2021 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
GROW:
Dear Friends,
In 2021, our communities were still navigating a global pandemic and its resulting challeng es. Our donors stepped up, taking the time to reflect and intentionally plan and prioritize their giving efforts. The Community Foundation board of directors, volunteers, and staff were no dif ferent.
The Community Foundation invested considerable time completing a five-year strategic plan. Together, board members and staff aligned on three priorities: building deeper relationships, knowledge, and connections across our service area; ensuring sustainability to support future growth; and fulfilling our commitment as a proactive and collaborative community leader. These priorities will fuel our mission of connecting people who care with causes that matter.
However, before we step into the future, we need to reflect and celebrate successes throughout the year– many of which you will read about in the following pages and all of which would not be possible without the philanthropy-minded individuals, families, and organizations that make our region so special.
In 2021, we helped 16 donors establish new charitable funds to fulfill their goals – all of which are unique in the causes and organizations they support. We grew our region’s charitable re sources through $5.1 million in gifts – an inspiring number considering the uncertainty which loomed over much of the previous year. And, we issued $1.8 million in grants to local nonprofits to support their good work. All of these accomplishments are a testament to the generosity of our region and its people. And all of it means more dollars to support our local needs, opportu nities, and nonprofits today and for generations to come.
The Community Foundation has continued to grow, by engaging new donors, facilitating gen erous gifts to either start new funds or contribute to existing ones, and assisting the nonprofits who make our communities great.
I am grateful for the contributions of each and every one of you – whether you’re a donor, non profit leader, board member, committee member, volunteer, staff, or a friend of philanthropy. Your contributions are critical to the Community Foundation’s mission and vision and to a brighter, more prosperous region. Your Community Foundation is working daily with donors of all ages to help our communities thrive. Why? Because there’s no place like home.
With gratitude, Lance Grady, Chair, Board of

Inspiring Philanthropy, Advancing Opportunity
Dolly Parton’s Book-Gifting Program Expands in Northeast Missouri
Whether it’s fighting off dragons or riding on the back of a unicorn into a new realm, a child’s imagination is expanded through reading. However, access to books prior to beginning school can be an obstacle, especially in rural communities and lower-income households, limiting these brain-building opportunities.
In parts of Northeast Missouri, families may have to travel upwards of 20 miles to access a library. This can create a literacy barrier for many families.
In 2021, the Community Foundation awarded a grant to United Way of the Mark Twain Area to reduce this barrier and get more books in the hands of children through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program.
The grant was made possible by unrestricted endowment funds, which enable the Community Foundation to respond to needs and opportunities as they emerge. Donors work with the Community Foundation to establish permanent charitable funds, called endowments, to support their philanthropic goals and community. The Community Foundation invests and grows those funds, and each year, a portion of the fund’s earnings are distributed as grants while the principal remains intact.
A total of 21 unrestricted endowment funds have been established to support our region not only today, but for generations, including the Carl, Althea, & Cathy Wiskirchen Endowment. Carl was known to be a low-key person who always thought luck was on his side, even after the death of his only daughter, Cathy, who passed away at age 10. Carl’s wife, Althea, could always be found with a book either in her hand or close by.
“Donors who establish unrestricted endowment funds are visionary. They entrust us to steward their gifts to help when, where, and how it is needed most,” explained Community Foundation CEO Catherine Meckes. “Although Carl and Althea Wiskirchen are no longer with us, we like to think they would be proud to see their fund nurturing a love of reading in our community’s youngest readers.”
Through Parton’s program, a child receives an age-appropriate book every month, mailed to their house, from the time they are born until they turn five. This means, if a child is enrolled in the program when they’re born, they will have a personal library of 60 books by the time they are ready to enter kindergarten.
“Kindergarten teachers will attest that children who are read to regularly prior to coming to school are much more likely to be successful,” said United Way of the Mark Twain Area Director Denise Damron. “We want all children to have the ability to achieve their potential and if having books can help in this quest, then we want all children to have access to books.”
Community Impact
Damron leveraged Community Foundation grant funds to award seed dollars for local organizations to launch Imagination Library in the Canton School District, Palmyra School District, South Shelby School District, and for Marion County R-II students.
Because Carl Wiskirchen’s – and the rest of our 21 unrestricted funds – are endowed, they will continue to grow and make programs like this possible for generations to come.

Igniting Community Impact: 2021 Friend of Philanthropy Awards
In November of 1997, a small group of committed citizens invested in the future of our region by establishing the Community Foundation. The reason was simple: they believed that by working together, we could enrich the quality of life in our communities now and for future generations.
Nearly 25 years later, more than $13 million has been granted back into our region and beyond. This is all thanks to the vision and partnership of our donors, nonprofits, and supporters – our friends of philanthropy.
Two of these partners were honored during the 2021 Community Foundation Week (Nov. 12-18) with a Friend of Philanthropy
program, which collectively is worth – between the five County Endowments – more than half a million dollars and has granted collectively more than $86,000. As part of Don’s award, he was asked to nominate a nonprofit to receive a $1,000 grant. Recognizing its impact and potential, Don selected the Pike County Endowment Fund . This grant was matched through the “Double Down for Pike County” matching gift challenge – refer to page 7 in this report for more information on that effort.

Award, recognizing an individual and a nonprofit instrumental in helping us achieve our vision of improving the quality of life throughout the communities we serve.
Don Kirk from Pittsfield, Illinois is not only a believer, but a champion of the Community Foundation mission. He served on the board of directors from 2005-2010 and remains a member of the governance/personnel committee, helping recruit high-quality volunteers year after year. Don also helped spark the concept of the County Endowment Fund program after witnessing wealth transferring out of Pike County between generations. The Pike County Endowment Fund served as a pilot for the
Its strategic partnerships with area churches, businesses, and community organizations allow it to work towards its mission of feeding the mind, body, and soul. A recent partnership includes the “Living Room” with Transitions, hosting a supportive environment for individuals to cope with mental health issues, recognizing that many of their clients need support beyond a hot meal. Horizons received a $1,000 grant in recognition of the award.
We are thankful to work closely with both Don and Horizons as we continue on our mission of “connecting people who care with causes that matter.”

A Donor’s Decision
The Meaning Behind A Purposeful Intent
“Giving back” has a different meaning for each of us. For Quincy resident, Marty Didriksen, giving back meant building a lasting legacy through a fund she started at the Community Foundation in memory of her late daughter – the Cory Didriksen Lovelace Fund.
Music has always been a part of the Didriksen family’s rhythm. From the sounds coming from a piano, to the cello, to the oboe and French horn; music brought a source of comfort and peace to Marty and Cory.
“We’ve always believed in the arts,” said Marty. “We grew up with it. It was just part of our lives.”
Cory began playing the oboe in 3rd grade and took part in the musical programs offered through the Quincy Public School system. She was a 1986 graduate of Quincy High School and a 1990 graduate of the University of Iowa. Cory loved her community and loved to give back in any way she could. She was a member of Friends in Council, Quincy Service League, The Women’s Interdenominational Bible Study, First Union Congregational Church, Madison School and Baldwin School PTA and was a room mother.
After Cory’s untimely passing in 2006, Marty knew she wanted to do something to honor her daughter and keep her daughter’s name in the community in a positive light. That’s why, she says, she decided to start the Cory Didriksen Lovelace Fund to support and enhance music

Preparing for Possibilities
Community Foundation Adopts New Strategic Plan
Endowment means forever -- and forever takes careful planning.
Under the guidance of Ekstrom Alley Clontz & Associates, the Community Foundation board of directors and team took part in a strategic planning retreat in August 2021 at Gardner Camp in Hull, Illinois. In December, a strategic plan for 2021-2025 was adopted.
To ensure that we continue to advance local philanthropy, your Community Foundation will focus on growing three key pillars of our work – philanthropic service, sustainability, and leadership. These priorities are reflected in our 2030 vision statement:
The Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois & Northeast Missouri is a valued partner in and catalyst for community improvement and a trusted philanthropic advisor, helping charitably-inclined individuals create and refine meaningful local impact.
Pike County (IL) “Doubles Down” for Local Philanthropy!
Residents in Pike County, Illinois not only recognize the significance of their county endowment fund, they double down for it!
In September 2021, the Pike County Fund Council accepted an invitation from an anonymous donor to grow the Pike County Endowment Fund by $50,000. The Council had until December 31, 2021 to secure donations from multiple donors totaling $25,000 to match the anonymous donor’s gift of $25,000. The effort was fittingly dubbed the “Double Down for Pike County” Challenge.
Before the deadline, the Fund Council announced that it not only met – but exceeded -- the match, securing more than $40,000 in donations. Including the anonymous donor’s gift, the fund received a boost of more than $66,000.
Because these dollars are endowed, they will generate new dollars through investment growth for charitable grantmaking in Pike County every year in perpetuity.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to match the anonymous donor’s generous gift,” said Kaye Iftner, Pike County Fund Council Chair. “What each donor contributed will permanently benefit needs and opportunities in our community. By investing into the Pike County Endowment, we are able to grow our grantmaking capacity now and for generations. Thank you to all who contributed to this effort.”
Thank you for your role in growing local giving and bettering our region. We are more motivated than ever to deepen our mission, serve our communities, and honor the legacies of those who have entrusted us with charitable funds.
The Pike County Endowment Fund, established in 2008 by residents of Pike County, is as a way to secure local assets to permanently support charitable needs and opportunities in Pike County. Since then, it has granted over $24,000 to more than a dozen local nonprofits with the help of contributions from more than 145 people, organizations, and businesses.
Adams, Brown, Hancock, Lewis, and Marion Counties have also established and grown County Endowments. Any county within the Community Foundation’s service area is eligible to establish an endowment and receive a $15,000 match to jump-start their efforts.

Their vision and action created the Community Foundation on November 26, 1997. By December 31, which marked the end of the first fiscal year, the Community Foundation held $1,050. Additional financial support was committed. That enabled the newly formed Community Foundation to embark upon work to offer people from all walks of life the opportunity to build funds to help address needs and opportunities today, tomorrow— forever.
The Founders Circle includes those whose vision and generosity have made it possible for the Community Foundation to strengthen communities in West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri now and for generations to come.
