RUNNING AWAY FROM THE COMPETITION Byline

KAYSVILLE—For much of her high school career, Woods Cross senior Carlee Hansen has been running away from the competition. Hansen was at it again at the 5A Utah State Track and Field meet May 18-19 at Davis High School as she closed out her high school career with three more state championships. Hansen claimed state titles in 3200, 1600 and 800 meter runs, as she helped Woods Cross to a second place finish in the 5A girls standings. “Considering all things,” Hansen said, “I was pretty happy with how it went. I was hoping for a 4:45 (in the 1600), but I was proud of how fast I ran.” Hansen says the 1600 was the focus of her attention going into the state meet. And she did not disappoint. She won the race with a time of 4:49.18, which was 16 seconds better than second-place finisher Timpanogos’s Raygan Peterson. It was the second fastest 1600 meters in state history, and broke the existing record for the Davis High track. Hansen says she could have achieved her goal of 4 minutes and 45 seconds in the race had it not been for a last second lightning delay that caused the race to start 40 minutes later than scheduled. “It threw me way off,” she said. “But I was happy with what happened.” In the 800, Hansen finished with a time of 2:12.48, six seconds ahead of Mountain Ridge’s Taylor Jorgensen to claim the title. The race was at the end of
what had been a busy two days for Hansen, who had also run in the 4x400-meter relay and the 400-meter dash. “I was kind of dead,” she said. “I had run a lot of races.” The Woods Cross senior opened the state meet with a win in the 3200. Her time of 10:57.31 was two seconds better than Mountain View’s Mari Konold. “I ran as slow as I could to win,” Hansen said. Hansen also posted a fourth-place finish in the 400. “My coach came up to me and told me we had a chance to win,” she said. “So I went out in the 400 and tried my best. I tried to win, but I had never done the 400 before.” The Woods Cross senior knows she left it all out on the track. “It was better than I would have guessed,” Hansen said of her performance in the 400. “But not as I would have hoped.” Woods Cross finished with 51 points to finish second in the 5A girls standings, finishing four points ahead of Farmington, who was third with 47 points.
