WOMEN OF THE WORLD CELEBRATES SUCCESS

I

t was an event to celebrate the strong, resilient women who have faced adversity, yet continued to move forward in their lives to find success.

In December, Women of the World hosted its annual Celebration of Success where the organization recognized the economic, social and educational successes of refugee women in Salt Lake County. The women have overcome obstacles to achieve goals of self-reliance through diligent hard work with the support of the WoW community.

“Your dedication and hard work have not only transformed your own lives but have become a beacon of inspiration for others,” said Samira Harnish, Women of the World executive director, during the event. “I want you to recognize the strength within yourselves. You have faced unimaginable challenges, including the loss of homes, jobs and loved ones. Yet, in the face of adversity, you displayed unparalleled resilience by making the difficult decision to start anew in a foreign land. Your journey from ground zero to where you stand today is nothing short of awe-inspiring.”

The group of 40 women received certificates of achievement for the progress they demonstrated over the last year. Some of the success stories included getting a driver’s license, obtaining a job or earning a raise, putting a down payment on a house or learning English.

The event was held at the Columbus Center (2531 S. 400 East) and featured ethnic food and dancing, and gave the women and their families a chance to celebrate the blending of their native cultures with the ongoing growth

Beyond textbooks: How the maker movement is changing education, fostering creativity and accessibility

I

n Midvale, a sixth-grade girl curiously was examining the workings of Spheros, small, wheeled robots. In Murray, a junior high boy used wood, glue and string to craft a catapult. In South Jordan, an elementary-aged girl was looking forward to creating a 3D butterfly using Tinkercad.

Makerspaces allow opportunities for hands-on making, creating, designing and innovating that bring individuals together in a variety of mediums, including robotics, textile crafts, woodcrafts and electronics.

Commonly found at some libraries, museums, colleges and at the Utah STEM Action Center, the number of these spaces for open exploration have increased, especially in schools, which has given students equal access as well as gain skills in STEAM— science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

“Makerspaces need to be available and accessible,” said teacher Beth McKinney, who helped open the makerspace in Murray’s Hillcrest Junior High in an existing classroom this fall. “It’s important for kids to have a place where they can explore their own interests, talents, curiosities and have that experience on their own with the freedom to do it in a safe, controlled setting.

Many students might not have the tools, the confidence or the opportunity to do so, so it’s important we have a safe space where any student can create and many learn best by doing, with their own hands.”

Makerspaces are known as places where people, or “makers,” create, or “make,” projects using a variety of hands-on and digital tools.

more. Students opt to come to the space during an enrichment class period once per week as well as during the after-school program.

“It’s comfortable here; I’m free to make my own choices, but there’s help if I need it,” she said.

The concept of makerspace is not new, according to Utah STEM Action Center’s director Tamara Goetz.

“Makerspaces have been around a long time,” she said. “They were a place for people with common interests to tinker and build and that purpose still exists. What we’re seeing now is not a resuscitation of an old trend or fad of having a neighborhood tinkering spot in somebody’s garage. It’s become a way of learning and a way of thinking that is beginning to integrate how we teach kids and how we inspire kids. It’s the new way to do project-based learning; it’s maker learning, the idea of learning how to do a design process of iteration to create something to solve a problem that is important to you.”

Goetz said there is an increased momentum around makerspaces.

“Our future as a global economic leader depends on students having the ability to be innovative with technology,” she said.

“Maker learning helps to build 21st century skills and helps students not just consume technology but develop it.”

At Hawthorn Academy, a charter school in South Jordan, teacher Stephen Mesker said it’s those 21st century skills of identifying problems and finding solutions that is being taught in the school’s 3D Design Club, a precursor to what he hopes will evolve into a makerspace for its studentbody.

“We teach them the skills, but the hope is to get everybody involved in STEM and get them prepared for future jobs,” he said.

“Many manufacturing jobs now use 3D design and 3D printing and other makerspace skills that we need to provide that education and opportunity to our students.”

That is key Goetz said.

“Makerspaces are more than just a bunch of equipment with no real intent.

What’s important, particularly in schools, is to address how can the makerspace aligns and integrates into the mission of the school, more than just a place to tinker,” she said. “It

Such was the case with the STEM Action Center, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. After moving out of an office downtown to its South Salt Lake location where space was provided as a solution to the many FIRST LEGO teams that needed a location to practice and build, the staff realized its potential when “a couple little girls would come by and knock on the window and ask what we were doing. That led us to realize there was a much greater potential space in our community, so we established

an open tinker time.”

They also adapted during Covid-19, to check out activity kits to teachers, which helped them reach many more kids, Goetz said. That led to creating Pop-Up Maker Faires, which are brought into schools to provide free, hands-on STEM activities that students can bring home. The Center also awards grants, which help establish programming, innovation and makerspaces in schools.

While Hawthorn, which purchased a dozen 3D printers from such a grant, began its club last year, others, like Channing Hall, a charter school in Draper, have been operating a makerspace for years and have incorporated lessons into the classroom. It was designated as a state platinum STEM school last spring.

Goetz said that not all school makerspaces are the same.

“Some schools have maker carts, some set up in a library; it can take on different formats and versions, depending upon what schools want. Some schools have a designated makerspace. What we’re seeing is the number of schools are trying to figure out what to do with the library (with the pivot to more online materials) and makerspace is coming into the conversation more and more for those schools,” she said.

In Canyon School District, some schools, such as Midvalley Elementary and the recently rebuilt Union Middle, have designated rooms as makerspaces, while Midvale Middle’s library is used as a makerspace during lunchtimes, at a time when it’s accessible to all students.

“It started here because I like kids to be kids; I want them to know how to play with their hands, how to create and how to solve problems on their own,” teacher librarian/ media specialist Judy Rembacz said. “Makerspace teaches kids how to think. They are in the driving seat, being empowered and passionate about their own learning. They figure out how to create and if something goes wrong, how to make it work. They learn from failure and that’s a good thing. I also like how this connects them with their peers and with the school and that we’re giving this opportunity to all our students.”

That is what teacher Wendie Nielson, at Bella Vista Elementary in Cottonwood Heights, wants students to discover.

“They’re learning cooperation, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving,” she said. “When something doesn’t work, they got to change their thought process to hopefully make it work the next time.”

Fifth-grader Anna Armstrong was learning about coding using an Intelino smart train.

“It’s going to help with my future; I’m seeing all the things I can do with coding,” she said. “I want to be an astronaut, so I’ll need to know a lot about computers and coding. In makerspace, there’s science and math and communication as we work on things together, but a lot of it is trying to figure it out on my own.”

Bella Vista’s first-year principal Angi Holden already has seen an increase of STEAM learning at her school.

“We offer STEAM enrichment with after-school programming, and we have our STEAM Fridays where students rotate every five weeks through lessons around engaging topics created by our teachers,” she said. “Our goal is to expand to become a STEM-designated school, so students are prepared for the workforce, beyond academics.”

Preparing all students in STEAM education is the goal behind the grants received

by Canyons School District’s Digital Teaching and Learning Specialist Chandra Martz, who was overseeing a family STEAM night at Midvale Elementary.

When Martz was in high school, she remembers being the only female in a STEM class of 25 students.

“It always bothered me, so I want to get more girls into STEM. Canyons’ goal is to get every student college and career ready, so we’re trying to do that through STEAM,” she said. “I want as many kids as possible to be able to see STEAM in their future. I want girls to be able to see that they can be engineers. I want children of color to see that they can get a job in the field that pays well.

I feel a lot of people in some of our Canyons communities are working three jobs just to

try to make ends meet. There are careers that their children can enter, and they can make $100,000 out of high school. I just want them to be able to see that this could be their future; this opportunity is for everyone.”

Martz, and others, are rolling out family STEAM nights in elementary schools, where they bring in kits of 12 activities with challenges that tie into curriculum standards.

“I love that they went through all the activities to align it in math and science standards,” Goetz said. “They have signs at each station so teachers know this challenge aligns to certain standards and they can take that back to the classroom to build off of it; and parents are given open-ended questions to ask to foster exploration with daily activities at home.”

Those kits, which were first originated

by Utah Valley University, then expanded on and provided by Utah STEM Action Center, are available statewide through its network that includes several state higher education institutions, independent makerspaces and the Utah State Library Division. Jordan School District already has STEM activity tubs available for check-out to schools and Granite School District is creating its own set for more accessibility, Goetz said.

At the recent Midvalley Elementary family STEM night, parent Brady Smith brought his first-grade daughter, Amelia.

“I want her to stretch her mind in different ways in science and math and find the joy in learning and exploring through these cool activities,” he said. “I want her to have a mindset and a skill set that solves problems and thinks through things; I want her to be able to create and decipher.”

Another part of Canyons’ program is establishing makerspaces with supplies in every middle school. Five of the eight schools already are in the process or have implemented makerspaces. STEAM squads are being introduced to elementaries and coding clubs will extend to middle schools next year.

“The whole purpose of this grant is to give to students that may not have opportunity,” Martz said. “Some kids aren’t able to go to after-school programs, so we want to

give opportunity.”

That opportunity is extending to teacher training as well as Canyons’ teachers becoming STEM-endorsed, she said.

In addition, the STEM Action Center offers workshops weekly for teacher professional development in technical expertise.

“Teachers walk out with lesson plans that have been facilitated in the workshops and can incorporate what they’ve learned into their classrooms,” Goetz said.

Canyons District Elementary STEM Specialist Cynthia Lloyd hopes that makes a difference.

“With these resources, we’re hoping teachers use them with their curriculum,” she said. “We are noticing that kids are needing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

It’s not just STEAM. It’s also sitting down and reading informational text. They’re not getting what they need out of it. One of the best ways to get kids to learn is through these STEAM activities because they’re highly engaging; we can teach those literacy skills along with these problem-solving and critical thinking skills.”

Goetz agrees.

“Makerspaces nurture curiosity,” she said. “It’s a place to create, a place to learn to invent and design, and a place to fail and repeat. We learn from failures. We learn to work as teams, alongside other fellow makers, because we’re trying to solve problems together. Communication and organization are a big deal as is resilience. These skills can be incorporated into academic learning. This aligns to the standards and it’s cross-disciplinary. Makerspaces are a welcoming place for everyone to create and solve what is important to them. It’s what’s called ‘a low floor and a high ceiling’ so it provides a huge potential for growth in learning.” l

hile two incumbents retained their seats on the South Salt Lake City Council, two new faces will sit among the council in 2024.

In the closest race, challenger Nick Mitchell defeated two-term incumbent Portia Mila by 33 votes to capture the District 4 council seat.

Mitchell, who also ran for the U.S. Senate in 2021 and the House of Representatives 2nd congressional district seat in 2022, has lived in South Salt Lake for 10 years and is a small business owner.

“This is an incredible responsibility that I do not take lightly,” he wrote in a statement Nov. 30 after his election was confirmed. “I will assume my position with great respect for the community, my constituents and the importance that the role of councilman carries.”

After thanking the voters and expressing respect and appreciation to Mila in his statement, he concluded by noting it will the “honor of my life to serve my community. I look forward to work hand in hand with my constituents to make South Salt Lake a better place for all.”

Councilmember Natalie Pinkney retained her at-large position on the council raking in 77% of the vote, beating out opponent Conrad Campos to earn a second term.

“A brighter South Salt Lake starts today,” Pinkney wrote on social media the day after the election. “Thank you to the voters who invited me into their homes and asked me to continue to be their advocate! Thank you to my amazing team, together we connected and reached out to every register voter. Let’s get to work!”

In District 1, Leanne Huff also won a second term with 71% of the vote to defeat her challenger Jeanette Potter. Huff is a licensed social worker and works as a crisis services program administrator for the state of Utah.

Paul Sanchez ran unopposed to take the District 5 council seat. Sanchez was appointed by the council to represent District 5 this fall when Shane Siwik stepped down.

With the additions of Mitchell, who is Black, and Sanchez to the council along with Pinkney and Councilmember Clarissa Williams, South Salt Lake’s City Council is a majority people of color. l

Growing Stronger Together: South Salt Lake in 2024 As we reflect on the progress made in South Salt Lake over the past year, it’s clear that our community is thriving more than ever. We’ve come together to make significant strides toward improving our city’s infrastructure, laying the groundwork for attainable and affordable housing, and Mayor Cherie Wood prioritizing public safety. While the progress we’ve made is worth acknowledging, there’s still much work to be done. At the heart of our approach has always been our belief that how we grow matters, and putting people first is the key to our success.

As we look ahead to 2024, I’m excited to continue building on this momentum and to keep prioritizing the needs of our residents. We know that great, sustainable communities are built on strong foundations and planning, so we’re introducing two new priorities for the coming year: improving transportation access and enhancing our parks and green spaces.

National Radon Action Month: Test. Fix. Save a Life.

January is National Radon Action Month, and it’s important to know the risks associated with radon exposure. Radon is an invisible, odorless gas that can seep into various types of structures, including but not limited to basements, slabs, and crawl spaces. It is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking, and scientists estimate that 20,000 lung cancer deaths in the U.S. each year are attributed to it. Testing for radon is the only way to determine if it is present at dangerous levels. Shortterm (2-90 days) and long-term (more than 90 days) test kits are available, with the long-term kit producing more accurate results.

Finding Affordable Housing Made Easier with Promise SSL’s LMI Housing Navigator With attainable and affordable housing becoming a growing issue, Promise South Salt Lake has taken a proactive step towards addressing this problem by hiring a new LMI Housing Navigator. Historic Scott School Remodel Offers Expanded Opportunities for Youth and Community The Newly remodeled Redwood Building at Historic Scott School is a big accomplishment that we have been working towards for a long time. We are grateful for the support and funding from the Salt Lake County Office of Regional Development and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Because of them and our team listing this as a priority, dark and dusty corners have been transformed and now let ample light into the building.

Community Development What is an HTRZ? Helping Us Expand Affordable Housing in South Salt Lake.

South Salt Lake is committed to expanding affordable housing options for all residents, and we’re excited to announce our proposal for the Utah Housing and Transit Reinvestment Zone (HTRZ) program. The HTRZ program encourages mixeduse, multi-family, and affordable housing development within a certain radius of transit stations. Our proposal focuses on the Downtown area surrounding Central Pointe Station and SSL Main Street Station and includes requirements for affordable housing units, promoting certain transit-oriented community objectives, and enhancing public infrastructure.

The HTRZ program makes it possible for a portion of incremental tax revenue growth in the area around a transit station to be captured over a period of time to support development costs. This means that South Salt Lake can invest in income-targeted housing costs, structured parking, and other development costs that will expand affordable housing options.

We believe that everyone deserves access to safe and affordable housing. By participating in the HTRZ program, we can make improvements that will strengthen and fundamentally reshape our City, making it a better place for residents to live, work, and play.

The South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce commemorated the grand opening of Midtown Community Health Center’s new location at 60 East 3750 South with a ribbon cutting in late November. As a private, non-profit organization, Midtown is dedicated to providing healthcare options for all individuals, regardless of their insurance status. Under new coach, Cottonwood baseball team works hard both on field and in community

hen you’re sitting in a hospital bed during the holidays, life can get lonely. So the Cottonwood baseball team decided to give back through a tradition continued by new head coach Gavin Duckworth, who has the full support of Athletic Director Greg Southwick.

“We’re excited about him,” said the Cottonwood AD. “And the kids are buying into it.”

Players and staff collected donations since October, according to the Colts’ official team page. The aim was twofold. One, to brighten up the home or office with a poinsettia. But the donors also had the option of purchasing one for the elderly in assisted living and hospice.

As soon as all of the donations were collected, part of the proceeds went to poinsettias—the other portion will go toward maintenance of Cottonwood’s baseball field and help pay for travel and uniforms.

Duckworth was hired as the Colts’ new head baseball coach back in August.

Southwick said Cottonwood’s new coach wasted no time reaching out into the community to get other things accomplished.

“He’s done some good things so far… revamped the field, painted the dugouts, and he’s got the Cottonwood baseball facilities back in good shape,” said Southwick of his new coach Duckworth who

Harnish thanked her staff who work tirelessly to ensure women in the program have the support and resources they need to reach their potential. She also said the volunteers who donate their time and talents are “the backbone of our organization.” She acknowledged that the combined dedication of staff, volunteers and participants makes WoW an instrument of change in the community.

The next thing Duckworth did was call all players and parents regardless of their standing on last year’s team to a meeting. That’s where he lined up some suggestions.

One of these was that interested Colts were encouraged to participate in a threeschool fall instructional league where Cottonwood would host one week of it. The other two weeks required travel to Highland and Cyprus high schools.

After that wrapped up, Duckworth set up a fun Halloween best-of-three series featuring players who participated in the fall league for Colts and pitted them against kids from Cyprus’ team.

Fall workouts then concluded with a World Series Halloween Bash game on Oct. 30, according to coach Duckworth.

“We are super proud of our boys continuing to trust the process and work hard,” said the coach. “We’ve come a long way since the start of the season but there’s still a ton of work to be done.”

Training will continue with workouts during the winter for Cottonwood, who will now join a new classification [4A] along with a new region in the spring. l

“Your stories serve as a source of inspiration for women everywhere, demonstrating that despite the challenges, it is possible to overcome and thrive,” she said. “Keep pushing boundaries, breaking barriers and creating a brighter future not only for yourselves but for generations to come.”

WoW started doing this event every December to celebrate the efforts made by these self-reliant women. Organizers believe it’s important for Utahns to know these women are working hard to give back to the community. This event also inspires other women to work hard to get their certificates during the upcoming year.

“They’ve persevered toward their goals and are working really hard,” said Ryan Cook, WoW operations manager. “They all have endured so much and they’re continuing to push forward and make a better life for themselves and for their families.” l

he City Journals has been named as one of the 100 Companies Championing Women. The Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, the Cox-Henderson Administration and the Utah Women & Leadership Project created the initiative in 2022, as part of the Inspire InUtah program, to recognize businesses that offer family-friendly policies and women-specific practices that advance women as managers and leaders.

Listed in the 2024 cohort of 100 Companies Championing Women, The City Journals joins other organizations like Davis Technical College, Women of the World, Bennett Communications and Saprea. The City Journals publishes 18 community newspapers each month, along with the weekly Davis Journal. It also creates the Value Pages coupon magazine.

“Women are imperative to our business at the Journals,” said Bryan Scott, City Journals owner and publisher. “Women make up the majority of our readership. Women make up the majority of our employees, particularly our writers. And if most homes are like mine, most of our shopping decisions are made by women, which makes it important to our advertisers.”

While Utah continues to rank as the worst state for women’s equality, the governor’s office and Inspire InUtah hopes to create a business community where women are supported, whether that’s through pay equity and childcare support, or professional development and leadership programs.

Elizabeth Sweat, people leader at The City Journals, said the company has focused on women-friendly practices, including pay equity for all female employees.

“We are transparent about our pay,” Sweat said. “We have the same pay for all of our beat writer contractors based on their length of service and we pay our commissioned sales reps the same, based on the amount they sell. Women and men are paid the exact same for the exact position.”

The City Journals also implements recruitment strategies, focused on increasing the number of women employees, with flexible work schedules that accommodate workfrom-home situations.

“Some were hesitant to say they had school drop-off or such, but I let them know

that we love working moms,” she said.

“Prior to COVID, we had a program called Project Homemaker where we specifically targeted stay-at-home parents. They were appointment setters that worked approximately 12 hours a week based on their children’s school schedules. That is a program that we hope to bring back soon.”

The Women’s Evolution group at The City Journals used to meet in person every month, but with so many remote workers, Sweat sends out a calendar of community and business events that women can choose to attend. The calendar also includes community resources geared toward women.

Female employees are encouraged to find a Women in Business group based on their personal interests and schedules, although they are not required to attend because many have limited time for networking.

The City Journals supports women in leadership positions. Currently, the sales manager is a woman, as is one of the three community newspaper editors. Full-time employees include nine women and seven men.

Eight ways to combat change fatigue this new year

e all are no strangers to change.

Whether it’s a New Year’s resolution, a shift in our career, alterations in our physical appearance, or even the family dynamics morphing as families grow— children go off to college, loved ones move, and parents age—change is a constant factor in our lives.

Instincts might be to resist the change or simply feel overwhelmed by it, both of which may be leading indicators of change fatigue.

According to an article by Dr. Lydia Moussa on LinkedIn, change fatigue includes the following symptoms: apathy (disengagement), negativity (cynical or complaining), stress (anxious) and burnout.

Change fatigue can have a significant impact on our lives, from personal disappointments like unrealized dreams to professional challenges like unmet career goals. It's an exhausting experience that can lead to questioning our purpose and identity. However, it's during these times of change that self-reflection becomes vital. The following resources can help us take a look at our lives in hopes of beginning to understand our passions, needs, and ultimately, our unique purpose.

1. The love language test. This is a concept of Gary Chapman’s where in his book “The 5 Love Languages” he helps us understand how we receive love (physical touch, quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, or even acts of service). This tool helps us understand how we feel appreciated and loved, as well as how we tend to show appreciation and love to others.

This test is helpful in any relationship from coworkers and friends, to children and spouses. Learn more about the love languages on Holly’s Highlights podcast Season 3 Episode 3.

2. Personality tests. Personality tests such as 5 Voices, Strength Finders, Myers-Briggs, and Disc help us put a name to our behaviors and inherit traits and passions. This could be understanding you are an introvert and therefore help give you some ideas on how to engage at a social gathering, to even the importance of setting boundaries in balancing such socials with much-needed alone time to refresh and recharge. Personality tests can also help you identify your strengths and how to use them in careers, teams and personal goal setting.

3. Spiritual gifts. From administration, giving, and leadership to service, ministry or teaching, if you are a person of faith this can be a valuable tool in every aspect of your life, career and volunteer work. Keep in mind this is not the fortune teller of what you need to do—it is more of a guide as to what comes naturally to

you. Local churches will often offer spiritual tests, or you can visit giftstest.com or sdrock.com.

4. Bucket list. According to a study from Stanford, bucket lists can help you “live a life with hopes and aspirations.”

They identify values, goals, milestones and experiences as all having significance in both reflection and identification as to what your lifetime will include. When making a bucket list you might see a common theme that can help you create focus in pushing forward toward what you want in life whether it be job-related, relationship-wise or simply helping motivate you to identify “What’s next?”

5. Dreams. As we navigate the changes in life, it’s essential to reignite some of our childhood dreams. Have you wanted to travel? Take part in certain activities or accomplishments? Be in a certain profession? Permit yourself to tap into your inner child and dream. What part of those dreams can you start implementing or pursuing today, and what’s stopping you now from pursuing them?

6. Goals. When we get in a rut of change we can find ourselves going down a spiraling path, but if we have a goal set before us—something to achieve, to work toward, to look forward to reaching—we are more apt to make progress in living a more authentic and fulfilling existence.

In five years you can either look back and see you are still in the same spot, or you can look back and see even a few things accomplished that got you a step further to reaching your goals. 7. Value/priorities. What is important to you? And where does that rank in your priorities? Once we identify our values and our priorities, it can help us ensure our actions align with our authentic selves. This can help us understand what boundaries should be placed and therefore help us live a more fulfilled life of purpose. 8. Personal Mission statement. Cottonwood’s football team ends season winning one for the seniors

I

t had been a tough season. Nine games, eight of those losses. According to new Cottonwood head coach Donovan Malmrose, none of that mattered in the minds of his players.

“They were focused, excited; they didn’t care it was raining,” said Malmrose of the mood before the home finale versus Murray.

“They just wanted to end the regular season playing hard for each other and win that game for the seniors.”

So, they did that Oct. 12, 2023 on Senior Night, galloping to a 17-0 first quarter lead and a 32-16 win.

The Colts won the previous Friday against their other rivals—at Hillcrest. In that game Oct. 5, 2023, Cottonwood trampled their crosstown foes, 37-7.

For whatever reason the scheduling gods had for not including Cottonwood [2-8] in this year’s 4A state playoffs after ending the season with a two-game win streak, it was hard not to be a tad bitter about it.

“Regardless of what our final record said, this was a special group, with the little experience we had they were able to find a way, and I wish we had a few more games because they were starting to gel, learn, and put things together,” said Malmrose, who refused to be more spiteful.

In his first year as Cottonwood’s head coach, Malmrose had good reason to be more spirited in his reply; his kids finished the season on a two-game win streak.

Malmrose added that the Colts were close earlier in the season to flipping a switch at Tooele [they came back from 21 points down, cut it to six and lost 52-27]. And at Jordan, a 55-35 loss required the other team’s best receiver to set a state record with six TDs to win it.

The program Malmrose agreed to take over last spring was on the verge of dying as an independent last year. He was there as well, an assistant on a team that once dressed 26 players for a varsity game. In a sport that has an ambulance parked in the entryway closest to the stadium just in case, there is a very real possibility that one of these players could end up strapped down inside one.

Yet Malmrose gladly accepted the position when it was offered. Himself a Cottonwood alum and ex-wide receiver, Cottonwood’s new head coach immediately reached out to fellow Colts alumni and players near and far, NFL/college playing experience or not.

Dozens came calling, including John Martinez, who starred at CHS and USC and played in the pros. AJ Jones was another CHS alum/ex-college player who was a successful entrepreneur who took time off to spend several hours a day as a hall monitor convincing kids to try Cottonwood football on for size.

And so this once-proud program came roaring back this year from 70 players down to stage a comeback not just in guys on the ros-

ter of this team in a reimagined Utah’s Class 4A—but in high school football, period.

But the new coach said he wasn’t angry at those state playoff scheduling gods. All Malmrose wanted to do was talk about his coaches— too many to shine a spotlight on here but all just as important as the next: Donnie Beck and Alec Febo worked with the bigs and on strength and conditioning; Sione Finefeuiaki came over from Bingham, offering his expertise on both lines. And Hunter Workman (CHS class of ’19, Alabama) worked on many parts—as did alums/coaches Kyle Delaney (CHS ’97), Kobe Grover (’19), John Durkin, Chris Chidester (’06), and Bret McCormick (’05).

“We’re blessed to have these awesome coaches giving their time and energy for our kids,” said Malmrose. “This last group of coaches makes that difference in our program.”

A look at seven key players According to Malmrose, there were seven guys this past season who epitomized what he and his staff were trying to build.

One stood out despite having limitations that others might have found. Asher Danner was only 5-foot-8 and 202 pounds soaking wet. In Malmrose’s eyes, however, Danner was one of Cottonwood’s player-leaders. It was a philosophy that Malmrose picked up from former Colts coaches Casey Miller and Bart Bowen: finding non-traditional kids who possess smarts on and off the field.

“Asher Danner was an undersized offensive lineman for us. He’s not the strongest, fastest, quickest, but he knows our blocking scheme inside and out,” said Malmrose of Danner, a member of Cottonwood’s prestigious Academy of Math, Engineering and Science, or AMES. “He’s always helping the other linemen with their responsibilities and understands how to use angles to his advantage. Always grades out as one of the top offensive linemen week in and week out. Excellent grades and just an awesome teammate.”

And then there’s Ryan Nielson, he who went viral thanks to the fair catch-free kick he made last year, upsetting Jordan in Cottonwood’s last year as an independent. This year, the senior showed he can do other things— like play wide receiver. Nielson played the position so well that he had 19 catches for 297 yards receiving and three TDs. And Nielson still fulfilled his kicking duties.

Another senior leader: Cooper Post. The player with arguably the most football-like name on the roster had 21 tackles for the Colts to go with one interception was all-in. “Cooper even chose to stay home from a family vacation to stay and work with his brothers,” said Malmrose.

Finally, there was Gabriel Bricio, who was the only junior of the seven the team appointed as leaders. Like Danner, Bricio was undersized at 5-foot-9-inches along the offensive line.

Malmrose is turning the program around so far with this formula, which produced results by the numbers, too: three rushers had 350 or more yards, two QBs threw for 500plus yards and three TD and four receivers ended the 2023 season with at least one TD and 150 or more yards.

And that was just on offense.

On defense, 12 Colts finished the season with 18 or more tackles. Nine guys had at least one QB sack. Add that six players had one or more interceptions, and you’ve got something special in the mix, according to Cottonwood Athletic Director Greg Southwick.

“He’s got something going,” said Southwick of his new head coach. “He’s got support in the community and he’s really leaned heavy into what this program used to be when it was winning region championships.”

To turn around any program, you usually have to start on the defensive side of the football.

But, coach Malmrose had a nice head start in 2023; he already had the guy to lead the Colts as they charged into Class 4A. “Dominic Chidester has been our guy and leader on that side of the ball. He has a great work ethic and bring us a lot speed to our secondary,” said the coach of his senior co-captain who had 41 tackles, three interceptions and one return for a score. “Per game he was one of our leading tacklers, most interceptions, and pass break-ups on the season. He’s the player we rely on to always play to his assignment.”

Chidester (pronounced KI-Duh-Ster) is not new to Cottonwood; he also led the Colts in tackles (89 total) last year for the team in its last year as an independent. In fact, Chidester was among the top tacklers across all classifications in that category.

Normally, that’s not a good omen for any player in the secondary. It means the other team’s offense has surged past your front seven and into the clear.

But Chidester’s spent twice as many snaps at one position: free safety. In Cottonwood’s defense this year due to a much larger roster, the senior still leads the Colts in several

categories regardless, said Malmrose.

That assignment usually includes slowing down the other team’s best player. But Chidester has been closing on tacklers faster than he was before. It’s a part of his play that the first-year coach attributes to how other coaches on Cottonwood’s staff have molded him—a position Malmrose called “field safety” in which the senior will “make tackles” and “break on routes” opposing receivers are running.

Xavier Yazzie was a senior two-year starter for Cottonwood [2-8] who played on both sides of the line. This season, Yazzie racked up 15 tackles and had one sack. He doubled his output from the first two years he played. “His presence in the weight room, practice, lunch room…does not matter where he was but you could never miss him. He was always pushing himself to the limits,” said Malmrose. “He loved and accepted everyone and was a true leader for us in the trenches.”

Finally, Damien Stonehocker is another holdover from the days when Cottonwood was fighting for football legitimacy as an independent. Stonehocker spent his previous three years at The Wood playing both sides of the ball; this year, he was able to play exclusively on defense.

To put it mildly, Stonehocker shined. The senior had a team-high 65 tackles and three sacks.

“Damien is one of my favorite kids, ever.

He has so much stacked against him in his life, but he wanted to be a football player and did everything he could to learn everything we ever taught him,” said former Cottonwood head coach Casey Miller, who added that Stonehocker has enlisted his help in finding a college. “He was a tackling machine for four years. Led the team in tackles on varsity for at least two years, and I know he was the leading tackler on the sophomore team before that.”

For Malmrose, his final wish for his guys was one that was both simple and selfless: that this newspaper had more room.

“Love these kids,” he said, “and wish we could talk about everyone!” l

What exactly is a Title 1 school?

chool is in full swing and children across the valley are filling desks and playgrounds - bright kids with bright faces seeking bright futures through education.

Regarding the school in your neighborhood, or the school your child attends, a question tossed about by parents, teachers and community members is, “Is it a Title 1 school?”

But what exactly is a Title 1 school and what does it mean in terms of funding, programs and student body?

First a little history.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was signed into law in 1965 by President Lyndon Baines Johnson, in his war on poverty. He believed that “full educational opportunity” should be “our first national goal.”

ESEA offered grants to districts serving low-income students, federal grants for textbooks and library books, funding for special education centers, and scholarships for low-income college students. Additionally, the law provided federal grants to state educational agencies to improve the quality of elementary and secondary education.

This original Congressional act provides Title 1 funding.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is the most recent Congressional reauthorization of the ESEA. President Barack Obama signed this into law in 2015.

The version of the ESEA (prior to the ESSA) was the No Child Left Behind Act signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2001.

What stats define a Title 1 school?

Schools in an educational district are ranked on the percentage (not the number) of low income children in each school. The numbers are based on U. S. Census Bureau counts of school-age children (ages 5-17).

Any school with 75% of their student body population determined to be economically disadvantaged must be provided funding. Once schools at or above 75% economically disadvantaged student population have been served, the district may serve other schools in rank order, down to schools that are at or above 35% economically disadvantaged.

A school must have a poverty rate of at least 35% to receive funds.

According to Max Lang, ESEA Programs and Related State Initiatives Coordinator at the Utah State Board of Education, “Around 40% of Utah schools receive Title 1 funding, in some form.”

The State of Utah received, “Exactly $75,722,863 in federal funding this year,” Lang said. And according to the Brookings Institute, in 2021 Congress appropriated

$16.5 billion countrywide through Title 1.

The money is allocated to schools in a tiered fashion. Funding tiers are determined using four statutory formulas, run through the state and individual districts, so funding will be allocated as fairly as possible and will meet the schools with highest needs first. Schools may be eligible for funding as determined by one, two or more tiers according to the formulas.

Oftentimes schools will use the funds for increased training for teachers to respond to the unique challenges present in the school, instructional supports and non-instructional supports such as behavior and mentoring, counseling and prevention. Funds are also used for staffing of paraprofessionals.

Another area of emphasis is parent and family engagement. Parents are encouraged to come into the school and see how they can take learning strategies home to incorporate them with their children.

There is no class size requirement written into Title 1 law. “More and more research is indicating that class size alone doesn’t make a difference in educational outcomes,” Lang said. Solutions that focus solely on smaller class size are insufficient.

Additional and unique approaches based on specific challenges within a school appear to be more effective.

Title 1 funds may not be used for things like: food for meetings unless the event is being held for the specific purpose of parent and family engagement. With most of their starters back, Cottonwood girls hoops ready to roll

alk to Cottonwood head girls basketball coach Teresa Soracco, and you can’t help but want to run through a brick wall for the lady.

“The team is looking good!” stated coach Soracco hardly containing her excitement. “We are looking forward to building off the success we had last season.”

Soracco literally became an urban legend last year, leading Cottonwood to heights it hadn’t reached in a very long time in girls high school basketball.

“We think this season could be even better,” said Cottonwood Athletic Director Greg Southwick. “She’s got back almost everybody.”

That group includes the team’s two spirit animals: guards Alivia Hutton and Ciel Budge. Hutton, in the No. 13 jersey, was usually the first person you’d meet in the frontcourt.

Budge was in the No. 1 jersey and the one who would take an opponent’s elbow to the face while they drove to the basket, occasionally would draw some blood—and then do some chicken dance on the sideline afterward.

Both seniors were unforgettable not just for the spirit they infused into the team—but for the ferocious defense and playmaking offense they provided.

Each scored 13 points in Cottonwood’s season opener at American Fork, a game the Colts actually led through a quarter and a half before they fell, 66-40 on Nov. 17.

For Cottonwood [3-3] and Soracco, these early season contests will provide her and her staff with some objectives that they hope to reach by the start of Region 10 play in the new, reimagined Class 4A. “We have a great group of girls who come and work incredibly hard,” Soracco said of her team that includes four seniors and four juniors. “This season we are focused on playing together as a unit on the offensive and defensive end.”

To that end, 6A American Fork was just the beginning; it continued with a victory at Summit Academy 67-44 on Nov. 21. November will concluded with a tight home loss versus Cedar Valley 53-49 and a nearly 20-point win over Skyline.

In December, the Colts hosted Olympus on Dec. 5 and trotted out to a 55-35 win before falling to 6A Mountain Ridge 56-48. Cottonwood still had a matchup with Hunter Dec. 18 (after press time) before its region opener on Dec. 20 against Jordan.

A Bitter Pill

I

’m at the point where each doctor visit starts with “Well, at your age…”. I need to get my liver rotated, my heart valves oiled, my lung filters changed and I need a lot of bodywork done. Nips and tucks won’t do it, I need parts replaced and a complete undercarriage overhaul.

I’ve got 99 problems and the cost of health insurance counts for at least 90.

When I found myself without health insurance at the end of last year, I jumped on Healthcare.gov to explore my “affordable” options. The site states that four out of five people can find a plan for $10 or less a month, after tax subsidies.

What they don’t tell you is that the fifth person has to get a third job, sell organs on the black market or start printing money in the basement to afford a healthcare plan.

As I scrolled through my health insurance options, I got irrationally angry. Plans started at around $500 per month, with deductibles ranging from $7,500 to Lamborghini. Keep in mind, this was for one person, not an entire family with pets and farm animals.

Since I had to register by the middle of December, my email was flooded with reminders from the site. Have I registered?

Why not? Did I forget? Did I become independently wealthy? Did I decide to use the money for something fun instead?
