Softball season consistently amazing; team to play on new field SPORTS

With the end of the 2025 regular season in sight, the Lady Dragons improved their record to an impressive 20-2 as they added three more to the win column after defeating conference opponents Wendell and Declo on the road and Bonneville at home.

It was a 16-0 victory over the Trojans in Wendell on Friday, April 25. Commenting on their hitting, Head Coach Bri Adams shared, “It’s not that we weren’t connecting with the ballwe only had one strikeout the entire game. In addition to the tough pitching, Bostyn Combs forced the out, catching a fly ball in center field in the bottom of the second inning. Riglee Peterson forced the out to end the fifth inning, coming over from shortstop to tag the runner attempting to steal third base off the assist from catcher Logan Maroney.

The following day, the Lady Dragons took on the Declo Hornets for their second matchup of the season. In contrast to their earlier game, Malad got on the scoreboard early with 4 runs in the opening inning. Peterson pounded a hit over the fence on the second pitch of the game to take an immediate 1-0 lead.

Slowly accumulating runs in nearly every inning, the MHS team found themselves up after seven innings, 11-2. Nearing the end of the game and with two outs ahead of her, Maroney cleared the fence with her hit, bookending the game with a final home run.

Getting a game in Monday afternoon, the Lady Dragons claimed another win as they took down the 5A Bonneville Bees in a tight contest that was decided in the last inning of the game. Up to bat first, the Bees man-

Against the Bees, Riglee Peterson hit two home runs, tallying 7 for the 2025 season.

aged multiple base hits after a quick strikeout. But before their runners could make their way around the bases, the Lady Dragons threw another strikeout and caught the runner attempting to steal third to end the Bonneville offensive game.

Peterson started the hitting in a big way with another home run for the senior. But keeping the hits going was a challenge for the Malad throughout the game. “It has been a while since we had seen a really good pitcher like we saw tonight. It was a great experience at the plate for the girls,” shared Coach Adams.

Malad carried their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth when Peterson hit a second home run, punching in Tylee Venable, running bases after Sarah Toone had a base hit, to make it 3-0. While the marginal lead felt more sure than earlier, softball is a game that can change in a second, and that sure lead didn’t last long.

Bonneville’s offense made a push in the sixth inning, hitting two home runs with two RBIs to suddenly take the lead. Even with a change of pitcher to give them a different look from behind the plate, the Bees were suddenly in control of the game.

Moving to the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Dragons tallied three strikeouts in four plate appearances bringing the game to its final inning. The plan was simple for Malad- hold Bonneville from scoring in the top of the inning, and stack up two runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Easier said than done, unless you watched the final inning play out.

Peterson opened the inning with three consecutive strike pitchers to force the first out. The second Bee batter connected with the ball on a 2-1 count, hitting it towards Peterson who quickly scooped up the ball to throw to Venable on first for the second out. Peterson finished the inning with a final strikeout, throwing 9 strikes and 1 ball, almost effortlessly.

Moving to the bottom of the inning, senior Teagan Daniels was up to bat, setting the tone for the lineup behind her. With 1 strike and 1 ball, Daniels turned to her coach to take in a little strategic play for a base hit. Just as the pitcher went to throw the ball, Daniels put the bat up to bunt. But then as the pitch came her way, she pulled back the fake out, and slapped the ball, per-

fectly placing it between the infielders to get herself on base.

With coaches, teammates, and fans cheering Daniels on after such a perfectly executed hit, there was a palpable momentum shift, a surge of energy in the Lady Dragons game. Brylee Oglesbee battled it out at the plate behind her, hitting another strategic bunt to send Daniels to second base and around to third, sliding in just ahead of the ball. As the Bees focused on Daniels making her way around, Oglesbee took advantage, speeding on to second base. Toone followed with another big single hit to center field, batting in Daniels to tie the score, 4-4.

Back to the top of the lineup with Peterson to bat, Bonneville intentionally walked the hitter, accepting her on base rather than risking a third big hit by the slugger. With the bases loaded and zero outs, slap hitter Hadley Summers settled in at the plate. Nicking the first pitch, Summers made full contact with the second to send a line drive past the third baseman into the left field, punching Oglesbee in for the game winning run.

Coach Adams told her team after the game, “That was a great team win! We played great defense, players stepped up where we needed, and we played smart- everything we needed to win!”

Analyzing the game, various players played a crucial role to help the Lady Dragons claim the win. Gonzalez started in the pitcher’s circle for Malad, winning battle after battle at the plate, striking out 11 batters. To shake up the Bee’s batting, Peterson came in to pitch in the 6th inning, striking out an additional 5 batters. In addition to her pitching, Peterson had multiple key hits, along with Toone, Daniels, Oglesbee, and Summers. Anisityn Tovey, Oglesbee, and Peterson played tough defense, getting the out on multiple pop flies hit by Bonneville.

The Lady Dragons move into their final week of games to end the regular season, traveling to West Side on Tuesday, April 30 before hosting Soda Springs on Thursday, May 1. In addition to celebrating the outgoing seniors, Malad will begin the afternoon play with a special ceremony as they play for the first time on the new softball field across from Malad High School.

MHS undefeated in conference!

Taking their game on the road over the weekend, the Dragon baseball team tallied two wins after claiming the victory over conference opponents. Winning 8-3 over the Wendell Trojans and 11-2 against the Declo Hornets, Malad finished their conference matchups undefeated to lead out in the 3A District.

It took the first two innings for the Dragons to put runs on the scoreboard, going without a run until the top of the third inning. Fortunately their tough defense kept Wendell scoreless as well with their tough defense, despite the Trojans finding their way on base.

The first inning defense made three quick outs, beginning with Rydon Montgomery as he saw the Wendell runner attempting to steal second after the second unhit pitch, beating him to the base to give Cale Briggs the assist on the out. Brycen Howe at first base forced two outs to end the inning, making the play off of passes from Holden Higley and Brady Showell.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Trojans were up to bat with the bases loaded and the count full, hitting the ball wide of second base. Not satisfied with merely any out, Briggs hurled the ball to Montgomery behind the plate to get the runner out advancing home and stop Wendell run. With bases still full, Showell managed a strikeout before Easton Green caught the pop fly for the third and final out of the inning.

Green went to bat for Malad as they moved into the third inning, hitting a bunt to get on base. As the Wendell pitcher bobbled the catch, Green made his way around to third base on the error. Montgomery followed with another single base hit, punching Green in for the first Dragon score. Courtesy runner Brayden Arnout stepped in to run bases for Montgomery, completing his way back to home as Higley hit an infield single, putting the lead 2-0.

Malad’s defense continued to hold the Wendell scoring bay with two more outs at first and a caught pop fly to left field. Getting into a rhythm with their own offense, the Dragons put up two more runs in the third due not only to their hitting but their strategic base running as well. Ethan Horsley, in to run bases for pitcher Showell, took advantage of the catcher’s error to steal second. As they attempted to chase him down, he continued on to third base, rounding the plate to head for home, scoring before he could be called out.

After being walked on, Green advanced his way around the bases as the Trojan pitcher battled it at the plate with Montgomery. Sitting on third, Green ran across home as Montgomery hit a single line drive to right field for the second run of the inning, setting the score at 4-0.

Wendell managed their first run of the game in the fourth inning before collecting their third out. Un-

phased by the score, Malad continued to stack up runs by Green, Briggs, and Showell in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to go up 8-1. The Trojans added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth before both teams went scoreless in the final inning, ending the game 8-3.

Commenting on the game, Head Coach Jeff Snow said, “The Wendell game was an off outing for Brady Showell on the pitcher’s mound and it took us a minute to start hitting. We executed pretty well on the base paths and bunting was working. We got enough done to secure the win.”

Playing in Declo the following day for their second head to head of the season, Malad stepped up their game to win 11-2 in contrast to their previous 3-0 win earlier in the season. The Dragon hitters slowly began accumulating runs, beginning in the second inning. Up 5-2 at the top of the seventh inning, the MHS offense really got to work as they added 6 quick runs to cap off their score for the game.

“We hit well at Declo,” shared Coach Snow. He continued, “Kurt Ward, Brady Showell and a few others stepped up at the plate. We have had two of our best hitters out with injuries so to get these wins

and have the guys produce was huge for the team.”

On 3 at bats, Showell managed 3 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk while batting in 1. Ward tallied 1 run on 3 hits on 4 at bats with 3 RBIs.

Pitching for the Dragons, Howe allowed only 2 runs on 4 hits, walking 3 and striking out 12. Pleased with his pitcher, Coach Snow said, “Brycen Howe pitched really well again. In 2 games he has faced Declo he has 27 strikeouts…pretty dang good.

“Behind the plate Rydon Montgomery has done an amazing job filling in for our injured starter Carter Carey,” continued Coach Snow as he continued to highlight players that stepped up to bring home the wins for Malad.

Tuesday, April 29 the Dragons will have their final game of the regular season at home as they host the Marsh Valley Eagles. In their previous faceoff, Malad struggled to connect from behind the plate but the Dragons are ready to give them some trouble with their bats. Leading the 3A conference, the Dragons will host the district tournament beginning Thursday, May 1. If Malad wins the district tournament, they will host the regional tournament scheduled for the following weekend as well.

A busy time for track! 3 meets over the week

The MHS track and field team has been running at a fast pace, their last week packed with four days of competition. Participating in the Cardinal Invite in Soda Springs, the West Side Invitational Track Meet, and the two-day Tiger/Grizz Invitational, the team tallied nearly 200 total event appearances as a team.

Beginning their busy week of competition on Wednesday, April 23, the Dragon athletes faced off in a three team competition with Soda Springs and North Gem High School. The small meet was a great opportunity for the MHS athletes to lead out in the competition. Malad

tallied 39 Top 5 finishes at the meet, with few finishes outside the Top 10. The smaller competition also allowed the Dragon track athletes a chance to compete in events outside their usual few.

The following day, the MHS team contended in a second conference track meet hosted by West Side High School. Going up against teams from Pocatello, West Side, Aberdeen, Grace, Bear Lake, West Jefferson, Marsh Valley, and North Fremont, the Dragons tallied 38 new personal records, pushing themselves to compete at their very best level. Justin Toone landed a 3rd place finish in the high jump, jumping 5’ 6” before going out.

Kenadee Howe earned 2nd place in the 200m run with a personal best time of 28.34.

Friday and Saturday featured the Tiger/Grizz track meet held in Idaho Falls, a large competition with 37 teams in all participating. Running Freshman, JV, and Varsity events, the meet gave ample opportunities for the Malad athletes to aspire for their best performance.

In an impressive showing, Gabe Hooste won first place in the javelin, throwing a new personal record at 162’ 6”. Halie Palmer had two Top 10 finishes, taking 9th place in the 100m and 7th place in the 200m. Competing in the Freshman race, Brielle Bastian placed 2nd in

both the preliminary race and in the final, finishing the day with a new best time of 1:01.52. Aezlyn Summers took 3rd place in the Freshman 1600m race with a new personal record of 5:51.25.

The MHS track and field team continue to make significant progress both as a team and as individuals in their various meets and events. The Dragon track schedule has only one meet, held in Declo on May 1, before the District competitions are upon them. The District meet will be held on May 7-9 in Kimberly, Idaho at the Bulldog Stadium.

The Malad Dragons Baseball team leads the 3A District, and is undefeated in its conference.
