SLCC FASHION INSTITUTE CELEBRATES NEW LOCALE

I

n the competitive world of fashion, Salt Lake Community College’s Fashion Institute has provided affordable, topnotch curriculum for students interested in a fashion career.

For 23 years, Mojdeh Sakaki has managed the institute and expanded the program to include three Associate of Science degrees in fashion merchandising, fashion design and technical apparel design.

On Oct. 12, SLCC celebrated the grand opening of the new location of the Fashion Institute in the South City Campus (1575 S. State St.). It’s the only program in the state that offers education to help students develop in the field of fashion.

“The new location of the Fashion Institute has given it a new life,” Sakaki said. “It’s very dynamic and it needs to move with the changes that are happening in the world and in the fashion industry itself.”

The grand opening coincides with SLCC’s 75th anniversary celebration and the open house featured a display of 75 years of fashion, as well as creations by SLCC Fashion Institute alumni.

Check out the library during Family Literacy Month

T

here are many ways to develop a child’s love for reading.

Having books around the house, reading stories together and setting a good example as a reader are just a few. Another, is to be a regular visitor to the public library.

Since November is Family Literacy Month, and parents are encouraged to bring literacy opportunities into the home, it’s a good time to explore programs at the local library.

“If you don't have books in the home, it’s sending a message to children that this isn’t important, this isn’t part of our family culture,” said Nyssa Fleig, Salt Lake County Library program manager. “So when the whole family gets in on it, you create a culture of reading and literacy in the home.”

County library branches offer early learning programs.

With in-person or Zoom storytimes and singing activities, babies and toddlers are introduced to the five learning skills of playing, talking, reading, writing and singing. Fleig said incorporating an at-home, 10-minute bedtime story routine for small children will have a long-lasting effect on literacy.

For children learning to read, the library’s online programs, including Miss Humblebee’s Academy and World Book Early Learning, provide early reading education. Additionally, the Reading Buddies program brings in United Way volunteers to read with children using the Dyad reading method.

“Dyad reading should happen after a student has completed phonics instruction. It’s a method of practice that increases fluency and speed,” Fleig said. “So once they’ve got that proper phonics instruction, and we leave that expertise to the schools, then the library can step in and say, ‘OK, you’ve got the basics, now we can help you increase your confidence.’”

My First Books Club is available at several branches, for children beginning to read chapter books. Also, Read to a Dog is a popular event that has students reading out loud to a therapy dog. Although the program is only available at Holladay, Whitmore and Millcreek, the library hopes to expand it to other branches.

For middle readers, the Great Reads book club is open to youth ages 8-12. Participants read the book then meet as a group with an adult who leads a discussion and provides a craft that goes along with the book.

For teen and adult readers, the library provides programs based on reading ability and interest. Project Read, a local nonprofit, helps adults who are learning to read and a partnership with the English Skills Learning Center offers English classes

for those learning to speak and read the language.

“Our libraries represent our communities, so a lot of our westside libraries do have a Spanish speaker on staff,” she said.

“If we have a staff member who speaks another language, that will be represented on their name badge…We’re letting them know that we’re here and happy to support them.”

The library launched a new reading challenge for November. As part of Native American Heritage Month, libraries will have displays highlighting indigenous cultures to acknowledge the tribes that were here in the Salt Lake Valley. The reading challenge is to spend 300 minutes reading as an individual or

“We are big supporters of literacy at the library, it’s probably a core value,” Fleig said. “I think [illiteracy] is one of those things we struggle with invisibly, and that goes from children all the way to adults. There’s support here, no matter where the struggle is with reading. The other thing we like to say is the library is especially for people who don't like to read. It’s really simple. You just haven’t found the right book yet.” l

Comedy, tragedy, family are some show themes for Cottonwood’s theatre season

C

ottonwood High thespians will plunge into their season with the dynamic production of “The SpongeBob Musical” this fall.

Through a tidal wave of original songs by well-known recording artists, the student-actors will sing and dance and come together to save the fate of their undersea world after a volcano eruption.

“I love this play,” Cottonwood High theatre director Adam Wilkins said. “I always think ‘SpongeBob’ is a show that is better than it should be. The characters are quirky and different yet fun and relatable, and they make some great iconic moments. What makes the show unique is the fact the songs are from incredible artists like David Bowie, Aerosmith, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper. It’s an incredible rock score. It’s just so much fun.”

The family-friendly show will be performed at 7 p.m., Nov. 15 through Nov. 18 as well as at noon on Nov. 18 on the school stage, 5715 S. 1300 East. Tickets are $10 and are available at www.cwoodtheatre.com.

Wilkins said that not only does this give students a chance to explore more current musical theatre, but it appeals to everyone.

“It’s an iconic children’s animated television show, yet it appeals to adult fantasy. The actors are literally playing anthropomorphic sponges and amoebas and it’s so creative. My amazing costumer helps bring magic to it as the students are embodying these characters to life,” he said about the 80 actors on the stage who began rehearsals in late August.

Joining the actors will be a pit orchestra of about 55 student-musicians and 20 tech crew students.

“It’s very much a production that where all our students are engaged and are given the

opportunity to learn, but they’re having fun at the same time,” Wilkins said.

Some of the students may have taken part in the new Granite School District’s youth theatre program that Wilkins directed this past summer. It attracted about 75 junior high and high school students across the Salt Lake Valley to learn more theatrical skills as well as perform in a showcase.

“It was much larger than we expected for our first year. We were thrilled to provide this opportunity for the community. It was so successful and fun,” he said.

After “SpongeBob,” the student-actors will perform a Broadway Revue and melodrama in late January.

“Our students will have the opportunity to not only choose the show, but get that opportunity to direct it,” he said, adding that it will be in October when the material for the melodrama and Broadway Revue is chosen.

Following that, Wilkins will direct William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” in midMarch, 2024. Tickets will be $10.

“I am absolutely thrilled over the moon to be able to do ‘Romeo and Juliet’ for our community. I reread it this summer, and I realized how funny, how dramatic, how action-packed, how tragic it is. There’s a reason people study in high school. It’s one of, if not the most, wellknown Shakespearean shows, and therefore one of the most well-known plays ever written,” he said.

Wilkins’ students will compete in March 2024 at the 4A region competition with individual pieces as well as with their one-act ensemble piece, “Triangle.”

The show takes the audience back to the immigrant experience in Manhattan where

many immigrant girls were hired as seamstresses to sew dresses 14 hours per day.

When a cigarette was tossed into a bin of fabric scraps, flames engulfed the 500 workers in less than 30 minutes, ending with the death 146 people. Through eyewitness accounts of Ukrainian seamstresses to millionaire Fifth Avenue socialites as well as court transcripts from the manslaughter trial of the factory’s owners, the play explores the flaws in the working conditions and the fire, known as the “fire that changed America” at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on March 25, 1911.

“The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire is a historic landmark event that helped lead to workplace safety regulations. Even so, it’s tragic and terrible of these women who were locked in, trapped in a burning building. It’s very tragic, very heavy, but it’s incredible and truly marvel for our students to have this epic story that they’re going to undertake,” he said.

“This show deserves an audience, especially now as we have the UAW, the auto workers on strike right now, and we have the SAG-AFTRA Writers Guild union on strike so it’s interesting these workers are fighting injustice. It’s fortuitous that these types of conversations are happening in the community and for our students to learn about.”

“We’re in a new region so it’s a new challenge for us and it’s exciting. We have some schools that we’ve never interacted with on a competition basis so that’ll be fun. Cottonwood has an amazing tradition of placing top three in the region and top 10 in state every year since the schools been built (in 1970) so it’s our challenge to sustain that high level of excellence and tradition,” he said.

The Colts’ final show will be “The Addams Family.”

“It’s a great show and a good contrast between ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Triangle.’ It will be a good way to end the year with a quirky family and hilarity ensues. There’s great music, a fun script about family and finding your identity, classic characters and a comedic show that has a beautiful heart to it,” Wilkins said.

The show will be performed at 7 p.m., May 1-4, 2024 as well as a noon matinee on May 4 in the school’s Black Box Theater. Tickets are $10.

he Cottonwood boys golf team had an above-average season.

“We had a pretty good team this year,” said Cottonwood head coach Greg Southwick of his players.

There’s no question about that; the last time there was this much great news about the Colts boys golf team was back in the 1970s. In 1971, Joe Cornwall shot a 74 to win a state championship. Four years later in 1975, Mike Borich hit 73 over 18 holes of golf—and won himself a title.

That was the first year Class 4A existed.

And that was the last time Cottonwood won a state title in boys’ golf.

Nearly 50 years later and several added classifications later, the Colts have talent. That was proven this season when the Colts played very good golf for more than a month and won a silver medal in Region 10.

“There was a total team effort, but we had three boys at state that stood out,” Southwick said.

At The Ridge Golf Course that begins at the back end of the Newspaper Agency

Corporation, meanders along West Valley City’s Westridge Boulevard and spits you out at Rocky Mountain Power, Cottonwood seemed a bit, well, disconnected. And perhaps they had exhausted their power sources at the 4A state championships.

The Colts finished eighth overall as a team, still good considering 16 schools competed at this year’s 4A state golf showdown. Three of those schools were in Cottonwood’s region and didn’t make the cut.

Individually, the Colts highest finisher was sophomore Tommy Yates, who tied for 26th. He shot two 77s over the two rounds for Cottonwood.

“Tommy did a good job and stayed consistent,” said Southwick of Yates who despite being a sophomore showed the kind of patience one needs to handle irate callers complaining about their power going out.

Other golfers to finish in the places for Cottonwood were seniors Jacek Budge [40th] and Hunter Vuong [42nd]. Sophomore Ayden Ryser was 52nd and seniors Adam Ball and Dmitro Vasilacpoulos, 66th and 68th. l

A legacy of dedication: SLCC names lab after longest-serving instructor

A

s a student at Utah Technical College at Salt Lake, now Salt Lake Community College, Steve Mitchell learned how to solder rather than weld a pinhole closed in sheet metal, a technique he learned from his automotive instructor, Neal Grover.

“I’d show technicians and they’d say, ‘nobody does that,’” he said. “That’s one of the many things I learned from Mr. Grover. It’s the most efficient and best way to do it. I’ve never seen anybody else do it that way in 35plus years. Now there’s a whole bunch of people who are using his knowledge in shops.”

Grover, at 84, is an adjunct professor at SLCC. He has been a student, instructor and administrator with the college for 65 years, just one decade shy of the school’s existence.

This fall, the auto collision repair and refinishing training lab was named after him.

“Having Mr. Grover’s name on this lab shows the value of respect that he has earned,” Mitchell said. “I was there four years ago and went down to the school. Neal grabbed a torch and in minutes, he was welding. At 80 years old, he could do techniques that 30-year-olds couldn’t match his skill level.”

Grover’s relationship with the school began when he returned from active duty in the infantry.

“I didn’t have a car, didn’t have any money, didn’t have any education so I enrolled at

Salt Lake Area Vocational School at 431 South 600 East,” he said. “It’s reputation was, ‘If you want to see the bad asses, go to the vocational school.’ But I wanted to learn how to build and customize a car. I was awarded a scholarship my second year. It was $86 for a full ride.”

In 1960, Grover earned his certificate of accomplishment from the school then known as Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute. He served on its automotive advisory committee and became an instructor for a salary of $575 per month.

“That included us cleaning the bathroom and the shop,” he remembered.

Grover taught classes for the Manpower Development and Training Act of 1962, a program “that Kennedy put together to train the guys coming back from the service in the trades and the hardcore unemployable. There were some rough guys in that class,” he said.

Technology and equipment were rudimentary.

“We put the car on jigs and held it in position while it was welded,” he said. “We had little technology to work with and the tools we used were handmade and primitive.”

He also ran his own shop, Grover’s Body and Fender Repair.

“We’d paint the whole car for 80 bucks.

That’s when gasoline was 28 cents per gallon,” he said.

Grover used his skills to build and customize his own cars, including a 1962 metallic midnight blue Corvette, which he sold for $1,800 and gave his dad the money. Even today, Grover has his shop set up in his garage in Holladay.

Mitchell remembered, “His command of

the tools he has is unmatched. When you see somebody like Mr. Grover know what he’s doing, it doesn’t look the same as others who are just getting by.”

Grover taught the Vocational Improvement Program at the downtown campus. In 1967, the school, then known as Utah Tech, moved most programs to its current Redwood Campus. Grover followed one year later when the automotive trades center building was completed.

“I saw that building go up in 1968, and I saw it go down,” Grover said, in reference to the automotive building being torn down in 2010 after the program moved to the Larry H. Miller Campus in Sandy in 2001.

After the completion of Redwood automotive building, the school added an associate degree in applied science in auto collision repair and refinishing. Grover was the first to receive that distinction.

In the 1970s, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in trade and industrial education from Utah State University.

Grover continued to teach collision repair, sharing his students with the paint instructor, Chuck Spainhower.

“I enjoyed working with Neal and Chuck,” said Larry Barlage, who was hired by Grover in 1983 and worked beside him for decades. “Many times, you’d see Neal bring his students into the paint shop to see something special before and after it was painted. Chuck would do the same thing with the paint students showing them something in Neal’s class.

They worked together as a team.”

The bond of the instructors wasn’t lost on their students.

“I think of them as the dynamic duo.

They did everything very well together,” Mitchell said.

“Neal has been my mentor and friend since early ’80s and Chuck was equally an amazing person,” he said. “They were like Tom and Jerry. There was a connection between them; they melded together.”

The two instructors educated about 150 Japanese students every summer in the 1990s.

“They came here wanting to learn automotive skills, so we’d find host homes around the college for them to stay and I taught welding and Chuck taught them paint,” Grover said about his late colleague and friend.

Mitchell said the program was amazing.

“It seems unbelievable that this school in Japan sent their students to a specific university, a two-year college in Utah for training and then, Mr. Grover and Mr. Spainhower trained

the students through an interpreter. It was remarkable,” he said.

Grover taught ICAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) for decades.

Amongst his numerous career awards, he received the ICAR Founders Award for the region and was inducted into its hall of fame.

“Back in 1979, we had the Detroit Iron.

Our cars were selling, but there was no technology going into. The Europeans and Japanese had their cars, and they had a repair manual to follow. We had nothing. So, we got together and came up with ICAR. The idea was to train people on the curriculum that was necessary to repair a car. Now, it’s specific to the car,” he said, adding that there are more than 100 online ICAR classes. “Back then, we’d have all the parts, there would be a blueprint for it, and everything could be very specific to the way the car was designed.”

Hoffman also instructed ICAR. “Neal was an ICAR instructor at the concept of it and he got me into teaching. It’s been amazing to see ICAR evolve. Early on, he’d set up a slide carousel that would ding when it was time to advance the slides. One of his famous sayings before ICAR classes, was, ‘It’s time for The Gong Show.’ He has a wry sense of humor. He comes up with things off the cuff; his timing is impeccable.”

Barlage learned from Grover that humor is necessary in teaching.

“Neal can make a bad situation better and laugh along the way. I changed my teaching

to model that after him. When I get a laugh or two in the beginning of the class, everything goes smoother,” he said.

Mitchell said Grover interjected humor in class, but he also could take a joke.

“My first year, I went to his house with Oreo cookies and put them all over his car.

When he came into class, I joked about him being late. He was eating an Oreo cookie, saying he went out to breakfast. For his 80th birthday, we went to his house and did the same thing. He still laughed at it,” he said, adding Grover always wore his white shop coat at school. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he wears his coat around his house.”

While instructing full-time, Grover guided students to their potential, helping many become state and national Skills USA/VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) winners.

“It was more hands-on than it is now.

They don’t do stuff today like we did back then. You had to be a metal artist,” Grover said.

Hoffman, who placed second at state, joined Grover when SLCC student Joey Hatch won VICA nationals.

“That was one of the biggest experiences I’ve ever experienced. Joey was such a good learner and Neal put so much effort into teaching him to do things properly,” he said.

Grover said that was his goal.

“My biggest challenge is helping kids fulfill their potential, to give them everything they needed to be successful. I taught every kid like the kid was mine,” he said.

Barlage said Grover often worked individually with students.

“Neal would take one or two students if they were having trouble doing something and he’d work on the problem to get the students up to industry standards, just polishing the rough spots. He got everybody to do their best. If students would say, ‘Hey, we

messed up; What are we going to do?’ He’d go through a repair procedure with them and use it as a teaching experience so the whole class learned,” he said.

Hoffman remembers asking Grover for help.

“Neal always pushed you a little when you asked for help. He wouldn’t step in and take over the repair. He explained it and let you work it. If things started to go wrong, he’d say, ‘Get back to the basics.’ I used that through my whole career,” he said.

Grover said the students are his favorite part of teaching.

“I was with a bunch of kids, six hours every day for nine months. There’s an association there. If one kid is missing, that part of the recipe is gone. Everybody brought a piece of personality into class,” he said.

Mitchell came to the school from Chicago.

“Before I went back after my first year, the body and paint classes got together for a huge barbecue. I learned Mr. Grover could be strict on teaching and discipline, but there’s room to enjoy the day. He taught us to balance those two things. If it wasn’t him, I’m not sure that after the first year, I would have gone back. I made that connection with is imperative to being engaged. To this day, it’s 1,400 miles from Chicago at Salt Lake, but he’s still like a father,” he said.

It’s something Hoffman learned as well.

“Neal taught me the reward of being able to do what you like and being happy while making a good living and to enjoy it with others,” he said.

Grover said teaching “has been a great trip.”

“I taught all kinds of people and made all kinds of friends. I dearly love all those guys.

We’re family,” he said. “I wanted to be a body man; teaching wasn’t my goal. But, it sure worked out for me.” l

Thread of innovation: Cottonwood High’s sewing program shifts to Sports & Outdoor Design

ottonwood High’s sewing classes have a new focus.

“My sewing class curriculum changed to Sports & Outdoor Design so we are focusing on outdoor products,” teacher Zahaia Donner said.

With a growing industry in outdoor apparel and product design education, it’s becoming a trend to shift curriculum to that focus along with the desire to sustain secondary schools’ textiles and apparel curriculum.

“The Sports & Outdoor Design curriculum focuses more on product development. A few years ago, we went to USU (Utah State University’s) outdoor product design showcase and saw all the senior students’ final projects, so that may be the route we’re going toward,” she said. “Hopefully, this gets kids more inspired in product design. We’re wanting to take the kids on more field trips so they can see what options they have the college level and professionally.”

The curriculum change already is attracting new students. Donner said she’s seen an increase in male students.

“I did get a lot of boys that signed up for the class because it was called Sports & Outdoor Design. They were very surprised on the first day of school when I told them it centered around sewing, but I encouraged them to stay. The students definitely were more excited when I told them our new updated projects. I have gotten more buy-in with the class,” she said.

About 30 students in the Sports & Outdoor Design I class are starting with making joggers.

“They’re going to be learning some basics with those,

but with a few more skills. Then, we’re going to be making a duffel bag and a pullover sweatshirt,” she said, saying that those projects replace pajama pants, aprons and quillows.

“My second-level students will make an outdoors shirt, a more complex sports bag and another project working with specialty fabrics.”

Donner said that the curriculum change is districtwide and that together, the teachers are brainstorming ways to deliver and enhance the curriculum. They’re also creating an advisory board of local companies to help with the direction of the program as well as potentially serve as guest speakers or be able to give students’ tours of facilities and possibly, internships.

Donner said she has an “amazing TA who is helpful assisting students” in senior Sara Sandusky, who may work with one student altering a pattern while she helps others who are designing their own patterns.

Through this curriculum change, she said students are realizing that the course is more than traditional sewing.

“I want them to realize that sewing isn’t just something for grandmas,” Donner said. “They create lots of cool projects and skills that they’ll use for their life—and now we’re appealing to students who normally wouldn’t see us on class but are more creative and are interested in product design.”l Cottonwood High student Carley Stephens practices sewing skills in the Sports & Outdoor Design class. Every single person in civilization wears clothing and accessories and shoes, so it is an essential part of everyday life.”

Classes held in the new 8,000-squarefoot space include everything a student needs to know about the fashion industry.

Whether it’s pattern-making, sewing, visual presentation, sketching, draping, sales, management, manufacturing or merchandising, the Fashion Institute’s courses rival those of the big fashion schools in the country, at a more affordable cost.

SLCC President Deneece Huftalin attended the grand opening celebration at the South City Campus and expressed her appreciation to those who had a part in the evolution of the fashion program and the creation of the new location.

“We are optimistic about the future of the Fashion Institute because we know that this discipline is dynamic and is in constant reinvention,” Huftalin said. “Pos-

sibilities happen in this space, and it has a sustainable future. It is an exciting time to be in fashion.”

As the reputation of the program has grown, the SLCC Fashion Institute attracts students from across the country. It also allows Utah students to remain in the state to boost economic growth by becoming business owners or working in the fashion field.

In a new development, an articulation agreement with Utah State University will allow SLCC’s fashion students to transfer to USU to receive a bachelor’s degree in outdoor product design and development.

Sakaki said the skills learned in the fashion program can be used in a variety of industries and the education gives students a chance to work while building a portfolio to help them move toward a fashion career.

“In fashion, there’s huge competition.

It takes years of searching and working and experiencing and you need to offer something so different that you stand out,” Sakaki said. “While they’re pursuing their dream, they can have a job and they don't have to be dependent on their parents or the state or do menial jobs in order to support themselves.”

Cottonwood girls tennis had a good season despite tough new region play

ast year, Cottonwood’s girls tennis team surprised a lot of people on the way toward several region singles titles.

But in the new Region 10 where rival Hillcrest resides along with Park City and Jordan, life didn’t go as easy for the team, according to head coach Teisa Linscott.

“We had a great season,” Linscott said. “Not as good as last year but still did OK.” For Cottonwood, junior Emie [Amelia] Linscott carried a 5-2 record into the Region 10 championships, in first singles.

Linscott blasted her opposition from Stansbury in the first round, 6-1 and 6-0. That resounding victory automatically moved the junior into the finals, where she faced off against the same opponent she bested last year: Hillcrest junior Fabiana Gonzalez.

Gonzalez got the better of Linscott in this round, dropping the Cottonwood junior in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1. Linscott, who is the daughter of the Colts head coach, moved on to the 4A state

tournament as the No. 11 seed.

The Colts’ junior took on No. 22 seed Elise McPhie from Tooele and won 6-1, 6-1, in the first round of state.

In the round of 16, however, Linscott would meet up with a region foe in Park City’s Mia Jamrich and would lose, 6-3 and 6-2.

To give readers an idea of how stiff the competition was in Region 10, Hillcrest’s Gonzalez finished as a state finalist in first singles.

In second singles, the Colts trotted out sophomore Annie Woodward for the Region 10 Championships. She advanced to the finals and lost by a score of 6-3 and 6-1 to junior Sara Marchant of Murray.

At the 4A state tournament, Woodward was seeded No. 12 and defeated No. 21 Cassie Johansen of Tooele in the first round. The Cottonwood sophomore, who had a 5-2 record before her state tournament showdown, met Park City’s Madeline Limback the five-seed in the round of 16 and fell, 6-0 and 6-3.

Junior Bella [Isabella] Morris was

the next to take the court at the Region 10 championships, and advanced to round four where she won, 6-3 and 7-5 to advance as the 4A state tournament’s No. 15 seed.

Morris, who had a 4-1 record heading into state, defeated 18th-seeded Abby Boyd of Murray 6-0 and 6-1 in the tournament’s first round. She also fell at the round of 16, 6-0 and 6-2 to 2-seed Abby Davidson.

In doubles, the Colts featured seniors James Wilkinson and Kaitlyn Julian, who entered the Region 10 championships with a 2-5 record. They lost in the first round to a duo from Jordan, 6-0 and 6-2.

At the 4A state tournament, Cottonwood had two duos that competed: Wilkinson and Julian and sophomore Addison Allen and freshman Juliet Lewis. Both lost their first-round matches at state for Cottonwood, who did not place as a team at either the Region 10 championships or at state. l

Cottonwood girls soccer team’s ‘can-do’ attitude impresses coaching staff

Come rain or shine, the Cottonwood football team wanted to win one for the seniors

or Cottonwood girls soccer head coach Bryce Harvest, his first season in charge was good—even if he and his assistant brother Brylee Harvest had to keep in mind it’s only the beginning.

“As a coaching staff we had to remind ourselves that this program is basically a brandnew program,” Bryce Harvest said. “Yes, there was a team for the last two years, but we weren't even competitive.”

In every game this season, Cottonwood [314] stepped up and dealt with a tall task: join Region 10 filled with great programs like Park City and Murray and reunite past allegiances with schools such as Jordan, Tooele and Stansbury and, of course, crosstown rival Hillcrest.

“I was really pleased with the job the brothers did this season,” said Cottonwood Athletic Director Greg Southwick, who signed off on Bryce Harvest becoming the Colts’ new head girls soccer coach. “We’ve got a bright future ahead.”

Cottonwood finished its season with a tough 5-0 loss at Murray in the first round of the 4A state tournament, Oct. 7. But in Bryce Harvest’s eyes, these kids are already winning at a lot more than some final score.

Bryce Harvest said he couldn’t have been more pleased by his team’s can-do attitudes— and was especially pleased at how they came together as one group in the rivalry rematch

against Hillcrest.

The Colts lost the first game at their crosstown rivals by a 2-0 score back in September.

But, avenging that loss in a 3-0 win at home against Hillcrest and earning that final spot in the state tournament on the last day of the regular season Sept. 27 was a memory that Bryce Harvest said he’ll carry in his pocket forever.

“I would say beating Hillcrest at home on our last game to make the playoffs with the last seed—a feat that hasn't been done in few years now,” he said.

Looking ahead, Cottonwood’s new coach said he has spent the past eight years as either an assistant coach in the boys’ program or as a head coach for his club team. But, as Bryce Harvest fades back onto his brother Brylee Harvest’s Colts’ boys team as an assistant coach, this Cottonwood girls team was by far one he’ll never forget.

“There was never a dull moment, I've been [coaching] for about eight years now and I can say with the outmost confidence that this team was my favorite team I've ever coached,” said Bryce Harvest of this Colts squad. “The girls may not have had the skill at times to defeat opponents, but their resilience, happiness and passion would shine through those difficult times.

Many of the coaching staff also share the same sentiment as me.” l

I

t had been a tough season. Eight games, eight straight losses. According to new Cottonwood head football coach Donovan Malmrose, none of that mattered in the minds of his players.

“They were focused, excited; they didn’t care it was raining,” said Malmrose of the mood before the home finale versus Murray. “They just wanted to end the regular season playing hard for each other and win that game for the seniors.”

So, they did that Oct. 12 on Senior Night, galloping to a 17-0 first quarter lead and a 32-16 win.

The Colts won the previous Friday against their other rivals—at Hillcrest. In that game Oct. 5, Cottonwood trampled their crosstown foes, 37-7.

For whatever reason the scheduling gods had not included Cottonwood [2-8] in this year’s 4A state playoffs; it was hard not to be a tad bitter about it.

“Regardless of what our final record said, this was a special group, with the little experience we had they were able to find a way and I wish we had a few more games because they were starting to gel, learn, and put things together,” Malmrose said.

In his first year as Cottonwood’s head coach, Malmrose had good reason to be more spiteful; his kids finished the season on a twogame win streak. They were close earlier in the

season to flipping a switch at Tooele [they came back from 21 points down, cut it to six and lost 52-27]. And at Jordan, a 55-35 loss required the other team’s best receiver to set a state record with six TDs to win it.

The program Malmrose agreed to take over last spring was on the verge of dying as an independent last year. He was there as well, an assistant on a team that once dressed 26 players for a varsity game. In a sport that has an ambulance parked in the entryway closest to the stadium just in case, there is a real possibility that one of these players could end up strapped down inside one.

Yet Malmrose gladly accepted the position when it was offered. Himself a Cottonwood alum and ex-wide receiver, Cottonwood’s new head coach immediately reached out to fellow Colts alumni and players near and far, NFL/college playing experience or not.

Dozens came calling. And so this onceproud program came roaring back this year from 70 players down to stage a comeback not just in players in Utah’s Class 4A—but to high school football, period.

But the new coach wasn’t angry at those state playoff scheduling gods. All Malmrose wanted to do was talk about his players.

And in a way, there’s something special about that, too. l

Overall, respondents are generally satisfied with their current living situation, especially with their access to transportation, the size of their homes, access to parks and open space, and the friendliness of their neighborhood. However, there is dissatisfaction with the cost of housing/rentals and the attractiveness of neighborhoods. The comments made range, from sharing what is working well in neighborhoods, to some with valid concerns. Here is a sampling of what we’re hearing: • “We live in a great neighborhood filled with great neighbors.

We love the diversity.”

• “I reside in a single-family home in a quiet neighborhood with good access to highways, parks shops and restaurants.”

• “Most of the neighborhoods are filled with apartments or houses that are neglected with yards that are also neglected.”

• “There is close access to stores and utilities work well. On the

flip side, there is a large population of unhomed individuals and I wish there was more infrastructure like green spaces that are geared toward community food support infrastructure and affordable housing instead of all the “luxury” apartments being built.”

• “Like the house and location, very walkable, close to Trax, freeway, stores and small businesses. However, undeveloped tracts nearby have weeds, occasional homeless campers and lots of trash.”

• “Not a lot of affordable options. My own apartment isn’t the best and is not very affordable either.”

I am committed to addressing these concerns and working together to make quality and affordable housing available in our City. Our goal is to protect the integrity of our existing neighborhoods, increase access to green space, encourage the development of new affordable housing in areas with robust transportation networks, offer a variety of housing types, and provide programs to help residents overcome financial barriers.

South Salt Lake is proud to be a grant recipient of the RAISE grant initiative to improve active transportation in UTA’s service area.

The grant funds will help construct a high-comfort bike lane (HCBL) in Downtown SSL. This project will create a safe walkable and bikeable route that connects to Parley’s Trail for residents and visitors to get around. The current plan is for the HCBL route to run south from 2100 S along Main St and West Temple to the Parley’s Trail. With an estimated cost of $2M, this project is a priority for the city and will be funded through a combination of the RAISE grant and local matching funds. We’re excited to move forward and will share updates as we make progress.

Public Safety Kem and Carolyn Gardener Mental Health Crisis Care Center OPENING IN FEBRUARY 2025 If you’ve driven past lately, you’ve possibly wondered what is under construction along 3300 South and 1000 West. To assist, we reached out to Kevin Curtis, Crisis Services Director of the Huntsman Mental Health Institute to learn more about this new building’s purpose and how it will serve our community.

When the Kem and Carolyn Gardner Crisis Care Center (CCC) opens its doors in 2025, it will be a welcoming haven for

adults experiencing a mental health crisis. The center aims to help individuals de-escalate, stabilize, and connect with community resources tailored to their specific mental health needs. By bringing together critical crisis services and various community resources in one accessible location, the center will serve as a stepping stone toward mental wellness. Patients and their families will feel safe, respected, and welcomed throughout every step of their care, thanks to the building’s design and operations.

Kevin Curtis says, “When we open our doors, citizens of SSL no longer need to go to an emergency room, or leave their city to seek out mental health crisis support; they can walk in through the front doors to a best-in-class facility 24 hours a day; locate right in their backyard.” In addition, the CCC’s back door programs have been designed in close collaboration with SSL Police and the Salt Lake County Jail, providing new tools to increase safety near this site.” This facility will employ more than 200 people, providing potential opportunities for employment for SSL citizens interested in mental health care, but also bringing in new people to frequent SSL businesses and restaurants.

How We Serve: SSLPD Homeless Resource Officers

Message from SSLPD Chief Jack Carruth

I want to take a moment to introduce to you our Homeless Resource Officer (HRO) team who are specialized and focused on assisting community members experiencing homelessness within our city. SSL HROs are working diligently to fill the gap in services and provide assistance to those in need. SSL Police is allotted ten homeless resource officers supervised by one sergeant. These dedicated officers have attended enhanced crisis intervention training to better serve individuals experiencing crisis more effectively. These officers work closely with the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), particularly with the Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT), local homeless centers operated by The Road Home, and the SSL Justice Court to provide care to those requiring additional support.

Our HROs recently took part in visiting the new receiving center at the HMHI to better understand what is available to those in crisis. As we move forward, we will continue to prioritize initiatives that make a real difference in the everyday lives of our community members.

With a background in epidemiology and disaster preparedness, Yasmin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our community. Growing up in New Orleans, LA which historically has faced several natural disasters, early on Yasmin’s father instilled in her the importance of preparedness and helping others in times of need. In August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina served as a wake-up call for many, including Yasmin, leading her to pursue a career in public health and community service.

Yasmin is passionate about being an active member of the community and making a difference. She is dedicated to providing resources and empowering community members in times of crisis. With her expertise in disaster preparedness and public health, Yasmin is well-equipped to serve South Salt Lake and keep our community safe and prepared for any situation.

A New Indigenous Garden at Fitts Park

In honoring Indigenous People’s Day, on Monday, October 9, 2023, Mayor Cherie Wood acknowledged that the land we know and live on was originally home to the Yuta-Shoshone, Newe (Shoshone and Goshute), Núuchiu (Ute), Nuwuvi (Paiute), and Diné (Navajo) peoples for generations.

This year, the city partnered with members of the Goshute tribe to plant the area west of Mill Creek at Fitts Park with edible and traditional native plants and trees, such as Globe Mallow, Pinyon Pine, and Mountain Mahogany. We hope this planting becomes a tradition between us and a way to honor the land.

Managing Grief in the Holidays

H

olidays in grief can be particularly challenging with familiar and sentimental sights, sounds, and smells reminding us our loved one is not here. Because this period of the year is built around relationships, a death in the family can make these weeks very difficult. But rather than attempt to just “grope our way” through these special days, there are ways to grow personally through the holidays as grief becomes transformative for us.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is anything but easy, especially if well-meaning friends and family members expect you to just “get on with your life.” Allow time and space for grieving and crying this holiday season. Keeping a journal can provide a vital opportunity for reflection during the holidays. These weeks will not be the same as before because of the “empty chair” at the table so the pain is inevitable.

A list of favorite holiday activities might be quite lengthy but make that list anyway.

The list might include many holiday traditions such when the house is decorated, when and where worship takes place, and in whose home the family meals are shared. Though it is impossible to do everything “just like when Mom was here,” you can evaluate what you do for the holidays and determine, with your family’s help, which of those traditions you want to preserve.

In evaluating holiday traditions, consider creating something new.

Lighting a special candle, purchasing a unique holiday decoration, providing gifts to a needy family, or hosting an international student can become meaningful holiday traditions.

Well-meaning friends or family may want you to attend parties and gatherings, hoping to “cheer you up” but take control of your schedule and do only as much celebrating as you feel ready to do. Choosing which events to participate in acknowledges that grief is a tiring experience. Even under the best of circumstances, holidays can be taxing so attempting to attend every event, party, or celebration may bring about total exhaustion. Instead, say “no” to some well-intentioned invitations.

Simply remind friends, “My energy level hasn’t returned to where it was before he died; thank you for understanding my need to decline.”

Pay close attention to physical well-being, too. Adequate rest, good nutrition, and moderate exercise is essential for the grief process. Lean meats with fresh fruits and vegetables are better choices than sugar- and fat-laden treats. If your health care provider approves, a brisk walk or other moderate exercise can help you feel better physically and emotionally. And eating a healthy diet coupled with moderate exercise is a remedy for insomnia for many mourners.

Be sure to consider the spiritual aspects of life, too. Because holidays have spiritual roots make sure to include time for worship and reflection during this period.

Volunteering to help others or making a memorial contribution is a meaningful way to put feet to faith during the holiday season.

While it is inevitable to face pain at the holidays, following these suggestions can help bereaved individuals and families find transformative growth during this special season of the year.

Salt Lake County won’t be shutting down

W

e’ve all heard the threat of a possible federal government shutdown if Congress can’t get their act together.

A stopgap bill was passed to push the Oct. 1 deadline to Nov. 15. But what will happen on Nov. 15? No one really knows. Here in Salt Lake County, you don’t have to worry about programs not getting funded, budgets not being balanced or debts escalating. Our Salt Lake County Council takes very seriously our charge to ensure a balanced budget will keep the county operating.

October begins the county budget process with the mayor presenting her 2024 budget to the council, setting the stage for a meticulous six-week evaluation by the council. During this time, we scrutinize proposals, dissect programs, and engage department heads in rigorous discussions. Every decision is weighed against the ultimate goal of a balanced budget that will sustain the county operations. The final budget will be passed on Dec. 5.

The Salt Lake County Council will be passing a balanced budget before the end of the year to keep Salt Lake County operating. You won’t need to worry about the jail not operating, your favorite recreation center closing, libraries shutting their doors, meals not getting delivered to vulnerable seniors, or conventions getting canceled at the Salt Palace. We take very seriously our charge to not only fund what taxpayers expect, but to do it in a fiscally responsible manner.

Utah’s transportation partners release statewide master plan for future

overnment leaders and transportation gurus have released an updated Unified Transportation Plan for Utah, one aimed at addressing the state’s needs through 2050. It encompasses all forms of transportation, from cars, buses and rail to bike and pedestrian paths.

The plan was a collaborative effort created over a fouryear period between the Utah Department of Transportation, Utah Transit Authority, the Mountainland Association of Governments, the Wasatch Front Regional Council and several metropolitan planning agencies. Its stated goal is “preserving and enhancing the quality of life in Utah” as Utah’s population grows.

“Utah’s great quality of life keeps generations of families here and attracts many new residents every year,” Governor Spencer Cox said. “Careful, collaborative transportation planning is key to ensuring safe, efficient and comfortable travel for all Utahns. Community health, economic vibrance, and livability are closely linked to travel choices—from walking and biking to riding transit to driving.”

Davis County Commissioner Bob Stevenson said the plan “ties things together nicely. We realize all the growth the state will have over the next 30 years and the need to start on some projects immediately.”

The trail systems along the Wasatch Front, for example, are being completed to literally connect with each other. The Parley’s Trail completion in West Valley City in early October helped link east and westside communities, and a new section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in Davis County was planned to open on Oct. 24.

South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey, who chairs the

WFRC, said “the planning process looks at the relationship between transportation, land use and economic development by thoughtfully coordinating housing, jobs and transportation connections together. City and town centers yield numerous benefits by improving access and reducing the time spent getting from point A to point B.” Of immediate concern is the rebuild of Interstate 15 from Farmington to North Salt Lake, with plenty of questions and concerns expressed by residents in the communities affected. It’s a challenge for UDOT. “As our state grows, we are committed to providing safe transportation choices for all people to get where they want, when they want, in the way they want,” said UDOT Executive Director Carlos Braceras. “Those needs are different today than they were in previous years, and in the Unified

“Utah’s quality of life revolves around transportation choices,” said Carlton Christensen, chair of the UTA board.

The plan, which is available to read online at unifiedplan.org, outlines goals for its implementation. An interactive map on the site is broken down by regions, modes of transportation and into 10-year segments, highlighting what projects are scheduled.

It estimates that households will experience almost six days of less driving per year once improvements are completed. The state’s economy will be bolstered through infrastructure investments and job growth. Utah’s GDP will grow by approximately $247 billion and over 271,000 jobs will be created. And the changes will reduce air pollution from emissions by 13%.

Over the course of the plan’s implementation, more than 4,700 miles of transportation roads and pathways will be added.

This is the latest version of a plan that’s been updated for years. Previous versions have been praised by the U.S. Department of Transportation as setting a standard for cooperation between entities with varying needs.l

Hark! the Herald Angels Scream

I

t was the Peri Kinder Cabbage Patch Kid Life and Laughter frenzy of '83 and parents had lost their dang minds. I was a young mother and didn’t think my 6-month-old daughter needed the trendy toy of the year, but watching crowds of people attack each other over a doll was inconceivable.

TV news showed Black Friday sales where hundreds of loving parents trampled their friends and neighbors to get one of the elusive Cabbage Patch dolls. I understand wanting to find the perfect present, but having mom arrested the day after Thanksgiving because she shot a store employee with a crossbow doesn’t exactly ring in the holidays.

Each year brought a new toy so necessary and valuable that people went shopping armed with baseball bats and pepper spray to ensure they got the Furby, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo or Teddy Ruxpin for their child who already had too many toys.

Shoppers expected riots, looting, broken bones and black eyes for every Black Friday sale. News reporters showed videos of chaos, pandemonium and anarchy. If you didn’t get a concussion while saving on bath towels, was it even Black Friday?

I didn’t often participate in Black Friday, although I once waited outside Toys R Us at 5 a.m., in freezing temperatures,

to save $50 on a Barbie Dreamhouse. My early-morning shopping adventures ended when a full-grown adult stole my 8-year-old daughter’s promotional football at Mervyn’s.

If I wanted to experience holiday anxiety, panic and frustration, I didn’t need to shop the Black Friday sales. I could feel all that stress in the comfort of my own home. But now, if there was a Black Friday sale on gas, gluten-free cake mixes or bags of dog food I’d definitely get up at 4 a.m.

Today, Black Friday just isn’t the same. Instead of waiting in line for hours while your toes freeze, people just turn on their phones and cybershop until their fingers bleed. There’s no frenzy, bedlam, fracas, turmoil or mayhem. Not even a hullabaloo. Just scrolling and clicking. Like every other day.

Americans are a wacky bunch. We spend Thanksgiving Day offering appreciation for our abundance and then eat until our livers explode. By midnight, gratitude is over and it’s time to spend until our credit cards warp. Within hours of Thanksgiving dinner, we’re in combat-mode, ready for holiday shopping.

It’s so on-brand for Americans.

Buddhists teach about a realm of hungry ghosts who have large stomachs but tiny mouths. They are tormented by unrelenting cravings that can never be satisfied. A student once asked Buddhist teacher and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh, “What is it like in the realm of hungry ghosts?” he answered, “America.”

Ouch. But accurate.

Because it’s not just Black Friday anymore. It’s Small Business Saturday, Shell Out Sunday, Cyber Monday, TakeAll-My-Money Tuesday and What-Did-I-Even-Buy Wednesday. Social media platforms taunt us with shiny items that

might ease the relentless craving for more. But only for a moment.

Back in 1983, I never imagined how the world would change in 40 years. I thought we’d go on beating each other up for toys until the end of time. I never dreamed we’d be buying holiday gifts online, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on our phones or hanging Christmas lights that could be controlled through an app.

I probably wondered if we’d ever learn that violence isn’t the best way to start the holiday season. Especially a holiday with the catchphrase, “Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men.”

Let’s face it, holiday shopping will always be a jungle.
