Hello and Welcome to the Summer issue As I am writing this, it is exactly two weeks since I got back from my honeymoon. And what a fabulous time we had, touring the lovely island of Ibiza. It was great to come back to scorching temperatures, even our children had better tans than us! And then it was time to be thrown in the deep end - final end of year accounts, and a magazine to print!! And to top it all off ..... the dreaded 6 weeks holidays! It’s been a little tough putting this issue together to such tight timescales, but with the help of our fantastic designer Chris, we managed to get the magazine out in good time. This issue focuses on the major event that takes place in Bingley at the end of August, beginning of September Bingley Music Live, and by golly have they got a line up for you this year! Still time to get your tickets, see our feature on pages 6-8. Also featured this month, is my Wedding to my husband Simon :) I personally wanted to thank all the local suppliers that we had used, and write a testimonial about them. And obviously show off my big day to you all ..... The day was wonderful, the staff at Five Rise Locks hotel were amazing, what a fantastic family run business it is. Oh and the food was to die for ...... Other than that, we have our regular slots - Local History with Alan Cattell, Community goings on, Kids Corner, and brand new feature from Jane Richards, beauty tips and home tips !! Until next time ... Kimberley

Now in its seventh year, Bingley Music Live

will be held at Myrtle Park between August 30th - September 1st. This much-loved Yorkshire music festival is shaping up to be an all-time classic with a diverse array of exceptional talent appearing on the two stages over three days. We can now unveil the full line up and day splits for this year’s music extravaganza:

Is there nothing that Tinchy Stryder touches that doesn’t turn to gold? The diminutive Ghanaian-British rapper raised in Bow has had a prolific career releasing three studio albums and a fourth is due later this year. With 7 top 10 singles to his name it’s easy to see why the rapper Wiley, also from Bow, christened him Prince of Grime. Tinchy continues to lead the way for a generation of stars on the urban music scene. Filling the warm up slot for Friday’s headliners we have The Neville Staple Band, who will bring some old school ska favourites to Bingley. Renowned as a driving force behind bands such as The Specials, FunBoy3 and The Special Beat, Neville’s music industry career spans almost 50 years. All fans of the 2 Tone movement will be in skanking heaven.

Dream Chaser

Local Author takes on the Giants In our occasional feature, we talk to Amanda Petyt, a local author, wife and mother of three from Harden; who talks to us about her brand new Novel “Bosomed Deep in Vines”. Amanda tells us why she decided to write a novel and what we can expect from the book. Amanda has lived in Harden since year 2000, with her husband Richard and three opinionated children. She read a Law Degree at Newcastle University and also worked in Banking, but always knew her passion was creative writing. When her children came along, she decided that it was time to stay at home with them, and put all her energy into writing, as well as baking cakes for assorted hungry visitors or slapping her thigh in the local panto. Amanda’s love for writing finally came to fruition when she joined the Harden Players. A local amateur dramatics group, based in the village she lived. This was the ideal opportunity for Amanda to encompass all her passions in one go. She turned her hand to writing a play; Pride and Perfidy, a Jane Austen meets Blackadder style Regency romp, and several panto’s and even acted as some of the main characters on stage. “Bosomed Deep in Vines” is Amanda’s first published Novel. Amanda said “It was always my dream to write a novel. My inspiration for the book has come from attending many wine tasting nights with my girlfriends. I took my S-Level in creative writing, and whilst working around my children and family life, I knew I could achieve my goal. It’s taken me over a year to write and publish the book, but the feedback I have had so far has been fantastic. I’ve even been stopped in the street a couple of times by people, saying how much they enjoyed reading it. It’s the fulfillment of a dream”. “It’s so difficult for a newcomer to land a publishing deal that I decided to set up my own company and do it myself. Publishing houses will not accept unsolicited manuscripts so writers must find an agent to represent them and the agencies receive thousands of submissions” says Amanda. The advent of print on demand has enabled writers like Amanda to be independent. Companies such as Createspace will assist with formatting files for paperbacks or Kindle. “So if there’s a story you’ve always wanted to tell, go ahead and follow your dream”. Bosomed Deep in Vines - a phrase taken from a poem - The Dunciad by Alexander Pope, was the inspiration for the title. It is a romantic comedy; witty, poignant, and a real page turner. Here’s a summary of the story. 10

Sarah is struggling to make a new life for herself. She’s moved to a picturesque Yorkshire village, landed a job managing a wine shop with a motley staff of flirts and misfits and she’s beginning to recover from a disastrous love affair. But last night she met a gorgeous, ruthless stranger and made a powerful enemy. And something happened that she can’t quite remember. But does she really want to? She could lose everything; her home, her job...her friends; it seems that they have their own secrets of betrayal and sexual awakening. Bosomed Deep in Vines is a hilarious romp through Sarah’s year as she fights to save her village green from development and grows from a gawky girl to the woman who’ll save the world, or at least her quaint corner of it. If you would like to purchase Bosomed deep in Vines, you can buy online at Amazon.co.uk. All you have to do is search for “bosomed deep in vines” in the search facility. The cost is £7.99 with free shipping.

Offer ends 31st August 2013.

Cullingworth Meets Hollywood in the Spectacular Scarecrow Festival On the weekend of 7th and 8th September The Cullingworth Scarecrow Festival is now in its’ eleventh year, and takes place on the weekend of 7th and 8th September in Cullingworth Village. It all began when a past committee member visited another village who was holding the same event and thought it would be a great idea for Cullingworth. The theme for this years festival is “Cullywood”. Hollywood meets Cullingworth. The residents can dress their scarecrow in something Hollywood themed or just choose the open category. The scarecrows are then displayed in their gardens around the village. You will be surprised to know that last year there were over 60 Scarecrows on show. The aim of the event is to fundraise for two charities The Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Manorlands. Funds will be raised by programme sales, light refreshments and by selling lots of cake ! which have been donated by the general public. What to expect on the day! Bring the family, buy the programme and let the children do the quiz while walking around the houses. Or if your legs won’t take you around the whole of Cullingworth, why not pop on the Minibus which will transport you around the 12

village. On the programme there is a voucher for a free slice of cake, which can be redeemed at the Village Hall. You will be able to buy refreshments throughout the day; including light lunches, tea and cakes (all homemade) and if you visit Sunningdale Crescent you can even buy ice cream and lollies for the children. Last year the weather was treacherous, but the local surrounding communities came the festival to show their support (with their umbrellas). Fingers crossed this year will be good weather, following on from the good weather we’ve had this year so far. The Festival Committee would like to encourage local residents to take part in the Festival, and if you can lend a hand by baking a cake, or if you would like to make a scarecrow, please pick up a copy of the entry forms which you will find situation in and around the village, and in the newsagents. If you would like to bake a cake, please take it to the village hall on the Saturday morning. The committee are very grateful to residents who make the scarecrows and to people who turn up to support the festival and donate generously to make it a success each year.

Bingley History - A Photographic Timeline In previous editions we have presented a collage of photographs of Main Street. These are intended to capture the changes which have taken place to some notable landmarks (past and present) in Bingley over the last 120 or so years. This final photographic timeline of this series looks at Myrtle Place which was situated opposite the Main Street end of Chapel Lane until the early 1970’s. In its time it served Bingley as an open space for events and a market as well as housing the Poorhouse/Workhouse and Police/ Court buildings and accommodation for a growing population. Myrtle Place Workhouse In 1726 an old house situated on farmland in what was already named Myrtle Place was converted by the local Vestry Committee into the Bingley Workhouse. In 1776 the Vestry set up a standing Committee to act as Guardians of the Poor and by 1777 a Parliamentary Report listed local workhouses (including Bingley), which it suggested had a capacity for up to 40 inmates. Myrtle Place Court of Requests and Bingley Courthouse National legislation again had an effect on Bingley when the Court Baron previously held in the Kings Head Inn, Bingley for the recovery of small debts was extended by Act of Parliament in 1777. This established a Court of Requests for the recovery of debts under 40 shillings. Dodd (1958) Bingley states “The growth of business in Bingley - as indicated by the number of small debts to be collected - is indicated by the flourishing state of the Court of Requests. In half a century it had amassed enough in fees to build a court house of its own (1831); this was in Myrtle Place on part of the Kings Head Yard. Bingley Lock Up - Myrtle Place In 1821 a new lock up had been built which adjoined the Workhouse. Part of the funding had been made by

the County authorities and part by a loan from the Busfeild Charity locally. Move of the Court to Keighley The life of the Court of Requests in Myrtle Place was a short one and in 1839 it was moved to Keighley where in 1847 it became the County Court. Chartist Drilling in Myrtle Place 1848 On 24th May 1848 in support of the Chartist cause, 100 men assembled in Myrtle Place for the purpose of drilling and marching. As a result, two of the leaders who had acted as drill sergeants were arrested and later rescued by a mob from the justice room at the Brown Cow Inn near Ireland Bridge, Bingley. They were later re arrested in an incident known as The Little Siege of Bingley (see Cattell (2011) Bingley and Surrounds - Forgotten Moments from History for further information) Move of the Workhouse to Keighley By 1857 the old Bingley Workhouse had become so dilapidated that the building was condemned and in 1860 the new Union workhouse was ready and the paupers from Bingley were transferred to the new site. A photograph of the Bingley Workhouse and Relieving Office from the period shows the workhouse just prior to demolition and posters displaying Poor Rates. Interestingly, next door to these are the offices of the Amalgamated Society of Woolcombers and Kindred Trades an early Trade Union for the local Woolcombers of the District Building of a New Courthouse in Myrtle Place 1860 Initially it was proposed that the site of the workhouse and the lock up (which was also out of use) should be acquired by the County authorities. After judicious accounting it was agreed that Bingley Township would have a share of a new building. As a result a brand new Court Building and Police Station were built in 1860 at the

expense of the County, near the disused Court of Requests building in Myrtle Place. The new facility served the local community for 60 years and up until the new court house and police station were built in the Bradford Road and occupied in 1929. Myrtle Place 1860 to 1910 Myrtle Place apart from its buildings, provided open space for a number of events, some political and some social. Market stalls were allowed up until 1892 and then again from 1914 when a market was firmly established every Friday. A number of formative Independent Labour Party Meetings were held in the Place as was a meeting of the Womens Freedom League in 1907. Doubtless other political movements and causes also met in the open space. New entertainment technology also featured when a Cinematographic Exhibition was held in Myrtle Place in the early 1900’s. During this period a number of shops and businesses opened in the Place. Census returns show the establishment of Dunns Chemists in 1861 and Perfects Chemists in 1881. By 1901 Harrison’s Printers/Stationers and Stoney’s Housepainters, Staveley’s Tea Shop and Beaton’s Butchers were well established. Also recorded is the Resident Police Inspector at the Police Station The majority of buildings in Myrtle Place were still however residential accommodation for a range of trades and workpeople living and working in Bingley. Myrtle Place 1920’s - The Princess Hall and Swimming Pool The last civic building constructed in Myrtle Place and the only one remaining standing in 2013 was the Princess Hall and Bingley Swimming Pool. This was opened in 1927 by HRH Princess Mary and her husband Viscount Lascelles, the Earl of Harewood. Bradford and Bingley Headquarters 1972 The last remnant of Myrtle Place (apart from the

During the year prior to this, building of the new Bradford and Bingley Building Society Headquarters extension had commenced and the building was opened in 1975. As such the buildings on Myrtle Place that had once housed the legal centre of the town were demolished as part of this redevelopment. 1974 - 2008 During 1974 the new Arts Centre which now houses Bingley Little Theatre was constructed and in 1977 the Jubilee Gardens in close proximity to the Arts Centre were built. In 2008 a revamped Town Square was constructed. This work having been completed, only drawings, photographs and personal memories now exist of the area around the old Myrtle Place. Finally...It has happened to me... By Kimberley Devine-Harrup Editor On 29th June 2013, I finally tied the knot to my long term partner of eleven years - Simon Harrup. Not only are we now husband and wife, we are also partners in business - now trading for almost three years at Overt Marketing Ltd.

We decided to get married at the beginning of February 2013, so not much time to plan! I tried as best I could to use “Local Suppliers or at least Independent Retailers in and around the area, particulary those businesses who had supported Simon and I in our business. Following are just a few pics and recommendations of the suppliers we used when planning our wedding:

VENUE Five Rise Locks Hotel & Restaurant Beck Lane, Bingley, BD16 4DD Tel: 01274 565 296 Proprietors: Richard & Margaret Stoyle

Five Rise Locks Hotel & Restaurant allow you to book the whole house for your wedding venue. From 11am the morning of the wedding until 11am the next day, the hotel is completely yours. I loved this idea. Knowing that all my friends and family were with us and that the hotel grounds were completely ours. There are nine bedrooms including the Four Poster Bridal Suite. Just big enough to cater for a more intimate wedding. The food was excellent value for money and not forgetting how tasty it was. The staff (Richard, Margaret and their two daughters) did an amazing job from start to finish. Excellent customer service, and helped with anything we asked. They really did feel part of our wedding! 18

THE DRESS Wedding Warehouse Kirkstall, Leeds Tel: 07711 768471 Contact: Karen

I searched high and low for the perfect dress. But having visited the Wedding Warehouse, I picked up a one off prototype dress, one of its kind. At a fraction of the cost of what a boutique would sell. Albeit not so local to Bingley, Karen is an independent retailer and did a fantastic job of helping me choose the right style of dress for my body shape.

The healing garden! Obviously being a Garden Centre we feel that gardening, plants and flowers are the perfect way to create the right environment to reduce stress and to stop you rushing around. Here are some good reasons to get out in the garden • Gardening plays an important part in our emotional well-being. It’s a place where you can

become absorbed and for a brief time forget everything else and regain pleasure. • Gardening is an activity that can be shared with your children and grandchildren – the gardeners of tomorrow! • A garden can literally be physically healing if you incorporate edibles such as herbs, trees, vegetables, fruits, etc. for

their healing properties and to improve your physical health. • Gardening is free exercise... Did you know an hour of gardening can burn off about 300 calories, it is a natural way to stretch, reach, bend, walk and move. Our gardens are a vast living landscape for wildlife and the way they are cared for can make a big

The power of flowers At Woodbank Nurseries we have a special little corner, filled with gorgeous smells and eye catching colour...It’s our florist Fleuriste. We all know that flowers make us happy, but studies now show that flowers are a natural mood moderator. Flowers bring about positive emotional feelings in those who enter a room where there is a floral arrangement. Placing flowers

in the workplace makes it more welcoming and creates a happy, positive and creative environment. It doesn’t have to cost the earth but a regular floral arrangement at home or at work is a great way to keep people smiling. Our speciality is wedding flowers and our team of florists were delighted to be asked to arrange the flowers for Simon Harrup and Kimberley Devine from Overt Marketing. Kim said “The staff at Fleuriste @ Woodbank were exceptional throughout the whole process. West Riding Classic Cars buy and sell classic motor vehicles. They are not your “normal” type of wedding car supplier, but we contacted them at the last minute to arrange to use one of their lovely vehicles. I must say I wasn’t disappointed. It can be a risk to book this close to the wedding, not actually knowing what vehicles they might have in stock, but exciting at the same time. Luckily, it wasn’t one of their 1970’s Capri’s.

The dangers of sunburn

For a nation of cat lovers, we are sadly undereducated in many ways when it comes to the welfare of our purry friends. One thing that a lot of people don’t realise is that cats can become sunburnt and this can lead to skin cancer. The cats most commonly (but not exclusively) affected are cats who have white ears or noses, where there is little or no pigmentation on the skin. Cats love to be out in the hot sun, dozing in the midday glare and toasting their tummies, but the sun’s rays can be as deadly to them as they can to humans, and like with humans, it can be easily preventable. One way to stop your cat getting sunburnt is to keep her in during the hottest hours of the day. Let her out for a wander in the morning and then keep her in again until late afternoon/early evening when the sun’s rays are less strong. If that is impossible, you may consider using sunblock on the cat’s ears. Most high factor sunblocks will be suitable, although of course the difficulty is applying it and then persuading the cat not to lick it off. But so what, you might think. Does it really matter if the cat gets a bit of sunburn on her ears? Ask Puss-puss. She’ll tell you it matters. Puss-puss came into our care some time ago. Her owners moved away about a year ago and left her behind, and kind neighbours fed her. They couldn’t bear the thought of her living outside in the garden for another winter and asked us to take her. Our first glance at her ears made us think that she might have sunburn. The edges of her ears were all black and scabby, and the tips were starting to fold back. 26

|

My Community HUB

We took her to the vets who confirmed our worst suspicions - yes, the ears had skin cancer, and it was spreading down towards the base of her ears. The top left picture shows Puss-puss just after she came into our care - you may be able to make out a black smudge on the very edge of her right ear. The second two photos show sunburn in various stages - the first is an early case of sunburn, and may not develop into cancer, as long as care is taken. There are no black scabs there yet, but the ear is starting to fold a little. The second photo shows a much more advanced case - the cat here has had quite substantial scabbing on his ears and has scratched the ears so that the scab has fallen off. It will regrow. As for Puss-puss, we had no alternative but to have her ear tips removed. Had we not done so, it is likely that the cancer would have spread. Because the scabbing was down her ears almost to her head, the amputation of her ear tips was quite extreme. If you have a cat with pale/white ears or nose, keep a bottle of high factor sunblock to hand, or better still keep him indoors during the hot part of the day. It might say on the bottle “not tested on animals....”, but you’ll know differently when you look at your cat with her pristine white ears......

Beauty

Jane’s top tips to keep your skin looking radiant In our new monthly feature, we welcome Jane Richards, owner and businesswoman from Ooh La La’s Beauty Boutique in Cullingworth. Jane has a wealth of experience within the beauty industry and she will be bringing you ladies all the hints and tips you need to keep yourselves looking beautiful. This month Jane talks about caring for your skin. Tip 1 As summer is now with us and we are enjoying relaxing in the sun, it is important to take care of your skin. The skin can get very dehydrated, so here are a few tips to help keep your skin looking young and glowing throughout the summer months. Toxic free body = healthy skin. They say what you eat or drink reflects on your face. Heat and sweat can leave your body dehydrated. It is very important to keep yourself hydrated, by 28

drinking almost 12 glasses of water per day. Do make sure you avoid aerated drinks and canned juice, which can further harm your body. Green tea, fresh fruit juice, coconut water, etc. can be the preferred option. Tip 2 In the summer months we catch the suns rays tanning our skin. This increases the dead skin

cell accumulation. It is important to exfoliate your skin to remove these dead cells. One of the main reasons your skin looks dull during Summer is because of the build up of dead skin. A simple skincare regime should include a light scrub in order to achieve a healthy glowing skin. Though there are lots of brands on the market, it is also simple to make one at home using some oatmeal and olive oil. Here is one to try. Oatmeal Combine 1 tablespoon of ground oatmeal with 1/4 teaspoon of salt, which boosts the face treatment’s exfoliating properties, and 1 teaspoon of water or olive oil to make it into a paste. Gently rub it onto you skin in circular motions, let sit for 5 to 10 minutes and rinse. Ideal for sensitive skin. For further information, visit Ooh La La’s Facebook Page.

Tie a ribbon onto the wire so the finished pom-pom can be suspended. 4. Fluff tissue Gently pull apart layers of tissue and fluff them to form a sphere. Alternate between pink, lime green and white tissue to create a striped effect or choose paper in varying shades of the same colour for a floral effect. “What is life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare” This famous line taken from one of my favourite poems ‘Leisure’ by William Henry Davies was never more apt. With greetings cards companies, viral emails and facebook statuses screaming at us that ‘Life’s too short, enjoy the ride’ it’s clear that we are becoming a generation that is not stopping to stare! When was the last time you just sat down and looked at the view without checking your

emails, face book updates and putting the next appointment in your calendar? There are so many easy and natural things we can do to unwind; massages, exercise, gardening, playing with our children to name just a few... and you don’t need a lot of time to indulge in any of these. Making time for yourself is so important and you don’t have go far either...how about starting in your own garden. Check out

our feature from Woodbank Nurseries for some ideas on how gardening and flowers can help with stress. Having recently planned a wedding, whilst looking after 2 children, 2 dogs, 1 cat, a husband and our own business, I am looking into ways in which I can slow down and enjoy the ride a bit. Hat trick of finals for Wilsden Cricket Club Juniors Wilsden Cricket Club Juniors enjoyed huge success this season reaching 3 out of the 4 UAJCA cup finals. All 3 finals provided tough opposition, and the Club claimed one of the trophies available.

Under 17s win 1st William Spencer Cup Wilsden Under 17s won in their first UAJCA William Spencer Cup Final against Oxenhope. In a finals day at Haworth CC, Wilsden were represented in both matches, with the under 13s missing out to close rivals Cullingworth. But the under 17s restored Wilsden’s spirits claiming their trophy in a very entertaining match. Batting first Wilsden had a fantastic start with openers, man of the match, Saim Butt (49 runs),

U13s battle bravely against local rivals Appearing in their 3rd UAJCA John Hindle Cup Final of the past 4 years, Wilsden U13s finished runners up against a strong Cullingworth team. Going in as underdogs the team battled hard throughout, but came out second best on the day. Cullingworth scored a big total of 164 with Wilsden missing a number of key chances to take wickets. With our openers going cheaply the run chase was always going to be difficult and ultimately Wilsden fell well short of the target. Our boys did the club proud, and all credit goes to Cullingworth with a great team performance to retain the Cup. 34

and captain Ben Whitfield retiring not out with 50. After this pair departed Oxenhope got back into the match and began to take wickets. A quick fire 22 by Charlie Shimmin, with partners running out, took Wilsden’s total to 149. Wilsden bowled and fielded tightly and were always in control regularly taking key wickets. Oxenhope were dismissed for 112 with the pick of the bowlers being Charlie Shimmin with a great return of 4 for 24.

About Wilsden Cricket Club Juniors

U15s struggle in 1st Raleigh Hargreaves final Finals day 2 at Skipton CC saw the U15s face tough opposition from league leaders Oxenhope. Batting first Wilsden hoped to set a decent score to put pressure on the opposition, however from the start the team found it difficult. Captain Ben Jagger was the only player to reach double figures with 17, and the innings closed with Wilsden all out for 65. Despite their best efforts with the ball it was Oxenhope who managed to claim the trophy losing just 2 wickets on the way.

Formed in 2009 Wilsden CC Juniors offer cricket coaching for boys and girls aged from 6 to 17 in an inclusive, safe, and fun environment. Ensure your child learns to swim the right way The Swim Star way!

Prince William has backed calls for school swimming to be accessible to all primary school children. The Duke of Cambridge is in support of the Amateur Swimming Association’s (ASA) vision that every child has the right to learn to swim. The English Schools Swimming Association, which the Duke of Cambridge is patron of, says half of seven-to 11-year-olds in England, some 1.1 million children, cannot swim the length of a standard pool. Prince William outlined the importance of children being confident in water and said the benefits of swimming go beyond exercise..... Swim Stars are a very friendly swimming school, built on giving personal attention and developing excellent relationships with both swimmers and parents alike. A privately owned venture that has successfully been teaching swimming to children and adults for nearly 13 years. Since starting as a small school of five swimmers under our previous name of C.A.S.S. back in 2000, our school has grown from strength to strength with approximately 800 children having lessons with us every week.

Our team of 15, ASA qualified teachers offer swimming tuition to any ability, from babies’ right through to adults. We have a maximum of six children in our beginners’ classes, who are joined in the water by their teacher. For our intermediates, we have no more than eight in a lesson. Ducklings (adult and child in the water), and adult lessons are also taught in groups of no more than six. We hold lessons at Hazlebeck School, Bingley Grammar School and also at our own pool, Cragg Vale in Hebden Bridge. We have now opened a new office, based in Crossflatts, open between the hours of 9am - 3.30pm, where staff are on hand to deal with any queries relating to lessons at both Bingley pools. Parent Testimonials....... ‘Scarlett loves coming to Swim Stars. She is already making fantastic progress…The small group scenario is perfect and I’m sure that Scarlett will be a strong swimmer in no time’ DF (Mum of Scarlett) ‘Wilf really looks forward to his lessons. It’s great to have the teacher in the water with them. The small class size is good too’ AT (Mum of Wilf)
