SOUTH SALT LAKE’S CREATIVE ZONE IS BECOMING A GO-TO DESTINATION

n a chilly Saturday afternoon, the South Salt Lake Arts Council held the third annual Craftoberfest in the new Creative Industries Zone Oct. 9.

“The attendance exceeded our expectations,” said Lesly Allen, the executive arts director.

The SSL Arts Council started Craftoberfest to highlight the growing number of breweries and distilleries in South Salt Lake. But it became apparent that creative businesses needed to be showcased as well.

“Craftoberfest is fun because it is a local event, unlike any event SSL has done before,” Allen said. “It’s lowkey, anyone is welcome, and it’s free. People can come and discover many of the amazing creative businesses in SSL. They can see beautiful art, get to know the Creative Industries Zone better, meet new people and engage with others in Salt Lake County’s new up-and-coming neighborhood as in ‘you knew it was the cool place to be before everyone else knew it was.’”

The Arts Council held a silent auction for handpainted kegs by local artists.

“The city has worked for over a decade to foster a new downtown, emphasizing new housing and office space in a transit-oriented zone that was once an industrial area,” Sharen Hauri, director of Department of Neighbors, said. “However, while making its plans and going community and business outreach, it discovered a vibrant economy of small businesses, craftsman, and creative industries had started to move into many of the older warehouses and were giving the neighborhood a funky, fun character.”

The SSL Arts Council saw an opportunity to support the creative people who were making the area unique.

“Thus, the Creative Industries Zone was born,” Hauri said. “The focus is a little different—on the people, goods, services and activities that make this a destination.”

The CIZ is built around South Salt Lake’s iconic water tower (195 W. Oakland Ave.) named Horton. The CIZ is generally from 2100 South to Mill Creek (3000 South) and between State Street and the Central Point TRAX station mostly along West Temple. In addition, The Zone, as CIZ is often referred to, includes the growing downtown area.

“The downtown construction is bringing more people to live and work in this neighborhood and enjoy everything The Zone has to offer,” Hauri said.

“Our city is building a culture of creativity,” Mayor Cherie Wood said. “There are so many businesses already thriving in and around our downtown and water tower. We are bringing them together to help us create a reputation for creative industries and to help us better understand how we can support artists and creatives in

The Zone is home to 35 murals painted during the spring’s annual mural fest.

In addition, there are three distilleries and four breweries. There are 50-plus creative businesses in the CIZ. “One of the main goals for the Arts Council is to support local art and artists (which includes anyone doing anything creative) and engage our community with and through interactions with these artists and businesses,” Allen said. “The Zone is a way to unite our creative community and create/produce events and projects that do all of this. In addition, we wanted to identify and brand the area so locals and visitors would be able to identify the area, enjoy all it has to offer, and provide marketing, networking, and event/program support to the creative businesses in the CIZ.” The Arts Council has “also heard a lot about what would make it better—everything from public art to park space and a skate park and housing and studio space that served artists.”

“The city has plans to continue updating zoning to make it possible for more restaurants, shops, and nightlife spots to locate here,” Hauri said.

The city is installing new public art as street sign toppers. In addition, a new logo is in use, and an app is available for both iOS and Android called Creative Industries Zone.

“We hope the development of both the Downtown and the CIZ build on each other to create one of the most lively, innovative, and connected neighborhoods in the valley,” Hauri said. “We think we are

Welcome Center’s after-school program provides safe place for kids to learn, play

T

he Hser Ner Moo Community Center and Welcome Center located at the Columbus Center, 2531 S. 400 East, was the first Promise SSL after-school program.

“Our daily average attendance is 15 between the three groups,” Chelsea Francom, center coordinator, said.

The students are in three groups: early elementary (K-second grade), elementary (third through fifth grade), and teens (sixth through eighth grade).

Francom mentioned there is room for more students. Most of the students are from the neighborhood or Woodrow Wilson Elementary. These students are dropped off at a nearby bus stop. Staff from Hser Ner Moo meet them so that students are never on their own.

Daily routine

“Our focus is to keep the kids safe,” Francom said. “Here, they can hang out, get help and make new friends.”

Some students start to arrive a little after 3 p.m., but the majority come around 3:30 p.m.

From 3:30 to 4 p.m., the students are served a hot meal provided by the Utah Food Bank.

Between 4 and 5 p.m., it is the academic hour. Staff is available to help with homework.

In addition, student mentors are available from the Bennion Center at the University of Utah.

provides other academic-related activities. For the younger elementary students, it is reading time as the team reads books to them.

From 5 to around 5:50 p.m., it is activity time. The activities range from art to science experiments, such as catching flies with apple vinegar, to sports. The staff provides a calendar each month so that parents know what is happening.

They have 10 minutes to clean up, and parents or other designated individuals start picking them by 6 p.m. As part of the enrollment process, parents must establish who can pick up their child.

Holistic approach

Since Hser Ner Moo is a welcome center, the staff takes a holistic view of interacting with families. When needs are identified, the family engagement team is notified. Sometimes information like the nearest food pantry is provided.

It is common for parents to have their children ask for supplies. There is less of a language barrier for the students. Francom mentioned that sometimes you just ask.

“Typically, you can see the need before you ask,” Francom said.

apartment in 2008. The Hser Ner Moo family had working parents. Hser Ner Moo was home alone when the murder occurred.

This tragic event was the catalyst for creating after-school programs “Through the leadership of Mayor Cherie Wood and partnerships with the South Salt Lake Police Department, United Way of Salt Lake, Granite School District, and the city recreation department, they launched an after-school program and community center named Hser Ner Moo,” Kelli Meranda, direc-

Mental Health Crisis Care Center to be built in South Salt Lake

B

etween the Salt Lake County Jail and Men’s Homeless Resource Center, the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) and University of Utah Health broke ground for the first building of the Campus of Hope on 3300 South.

“The HMHI Campus of Hope will be a multiphase, satellite expansion of HMHI on a 9-acre lot at 3300 South and 1000 West,” according to the Mental Health Crisis Care Center website.

The location was chosen because it is in the central part of the valley and is reachable via public transportation.

“We are in the very early stages of developing the campus. We are gathering input from the community and are working with architects, consultants, and various stakeholders to create some concepts,” Dr. James Ashworth, executive vice-chair of HMHI, said.

One part is known. A Mental Health Crisis Care Center will be the first building built.

Mental Health Crisis Care Center

“The new Mental Health Crisis Care Center represents the commitment of the state of Utah, Salt Lake County, South Salt Lake, the University of Utah, and the donor community all working together for individuals facing a mental health crisis,” said Dr. Michael Good, the interim president of the University of Utah and CEO, U of U Health. “Together, we will develop a center where people experiencing a psychiatric emergency will be treated efficiently and with dignity.”

Charles Ellis, who has lived with bipolar disorder for more than 15 years, shared his story at the groundbreaking. In 2019, he was in a crisis and a friend called the police for help. Before they knew what happened, Ellis was surrounded “by officers with guns and tasers pointed at me.”

Ellis was handcuffed and taken to the hospital by ambulance. Medical staff determined he was not a threat to himself or others. Nevertheless, he left the hospital in the middle of the night with new significant medical expenses. “I was angry and frustrated.”

Ellis’s story is not uncommon. Unfortunately, the options are limited in Salt Lake Valley. The purpose of the Mental Health Crisis Care Center will provide a place for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis or substance use crisis.

“Individuals can walk in with a self-defined crisis, be referred by a provider in the community, or be transferred by police, fire, or emergency medical services,” according to the Center’s press release.

“This is going to be a welcoming place for any individual facing a mental health crisis. Like the current receiving center at

Huntsman Mental Health Institute in Research Park, it will serve everyone,” Ashworth said. “There will be a main entrance with a walk-in center for individuals and families to come and a separate entrance for emergency services/law enforcement to bring individuals. In addition to the shortterm stabilization center (receiving center), there will also be in-patient hospital rooms and multiple community resources to connect individuals to ongoing care.”

The Mental Health Crisis Care Center will provide a compassionate evaluation of patients and families in psychiatric distress.

The center will have the ability to intensively treat and stabilize 30 patients in a 23-hour stabilization center. The center will also have a 24-bed in-patient facility with individual rooms. Personalized care management and individual recovery plans will guide the process.

“To have a facility of this size with so few barriers to entry meets a need in our community that has gone unmet for too long,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “Too many people with mental illness have spent unnecessary time in jails or emergency rooms. The crisis care center will be a safe space where people will receive proper mental health care and treatment.”

peer specialists, and psychiatric technicians, will work with individuals at the crisis center. In addition, since the crisis

center is affiliated with the University of Utah School of Medicine, it will also be a place for teaching, learning, and research to

improve and transform mental health crisis care.

“The opening of the Mental Health Crisis Care Center allows us to continuously study, evolve, and improve crisis services,” said Mark Rapaport, M.D., CEO, Huntsman Mental Health Institute and chair, Department of Psychiatry. “This critical community resource will unify services for people and their families and be a space for healing. Its unique design will be a model for the future of mental health crisis care and an example for other communities to emulate.”

The Crisis Center will open in late 2023 or early 2024.

HMHI

The HMHI supplies a variety of services.

The HMHI Receiving Center is in Research Park, south of the university. It is a short-term (up to 23 hours) secure center.

While at the center, individuals will receive crisis management therapy, a psychiatric assessment, medication, and wellness recovery/discharge planning.

The HMHI operates the Utah Crisis Line. The Utah Crisis Line, in association with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, provides compassionate support during challenging times for anyone. Callers of any age with any mental health issue are encouraged to call. The number is 801587-3000 or 1-800-273-8255.

The Utah Crisis Line sends out a mobile crisis outreach team (MCOT). MCOT services are fast, free either face to face or virtual. Youth and adult MCOT teams are available 24/7/365 to offer consultation and support to individuals, families, schools, treatment providers, and first responders.

HMHI also runs the Utah Warm Line.

The difference between the Warm Line and Crisis Line is that the Warm Line is a listening ear for individuals who need someone to talk to. Specialized trained peer support individuals staff the Warm Line and are available 8 a.m. -11 p.m. seven days a week, 365 a year at no cost. The number is 801587-1055 or 833-SPEAKUT. A final service is the SafeUT Crisis Chat and Tip Line. This Utah services supplies real-time emotional support and crisis prevention 24/7/365 to students, parents and educators. Individuals can send a confidential tip from their smartphone or call 833-372-3388.

Cottonwood volleyball captures first win of season over rival Hillcrest

F

or a Cottonwood volleyball team that is used to starting over every year or every other year in the past few years, the Colts are beginning to put the pieces back together.

In the first set at rival Hillcrest on Oct. 5 the Colts used a methodical approach to take a decisive lead. In the second set though, the home team Hillcrest battled back to even the match at one game apiece.

But senior Ali Tripp’s thunderous ace that careened off of a Hillcrest player’s forearm so hard that it ricocheted up into the ceiling of the gym in the third set set the tone for the Colts first win of the season, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-12.

“I think the new region has been good for us. I do think we are pretty evenly matched with most the teams and it gives us some more confidence and hope to know that,” said Cottonwood head coach Astraya Lassig.

In this her first year as Cottonwood head coach, Lassig said that her primary aim with such a young team that lost 10 seniors was to work as hard as possible in practices and translate that work ethic into the matches that the Colts are playing in

this new region.

“In past regions we weren’t in a spot to be able to make a dent which has seemed to give us a mentality over the years of not being comfortable winning without realizing it,” Lassig said. “This region gives us a chance to change that mentality and hopefully sometime soon come out on top.”

Cottonwood [1-18, 1-9 Region 7] has just two games left in region play before pairings will be announced for the 5A state tournament.

What is interesting about the current RPI, or Ratings Percentage Index that seeds all the teams in Class 5A, is that if the tournament were to start tomorrow, the Colts at No. 33 would play No. 32 Hillcrest in the state tournament play-in game for the right to play against the No. 17 seed in the first round.

While the Colts didn’t want to look too far forward with two games still left to play in the season, a rubber match with their rivals is going to be one exciting possibility based on the first two games that the Colts and Hillcrest have played.l

Kids shop for clothes, school supplies thanks to foundation, companies

aturday mornings are often reserved for sleeping in, catching up on shows or even working. But for approximately 425 students attending school within the Granite School District, they spent one Saturday on a shopping spree provided by Discover Financial and the Granite Education Foundation.

Each child had $200 to spend on school clothes or supplies of their choosing. The students, who were chosen by social workers with the Granite School District, shopped at the West Valley Kohl’s, which closed their store to the general public for the morning and afternoon.

“Granite has more than 35,000 kids who live at or below poverty,” said Justin Anderson, chief marketing officer of the Granite Education Foundation. “We know we can’t do this for everybody, but we want to work with the social workers, with the principals, with the teachers, to really identify the kids who could really use a hand, who are in extreme circumstances.”

“As far as the services provided—the dental, the vision, the health screenings, the pillows that they’re getting out there—we’re getting all of these companies and sponsors who want to come and be involved, and really help however they can,” he said. “It’s so much fun to see.”

Howloween takes over at SSL Animal Shelter

n Oct. 16, the SSL Animal Services Shelter was decked out for Howloween.

“That’s why we did the open house today, to get people familiar with the shelter and all the services that we can provide for them,” Jenica Laws, the Animal Services supervisor South Salt Lake, said.

Not only was Howloween to introduce Animal Services, but it was also to have fun dressing up your pet. Wonder Woman (Sweetie) and Top Gun (Milo) came by for a visit. A Great Dane who came dressed as a hot dog supervised the event.

People also came by to see if they could give a forever home to a shelter animal.

Services

The SSL Animal Service is more than 40 years old. It started with a small truck and a row of kennels. The current location at 2274 S. 600 West was built in 1977. As needs grew, the building was expanded.

Currently, the shelter is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. However, residents can call to make an appointment on the weekend. There is also an officer on duty 24/7.

During the Howloween event, the shelter had 11 dogs and 38 cats, including kittens.

Currently, Animal Services provides these services: animal adoption; animal surrender (within SSL boundaries); animal licensing; low-cost microchips; live trap loans and removals for domestic pests (feral cats, skunks, raccoons); animal law enforcement; noise complaints; nuisance animal complaints; animal neglect/cruelty; pet care and health resources; low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination resources; educational presentations for schools and community groups; and pet euthanasia, disposal and cremation.

Even though the shelter has a crematorium, it is still considered a no-kill shelter because they do not kill animals housed at the shelter. Animals are typically housed for five to 10 days. If the animal isn’t collected or adopted, the shelter works with multiple rescue organizations like The Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society to find a forever home. The aim is never to put down an animal.

However, raccoons and skunks are a different story.

The law does not protect raccoons because they often carry rabies. In Utah, you do not need a trapping or hunting license to euthanize them. The Division of Natural Resources (DNR) has authorized SSL Animal Services to euthanize raccoons when they are received.

If a skunk is trapped, it might be euthanized or released depending on the type of skunk. If it is a striped skunk with a single thick stripe or two thinner stripes running across the back and tail (think of the cartoon character Pepé Le Pew), they are not protected by law.

anized or released if they are not showing any signs of rabies. If a spotted skunk, which has patches of white rather than a line, is trapped, it is protected. Animal Services releases them into the wild.

Cost of services

If a dog or cat is fixed and is microchipped, adoption costs are $8 for cats and $18 for dogs.

If the dog or cat is not neutered or sprayed, the cost goes up to $68 for cats and $100 for dogs, which pays for the surgery needed.

animal because of ill health, SSL Animal Services can help. The cost is $10 for residents and $100 for nonresidents. If the owner wants only their animal’s ashes returned, the price is $75.

However, if the owner allows their animal to be joined with another animal, the cost is $35. In this case, the owner gets most of their animal ashes back along with helping another animal to have a final resting place.

“When we have to use the crematorium, I realize that I am helping someone in a time of need,” Laws said.

Licensing

Animal licensing isn’t simply a revenue stream for the city. It is designed to protect the

community from sick dogs and cats and allows Animal Services to reunite stray animals.

According to the city code, all dogs and cats need to be licensed after turning six months or 10 days after acquiring an animal older than six months. Proof of vaccinations is required at the time of licensing. Ferrets need to be licensed as well.

A tag with the license number is given and should be worn by the animal. In the case of cats, owners can request the animal be microchipped rather than having a tag.

If an incident like a dog bite occurs, a license allows Animal Services to know the responsible party and the dog’s rabies status.

Community cats

A community cat, also known as a feral cat, is nobody’s cat and everyone’s cat. The cat roams around the neighborhood. People begin to leave food for the cat, which isn’t a problem until a raccoon comes. Raccoons eat the food.

“We recommend that people put out food for an hour at the same time each day,” Laws said, “and clean it up after an hour.”

Community cats soon learn when food is available.

“We have two community cats here at the shelter. They help keep the rodent problem down,” Laws said. “They also know that between four and five each day, there is food for them.” l

Hair studio owner wins appeal for new business

T

here is an adage that says, “You can’t fight city hall.” But, for Rachel Hoang, she did and she won.

At the Oct. 7 South Salt Lake Planning Commission meeting, Hoang, owner of Curly Hair Studio, appealed a variant request decision by the Community Development Director Alex White. In this case, the Planning Commission becomes judge and jury to determine the fate of the appeal.

Either party can appeal their decision to the district court. When asked if the city was going to appeal, Sean Lewis, deputy community development director, said, “South Salt Lake City will continue to review all available options, then make a decision based upon what is prudent and wise for the City and our business and residential stakeholders.”

Background

Curly Hair Studio has two locations outside the city and wanted to open a third studio in South Salt Lake City. They bought an old home at 242 E. 2100 South with the intent to remodel it. The houses and buildings facing north on 2100 South from State Street to 400 East are zoned for professional services, including hair salons.

When Curly Hair Studio submitted its plans to the Community Department, three

significant issues were found.

According to City Code 17.06.160, Barber Shop, Hair Salon, and Day Spa are required to have one parking stall for every 250 square feet of a building. The building at 242 E. 2100 South is 910 square feet. With rounding up, Curly Hair Studio needs four stalls.

The plan only has three in the back.

The same part of the code requires parking stalls to be 9-feet wide and 20-feet deep.

The plan has 9 feet in width, but the stalls are only 16-feet long. In addition, the one-way drive aisle needs to be 24-feet wide. This requirement is to accommodate fire apparatus.

In this case, the drive aisle ranges from 9-feet9 inches to 24-feet-2 inches. The smallest part of the drive aisle is because the design calls for an ADA ramp in front.

Curly Hair Studio requested three variances in a letter dated July 12 on the number of stalls, the length of the parking stall and the width of the drive aisle. The Community Development Director, the land use authority for variances, denied the request in a three-page letter dated Aug. 24.

Hoang agreed to lease five parking spots in a nearby parking lot to help meet the parking stall requirement.

Hoang appealed to the Planning Commission, the appellate authority for appeals of decisions by the Community Development Director. The request is called an appeal de novo, which means the Planning Commission looks at the appeal as a new application without regard to previous analysis or decision.

The Community Development Department is required to create a Statement of Facts for the Planning Commission.

According to state law (Code 17.12.010(B)), there are five criteria to grant a variance: 1. Literal enforcement of the Land Use Regulations would cause an unreasonable hardship for the applicant that is not necessary to carry out the general purpose of the Land Use Regulations.

2. There are special circumstances attached to the property that do not generally apply to the properties in the same district.

3. Granting the variance is essential to the enjoyment of a substantial property right possessed by other property in the same zoning district.

4. The variance will not substantially affect the general plan and will be contrary to the public interest.

5. The spirit of the land use ordinances is observed, and substantial justice is done.

attorney for Hoang.

Matkin explained that all the issues occur because the property is 41-feet wide, and the ordinance requires 44 feet. So the problem is 3 feet.

Matkin argued the hardship is because the property cannot be used for what it was purchased for.

“In fact, not only would she not be able to use it, but nobody would,” Matkin said.

“It’s literally impossible to have anyone use this property for the purpose it is zoned.”

Before voting, chairperson Laura Vernon asked each commissioner to voice their opinion if all five criteria were met. The Planning Commission voted 6-0 to approve the variance with the requirement of the additional parking stalls in the parking lot.

As the applicant left, Commissioner Mary Ann Southey said, “Welcome to South Salt Lake.” l

In a new region, Cottonwood girls tennis enjoys a stellar season

F

or years, the Cottonwood High School girls tennis team has struggled not only in region play, but also struggled to place any of its team members in the state tournament.

But, as Cottonwood athletic director Gregg Southwick pointed out, those days of struggling just to field a competitive team may have come to an end now that the Colts are in a new region.

“We’re having more success in tennis this year than we have in years,” said Southwick. “We’re seriously a dominant force in this new region.”

The Colts girls tennis team qualified for this year’s state tournament by finishing in the top three in their region, something that hasn’t happened in many, many years, added Southwick. When asked how many years it’s been since the Colts girls have been this dominant in their region, the athletic director said it was long before he, or head coach Tess Soracco were ever part of the program.

That year, in fact, was two: 2008 and 2010, when McKenzie Davis was Cottonwood’s two-time 5A state champion in No. 1 singles. Davis is Cottonwood’s only state champion in girls tennis. The Colts’ girls, matter of fact, have never won a state

team title.

The Colts gave their all at this year’s 5A state tournament though, qualifying multiple singles players and doubles teams for the first time in years. Their No. 1 singles player Kaiya Endo faced a tough test from the old region in Olympus’ Elizabeth Carter and fell in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3.

In second singles, the Colts’ Emie Linscott rode an unbeaten streak into the first round at state but also lost in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0 to another former region foe, Brighton and Ellie Spangler.

Kate Campbell qualified for the Colts in third singles and also lost in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2 to Reese Fowles of Maple Mountain.

On the doubles side, the Colts girls tennis squad did not qualify any players for the state 5A tournament.

In all, Southwick said he considered it the kind of season that the girls tennis team at Cottonwood can build on.

“Talking to the coach, she said she was very excited about the direction that the program was going in because we’re way more competitive in this region, and it shows in the results that we’re getting,” he said.

last time Cottonwood ever won a state team title in tennis was in 1998 when Gary Alverson coached the Colts boys to a 5A title. Then next came when the Colts boys captured the 4A crown in a three-way tie with East and rival Hillcrest in 1990, and the first time came all the way back in

1974.

The Colts boys tennis team will now get their turn to make history in the spring of 2022, and Southwick added that something else that he is excited about under their head coach, Scott McLaughlin. l

Firefighter Russ Groves’ community-minded outlook lives on through scholarship

he LionHeart Gift Foundation is accepting applications for the Russ Groves Memorial Firefighter Scholarship.

The scholarship is to help pay for the tuition for firefighter cadets who are going through the Firefighter Academy.

Utah Valley University is starting a Recruit Candidate Academy in early January. They are offering two classes: one Monday/Wednesday/Friday and the other Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday. Each class is from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The times are subject to change.

RG Memorial Scholarship The Russ Groves Memorial Scholarship was created to honor Russ Groves.

Groves served as the Fire Marshal in South Salt Lake. On the evening of Nov. 15, 2019, Groves unexpectedly died.

Groves was a founding member of the LionHeart Gift Foundation established in 2016 to give back to local first responders.

“He leaves a legacy. A legacy of community. As he always gave to his community,” Silva said. “The Russ Groves Scholarship through the LionHeart Gift Foundation is our way of keeping his legacy alive and giving back to our local fire community. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to fire cadets going through the fire academy.”

Besides Groves legacy, the RG Memorial Scholarship also highlights the importance of mental health among first responders.

“As any first responder, we want to make sure his legacy lives on and that we address the issues of PTSD and mental health with first responders,” Silva said.

“Russ lived life large, and as we know the ones who shine the brightest are the ones whose internal fire burns out the quickest.

We want to provide awareness and help educate people to reach out to others and get help. That is a message we will always share through his memory.”

Russ Groves Groves begin his career at the Salt County Fire Department. He served as a fire marshal in Midvale and Murray. He then retired. However, after a year of retirement, he joined the South Salt Lake Fire Department as the fire marshal in 2016.

He had friends across the valley.

“Russ was a man who gave his heart

and soul to his community and friends. He was a giver and would make sure if he just met you, he made you feel like lifetime friends. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need,” Silva said.

LionHeart Gift Foundation “The LionHeart Gift Foundation was created to show appreciation by giving back to those who put their lives on the line, protect and serve our communities and our country, in essence, a Lionheart,” states their website, LionHeartGift.org.

The notion for the Foundation occurred while the founders were visiting the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. As part of the memorial are statues of a lion and lioness symbolically protecting the names on the wall. The founders thought about the many family members these, and other individuals, left behind.

The Foundation used the LionHeart as a symbol of the unselfish giving of law enforcement members, the military, firefighters, 911 dispatchers and registered nurses.The Foundation partners with participating realtors. The LionHeart, a person receiving assistance, is eligible to receive a gift by way of commissions. The participating realtor gifts 20% to the LionHeart, a person in need, and 5% to the Foundation.

As the Foundation receives donations, LGF can help a LionHeart or a LionHeart family in need.

The Foundation also holds an annual Russ Groves Memorial Golf Tournament and supports the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention Utah chapter in honor of Russ Groves. l

Students support one another through Cottonwood’s new club ‘The Stampede’

C

ottonwood High junior Ethan Gerhart related a story that happened at his school.

Gerhart said when the school’s rookie robotics team qualified for the world competition in 2019, “everybody lined the halls and had a send-off for them, like everybody in the school gave them a round of applause and high-5s. I guess one of the students came up to the principal and said, ‘that’s the best thing anybody has ever done for the robotics club.’”

That, he said, was the inspiration behind the club that was formed this year, The Stampede.

“We want that to happen more,” Gerhart said. “We want to make everybody in the school feel included.”

The Stampede is a group of students who want to support one another, breaking down the groups or cliques in high school.

By building up one another, he said, it builds up the school.

Gerhart said, for example, The Stampede club will be joining the Art Council in painting backdrops for the school’s upcoming musical, “Annie.”

“We’re wanting to appreciate everyone and trying to get everybody as one school,” he said. “We’ll invite a bunch of students, have some pizza, paint the props and just show the art team that we appreciate them and we appreciate what they’re doing. At the same time, we’ll have a great time and support our drama students in the musical.”

The Stampede also has delivered Gatorade with personalized notes to tennis and cross country members, Skor candybars to the girls’ soccer team, and made an archway with golf clubs for the boys’ golf team as they headed to a tournament.

“We did that in front of their classes and school so everybody knew about these athletes and gave them a big round of applause,” he said. “Our goal is to get every club and make every club in the school and specifically, every student in the school feel appreciated.”

The buy-in also has several different clubs and teams who are supporting others whether it’s the girls’ soccer team supporting debate or the cross country team supporting the drama club.

Gerhart relates the story of the volleyball team being down two sets in their match when the football team came in after their team dinner.

“They went and cheered on the girls’ volleyball team because you know, high school, people really only go to the football games right, like most of the rest of sports are very underappreciated,” he said. “The football team, and some of The Stampede members, went to the volleyball game and we think, just by us being there and cheering them on and showing them appreciation, that helped.”

While the team still lost, by only two points, he said, “that was kind of some of the inspiration for The Stampede club.”

The club’s adviser, Joseph Brinton, said that he met with Principal Terri Roylance and student government adviser Tara Battista and some community members about wanting “a way of connecting our school with each other, with fellow students, also an opportunity of connecting the local community with the school.”

“We began to see that the school had divided segments within it and thought Cottonwood would be better served if we could find a way of helping them see the need to support each other in this larger community of being a Colt,” he said. “It’s been a really cool group that’s brought all these different segments of the school community together.”

While Brinton sees the benefits of belonging of a group, such as the athletes, the Latinos in Action, the art students and sticking to those particular groups “that really have tight-knit communities and really help their students there,” he asked, “what if we could find a way of tying each other together, supporting each other. If we can find a larger cause than just your niche or corner, it will build a more positive community.”

He said The Stampede bridges interaction between students with different interests and helps to build that community.

“It has become their passion, their student experience to be involved in all facets of the school community,” Brinton said. “I really like a lot of the ideas come from the students and I’ve been blown away at the feedback students give about how they’ve felt giving recognition to their peers. The students have a sense of ‘I’m doing something to help the school.’ It’s really positive for our club members too.”

Parents have contributed, such as making 16 yellow and black flags, that The Stampede takes to games and competitions “to build a positive culture and environment.”

Students can sign up to take a bus to attend away games and at home games, the club also has helped organize tailgates at football games to encourage students to attend, halftime competitions and other activities to increase student involvement.

“One of the pillars of the club is for The Stampede member to realize, ‘I can’t control whether the players for my school win or lose, but I can control is their experience both as a fan and as an athlete. I can make the students in my school feel like their peers

recognize and care and notice them. We appreciate the sacrifices they make not just individually, but for our community,’” he said. “If they know we care about them, then maybe they’re going to start showing care toward their peers in a different hallway or different interest.”

Brinton said that any student is welcome to belong to The Stampede and in the early weeks of school, already 70 students joined in. Eight leaders have emerged from that group; Gerhart is one.

Until this year, he hadn’t joined clubs or activities.

“Honestly, school is really boring without clubs and extracurricular activities,” Gerhart said. “I’m not really an athletic person so I wasn’t really interested in any extracurricular sports. So, I figured, hey, this is a good way to get involved and to get everybody involved. It’s kind of just a club for the school, not a club for one particular event.”

Already The Stampede is changing the atmosphere at Cottonwood, he said.

“We feel it just brings everybody closer together,” Gerhart said, adding that it makes forming friendships easier. “We want to make sure everybody views each other as equals and we’re all one school.” l

Cottonwood football finishes by winning three of four, equals last season’s record

A

bout 13 minutes out of one of the roughest starts that this Cottonwood football team has had in recent memory, the Colts picked up their hooves in the second quarter, galloping all the way to a 49-28 win Oct. 9 over visiting Hurricane. It was their third straight win on the season.

“When we do face a 2A or 3A school [like Hurricane] and the numbers are even, you can feel a different vibe,” said Cottonwood head coach Casey Miller.

The Colts couldn’t get out of their own way early on though. Down 7-0 after a Hurricane punt resulted in the Colts fumbling away the return, that turnover gave the visitors from Class 2A excellent field position in the first quarter.

On a rainy Friday evening in which the Cottonwood High cheerleaders were even wearing ponchos, the aptly named Hurricane quickly struck again after the punt return fumble by the Colts.

The Hurricane touchdown put the Colts in a 13-0 hole with 1:49 left to play in the first.

But, the Colts came out with a purpose on their third possession. Moments after a 7-yard keeper by junior quarterback Brock Simpson, he handed the ball off to sophomore Kaelen Gray who tore through the Hurricane defensive line and into open space

for a 75-yard touchdown run, narrowing the visitors’ advantage to 13-7.

The Colts then closed out the first quarter with a big defensive stop that was also aided by a 15-yard penalty on Hurricane for unsportsmanlike conduct.

It looked like the Colts were ready to again capitalize. But, another fumble on the punt return gave the visitors the ball right back and in great field position—something that frustrated Miller.

“In almost all of the games [we had turnovers],” lamented the Cottonwood head coach.

“We turned it over six to seven times in the [two] Northridge games and the Murray game [a win on Sept. 17]. In the first Jordan game [a 31-14 loss on Sept. 10], a turnover right after halftime turned the game in their favor.”

But it was the Colts defense that again stood up to the challenge that their special teams had given them when senior Parker Sirstins intercepted a Hurricane pass.

Simpson then fired a bullet into the arms of junior Nick Bean, the Colts top receiver in yardage on the year, for a first down, placing them deep into Hurricane territory. Two plays later. Simpson stepped back and hurled a 43yard touchdown pass to a sprinting junior Aden Cage, who took the ball in stride and ran the last five yards into the end zone. The extra

point was good and with about nine minutes to play in the first half the Colts had their first lead of the game, 14-13.

It was truly a tale of two quarters. The Colts defense again did its job on the next series and the offense went back to work. Despite a personal foul penalty the Colts scored their third touchdown in 10 minutes when Simpson found junior Jamal Lomax on a bullet screen, which the Colts running back took 43 yards to the house for a 21-13 lead with three minutes to play before halftime.

After another defensive stop the Colts marched right back down the field but missed a 45-yard field goal attempt. But with 19 seconds to play in the first half, the junior Nick Bean came up huge. He picked off an errant Hurricane pass and ran it back for a 57-yard interception return touchdown giving the Colts a 28-13 lead at the half.

“We were able to make two to three turnovers to get the upper hand,” said Miller of the Hurricane game. “And the Bean one was big for us.”

The Colts are the kind of team that Miller readily admits don’t have as many players on their roster as most schools, and so the 35 players on his roster were seen warming up on the sidelines, stretching out five minutes before the third quarter was to begin.

Having had a proper warmup the shorthanded Colts galloped right back down the field, scoring on a Simpson keeper to go up 3513 with 9:36 left in the third quarter. That was enough cushion for the Colts [4-6] to come away with the 49-28 win.

“Three in a row for the Colts! Two weeks in a row with a defensive TD,” added Miller after the game. “Chance to be five and five and not have losing season for first time in a decade next week.”

The Colts closed out their 2021 season looking for that first winning season in over a decade and their fourth win in a row, but they fell short on Oct. 15, losing at home to Northridge 41-7.

The visitors from up north scored all 41 points after Cottonwood came out surging with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Nick Bean, the Colts only points in the game after a 12-play drive. It was still a good season in Miller’s estimation.

“I feel it went well. It was a confidence builder for the program,” said Miller, whose Colts will enter the 2022 football season as an independent. “We had eight competitive games.”

Next year, he said, “We have an opportunity to get to .500 for the first time in a decade.” l

Comcast makes a $1 billion commitment to digital equity

Keller, senior vice president, Comcast Mountain West Region. “Leaders from the state, county and city are working together as we open more free WiFi Lift Zones, connect more families to the Internet at home, and increase speeds for businesses and families across the state.”

Comcast has pledged $1 billion to establish WiFi-connected safe spaces, or Lift Zones, in 35 community centers in Utah, and more than 1,000 zones across the country. These centers help students participate in online learning and will connect more than 8 million low-income people to the internet.

The COVID-19 crisis put low-income students at risk and Comcast’s Internet Essential Partnership Program is focused on creating digital equity, allowing students to continue their schooling, even when they can’t attend class. Just this year, Comcast estimates students across America will complete more than 25 million hours of remote learning lessons at the hundreds of Lift Zone locations that have already opened.

“We are delighted to work with such outstanding corporate partners, such as Comcast, as we connect more Utahns to the Internet,” said Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox. “Utah is regularly lauded for its innovative vision in numerous categories, and increasing our digital access helps everyone, including families, students and businesses.”

As Salt Lake County collaborates with Comcast, the country’s largest internet provider, programs in the area will benefit from the partnership.

Comcast recently gifted Neighborhood House with 300 computers and laptops to help clients in its programs, and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salt Lake was awarded a financial grant to support its mission to empower youth and guide them toward success.

“We are very grateful for this timely grant from Comcast,” said Amanda Ree Hughes, president and CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salt Lake. “Comcast is a 360-partner because they give more than just dollars for computers and programs. Their employees bring skills, experience and knowledge to create a whole solution in providing access and technology to help our kids succeed.”

Keller commends Utah for its “can-do attitude” and the willingness of state and county leaders to create long-lasting collaborations that will benefit students and impact Utah’s prosperity.

By Natalie Pinkney, At-Large In college, I learned the phrase Cura Personalis, a Jesuit term that means ‘care for the whole person.’ It demonstrates the respect we have for each person’s intellectual, physical, spiritual health and autonomy. When we approach other people with the value of caring for them, we see them as just that— a person. When we disagree, we take a moment not to be impulsive but to craft our argument to make the other person less reactive and more reflective. We don’t have to surrender our values and need to listen to a different perspective.

Changing our minds isn’t required to hear someone else’s needs, even if we question the validity of their needs.

In being reflective, this month is a big month for our city.

A mayor and three other council members will be voted in. The

results of this election will bring a lot of emotions for each of us. We disagree because of how much we care about South Salt Lake and our vision for our city.

Let’s become a culture that’s okay with our opinions not being accepted, whether by everyone or no one. The level of acceptance of our views and values doesn’t mean we are wrong, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t speak or that character is flawed. It simply means we disagree. Each of us has different values, and when we all lead with that value, we can come together. We become a community when even we disagree, we still care about the whole person.

Fall Leaf Bag Program

FREE Citywide Cleanup in November Available to residential garbage customers, the first two weeks in November, curbside pickup will be provided for approved items that are boxed, bundled or bagged.

Hazardous materials such as oil, batteries, paint, tires and other pollutants will not be collected.

Properly prepared items must be placed on the curb by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. The date for your pickup will be sent to your home in advance.

Each fall SSL supplies five (5) leaf bags to residents at no cost. Bags can be picked up at Public Works 195 W Oakland Ave (2475 South) in October.

Residents must show a valid ID with an SSL address.

Leaf bags will be picked up by Public Works curbside through the end of November.

The City also encourages South Salt Lake residents to compost leaves.

With Daylight Savings Time on November 7th and shorter daylight hours, now is a good time to switch out your front and back porch lights with LED light bulbs. Lighting is a key concept in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). The CPTED concept is that property design and effective use of the built environment can lead to the reduction of crime and improvement in the quality of life.

Lighting is one of the easiest ways to reduce or prevent criminal activity. As a theft deterrent, high-efficiency lights on a timer will reduce shadows and potential dark hiding places around your home.

Preparedness tips include: CHANGE SMOKE ALARM BATTERIES – When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms provide early warnings so people can get outside quickly. Check each alarm battery and test them monthly to make sure they are working. If a fire alarm starts chirping on its own, it is warning you to replace batteries immediately.

Be warm and safe – Cooler months are just around the corner, keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment like the furnace, fireplace, or space heater. THANKSGIVING PREP TIPS – On Thanksgiving Day, many families customarily spend the holiday inside their home or the home of a friend or family member with dinner being the highlight. Thanksgiving is the leading day for home fires involving cooking equipment by at least three times the average number per day. If you plan to use a deep-fryer to cook your turkey this year remember that turkey fryers must always be used outdoors and at a safe distance from buildings. Make sure the fryer is placed on a flat surface and never leave it unattended. Don’t overfill the fryer with oil and keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to extinguish a grease or oil fire.

Preparing Your Home for the Winter Months

At the corner of 2260 South and West Temple in South Salt Lake is an example of one of 15 new street sign ZONE toppers, designed by local metal artist, Fred Conlon from Sugarpost Metal, to call out the Creative Industries Zone, the hippest destination in the Salt Lake valley. Tis the season to get your home ready for the winter months. Whether your home is newer or is old enough to see all that a Utah winter can throw at it, doing these simple tasks now can save you money and frustration when problems strike.

• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Batteries in these devices should be changed every 6 months. Run a test to ensure that the detectors are in good working order.

Remember that the sensors in the detectors are only reliable for approximately 6-10 years, so it may be time to replace them.

• Service your heating and cooling systems. Replace your furnace filter. Many manufacturers recommend replacing the furnace filter either monthly or quarterly. If you have a central air conditioning unit or built-in swamp cooler, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for covering the outdoor unit to prevent leaves and critters from getting inside and damaging the unit. Your AC unit should either have a disconnect switch near the unit or if you have a dedicated breaker in your box for the AC switch it to the off position. Have a certified HVAC technician check your furnace before firing it up for the winter to ensure that things are heating properly before it turns cold outside.

• Clean the Gutters. This is always a chore, but the ramifications of not maintaining clean gutters and downspouts can be harmful to you and your house. Make certain that your gutters are free and clear of debris and leaves, and that water drains several feet away from your foundation. Gutter dams can cause leaks, damage your home, and leaky gutters can lead to ice on walkways and driveways if left unchecked. Ice-laden gutters that pull away from your home can be an expensive repair.

• Shut down the sprinklers. If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, save yourself from broken pipes and valves by turning off the water valve to the sprinklers and having the system drain. Professional landscapers can be hired to push compressed air through the sprinklers to ensure that the lines are clear of water. Now is also the time to ensure that you have drained excess gasoline from the lawnmower and that the snow blower is primed and ready to go.

• Prep the shovels. Now is the time to purchase a new shovel if needed, and also the time to buy your ice melt, sand, or non-clumping kitty litter to help you have traction and keep the driveway and walks clear. Remember that South Salt Lake requires snow to be removed from sidewalks the same day it falls or a reasonable time after the storm has ended.

• Change the direction of your ceiling fans. Most fans can spin in either direction and should spin clockwise to blow warmer air downward during the winter months and counter-clockwise during the summer months for cooling.

With Mill Creek running through this area, it is now stocked with several local pollinators, grasses, trees, and milkweed to attract all types of wildlife, and yes, Monarch butterflies!

Community Happenings A Little Rain Can’t Stop Craftoberfest South Salt Lake’s Craftoberfest is an annual event that celebrates the 40+ makers, artists, brewers and distillers who make up the Creative Industries Zone. While clouds were looming, we anticipated the worst but expected the best. We are so grateful to the SSL Art Council Director Lesly Allen, city staff, sponsors, volunteers, local art vendors, and ZONE businesses who persisted to make it fabulous.

With crowds in the thousands, the sunshine thankfully also showed up just in time. The Saturday afternoon event included live music from Jeff Crosby and the band Icarus Phoenix, delicious food from Food Trucks (Mas Gorditas and Portena) and Dail Crepes, drinks from Z Nectar and Bambu as well as super fun art activities for the kids from Promise SSL and Clever Octopus, and yes, craft beer and cocktails aplenty.

Promise ICMA Creates the Equity Officer Institute Promise South Salt Lake’s Bonnie Owens has been selected as one of 33 participants in The International City and County Management Association’s (ICMA) Equity Officer Institute which brings together chief equity officers and others working in local governments across the country who take on equity as part of their role. Members of this learning community will actively participate in ongoing conversations, share local challenges and successes, and promote the understanding and application of equity, inclusion, and justice in local government.

Cohort members offer expertise in current content areas and represent different regions, types of local government, career positions or job functions, and diversity of gender, race, and age.

Learning for Life

Learning for Life has been a vital partner at the afterschool program at Lincoln Elementary for years now and works with their youngest group—the kinder and first grade kiddos. They use curriculum to encourage high self-esteem, positive social interactions, and leadership skills in the youth.

They also help the kids begin exploring different careers and how the positive character skills they are learning relate to each career path. When they talked about first responders they brought in the SSL fire department so the kids could meet firefighters and see firsthand all the things they had talked about in their lessons. The kids were absolutely thrilled to see a fire engine and even test out spraying the hose.

On top of all the social-emotional learning, the program also supports the youths’ academic success by assisting in tutoring and working on math and reading skills with the group.

They have activities designed to help each kid gain skills in those areas regardless of where they are academically. The kids who are in the Learning for Life program truly love it and are excited each day to see what their group leaders have in store for them that day.

Promise South Salt Lake values the partnership with Learning for Life and is glad they have been able to return to support the program year after year.

ometimes, new ideas bring forth new growth. The great author Arthur C. Clarke once said, “The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.”

In the case of Cottonwood High School and its athletic program, the idea that the Utah High School Activities Association had to move the Colts into a brand new Region 7 was one that took some getting used to.

For starters, the Colts would be flung toward Vernal 300 miles east, then back west to Tooele County and south down Interstate 15 to Cedar Hills and Payson before their region season was all said and done. The only close opponent in proximity would be rival Hillcrest.

But athletic director Gregg Southwick said last year that he thought this new region would be a blessing for a Cottonwood athletics program that had been taking massive lumps in just about every major sport—aside from swimming and baseball—in their previous region because of a significantly reduced enrollment in sports programs at the school.

It turns out that Southwick’s forecast was correct; early returns show that the Colts are not only competitive in the major fall sports—golf, tennis and volleyball— they’re actually thriving in region play despite the long bus rides.

“The region placement is basically out of our control, but it’s been nothing but positives for our kids,” he said. “They’re doing things they’ve never done before; taking long bus rides to Vernal and Payson has built the camaraderie of the team. We’ve been able to eat together as a team in a restaurant in Vernal, and spend a lot of time together, and that’s something we wouldn’t have been able to do if we were placed in any other region.”

Southwick knows the parents have questions about playing in a region that is so spread out that it takes the Colts several hours to get to away games and then get back to Murray. But, he urges these parents to look at the big picture here, and see what life lessons the kids are learning from these unique experiences that are also having a great effect on their performances.

For example, the Colts boys golf team qualified for its first state tournament in many years after finishing second in region play. The girls tennis team under the direction of coach Tess Soracco also qualified several players for their state tournament, and the volleyball team has been more competitive in region play under its new coach than it has been in years, according to Southwick.

didn’t lose a match and we were in the top three in region,” added Southwick. “I think we’re doing better than Hillcrest for the first time in many years. There’s a lot of pluses and not too many minuses.”

Southwick said that after talking to the tennis and volleyball coaches that they’re “very excited” about being in a new region—one that is probably closer to the Colts level right now.

For the next two years, the athletic director added that the Colts will remain in this new region—“until the UHSAA decides where we’ll be going.”

For the Colts football team, Southwick added that he’s “very pleased” with the direction that head coach Casey Miller and

staff have the program in, as they have now completed their second year as an independent.

The Colts will continue as a football independent through the 2022 season after which time the UHSAA will determine whether or not Cottonwood, who finished the season at 4-5 and had a three-game winning streak, will remain without a class affiliation in football, or move back into a region.

“We know that we’ve still got work to do to build up the numbers in these programs…especially in football,” Southwick said. “So for right now, we are exactly where we want, and need, to be.” l

ne cool November morning, mom twisted my blonde hair into two braids and painted my face with orange and blue stripes.

I put on a fringed vest made from a paper grocery bag (decorated with stick figures and animals), donned my construction paper headband with its fake feathers and walked uphill (both ways) in the snow to school.

Along the way, I met up with friends dressed as Indians or outfitted in Pilgrim attire, with black, buckled hats or kitchen aprons. We were heading to our second-grade class party, unaware we were perpetuating a myth handed down for generations regarding the First Thanksgiving.

We’d been taught the feast was a celebration of friendship, that the Indians didn’t want their BFFs to starve during the winter.

We didn’t know Pilgrims were the guests that never leave, who end up stealing your bath towels and giving you smallpox.

We also didn’t know ancestors of the Wampanoag Nation hadn’t been invited to the feast, but responded when they heard Pilgrims firing guns, and thought the settlers were under attack. But the Pilgrims were just shooting their rifles into the air, celebrating a successful harvest, like ya do. Have Americans always been gun lunatics?

forms of sugar, because that was one of the main food groups in the ’70s. Our meal was nothing like the first Thanksgiving where lobster or eel was probably the main course, not turkey. I don’t know how they stuffed an eel, but I’m sure it wasn’t pretty.

The teacher told us to write down things we were grateful for. My list included my family, Nancy Drew mysteries and apple pie.

We also brought offerings for a food drive where some lucky family in the neighborhood received 25 cans of cranberry sauce, four boxes of Stove Top stuffing and a case of olives.

Maybe the Pilgrims also made gratitude lists, including finding a land so completely devoid of other humans that they could take whatever they wanted and build a country.

Did they think the people native to this continent were just visiting? Lost?

ed in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln was so tired of the Civil War, he just wanted a piece of pumpkin pie. Since then, in typical American style, the holiday evolved into a food orgy, consisting of overcooked turkey, mountains of mashed potatoes and nine different Jell-O salads. My food tracking app usually starts to smoke during dessert.

Although it’s true Pilgrims celebrated days of thanksgiving, those observations usually involved fasting and prayer, not gluttony.

These “thanksgivings” often occurred after a massacre of Native people. For instance, in 1637, Massachusetts Colony Governor John Winthrop called for a day of thanksgiving after hundreds of the Pequot tribe were massacred.

Not really something you celebrate with grandma’s homemade rolls and jam.

Along with your holiday celebration, maybe you can learn about the challenges still faced by Native Americans including poverty, domestic violence, healthcare and the continuation of harmful stereotypes.

As a 7-year-old, I didn’t know cultural prejudice or appropriation was a thing. I didn’t realize the Disneyfied version of the first Thanksgiving wasn’t accurate, with its cartoonish Pilgrims, smiling Natives and bouncy soundtrack. But now I do. When you gain wisdom, you get to make better choices.

n a chilly Saturday afternoon, the South Salt Lake Arts Council held the third annual Craftoberfest in the new Creative Industries Zone Oct. 9.

Craftoberfest Senior Way between West Temple and Main Street was closed for the event.

“The attendance exceeded our expectations,” said Lesly Allen, the executive arts director.

The SSL Arts Council started Craftoberfest to highlight the growing number of breweries and distilleries in South Salt Lake. But it became apparent that creative businesses needed to be showcased as well.

“Craftoberfest is fun because it is a local event, unlike any event SSL has done before,” Allen said. “It’s lowkey, anyone is welcome, and it’s free. People can come and discover many of the amazing creative businesses in SSL. They can see beautiful art, get to know the Creative Industries Zone better, meet new people and engage with others in Salt Lake County’s new up-and-coming neighborhood as in ‘you knew it was the cool place to be before everyone else knew it was.’”

The Arts Council held a silent auction for handpainted kegs by local artists.

“Craftoberfest was a great success this year—it’s always nice to see our neighbors turn out and support the Creative Industries Zone,” said Erik Ostling of Beehive Distilling.
