Editor’s Letter Hello! and a warm welcome to our first issue of My Community Hub for 2013. I’m so glad the snow has all disappeared albeit fun for the first two days. We did lots of sledging when the schools were shut for the day !! So, we’re back into the swing of things here at MCH, and have lots of exciting new stuff planned for you this year, including our long awaited “Keep it Local” Bingley initiative. We have a good feeling about 2013 for Bingley. We are thrilled that the town now has its own Town Centre Manager, and we want to do our bit to get Bingley buzzing again, as it once was! If you want to know more about Keep it Local Bingley, you can read the reasons why we have started this on pages 12 & 13. You can also keep up to date with our campaign by visiting our website, which is www.mycommunityhub.co.uk, and please do what you can to help, it’s our town and we really can make a difference. Supporting local businesses has always been our aim and in the long run we will all benefit. British Legion Officers elected In his report to the Annual General Meeting of the Bingley Branch of the Royal British Legion, the Chairman, Mr Jim Dowzall, referred to the successful Remembrance Parade and Service held in Bingley and wished to thank all those who had been involved. Headed by the band of the Spen Valley Scouts and Guides, the Parade included the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, representatives of local organisations, Army Cadets, Scouts, Guides, Brownies and members of the general public, a total in the region of some 600 people. He also wished to thank the local people for their generosity in the Poppy Appeal where,

Following the AGM there was a light-hearted Games event and then light refreshments, as a “Thank You” to all members and particularly the volunteers, who had helped making this a successful year.
Bingley Youth Cafe - Reaching out to young people of Eldwick! Since opening in July 2011, Bingley Youth café has been providing a safe place for young people to have fun, relax and meet friends. Activities from cook and eat to arts and crafts are run by trained professional youth workers. Now in it’s second year the café is seeking to make a different in the more rural areas of Bingley. With help from the West Yorkshire Police Community Trust Fund the Youth Café staff have been able to start an outreach project in the village of Eldwick. This 16 week programme brings youth work to Eldwick every Tuesday evening 6 - 8pm. Young People aged 13 - 19 (up to 25 with a disability) are able to access a purpose built Mobile Outreach Unit in the Oak Glen Car park at Swan Avenue. Young people can access help and support from professionally qualified youth workers, take part in fun activities, improve their health and well being or simply enjoy the safe and inviting space. One Young Person from Eldwick said “I’ve enjoyed the self-esteem game because we got to find out more about other members of the group”. Paula stone Bingley Youth Café Development Worker said “We’re very thankful for the support from West Yorkshire Police Service which is 6

enabling us to reach more young people and engage them in positive activities”. Membership to the project is free. The project started on the 27th November and runs until the 5th of March 2013. What about the kids? By Erika Williman, Head of Private Divorce at Petherbridge Bassra Solicitors in Bradford. The first question that I am often asked by people thinking of divorcing or separating is ‘what about the kids?’. Whether you are married or not, it’s extremely important to ensure issues relating to children are fully resolved so everybody (and especially the children) have the support and structure they need to move forward after a relationship breakdown. The law is very much child centred in its approach to relationship breakdown. It is all too easy for communication between parents to evaporate with children sadly being used to score points against an ex-partner. Here are a few practical points to help you:1. The Role of the Parents Communicating with your former partner is crucial in respect of issues regarding your children. We do of course recognise that this can be an uphill struggle. You should seek to maintain a united front in your role as parents in the best interests of the children. That requires consultation and openness in particular managing the expectations of the children can be difficult particularly when they may be harbouring a hope that their parents may go back together. This is not an easy topic so we have put together a list of helpful reading suggestions for your family which is available on our website. 2. Contact Contact is the right of the children to see the parents, and not the other way round. You and your spouse/partner will need to speak regularly to discuss the children’s upbringing and their weekly routines so that contact can work as well as is possible. It is important that you and your spouse/partner keep each other generally informed as to where the children and each of you may be contacted. This is particularly important so that if a child is ill the other parent can be informed promptly. 3. Schooling Contact arrangements should be flexible enough that school

requirements are carried out – homework must be done, and children will want to be able to participate fully in school events. There is a balancing exercise between the child’s right to see a parents and their school commitments. 4. Holidays Both parents should organise and arrange holiday contact sufficiently in advance and communicate with each other. Going ahead and making bookings without prior discussion will cause hostility and ultimately could result in an application being to Court to provide details of the holiday or even preventing it. 5. Wishes of the Children This is an important consideration, but bear in mind the age and understanding of each child. Wishes of older children will carry greater weight than those of younger children, because of age and maturity. Equally it is important to establish the children’s wishes and listen carefully to them. This does not mean that the children get to dictate the holiday. 6. School Events For example, sports day when you might consider it sensible for you to attend together, but where there are events taking place over more than one evening (for example, a school play) you might consider attending separately. This needs to be discussed by both parents and can be a minefield if either of you has another partner that you may wish
to bring along to a school event. If there are one-off occasions that both of you wish to attend, and one of you objects to the partner of the other attending, then it is usually better for the third party not to attend. 7. Birthdays etc. You need to address well in advance who is to hold the birthday party for each child, and whether there should be two separate birthday parties. Depending on age the child’s wishes should be considered. You need to consider, also, whether the other parent should be invited. Similar considerations apply in respect of Christmas, Eid and other festivals. Typically, parents will alternate festivals between them so that, for example, one parent has the whole of Christmas Day with the children one year, and the other the next and so on. 8. New Partners A new partner should only be introduced intentionally, to the children only after careful consultation with the other parent. This needs to be done sensitively and at the pace of the child and great acre is required. It is the most frequent area of tension between parents over children. 9. A Way Forward Generally if parties tackle a potential issue early on, then the opportunities for misunderstandings and disagreements are reduced. If you and your spouse/partner find difficulty over any issue, then we would recommend that you talk things through with a mediator, rather than resorting to the courts, if at all possible. However, if reasonable discussion is not possible, the court does have to be involved. Bingley History - A Photographic Timeline Starting this month, My Community Hub will present a new feature...a collage of photographs initially concentrating on the main town centre. These are intended to capture the changes (or not) which have taken place to some notable landmarks (past and present) in Bingley over the last 120 or so years.

Local History Changes The year 1888/1889 saw the removal of the Market Hall, Butter Cross and Stocks to Prince of Wales Park and the demolition of Elm Tree Hill, to enable Main Street to be widened to allow safer passage for pedestrians and horse drawn traffic. Our photographs show the transition to a wider, tree lined thoroughfare which included the Midland Hotel (built 1891 and the new Post Office (built 1913). The first mechanised public transport - the tram, arrived in Bingley in 1914. Car and lorry transport also developed from this period onwards. The route through the town was converted for public trolley buses in 1939 and the tram rails removed during the Second World War. The anticipated rise in car ownership from the 1950’s onwards led to Bingley Urban District Council proposing a By-Pass as early as that date. However it would take until 2003 before the Relief Road was eventually opened to relieve congestion to the town.

SHREK? SNOWMAN? SIMON COWELL? BARRACK OBAMA? Yes – we’re talking about the Wilsden Mannequin
It started a few years ago, when my family and I used to drive through Wilsden from Harden on our way to Bradford. We spotted a funny looking body against a window Pane in the sleepy village of Wilsden opposite the Post Office. My children were the first to spot this strange “Shrek” looking mannequin as it used to make them giggle, and they would always point it out to us. Over the years, the strange looking mannequin changed outfits, to a Policeman, Usama Bin Laden, Simon Cowell but to name a few. And after a night out with my daughters best friends mum, it turned out that it was her brothers that started this crazy idea, much to my delight I asked for further information, as I thought this would be the perfect story for the magazine. I’m sure there are plenty of you out there wondering when it all started and who was behind the Wilsden Mannequin that caught the attention of so many local residents. Here’s their story: The mannequin started by accident about 6/7 years ago. Underneath the guises, was a slam man 2 training aid, which was stored in the garage by two
brothers (Billy & Joe). One of the brothers had pushed the training aid to the back of the garage by the Door / Window. Then one day, one of the brothers hung a coat on it to dry, and was astounded by how many people started commenting on how similar it looked to a person stood, looking out of the window. This prompted them to start making small adaptations to improve the look, transforming it into the mannequin we see today. One of the brothers Joe, always tries to dress the mannequin appropriately, and seasonal related. For instance, at Christmas you will see the mannequin dressed as a Snowman, or at Halloween, something a little more scary. The Mannequin has several guises, such as Usama Bin Laden, Barrack Obama, also a Wolfe, a Smurf, a Policeman, Simon Cowell and not forgetting Shrek !! To this date though, the Mannequin has always been a “male” and never a “female”. Potatoes are the cream of the crop Potatoes are hugely versatile and are a staple ingredient of many meals in one form or another - boiled, mashed, chipped or baked. Freshly dug and lightly boiled with mint or cooled and eaten with salads they just can’t be beaten. There are numerous ways of growing potatoes. It’s vital with early varieties and a good idea with maincrops to chit the seed tubers first before planting; this means allowing them to produce sturdy shoots. Buy your seed potatoes in late January/February and stand them rose end up (the rose end has the most eyes) in egg boxes or similar in a light, frost-free place. The tubes are ready to plant when the shoots are about 2.5cm (1in) long. Once planted, when the stems are about 23cm (9in) high, start earthing up by carefully drawing soil up to the stems and covering to produce a flattopped ridge about 15cm (6in) high. This can be done little and often or in one go. Newly emerging foliage is susceptible to frost damage. You can prevent
this by earthing up the soil around the shoots or by covering them with fleece. It’s also possible to grow them in large containers. Line the bottom 15cm (6in) of the container with potting compost and plant the seed tuber just below this. As the new stems start growing, keep adding compost until the container is full. Keep crops well watered in dry weather. A liquid feed of a balanced general fertiliser every fortnight can help increase yields.

Check that greenhouse heaters are functioning properly by investing in a maximum/minimum thermometer to enable accurate monitoring of greenhouse temperatures. Don’t forget to ventilate your greenhouse on sunny days to prevent botrytis (mould) from forming on your plants. Cover rhubarb with a rhubarb forcer to exclude light and encourage early pickings of long tender stalks.

Grand opening of Haworth Cat Rescue Charity Shop By Sara Atkinson, CEO Raising money to fund our rescue is one of the hardest things we have to do. As a charity we’d like to be able to spend all our resources caring for the cats in our care, and finding homes for those poor little furry faces who find themselves without a warm hearth and a full bowl, but in order to do this we have to generate a lot of money. Traditional sources of income, such as lottery funding, statutory funding and trust funding are denied to us, as they don’t give to animal charities and many larger companies won’t help for the same reasons or because we are so small in comparison with the big national charities. So we have to rely on donations and what we can raise ourselves. We are very fortunate that many many cat lovers want to see us succeed and donate regularly to us, but even with the kindness of these donors, we find ourselves having to make up a significant shortfall. This is why we were so excited when, at the beginning of December, the Mayor of Keighley, George Metcalf, opened our very first charity shop. This is a venture that has been many months in the planning and has been very hard work for our staff and volunteers, but the early signs are that all this has been very worthwhile. The shop is in a fantastic location, next to the pedestrian crossing at the top of Cavendish Street, Keighley and it is a lovely big shop with plenty of room to display all the great items that kind supporters have donated. We have lots of items of clothing, jewellery, toys, ornaments, books, household items and other bits and pieces, and the stock changes very quickly so there is always something new to buy. The shop will generate much needed income to help our cats, and we hope that you will be able to call in next time you’re in Keighley. 26

2013 is going to be a busy year
By Steve Warrilow Denso Marston Nature warden As we enter 2013, I have the plans for the 21st Celebration day in June to start to prepare, it is an exciting time for the reserve as we are 21 years old and this year we will have the official opening of the classroom facilities. I am looking forward to this year’s groups and schools. The classroom will open up a new era for the reserve. We will no longer be weather dependant for visits. And we can also work indoors using microscopes this will be excellent for the pond dipping sessions because it will be great to look at the tiny creatures that we have never been able to see before. I have lined up another twelve walks for the year, this year we 30

will have a series of new walks concerning the hedgerows and the wildlife that can be seen in them throughout each season of 2013. I am hoping we will find everything from mice to dragonflies. The spider club will be busy again this year, they will be looking for bugs and things and recording them for the first time by the end of the year they will I hope have quite a substantial list of creatures in and around their wildlife area. They will also be building things for wildlife like insect hotels –they have done this before this time it will be on a grand scale so watch this space. With all the disruption on the reserve in 2012 I am hoping that things will have settled down and we will get back to the calm and serenity of the reserve once more. I am hoping to do a lot of surveying on the reserve this
year. This will be mainly based around certain insects and pond life. I am at present working on a record of everything that has been recorded over the last 21 years. A mammoth amount of work as you can imagine. If you would like to come on our January walk it will be held on Sunday 13th January at 2.15pm and we will be meeting opposite the lay-by by St James church. Bingley and district football round-up By Steve Penny, of Keighley Kicks Last month’s heavy snowfall brought an unplanned midseason break to the local football season. It left two Bingley-area teams sitting pretty at the top of their respective league tables. Wilsden Athletic lead the way in Division One of the Craven League, six points clear of their nearest rivals with nine wins and two draws from their opening 12 games. Indeed, their only defeat came at the start of January, just before the white-out, and they will be keen to get back to winning ways in their bid for a Premier Division place. Ryan Gill and Tom Dibb have been the men in form, with 20 goals between them. The break also came at the wrong time for Bingley Town in Division Two of the same league. After a slow start, they had strung together a good run of form and were looking to continue their progress away from the foot of the table. In the Wharfedale Triangle Sunday League, it is new team Bingley FC Young Boys who have been setting the standard.

It could well be a promotion one-two for local clubs, because Cullingworth Youth are hot on the heels of Young Boys. In the Premier Division, both our teams are in mid-table but Crossflatts Village pulled off a superb result in their last match before the enforced break when they inflicted a first defeat of the season on leaders Keighley Town. With the league title looking beyond them and relegation unlikely, it is just town honour to play for with Crossflatts and Midland keen to finish as the top Bingley side. In youth football, it has been a mixed season so far for all our clubs with successes and disappointments aplenty for Bingley Town, Wilsden, Eldwick and Myrtle Park junior teams, who are enjoying the cut and

Harden & District Women’s Institute 50TH Anniversary 1963 – 2013 By Gaye Baird and Vicky Furness The idea for the formation of a Women’s Institute in Harden came from Mrs Evelyn Parker, whose husband’s career brought them to Yorkshire. Mrs Parker had been an enthusiastic member in Kent, and soon influenced some like-minded ladies here. Over 100 ladies arrived at the inaugural meeting in December 1962. They came from Harden, Wilsden, Cullingworth and beyond. It was soon agreed that a separate group would be based in Wilsden, while Harden and District WI was formed in January 1963. Mrs Jean Baudouin and Mrs Janet Hill have enjoyed membership for all those 50 years and continue to be leading participants in our WI activities today. Harden WI became busy with coffee mornings, fashion shows, wine and cheese parties etc to entertain and raise money from a membership of over 60. The biggest event was in 1970 when the Children’s Gala was revived and became the largest community gathering on the calendar in Harden. In fact it became too big for the WI to organise alone, and a group of village folk came to the rescue. Some of the original games and stalls made from the demolished cottages at

The funds generated from these galas were returned to the village in the form of a record player for the First School, roadside daffodil bulbs Christmas tree lights and park benches. One original bench is still in use at Glen View. Nowadays the WI continues to support the Gala by holding a cakes, produce and plants stall at the event. Our other main annual event is a Spring Market/ coffee morning to raise funds and support a local charity. All organisations have their ups and downs. The 1974 boundary changes caused consternation with strong opposition from the large Yorkshire WI Federation to being divided to match the smaller authorities. Nine years later, the West Yorkshire Federation was formed. Harden members voted to remain with the WI organisation, though a few members left to join “Yorkshire Countrywomen”. We have elected 19 ladies as President during our 50 years. Our current incumbent, Mrs Gaye Baird has held office the longest, since 2004. Unfortunately Mrs Audrey Butler and Mrs Kathleen Hopkins died in office, both having led our group enthusiastically.

Membership numbers have fluctuated; down to the twenties at one time. When new housing sprang up in 1999, we invited the residents to join, and have twice won the Shakespeare Cup from the West Yorkshire Federation for our efforts. We now have over 40 members. A competitive nature is one of our characteristics - “Harden WI” is engraved on the Tidyman Cup 14 times for our flair in the annual competition within the Lower Wharfedale Group. Our team often does well in the Federation Quiz and Mrs Sue Caswell enjoys continued success with her exquisite quilting. In our early years the National Federation of Women’s Institutes celebrated its Golden Anniversay. Under the guidance of calligrapher member, the late Mrs Vera Willoughby, a scrapbook was produced for a Yorkshire competition to record the year in the life of the village. This can be viewed at the Bradford Central Library. In our Golden Anniversary we have made a similar record with the aid of modern technology. We aimed to show life in the village in 2012 and the many facets of WI membership. Having an extremely enthusiastic committee and membership we hope to continue our tradition of friendship and service to the community for many years to come. The gifts were organised following a donation of £200 from Eldwick Parish Church.
