Dear Readers Welcome to our July issue! Summer is coming (and we’ve already seen a sneak peak of sunshine). As I write this letter to my wonderful readers, I have just returned from the church to rehearse for mine and Simon’s Wedding this coming Saturday 29th June. The nerves are setting in now, but I am sure they will be replaced with adrenaline nearer to the day. Apart from the Wedding, we have been busy talking to Sue Ryder charity, and especially the Manorlands Hospice Fundraising Team. As you can see on the front cover we are very glad to be working with them to help promote their spectacular mini festival “WoodFest”, which is based in Cullingworth from the 19th to the 21st July. The weekend comprises of camping, live music and entertainment and is perfect for that well earned weekend away (but still being on your doorstep). You can read all about the good work the fundraising team at Manorlands do, on page 6. Simon and I will be away for a couple of weeks celebrating our marriage together, and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for continuing to support us and the magazine on our journey. In the meantime, if you need to contact the office, please contact alex@overtmarketing.co.uk. See you next month Kimberley

Ensure your child learns to swim the right way The Swim Star way!

Prince William has backed calls for school swimming to be accessible to all primary school children. The Duke of Cambridge is in support of the Amateur Swimming Association’s (ASA) vision that every child has the right to learn to swim. The English Schools Swimming Association, which the Duke of Cambridge is patron of, says half of seven-to 11-year-olds in England, some 1.1 million children, cannot swim the length of a standard pool. Prince William outlined the importance of children being confident in water and said the benefits of swimming go beyond exercise..... Swim Stars are a very friendly swimming school, built on giving personal attention and developing excellent relationships with both swimmers and parents alike. A privately owned venture that has successfully been teaching swimming to children and adults for nearly 13 years. Since starting as a small school of five swimmers under our previous name of C.A.S.S. back in 2000, our school has grown from strength to strength with approximately 800 children having lessons with us every week.

Our team of 15, ASA qualified teachers offer swimming tuition to any ability, from babies’ right through to adults. We have a maximum of six children in our beginners’ classes, who are joined in the water by their teacher. For our intermediates, we have no more than eight in a lesson. Ducklings (adult and child in the water), and adult lessons are also taught in groups of no more than six. We hold lessons at Hazlebeck School, Bingley Grammar School and also at our own pool, Cragg Vale in Hebden Bridge. We have now opened a new office, based in Crossflatts, open between the hours of 9am - 3.30pm, where staff are on hand to deal with any queries relating to lessons at both Bingley pools. Parent Testimonials....... ‘Scarlett loves coming to Swim Stars. She is already making fantastic progress…The small group scenario is perfect and I’m sure that Scarlett will be a strong swimmer in no time’ DF (Mum of Scarlett) ‘Wilf really looks forward to his lessons. It’s great to have the teacher in the water with them. The small class size is good too’ AT (Mum of Wilf)

The Employees Lawyer We’re on your side The Employees Lawyer only acts on behalf of employees and workers. We advise solely in claimant employment law rights in areas such as; Discrimination Discrimination, Harassment & Bullying - Discrimination at work can be manifest in many forms. Discrimination takes place when a person or group is treated differently to those around them, in either a favourable or unfavourable way. Usually when there is discrimination in the workplace it is done in a negative way, and it means that someone is being treated less favourably or differently from their colleagues and they are at a disadvantage because of this discrimination. Workplace discrimination is unlawful if the reason for the treatment is;

• Age • Disability • Race • Religious or Philosophical Belief • Sexual Orientation • Sex (gender)

Discrimination claims are very complex subjects and legal advice should always be taken before bringing any type of discrimination claim. Unfair dismissals - Dismissal from employment can be the result of many different scenarios. Sometimes dismissals are acrimonious following some form of contentious disciplinary procedures. If you think you have been unfairly dismissed contact The Employees Lawyer who will advise you if you have an unfair dismissal claim. Compromise agreements Constructive Dismissal Has your employer takes some action or step that fundamentally breach the terms of your contract of employment, steps which is so serious that it makes it impossible for you to continue working with them. We will advise you if you have a claim for constructive dismissal. Grievance & Disciplinary We offers advice and assistance throughout the workplace disciplinary procedures, including preparation for the hearing and analysis of your case and how to respond, as well as bringing related claims for unfair dismissal or discrimination where necessary, or negotiating any termination of employment. during maternity leave, and refusal to agree flexible working requests on return to work, as well as health and safety issues during pregnancy. Redundancy We have many years of experience advising employees facing individual and collective redundancies. We are familiar with challenging redundancy selection as well as tactics to maximise redundancy compensation payments. We can support you through each step of the process to achieve the best possible outcome for you. Whistle Blowing This is the common name given to claims under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 (PIDA). It protects employees & workers who

believe that they have been subjected to a detriment at work because they have disclosed information about their employer.

If you have been dismissed or at suffering a detriment at work because you have blown the whistle, we can help.

The Employees Lawyer – What it costs The Employees Lawyers know that 100’s of employees and workers suffer unlawful treatment by their employer because they cannot afford to get good employment law advice. The law in the employment tribunal remains that each party pay their own costs which in many cases makes access to employment law justice unachievable. The Employees Lawyer strives to address this imbalance. We offer 5 main funding options depending on the type employment law advice we give; • Fixed Fees • Private Funding - An agreed fixed hourly rate currently £150 + VAT • Damages Based Agreement • Legal Expenses Insurance • Conditional Fee Agreement Unless the advice will be funded on a private fee basis (option 2) or by Legal Expense Insurance (option 4) , after a free 30 minute telephone consultation, we will always charge between £250 & £500 for our expert assessment of legal merit of your case depending upon the complexity.

We’re on your side Specialists in: • Compromise Agreements • Constructive Dismissal • Grievance & Disciplinary Procedures • Harassment & Bullying • Maternity & Paternity • Redundancy • Unfair Dismissal • Whistleblowing (Protected Disclosure) • Discrimination Miss Gaynor Beckett Legal Director - Employment & Business Division Gumption Business Centre, Glydegate, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD5 0BQ

1950s Chapel Lane from Main Street

Bingley History - A Photographic Timeline In previous editions we have presented a collage of photographs of Main Street. These are intended to capture the changes which have taken place to some notable landmarks (past and present) in Bingley over the last 120 or so years. This month traces some of the events in the development of Chapel Lane which runs off Main Street. These include the building of a Chapel which gave the Lane its name, opening of shops by the early Co-operative movement in Bingley and trading by Rushtons Outfitters from the old Chapel building. Images included in this article commence in the late 1800’s. Early Chapel Victorian author William Cudworth (1876) in Round About Bradford (A Series of Sketches) records “A meeting house was erected which is still standing, occupied as shops and dwelling houses in Chapel Lane. Of the precise year in which the old chapel was erected there is no record”. Building of Chapel and the First Minister- 1694 In fact there does appear to be a record. Dodd (1958) Bingley suggests that in 1694/95 Robert Walker “built a chapel and lofted the same at his own charge, say for about £15” Dodd also suggests that an existing building may have been converted. The site of the Chapel was on

the corner of Main Street and Chapel Lane (where the Post Office now stands). In 1695 noted clergyman Oliver Heywood presided at the foundation of the Chapel (initially Presbyterian) with Accepted Lister as the first Minister. Speight (1895) Chronicles of Old Bingley states “here he preached in 1694 and finally settled in 1695, the house and chapel being under the same roof” Move of the Chapel - 1818 According to Horsfall-Turner (1897) in Ancient Bingley, the building in Chapel Lane, which by 1810 had been occupied for over 200 years, was “incommodious and inadequate for the increased congregation”. Consequently the old Chapel became redundant and a new one was built at another site in Bingley and opened in April 1818. The Cooperative Movement in Bingley 1850 A formative Cooperative Movement started in Bingley in the 1850’s. Initially Chapel Lane existed as a block of cottages, some of which were converted into shops where the Cooperative Society amongst others, carried on its business in its early years. The first Cooperative shop opened on Chapel Lane in 1854. Over time between 1868 and 1874 further cottages were purchased which progressively became the Central Grocery, Drapery and Pork Department and Butchers. Despite opening a new Central Stores in Main Street in 1888, Chapel Lane continued to be a much used Cooperative site, including Meeting Rooms. Rushtons Outfitters Rushtons were a popular Milliners, Hosiers ,Shirt Makers, Dressmakers, Costumiers and Drapers who occupied the old chapel building for many years. They also sold carpets, rugs, linoleum and blinds, whilst also catering for a fairly well heeled clientele. Baldwin (2005) in Bingley Revisited records the observations of Henrietta Whiting a Continued on page 16

young seamstress who worked at Rushtons in the early 1900’s. Henrietta described carriages carrying ladies and their maidservants drawing up to either order or collect clothes and other goods. Clearance Between 1934 and 1937 there were a number of clearance schemes in central Bingley. Many decaying buildings in Chapel Lane were demolished and the road was widened at the Main Street end and a new Coop shop was built there. In 2013 the main Coop presence in Bingley is in 5Rise Shopping Centre and Chapel Lane still exists, providing a range of smaller shop units and services. Our Photographs These are intended to show

significant views of Chapel Lane from 1870. Whilst this article and the photographs may give a flavour of the history and changes they do not claim to be an exhaustive record. Thanks Our thanks go to Bradford Libraries Local History and Sue Caton, Bingley Local History Society -Stanley Varo, the late Graham Carey, Mick Walmsley - Woodbank Nurseries, Harden, for permission to use some of their images. Thanks also to Muriel Woods of Crossflatts for kindly providing me with Three Hundred Years of History 1695-1995, Bingley Reformed Church (Formerly Congregational) By Alison Kuhne (1995). Fifty Years of Cooperation In Bingley by Hartley

(1900) has also been used as a major point of reference. Dates Dates attributed to the photographs are in a limited number of cases speculative and are based on clues within the photographs e.g shops, clothing of pedestrians etc. If you have knowledge of any of these and can provide more accurate dating, we would be really pleased to hear from you. Alan Cattell Bingley - June 2013

Living History - an update by our Local History Writer Over the last three years I have been meeting and interviewing local residents to capture local history events before memories of these are lost. To date two articles that I have written namely Bingleys Lost Cinemas and Bingley Swimming Pool and Princess Hall have been as a result of these interviews. Reader Contact In November 2012 reader Peter Rushforth contacted me to tell me that he had enjoyed the Bingley Swimming Pool article but that I had not mentioned his friend Barry Watson. In 1964 Barry had set a World Record of 9 hours and 35 minutes for swimming the English Channel. This record stood for 18 years! As a result of Peters email to me I have now spent an enjoyable couple of meetings with Barry and am working with him on telling his story and the things that motivated him to undertake such a daunting swim. We will be publishing the finished article over the coming months. In April 2013, Richard Stoyles, Proprietor of the Five Rise Locks Hotel and Restaurant contacted me re an American visitor who was going to be staying at the hotel in May 2013. The visitor, Michael Wild was coming to Bingley to trace relatives and follow up research about his family who moved from Bingley to the United States in 1908. Michael is a relative

Michael Wild and Alan Photograph courtesy of Jarrod Forsdyke of William Wild one of the four stonemasons who worked on building the Five Rise Locks in 1774. Again I spent an enjoyable couple of meetings with Michael and his family in May and have agreed that we will work together on writing an article for publication in the near future. He has other connections, notably with the Elstub and Wilde families in the local area and is interested in following these up through the pages of Bingley Hub and interested readers. Have you a memory or piece of living history that you would like to discover more about, share, or capture? If so contact me through the Editor of Bingley Hub Alan Cattell Bingley - June 2013

A look back at history on the St Ives Estate In our occasional feature, Pam Laking talks to The Hub about Living History at St Ives Estate, Harden. She writes: St Ives has such a long and rich history and we often wish we knew more about the people who have lived, worked and walked the paths that we now do. So we are always happy when people contact us with memories or information regarding St Ives’s history. Since opening the Visitor’s Centre several families have come in to share information with us. Recently, Geoff and Wendy Haydon, here on a visit from Australia, made visiting St Ives something of a pilgrimage. James’ mother Beatrice spent her early years on the Estate with her family, and although she had moved to live in Australia, she had never forgotten St Ives and apparently was always talking with great affection about the Estate. Wendy Haydon was very close to Beatrice and became quite emotional to finally find herself at the place she had heard so much about over the years. Beatrice’s father, James Cundall, was living at St Ives

Ferrands Hounds when the 1911 census took place. She was his sixth living child born in 1905. Sadly, as was often the way in the past, two of their other children had died. James was described both in the census and by Geoff’s mother as the Gamekeeper. She also described his duties as looking after the animals and also dealing with the many poachers who came onto the Estate, particularly

after the herds of deer who lived there. Apparently James was also responsible for a large pack of hunting beagles and in the picture they’ve sent us you can see a hunting party ready to go out. Sadly we have no names for any of those present but we assume that James Cundall and possibly members of the Ferrand family are amongst them. The Ferrand Kennels, although almost a ruin now, still exists on the Estate and is in fact now for sale to be converted into a bungalow following the footprint of the original building. The Cundall family photo dates from 1905/1906 and Beatrice is the baby in her mother Elizabeth’s arms. It’s assumed that the picture is taken on the Estate, possibly by the Heather Park. The family lived very happily at St Ives until 1920, when sadly James Cundall died. Beatrice went on to live a very long and happy life recently dying in 2010 at the wonderful age of 105.

The national campaign, organised by the National Skills Academy for Retail, champions the local retailers who make the UK’s villages, towns and cities so special. With over 160,000 independent retailers making up 92% of all retail businesses in the UK, their importance to local economies as well as their contribution to a location’s identity and community is unrivaled. Jane Rexworthy, Head of the National Skills Academy for Retail said: “We are delighted to

lead this campaign to celebrate diversity in retail. Independents’ Day aims to highlight the huge range of skills successful independent retailers need to make our towns and cities such interesting and varied places to visit and shop. “The National Skills Academy for Retail offers a wide range of support directly to retailers to help them get ahead. It’s essential independent retailers understand that to compete today they have to have the best people as well as products, and that training and development can really make a difference.” To stay up to date with all the activities, you can follow the campaign on Twitter @Retail_ IndieDay, facebook.com/independentsday or on the news section of www.retailindieday.com

Traditional, unique and authentic Bangladeshi cuisine Wilsden Balti has gained an impressive reputation over the years and not only from locals. Many of their regular customers travel for miles for their favourite dish, carefully crafted from family recipes over many years. Truly unique recipes has been the secret to their popularity, and the quality of their dishes is something they take great pride in. So much so, that they have resisted the urge to add a delivery service. They believe that cooking each meal individually from fresh produce is what makes them so special, to add a delivery service would only compromise the quality of their food. The first Bangladeshi takeaway in the area, Wilsden Balti first opened their doors in 1998 nearly 16 years ago and is still owned / run by the same family. 24

Royal British Legion Pedal to Paris bike ride David Peel, a member of the Bingley branch, will soon be setting off from London and along with some 300 others will be cycling 463 km to Paris. On arrival they will be escorted along the Champs-Elysees by Police motorcyclists to the Arc de Triomphe where a wreath will be laid on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. David is no stranger to outdoor events as he has completed many long treks as well as undertaking a cycle ride through the Himalayas, starting in Simla in North West India and riding 230 miles in varying temperatures from freezing mornings to sweltering afternoons, reaching 3000 feet

on some off road tracks until finally reaching Haridwar on the Ganges – all for Mencap. This time he is doing it to raise money for those injured whilst serving their country, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan, where many are of a similar age to his son who is currently with the Yorkshire Regiment. Although he has been supported by his employers and two of their customers, David would be grateful for any additional sponsors. So, come along to Bingley Show, and talk to David at the Royal British Legion stall. You can also take part in the competition connected with his ride.

David would love to hear from any possible sponsors by e-mail at daveh.peel@ btinternet.com or on 07909 687 673

Update from Bingley’s Youth Cafe By Paula Stone, BYC The young people of Bingley decided to break stereotypes and do something about the town’s ailing bandstand in Myrtle Park back in May this year, by picking up their paintbrushes and giving it a new lease of life. The bandstand is often the centre for town events, and hosts concerts throughout the summer. But it has seen better days, and it was one of the first things members of Bingley Youth Cafe thought of when they wanted to make a change to their community. Based at the Bingley Swimming Pool building, the youth cafe is used by about 300 teenagers, and provides a place where they can socialise and take part in various events. Since it was set up in 2011, the group have looked to improve their town, and most recently set their sights on the bandstand. 26

An initial bid for cash was unsuccessful, so the Youth Cafe approached their local councillors, who can award small grants for projects in their area. They were given £1,500 to fund this project. The Youth Cafe is funded by the National Lottery, and managed by Shipley and Bingley voluntary services. Paula Stone, youth development worker at the cafe, said: “We had made a DVD about the bandstand and why improving it would make a difference to the community. We didn’t get funding the first time, but councillors were impressed with the young people’s ideas and we eventually got the grant.

“There are a lot of stereotypes of young people, and this about giving something positive back, young people don’t just trash stuff.” Teens aged between 14 and 17 took part, painting the band stand in its traditional colours. Councillor David Heseltine, who represents Bingley, said: “The young people came to us and said they wanted to do something to enhance the bandstand. “The councillors liked the idea so gave them a small amount of money that councillors get to grant for projects within their area. “It is nice when young people do something such as look at the bandstand and think it needs a bit of TLC. It gives them that feeling of ownership. It is great when young people want to be actively involved in the community. It shows they are valuable members of the community.”

One Amazing Night Children’s concert at Victoria Hall

Get set for fun at Keighley Festival Keighley Festival - 5th to 13th July This year’s Keighley Festival of Art, Sport, Music and Dance is on course to be one of the best yet, according to organiser and chairperson, Malcolm Hanson. The jamboree, which runs from Friday 5th to Saturday 13th of July covers just about every kind of activity, with hundreds of performers lining up to sing, dance, play football and cricket, and, of course – have a doodle with a paintbrush! “We try to cover every type of activity,” said Malcolm, “particularly for children. Schools are busy building exhibits for our Kabinet of Keighley Kuriosities exhibition. So far we have been promised the biggest bowl of fruit in the world, the entire universe, and the giant Rumbold plus his wife and baby!”

To counteract the cuts, the festival committee came up with the idea of “events” within “events”. “Rather than most days having a dozen things taking place at different venues around the town, we are bringing them all together at one place, thereby saving on venue hire. For instance, we have “Festival Goes to East Riddlesden Hall” on Tuesday, 9th of July, where the exhibition, live music, demonstrations, mass picnic, walks and talks will all take place together. There is also a Medieval Day on Sunday 7th July, at Cliffe Castle, with a whole raft of events happening,” In addition to the 1000 performers, cafes and community centres will be organising cream tea sessions, children will be organising discos, and festival mascots, “Happycat Jones” and “Dolly Dipstick” will be joined by Keighley’s very own “ghostbusters”, the Pennine Paranormal Society, touring events. Programmes are available from libraries and public buildings, as well as in many shops and cafes.

Keep your feline friend safe in your garden this Summer It’s that time of year when our gardens and homes are full to bursting with beautiful flowers. And the cat lovers amongst us like nothing better than to snap our kitties amongst the glorious floral abundance. Many cat lovers don’t realise, however, that some plants are extremely toxic to cats and can result in severe illness and often death if they are ingested. Cats rarely eat plants, however, they do have a need to chew grass – usually if they have a tummy ache – and if grass isn’t available they may chew other plants. This is more common for house cats – those cats which don’t have access to the outdoors. Sick cats and kittens may also eat inappropriate plants, driven by a desperate need to chew or simply, in the case of kittens, by inexperience. Bored cats may also chew plants inappropriately. Lilies are amongst the most toxic plants. It is rare that a cat would chew a Lilly, but cut blooms in a vase in the house can have a devastating effect if the cat brushes against the flower and the pollen attaches itself to the cat’s fur. The cat will, of course, groom itself at some point and swallow the pollen and thus the damage is caused. From an owners point of view, it is often difficult to know if the cat has swallowed pollen as of course the plant looks to be undamaged. The best thing to do, if you want to have Lilies in your home or in your garden, is to pinch out the stamen – the bit with the pollen – and throw it away in a wheelie bin so that it is completely out of reach to passing cats. Some plants are not poisonous to cats but may have sharp points which can cause internal injury if swallowed. Cat owners would be advised to regularly check their cats’ fur for needles, sap and any other plant material so that it can be removed before the cat grooms and eats it. The symptoms of poisoning vary, but if your cat collapses, suddenly starts being sick or has diarrhoea or has blistering or swelling around its mouth you should seek immediate veterinary assistance. If you think your cat has eaten something poisonous even if there are no symptoms, don’t delay in getting him or her to a vet – in some 32

cases once the symptoms begin to show it is too late to take any action. It is rare for cats to be poisoned by plants but sensible precautions will reduce the risk even further. Buy some cat-grass if your cat has no outside access, and rotate toys so boredom doesn’t set in. Familiarise yourself with which plants are poisonous (you can find details online) and if you are given a bouquet containing beautiful Lillies, put them in a room where your cat doesn’t go. Cats and flowers – two more beautiful things would be hard to find. Enjoy them both but keep your furry purry friend safe from those hidden dangers. the events of the 2006 film X-MEN: THE LAST STAND and was inspired by the storyline from a popular 1982 comic book by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. In order to create his character’s impressive physique, Jackman followed an intensive training program that involved stamina, strength and sheer resolve. Responsible for training the Oscar nominated actor was Michael Ryan, a highly respected expert in all aspects of fitness training. Ryan also has a degree in industrial design; he specialized in the design of exercise equipment. He has done extensive TV reporting and presenting in Australia on the subject of fitness. Ryan has worked as Hugh Jackman’s personal trainer on many of his films including X2: X-MEN UNITED, X-MEN THE LAST STAND, VAN HELSING, AUSTRALIA and X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. Ryan sat down in Sydney to discuss the specifics of the actor’s training program for THE WOLVERINE. Q: How long have you been working with Hugh? A: “I started working with Hugh back in the late 80s believe it or not. Hugh hadn’t started acting at that time. He was a struggling university student studying communications. He came to the gym where I was teaching aerobics and working as a gym floor instructor. I had quite a popular following, but suddenly this new guy on the block (Hugh) arrived and was getting all the attention (laughs). So rather than getting annoyed about that I became his friend. We instantly became great mates. Hugh was very thin and asked me to train him so I showed him how to get good results in a time efficient manner. Over the years that followed, we worked out together and hung out together a lot. And of course he started acting and became a great actor. We have remained good friends over the years. He was the best man at my wedding, so we’re very close as you can imagine.” Q: Hugh is obviously very fit already. How do you train with him to prepare for an intensely physical role like THE WOLVERINE that involves serious action? A: “Even if the actor is in good shape, at the end of the day a good trainer is important to push him to his limits. You have to get inside the actor’s head and encourage him to rise above the level he thinks he can achieve and then go beyond that. It is all about trust. Hugh and I are actually competitive with each other, which is probably why I’ve had such good success training him. If a person comes to

train with me and his or her mindset isn’t right, the training program does not work. You don’t get a good result. Hugh does not get distracted. During our warm-up, we do talk on a deep level about many things in our lives. That conversation puts us in a good mindset. It helps us to clear our heads and get focused on training. I would describe our sessions as very well rounded. Working out is not just about getting in shape, it is also about keeping each other mentally alert and focused.” Q: Hugh looks extraordinary in the film. What did he do? A: “The first thing I should point out is that Hugh never stops training. He always trains, not just when he needs to look a certain way for a specific role. He always begins from a solid base of fitness and strength. He never loses his muscle mass, which means we can build on that foundation very quickly. Also when we are working here in Australia we use a ‘DEXA- scan’, which is a bit like an x-ray. It enables you to see your skeleton. It accurately measures muscle, fat, hydration and bone density and it only takes three minutes to scan the body. I’ve used that with Hugh over the past six years and it’s an absolute benchmark for measurements. So I can track what we’ve achieved and what differences there are right down to each body part. I can tell you if his left leg is slightly bigger than his right leg, or if his right bicep needs a bit of work. This scan allows me to see all of these details but the ultimate measurement is the ratio of body fat to muscle. We are able to track that and refine everything accordingly in our workouts.” Q: In other words you’re scientific about the work? A: “Absolutely, one hundred percent. You have to be scientific so that there’s no guesswork. A lot of people judge how fit they are by how they look in the mirror and while that is relevant, it’s better to have an accurate measure. Also because Hugh and I are very competitive we both have our scans at the same time. We joke about who is going to get the best results and who’s going to be depressed at the end of it (laughs). After Hugh’s scan for THE WOLVERINE, he saw that he had more muscle than he’s ever had in his life and less body fat. His confidence level went through the roof. Hugh looks amazing in the film, he is so vascular it is quite extraordinary. Continued on page 38 My Community HUB

Movies I call him Spaghetti Biceps. I’ve watched him over the years become more and more vascular. The more the body trains over the years, the more it continues to improve. That has definitely happened with Hugh.” Q: How varied were the training sessions? A: “We work with all the muscle groups using regular body building methods but we never train the same muscle groups at the same time. A lot of people will only train the chest or triceps or the back and biceps, but we will do many sessions where we’ll swap everything around. We will do chest and back or biceps and triceps. We work with opposing muscle groups. The training is massively varied. The goal is to shock the body in order to create change.” Q: Can you describe a typical session? A: “We always start with a warm up session. Sometimes we’ll do a long, slow 40 minutes cardio build up, but other times we’ll do a shorter 20 minute warm up and we might use interval training

to get that heart rate right up. Each full session was two hours long. For THE WOLVERINE we predominantly focused on rowing, cycling (on a stationary bike) and elliptical training. Hugh also did some boxing. We used a product called Boxmaster that’s just been invented for training people how to box. Hugh was amazing. What he does with the Boxmaster blows your mind away.” Q: What did Hugh’s work out involve when you were preparing for THE WOLVERINE? A: “Initially we were working on building muscle to get him as big as possible for that ripped Wolverine physique. We used traditional lifting techniques, standard pressing and squatting movements, which are very effective. We also did a lot of heavy lifting. Then, we introduced what we call three-dimensional movements. They engage core activity. Imagine someone rowing: his or her upper body is working three-dimensionally. It’s twisting, it’s turning, it’s engaged in different types of movement. To be honest, I’m a strong believer in traditional training. Don’t tell me one exercise is better than another. It’s about doing a combination of training and styles.” MICHAEL RYAN’S HEALTH AND FITNESS TIPS. Make a commitment to exercise with someone or with a group. That is the first step and it helps because you are making a commitment to you and to a partner so you are more likely to follow through and stick to it. Or work out with a trainer. Set a minimum level of commitment to start with and build on that. Don’t try to be a superstar right away. Start small. Don’t make the mountain too big to climb. Set goals and increase your workout incrementally. For example when you take up swimming, you dive in the pool and 50 meters feels like a huge effort. But then eventually you build up to 100 meters and it’s not so hard and you keep building and gradually improve. Be consistent. That is one of the keys. Then you will start to feel better and look better. Measure your progress. Write down what you want to achieve and then plot your journey. One thing I’ll say: weight is not a measurement, don’t get fixated on the scales. Weight does not measure how much muscle and how much fat you have. The scales will lie to you from that point of view. If you cant get a DEXA-scan just look at your belt size and monitor how clothes feel on you. If you can get hold of composition scales, measure yourself at the same time of the day, first thing after waking up when you are naked before you drink any fluids.
