for Mums and Dads rushing round getting everybody ready. The Potting Shed Restaurant is a great place to meet up for coffee and refresh yourself after the school run. We have missed our regular Mums and Dads and look forward to seeing them again. We have a great Autumn menu and we cater for all dietary requirements. Please let us know of any specific requests, we are happy to modify our dishes.

Bingley - A Taste of Yorkshire and Beyond 13th, 14 & 15th September By Kimberley Devine-Harrup Editor I am pleased to announce that Bingley will once again be buzzing in the Town Square, with the introduction of a brand new mini festival, a combination of a Bingley Show, mixed with a Bingley Music Live event. A family friendly festival for all age groups to enjoy. The event, which is to take place on the 13th,

14th and 15th September, is a first for Bingley residents, and we are all hoping that this will be the start of something great for the Town Centre and its businesses, and if it is successful, will continue to be an annual event. The idea came from husband and wife team Lisa and Lee Wolstenholme, who are current Landlords at the Library Tap in the town, after a conversation they had with a local Councillor. After speaking with Town Centre Manager, Bob Parker, and having the event approved; Lee and Lisa set the ball rolling.

So, what can you expect to see over the 3 days? Library Tap Marquee The Library Tap will have a Marquee on the Town Square, and will be serving up to 12 local real ales and 6 ciders. As well as soft drinks and bottles. You will expect to see Live Music in the marquee, which all of the acts playing are local bands from the area. Some will play their own music, some will play covers. There will be a mixture of acoustic rock, indie, 22

Paul from Rawdon It takes great food to make me travel to a different area to collect a takeaway and that’s exactly what I get when I drive round to Wilsden Balti. The food is superb; consistent restaurant quality I haven’t found at any other takeaway and so I am not just happy to travel there, I am determined to travel there.

Community Food There will be a HOG ROAST on offer over the 3 days. Also, Jamie’s Ministry of Food will be there, demonstrating food recipes throughout the weekend. Bradford Markets are encouraging food traders, selling foods that will compliment the Beer / Cider tent to get in touch with them. Infamous: Zippy

Health Matters

Dealing with Low Back Pain One of the commonest problems we see in General Practice is low back pain. Around 8 out of 10 people will get back problems at some point in their life. Pain can be quite severe and debilitating, and often causes a lot of anxiety about what is causing the pain and what the future holds. In most cases however, back pain is not related to a serious back problem, and will resolve relatively quickly. The usual advice is to keep active and carry on with your normal activities as much as possible. However, if pain is “chronic” (in medical terms, this means persistant ie. lasting several weeks) or there are “red-flags” present then further assessment may be needed.

Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery in the Canalside Healthcare Centre in Bingley, will be sharing with The Hub readers exclusive advice on topical health issues and giving his tips for a healthy life. Structure of the back The lower back, the lumbosacral spine, extends from the bottom of the ribs to the coccyx (tail bone). There are a series of bones called vertebrae, with shock-absorbing discs inbetween, called vertebral discs. These are all kept together with strong ligaments to support the back. Muscles attach to the spine to allow us to move. Inside the vertebrae is the spinal cord; nerves pass out of the cord to control our legs. These nerves run right next to the discs and vertebrae. What causes low back pain? Often it is impossible to tell the exact cause of back pain. Non-specific back pain is by far the commonest cause, accounting for around 19 out of 20 bad backs. It is impossible to tell from examination or XRaying or scanning what the cause is. It is probably related to sprain of muscles or ligaments. In these cases, further tests are usually unnecessary, as there is no test that can prove or confirm non-specific back pain. Guidelines in the UK are quite clear that routine tests such as scans and Xrays should not be done for a diagnosis of non-specific back pain. However, there are some situations where it is very important for back pain to be assessed: 1. Chronic pain – if your pain slowly gets worse over days and weeks 2. Weakness or numbness in legs or feet, as this may be a sign of nerve irritation 3. Signs that nerves are being squashed ie. Numbness around the anus, bladder symptoms, incontinence of poo 4. An injury to the spine that may have caused a fracture, especially if you have osteoporosis 5. Pain in older people associated with general symptoms such as weight loss or fever. If you have any of these “red flags” you should see your GP. Continued on page 28

Offer ends 30th September 2013.

Health Matters What can I do if I have non-specific back pain? The best thing you can do is to keep active, and continue normal activities as much as possible. The pain may be particularly bad for the first day or two and it may be difficult, but try not to rest if you can, and if you have to for no longer than 48 hours. Too much rest makes the back worse, and you’ll have to accept some discomfort when you are trying to get active. Simple painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be effective and help get you active again if you’re limited by the pain. Some people are concerned that they may be “masking the pain and causing more damage” but this is simply not the case. It is better to take pain killers if it allows you to get more mobile than it is not to take something and be less active.

If your pain seems slow to settle, you may choose to see a physio, osteopath or chiropractor. All can help. There may also be some benefit from doing specific exercises at home, there is an excellent page on the arthritis UK website (/ www.arthritisresearchuk.org/arthritis-information/ conditions/back-pain/back-pain-exercises). Pet advice

Enjoying the summer weather? By Peter Eccles Airedale Veterinary Group I hope that, like me, you have been enjoying the weather this summer, probably the hottest summer since 1976. The trouble is that fleas also like hot summers. Their life cycle speeds up so they can breed more, resulting in higher numbers of fleas than normal. The problem builds up through the summer & then September is usually the worst month for fleas. At Airedale Vets we are already seeing a lot of cats & dogs with bad flea problems. A survey showed that a dog or cat can have up to six fleas & most owners will not notice that their pet has any. One flea can lay up to fifty eggs a day, these eggs are non sticky & look like dandruff & they drop off into your carpets, settee, etc. One of the commonest problems seen by vets in dogs, cats & rabbits are skin problems caused by fleas. In September, Vets always see a large number of dogs, cats & rabbits with problems caused by fleas. So many owners feel foolish when they find out that the skin problem their pet has is caused by fleas. Myomatosis is spread by fleas. Preventing the problems before it starts is better for the pet & cheaper than treating a problem after it starts. One of the problems is that people like to stick with familiar brands. Most popular brands will be improved on a regular basis, so for example Fairy washing powder will have been improved many times in the last 20 years. The most commonly used flea product used in the UK is a spot on treatment. The active ingredient in this product has been used as a pesticide for over thirty years in this county. This flea product has not been improved since it was first used in the UK. Many vets have noticed an increasing resistance problem with this product. Much newer more versetile products now exist. 30

For example there is a newer spot on product that not only is great at killing fleas on your pet, it also kills fleas in the house. It also kills mange mites, ear mites, lice, round worm, hookworm, whipworm, lungworm & fox lungworm. Unfortunately for legal reason I can not mention the name of this product: ring your local vet for details.
