Editor’s Letter Welcome You will notice a slight change to our magazine this month. Yes, we have changed the name from My Community Hub (which it always will be) to Bingley Hub. We wanted people to know that this is a Bingley magazine, for the residents of Bingley and the Rural Villages, including Wilsden, Cullingworth, Harden and now Sandy Lane. We increased our distribution to Sandy Lane area, from feedback we received on our Facebook page. Thanks to Christine McCabe from Sandy Lane, who said she always missed getting a copy in Bingley and would we be prepared to deliver in Sandy Lane. The answer was YES, of course we can. If you live in Sandy Lane and you were lucky enough to get one through your door, and liked the magazine. Please come and say hello to us on our facebook page. Just search My Community Hub, or type this link into your internet browser - www.facebook.com/ mycommunityhub. With one click it will take you directly to the page, where you will find interesting goings on, history photographs, competitions, and general chit chat! Coming up in July - the 4th to be exact, is National Independents’ Day, celebrating shopping locally. It’s vital that we spend our hard earned cash in our local community, whether it is the Butcher, Baker or Clothes Shop. There are lots of wonderful shops in Bingley, so you have lots to choose from. June is a wonderful month for many reasons - firstly, we celebrate Fathers Day on the 16th June. So why not take your Dad’s out for lunch and spoil him rotten? Also, I will be tying the knot on the 29th June to my partner Simon, who is also my partner in crime at Overt Marketing. After 11 years of a blissful relationship we have decided to make it official. In the next couple of issues, you can see some piccies of us, and also we will be promoting all the local services that we used for our Wedding ! Keep you eyes peeled. Well, that’s it for now. When I write again, I will be Mrs Devine-Harrup. Kimberley

• Just ate a whole bag of chips, but it was “reduced fat” so basically it was like going to the gym. • I hope my last words aren’t “What does this thing do?” • Laughing so hard no noise comes out so you just sit there clapping like a idiotic seal. • I don’t care how old I am. If I lose my Mom in the supermarket I will panic.

Have you got a fantastic idea for a cover? Every month we want a crazy story for the front cover, can you think of something a little bit daft? We have cinema tickets, vouchers and other great prizes to give away for the best ideas. If you have photo’s even better, if not don’t worry just send us your idea and we’ll turn it into a crazy cover. Time to get silly and creative, it’s only a bit of fun so why not send us your ideas... Friends of St Ives, Harden Win Super Hero Award Recently the Friends of St Ives were nominated by a kind Harden resident, Mrs Muriel Brown, for a Community Hero Award from the Shipley Coordinator’s office. Four of us attended the evening event and after enjoying a lovely buffet, waited to see if FOSI had won. When FOSI’s name was read out as one of the three ‘Group’ winners and then finally as the Super Hero winner, we felt very honoured on behalf of everyone involved with FOSI and quite overcome. None of us look for thanks, but it was very nice to have all the hard work acknowledged. As well as a framed certificate and a shiny engraved plate, we also received a cheque for £200 to spend on St Ives. We hope to spend this on more plants for the History/Herb Garden for everyone to enjoy. Accolate: Friends of St Ives 4

The Bingley Hub gets ready to celebrate Independents’ Day We encourage you to support your local shops on 4th July 2013 The Bingley Hub is flying the flag for local retailers in Bingley and supporting diversity on the high street. On 4th July 2013 across the country, the public will be encouraged to buy at least one item from their local, independent shop to celebrate Independents’ Day 2013. The national campaign, organised by the National Skills Academy for Retail, champions the local retailers who make the UK’s villages, towns and cities so special. With over 160,000 independent retailers making up 92% of all retail businesses in the UK, their importance to local economies as well as their contribution to a location’s identity and community is unrivaled. Jane Rexworthy, Head of the National Skills Academy for Retail said: “We are delighted to

Independents’ Day aims to highlight the huge range of skills successful independent retailers need to make our towns and cities such interesting and varied places to visit and shop. “The National Skills Academy for Retail offers a wide range of support directly to retailers to help them get ahead. It’s essential independent retailers understand that to compete today they have to have the best people as well as products, and that training and development can really make a difference.” To stay up to date with all the activities, you can follow the campaign on Twitter @Retail_ IndieDay, facebook.com/independentsday or on the news section of www.retailindieday.com

The story of Father’s Day Father’s Day is a celebration that acknowledges and appreciates the important role played by a father in raising a child and consequently building a stronger society. Though fathers have been revered at all times by civilisations across the globe ironically what was missing until the last century was the official recognition of the significance of fathers in ones life.

Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16, 2013

The Beginnings of Father’s Day Historians have recorded that there was a tradition to celebrate Father’s Day even thousands of years ago. Their study says that 4,000 years ago in Babylon a son called Elmesu carved a father’s day message on a clay card. In his message Elmesu wished his father a long and healthy life. The tradition of celebrating Father’s Day as seen today originated in the last century. Though there are several people who are credited for furthering the cause, there is far greater acceptance that a doting daughter from Spokane, Washington, Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd is recognised as the Founder or Mother of the Father’s Day Festival. When Ms Sonora heard a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909 she began to recognise the hardships her father must have gone through while bringing up his six children alone. When Sonora was 16, her mother had died during childbirth. Sonora’s father a Civil War veteran by the name of William Jackson Smart raised six children including the newborn on his own. Sonora questioned that if there is a day to recognise mothers then why is not there a day to honour fathers? The noble idea of celebrating Father’s Day became quite popular, so much so that President Woodrow Wilson approved of the festival in 1916.

Tribute to Father Fathers are the biggest source of strength for a child. The innocent eyes of a child perceive father as the all-powerful, most knowledge and truly affectionate. For daughters, fathers are the first men they adore and fall in love with. While for sons their fathers are the strongest person they know and someone they aspire to emulate. Even for the grownups fathers are someone whom they look up to for the most experienced and honest advice that is always in the best of our interest. For this great figure in our life that we know as father - it becomes our utmost duty to pay our humblest tribute on the occasion of Father’s Day.

8

| My Community HUB

President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea but it was President Lyndon Johnson who signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day.

Say Thanks to Dad on Father’s Day Children blessed with a loving father should consider themselves fortunate. For, they have someone to stop them when they are diverting to a wrong path and guide them on a road to success and virtue. Father’s Day brings with it the wonderful opportunity to apologise for all our rude and insensitive behaviour. We as children often take the love and affection of our parents for granted, we all owe a big thanks to our Dads. The idea is to show our affection and tell Daddy how much he is loved and appreciated not just on Father’s Day but every single day of our lives.

Dream Chaser

Jane reaches for her dreams In our occasional feature, The Hub talks to Jane Richards, a single mum from Cullingworth, who has always aspired to be an interior designer. From leaving school with little qualifications, to setting up her own Beauty Therapy Salon, to following her dream of becoming an interior designer, this is her story. When you think of the dream job, what do you think of? What do you aspire to be? Is it within your reach easily enough? Do the options you have at the time, make the dream possible? For me, Jane Richards, the dream of becoming an interior designer started long before I left school in the late 80’s. But after failing some of my O-Level exams, my dream of becoming an interior designer began to fade away. After attending Beauty College, I realised that I could still use my creative side to build a life long business model. A few years later, after Liam, my son was born, I opened my own beauty therapy salon in Cullingworth. Setting up a business being a single mum, was often very tiring and hard work, but I persisted. Although I love my beauty therapy, it was when I designed my salon interior, I felt those goose bumps again! I knew that I needed to follow my dream. I always loved the French sytle decor and wanted to explore this even more. After my son Liam achieved a student placement at one of London’s prestigious universities for Graphic Design, I felt inspired to finally achieve my goal. I’m so proud of what he has achieved, and knew deep down inside that I could do it too. And that’s where my business “Shabby Chic Boutique ‘Creating Memories’ was born. At first I started small, by just creating personalised crafts and giftware for friends and family. Now today my business is thriving, with most of my orders coming via Facebook. Shabby Chic Boutique ‘Creating Memories’ has dual purpose, not only does it create fantastic personalised gifts for all occasions but also allows you to delve into the world of French style decor at affordable prices. 10

Soroptimists International Keighley - for like minded Women By Kimberley Devine, Editor At a local women’s networking event recently, I met such an inspiring woman from Soroptimist International of Keighley. Moira was her name and she had attended the networking group to talk about Soroptimism and what it meant to the likes of you and me, and how it could change the lives of women and girls in our District. I listened to every word and was excited to know more, as I was unfamiliar with Soroptimism, I wanted to visit Moira to offer some publicity through the pages of the Hub to help them engage with local ladies,

Helping girls and women in the community for years

that may want to join the group. To put it quite plain and simple - Soroptimism is a worldwide organisation for women. It has a global voice through awareness, advocacy and action, and its objectives are to strive for, 1. The advancement of the status of women, 2. High ethical standards, 3. Human rights for all, 4. Equality, development and peace; through international goodwill,

understanding and friendship. The group in Keighley have been long established, helping and giving back to the local Keighley community as well as nationally and internationally. Recently, the ladies have been working on a project which they have named S.A.M.E. The abbreviation stands for Soroptimists and Mothers of Eastwood. They have been working closely with the mothers, by helping them engage with the local community. The Soroptimists also have 2 child contact centres in Bingley and Keighley, which are meeting points for split couples with children to see their mum / dad in a safe environment. All of this is voluntary work, by the ladies of both Bingley and Keighley groups. Now for the serious bit - at the group, which meet every other Tuesday at 7.30pm, at the Rugby Club, Skipton Road in Keighley. You will enjoy meeting other like minded ladies, and hear some great talks by their regular speakers. Perfect, if you are looking to widen your network of friends, have fun and generally want to give up your free time for worthy causes.

If you are interested in joining the group, or coming to one of the meetings, please get in touch with the Secretary, Christine Anderton on 01535 633596. You can also visit the website to find out more about Soroptomist International at www.sigbi.org.

Bring a little bit of magic home Hocus Pocus, we all need a bit of magic in our lives. Not least this little chap who has been living as a stray for several months, and probably even a couple of years. Hocus came to Yorkshire Cat Rescue after having to fend for himself. He is completely tame so has belonged to someone at some point in his life – if he had been born outside and never handled, he would not allow people to approach or touch him. He first came to the attention of a kind lady who noticed him stealing food put out for the birds, and loitering with intent whenever she approached the bird table. Taking an interest in him, she asked around but although many of the neighbours knew him, no one knew to whom he belonged. The next thing to do was to find out if he was microchipped, and a quick trip to the vets proved that was not the case. It only took a couple of moments for the vet to scan him for a chip – how wonderful it would have been if there had been a microchip and he could have gone home. The vet also confirmed her suspicions that he was un-neutered. After establishing that he wasn’t chipped, his finder began to make telephone calls. She placed an ad in her local paper, she rang around vets surgeries to see if anyone had reported him missing, and she put him on as many rescue centre lost and found lists as

My Community HUB

she could find. At the same time as putting him our our lost and found list, she asked Yorkshire Cat Rescue to add him to the waiting list so that he could be given a place in the event that his owners could not be traced. Finally, she put a paper collar around his neck with her telephone number and the words “please phone me if this is your cat” - some cats can be very cheeky and visit all the homes in the neighbourhood in search of a meal, and because they return home regularly, they are not “missing” and their owners may not even know about their visiting habits! As was to be expected, all enquiries drew a blank, and Hocus eventually got to the top of our waiting list and came in to our centre. Because Hocus was un-neutered, both we and his finder were pretty sure that we would not be able to trace any owner. A very large number of un-neutered male cats are reported missing each year, and a large number are reported as found or stray – it’s a rare event to be able to match them though. Hocus was in a bit of a fix when he came to us. A bent ear caused by fighting, bad and broken teeth probably caused by scavenging and no dental treatment during his life, and he carried that unmistakable odour of tom cat. A trip to the vets soon sorted out his teeth and his smell, but his bent ear will not straighten. Hocus thinks nearly all his dreams have come true. He has a warm bed, lots of food, plenty of cuddles and he doesn’t smell any more. His last bit of magic would be a new home where he gains his rightful place as a much loved pet and companion, wanting for nothing. You can find more details about the cats looking for new homes, and about the actions you should take if you find or lose a cat, by looking at our website www.yorkshirecatrescue.org or call call Yorkshire Cat Rescue on 01535 647184

Potted Joy! Some of the best fun you can have in gardening is planting up containers, hanging baskets and mangers and watching them burst into bloom. They add instant colour to your garden, with little preparation and they are low maintenance. We have a vast choice of plants for pots and baskets...and of course we have some that are potted already for you to take away and enjoy! Top tip...don’t forget to add some herbs to your hanging baskets and pots!

Growing little gardeners There has been a lot of press recently about the importance of getting children interested in gardening. It’s great to get children outdoors, it’s exercise, it teaches children about the affects of the different seasons, teaches them how to care for something and it has a positive impact on their diet when you start growing your own vegetables. We have been delighted to welcome a number of schools to Woodbank recently. Especially our own local school, Harden Primary on their gardening week. We are here for those rainy days, with five acres of indoor shopping that keep children interested...planting seeds of knowledge and getting those green little fingers growing. Harden Children’s Gala 2013 The original Harden Gala was organised by the Harden Women’s Institute in 1970. The success of this led to the formation of Harden Children’s Gala Society following a public meeting in December 1973. Its aim was to provide an annual gala at as low a cost as possible for the children of Harden and Ryecroft and the neighbouring districts. The Society’s first gala was held in June 1974. Then, as now Gala Queen and her two attendants were chosen at a disco from children resident in Harden and Ryecroft. They were selected by means of a lucky draw, giving every child an equal chance to be Queen or attendant. This system continues to this day and the delighted reaction of those chosen never diminishes. Some of the girls whose names are drawn out are actually daughters of earlier Queens or attendants making the event even more of a family tradition. The Gala parade assembles at the top of Long Lane and after the floats and walking tableaux are judged, it makes its way through the village. The parade is led by a marching New Orleans style jazz band followed by the decorated bikes and prams, floats, children in fancy dress as well as the Gala Queen and her attendants on vintage transport. The parade finally arrives at the park where the Gala is

There are many attractions on the field, including games, a miniature steam train, a roundabout and bouncy castles and slide, tombola and raffle, as well as two free magic shows. The original games were constructed by John Thompson, the father of one of our present committee members, but over the years they have begun to deteriorate. Every year working parties set to in the Spring renovating the games. Last year also saw a new golf game and a farmer’s field game based on the original Jo-Jo (sweets on a string) game. This year we will have a replacement pirates treasure chest and a new drainpipe game kindly constructed by members of the committee. Many local organisations have their own stalls – the W.I., School PTFA, Preschool, etc. Children can also participate in the races that are held during the middle of the afternoon. All they need to do to enter is turn up at the start line. Races start at 3.10pm approx. Medals are given out to the first three in each event, but everyone who takes part gets a sweet! Many of you will be surprised to learn that our activities are not just confined to one event a year. In addition to the Gala itself, the committee also organise a children’s Christmas disco and the Gala Queen disco at which the queen and her attendants are chosen in a draw. Both these events are advertised through Harden Primary School and in local shops and tickets are normally available through school or at Harden Post Office. Any children between the ages of 4 and 13 are welcome to attend these discos. Over the years attendances at the Christmas Disco have dwindled and last year we seriously considered cancelling the event. However a number of parents told us how much their children enjoyed this. If your child did not attend last year perhaps you could let us know why and we can look at ways to improve this for the future. We also provide the Christmas tree by the war memorial. Over the last few years the actual tree has been donated by a local resident so if you have conifer you no longer want please let us know – free cutting service provided. This year it will be put up by men from the committee on Sunday 8th December to co-ordinate with the switching on of the Christmas lights provided by the Parish Council & the carol

singing around the tree on the Sunday evening. At a risk of repeating what you have heard before this event is only a success because of the hard work of the committee and the assistance of extra volunteers on the day. If you would like to find out more, or even get involved with the Gala Committee, we will be holding our AGM on 11 November 2013 in the Memorial Hall at 8pm and always welcome new members. However, if you do not want to join a committee, could you not help in other ways? It could be by helping out on Gala day and giving an hour of your time to help staff a stall (this takes over 150 man hours in total) or you might want to consider baking a cake for the tea tent or donating a prize for the tombola. Help, in any variety, would be gratefully received.

If you would like to know more or get involved, please phone Solna Burnham on 01535 273120 or Jackie Smith on 01535 958742. Alternatively email: hardengala@hotmail.co.uk

Skin Cancer

Most of us enjoy the sun, especially going on holiday abroad to escape the rubbish UK weather. There is also a growing trend for a tanned body, and many younger people look for artificial ways of getting the sun-drenched look. Unfortunately uv-light from the sun or from sun-beds causes unseen damage to our skin. If you allow yourself to get burnt, you will be at risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Even if you do avoid sunburn, the cumulative effects of repeated exposure to sun or sun-beds over the years can also lead to skin cancer. Skin cancer in the UK is rapidly becoming more and more common. This is due to many factors, including the ozone hole, global warming, affordability of foreign holidays, fashion trends and because we’re all living longer. One local specialist recently predicted that in the future we will all be likely to have at least one type of skin cancer in our lives. What can I do to prevent skin cancer? • Use suncream whenever you go out in the sun, at least factor 30, ideally factor 50. • Wear a hat and long sleeves wherever possible. • Avoid the mid-day sun. • Sit in the shade. • Do not use sun-beds, and if you must look tanned, go for the spray options! Using a sun-bed before the age of 35 increases your risk of skin cancer by 75%. • The fairer you skin, the more careful you need to be. Types of skin cancer In general terms, there are 2 groups Melanomas. This is the group we are often more familiar with, because they are more dangerous. They can start in exisiting moles, but can also appear in normal skin and be mistaken for a new mole. Non-melanotic skin cancers (NMSCs). Although less dangerous, they are still important to spot. They can look pink/red, crusty, scabby or ulcerated.

Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery in the Canalside Healthcare Centre in Bingley, will be sharing with The Hub readers exclusive advice on topical health issues and giving his tips for a healthy life.

How do I know if I’ve got skin cancer? Research shows that diagnosis of skin cancer is often delayed because people fail to check their skin regularly, they don’t know what to check for and they are reluctant to seek medical advice. Check yourself and look for changes in your moles and for new moles. If you have lots of them, a good trick is to take a digital photo so you have a record of your moles to compare to in the future (especially good for the back). Use the ABCDE method if you are concered: A. Asymmetry. Split the mole in 2, both sides should look the same. B. Border. The border should be smooth and regular and well-defined. C. Colour. Moles should have a consistent colour, with no more than 2 different shades. D. Diameter. It is unusual for melanomas to be less than 6mm from one side to the other. E. Expert. If in doubt, check it out! If you’ve noticed any change in size, shape or diameter, see your GP for further advice. As skin cancers vary, you should tell your doctor about any changes to your skin, even if they are not similar to those mentioned here. If you would like to give feedback or comments to Simon regarding this feature, or would like to suggest ideas for future features, please contact him through My Community Hub by emailing:kim@ overtmarketing.co.uk

What to look for down on the reserve By Steve Warrillow Denso Marston Nature warden The sun is out, snow is gone and things have got somewhat warmer, now is the time to go out and look for insects. The first butterflies are out and other insects like bees and hoverflies are busy doing their thing. This month we will be looking for the first dragonflies or damselflies to be more correct. This month’s subject is the Large Red Damselfly Pryhosomma nymphula this is normally the first damselfly to be encountered in the spring. It is a red with extensive black markings down its body and so will won’t be confused with anything else it is about 3 inches in length. The males of this species will be seen gathering in groups looking for females. The males are smaller than the females and weigh less (37mg and 40mg respectively – it’s amazing that someone has taken the time to weigh them!) When the wings perched are held together down its abdomen. It is a common insect it is found throughout the Uk reaching as far as the Orkneys. When looking for this insect don’t just look around ponds and ditches check out hedgerows and patches of nettles as they will be seen foraging for other insects to eat. The flight period of the Large Red is mid May to July, it can however come out at the end of April – weather permitting. As a larva it will live in the pond for up to two years if food is scarce it will not emerge for another year. Whilst looking for these insects you will come across other insects like ladybirds, grass bugs and one thing to remember they do not bite or sting! They were called the Devils darning needles

Large Red Damselfly and horse stingers in ages past. If you are lucking enough to have one of these fascinating insects crawl onto your finger take a close up look at them, stare it in the eye. Now that spring is finally here go out come down the reserve and see what you can find. One thing for certain everybody will be looking for that very elusive creature – the sun! Next month we will pond dipping. If you want more information about the reserve please contact me on 07919525913 or email me on my new email: divingbeetlewarrillow@gmail.com

Update on the Herb Garden at St Ives Estate Finally as the temperature has risen the Friends of St Ives have discovered that their Historical Herb Garden has fared very badly due to the extraordinarily bad spring weather. We have sadly lost many of our plants. The Garden has been developed over the last 2 years, laid out as a loose interpretation of a Knott garden with plant species reflecting the formal gardens passing through the centuries at St Ives. The fruit trees, herbs and herbaceous plants span time from the 13th century to the early 20th century. We are applying for awards to hopefully be able to buy more herbs as these seem to have suffered the most. However, we’re also appealing to all the gardeners out there who may be kind enough to donate some of their garden plants to us. This is a short list of some appropriate plants, remembering that the garden represents a window into History so all plants need to be traditional ones. We need many kinds of herbs; Clary Sage and Painted Sage, Welsh Onions, Roman Chamomile, Echinacea, Peonies, Rue, Calendula, Sweet Cicely, Meadowsweet, Yarrow and Borage and more. We also want traditional cottage garden flowers such as Delphiniums, Hollyhocks, Golden Rod, Campanula, Cornflowers, Honesty, Yellow Loosestrife, Primroses, Lambs Ears, Yellow Iris, Aquilegia, and more. Please ring Pam Laking 07958 780391 if you think you may have a plant or two you could donate to the Garden. We would be very grateful. We are hoping soon to have new gates for the Garden entrance constructed by specialist carpenters to replace the existing ones which are in very poor repair. The new 28

One Punch Can Kill As part of West Yorkshire Police’s ongoing work to reduce violent crime the Force is raising awareness of how a night out can lead to a fight and the loss of a life. The ‘One Punch Can Kill’ campaign reminds people that in a split second a person can become a killer or be killed. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the pubs and clubs in the towns and cities in West Yorkshire, but would encourage people to consider how much alcohol they consume. What can start out as a fun night drinking with friends can easily turn into a nightmare. Just one punch can ruin the lives of both the victim and the person who throws the punch. West Yorkshire Police are committed to tackling violent crime and will continue our

efforts to reduce the numbers of victims, but we need people to play their part by thinking about their actions before they get involved in a fight on a night out. My Community HUB

Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice - taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn.
