Welcome to the 2nd Christmas issue of My Community Hub and the last of 2012. Gosh, I can’t believe how quickly this year has passed, looking back it’s been an exciting year for us here at Overt Marketing, seeing ourselves progress from Prosider magazine, to now, the most established community magazine in the area. It gives me great satisfaction to see what we have achieved. Simon, Chris and I have had so much enjoyment putting the articles together and working with our clients, meeting new people along the way. We are glad we could help support some local Charities, and would like to think that next year we can continue to do so. So here, upon us is another year, and by golly have we got some fab stuff in store for you. We have been working on our brand spanking new website, which will bring our readers all the usual articles, competitions, money saving vouchers and offers to use locally. And....... We are also launching our new Keep it Local campaign.... Please keep an eye out in the local shops in the next couple of months, to find out how you can be part of a shop local community. We would like to thank everybody that contacted us recently letting us know how similar another local magazine now looks to ours. We are flattered that they would mimic us, and this just motivates us to bring you something better and original as ever for 2013. Don’t forget if you are socially connected – you can connect with us on

Funny stuff Once again this year, I’ve had requests for my Vodka Christmas Cake recipe so here goes. Please keep in your files as I am beginning to get tired of typing this up every year! (Made mine this morning!!!!) Ingredients: 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 cup water, 1 tsp. salt , 1 cup brown sugar, Lemon juice, 4 large eggs, Nuts, 1...bottle Vodka, 2 cups dried fruit. Sample a cup of Vodka to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Vodka again to be sure it is of the highest quality then Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point, it is best to make sure the Vodka is still OK. Try another cup just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 eegs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl a piece at a time trying to count it. Mix on the turner. If the fried

Christmas

Christmas is Coming! And this year, The Parish Church of All Saints, Bingley, has a bumper programme. By special invitation, Santa is coming and there’ll be a chance for all to visit him in his magical sparkly grotto. This is the place of dreams and little presents. And more magical than the grotto is the Stable where you’ll find the iconic Holy Family. Here, you can dress up, or simply come as you are and enter into the story that changed the face of the world. Have your photo taken with Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus.

There’ll be a FairTrade cafe and this year, there’s a little industry of Christingle making and other craft activities. The day climaxes with the Annual Christingle Service at 4.30pm.

When does all this happen? Sunday 16th December from 3pm. For this and more details of what’s on for Christmas, please go to www.allsaintsbingley.org.uk

Cat’s Corner mmunity Hub is nthly feature, My Co of what is happening mo ing nu nti co r ou In you up to date news pleased to be bringingWe are pleased to be working with such e. ntr ce wanted cats in our at the homing ich helps re-home un wh ty, ari ch tic tas a fan region.

Are you ready for a cat this Christmas? A national dog charity has the slogan “A Dog is for Life, not just for Christmas” - what excellent sentiments. You’d be forgiven for thinking in this day and age that people would know that pets are not suitable gifts if the recipient doesn’t know he or she is to receive living, breathing furry being. Sadly, you would probably also be surprised to learn how many people still follow this practise. Here at Haworth Cat Rescue, we find that most people who want a cat prefer to come to our centre and choose one themselves – or rather let the cat choose them! If we receive a call from someone wanting to surprise a relative or friend with a cat, we always suggest that they take the recipient on a “Magical Mystery Tour”, ending up at our centre where the lucky relative can take time to choose the right cat. Usually the person being given the gift is absolutely thrilled but sometimes – despite maybe having cats all their lives – they have decided to have a break from being a pet owner, maybe to enable them to travel or to undertake other pursuits for a period of time without having to worry about their cat. Imagine how awful it would be to present a pet to someone who didn’t actually want it! Much better to allow them the choice – the chance to say no, or the chance to actually meet the cat before it becomes theirs. Another scenario we often see is that of loving parents who want to give their young children the gift of a pet. Of course, in this situation the adults will be the main carers and will have decided that they want a cat – it is simply the timing that is important. Christmas is such a wonderful time for small children – all the trappings, toys, excitement and joy. But Christmas morning really isn’t the best time to introduce a new kitten or even a new adult cat to the household. Imagine being plucked from a place you know well and plonked down in a strange environment. That’s scary enough, but add to that the excited squeals of children as they 16

realise that Santa has been. The poor cat will be absolutely petrified. If you MUST get a cat or kitten at Christmas time, arrange for it to arrive during the quieter time between Christmas and New Year – let the children have some of the toys and equipment the cat will need – but delay the actual arrival until things have calmed down a bit. Conversely, if you are intending a quiet Christmas and have some time off work and at home, taking on a new cat at the start of the holiday is probably a good idea. You will have time to settle him or her and time to bond with one another before work starts again in the New Year. Whatever you do, have a GREAT Christmas, and don’t overfeed your cat!!! For enquiries please call Haworth Cat Rescue on 01535 647184 or mail@haworthcatrescue.org www.haworthcatrescue.org Opening times: Weekdays 1pm – 4pm. Sat and Sun 10.30 – 4pm Closed all day Wednesday.

Health Matters Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery in the Canalside Healthcare Centre in Bingley, will be sharing with The Hub readers exclusive advice on topical health issues and giving his tips for a healthy life.

Why no antibiotic? The weather is getting colder, days shorter, and cough and cold season has well and truly begun. Many of us are coming down with sore throats, coughs, colds, and the usual winter illnesses. Unfortunately these bugs can leave us feeling rotten, and disrupt our daily routines, and in desperation many people attend their GP hoping that “something can be done”. GP’s will often spend several consultations a day over the winter period discussing the role of antibiotics, and some patients are left feeling they are being refused a treatment from which they may gain some benefit. So why are GP’s often so reluctant to prescribe antibiotics these days? The simple fact of the matter is that the vast majority of infections of the nose, throat, sinuses, ears and even chest are caused by viruses. Antibiotics simply do not kill viruses, and therefore will have no benefit whatsoever. Our bodies have a very effective immune system that will destroy these viruses without any additional help. There are also important problems with giving unnecessary prescriptions for antibiotics. Firstly, any medication can cause side effects, and it is not uncommon to see rashes, diarrhoea, vomiting, or allergic reactions to antibiotics. We are increasingly having problems with resistance, and in it’s most severe, excessive antibiotic use is linked with MRSA and Clostridium infections, which cause prolonged illness and deaths. 18

|

My Community HUB

But what if my infection is bacterial? Many bacterial infections also do not need treatment with antibiotics. Using antibiotics will often only shorten the illness period by a matter of hours at best. Your body’s immune system is often as good at fighting bacterial infections as it is viruses. Patients are often concerned about the potential complications of not treating bacterial infections, but there is good scientific evidence that for many bacterial infections there is no reduction in complications from using antibiotics at an early stage. However, you may need antibiotics for more serious bacterial infections such as pneumonia or meningitis. Common misconceptions There are several symptoms that often seem to be a cause for concern. Green sputum is often mentioned, but this can be caused by both viruses and bacteria, and by itself is not a sign that antibiotics are required. Another belief is that a cold that develops into a cough (or “goes onto my chest”) requires antibiotics, but this is a common stage in viral illnesses. Length of illness can also be a concern. A common cold will usually last 7 to 10 days, but it is not at all uncommon for them to last up to 3 weeks. So how can I treat myself? The aim of treatment is to ease symptoms. Treatments commonly advised for viral infections include:

• Paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce a high temperature (fever), and to ease aches, pains, and headaches. • Drinking enough fluids to prevent mild dehydration. Dehydration may develop if you have a high temperature, and it can make a headache and tiredness much worse. • Not wrapping up, but trying to cool down if you have a high temperature. This is particularly important in children. If a child has a high temperature, then take their clothes off (in a warm, but not hot, room) and consider giving some paracetamol or ibuprofen. When should I go to my doctor? That’s always a tough question. If your illness feels like a simple cough or cold, there is almost certainly little that can be done. If your illness is progressively getting worse, you develop new symptoms or there is persistent fever or vomiting, it may be best to get checked out. If in doubt, many GP’s will happily offer a telephone consultation to discuss. When you are ill, doctors are skilled at checking you over to rule out serious illness, and to advise if an antibiotic is needed. If you would like to give feedback or comments to Simon regarding this feature, or would like to suggest ideas for future features, please contact him through The Hub by emailing kim@overtmarketing.co.uk

Reserve ramblings

All set for 2013 on the Reserve By Steve Warrilow Denso Marston Nature warden Another year set to close, what a year, how will we remember it? Wet, wet, wet. It’s been an event full year down on the reserve with the new classroom and toilets being installed and an office for me! It’s great having windows. I am really looking forward to 2013 all the work will have been done and we can get down to the real work. Managing the reserve and planning for our 21st celebration day. We won’t have to cancel next year if it rains we will be able to have indoor events. I am expecting a busy year from groups visiting already I have several groups that have booked for next year. This year we have had around forty groups that have visited the reserve. The highlight of the year was the Forest Schools with Funtastic

from Baildon they came for the summer holidays and we had a rare old time if you see them ask them about Bogart’s. The numbers of visitors have been down this year due to the rain I am hoping that it will be better next year. It will be sunny! Though with all the rain and everyone being generally fed up it hasn’t all been doom and gloom we had our best ever nesting season with over a hundred blue and great tit chicks fledging from our nest boxes. We also had Jay nest for the first time on the reserve. I have moth trapped throughout the year numbers were down we did have 11 new species for the reserve which was pleasing next year there will be two moth traps running one so I am hoping we will have a bumper crop of moths in 2013. On Sunday 16th December we will be having our last walk for 2012. The Xmas preserve we will be having a final walk around the reserve and seeing what birds are about hopefully we will see a deer or two then we will then tuck into the delights of home

baking, all baked by visitors and volunteers, this year there may be some baking by the warden watch this space. I would like to thank you all for reading my monthly ramblings it’s been an absolute joy. So I hope you have a very jolly Christmas and rain free New Year. If you want any information about the reserve please call me on 07919525913 or take a look on our website dm-naturereserve.org.uk

St Ives Visitor and Education Centre opened by Michael Ferrand A Historic Event recently occurred at St Ives with the opening of the long awaited Visitor and Education Centre. This has been created in the two newly restored rooms in part of the old Coach House and the History Herb Garden opposite. The restoration was funded by our £250,000 Award from WREN. The opening ceremony and ‘cutting of the ribbon’ was carried out by Mr Michael Ferrand, who is the most ‘directly in line’ descendant of the Ferrand Family who owned the Estate from the early 17th centuryt to the 1920’s. Although now living in France, he kindly flew to England with his wife and daughter especially for this event. Other members of the Ferrand family were also present including Michael’s cousin, David Ferrand. Michael has been supporting our research into his family in recent years and has given us a great deal of information including photographs of his familiy portraits stretching back through history. (These can now be seen in the Visitor’s Centre.) When asked how he felt walking around the Estate knowing that if his great Grandfather had not sold St Ives to the Council in 1927 for £39,500, he would now own St Ives: did he have feelings of regret?; Michael said that he felt that the worry of the costs of maintaining the Estate and all its buildings in the present financial times would have far outweighed any joy in owning it. He said he was just so happy that once again St Ives was being cared for and protected so that everyone was able use and be part of such a beautiful place. Ironically, one of the reasons William Ferrand decided to sell his Estate was he was increasingly irritated by the number of ordinary local people 26

How to handle a dog begging for food A dog begging for food is one of the most common discipline issues that dog owners face. An unfortunate side effect of loving our dogs so much is that we would like to give them everything that they want. So when our dogs start begging for food, it’s almost too much for us to bear... and we cave in! With a little willpower and discipline on your part, though, begging can be one of the easiest behaviours to correct. Follow these simple tips to turn your begging dog into a productive member of society! Do not give food to begging dog. This tip may seem like common sense, but you’d be surprised how few people consider it when they’re looking into the wide, wet eyes of their beloved canine companion. That high-pitched whine is an effective tool against you, and your dog knows it. Why? Because it’s worked before! Giving food is a form of affection, and giving affection reinforces the behaviour preceding it. Your dog has learned that if he begs, he gets

food! Take a stand and start a new trend. Find the willpower to withhold that food, and your dog will learn that he can’t expect rewards for begging behaviour. Ignore a begging dog. Begging is an attentionseeking behaviour. Rather than give in to your dog’s demands, ignore the behaviour and teach your dog that it does not get results! When you talk to your dog, give him affection, or engage in direct eye contact, you are feeding his mental state. Therefore, to avoid encouraging negative behaviours, try to avoid eye contact, verbal commands or indeed physical touch. To put it simply, ignore your dog! Don’t feel sorry for your dog. Your dog is well-fed. You should know; you feed him! He is not in danger of going hungry if you don’t give him that scrap off the table, so don’t feel sorry for him when he flashes you those doughy eyes and places a single paw on your leg. If you become concerned about how much your dog should be fed, talk to your vet or seek advice from a

professional. This can help ease your concerns and allow you to focus on doing what’s best for the dog! Use discipline consistently. In any kind of training, consistency is the key to success. For your dog to learn that his begging behaviour is ineffective, it has to be ineffective 100% of the time. Inconsistent enforcement of the rules leads to an inconsistently obedient dog! Make sure that every pack leader in the household understands and enforces the same rules. Be patient. Few dogs change overnight. If you have followed these tips to the letter and your dog continues to beg, don’t despair! See the last tip: use discipline consistently. Stay consistent and don’t give up. Your reward will be a better behaved dog! Contact: Andy Thompson on 01535 274 431. Wilsden Animal Feeds, The Old Stable, Main Street, Wilsden, Bradford, BD15 0HY
