SGT. HOGAN’S SECOND CAREER STARTS TO TAKE FLIGHT

I

t is not uncommon for police officers to have second jobs, mostly security-related. However, Sgt. Bill Hogan, a community resource sergeant for South Salt Lake Police Department, found a second job that helped fuel his passion.

“I have a wandering heart,” Hogan said.

As a child, he told his mother he would be a drifter or hitchhiker. He said he would live on a boat and never get married. In Memphis, he attended a job fair for the cruise industry. He came home to tell his mother he had found the perfect job. Mom had different ideas.

Second job Hogan got married, had kids, and now has grandkids. He lives far from open water. But he still wanted to go places, experiences new things and see the world. Lake International Airport. Loading bags, unloading bags and helping to park planes helped him fulfill his love of travel and develop his passion for aviation.

“The reason I went there is because I’d heard from a friend of a friend who worked there that you get free flying for working 12 hours a week. I have got to do this,” Hogan said. “I made less money. But that wasn’t my goal. My goal was to have free flight benefits.”

Over the years, Hogan and his family have flown all over the world.

But, working the ramp takes a toll on the body. Hogan started to experience some pain because of the repetitive motion involved in the job, which made him wonder how he could work and continue to travel. His answer was to become a commercial airline pilot or something similar. Police officers have the opportunity to retire after 20 or 25 years of service, which means a second career is possible.

City’s finance director retires after 17 years

A

fter 17 years, the SSL Finance Department has a new director with Kyle Kershaw’s retirement in December.

“Kyle Kershaw has been a presence and part of the fabric of SSL for as long as I have been involved in city government,” said Mayor Cherie Wood. “His stewardship of funds and careful consideration for the best use of taxpayer and grant funds is what I most appreciate about his work.

Kyle embodies what being a public servant is all about; his work and sense of humor will be greatly missed at City Hall.”

Early Kershaw Kershaw was born and raised in SSL. He moved in his early 20s.

He began his 37-year career with SSL working part time maintaining the grounds around the old City Hall. A few months later, he began working full time as a custodian while attending college.

“One of the high points was getting that first part-time groundskeeper job. That job set the stage for me being able to be associated with the city over the next 37 years. I have no idea what would have happened, career-wise, had I not been offered that first job,” Kershaw said.

After graduating from college, he started to work in the Finance Department, processing payroll and disbursements.

During this job, he first learned about the Director of Finance position and its impact on the city.

Kershaw’s advice for his young self is to “treat your coworkers, customers, residents and others with as much courtesy, kindness and respect as possible. Appreciate the hard work and accomplishments that others are able to achieve. And lastly, realize that time moves quickly, and don’t forget to appreciate the good times and even some of the bad times.”

Director of Finance Kershaw Kershaw was appointed Director of Finance in 2004, which means he prepared a lot of budgets.

“Another high point is working with the mayor and city council to adopt an annual balanced budget was always gratifying,” Kershaw said. “There are always more requests and needs than there are resources available to meet those needs.

However, through discussion and cooperation at multiple levels, a financially responsible budget, which met the most urgent needs, has always been adopted. Being involved in that process was always rewarding to me.”

Retirement Kershaw Speaking about how SSL has changed in 37 years, Kershaw said, “When I began working for the city, the population was around 14,000 residents, and it was considered a sleepy, mostly forgotten suburb of Salt Lake City. Due to annexation and growth, the population has nearly doubled. Over the years, South Salt Lake has become a destination for many shoppers, developers, and employers who see real value by coming to the city. In fact, growth is a major challenge the city is currently faced with which no one could have seen coming even 10 years ago.”

Kershaw commented, “I will miss being around and working with some of the finest individuals I will ever know. I have grown to love so many in our ‘South Salt Lake Family,’ and it’s hard to imagine not seeing them often. I will also miss working with and assisting the mayor and the city council with the difficult jobs that they have. And, I will miss being involved in the exciting projects and initiatives that will happen in the city in the near future.”

His retirement plans are still open.

“I’ve been told that I’m unable to sit still for too long, so I hope various things will present themselves to fill my time,” Kershaw said.

His advice to his successor is: “Remember that you are a public servant and treat the public and the public’s funds with respect. Also, remember that the success of each individual in the department translates into the department being successful.”

Crystal Makin Crystal Makin was sworn in as the new director on Jan. 11.

Makin brings over 25 years of accounting experience to the city. In addition, she has served as an accountant in the city’s Finance Department for the last five and a half years.

“While the city is small, it is leading the way in so many creative and progressive ways, and I love being a part of it,” Makin said.

corporate, and tax accounting, but she admits to gaining her fondness for governmental accounting after joining the city’s finance team. She earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Utah State University and a master’s from the University of Utah. She has been a licensed CPA for 13 years.

In her spare time, Makin serves as a foster parent, travels, creates handicrafts, attends hockey games, and enjoys spending time with her family.

James Brown brings resources to older adults through new multimedia project

A

bout two years ago, James Brown, a Salt Lake Valley media personality for over 30 years, started a new venture. He and other board members formed the Living & Aging with Pride nonprofit organization.

Like many older adults, Brown was hit with a rent increase two years ago. His rent went from $900 a month to $2,500 a month.

He realized that he had to move. He reached out to his network and found a home at Sharon Gardens (3354 Sue Street). The Utah nonprofit Housing Corporation built the apartments.

"I started thinking about my own discovery as I've gotten older. Things that I didn't quite understand. I got to go to Medicaid. I got to go to Medicare. I got to go there. I got to go. I've got to do all these things that I was not prepared to do," Brown said. "And I saw a lot of seniors disappointed and angry and upset, and I thought, you know, I want to talk about this since my background had been in television and radio."

Brown began to make his vision come true. First, Living & Aging with Pride was created as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This allows the organization to receive donations. Later a multimedia initiative was added titled "Living and Aging with Pride," which will enable advertising and sponsorships on media products.

The vision “‘Living and Aging with Pride’ is a unique multimedia infotainment program which addresses the inevitability of aging and highlights the financial burdens that impact the aging communities' quality of life," according to their website, Livingwithpride.org.

"It's more than just a television show or a media show. It is truly being developed to be a resource for older adults that they can rely upon. And not only locally, but on a national perspective," Brown said.

The website's goal is to be a one-stop destination for information and discussion of issues concerning older adults. Brown feels that many informational websites push a product or an agenda.

"What I've witnessed, rather, is that when you go to many of these sites, it's more about

the donation aspect of it, you get that upfront, you don't get the how do I deal with this problem upfront?" Brown said. "Well, we're going to give you the solution to the problem. You know, we're going to prepare you before you get the problem. We're going to educate your children because they're wondering what they're going to do when mommy and daddy get 70 and 80 years old, and we're going to help guide them through."

The vision is bold, and Brown has spent two years preparing for the release. He built a podcast studio in a room at his apartment complex. He made partnerships with influencers.

There is a four-person board of trustees and an 18-member advisory board. Brown even has a set designed for future video programming.

"I'm about a month away from introducing to the world our first three episodes," Brown said. "From there, we will hopefully attract the necessary funding that will enable us to produce 13 to 26 television shows. Now, I say television only because that's one of the mechanisms for putting the message out, and we do know that seniors watch television."

The backstory The name James Brown might sound familiar for those living in Utah. For 13 years, he wrote, produced and hosted a show called "New Horizons" on Channel 14 and Channel 7. The focus of the show was to explore diversity in Utah. His open conversation style made the show an award winner.

He was also a featured reporter for Channel 4 for nine years. Before going to TV, he was on KALL radio. A guest on his talk show suggested he move to TV and arranged for his hire at Channel 4. Brown made sure his ethnicity was not an issue when he was hired.

"I told the producer I wasn’t going to be the minority guy. The guy who covers every event involving a Black or Hispanic individual," Brown said. "He asked me what kind of stories did I want to do. I told him I wanted to do good stories. Stories about people doing good things, and I got my wish."

One notable Brown story is when he went undercover in the homeless community. For three days, he panhandled in front of a church.

Brown said he made about $600 a day.

"But it was such a humiliating experience.

I thought, how do these people stand here and ask people for money. It's so demeaning, especially the looks you get," Brown said.

Parents in Granite District urged to monitor students’ social media amid recent threats

T

hreats posted on social media disrupted schools across Utah and other states in December. A vague threat went viral about something planned at “GHS” on Dec. 17. In Granite District, a Matheson Jr. High student was taken into custody “in connection with a threat” on Dec. 16.

“We’re seeing posts and reshares of content across the state. It’s inundating us this morning. The police have been all over it. These [online threats] are very difficult to track,” said GSD spokesperson Ben Horsley on Dec. 16.

The threats were shared via TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram. They caused a “major disruption” to the school day. The district responded with a letter to parents and increased police presence on some campuses.

Horsley said that parents, not schools, are responsible to monitor or restrict students’ social media accounts.

“There are 62,000 students in our district. We have no way of monitoring social media accounts for all of them. That responsibility falls to the parents,” Horsley said.

The letter from GSD urged parents to be proactive in learning what social media their kids use.

"As soon as you are able, please check

your student’s smartphone device for any of the following social media platforms: Snapchat, Instagram or TikTok," the GSD letter to parents stated.

The letter continued, “Tell your children that threatening posts should not be shared, but instead reported immediately to a trusted adult.”

Thankfully, nothing came of the Dec. 17 threat. Horsley said it was vague and lacked credibility, but he reiterated that GSD takes any threat seriously. Threats can always be reported anonymously on the SafeUT app or by calling the Granite Police Department at 801-481-7122.

Students who make threats “for fun” or “as a joke” can face serious consequences.

Criminal charges include a felony charge of making a terrorist threat, and school and district level discipline also apply.

Those consequences and the possibility of real violence are reminders that parents need to know what their kids are doing online. Technology can be hard to keep up with, but GSD said not knowing how to monitor a child’s account can’t be an excuse. Horsley said parents may have to restrict students’ access until they educate themselves.

“The frustrating thing is parents who

don’t understand the technology, but are allowing their kids access to it, are calling on the school to monitor their kids’ social media accounts. If parents don’t have the ability to monitor a child’s social media, please remove or restrict their access,” Horsley said.

Legally, minors must be at least 13 years old to create social media accounts.

Snapchat’s Terms of Service state, “No one under 13 is allowed to create an account or use the Services. If you are under 18, you may only use the Services with the proper consent of your parent or legal guardian.”

Other platforms have similar rules which are agreed to when you click “accept.”

If your child has created a social media account without your consent, there are ways to delete it if you choose to. If your kids are on a family media or phone plan

with you, research how you can monitor their activity. Paid parental control software like Qustodio, Bark and Net Nanny are also available.

In the case of December’s threat, Granger High principal David Dunn told parents to look for specific usernames.

“We are looking for a user account on [Snapchat, TikTok or Instagram] that goes by evil eye, serenity or yelizaveta. If you identify any of those user handles, please contact Granite police at any time,” Dunn said.

Even without specific usernames, parents and guardians should be generally aware. The tip sheet from GSD “Knowing What’s on Your Child’s Smartphone” will give parents an introduction on what to look for. Any threat, bullying, or inappropriate social media use should be reported. l With the widespread use of smartphones among teens and preteens, the district is finding a number of apps being used for cyberbullying, sexting and accessing pornography. While many of these apps can be used for wholesome purposes, we strongly recommend that all parents be proactive in monitoring smartphone use. New apps with questionable content or features are being developed all the time. Becoming familiar with the types of apps are on you child’s device will help build trust and keep unwanted content out of their hands.

MESSAGING APPS There are several apps that act as free alternatives to text messages sent over regular phone and data plans.

These apps are typically seen on iPods and tablets, but are also common on smartphones. A few of these messaging platforms are popular networks for sexting because users feel a greater sense of privacy than typical phone text messaging services.

APPS FOR HIDING THINGS Many applications exist for the sole purpose of hiding things from plain view. In many cases these apps allow users to hide photos, messages, and even other apps the user may want to keep secret.

Some of these apps have deceptive names or icons (Calculator%). Other apps provide platforms where users can post anonymously.

Examples:

SOCIAL APPS Social media and other interactive apps are commonplace among all smartphone users.

However, many of these networks contain adult material not far removed from popular content.

Others are notorious for cyberbullying, and many allow private messaging and photo sharing between strangers.

It’s important to know how your child uses these apps

Apps for sharing photos and videos have always been popular among teens. Many of these apps do not have content filters, and privacy settings are sometimes nonexistent. Live streaming apps are also popular among teens. These platforms allow users to connect via live video feed.

Oversharing and chatting with strangers are common issues.

Dating apps typically allow users to create profiles complete with personal information and photos and browse other user profiles. It is possible for users to create anonymous or misleading profiles. Private messaging features help users arrange to meet in person.

Four sworn-in elected officials discuss their priorities for city

n Jan. 3, Mayor Cherie Wood, Councilmember at-large Clarissa J. Williams, District 2 council member Corey Thomas, and District 3 council member Sharla Bynum took the oath of office at the Columbus Center.

Mayor Cherie Wood Wood begins her fourth term as mayor.

Wood is the longest-serving full-time mayor in the Salt Lake Valley. She first took the oath of office in 2010. The city is different now.

"I have to say, of the four times that I've done this, this was the most inspiring," Wood said. "People are excited about the downtown. When we first started talking about a downtown, everybody was like, ‘Wow, that's crazy. We're not going to build a downtown.’ But now you see big buildings going in the downtown area. And so, people are starting to see what we've been talking about for 12 years."

Wood mentioned how 12 years ago there was an effort to rename the city. However, the initiative fell flat and "was almost offensive to our longtime residents."

"I think that we're all very proud to be South Salt Lake residents and businesses," Wood said.

On another occasion talking about her priorities for the next four years, Wood said, "I will seek to enhance and grow outdoor spaces, support safe and enduring neighborhoods, increase transportation and mobility options and see continued progress in our downtown, along transit lines, and in the Creative Industries Zone."

Councilmember at-large Clarissa J. Williams Williams is a member of the Edge of the Water People clan and is born for the Bitterwater People. Williams is the first Native American to serve on the SSL City Council. Her addition also adds to the number of women serving on the council. Shane Siwik is the remaining male council member.

Williams began her remarks in the Navajo language and switched to English.

"I want to thank all of my family, my husband, and my sons, for taking the time actually to allow me not to be the mother, not to be the wife at home and settling for takeout almost every night," Williams said.

"It's just my passion for the city that got me to run. Also, I love where I live," Williams said.

At the time of her election, Williams was serving on the SSL Planning Commission.

Councilmember Cory Thomas Thomas begins her second term representing District 2. During her first term, street lighting and pedestrian safety were a focus.

"A lot of people know my passion for

crosswalks and pedestrian safety, and that's something I definitely plan on continuing," Thomas said. "I can't do this job without the residents, and I encourage our residents to stay active in this community and to reach out to us on council and let us know what you would like to see improved on in our city."

"I also want to say this is something that I will never take for granted and will always do everything I can to make our city a better place. I am lucky and grateful to have this opportunity and to have the support and encouragement from the residents," Thomas continued. "I will continue to work with my fellow council members. Being on council has not always been a smooth ride these last four years. Some of you may have witnessed that, but I think we're in a good place right now and work together very well."

Councilmember Sharla Bynum Bynum is starting her third term representing District 3. For the last two years, she has served as the chair of the council.

At the first council meeting of 2022, she was re-elected to serve as chair.

"I'm on my third term, that first term, there's a huge learning curve, a lot of watching, listening, learning going on. And then as I start to learn more and more, you're taking action. You're making decisions," Bynum said.

Bynum continued, "And so I thank everyone for the support, and whether you voted for me or not, I'm here to represent you. Some business owners don't feel they have a voice, but I'm here. I'm looking forward to representing everyone in District 3 and working with everyone on staff and on our council."

Other swearings-in On Jan. 11, two new members of the mayor's cabinet were sworn in. Crystal Makin became the Director of Finance, and Christine Simonette became the city's Homeless Outreach and Strategies Director. l

District’s new Mobile Gradebook app helps parents monitor student’s progress

ranite School District (GSD) recently expanded its tools for parents to engage in their child's educational progress by releasing the Mobile Gradebook app. The Mobile Gradebook is available for iOS or Android devices.

"We want to make monitoring your student simple and easy. This mobile access gives student grades and other progress at the touch of a mobile phone anywhere you have data access," Ben Horsley, chief of staff for GSD, said.

Features in Gradebook "The No. 1 factor in student success is parental involvement. Students whose parents have the ability to monitor and support their students have a better chance at success. This tool helps provide mobile access to critical information regarding a student's educational progress," Horsley said.

The mobile-friendly Gradebook is an extension of the Gradebook available on the parent portal on the district's website.

earlier rather than later. It lets you have conversations with your kids about their progress in school. It helps you be more involved as a parent in your child's education."

Parents have access to crucial information on either platform.

• Attendance: Parents can view their child's attendance and tardy record in detail or summary form showing total numbers for each class.

• Assignments: Parents can see non-Proficiency Based Learning (P.B.L.) course assignments. They can see when assignments are due and which assignments are missing. A current course grade is also displayed.

• Course request: If available, students can request courses for the following year.

• E-mail notification settings: Parents can manage daily or weekly notifications. The daily notification shows attendance for that day. The weekly notification supplies a weekly attendance/tardy summary and the current class grade.

• Progress reports: While not a requirement at all schools, parents can see their student's mid-quarter progress reports.

• Report cards: Parents see all final grades for each quarter. Parents can also see the overall G.P.A. and C.P.A. for each quarter.

• Skills: This is for elementary students.

Students are given a 1-4 citizenship type grade.

• Testing: Parents can see D.I.B.E.L.S. and A.C.T scores.

• Transcripts: For grades seven to12, parents can see all courses, grades, and credits earned in real time.

The Mobile Gradebook app is not available at the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. It is only available as a download from the district website. Detailed download and installation instructions are available on the GSD website.

Other apps for parents The Gradebook is part of a suite of other portal apps for parents.

• The Student Center app provides testing results on statewide standardized tests and historical student data.

Nibley Park students create winning video addressing Salt Lake County water issues

ach year the Salt Lake County Stormwater Coalition holds a series of competitions for Utah students K-8.

The competitions are broken down categorically, however, each challenge encourages students to take initiative by creating and championing their own ideas regarding water conservation and sustainability. Two Nibley Park Middle School students, Takarah Parker and Kadence Gholson were recognized for their video titled “Get Your Trash Out of the Gutter.”

Students are given the opportunity to participate in one of four competitions: Big Idea, Prototype, Experiment and Nature as a Solution. Takarah and Kadence won in the 2021 Big Idea category which calls for students to create a persuasive and detailed three- to six-minute video focusing on a specific water issue and consequently outlining a solution for said issue. Takarah and Kadence, both eighth-graders at Nibley Park, created a Public Service Announcement that focused on keeping stormwater drains clean by keeping trash and other waste out of city gutters. In addition to their recognition and award, each girl was given a $100 Amazon gift card.

Both Takarah and Kadence were inspired by the issue of gutter cleanliness because it affects nearly all neighborhoods but is rarely talked about. “We wanted to bring awareness to non-point source pollution,” Kadence said. “If you’ve ever seen rainbow color water pooled by your storm drains, you’re actually looking at pollutants.

That rainbow is actually non-point source pollution. It may look pretty but these pollutants affect the health of our lakes which can affect everything from water supply

to tourism.”

“Beyond any money issue,” Kadence said, “the biggest problem is keeping up with our world’s health.”

Both girls were motivated to speak on the issue of storm drainage because it’s an issue that has many possibilities for solutions.

“One simple solution is community cleanups,” Takarah said. “Anyone can participate and all it takes is getting together a group of people to remove trash from the gutters. These community cleanups can be started by anyone in the community from mayors to schools.”

Outside of trash cleanups, everyday efforts such as undergoing routine checkups on your vehicle can lead to better quality water for everyone. Ensuring that your vehicle is not leaking oil and picking up after your pet, are just a few solutions that can lead to changes.

“With a little bit of knowledge and a little bit of care, we can get our trash out of the gutters,” Kadence said. For these two students, the pinnacle of their message was to find a way to actively engage the community and do so in a compelling and easy-to-follow way.

As far as the Stormwater Coalition is concerned, the two students successfully created a compelling PSA. Carrie Culter, of the Salt Lake County Stormwater Coalition, said, “Congratulations to Takarah and Kadence. And to all those other students who took the time to participate. We thank all of these students for their entries. We are proud to see young minds take an interest in these pressing issues and look forward to holding the competitions again next year.”l

“Because of his, our lifestyle and, and providing for us as kids and as a husband and his work, I don’t think my dad was able to fulfill everything you want to do with flying. And he gave it up. And I would ask him over the years, why don’t you fly anymore, and he would say, ‘It’s too expensive.’”

For Hogan, the next problem was how to fly and get paid. The solution was to become a flight instructor.

On the path to flight instruction “I’ve only had the job probably six months now. But I’ve been working toward that for several years,” Hogan said.

Hogan started flight school in March 2008. He first obtained his private pilot license.

Next, he got his instrument rating. This allows him to fly in any weather using the plane’s instruments. He then earned a commercial license and, finally, his flight instructor rating.

He is now increasing his flight hours and working to build a good reputation in the industry.

“It is nice that as flight instructor that for every hour I am flying with a student, I get to count it as flight time too,” Hogan said.

Hogan works for Ascend Aviation at the Bountiful Sky Park airport.

How does flying help being a cop?

For Hogan, his ability to multitask has increased being a pilot.

A second ability comes from an aviation phrase.

“There’s a phrase in aviation—staying ahead of the plane. Because if you ever get behind the plane, that’s when you’re in trouble,” Hogan said. “So if the plane is going so fast, and you’re not thinking of what’s happening next, when that plane gets to that point, that’s a problem.”

Hogan continued, “The same idea applies to law enforcement. How do I stay ahead of the game a little bit? How do I stay ahead in this

call that I’m on? What’s about to happen? How can I anticipate some of these things and be prepared for them? And so, both multitasking and staying ahead of the plane are two things that I think have helped me tremendously.”

How does being a cop help with flying?

One way being a police officer helped was the experience of talking on the radio. Hogan already knew about different frequencies and how to switch between them. However, this was both a good thing and a bad thing. Police officers always begin a radio transmission telling their call sign. In aviation, pilots and air traffic control (ATC) say their call sign at the end.

“So, that’s where I would screw up. I would always start, and they would look at me like what are you doing? Like, oh, sorry, law enforcement,” Hogan said.

Another advantage Hogan brought to the training was making Go/No Go decisions.

Most aviation students are 18-30 with little work experience and deciding to fly or not was a struggle.

“Some of those younger student pilots that were at my school had virtually no life experience. And they would struggle making these decisions on whether they should do a go or no go decision that day to fly,” Hogan said.

“To them it may seem like perfectly well, why can’t we fly today? But I would tell them no, we’re not going to fly, this weather is obviously terrible, or this happened or this or whatever.”

Future plans Hogan thinks that once he has enough hours, his goal is to be a commercial pilot or perhaps fly corporate jets.

“I don’t want to discount any opportunities,” Hogan said.

Hogan now has 24 years of law enforcement experience.

“I’m looking at somewhere around the 25year mark. I should have all my flight hours,” Hogan said. l

or the fourth year since he’s been at Cottonwood High, head football coach Casey Miller is set to host some of the top football coaches from around the country at the 2022 Utah Coaches Clinic Feb. 18-19. But this year is bound to be a bit different. One of those coaches slated to appear is offensive guru Noel Mazzone.

“We are hoping this year we will make a jump with the guys we are flying in and the fact we got shut down for a year because of Covid,” Miller said.

Known to many as the “Quarterback Whisperer,” Mazzone learned under such notable coaches as Dennis Erickson at Oregon State and Ed Orgeron in the 2000s before working at Arizona State again under Erickson, and at UCLA, Texas A&M and Arizona as an offensive coordinator through the 2010s.

Mazzone has also developed NFL quarterback legends like Philip Rivers and Chad Pennington among others, and is currently an offensive analyst at UConn. But like many in the football coaching profession, Mazzone worked his way up the coaching tree, starting out as a graduate assistant in the early 1980s at the school at which he played—the University of New Mexico.

Miller said Mazzone wants to share some of his knowledge that he’s acquired over the decades with the coaches who are planning to attend the two-day clinic—as do the other guest speakers slated to appear this year.

At press time they include Taylor High School (Texas) head coach, athletic director and read-option guru Brandon Houston (see more at CoachHuey.com), longtime defensive coordinator Ty Gower and Beaumont High School (California) head coach Jeff Steinberg.

For Miller, bringing such coaching expertise to the foot of the Wasatch Mountains for a coaches camp is a necessary step in the evolution of the state’s high school football coaches.

“We have improved the format of it a lot

[over the past four years]. It is becoming more high school based, less college based, and we have grown slowly to where we have over 100 now,” said Miller, who started this clinic eight years ago when he was the head coach at Hillcrest High.

Having a coaches clinic at Cottonwood also means that Utah’s best and brightest don’t always have to travel too far to get the best and latest coaching tips and can stay closer to home, added Miller.

“My coaches can learn good football from nationally recognized coaches,” Miller said. “We don't have to pay to go/stay in a casino resort at the other places, and it allows them to network with other coaches in state.”

Starting Friday, Feb. 18 at 4:30 p.m. at Cottonwood, coaches will listen to several of the afore-mentioned guest speakers before meeting at a nearby restaurant later that evening for a coaches dinner.

Coaches will return to Cottonwood High the morning of Saturday, Feb. 19 to participate in breakout sessions before the final guest speaker addresses the group from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Breakfast and a catered lunch will be included with Saturday’s early sessions, said Miller.

After the final guest speaker on Saturday the coaches will go back to breakout sessions for the remainder of that afternoon and part of the evening, Miller said. Saturday’s session will allow the coaches attending to share notes and tips on how they can improve their programs and build this coaching fraternity. To close out the two-day clinic, there will be a dinner social Saturday night at a site to be determined along with door prizes.

Cottonwood boys basketball enjoys best preseason in several years

T

he Cottonwood High School basketball team tore through preseason like a wild stallion galloping through the streets of Murray, trampling and tearing up lawns while frantic homeowners called their HOAs wondering how this Colt could be tamed.

The short answer was that he and the other Colts couldn’t be. Not even a little bit, because Cottonwood was flying like a magical steed through the first 11 games, carrying on its backs an 8-3 record that nobody could deny.

If the Colts were still playing in Region 6, they would currently be one of the top schools in that league considering that in this preseason alone they defeated three of the five. Cottonwood smacked Brighton by 10 and Murray by eight to open December.

The Colts then tacked on three huge wins over 6A schools. First, a tough 54-52 victory over Herriman. Then they dragged 6A Granger to the back of the barn Dec. 17 and bucked off that school by 46 points, 100-54. Then right before the winter break the Class 5A Colts traveled to 6A West on Dec. 21 and tamed the Panthers by 23 points.

Were it not for a narrow three-point

defeat to Northridge the Colts would have gone undefeated through their first seven games—an amazing turnaround considering they lost three of their first six preseason games a year ago.

After the break at the Utah Autism Holiday Classic held from Dec. 28-30 the Colts took on three more former Region 6 foes. In order they narrowly lost to Skyline by one point, 52-53 before battling a tough Highland losing 57-59 one day later.

Cottonwood made up for those two losses, however, by thumping East in the third and final game of the Holiday Classic by the score of 70-52 and in the process notched their third win of the season over a former Region 6 combatant.

Leading the way through the first 11 games of the 2021-22 season are senior guard Robbie Yates, who tops the Colts in scoring at 14.7 points per game, senior forward Noah Widerburg averaging 14.3 an outing, and sophomore center Chris Cox, averaging 10 points per contest.

The Colts have just started play in their new Region 7 classification and if an 11-point smacking of Uintah Jan. 4 is an indication of Cottonwood’s potential to win its new region going forward, then Colts fans could be in for an exciting year. l

Cottonwood girls basketball enters a new region with hope

ff to the best start in several years, the Cottonwood Colts girls basketball team has big plans now that they’re in the new Region 7.

This is a moment that Cottonwood athletic director Greg Southwick said two months ago that he’s been waiting for. “Our girls program has been taking a huge step forward,” he said this past summer. “We’re competing. That’s the ultimate goal.”

According to Southwick, this is the time when the Colts get to showcase a squad laden with veteran leadership and a head coach in Tess Soracco who started at Cottonwood as an assistant several years ago and is now growing into the top position with the girls under her wing.

Led by senior captain Ali Tripp whose 17 points-per-game not only leads the Colts in scoring, but is also one of the best scoring averages in all of Class 5A basketball.

Tripp also helped the volleyball team to a state tournament play-in game.

So far the Colts have already had as many wins [four] in 2021-22 as they have had over the past two years combined.

The Colts started the season with a win over Taylorsville in late November.

Following two tough losses to close out the month they picked up their second victory of the year, over Park City on Dec. 9.

Two more preseason losses followed before the Colts got their third win of the season on Dec. 27 over Summit Academy.

They then picked up win No. 4, equaling last season’s entire win total, on Jan. 5 in a 56-45 win at West to close out their preseason.

As Cottonwood [4-7 overall] begins its slate of league games in the new Region 7, it has already been showing progress in its first two games. At Uintah the Colts were down by just two points going into the fourth quarter but ended up losing 48-54. At home to Stansbury the Colts galloped out to a 13-point halftime lead. But a 42-point second half by the visitors that included 24 in the fourth dealt the Colts a 51-58 defeat, their second region loss in as many tries.

At press time the Colts have eight games left to play after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday break, but all accounts appear to back up that the program has been making the necessary improvements that Southwick alluded to a few months ago. l

New Year Brings New Opportunities to Listen This past fall, I learned so much from canvassing and meeting you at your doorstep. More than ever, I realize that receiving feedback in such a personal and direct way is key to understanding and knowing what you value. It is my promise that every resident has a safe, clean home and neighborhood. A strong city is built of neighbors who feel a strong sense of belonging. And this is fostered by getting involved.

Mayor Cherie Wood In 2021, we gathered input from hundreds of you through our Community Values Survey and the General Plan process. We restarted hosting Neighborhood Night public gatherings, grew our social media, and increased direct correspondence. But we aren’t stopping here. We are working on new online tools, including integrated website-app tools for regular, direct outreach, including mini-polls, topic-based surveys, alerts, and more. Stay tuned while we fine-tune our outreach. We are bringing the city to you in 2022!

“Dear Mayor, We need some improvement in our neighborhood.”

I am most excited to announce a new neighborhood-focused outreach effort. ‘Mondays with the Mayor’, which will be held once a month starting in February. We will announce a neighborhood location and take a short walkabout to see the changes, the issues, and share ideas for making things better. Look for me in front of the Columbus Center on Monday, February 28 at 6 p.m. for our first meeting.

I close this month’s message by sharing a recent correspondence from a nine-year-old resident. Her comments on the City echo what I have heard from many of you, and make me double down my commitment to safer neighborhoods. This young resident is a prime example of the power of words. In the letter, they report that the lack of street lighting, stop signs, and other issues on the street contribute to ongoing safety concerns, including theft and speeding. After reading through the message, it was forwarded to our City Engineer, several city staff, and the Police. From this single letter came collaborative responses, which will lead to real and meaningful change in the neighborhood. Thank you to this young resident for reminding us how to civically engage and seek solutions! (PS, you could run for mayor someday, too!)

SSL’s Director of Finance for 17 Years Very well-loved and respected, a fan of Seinfeld, and keen on wearing sweater vests, Kyle Kershaw announced his retirement after working as an SSL City employee for 37 years and serving as the Director of Finance for 17 years. Kyle has helped in immeasurable ways during this time with the City, seeing it through the last decade of unprecedented and dramatic growth. As the Director of Finance, what he found most rewarding was working with the Mayor and City Council to adopt the annual balanced budget. In his words, “There are always more requests and needs than there are resources available to meet those needs. Through discussion and cooperation at multiple levels, a financially responsible budget, which met the most urgent needs, has always been adopted.”

Meet Our New Director of Finance, Crystal Makin As the newly appointed Director of Finance for South Salt Lake, Crystal Makin brings over 25 years of accounting experience to the City. She has served as an accountant in the City’s Finance Department for the last five and a half years.

Crystal loves working for South Salt Lake and sees it as a vibrant and visionary community. She says, “While the city is small, it is leading the way in so many creative and progressive ways, and I love being a part of it.”

Crystal’s background includes public, corporate, and tax accounting. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Utah State University and a Master’s from the University of Utah. Public Safety Helping Our Community Message from SSLPD Chief Jack Carruth The Community Resource Division recently added Lt. Ryan Cram and Business Watch Officer Britney Warner. Both of these dedicated officers are committed to providing their expertise and best service to the community.

Lt. Cram is the commander of the Community Resource Division and will be actively involved with the Civilian Review Board, Homeless Resource Unit, and the Community Resources Unit (CRU). As part of the CRU, we have a school resource officer, neighborhood watch officer, and business watch officer.

Business Watch Officer Warner has over 16 years of law enforcement experience. She

has worked in various capacities including; the Salt Lake County Gang Project, bike patrol, street crimes, school resource officer, and now as the newly assigned business watch officer.

Officer Warner recently completed an in-depth Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training. This training will help her assess a property to address crime prevention techniques and practices.

Officer Warner is a trained crisis negotiator and serves on the Unified multijurisdiction law enforcement critical incident response team. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Officer Warner has the qualifications to meet the demands of her job and will put her expertise to use to assist the SSL business community.

A few decades ago, the Federal Emergency Managed Agency (FEMA) created the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program to give community volunteers the skills and resources needed to assist first responders in dealing with a large-scale disaster. The curriculum is designed to train volunteers in the same basic skills firefighters master, such as search and rescue, first aid, establishing a medical treatment area, suppressing small fires, etc. The State of Utah worked with FEMA to create a new (hybrid) online and in-person CERT learning format that takes less time for volunteers to complete.

After completing the online portion, volunteers attend an inperson training which gives them the opportunity to practice any hands-on skills.

The SSL Fire Department adopted the new hybrid format in 2021, and four residents completed the CERT program. Our graduates preferred the hybrid format because it allowed them to go through the online portion at their own pace. The in-person training spanned two Saturdays and consisted of several hands-on activities. Additionally, the Millcreek CERT program ran their training on the same schedule, so we agreed to merge for an emergency simulation exercise. This increased the number of participants to 11 and helped make the simulation more realistic.

NEW! Homeless Strategies in SSL The SSL Homeless Strategies Department was recently created with support from the state’s Homeless Mitigation fund. In coordination with the Men’s Resource Center (MRC) and the SSLPD Homeless Resource Officers, they plan to expand services for both residents who are housed and those unsheltered. Newly appointed Director, Christine Simonette brings experience from Utah’s Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health and has managed several programs across the state, including serving those who are in substance recovery or gaining reentry into society from prison. Allison Brotherton is the Homeless Strategies Coordinator and has worked on obtaining funds for mental health and the homeless, along with working with other social reform campaigns.

To expand their role and influence in the city, the Homeless Strategies team would like to invite citizens to get involved. The Men’s Resource Center Neighborhood Meeting is held every third Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. and is open to the public. These virtual meetings will include Police, Fire, EMS providers, community-based partners, and City Administration to ensure that the clients and surrounding community are safe and informed. This is also an opportunity for all parties to discuss ways to improve the shelter and keep people and properties surrounding the MRC safe.

The number of people experiencing homelessness in the Salt Lake Valley area has grown exponentially in recent years. Homeless Strategies Director Christine Simonette says, “We want to follow the state of Utah’s lead by working towards making homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring. To accomplish this, we need to make sure the MRC continues to be a safe space for healing.” Their primary goal is to maintain good relationships with community partners to provide creative housing solutions and rehabilitation resources moving forward.

New Planning Commissioner, Meet Olivia Spencer Representing District 5, Olivia Spencer is our newest South Salt Lake Planning Commissioner. The Planning Commission is a local municipal committee that reviews proposed developments, as well as land uses, and offers insight and advice that impacts the current and future success of South Salt Lake.

Olivia grew up in the Millcreek area and graduated from Granite High. She has been a resident for ten years. She holds a master’s degree in public administration (MPA) from the University of Wyoming.

Since earning her MPA, she has committed her career to work in the field of education. She currently coordinates a medical education program with the goal of increasing doctors and medical professionals in rural, tribal, and medically underserved communities in the State of Utah.

Over the years, the South Salt Lake Arts Council has sponsored arts and cultural activities such as the Mural Fest, Creative Arts for Life Classes, and Craftoberfest to provide our residents with opportunities to engage in the creative process. The SSL Arts Council is a non-profit 501(c)(3) and is organized and managed by the City of South Salt Lake with a volunteer Board of Directors. This year, the SSL Arts Council Board is excited to include two new additions, Erik Ostling and Maranda Hawkes.

Erik Ostling has been a commercial advertising photographer in the Salt Lake valley for nearly 30 years. With a local and national clientele, he’s traveled extensively in the US and overseas on a variety of projects. More recently, he and two friends started Beehive Distilling, a craft distillery based in South Salt Lake’s Creative Industry Zone. In his free time, Erik enjoys biking in the foothills and skiing Utah’s amazing mountains. Biking to work on the S-Line path with murals as a backdrop is his favorite way to start a summer day.

Studying Art and Theatre at the University of Utah, Maranda has a BFA in Performing Arts Design. Also passionate about pets, Maranda has worked with ‘No More Homeless Pets in Utah’ for many years and was on several committees for large pet adoption events and fundraisers. For fun, she has painted murals at their dog kennel. She also has experience with special event decorating, and floral design.

Maranda has volunteered with different organizations over the years and has been able to share her creativity and design background. She says, “I find it exciting when our community can come together to share our ideas and talents. It creates value and meaning in our day-today lives, and we appreciate each other more! After living in SSL for 20 years, I am looking forward to being more involved!”

Promise New Sports Teams at UICS It has been an exciting semester at Utah International Charter School’s (UICS) Promise afterschool program. They formed a new partnership with SSL’s Recreation Department, which has facilitated several intramural youth sports leagues. Youth have been able to participate in both a soccer and basketball league, with indoor soccer and flag football to come. These sports focus on the im-portance of self-discipline, teamwork, and physical fitness. The pride and excitement around these UICS sports teams have been palpable.

The program has also offered credit recovery courses such as health and computer science, giv-ing students the opportunity to earn credits towards graduating high school during afterschool hours. The UICS Promise team has also partnered with 4H to offer courses such as sewing, cooking, and gardening. The gardening program ended the harvest season by showcasing their tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers at the SL County Fair.

We are excited to see what the rest of the year holds here at the UICS Promise afterschool pro-gram!

How much does the city use in grants and donations?

A

ccording to the Giving USA 2021 annual report, corporations donated roughly $16.88 billion in 2020.

However, they also noted this was a 6.1% decline from 2019.

"Corporations are more likely to give when the stock market is up because stock market values are an indicator of financial and economic security," the report said.

In addition, "America's 1.3 million charitable nonprofits feed, heal, shelter, educate, nurture and inspire people of every age, gender, race and socioeconomic status, from coast to coast, border to border, and beyond," noted the National Council of Nonprofits website.

Finally, add the massive grant program, including federal and foundational grants, which created a grant getting industry.

The result is a boatload of funds available to help people and communities. However, this begs the question: is South Salt Lake getting its fair share?

Consider these examples: • Promise SSL is fully funded, except for the director position, through grants and direct donations.

"PSSL relies mostly on grants and philanthropic donations to run the after-school and adult services. Grant funding mostly comes from pass-through federal dollars to local state agencies," Kelli Meranda, Promise SSL director, said.

"In a small community like SSL, it is key to work with outside agencies to support and expand our work. Being able to supplement the city general fund to provide high-quality services for SSL residents for low to no cost leverages our ability to better serve our community.”

• FitLot Park at the Columbus Center was open last October. The $125,000 price tag was paid with grant money.

AARP was a significant donor. It is the only such park in the state.

"I'm so grateful that AARP has been thrilled over the last three years to build one of these FitLots in all 50 states and three territories. We do it because we love the community," Alan Ormsby, the state director of AARP Utah, said.

• The $5,000 grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries helped Lincoln Elementary buy updated books. It is estimated that 13% of their collection will be new.

"The average age of a book in our collection is 20 years," Kristine Kramer, Lincoln's librarian, said, "and if that is the average, there are a lot of books much older."

• Vivint Holiday Gift Sacks Giveaway at Lincoln Elementary School in December. All 400 students were given personalized gift sacks.

"We have been running Sub for Santa for 14 years," Zachary Ibarra, program manager for Vivint Gives Back, said. They work with three elementary schools and others.

"In total, we're going to give gifts to 4,000 kids this year.”

• Wellness Bus from the University of Utah, which is at the Central Park Community Center every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. The Wellness Bus, which provides screenings and nutritional counseling, is the flagship of the Driving Out Diabetes Initiative (DODI), funded by the Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation.

"If people want help, we can help," Nancy Ortiz, operations manager, said.

• Financial Empowerment Center was opened in November. The purpose is to provide financial literacy and counseling. Mountain America Credit Union is partnering with Promise SSL to supply services.

"This center is a testament to the type of community we have here in South Salt Lake," Natalie Pinkney, councilmember at-large, said.

Beyond these examples are many grants that supply funds for water quality, police department needs, fire department programs, and neighborhood department efforts.

There are examples like the Utah Food Bank providing their mobile food pantry and other pantries at schools and community centers on the nonprofit giving side. Or partnerships like the community garden at Central Park. The garden is sponsored by the New Roots Initiative, a program of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in conjunction with Wasatch Community Gardens.

Other examples include the Best Buy Promise Teen Tech Center or the new Community Opportunity Center (CoOp) at the Columbus Center regarding the corporate giving side. The CoOp is becoming a reality because of the David Weekley Family Foundation funding the art space, the Google donation for furniture, and the Comcast donation for connected rooms and a Lift Zone.

All toll Crystal Makin, the director of finance for the city, reported, “For the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2021, SSL received $4,763,451 in federal governmental grant funding.

Some of that came directly from the federal government, and some of it was passed through other state and county government offices that have been charged with administering the funds. This funding was used, mainly, to fund Promise, Community Development, Police Safety, Covid relief, and clean water."

Makin continued, "SSL received $159,387 in cash funding from nonprofit organizations, with the largest donor being

United Way. It also received $126,255 in cash funding from Best Buy and its nonprofit arm that specifically supported the Best Buy Teen Tech Center. Over the last three years, Best Buy and its nonprofit arm have paid SSL $295,795 to build and fund the Tech Center."

Makin also reported that SSL received in-kind donations to build parks, plant trees, and keep parks and green spaces.

ARPA funding "There are many great programs in Utah offering incredible services for youth and families, making granting incredibly competitive," Meranda said. "There is also a shortfall in available funding for needed services. A report from the National Afterschool Association, ‘America After 3 p.m.’ report, for every child enrolled in an after-school program, eight students are waiting to get in."

At the Jan. 12 City Council meeting, Mayor Cherie Wood announced a significant grant from the Utah State Board of Education ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funding. The three-year, $1.2 million grant will allow Promise SSL to expand its services.

"The funding will help expand current services at our sites to strengthen social- emotional learning and targeted academic interventions for students," Meranda said. "It will also provide funding to expand summer learning programs for youth. It also has a component to pay for outside evaluation from an independent contractor to ensure the services we are providing are meeting youth needs.” l

Wellness Bus helps get residents on the road to better health

I

f residents have a goal in 2022 to improve their health, they need to get on the bus.

It’s the Wellness Bus, the University of Utah Health’s mobile clinic where people can get free health screenings, nutrition counseling, and lifestyle coaching and education to help them live a healthier life.

The Wellness Bus is parked each Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Redwood Recreation Center, 3060 S. Lester St. (3100 South just east of Redwood Road). Times and locations can change, so it is recommended people view their schedule on Facebook (Utahwellnessbus) or Twitter (@UtahWellnessBus).

Step inside and community health workers will measure blood pressure, heart rate, glucose (blood sugar) level, cholesterol, and body mass index, a ratio of weight to height. The information gathered can also help determine if a person is more susceptible to (or already has) diabetes or other conditions, according to Nancy Ortiz, Mobile Health program manager at the University of Utah Health. “We’re just there to help them make lifestyle changes,” she added.

Any additional health history offered by clients can help community health workers and registered dietitians on the bus determine if there are deeper issues that need to be addressed at traditional medical facilities. “We don’t have medical providers on the bus,” Ortiz said. “We like to say that we identify (potential problems).” Clients who don’t have adequate financial means can be referred to free and low-cost clinics for further diagnosis and treatment from doctors and other medical professionals, she added. Most people who visit the Wellness Bus don’t have insurance and it’s not required.

She has worked on the Wellness Bus since its inception. “I love to work with the community helping them in the area of prevention,” she said. “Diabetes is a big problem if people don’t take care of it. This is the reason that we are here.”

Pacific Islanders are especially vulnerable to diabetes. Statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services show that Pacific Islanders are 2.5 times more likely to be diabetic than the non-Hispanic white population. More than 3% of West Valley City’s population is Pacific Islander, according to the 2020 Census.

“It’s really interesting to talk to people who came from different countries,” said Vika Havili, who has helped with health screenings on the bus since April 2021.

The Wellness Bus began rolling in 2018 in part with a $5 million donation the previous year from the Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation, which supports organizations and programs that provide health, wellness and other resources to improve the lives of individuals and families.

Larry Miller died in 2009 of complications from diabetes. That’s one of the major conditions that the Wellness Bus helps people address through education and directing them to resources for treatment. In fact, the bus is a key part of an initiative called “Driving Out Diabetes.”

Besides West Valley City, the Wellness Bus makes weekly visits to Kearns, South Salt Lake and Glendale. “We go there because they

have high rates of diabetes,” Ortiz said.

Hernandez encourages people to visit the Wellness Bus to get on the road toward a healthier life.

“This is my passion,” the 75-year-old said. “Giving service, helping everybody.”

Sometimes it is rocket science

T

hree things could doom our country: domestic terrorism, Olivia Rodrigo and the rejection of science. The first two are obvious, but rejecting science? When did scientists become the bad guys?

As more people deny mainstream science, I think about the good, old Russian pseudoscientist Trofim Lysenko. (You can call him Tro.) He and Joseph Stalin were BFFs after Tro convinced Stalin he could “educate” crops to grow using his “law of the life of species” theory which included planting seeds close together and soaking plants in freezing water.

Stalin embraced this nonsense and seven million Russians died from starvation when the country ran out of food, because Tro (you can call him The Idiot) convinced Stalin that science-based agricultural practices were garbage.

There’s lots of science I don’t understand, like quantum mechanics, curved spacetime and string theory, which proves kittens will play with a ball of yarn indefinitely. But I don’t have to understand science because, and here’s a key point, I am not a scientist.

I’m saying this louder for those in the back: science shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

But here we are. Anti-science is on the rise and people (i.e., non-scientists) are putting their own batty (often dangerous) theories

Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for his theory of the cosmos which included the heretical idea that the earth revolved around the sun. Before his death he proclaimed, “Perhaps you who pronounce my sentence are in greater fear than I who receive it.”

And that’s what it boils down to: fear.

Now we have higher temperatures, severe storms, drought, flooding, Oliva Rodrigo and wildfires because, just like when Aristotle and Bruno walked the (much cooler) earth, people can’t wrap their minds around reality.

With little or no science knowledge, deniers continue the assault, and the world is paying the price. What evidence would change their minds? Why do they believe conspiracy theories over proven results? I guess you can guide someone to wisdom, but you can’t make them think.
