T
he tone of the June 3 South Salt Lake City Council meeting was set when Chairwoman Sharla Bynum read a poem by her son, Malcom Beverly, during the serious moment of reflection. “There are blackbirds singing in broad daylight/ Their ‘dirty wings’ were clipped before they could fly/ Pain tends to lead to anger, to resentment/ They feel the need to take action/ Action leads to pain, inevitably/ Pain leads to anger, to resentment/ It’s a bitter cycle of hatred and destruction/ While the puppet masters in the sky sit back and laugh /There are blackbirds singing in broad daylight/ The real blackbirds sing in peace/ They sing of revolution, of justice/ While the destruction of false prophets shepherds the rest of the world towards disgust/ It’s all a ploy, to make you blind to the real problems, the real enemies/ Don’t let anyone see for you, look with your own eyes/ And realize/ Until there is justice, there will not be peace.” At the meeting, others read statements expressing their feelings about the death of George Floyd, Black Lives Matter and the recent Salt Lake City riot.
Mayor’s statement
