Cox honors ‘Greatest Generation’ of centenarian veterans

SALT LAKE CITY—In honor of Veterans Day, Gov. Spencer Cox paid tribute in the Utah State Capitol rotunda to those centenarians in Utah who served their country with distinction. Six were present and more than 20 were not at the event but live throughout the state. “I’ve been given the privilege and opportunity to honor those who fought, sacrificed and wore the uniform of this great country,” said Cox. “Our forefathers threw off the shackles of the king and took on a great army.” Please see CENTENARIAN pg. 2

Davis School District reports to legislative committee on DOJ settlement agreement By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SALT LAKE CITY—The Davis School District (DSD) met with the Legislative Administrative Rules Review and General Oversight Committee at the Capitol on Monday, to give a review of what the district has been doing to fulfill the settlement with the Department of Justice (DOJ). The settlement came after a DOJ investigation into allegations of race discrimination against students in the district. The DOJ investigation concluded that there was widespread racebased harassment of students of color, specifically Black and Asian American students in the district. “I was retained by the Davis School District in 2021 to help with the settlePlease see DOJ pg. 10

The Davis High girls swimming team won the Region 1 Relays Nov. 7 at Layton Surf ‘n Swim while the boys squad finished second. “This year, we combined relays with individual 100s and ended the night with two fun relays – a T-shirt relay where a T-shirt gets passed on to each swimmer who races with it, and a tube relay where a tube is pulled, pushed or dragged across the pool in a race,” said head coach Kit Barker. “It was a blast!” Those who won events for the Darts were Allie Allen (100 Individual Medley, 200 butterfly relay), Henry Barber (200 back relay), Jane Bassett (200 backstroke relay), Garrick Bench (200 back relay), Bryson Bernhardt (200 back relay), Adlen Groberg (200 freestyle relay, 200 back relay, 200 breaststroke relay), Micah Hale (200 free relay), Taylor Johnson (200 back relay), Maureen Karren (200 breast relay), Sam Landheim (100 fly), Julian Shaw (200 free relay, 200 breaststroke relay), Elsie Smith (200 fly relay, 200 breast relay), Lincoln Smith (200 back relay), Nahlia Stewart (100 Individual Medley, 200 free relay, 200 fly relay), Bo Stromberg (200 back relay) and Kate Whitlock (200 fly relay). Freshman Elsie Crowell broke a school record in the 100 breast at the Region 1 Relays, touching the wall with a time of 1:17.33, “winning by a landslide,” according to head coach Stacy Edholm. “We are so excited to see more records come down this season with Elsie,” Edholm said. On the boys side, sophomore Will Scott had a personal-best swim in the 100 back in a time of 1:00.44, just beating Weber’s Easton Adams by two10ths of a second. “Will had some incredible swims and best times,” said Edholm.
