City of Taylorsville Newsletter 2600 West Taylorsville Boulevard • 801-963-5400
MAYOR'S MESSAGE Dear Friends and Neighbors, It is my pleasure to formally announce the creation of our Community Advisory Board, which will review matters of the Taylorsville Police Department and was anticipated early in the formation of TVPD. As city leaders, we have a great deal of confidence and trust in our police officers and staff, and know they Mayor Kristie S. Overson have and will continue to serve our residents with professionalism and dignity. We also know that it is important to have a police advisory board made up of community residents and stakeholders to ensure our department continues to operate at the highest level. Given the current national environment, public sentiment, and at times scrutiny regarding certain law enforcement activities, we desired to form this Community Advisory Board for several reasons. We know that each member of the board, as part of an independent team, will be able to offer insights and potential improvements within the department. Their engagement may lead to some of the following activities and recommendations: • Training and Educational Best Practices • Technology Enhancement • Improved Officer Wellness and Safety In additional to the above, this Board has the primary role of conducting independent reviews of three high-acuity activities among police officers: 1) matters related to the use of force, 2) vehicular pursuits, and 3) internal affairs investigations related to possible misconduct. Comprised of five community volunteers appointed by myself as Mayor, the Board serves to establish an open culture between residents and the police department, with the goal of ensuring community accountability and transparency. Applications to serve on this Board were accepted earlier in the year, and several interviews were conducted to inform my decision on who best to recommend. Everyone selected has a great background, set of experiences, and is well respected by other community members and peers. On April 27, all five members were introduced and unanimously approved by the City Council. We are grateful to all who came forward, expressing their desire to serve in this capacity. As stated by Council Chair Anna Barbieri, “Thank you to everyone. … It really makes the team complete, the police department complete, and we are honored you would join us.” At present, all five members are involved in rigorous training, respective to police policy, budget, protocols and procedures. Once completed, it is anticipated they will gather for their first formal meeting sometime in July. We look forward to our continued interactions and their engagement as they serve to represent the perspectives and expectations of our community. –Mayor Kristie S. Overson
