The Mayors across Salt Lake County, me included, want you to SLOW DOWN when you’re driving in your car. You’ve probably heard this message before and you will continue to hear it, until it sinks in. We need to change our behaviors. We are in the 100 deadliest days of summer which refers to traffic fatalities. Many of the deadly accidents are caused by excessive speed. Yes, our cars are frankly designed to go fast, but they can also go slow. Beyond the basic safety message of slowing down, there are other reasons why you should want to slow down:

1. Slow Down in Murray for better fuel efficiency. Your car gets better gas mileage when you drive more slowly. 1. Slow Down in Murray for reduced air pollution. Since you don’t burn as much gas at slower speeds, it stands to reason that you put smaller amounts of toxins in the air from your tailpipe. 1. Slow Down in Murray for stress reduction. Set your cruise control to the speed limit and stop worrying about how to pass others on the road or worry about speed traps! 1. Slow Down in Murray for reduced wear and tear. At slower speeds, your tires last longer, your car engine lasts longer, your brakes last longer. 1. Slow Down in Murray to save money. How? Fines are expensive and when you receive a citation for speeding, it also affects your insurance premiums. 1. Slow Down in Murray to save lives. Your reaction time is compromised at excessive speeds. Going slower might give you enough time to avoid an accident.

The cities within Salt Lake County all support this cause and agree it is worthy to promote together across the entire County. They are combining efforts to promote the call to slow down. Sandy City Mayor Monica Zoltanski spearheaded the effort. “The rate of fatal accidents is rising in cities across the valley. Many of these accidents are due to excessive speed. Law enforcement is working hard to enforce traffic laws, but they cannot be everywhere. It is critical we all do our part and slow down. Getting to a destination late is better than never. I’m so grateful that other mayors throughout the county have thrown their support and their voices behind this effort. Together we can amplify the message of reducing speeds and hopefully make a difference in the lives of our residents.” Thank you, Mayor Zoltanski, for your leadership on this effort. I am so impressed that all the mayors and chiefs of police in the county are joining together to get everyone to slow down. We’re all guilty of speeding. But if we can slow down, we will be able to save lives and that’s the most important thing we can do, is save lives. My hope is that as you’re driving one of the neighborhood streets or bigger thoroughfares in Murray, you will think about lifting your foot off the pedal a bit and SLOW DOWN. Think of driving 5…leave 5 minutes earlier, go 5 mph slower and allow 5 more feet of following distance. Let’s get through these 100 deadliest days with no fatalities! Thank you to all our residents for making Murray a great place to live.
