CENTERVILLE—The pilot of a single engine plane that crashed Tuesday in an empty field in Centerville was killed in the accident. Just after 11:30 a.m., Oct. 10, 43-year-old Donald Nathan Higgs of Plain City was found by first responders

still in the aircraft that went down near Legacy Parkway Trail. “He was the lone occupant and was deceased,” said Centerville Police Lt. Allen Ackerson. “We’ll be coordinating with the NTSB, FAA and the Office of the Medical Examiner on the cause of death and the crash. We’ll take it as a whole to determine all of the factors.” Ackerson said they believe the plane

was out of Skypark Airport. “It went nose first into the ground. South Davis Metro Fire came out but fortunately there was no fire.” Radio traffic received transmission from the pilot saying there was an issue with the plane before it went down, he said. “Until the FAA releases it Centerville Police will maintain security on the plane.” l

KAYSVILLE—Equestrian enthusiasts in Davis County have found a home. The new Davis Agricultural Heritage Center will be up and running soon and offers a facility for barrel racing, mounted shooters, open riding and more. The center is located at 676 S. 50 West in Kaysville near the USU Botanical Center. “Horse show barrel racing, mounted shooters and clubs have already booked from November through March,” said Diane Huffman, events and arena manager. “Roping clubs have al-

ready reached out and want to use it.” The facility is 280x130 indoor and 280x150 outdoor, she said. “We wanted to preserve the agricultural heritage in Davis County. There will still be a 4H stock show where you can see the kids' livestock. Community Christmas that provides for families in need will be here on Dec. 16.” There will be local jackpots next spring, Huffman said. “The jackpot is money riders pay to enter that goes back to those who win. That will draw 110 barrel racers every week. Those events

T

he Viewmont High cross country teams swept through Region 5 with titles in the boys and girls varsity and boys and girls junior varsity races Oct. 4 at Layton Commons Park. “Region went well for us,” said head coach Trent Hooper. “The scoring was tight in the varsity races, but we pulled out the win in all four races.” The boys varsity race ended in a 4343 tie between the Vikings and Woods Cross with Viewmont’s Gabe Hooper’s winning the race in a time of 14:52. The rest of the scoring top five for the Vikings were Ben Hyde (seventh), Peter Gehring (eighth), Weston Egnew (13th) and Talmage Bruschke (14th). The Wildcats lineup finished in second (Brady Christensen), sixth (Ian Thompson), ninth (Brennon Koldewyn), 10th (Micah Gillespie) and 16th (Jameson Blanchard). The Region 5 championship went to Viewmont by virtue of a tiebreaker where David Tevort finished ahead of Woods Cross’ sixth-place finisher Sam Phippen. “Gabe ran a great race, breaking 15 minutes on the three-mile course,” coach Hooper said. “Woods Cross’ Brady Christiansen was stalking him about three seconds back for most of the race, but Gabe made a strong acceleration in the final mile and won by about 20 seconds. As a team, we did not feel
