BREAKS GROUND FOR A NEW BALL PARK, NEW AMENITIES IN DAYBREAK

“L

et’s play ball,” was the literal and figurative theme to come from the groundbreaking ceremony held on Oct. 19. for the new Salt Lake Bees stadium which will be situated east of Mountain View Corridor and west of Grandville Avenue, and south of South Jordan Parkway and north of Lake Avenue. The new stadium is set to open in spring of 2025 in time for Pacific Coast League play. The move from Smith’s stadium was announced in January of this year.

Community leaders including Mayor Dawn Ramsey and the South Jordan City Council were dressed in their Bees jerseys, as well Representative Mike Schultz from the state legislature, Steve Starks, Amanda Covington, Brad Holmes and Gail Miller, from The Larry H. Miller Company, representatives from America’s First Credit Union and representatives from Downtown Daybreak. Executives from the Los Angeles Angels major league baseball team were also invited to participate in the groundbreaking as the major league affiliate.

“We are very excited to be the new home of the Bees,” said Ramsey.

Bees General Manager Marc Amicone, who became the general manager in 2004 and was named president in 2017 has high hopes for what the new ball park will do for the south end of the valley.

Murray's annual cleanup includes Bingham High’s JustServe Club

I

n a display of community collaboration, volunteers from the Murray Rotary Club, Miss Murray, Murray City and various local organizations joined forces with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to address the persistent issue of litter on freeway interchanges in Murray. Since its inception in 2021, this annual cleanup initiative, which happened on Oct. 14 this year, has become a fixture in the community, enhancing the city's appearance while also alleviating the burden on UDOT. The origins of this endeavor trace back to 2021 when Murray Rotary, Miss Murray, and Murray City organized a citywide cleanup event. However, they soon realized that the freeway interchanges, where litter was most prevalent, were inaccessible. In response to this challenge, they approached UDOT, which welcomed their assistance.

With UDOT's support, the cleanup operation focused on four major interchange locations each fall: 280 East and I-215, State Street and I-215, 4500 South and I-15, and 5300 South and I-15. UDOT's role in this initiative includes providing 60-gallon trash bags, safety vests, and managing the disposal of the collected bags.

According to Andrew Fredrickson, Roadway Operations manager at UDOT, finding 12 experienced Rotarians to supervise the cleanup teams is relatively straightforward. The real challenge lies in recruiting the 60 to 80 community volunteers required for the operation. To address this, organizers used various approaches. They invite their families and friends and post volunteer requests on JustServe.org, usually six to eight weeks in advance.

One of the noteworthy aspects of this initiative is the collaboration between the Murray Rotary Club, the Murray Chamber of Commerce and UDOT. This year, the Murray Chamber of Commerce took on the

responsibility for the south side of the 5300 South and I-15 interchange.

Matt Gibbons, president of the Murray Chamber of Commerce, said, "The Murray Chamber of Commerce is honored to partner with Murray Rotary and to continue working together to make Murray the best place to work, live or visit."

UDOT also commended the efforts of the Murray Rotary Club, acknowledging the impact of their work in reducing litter pickup expenses. Fredrickson said, "The 94 bags of litter the Murray Rotary Club picked up on Saturday was a tremendous help. Thank you."

JustServe.org played a role in mobilizing volunteers for this project. Many volunteers, including 20 from the JustServe Club at Bingham High School, were recruited through the platform. These volunteers were divided into teams, each assigned to clean specific sections of the interchanges.

Remi Hall, president of the JustServe Club at Bingham High School, said, "I thought the project went great. We were able to clean up a lot and get it done fairly quickly, even in our small groups. And we were all grateful for the opportunity to serve."

This year, a total of 64 volunteers participated in the cleanup, forming 12 groups of five to six individuals. Each group was tasked with cleaning a specific section of the interchanges. Along the way, they encountered abandoned homeless camps, shedding light on broader community challenges.

Additionally, volunteers were treated to a celestial spectacle as an eclipse occurred during the cleanup. Eclipse glasses were provided in advance, allowing volunteers to enjoy the event while continuing their work.

Rotarian Jerry Summerhays said, “The biggest impact is on the volunteers. It indeed shocks us how much litter we pick up in two hours….There ought to be anti-litter

campaigns. There ought to be more volunteers helping UDOT. Each year while we are cleaning up, people in cars shout at us, ‘Thank you!’ One of our volunteers, Sonya Shepherd, wrote to me, ‘We drove by later that day and saw the area we cleaned. It was nice to see it cleaned up and to know we were a part of helping to clean it.’”

The Rotarian’s plan is to do the project each fall. If they could get more volunteers, according to Summerhays, they would add

AI can solve teachers’ No. 1 complaint

“The number one complaint teachers have is they never have enough time,” Covili said. “And with AI, one of the benefits we see is that it provides teachers with additional time to work on what they need to do with students.”

Jordan District Digital Learning Specialist Kasey Chambers said the amount of time AI tools can save teachers depends on how much they are willing to use it.

“It's going to take a little bit of time to figure out where it fits into our workflow, but as teachers get more proficient and keep testing it out and keep being willing to delegate to AI, it's going to be a big part of saving time,” she said. “The minute-to-minute decision making of teachers is exponential, so anything we can do to lessen that and make their jobs easier is a Elementary school teacher Jill Firkins uses AI tools win.”

Teachers can make lesson materials more accessible to all students by using AI to read the text aloud, adjust the reading level or to translate it into a student’s native language.

Fort Herriman Middle School teacher Kimberly Mendenhall has been surprised by how quickly AI tools generate content.

She and her colleagues used SchoolAI tools to remotely collaborate on a customized digital literacy lesson plan.

“It gave us a lesson plan, and then it was able to, with prompts, give us a worksheet that we could do, and then a ten-question quiz,” she said.

She said the process took just a minute.

Jordan District has been a leader in implementing AI tools, but other school districts and charter schools are finding ways to connect teachers with AI tools. At Providence Hall Middle, a charter school, history teacher Tanya Rauch said when she or her colleagues find a tool that will save them time, they share it with each other.

Rauch, who has a master's degree in technology, regularly uses ChatGPT and MagicSchoolAI to reduce her lesson planning time.

“One of the eighth-grade standards was to compare historians’ interpretations of colonization,” she said. “I don't have time to pull up ten historians—hey, Chat GPT!” West Jordan Middle School Principal Eric Price, a proponent of AI in education, said saving time is the purpose for developing new technology.

“Technology has always existed to increase our abilities to do other things,” Price said. “We don't go and plant each crop individually like they used to do back in the 1800s. We have machines that will allow us to do that, which then allows us to do other things.”

The “other things” teachers do with the time they save is spend more time interacting with students, Jordan Hills Elementary teacher Jill Firkins said. Before she began using AI tools, she used to spend hours searching through resources for lesson and activity ideas. Now, she uses AI-powered searches to find and customize materials for engaging lessons in a fraction of the time. The time she saves is spent directly teaching her students and providing them with more in-depth feedback.

“Whether it's before school or after school or helping students that are struggling with homework, I can give that planning time to them,” she said.

Chambers said while giving the extra time to students is good, teachers should also take some of that time back for themselves for the sake of their mental health wellness and work-life balance.

“Maybe I'm not working two to three hours a night grading because AI helps me get it done in 20 minutes and I can give that time back to my family, and that's okay, too,” she said. “Any benefit to a teacher making their job easier, making it more effective, is a benefit for students at the end of the day.” l

Several area teams excel at state championship as Utah’s high school unified soccer program grows

In any sport, it’s a difficult accomplishment. In the growing sport of unified soccer, it’s remarkable. This year, 54 unified soccer teams competed, up from 30 last year.

Yet Murray High succeeded in that achievement to defend their state championship title.

Murray High junior Mia Cox scored a goal in that title game and was receiving congratulatory hugs and high-fives afterward from her teammates, friends and family, her principal and superintendent.

“It was exciting,” she said. “I like kicking the ball with my friends on the team because it’s fun.”

Unified soccer is a program of Special Olympics Utah in partnership with the Utah High School Activities Association, that joins high school-age students with and without intellectual disabilities playing side-by-side on the same team. Five coed players take to a smaller-sized field in 10-minute halves playing in competitive or player development divisions.

“We had teams from Richfield High School to up in Logan in eight divisions,” said Boston Iacobazzi, Unified Champion School’s college-growth coordinator. “Several schools had two teams and a couple had three.”

Teams first played in local tournaments before they competed in the regional round robin competitions until the top two finishers from each division were determined. The state championships in those divisions played Oct. 10 at the Real Salt Lake stadium.

“It was close competition for a lot of the teams at both the playoffs as well as at the championships. A lot of games went into overtime and ended in PKs, which was exciting,” he said.

At the local tournament in Midvale, Hillcrest High senior Haylee Wardle was all about winning.

“Let’s go!” she encouraged her teammates. “We want to get that gold.”

Wardle, her teammates and coach Rebecca Remy watched as Hillcrest freshman Johnny Bisby brought the torch into the school’s stadium. ASL club members signed the national anthem as well as the athlete’s oath.

“We have a lot of Husky pride and we want everyone to feel that at our school,” said Remy, who has been an assistant during her 20 years teaching, but stepped in as head coach this year. “I love seeing the students in other areas besides academics, witnessing their sportsmanship and inclusion and the unity with their peers, and using their skills on the field. It’s great our drill, band, cheer and a bunch of different clubs and teams are supporting all the unified teams competing.”

In front of hundreds of fans at the RSL stadium, Hunter High junior Whitney Rasmussen took the athlete’s oath and sang the national anthem before joining her team to take a silver medal in their game.

For many student-athletes, it’s an opportunity to not only compete, but also to develop their skills, meet people, see old friends and belong to a team.

“It gives them a place to belong and to represent their school, just like their peers,” Iacobozzi said.

Longtime friends Mia Jackman of Riverton High and Jaymi Bonner of Herriman High gave each other hugs when they saw each other at a tournament, which was supported by Jordan School District’s superintendent.

Mia’s dad, Jared, is thankful for unified sports.

“It gives them the chance to do things that they’re seeing typical kids do and a chance to interact with some of their peers,” he said. “It makes them feel part of the school.”

Jaymi’s mom, Jeana, likes unified sports “enriches everyone’s lives and gives us perspective. It’s about, teamwork and sportsmanship. It’s not only about winning and being the best. That’s a valuable lesson that our kids are teaching us.”

“I always play no matter what if I win or not win. I really love playing for my school with my friends,” she said. “At school, we

eat lunch together and practiced our kicking and defense, and how to move left and right.

Then, we hang out.”

Her coach, Jenna Fox, said the school’s program has grown from five students to 22.

“The kids keep telling the incoming freshmen about it, so our numbers are getting bigger,” she said. “We have a developmental team and a more competitive one so we’re getting all abilities playing time and we’ve got some awesome peer tutors who are playing with them. What’s fun is the kids are all friends and they respect each other. So, we play together, we go to class together, we celebrate together.”

and administrators were watching the games along with Canyons School District’s superintendent and other district administrators and school board members.

“Jordan SBOs (student body officers) gave us a send-off. They lined up creating tunnels for us to go through and we got cheered and waved off for state. That was super special for our team,” Fox said. “Having the championships at RSL, it makes them feel like royalty.”

Inaugural middle school unified soccer state tournament met by enthusiastic players, partners, fans

t was the first year of Utah’s middle school unified soccer and Jen Morphy was on the sidelines.

She wasn’t one of athlete’s mothers, but rather a mom of a ninth-grade peer tutor, who was assisting the athletes with the ball so they could have the same opportunities to play.

“It’s a really great program, and I love that,” she said. “Through unified sports these kids are getting to do so many things.”

Unified soccer, a program of Special Olympics Utah in partnership with the Utah High School Activities Association, allows student-athletes with and without disabilities to play on the same team.

While the teams are coed and play competitively five versus five on a smaller sized soccer field for two eight-minute halves, the focus is on development of skills, friendship, cooperation and sportsmanship as often players on either team will cheer for one another.

Fourteen teams played in the inaugural state tournament, split in four divisions based upon ability, said Boston Iacobazzi, Unified Champion School’s college-growth coordinator. There were about 150 student-athletes from area middle schools: Mountain Creek, South Jordan, Oquirrh Hills, Joel P. Jensen, West Jordan and Mt. Jordan—as well as from nearby Alpine and Davis school districts.

“They had a great time and loved it,” he said. “It was really cool as some of them had never played soccer before. Some were super pumped to get to wear uniforms with their school’s name on it.”

Mountain Creek teacher Karlee English said that was true of her players, who were coached by volunteer Hannah Swett.

“We have worked hard for weeks in preparation for the tournament,” she said.

“Most of the kids had never even played soccer before this. By the time the tournament came most of the students understood the game and really enjoyed playing soccer. Most of all, there was a real camaraderie between the athletes and the peers they were playing

with. I actually had to do a drawing for peer tutors because so many students wanted to do it.”

Morphy’s son, Dane, has been a middle school partner athlete in unified basketball, which was introduced last winter, and with unified golf, which was new in spring 2022.

“My older daughter was a peer tutor for two years; she would say, ‘they need friends too.’ Dane knew all these kids through his sister, so he became a peer tutor and absolutely loves it. My younger daughter wants to be a peer tutor next year,” Morphy said.

As well as being a parent and a fan, Morphy also is Mountain Creek Middle School’s PTA president.

“We want opportunities to include all our students, like this. We have one kid in their class who has seizures; half of his body

doesn’t work how it’s supposed to. Last year, he was so good at basketball. It was fun to see him be able to do these things in a setting that allows him to excel. With soccer, our peer tutors would shag a ball and it goes right to one of the kids in the class to dribble back up the field. Our school had two teams and what’s fun about that is you have an entire sideline cheering you on. It’s not just parents, but you have all your peers there, so it feels even bigger,” she said.

When teams scored, Morphy said, “The kids would get so excited and then the peers were happy for them and everybody on the field comes in with high-fives and hugs. The sidelines were jumping up and down. They’re so happy and love being a part of all of it.”

English said the score at the end wasn’t what was important.

“Honestly, the highlight for me was watching a young man and his peer on the opposing team (South Jordan) who were very enthusiastic in working the ball down the field and the athlete ended up getting the goal. It was so much fun to watch both teams cheer this young athlete on. It wasn’t about who won the game; it was celebrating as one in this victory for this young man as he scored.

The beauty in this moment wasn’t directed by any adult to cheer for this young athlete; it just happened spontaneously,” she said.

At the same time as the middle school tournament, Iacobazzi also was overseeing 54 unified high school teams in the state playoffs.

“I’d love to get more middle schools involved and have high school soccer players help with their training. Ideally, we’d like each district to run its own middle school league then we hold one state event with teams from all the districts across the state,” he said.

Morphy said the tournament was a huge event.

“The whole community was there together—so many parents, families and so many games going on. It was fun because at Mountain Creek, it’s a tight group. Some of our students could see their friends who had gone on to high school and give them hugs and they’d cheer each other as they played,” she said.

Iacobazzi was planning surprise visits to present the medals to teams at their schools in early November.

In division A, Moose Nation from Mountain Creek got first; SoJo White of South Jordan was second; Eagles Blue from Oquirrh Hills took third; and Mt. Jordan was fourth.

In division B, Joel P. Jensen Jaguars were first, SoJo Blue of South Jordan was second; Moose Stampede of Mountain Creek placed third; and Eagles white of Oquirrh Hills, fourth. Also, according to the website, construction phase 1 will include, the Bees ballpark, approximately 75,000 square feet or retail/ food and beverage space, more than 300 residential units, an outdoor amphitheater and stage, a third light rail station, green spaces including parks, and more than 100,000 square feet of office space.

Mayor Dawn Ramsey addressed all those who attended the groundbreaking, and offered gratitude toward their collective vision for not only the minor league baseball team but for South Jordan City as it continues to expand and grow all while meeting the needs of the residents.

“As we continue on this journey we are mindful of the constant need for comprehensive planning,” said Ramsey.

“I believe that baseball can save our country,” said Cox. “When we gather together at a baseball game, we’re no longer republicans or democrats, we’re not MAGA or woke or anything else, we’re Bees fans.

Monte Vista students discover Chinese culture through Mid-Autumn Festival

ourth-grader Madelyn Karren was anxious to check out all the stations at Monte Vista’s Mid-Autumn Festival before looking into the telescope to see the full moon.

“The Mid-Autumn Festival is a big festival in China and since we’re a part of the Chinese dual immersion here we wanted to do it here, too,” Madelyn said.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is celebrated on the day the Chinese believe the moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest in the middle of autumn. It’s a 3,000-year-old tradition.

Madelyn and her second-grade brother, Jack, already had gotten mooncakes at one of the stations. It’s a traditional pastry eaten during the festival.

They were moving on to make paper lanterns, which, with the festival, symbolize lighting the way to prosperity and good fortune.

“I love that they get to learn about the Chinese culture as part of the dual immersion program,” Madelyn’s mother, Samantha Karren, said. “It’s so fun for them to get that flavor of the Chinese culture and experience their holidays. My daughter

has really loved learning Chinese. She has picked up a lot already and my son is still learning, but it’s fun for them. I really like the benefits of them learning a language when they’re young and I love the idea of opening doors to travel and for business opportunities and to be able to connect with people.”

Sixth-grade teacher Szuying McFarland organized the “cultural and educational event where our school students and their family come together to enjoy an evening event.”

She said that students oversaw the different stations that also included learning about moon legends and other Chinese

culture.

With a full moon that night, students were excited to look through the telescopes of the Salt Lake Astronomical Society to see both the moon and Saturn.

Fred C. Cox was one of a half-dozen members of the society who was setting up telescopes as families began arriving.

“When I was little, I went to the Hansen Planetarium and I learned about the Orion constellation and learned how to recognize it in the night sky,” he said.

“About 20-30 years ago, I even had the opportunity of seeing it upside down when I was in Australia, because it’s a winter constellation. I think having this provides an opportunity for them to be interested in astronomy.”

Former Salt Lake Astronomical Society president Aleta Cox said the group usually holds star parties, often at the Salt Lake County libraries, and at the Stansbury Park Observatory Complex.

“We’ve been to a couple of schools this year; we used to do more schools, but we’re just coming back around now after COVID,” she said. “We hope to put a spark in these little scientists.” l

Big Play Chase: Senior Chase Swensen may be small in stature, but he is Bingham’s gamebreaker

W

hen the Bingham Miners had to have a big play this season, Chase Swensen was the go-to guy.

“Chase has had a phenomenal year,” Bingham head coach Eric Jones said of his senior all-purpose back. “He's been so vital to our success on offense and in special teams.”

Swensen may be diminutive in height at 5-feet-7-inches, but he sure made up for that supposed deficiency with a 34.5 yards per kick return average, good for fourth best in the entire state of Utah.

According to Jones, Swensen put in the hard work during the offseason to make sure he’d be ready when his name got called.

“He really prepared his body [in the off-season] and came into the year turning heads and drawing the attention of our coaching staff with the way he performed in summer camp and fall camp,” Jones said.

Against then-No. 1 ranked Mater Dei [California] early in the season, Swensen’s 79-yard kick return for a touchdown electrified a standing-room-only crowd at Ron Case Stadium.

And versus Mountain Ridge on Senior Night Oct. 13, it was Swensen who burst

past all of Mountain Ridge’s defenders for a 51-yard touchdown run with 4:13 to play to clinch a 37-27 win.

The Bingham senior saved the best for that last regular season game he’d ever play, carrying the football 23 times for 176 yards and two touchdowns.

With that big-play capability, it makes you wonder if Swensen has had any offers from colleges. But Jones said one is unlikely to happen due to his size.

“Given his height, not really. It's unfortunate but these colleges are big on measurables,” Jones said of his senior, who in addition to being only 5 feet 7 inches tall weighs just 165 pounds.

Despite that lack of size, Swensen’s been the team’s top kick returner [379 yards, 2 TD]. And the senior’s also been the Miners’ third leading ground-gainer of the season with 509 yards.

With seniors Triston Brimhall and Carson Sudbury stuck on the sidelines at various points this season due to injuries, Swensen has provided that extra juice when the team really needed it.

Jones said he wanted to add that he’s equally grateful for the contributions the tall-

er and heavier 6-foot tall, 185 pound Brimhall has made for the Miners.

“So many coaches preach that nextman-up mentality, so it sounds cliché … but Chase and Triston were the next men up [from Sudbury] and took advantage of their opportunities,” Jones said. “I'm really proud of both of them. They're incredibly humble, hard-working and tough.”

As a duo, Swensen [86 carries, 509 yards] and Brimhall [796 yards rushing on 116 carries] have been the equivalent of Britain Covey and D’Andre Swift on the Philadelphia Eagles in that Covey will get you the yards and Brimhall, the touches.

And for Bingham, that team-first approach has made a huge difference, according to Jones.

“When Sudbury got hurt in the season opener at Lone Peak, Chase & Triston Brimhall stepped up and filled in incredibly well.

Bingham girls soccer goes down, but not without a fight at the end

E

verything the Bingham girls soccer team wanted to be at the beginning of the season started coming true toward the end.

Wearing the grit and grime that comes with an 8-game losing streak in Region 3 play, the Miners traveled to Salt Lake Academy on Sept. 14 and were tied 1-1 at the halftime whistle.

After the final whistle blew three times to signal the end of that game, Bingham had battled to a 2-1 win.

Junior Izabel Weller netted one goal while senior Ruby Guymon scored the other for the Miners, who on this windy day in Herriman got their first Region 3 victory of the season.

After a tough 3-0 loss to Corner Canyon at home Sept. 19, Bingham was back at Ron Case Stadium hosting rivals Riverton in a game that most would have predicted the Miners would lose.

Going into the Sept. 26 rivalry game, Riverton was at .500 on the season and had already won one of the two games the two teams had scheduled.

But nobody told Bingham this. The Miners got a goal early in the match from senior Olivia Myntti and held on for the 1-0

upset.

Even more stunning? The Miners started a freshman in goal against Riverton. Norah Obed notched her first varsity shutout, ever.

Then Bingham [3-14] walked into the stadium at Herriman and let the crosstown rival know that they’d be in for a fight on Sept. 28.

The Miners got a goal from senior Journey Heward to match Herriman’s and headed back into the locker room tied at 1-1. In the second half, Heward scored another.

But Herriman scored two in the second half to hand the Miners a 3-2 loss.

Bingham’s season would end as the No. 19 seed in the 6A first round at No. 14 Lehi in a 1-0 loss.

But the Miners didn’t go down without a fight. For Bingham, the senior Heward led the way with seven goals this season.

Senior Alexa Shelley contributed to Bingham’s tally, scoring three goals. Fellow senior Ruby Guymon had two for the Miners.

Managing Grief in the Holidays

H

olidays in grief can be particularly challenging with familiar and sentimental sights, sounds, and smells reminding us our loved one is not here. Because this period of the year is built around relationships, a death in the family can make these weeks very difficult. But rather than attempt to just “grope our way” through these special days, there are ways to grow personally through the holidays as grief becomes transformative for us.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is anything but easy, especially if well-meaning friends and family members expect you to just “get on with your life.” Allow time and space for grieving and crying this holiday season. Keeping a journal can provide a vital opportunity for reflection during the holidays. These weeks will not be the same as before because of the “empty chair” at the table so the pain is inevitable.

A list of favorite holiday activities might be quite lengthy but make that list anyway.

The list might include many holiday traditions such when the house is decorated, when and where worship takes place, and in whose home the family meals are shared. Though it is impossible to do everything “just like when Mom was here,” you can evaluate what you do for the holidays and determine, with your family’s help, which of those traditions you want to preserve.

In evaluating holiday traditions, consider creating something new.

Lighting a special candle, purchasing a unique holiday decoration, providing gifts to a needy family, or hosting an international student can become meaningful holiday traditions.

Well-meaning friends or family may want you to attend parties and gatherings, hoping to “cheer you up” but take control of your schedule and do only as much celebrating as you feel ready to do. Choosing which events to participate in acknowledges that grief is a tiring experience. Even under the best of circumstances, holidays can be taxing so attempting to attend every event, party, or celebration may bring about total exhaustion. Instead, say “no” to some well-intentioned invitations.

Simply remind friends, “My energy level hasn’t returned to where it was before he died; thank you for understanding my need to decline.”

Pay close attention to physical well-being, too. Adequate rest, good nutrition, and moderate exercise is essential for the grief process. Lean meats with fresh fruits and vegetables are better choices than sugar- and fat-laden treats. If your health care provider approves, a brisk walk or other moderate exercise can help you feel better physically and emotionally. And eating a healthy diet coupled with moderate exercise is a remedy for insomnia for many mourners.

Be sure to consider the spiritual aspects of life, too. Because holidays have spiritual roots make sure to include time for worship and reflection during this period.

Volunteering to help others or making a memorial contribution is a meaningful way to put feet to faith during the holiday season.

While it is inevitable to face pain at the holidays, following these suggestions can help bereaved individuals and families find transformative growth during this special season of the year.

Kari Pate scored twice for Herriman, bringing her season total to seven and her career total to nine. Naomi Thorsen got her fourth goal of the season in the playoff victory, and Keira Stephany and Peyton Smith got the assists.

The win over Fremont was the first playoff victory for Herriman since defeating Hunter 4-2 in the first round in 2019.

This season might not have been the most successful for Herriman in terms of wins and losses, but the Mustangs were ever so close to posting several more wins. Herriman had four region losses by a single goal and another that came in a shootout. One of those onegoal losses came at the hands of region champion Mountain Ridge where the Mustangs lost 2-1 on Aug. 22. Herriman also lost three other games by just two goals, two of which were at the hands of Copper Hills, which placed second in region.

Not only did Pate lead the team in scoring, but she was first in assists, too, tallying five on the year. Gracie Thorsen had five goals and three assists, while Smith had three goals to go along with her four assists. Goalie Anastasia Estrada had shutouts in wins over Highland (3-0 in the Aug. 1 season opener) and Murray (2-0 on Aug. 10). l

n high school sports, most teams will end the season with a loss, but that doesn’t make the defeats any easier to take.

For the Herriman girls soccer team, the 2023 campaign came to a close with a loss to defending Class 6A champion Davis in the second round. With the setback, Herriman finished the year with a 6-12 record. The Mustangs were 3-9 in a competitive Region 2.

In the playoffs, Herriman drew a tough matchup in round 2 on the road against Davis Oct. 10. Not only did Davis win the state title the year before, but the Darts were undefeated on the year and were riding a 19-game winning streak.

Despite losing nine of its 12 region games in the regular season, Herriman wasn’t intimidated.

The Mustangs gave Davis a good game, falling 3-1. The 17th-seeded Mustangs were down just 2-1 at halftime, as Davis had an own goal accounting for Herriman’s point. But despite their best efforts, the Mustangs couldn’t overcome Davis’s strong defense.

Herriman performed well in its first-round game on the road at Fremont on Oct. 5. Fremont held the No. 16 seed, but the matchup was favorable for the Mustangs, as Fremont had just three wins on the year. The Mustangs got off to a 2-1 lead at halftime and add-

Senior Tanner Orton paced six Bingham boys with a 56th place finish along the hilly terrain at Salt Lake City’s Regional Athletic Complex.

Orton finished the 3.2 mile course in 16 minutes and 30 seconds.

Five other Miners completed the race and finished in the top 110 runners: senior Caleb McDonald [16:41.9] crossed the tape in 70th. Senior Jace Dye [16:59.6] touched the finish in 83rd place.

Several Bingham underclassmen also finished in state places, led by junior Isaiah Gilbert in 87th place in a time of 17 minutes and 7 seconds. Junior Will Evershed touched the tape in 94th [17:23.7].

Sophomore Deagan Gold finished in 102nd [17:45.5].

And to round out state results for the Bingham boys, senior Isaac Allen was in 109th place in a time of 18 minutes and 51 seconds.

As a team, the Miners boys finished in 12th out of 14 teams at state with 358 total points.

For Bingham’s girls, junior Eliza Rains was one of two females to have finished the course at the Regional Athletic Complex in the top 110.

Rains finished in 87th place with a time of 21 minutes even. And junior Kaylee Karlsven reached the finish line in 101st place in 21 minutes and 49 seconds. l

Bingham volleyball wins the Region 2 title, its first since 2015-16

I

t’s crazy to think the Bingham Miners volleyball program hasn’t won a region title in eight years. But on Oct. 24 inside The Pit, they did just that.

“I’m very proud of the girls,” Bingham head coach Reed Carlson said. “They have shown up every day ready to work and learn.”

It’s wild when you realize this Miners team spent the first month of the preseason playing all their games away from home while The Pit, their gymnasium, was under construction.

And yet Bingham [25-3, 9-1 Region 3] lifted its first region title last month, winning a trophy that in years past usually went to Copper Hills. [The Miners lost once to Corner Canyon—others to get past Bingham were Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove.]

So, it was no small feat then that the Miners dispatched Copper Hills, their longtime rivals, with relative ease at The Pit: a 25-19, 25-14 and 25-19 victory.

“We have a saying in our gym that we are going to be better today than we were yesterday, and it has gotten us to this point,” Carlson said of his team that MaxPreps ranks No. 2 in Utah behind Lone Peak.

Not since the 2015-16 school year have the Miners even shared a piece of a region trophy, so this is a big time for the program under new head coach Carlson—who came over from, as luck would have it, Lone Peak.

Carlson, who guided LP to five state titles [2016-18, 2020 and 2021] has already brought the Miners back to heights they reached back in the late 1980s and early 1990s when Esther Halliday led Bingham to three consecutive state crowns [1989-1991].

As luck would have it, the Miners’ last state volleyball title came during that 199192 school year.

It’s kind of hard to believe that the last time Bingham lifted a state crown was the same time that Windows 3.1 was released.

It was also the year that the movie Aladdin came out.

So as the Miners prepare for a serious shot at their first state title in four decades, the people of South Jordan are hoping to put that 40-year genie of jinxes back in its bottle for good. And Carlson said his Miners team appears ready.

“We are looking forward to the challenge of state,” he said. l

Ariel’s odyssey of love comes alive in Paradigm’s ‘The Little Mermaid’

You got your own style, now let it shine through and remember no matter what, you’ve got to be you.”

Many may be familiar with this wisdom imparted by Sebastian to Ariel, who is finding her place in the world.

Ariel’s story in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is about giving up her home in the sea, and her voice, to be with her true love in the human world. While at first the story may appear as little more than a beautiful children’s tale of a mermaid falling in love, it touches on the importance of identity, self-expression, resilience and sacrifice, through the theme of Ariel putting the needs of others before her own.

“We want to tell a quality story about family relationships, growing up and the importance of friendship and putting the needs of others before our own,” Alyse Shattuck said, who is directing the musical at Paradigm High School.

Thirty-two cast members will perform “The Little Mermaid” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16 through Saturday, Nov. 18 and again on Monday, Nov. 20 on the school’s stage, 11577 S. 3600 West. There also is a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Tickets are $13 per person or $36 for a family of up to five members. They may be purchased in advance at Paradigm High’s office or at the door, while seats are available.

The musical is based on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen. “’The Little Mermaid’ is perfect for our venue, and we have the talented scholars to create a truly exciting production,” Shattuck said. “We chose Little Mermaid this year because we were looking for a

family-friendly musical which would appeal to all ages. As a school, we focus on family and the importance of high-quality activities which are appropriate for everyone.”

In addition to the show, Paradigm will host a “Picnic Under the Sea,” appropriate for children and other patrons, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18. Attendees will be able to do activities, meet and take pictures with cast members and eat some fun treats.

It also includes early entrance to the theater with priority seating. Tickets for that event are $18 per person or $50 for families of up to five members.

This musical production is associated with Paradigm’s Musical Theater class, and students “involved are part of the production from the ground up. They learn about the history of storytelling and theater. They learn about the audition process, the importance of rehearsals and rehearsal etiquette, and they are part of set and prop construction,” Shattuck said. “The class is intended to be an introduction to theater and an opportunity for them to improve their talents and skills. They work with a vocal coach, a choreographer and a tech crew to create a full-scale musical.”

Helping put on the show is a tech crew of 13 students as well as other students and parents who assist with “everything from advertising to make-up to props and backstage help.”

“The cast and crew are so excited about this production,” Shattuck said.

“Parent volunteers, faculty and cast all come together to create a truly magical experience for the audience.” l

New JROTC program trains leaders

T

he Mustang Battalion at Herriman High School is the first Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program in Jordan School District. SFC (R) Konrad Wilson is the program instructor and emphasizes that, unlike college ROTC programs which focus on military recruitment, the JROTC is a leadership program.

“About 40% of our cadets pursue a military career,” he said. “The other 60% are here about the leadership, about having fun, about having a class that is not the norm, so they can get out and do different things and learn and explore different aspects. It is not designed as a recruiting tool. This is designed to motivate young people to be better citizens and let them understand that they have the ability to make changes.”

Cadets are encouraged to be involved in their local Community Emergency Response Teams and to serve in their communities.

The program is structured to be run by the students. Emerging leaders take on leadership roles and are nominated to receive awards and promotions at the end of every quarter.

Wilson said the cadets learn life skills and leadership skills such as decision making, negotiation, compromise, delegation, communication, confidence and how to work with other peoples’ personalities, weaknesses and strengths.

“You learn to be a leader and what makes a good leader,” Gary Fiedler,

a sophomore in the program, said. He serves as a team lead in his class and said, because of the skills he’s learned, he handled a recent accident situation differently than he previously would have.

“Instead of being the one to freak out, I was like, ‘Hey, calm down, we’re fine, here's what we need to get done and so then let's do it,’” he said.

Sophomore David Mason said he enjoys running drills and doing physical conditioning workouts in class. Fiedler likes the problem-solving exercises.

During a bomb threat simulation the class did recently, Fiedler said they all had to rely on good communication and teamwork skills to work through the problem.

“We had to be able to communicate with each other because only the person looking at the bomb can see what’s going on, and everyone else was just looking at a piece of the information we needed,” he said.

Wilson said the structure of JROTC provides a safe environment in which cadets fail, try again and learn from their mistakes.

“We go back and we talk about everything that we do—what went well and what we can improve on—so that the next time we do it, we can make it better, we can improve on it, and that helps them grow,“ he said.

marksmanship, robotics, drones, drills and physical fitness.

“The idea is to expose them to a lot of different things and sometimes they'll find that little thing that they never even knew they had an ability for and that it's fun, too,” Wilson said. “They just find out about different interests and ideas and different ways to do things.”

Senior Nancy Londelius said her JROTC experiences have had a positive influence on her life. To prepare for the orienteering competitions, she was newly motivated to resume her running routine which she had previously abandoned.

“I wanted us to win since our group was the smallest, and I wanted to better myself, so I started running a lot more,” she said. In addition to improving her physical fitness, she said the class has also helped her overcome some of her weaknesses.

“It's helped me with my personality and being able to open up more with other people and being able to become more of a leader,” she said. “Now I have to actually talk to people to get what I want. I have to communicate and I also have to tell people what to do, because I’m a team leader.”

Wilson previously taught in the JROTC program at Taylorville High School for 10 years and has seen how it can make a difference in young peoples’ lives.

“I love teaching these young adults

and helping prepare them for life after high school,” Wilson said. “For me, the biggest reward is that a-ha moment when that light comes on in that cadet’s eyes of ‘I get this.’ But what's deeper than that is when those cadets come to me and say, ‘Hey, I made it because you taught me this and you had confidence in me, and I have that confidence in myself now.’”

He hopes cadets learn to do hard things and to ask for help when they need it.

The program is organized in a way that creates a close-knit group of students.

“All the cadets in here support each other and rally around each other, so it helps them build each other up,” Wilson said. “It gives them that family environment to where they feel supported, and they have that platform to build off of to be successful.”

Wilson said Herriman High Principal Todd Quarnberg has been working for several years to get the JROTC program set up. In this, its inaugural year, the program has 30 students. Wilson expects four times as many students next year as word of the opportunity spreads to other high school students in the area. Enrollment is open and students from Copper Hills and Bingham high schools are currently participating in Herriman High’s program.

Behind ‘scary’ voice and mask, Welby students learn firefighters want to help

elby Elementary third-grader Alexander Gray knows a thing or two about fire

safety.

“I know it’s best to stay on the ground because there’s more clear air and the smoke is bad for you; that’s why firefighters wear uniforms and masks, to be safe,” he said.

Alexander wants “to fight fires” when he’s older so he was paying close attention to the crew from South Jordan Fire Station 62 when they came to talk to second- and thirdgrade students during National Fire Prevention Week. Second graders were expected to visit the station later in the month.

“We want kids to understand what they need to do for fires by making sure they know who to call and become more comfortable with that,” station captain Jason Hester said. “I'm always impressed with how much they know like, ‘stop, drop and roll,’ for example. They’ve been taught that and can explain it to us.”

He credits that education from teachers, parents and even station visits — “we’ve had kids who are having a birthday party who have come by to see the station and engine and show them what we do.” For those who haven’t had as much exposure, and to reinforce it for those who have, is why the department came to the school, Hester said.

During the presentation at the school, Al-

exander and other students listened to a 911 call made for a medical emergency by a boy about his age, with firefighters emphasizing the importance of knowing the address of the emergency, the phone number, if the caller is safe and the condition of the person who is in need of help.

“I know I should call 911 if there’s an emergency,” Alexander said. “I shouldn’t be scared to call.”

Last year, South Jordan Fire Department’s four stations responded to 6,966 emergency calls, averaging 134 per week.

Some facts Alexander didn’t know was that station 62’s three fire engines and one truck carry almost two miles of hose and they can connect to any one of the 4,118 fire hydrants in the city.

He was familiar with the fact that a firetruck carries a ladder and more gear and tools than the three engines; those each have a supply of about 650 gallons of water.

Some of the 80 pounds of protective gear that helps shield firefighters from the 1,000 degree heat from fires was shown to students as one firefighter put on the uniform, mask, helmet and gear for students.

“The firefighters were stressing how they’re wanting to help people,” Welby Principal Aaron Ichimura said. “I liked how the fire-

fighters said, ‘Hey, we look scary. We sound like Darth Vader, but we're here to help you.’ I appreciate how the students are learning that at a young age.”

Third-grade teacher Linda Weimer said it ties into a broader perspective of learning who people are and what they do in the community.

“We want them to know who their community helpers are, that they’re safe and what they do to help and how to identify them,” she said. “We talk about a lot of different community helpers in our social studies.”

area wildland fires and recently fought a seven-hour fire in the landfill.

While Alexander and others who may be interested in becoming firefighters have yet to earn their high school diplomas before entering the profession, Hester said they could get their EMT certification or learn about fire science; both programs are offered through the Jordan Applied Technical Center.

There is something Alexander said he can do now to be safe.

“I should always wear my seatbelt,” he said. “And it’s good to sit in the backseat until I become tall enough to sit up front.” l

Marlene Stanley's passion for music finds its roots in

her family heritage. Her parents, one a choral conductor and a Juilliard graduate, and the other a member of the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir, set the musical tone for her life's journey. Under her father's mentorship, Marlene eventually found her way to South Jordan, where she

founded the "Seasons Chorale & Orchestra." For 17 years, this ensemble has captured hearts, becoming an integral part of the South Valley's holiday tradition.

The stage for this unforgettable event is Bingham High School on December 2nd, with performances at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Hark! the Herald Angels Scream

I

t was the Peri Kinder Cabbage Patch Kid Life and Laughter frenzy of '83 and parents had lost their dang minds. I was a young mother and didn’t think my 6-month-old daughter needed the trendy toy of the year, but watching crowds of people attack each other over a doll was inconceivable.

TV news showed Black Friday sales where hundreds of loving parents trampled their friends and neighbors to get one of the elusive Cabbage Patch dolls. I understand wanting to find the perfect present, but having mom arrested the day after Thanksgiving because she shot a store employee with a crossbow doesn’t exactly ring in the holidays.

Each year brought a new toy so necessary and valuable that people went shopping armed with baseball bats and pepper spray to ensure they got the Furby, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo or Teddy Ruxpin for their child who already had too many toys.

Shoppers expected riots, looting, broken bones and black eyes for every Black Friday sale. News reporters showed videos of chaos, pandemonium and anarchy. If you didn’t get a concussion while saving on bath towels, was it even Black Friday?

I didn’t often participate in Black Friday, although I once waited outside Toys R Us at 5 a.m., in freezing temperatures,

to save $50 on a Barbie Dreamhouse. My early-morning shopping adventures ended when a full-grown adult stole my 8-year-old daughter’s promotional football at Mervyn’s.

If I wanted to experience holiday anxiety, panic and frustration, I didn’t need to shop the Black Friday sales. I could feel all that stress in the comfort of my own home. But now, if there was a Black Friday sale on gas, gluten-free cake mixes or bags of dog food I’d definitely get up at 4 a.m.

By midnight, gratitude is over and it’s time to spend until our credit cards warp. Within hours of Thanksgiving dinner, we’re in combat-mode, ready for holiday shopping.

It’s so on-brand for Americans.
