I

t could be the largest capital project in West Valley City history and would put the city on the map as a regional medical care destination.

University of Utah Health is proposing to build what it describes as a “full-service health, community and education center” with the centerpiece being a full-service hospital a bit smaller than the size of its flagship University Hospital on the U of U campus.

The complex will be developed on a 21-acre site at 3700 S. 5600 West. Groundbreaking for the first of what is expected to be a multiphase project is tentatively planned for 2024 with an opening in 2027.

“This health and community center will be the first of its kind in the valley and possibly the state,” Dr. Michael Good, CEO of University of Utah Health, said in a statement.

Besides medical care, the complex will also be a center for teaching and training students in various health care professions in partnership with Salt Lake Community College and could create about 1,400 jobs from nursing assistants to doctors.

“We’re excited about the possibilities,” University of Utah President Taylor Randall told the West Valley City Journal. “And most importantly, excited about working with the communities out there to Continued page 5

Student group pushes for carbon-free energy use in Granite School District

A

group of current and former students in the Granite School District is on a mission to get the district to reduce its carbon footprint by using entirely clean energy by 2040.

The Granite Clean Energy Team is gathering signatures on a petition to urge the Granite School Board to adopt a resolution committing the district to using 100% clean electricity in its more than 80 schools across central Salt Lake County by 2030. It would also call for an end to using fossil fuels for school buses and other district vehicles, heating and cooling systems, and cooking by 2040.

“It includes incremental goals to build on the district’s ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption,” said team leader Ava Curtis, a senior at Taylorsville High School.

She said the student-led initiative is similar to one in the Salt Lake City School District in 2020 that resulted in its board passing a resolution to move to clean power and weaning itself off fuels over that same 2030-40 schedule.

Curtis and her cohorts have met with Granite board members several times over the last couple of years to get them to approve the resolution. “We’re just hoping we can gather some public support so they (board members) can see this is really something they should be prioritizing.”

The petition had over 1,000 signatures as of mid-March from “students, parents, teachers and community members,” according to Curtis. “We’re also asking the community to call the Granite School Board and voice their support for clean energy.”

The Utah chapter of the Sierra Club is providing some logistical, messaging, and financial assistance to the Clean Energy Team.

drive to put the district on a zero emissions and conservation path is laudable, it likely won’t happen as envisioned by the group and its supporters.

“Our board doesn’t engage in the resolutions business,” Horsley said. “The goals outlined in the resolution are not attainable,” he added, referring to the 2030 timeline.

“We’ve been very honest with them about some of the things that are a little more feasible and some that are not.”

Energy-saving equipment has been installed at some schools, Horsley said, citing solar panels at newer facilities like South Kearns and Olene Walker elementary schools.

The cost of doing the same at older schools usually doesn’t make financial sense. “We want to do what’s right by our taxpayers and be fiscally prudent while pursuing any and

all energy-efficiency opportunities to the highest degree possible,” Horsley said, noting that the budget can cover only so many things while the district carries out its core mission of educating students.

Neil Armstrong Academy is a STEM-focused elementary school in West Valley City.

It opened in 2013 and its construction was able to include a geothermal heating and cooling system. It pulls heat from 200 to 300 feet below underground through a system of pipes to warm a building. “Even on the coldest winter day, the earth is going to have a substantially higher temperature than the air,” said Granite Assistant Superintendent of Support Services Don Adams.

help cool the building. Electric pumps circulate the air. Several other district schools use such energy where the geology allows.

That is one example of how the district is trying to reduce its environmental impact and cut energy costs. “The easiest way to not pollute, to use energy wisely, is to conserve,” Adams said. Motion and daylight sensors on lights, good insulation, and energy-efficient windows are also part of the mix.

Meanwhile, Curtis won’t stop trying to make a difference when her high school career ends in May. “I’m hoping to continue my passion for clean energy in college.”

She wants to pursue environmental studies at the University of Utah or the University of Washington. l

The Utah Legislature authorized the Utah Board of Higher Education to acquire a $400 million bond on behalf of U of U Health—much of it to build the hospital. Additional funds will be raised for equipment, furnishings and the like. “All in all, it’s estimated to be about a $500 million project,” Randall said. “The business case is quite compelling, given the health care needs and also what we are hoping to be able to do with respect to job development in that area.”

The hospital will provide emergency services and an array of other types of medical care that are still being considered. “Everything from cancer treatment to diabetes to maternity,” Randall said of the possibilities.

While the general concept of the campus is taking shape, Randall, who took over as the university’s 17th president last summer, said much work remains to be done.

Aiding in that effort is the school’s University Neighborhood Partners, a group that brings together the university and organizations representing residents of Salt Lake County’s west side communities to improve the quality of life. “Hopefully, there will be

a lot of community input as we get this put together,” Randall said.

When fully completed as planned in the coming years, it will likely be the most expensive development ever undertaken in West Valley City. “I don’t know that there’s one that will outdo this one,” said Mayor Karen Lang.

It’s another sign of the city’s coming of age with the redevelopment of the area around city hall, a burgeoning light industrial corridor on the north side, and commercial and housing development on what available land remains around the city. “I think people are realizing what a great city we are,” Lang

The change sees District 1’s population reduce by almost 1,400.

District 2, represented by Councilman Scott Harmon, will see his district officially squared off ceding area between 2700 West and I-215 to District 1. But a small rectangular piece of land from District 3 between 4800 West and approximately 4400 West will move into District 2.

Harmon’s district, the smallest in population size and covers the central portion of the city, will increase by about 2,300.

District 3, represented by the newly chosen Councilman William Whetstone, covers the north to northwestern portion of the city. While the district cedes land to District 2, Whetstone’s area acquires the area between Bangerter and 3600 West and a little bit to 3200 West between 3100 and 3500 South.

Though staff would have preferred the second option with cleaner boundary lines, the majority of the council were happy with either option with Huynh and Harmon preferring the option that was chosen.

“I think option 1 keeps the districts closer to what they are now,” Councilman Lars Nordfelt said. l

The West Valley City Council unanimously approved the newly drawn lines in March where slight adjustments were made to three of the city’s four districts.

According to the 2020 census, West Valley City’s population stands at 140,230. State code stipulates districts must maintain “substantially equal population.”

Keeping populations within 2% of the ideal population number (35,057 in this case), ensure boundaries followed major streets and keeping councilmembers within their districts were among the major guidelines city officials used when drawing the new maps.

District 4, represented by Councilman Jake Fitisemanu Jr., remained the same with a population size of 35,172. The district covers the southwestern portion and is geographically the largest in the city.

The changes came to the other three districts.

District 1, represented by Councilman Tom Huynh, covers the northeast portion of the city. Previously, his boundaries ran down Bangerter Highway to 3500 South before jutting east to I-215. Now the border with District 3 along Bangerter moved east to 3600 West where it runs south to 3100 South before jutting east to 3200 West. It then runs

The mayor said the new health care campus will not diminish the importance of Jordan Valley Hospital’s West Valley Campus in the central part of the city. “Jordan Valley has served West Valley so well for so long and will continue to do so,” she said of the facility previously known as Pioneer Valley Hospital.

Despite who feels they’ll benefit most from the future University of Utah Health campus—the university, West Valley City, or people who live on the west side of the valley—“We hope it’s a win for all of us,” Randall said. l

Entheos Academy continues enrichment program throughout the pandemic

E

ntheos Academy, a service learning public charter school in Magana and Kearns, has found creative methods to keep its enrichment programs running the past two years in spite of pandemic restrictions.

“We've found ways to safely continue the Discovery program for our kindergarten through eighth-grade students, along with our middle school Adventure program, during the pandemic,” Service Learning Director Manager Melanie Louviere said. “Instead of leaving campus for activities or bringing people into the school, instructors taught things they already knew or learned new skills.”

Prior to the pandemic, the Discovery program classes were led by people in the community. “We feel that it is important for the school and the students to have those community relationships,” Louviere said.

"As Discovery Coordinator, I enjoy that I am able to search and find classes that will allow our student body to explore unique and different classes,” Alicia Seely said. “At the end of their session, whether they enjoyed the class or not, they stepped out of their comfort zone and tried something new. They learned something new about themselves.”

According to Louviere, the Discovery enrichment program has been in place

several years and is at no cost to students.

“This gives students an opportunity to find new interests and skills regardless of talent level and financial situation,” Louviere said. “It offers students from lowerincome families opportunities they might not be able to do otherwise.”

The grade levels choose topics for month-long projects, and the groups have been meeting one afternoon a week either during the school day or outside school hours. The program has included classes such as coding, science, Zumba, pickleball, Quidditch, fine arts, sports, sewing, floral design, leather crafting, stage makeup, glass fusing and culture-related projects.

“Even though it looked different, students were still able to do all these things during the pandemic,” Louviere said. She added that this year the program was able to go back to in-person programming by bringing back outside instructors.

In addition to the Discovery program, the Adventure program has been able to again take students out in the field for hands-on learning while camping in various tourist places like Dinosaur National Monument and Moab. Each trip includes six to eight students for a three-day, twonight trip. “The programming is built around current curriculum and includes some service work,” Louviere said.

The sixth-grade group goes to Cedar City to study archeology and ancient civilizations, ecosystems, mountains and deserts. The seventh-grade group goes to Moab as part of a combination of Utah studies class and career and college awareness.

“Our school believes that all students have skills and talents, and these programs give them an opportunity to use those,” Louviere said. “It is such an important opportunity for them, and it builds their confidence and skills.” l

My year with the City Journals: A reflection and review of the contributions of women

S

ince I began as a reporter for the City Journals, I have had the privilege of interviewing some amazing people. The interview process has always been my favorite part of reporting.

I have always enjoyed meeting someone new, learning about what makes them unique and writing their story for others to read.

During March, the stories being shared were about women. March 8, officially known as International Women’s Day, was a day to highlight the unique contributions and achievements of women the world over. To put it more eloquently, “to provide education on how women helped shape the nation [world].”

I’ve come to learn through my first year writing for the City Journals just how much women help shape our community and world.

And how important their stories are to tell.

I got the lead for my first story from Facebook, where I was able to get in touch with Kim Deverall, who specialized in giving haircuts to those living with special needs. We met at the salon she worked at, JCPenney at the District.

Deverall works to meet new clients and make new connections providing one-on-one service for clients who have special needs due to autism or other neurological divergent disorders.

“I am so lucky and honored to be in a position to help a population that is so frequently misunderstood,” Deverall said. “I love working for a company that has given me the ability to give neurodivergent individuals the dignity and socialization they deserve.”

I then had the opportunity to interview another woman who took a big chance only to have it pay off in a delicious way. I met Carol Timmons, a business owner in South Jordan, and reported on her little slice of heaven in Flake Pie Company.

Recently, Flake contributed $11,152 to help those in Ukraine through the CARE Ukraine Crisis Fund. According to an Instagram post, the Flake Pie Company team baked and sold 3,477 flakies, their signature pastry.

Anna Linner was a true gem from the moment I met her at the South Jordan Public Library. I wandered in one day looking for story leads actually, and Linner greeted me at the front desk, behind a large plastic shield (thanks Covid). I knew she had a story to share. And it turns out, I wasn’t wrong. Born in Hungary, she went on to earn a master’s of library sciences degree at age 50, to become a full-on librarian. Linner continues to work at the South Jordan library.

I was enthusiastic to learn that there was a new Girl Scout troop being formed in South Jordan last summer for girls enrolled in kindergarten or first grade, and that Jen Bingman was to be their leader. Twice a month Bingman lets a group of talkative and eager five to seven year olds in her backyard to teach them things about building robots, planting trees and selling cookies.

“We’ve had a fun first year with our Daisy troop,” Bingman said. “Our troop has had special challenges regarding meetings with Covid restrictions, cookie delays due to supply chain issues, and losing four troop leaders, but our families rallied around our troop to provide the support we needed to continue with our endeavors.”

Then I met Durga Ekambaram after I saw her mural under the bridge of the Jordan River Trail at 10600 South. I have been able to follow her work on social media. The patience and the persistence it must take to create, to have an idea and to have to slowly nurture it to life is inspiring on many levels.

The trail mural project has given Ekambaram the confidence to explore new mediums and techniques. In February, her mixed media artwork was selected to be displayed at the World of the Wild art show at the Hogle Zoo. Her watercolor paintings were also selected in November 2021 to be featured on a utility box in Daybreak. She is looking forward to several art displays at South Jordan City Hall, Millcreek Library and Utah Cultural Center.

I was once again amazed not only by the physical strength of women, but their mental strength as well. I met Debbie Millet, a former weightlifting champion and now a coach to young women competing in the clean and press and the snatch. I spoke to some of these young women, in particular Malia Levy and Maci Wynn, who talked about their training schedules and their determination, and what it meant to have a female role model like Millet.

According to Millet, Levy took gold at the American Open in Ohio late last year, and will

represent team USA at the Youth Pan Am and Youth Worlds this upcoming summer of 2022.

Wynn is now one of the top three women in the country, lifting the previous American record in the snatch event. Wynn is now in a position to make the 2024 Summer Olympic team.

Most recently, I met the heartwarming group known as Females in Action Salt Lake Valley or FIA. They welcomed me into their group, challenged me to a little physical exercise routine, gave me a nickname and explained how they as a group look out for one another. It was heartwarming to see, as we live in a world

that can be so divided, that these women will welcome and accept other women regardless of race, religion, economic status and a host of other things that often keep people at bay.

We have women in our communities who are leaders, mentors, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, volunteers, professionals and all-around positive influences. All of these women, and many others like them whose stories I have yet to share, help shape the community, and their stories are relevant.l

he classic coming-of-age novel “Little Women” has been adapted to the stage where audience members can share the joyful message of dreams, love and family with the four March sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, in a live musical performance.

With its inspiring lyrics and elegant music, “Little Women, the Broadway Musical” is sure to introduce new fans to its heartwarming message. “‘Little Women’ is about 10 really good human beings and it’s about strong women who solve problems with so much love,” said Jim Christian, “Little Women” director. “The music is beautiful and there are moments that are so touching and poignant.”

While many Broadway shows are based on spectacle and show-stopping musical numbers, “Little Women” is a more subtle take on the genre where the focus is on the characters. “The spectacle is in the people and the music,” Christian said.

Whether it’s costuming, scenes, sounds or props, the design teams bring something exciting to the show. The fluid staging and scene transitions are creative

and non-intrusive. Actors in the production come from all over the area, from Ogden to Orem, and each contribute to the musical with their own unique talents. “[Audiences] are going to see firstclass performers,” Christian said. “It's a great show to see with people you care about. It’s just life-affirming and good.” ​Based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, “Little Women” takes place in Massachusetts during the Civil War. The March sisters and their mother experience financial difficulty while Mr. March is serving as a chaplain in the Union Army. Through acts of kindness, moments of bravery, and scenes of great sadness, the audience connects to the innate goodness of the characters.

The show will be performed at the West Valley Performing Arts Center (3333 Decker Lake Dr.) with an opening night on April 21 and the final performance on May 14. Tickets are available at WVCarts.org.

West Lake STEM Junior High School rebuilds after earthquake

C

onstruction is underway for the new West Lake STEM Junior High School, at 450 W. 3400 South in West Valley City. The occasion was marked with a groundbreaking ceremony March 18 to celebrate the continuation of school’s almost 60-year history.

The ceremony, two years from the date of the earthquake in 2020, featured short speeches from school leaders and local representatives, as well as selected student performances.

The original building sustained significant damage during the earthquake, leading to a temporary relocation of the school. Following extensive building assessments, the Granite Board of Education decided to rebuild instead of repair the original damaged structure.

“After the earthquake, the school was relocated to the old Westbrook Elementary school campus at 3451 W. 6200 South,” principal Tyler Howe said. “The original building had been in West Valley since 1964.”

“This is a home to our community. It’s exciting to watch the next chapter open, and our students get to be the authors of that chapter,” Howe added.

The new West Lake building will be modeled after an existing Utah middle school building, Hidden Valley Middle School, that

was completed in 2020.

Howe said the new building will incorporate space for collaborative learning with rollaway walls that will shift four sets of classrooms into one. Because the school has a STEM focus, hands-on learning and collaborative learning are a central part of the curriculum which the layout will support, he said.

“While the school currently has seventhand eighth-grade students, the new building will accommodate three grades to be prepared for sixth grade if the school expands,” Howe said.

Enrollment has been steady throughout the move from the original campus, according to Ben Horsley, Granite School District communications director. “It is a popular school location because of its STEM focus,” he said.

“We are essentially building a new school at the same cost of what it would have been to restore the old building,” Horsley said. “The original building was built in 1963 at the cost of $2.4 million, and the new building will cost $55 million.”

It is anticipated the new building will be ready August 2024. The school currently has 775 students and 40 teachers. Howe has been the principal for six years.

Wetland park coming to WVC

etland area at 6598 South and Parkway Boulevard is currently being designed to become a wetland park.

The area, currently used primarily as storm water storage and houses the park maintenance facility on its westside, features almost 72 acres of land. In March the West Valley City Council approved a resolution that procured ArcSitio Design, a landscape architect design firm in Salt Lake City, for the design and construction of the entire park.

“We would like to develop it into a wetland park area so the public can see and be educated on stormwater and wetlands,” Jason Eriksen told the council in February.

Eriksen is the city’s assistant parks and recreation director.

Eriksen said they’d like the entire park designed now and then split into phases so that as money becomes available, they can move forward immediately rather than continuously returning to the planning phase.

Assisted by the support from the Granite Technical Institute, Utah State Extension program, the National Ability Center and Valley Behavioral Health, Eriksen said they acquired a $2 million Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Grant Award to begin construction. The project altogether is estimated

to be $13.5 million.

The planned wetland park is expected to add a new wrinkle to West Valley City’s current park landscape. Centennial Park serves as the city’s largest park and is primarily sports oriented with its soccer and softball fields, outdoor pool, skate park and pump track.

The city also features a majority of community parks, smaller areas that serve as close proximity to neighborhoods.

City officials eyed a wetland park for a number of years now. Parks and Recreation Director Nancy Day told the West Valley Journal in 2018 when the pump track was completed that a wetland park was a possibility for the Parkway Boulevard area pending potential funding, saying at the time it would “fit a different kind of niche.”

ArcSitio Design has worked with multiple governmental entities over the years, the company is responsible for the county’s Wheadon Farm Park in Draper, winning a design award from the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The recently approved agreement is only for design and construction documents.

As money for construction becomes available, different areas of the park will be developed. ”l

Health department seeks films sharing stories of resilience

A

spiring filmmakers who have a story to tell of resilience can showcase their short original film in Salt Lake County Health Department’s fourth annual film festival.

The contest is open to seventh- through 12th-grade students who live in Salt Lake County. The 30- to 60-second films are to show or discuss how they, or those around them, have demonstrated resilience in mental health, physical health and/or social health.

This year’s theme, “Stories of Resilience” was determined by the Salt Lake County Healthy Teens Coalition.

“The youth expressed sincerely the need to expand on our theme from previous years,” said Julia Glade, Salt Lake County Health Department healthy communities coordinator. “We value the youth voice, especially when it comes to learning how public health topics have an impact on them and their community. The film festival is a terrific opportunity to motivate teens to continue engaging in these important conversations about to their physical, mental and social health, especially after the last two years they’ve endured during the pandemic.”

The contest first began as the Kick Ash Film Festival in 2019, with previous festivals asking students to target their films to other youth about the dangers of youth e-cigarette use.

Post-festival evaluation efforts found that 78% of teens who participated had a changed (more negative) perception of e-cigarettes, Glade said.

The community also supported the expanded vision of the film festival.

“It’s a fun event and the community sponsors value the youth’s vision and values on health topics and the impact these have on them and their families. It’s motivating to hear teens talk to their peers and their families about mental, physical and social health issues and hear their stories about resiliency through film,” she said.

Sponsors, including Get Healthy Utah, HealthChoice Utah, Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital and Unite Us, have donated prizes and cash to the top three winners in grades seven through nine, and also in grades 10-12. Winners will be determined by a panel of judges from Salt Lake County

Hunter swimmer wins 100 backstroke state championship

A

ngel Nunez-Ianza, a senior at Hunter High School, won a swimming state championship and elevated the boys team to sixth place overall.

“This is a win that I have wanted since I was a freshman,” Nunez-Ianza said. “It made me feel really happy.”

He finished first in the 6A 100 backstroke. His time was 51.87 seconds.

The 100 yard backstroke consists of four trips across the pool. Halfway through the race he had built nearly a 1-second lead. The second place finisher closed the gap just over .4 of a second, but he held on for the win.

“I go as fast as I can. Go all out from the beginning,” he said.

His dream almost did not happen. Two days before the event, he started to get sick. At times he had a fever and chills that he thought were going to derail his attempt.

Then moments before the final his expensive swimsuit broke. He had 10 seconds to fix it or change to a new one.

“I was just getting ready to race when it broke. My teammates helped me run off the pool deck, covered me up and helped me change suits to get back out there,” he said. “After it was over I told my dad that I could not feel my legs (which he said is normal with the backstroke.)”

Nunez-Ianza also placed third in the 50-yard freestyle.

Last year he finished second overall in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 backstroke.

His parents said “they were super emotional” watching their son accomplish his goal.

“My parents and family have always supported me.

They are always asking about my times and watching my meets. When I was done my dad asked if I gave it my all,” Nunez-Ianza said.

He started swimming when he was seven years old and living in Venezuela. His family was full of competitive swimmers and they loved to travel to the beach. He started to swim competitively on the school team in the first grade. They moved to Utah to be with family when he was 14 years old and he joined a club team here.

“Swimming can be expensive. I tell my friends only to join the team if they really like swimming,” Nunez-Ianza said.

He is exploring opportunities to swim competitively after high school. There could be opportunities at Texas A&M or the University of Utah.

“My Hunter coaches have been very supportive. They are great people and really love the sport,” he said.

Nunez-Ianza has three older sisters, one attended Hunter High school also. The head swim coach at Hunter is Ray Huff.

His favorite swimming strokes are the free and backstroke. He has never learned the breaststroke.

“Backstroke is my favorite. Training taught me how to stay on course and it has become something I don’t even think about. It feels natural to me. I hate the breaststroke. My sister tried to teach me, but I did not like it,” he said.

High school swim season ended in February and the long course club season has started. He plans to continue to improve and practice to get better. l

Comcast invests in Tech-Moms, a program that encourages women to move into tech

omcast Corporation is investing in women. The global media and technology company is the Title Sponsor for the Tech-Moms technical training program where Comcast will provide $42,000 in cash and support in 2022, in addition to providing $15,000 in support last year.

Tech-Moms is a nonprofit organization that helps women move into, or return to, technology careers. Students in the program are given opportunities to build skills and knowledge to transition to a profitable tech position.

“I just started my second week of training with a tech company in Springville, [Utah],” said Tech-Moms graduate, Janice Knudsen. “It pays more and has benefits that my old job did not. There are many opportunities for advancement since this company hires first from within.”

More than 200 women have gone through the TechMom program, which partners with five higher-ed institutions, and 80 women are currently participating in the program. Additionally, 300+ applications are waiting for a spot to open.

Students are introduced to a variety of technical careers and given a strong support network as they move forward. As the women transition into the tech industry, they discover hidden abilities that help them build confidence in this ever-growing field.

“After graduating from Tech-Moms, I have had the confidence to apply for new jobs,” said Rosa Griffin.

“Next week, I am going back to college, and I applied for a new job that I dared to apply for, even when I didn’t

meet the college requirement. Two days later they offered me the job. The only condition was that I would go back to school and start working towards my degree. My salary has had a great increase too! I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to be part of Tech-Moms.”

“The value of the contributions Utah women make is incredible,” said Deneiva Knight, Director of External Affairs at Comcast. “That's one reason we are partnering with Tech-Moms. We want to help provide women the opportunity to build the skills, knowledge, and professional network they need to transition into or re-enter a career in tech.”

“We want to bring back the Hunter football grit, toughness and attitude. We have been missing that. I am not sure if it is a generational thing or what. That could be the key to our success. We want to play hard-nosed and in-your-face Hunter football, that is the plan,” Moleni said.

The team has been through a lot in the past few months. The tragic shooting deaths of Paul Tahi and Tivani Lopati affected the players.

“It has been tragic, but it has helped us come together. I think we are a young and talented team and the success we see this season will be based on the buy-in during the off season,” Moleni said. “I look forward to a great season. We can do big things.” l

ne of Hunter’s own has returned to coach his alma mater.

“I am from Hunter,” new Wolverines head football coach Harold Moleni said.

“I feel like there is a lot of pressure and weight on my shoulders. The people I am working with are my peers and people I grew up with. They are people that I have known.”

Moleni graduated from Hunter in 2008. He played basketball, football and rugby for the Wolverines and received several awards in his time at the school.

After a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he accepted an offer to play football at the University of Hawaii. In his senior season for the Rainbows he caught three passes and one touchdown. The highlight was an 18-yard grab in a game against Ohio State.

In college he was named to the Academic-All Mountain West team all four years.

He was the only player in Hunter history to start every game in three straight seasons. He also was the team's all-time receptions leader.

“I came back and started helping in the community right after I graduated from college,” Moleni said.

He spent time as the Hunter Junior High basketball coach, coached the Hunter boys basketball team for three seasons and was an assistant on the football staff for six years.

As the boys basketball coach he piloted them to 29 victories in three years.

Moleni was named the school’s head coach in February after Tarell Richards stepped down in December.

“We are a little behind. I was hired at the end of the basketball season, so we have three months to make up for. We were in limbo there for a while. Right now we are going six days a week with lifting, speed and agility. We need to use every second we can to catch up,” Moleni said.

The offensive and defensive setup could change.

“It will be based on the personnel and coaching staff as to what type of schemes we run,” he said.

Players and parents have been receptive.

“I think the players were nervous.

They know what kind of coach I am. They know that I am very strict and hard-nosed.

We started two weeks ago and we have had 70 to 80 kids every single morning.

The buy-in from the community has been great, and I think it will just get better and better,” Moleni said.

Hunter finished fourth in Region 2 last season and had a 3-7 record. They lost in the first round of the state playoffs to Layton 24-10.

Supporting small businesses is good for the economy

recently visited Weller Book Works in Salt Lake City.

The 93-year-old independent bookstore is among the treasured small businesses in Utah that give our neighborhoods their distinctive flavor and create a feeling of community.

Small businesses like Weller Book Works not only have an important place in our hearts, but they also play a vital role in our economy. In Utah, 99% of companies are considered small businesses and they employ 45% of state’s workforce.

Nationally, small businesses have accounted for two-thirds of net new job creation since 2000, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. They also keep money close to home. If you spend $100 at a local small business, roughly $67 stays in your community.

Small businesses have been a key driver of Utah’s economic rebound from the pandemic, though they still face enormous challenges. With inflation now at a 40-year high, one in four small business owners report that inflation is their biggest concern, according

to the March NFIB Small Business Optimism Index. Much of this inflation is caused by struggles in the supply chain, and 92% of small businesses say they have been impacted by supply chain disruptions. Small businesses also continue to grapple with labor shortages.

Almost half of business owners could not fill job openings, the NFIB survey found.

Given these pressures, it’s not surprising that 63% of Utahns have an unfavorable outlook on business conditions nationally over the next 12 months, as measured by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute’s Utah Consumer Sentiment Survey. The survey found less pessimism toward business conditions in the Beehive State, where only 36% of Utahns have an unfavorable outlook.

There may be some relief ahead for small businesses. The Federal Reserve is taking aggressive action to control price increases. The Fed hiked the key short-term interest by a quarter point in March, marking its first rate increase in more than three years. Up to six additional rate hikes are expected this year, which could cause interest rates to increase by as much as two percent. Their hope is to deflate some of the bubbles that have formed because the overheating economy.

Another positive sign for small businesses is Utah’s strong job market. All of Utah’s

Utah’s annual total employment has increased by 4.2 %, adding 66,000 jobs over the past year.

However, the Russian war with Ukraine is adding more uncertainty to the economy, just as it is turning the corner on the COVID pandemic. The war has pushed already high oil prices to new multi-year highs. The war is also disrupting the supply of wheat, which

will pressure food prices, and nickel, which is an essential ingredient in stainless steel and a component in lithium-iron batteries. This will add yet another element of uncertainty to the small business recovery.

In the meantime, the best way to help ensure the survival of our favorite neighborhood small businesses is to support them as much as possible.

In a recent email, following others with non-negotiable expectations, no reliable research, and no reflection on community impact, the writer accuses lawmakers of being “part of the wrecking crew brought in to bring down this great nation” – pretty harsh judgement with no thought toward legislators’ care and consideration.

It’s true that each of the 104 legislators brings an individual view to the job, but we all pledge to act in the best interest of all the people of Utah. Thank you for recognizing how meaningful that is to us as we note the range of circumstances and aspirations across the state.

unior high and middle school students compete in big games and they can mean the world to even the best athlete.

“The way junior high sports work depends on the coach,” Bennion Junior High wrestling coach Mason James said. “It is a way to allow kids to play different sports and even decide if they like it.”

James has coached wrestling in the Granite School District for 12 years. He started helping the junior high athletes when he was still in high school. Ash Porter, a social studies teacher at Bennion, asked him to help out when he was still in high school.

“I think they like coach James more than they do me,” Porter said.

Porter coached James when he was a student at Wasatch Junior High School.

“I love coach Ash and coach James,” seventh-grade wrestler Joaquin Ruiz said.

“They make it loads of fun.”

“We have fun with this and the students,” James said. “We have such a variety of abilities on the team.”

A majority of student athletes in the Granite School District program have never experienced wrestling. The program gives them an introduction to the sport.

“That is one of the problems. We have a few kids that have experience and are pretty good, but we also have newcomers and kids that are just learning. If they get paired up then one of them gets demolished. I am sure it is the same in basketball or any other game,” James said.

Playing sports is a great way to build a child's confidence and dedication. Regular exercise is important for children's health.

A recent study at the University of Kansas showed that students who participate in athletics have a 10% better GPA than those who don’t.

There are drawbacks to consider.

Playing sports at a younger age can put undue pressure for the student to succeed.

A sports program for junior high students needs to strike the right balance between competition and recreation.

Granite School District sponsors its junior high sports programs as learning opportunities for its students. They offer basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, wrestling and track and field.

“I think our program has been a success,” Granite School District Athletic Director Chris Shipman said. “They seem to enjoy it.”

Each sporting season begins with an intramural school competition. Every student that wishes to play can join the after-school program. As the two-week trial period ends the coaches select all-star teams to compete against other schools from the district.

The Jordan School District hosts an in-school intramural program at most of its schools. The availability of after-school programs has increased the past few years.

If your junior high student chooses to participate in athletics some things you could consider: emphasize academics, volunteer to help the team, let the coach do the coaching, give your child space, keep it positive and focus on building character. “It can develop skills and give them a chance to learn,” James said. “Interestingly enough we only had two wrestlers go on to wrestle in high school. I don’t think being good in junior high necessarily means they will be a superstar.”l

Female golfers will mix business and fun at the Copper Rock Championships in April

F

ormer Utah Senator Pat Jones understands not all business discussions happen in the office. Often, valuable deals are made on a golf course. When she realized many women aren’t usually involved in golf tournaments, she understood how often they are left out of important business decisions.

As the CEO of the Women’s Leadership Insititute, Jones organized a women’s golf clinic and tournament where they could build relationships, learn the basics of game and golf etiquette, participate in a scramble, and put themselves in a better position for inclusion.

“What I’ve learned, and I knew it intuitively, is that golf is the language of business,” Jones said. “That’s just how business has worked for so many years. It’s important for women to learn a sport that can help further their careers.”

The program was so successful that the WLI entered into an exclusive three-year charity partnership with the LPGA Epson Tour at the Copper Rock Golf Course near Hurricane, Utah.

The event is a week-long immersion for female leaders in Utah with the opportunity to play with top golfers and network with other professionals.

This year’s Copper Rock Championship event will run from April 18-23 and feature 220 pro female golfers. Last year’s event was a success, although Jones admitted she was a little intimidated playing with pro golfers. She even took a few lessons.

“I felt I had to play in the Pro-Am,” she said. “Since I was encouraging women, I felt I had to walk the talk. I can’t wait to go again this year. The pro golfers were so generous with their time and advice.”

The event starts on Monday, with the WLI Pro-Am, fol-

lowed by a Meet the Pros Night on Tuesday. Wednesday is the ElevateHER Challenge Luncheon with keynote speaker Sharlene Wells Hawkes. The luncheon will be a time to recognize companies that have accepted the ElevateHER Challenge.

Thursday through Saturday is the Copper Rock Championships where the women can cheer on their Pro-Am teammates as they vie for the title.

“ElevateHER is a corporate challenge with six actions companies can take based on best practices that will elevate women in business,” Jones said.

The program’s goal is to increase the number of women in leadership positions and the retention rate of female workers.

Companies are asked to increase the number of women who serve on community and corporate boards, establish a women’s leadership development program, close wage gaps, and encourage women to run for public office.

WLI started in 2015 to elevate female leaders in Utah.

With the WLI Career Development Series, companies can sponsor female leaders, investing in their future.

“It’s been hugely popular,” Jones said. “Companies who have accepted the challenge can send female leaders, mid to senior level. When women go back and teach their teams, it helps them be seen as the leader they are. It’s really magical.”

WLI also offers a Political Development Series that coaches women who want to run for office. The program started seven years ago and more than 300 women have completed the course. Several women currently serving as mayors in Utah went through the program.

One way to help your trees stay moist is with mulch, and spring is a perfect time to add mulch to your yard. Mulch improves soil moisture and prevents soil from drying out too quickly. Salt Lake County Council approves funding for new trails

I

f you’re like me, having a peaceful place to walk with your family, your dog, or even by yourself is a high priority. More trails for walking, running, and biking is something we hear over and over from county residents, so in February the Salt Lake County Council approved $10 million for the design and implementation of new trails throughout the valley!

In addition to the funds to build more trails, we also allocated $1 million for trail maintenance. Funds for these projects came from a designated fourth quarter choice transportation fund and were generated in 2019 through sales tax dollars specifically allocated for projects like this. Previous trail funding has come from a variety of sources including grants, UDOT, and collaboration with cities.

Salt Lake County already boasts some great trail options. The Jordan River Parkway is a north-south system of trails that parallel the Jordan River, connecting 45 miles through Salt Lake County. The trail further connects to neighboring counties, allowing for travel to Utah Lake and the Great Salt Lake.

Parley’s Trail is the first east-west trail linking the Bonneville Shoreline trail on the east to the Jordan River Parkway to the west. The trail connects a variety of neighborhoods in Salt Lake City, Millcreek, South

Salt Lake and West Valley City. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail is also continuing on the south end of the valley.

An option for those in the middle of the valley is using existing canal networks. The County has been able to obtain an executed trail agreement with some of the canal owners. This trail agreement allows Salt Lake County to use the canal maintenance road as public space for a trail. The canal company benefits from having their dirt maintenance road paved and the County provides a trail system that is separated from vehicle traffic.

If the canal owner is not interested in entering into a trail agreement the County is unable to use the space as a trail, but we don’t give up easily!

Future trail development is dictated by the countywide regional trails master plan.

The first master plan was completed in 1993.

plan is planned for 2023 and from that point forward the plan will be updated every 10 years.

Children’s Center Jewelry Luncheon helps support childhood mental health care

ental health issues don’t just affect adults and teens.

Infants, toddlers and young children can struggle with anxiety or depression for years before caregivers understand their behavior is a result of undiagnosed mental challenges.

The Children’s Center Utah has provided treatment for children and education for caregivers for nearly 60 years.

On Tuesday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Little America Hotel (500 S. Main St.) people are invited to the ninth annual TCCU Jewelry Luncheon to raise money for childhood mental wellness.

“It’s a really unique event. I don’t think there’s another one quite like it,” said Rebecca Dutson, CEO and president of The Children’s Center Utah. “This started in 2013 with community philanthropist Helen Cardon. She inherited jewelry from her mother and wondered how it might benefit the community, and the idea was born.”

People donate costume, antique, estate or fine jewelry to TCCU all year and the pieces are sold or auctioned at the luncheon. The event displays thousands of jewelry items and has raised more than $500,000 for early childhood mental health over the last eight years.

The money raised at the event helps underwrite the cost of providing mental health services to children. Specialists agree that identifying and treating childhood mental health issues early on prevents more difficult problems later in life.

“Proceeds from the Jewelry Luncheon provide comprehensive mental health care to all children and families, regardless of their ability to pay,” said TCCU Development Manager Mary Burchett. “Money raised at this event ensures no family is turned away from our evidence-based, trau-

Part of the luncheon is a celebration of the services provided to Utah’s children and the success stories, and the event usually sells out. The 2022 event will feature a unique drawing from O.C. Cardon Foundation will match donations at the luncheon, up to $25,000.

In January, TCCU started hosting free Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health webinars to offer education for any providers working with young children. By getting to the root of mental health concerns, a child’s caregivers can help them deal with challenges and teach them to advocate for themselves.

A

ppliances are like Christmas lights.

When one goes out, they all go out.

We’ve spent the last couple of years replacing appliances, and not easy things like toasters or the electric carving knife. We’re talking a dishwasher, a dryer, a refrigerator, and now our washing machine.

I hated to tell my husband the bad news, not because of the expense but because I had to brace myself for the laundry puns. He has loads of them. But I threw in the towel and waited for his list to unfold.

“Well, sheet,” he started. “I spilled laundry soap and now my hands are Tide. I’d better come clean ‘cause I’m in a lot of hot water. I’m all washed up. Oh, the irony!”

Once that was done, I had to decide the best way to clean our clothes until the new washer was delivered. Options were 1) go to a laundromat, 2) drive to Utah Lake where I could wash my clothes against a rock until developers make Utah Fantasy Island, or 3) say, “Alexa, do the laundry.”

The laundromat won. It’s been years since I’ve visited a laundromat. I bought a chai tea latte to sip, packed a book to read whilst waiting for clothes to dry, and a notebook to write pithy thoughts.

My first impression of the laundromat was the warmth from the dryers and the smell of fabric softener was so cozy. This will be joyous, I thought. Maybe I’ve found

my new community. Things went downhill quickly.

While inserting 19 quarters (!!) into the machine, I shoved clothes into the washer and noticed my tea had spilled all over the laundry basket. I grabbed my tea, closed the washer door, and sliced my finger open, leaving bloody fingerprints on the handle.

Trying not to think about what types of bacteria live on the handle of a laundromat washing machine, I considered leaving the blood there so the next person would wonder if a serial killer had washed his T-shirts. But I used a damp, tea-soaked towel to wipe it up and looked for a place to sit.

Making my way to a row of stiff, plastic chairs, I sat down to enjoy the lukewarm remains of my tea. I opened my book and looked around the room where people sat staring at cell phones. No one made eye contact.
