Bradford is the world’s first UNESCO City of Film. This permanent title bestows international recognition on Bradford as a world centre for film because of the city’s rich film heritage, its inspirational movie locations and its many celebrations of the moving image through the city’s annual film festivals. The Spring/Summer programme also includes the new Bradford Festival (10-16 June) which blends some of the most successful elements of past events in a vibrant and multicultural programme of high quality international, British and local theatre, art, music and dance. The climax of the Bradford Festival includes the New Mela (16 June), a family-friendly colourful fusion of international culture, Bradford community and food for families.

It will also feature incredible, cutting edge British street theatre by Without Walls. The following week, the World Curry Festival returns with mouth-watering spicy dishes from local and national curry houses. For people interested in contemporary culture, the Urban Festival (15-18 May) explores 21st century artistic, technological and recreational possibilities of cities. Children will be entertained every Saturday between 30 March and 4 May with free screenings of Back to the Future (PG), Madagascar 3 (U), Tinkerbell & The Secret of the Wings (U), Aladdin (U), Beauty and the Beast (U) and Toy Story (U) on Bradford’s Big Screen. Bradford Council’s events programme is part of a long-term strategy to bring more residents and visitors into Bradford city centre and stimulate economic growth. Over 20,000 flocked to see the grand opening of City Park last March. Garden of Light, a huge light sculpture installation and Bradford’s avant-garde Christmas lights switch on also attracted significant crowds into the city centre in 2012. Last year Bradford city centre retailers reported an upturn in sales since City Park opened. Coun Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Employment, Skills and Culture, said: “The Council and our partners have worked very hard to put this fantastic programme together. “Last year’s programme was a resounding success. City Park events attracted just over 220,000 people into the city centre and feedback from visitors was incredibly positive. We estimate that as a result an additional £2.6m was spent by people in Bradford’s shops, hotels and restaurants. This year’s programme promises to be just as exciting.”

Bingley History - A Photographic Timeline In previous editions of My Community Hub we have presented a collage of photographs of Main Street. These are intended to capture the changes (or not) which have taken place to some notable landmarks (past and present) in Bingley over the last 120 or so years. This month shows the changes to the road leading off Main Street and formerly known as Toad Lane but renamed Park Road as the road leading to Prince of Wales Park which was opened in the 1860’s Toads and Frogs! Two bogs, the North and South bogs have been a feature of the Bingley landscape since early times and were home to thousands of toads, frogs and at one time, lizards. Speight (1898) in Chronicles of Old Bingley recalls that witnesses had told him “thousands of toads have been seen crossing the neck of land between the two mires. Park Road (up to 1863 when the first sod of the Prince of Wales Park was cut) had always been known for this reason as Toad Lane” Grammar School Buildings 1604 Dodd (1958) Bingley refers to “ancient buildings on the corner of Toad Lane”. This land was owned by Bingley Grammar School and had been bought by the Trustees in 1604. The school consisted of a handful of boys taught by one master in a room of a house at the corner of Toad Lane.

1968 Road and bridge widening in Park Road

1980 Park Road

Changes 1850’s Hartley (1900) in 50 years of Cooperation in Bingley (1900) states that “Bingley Town in 1850 may be said to have been located almost entirely on one side of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. What is now Park Road was known by the not very euphonious name of Toad Lane, and was a somewhat narrow roadway, and a narrow sidewalk on one side only. On the right in coming from the Main Street and nearly opposite the gates to the National School (now apartments) was a stile leading into fields, which was then a delightful path for a stroll..... all land bordering on Toad Lane on both sides was then agricultural land. None of the houses now dotting the hillside were then built, with the exception of Gawthorpe Hall, Beck House and the Old Vicarage”. 1860’s The change of name in 1863 to Park Road heralded the first of a number of occasions on which the road would be widened and improved. A significant event during this period was the Boiler Explosion at Town’s Bobbin Mill in 1869 where 15 adults and children were killed and many injured. The National School which the children attended was used as both a hospital and a mortuary. 1870’s The main elements of building, from the corner of Main Street and leading up the steep hill to the Prince of Wales Park, occurred during a period starting in the early 1870’s. By 1876, commenting in the Bradford Observer, Cudworth noted “The last 15 years have been very prolific in new buildings, but the greatest increase has taken place in the Park Road direction, or as it is now called “New Bingley”. Here places of worship, huge mills and streets of houses have risen up as if by enchantment” Continued on page 12

1880’s Between 1889 and 1892 as a result of initiatives proposed by the Bingley Improvement Commissioners, Park Road was again widened. This was made possible by the exchange of lands with the Bingley Grammar School Governors as regards their ancient property at the corner of Park Road. In later years buildings of a more public character including the Craven Bank and Martin’s Bank would occupy this position. Our Photographs These are intended to show significant changes and views of Park Road from 1900 and covering major improvements at the bottom end of Park Road during 1968, the 1980’s and 1992. Whilst this article and the photographs may give a flavour of the history and changes they do not claim to be an exhaustive record.

Thanks Our thanks go to Bradford Libraries Local History and Sue Caton, Bingley Local History Society -Stanley Varo, the late Graham Carey, Friends of Bingley College, The Graham Hill Archives, Mick Walmsley - Woodbank Nurseries, Harden, for permission to use some of their images. Dates Dates attributed to the photographs are in a limited number of cases speculative and are based on clues within the photographs e.g shops, clothing of pedestrians etc. If you have knowledge of any of these and can provide more accurate dating, we would be really pleased to hear from you. Alan Cattell - Bingley, April 2013

A fascinating history book by My Community Hub writer Alan Cattell Alan Cattell’s local history book Bingley and Surrounds Forgotten Moments from History has received good reviews locally for its readability and informative style of writing. Part of Alan’s reason for writing the book was to bring history out of the archives and into the living room of those interested in local history. The other reason was to be able to donate

some of the researched content and proceeds to local archives. To date Shipley College, Saltaire Archives have received a donation to set up a Japanese Gardens archive. Several local primary schools have also been given copies of the book to use as teaching resources. Alan thanks all those who have bought the book to date for their support in enabling this to happen.

Cat’s Corner mmunity Hub is nthly feature, My Co ing In our continuing mo you up to date news of what is happen pleased to be bringingWe are pleased to be working with such r e. at the homing centr ich helps re-home unwanted cats in ou wh ty, ari ch a fantastic region.

Taking care of kittens There’s nothing nicer than seeing a mother cat suckling her tiny kittens, all cosy and warm and snuggled up together. The gentle sound of purring from mum cat adds to the sense of harmony and well-being, and is a sound that cat-lovers the world over relate to and enjoy. But for some kittens, separated from their mothers before they are old enough to eat solid food, the reality is very different. These poor creatures, unable to suckle on a near-constant basis, have to rely on a large meal every two or three hours, which despite saving their lives can leave them malnourished in the short term. Kittens may be orphaned or abandoned for many reasons. Sometimes their mothers are too ill to care for them, or sometimes the mothers die in labour or shortly afterwards; human intervention is a very common reason for kittens requiring hand-feeding – where the mother is accidentally or deliberately separated from her babies; and sometimes mother cats reject their kittens either because they themselves are ill or because they sense that the kittens are unwell or have conditions which make them unlikely to survive. Sadly, rejected kittens rarely make it, even with the most dedicated human care, but kittens who have been separated from their mothers, have a much better chance. The feeding regime is intense. The kittens require feeding every two hours for the first couple of weeks of their lives, gradually increasing to three or four hour feeds as they grow and their stomachs

become capable of taking in larger amounts. This of course places an enormous burden on the humans feeding them – requiring night feeds as well as the ability to be on-hand on a two-hourly basis during the day. The kittens need to be kept very warm – cats prefer to exist in a temperature which is approximately 6 degrees higher than humans – and the use of microwave heat pads is ideal for this purpose. One thing that many people don’t realise, is that tiny kittens need to be helped to go to the toilet. So this also has to be done by the human carers. The kittens are gently rubbed with toilet paper and this makes them “go”. Not the most pleasant of tasks but one that has to be done. There are many pitfalls to be encountered when hand-rearing kittens. One thing that often happens is that kittens inhale the milk substitute, causing pneumonia. They can also have an allergic reaction to the milk substitute or simply refuse to eat it as they don’t like the taste. Sadly, not all kittens who are hand-reared survive. Four kittens who were brought to Yorkshire Cat Rescue in mid-March are Tristan, Hamish, Bruce and Ralph. Four brothers who were separated from their mother at just two days old. Staff and volunteers at the centre worked round the clock to raise the little orphans, and, at the time of going to print, all are doing well, but there have been a few scares along the way, with all the kittens picking up a tummy bug and one of the kittens inhaling milk – which was luckily spotted straight away and able to be treated. If you find a mother cat and kittens, or if your cat has an unexpected litter, please try to keep them together until the kittens are ten weeks old and can all be neutered to prevent more unwanted babies. They have much better chance of survival and a better chance of growing up into healthy well-adjusted kittens who will make delightful pets for their loving new owners. For enquiries please call Yorkshire Cat Rescue on 01535 647184 or visit www.yorkshirecatrescue.org

Health Matters

Sleeping well?

We all need a good night’s sleep. All of us will have, at some point in our lives, experienced periods where we don’t get enough of it. That’s what we call insomnia. It makes us feel grumpy and poorly, and if it goes on for a long period it affects our physical and mental health. It’s no wonder that many patients see their GP to ask for help with difficulty sleeping. So what is sleep? It’s a period of unconsciousness during which the body recovers and repairs itself. There are 2 main stages of sleep, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep. During REM sleep we are very relaxed and our brain is very active. During non-REM sleep we may move around a little, and hormones are released to repair our bodies. We move between these two stages around 5 times a night. We will often wake when moving between stages, typically for 1-2 minutes every couple of hours or so. We aren’t usually aware of this, but these periods may be much more noticeable if we feel anxious or there is something else going on eg. A snoring partner! We all need different amounts of sleep. Babies will sleep for 17 hours, older children 9-10, and adults usually around 7-8 hours. Older people will often only have one period of deeper non-REM sleep, after which they wake more easily. Lack of sleep The odd night without sleep might make you feel tired the next day, but it will not harm your physical or mental health. If you have several nights with little sleep, you may experience tiredness, falling asleep during the day, lack of concentration, difficulty making decisions or a low mood. This can be dangerous when driving and cause accidents. It also contributes to high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. Lack of sleep is often associated with emotional problems, difficulties at work or home, thinking about day-to-day problems, anxiety and worry (eg. Money), and depression. In these cases, it is important to address the underlying reason/stress, otherwise a normal sleep pattern is unlikely to return Helping yourself There are many everyday reasons for not sleeping well that you can alter to improve your sleep, including • Having a bedroom that is too hot/cold or noisey • A partner with a different sleep pattern • Not having a regular bedtime routine • Not getting enough daytime exercise • Eating too much late in the day/evening, or going to bed hungry • Smoking cigarettes or drinking tea/coffee, particularly after mid-afternoon • An uncomfortable bed • Drinking alcohol Looking specifically at alcohol, many people have a drink believing it helps them to sleep. It may well help you to get off to the lighter REM stages of sleep, but overall you get less of the beneficial deep sleep you need and increases waking through the night, so the quality of your sleep is not so good. Alcohol also tends to lower your mood, which in turn will affect your sleep.

Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery in the Canalside Healthcare Centre in Bingley, will be sharing with The Hub readers exclusive advice on topical health issues and giving his tips for a healthy life.

Other tips that some people find helpful include • Taking time to relax before bed. • Have a regular bedtime routine. • If something is worrying you, write it down and tell yourself you’ll deal with it tomorrow. If you wake at night worrying about day-to-day problems, leave a pen and paper by your bed. • If you can’t get off to sleep, get up and do something relaxing for 15 minutes, and then try again. • Hot milky drinks do work! • Don’t watch TV in bed, it stimulates your brain. Keep bed for sleeping. • Avoid lie-ins, they make it harder to get off to sleep at night. Can medication help? People have been using sleeping tablets for years, but we try to avoid prescribing them because • They don’t work for long • They can leave you tired and irritable the next day • Your body gets tolerant to them quite quickly, so you need higher and higher doses to get the same effect • People can quite easily get addicted to them • They can have lots of side effects, effect driving, and cause falls and confusion in older people There are several remedies available at the chemist without needing a prescription. These often contain antihistamines, usually used for allergies, as one of their side effects is drowsiness. They can sometimes help, but will often leave you feeling sleepy the next morning, which may affect your work or driving. You can also get tolerant to these, so it is best not to use them for a long time. There are also herbal remedies, often based on Valerian, which may help if you take regularly for 2-3 weeks (but will not work if taken occasionally). They may also cause sleepiness the next morning, and may interact with some blood pressure medication. If you would like to give feedback or comments to Simon regarding this feature, or would like to suggest ideas for future features, please contact him through My Community Hub by emailing kim@overtmarketing.co.uk

Goings on at St Ives Is intended as an occasional feature in My Community Hub in which our local historian Alan Cattell captures some of the local news stories of the period. These show and give examples through newspaper snippets and book reports of the kind of activities which the St Ives Estate and William Ferrand were involved in.

Sham Battle at St Ives Park - October 1862 In 1860, Ferrand became Captain and Commanding Officer of the Airedale Rifles. On 6th October 1862 he organised a sham battle in St Ives park. The defending force were made up of the Bingley, Eccleshill, Guiseley and Keighley Rifles whilst the attacking force was composed of five Bradford Companies. The public were admitted to the event, special trains to Bingley were laid on and the entertainment included music by the band of the corps and fireworks in the evening. Over £60 was taken on the gate as a contribution toward Corps funds.

Funeral of a prominent leader Of Factory Reform and the Anti- Poor Law movement - Bradford Observer September 1861 “William Ferrand of St Ives, Bingley was a pall bearer of the coffin of Richard Oastler - known as “The King of Factory Children” at Kirkstall Church, Leeds in September 1861” Assistant Keeper Shot - Leeds Mercury - October 1866 “John Bairstow, Head Keeper to Mr W B Ferrand of St Ives near Bingley whilst out grouse shooting at Haworth Moor, accidentally shot his assistant John Clayton who it is supposed had risen from his hiding place to watch birds.”

To Be Let - Bradford Observer - January 1861 “The Grange” formerly known as St Ives near Bingley consisting of a large and substantial Dwelling House with extensive Farm Buildings and conveniences and about 120 acres of excellent land in a high state of cultivation” For more infomation about St Ives visit the Friends of St Ives website at www.friendsofstives.org.uk 26

Thank you to Vicky Furness from Cullingworth for sending in these two pictures of Hallas Bridge Hamlet. Here’s what Vicky told us about those few days being stranded. Dear Kimberley Hallas Bridge hamlet was cut off from Friday 22nd March until Wednesday 27th, when Bradford Council broke through Bents Lane. David and I ran out of potatoes and eggs, we were grateful for the contents of the freezer. Richard Crowther kindly walked with milk for us. When I thanked him, he said “It’s all part of the service”. Even the postman came one day, walking from Harecroft. Those who got their cars out before the drifts built up left them as far a field as Greenside Lane, Cullingworth and Stephen H Smiths garden centre. We’ll remember this Winter!!

It’s SNOW Joke …….. Did you get caught up in one of the Snow Drifts in March? Here are a few pics from our readers, showing how deep the snow was. Just as the Daffodils were coming through, and we get hit with severe weather warnings ! Some of the worst places that were hit were top

of Eldwick, near Dick Hudson’s, and Cullingworth / Wilsden. Thanks to all the readers who submitted these through our Facebook page Facebook.com/ mycommunityhub and by email / post. Continued on page 30

Think Local, Spend Local, Keep it LOCAL! Your everyday spending habits could have a huge impact on our local economy. Instead of spending with the huge Supermarkets, national chains or online, just think about what difference you could make to the place you live. The more we spend with local independents the more we put back into our own community… and if the local business owners in-turn spend their income locally, employ local people, who again spend locally! Think of it like re-cycling.

If everybody in the Bingley area spent just £10 per week with smaller independents it would put a whopping £10.4 million per year back into our local economy. Wouldn’t that be great, taking charge of investing in our own community?

Please help us spread the word and Keep it LOCAL! For our future and our children’s future, for YOUR COMMUNITY.
