VALENTINE’S SWEETHEARTS 2024

Brent and Dotty Evanson

Arne and Cathie Jones

Brent and Dotty Evanson met just over 47 years ago when Brad Thorpe set his Canadian friend going to BYU up with his cousin who had recently finished school there. The blind date went well and about six months later the two were sealed in the Ogden Utah temple. Blind date to married in about six months may seem fast, but Dotty has always said, “you’ll know what you need to know when you need to know it” and Brent and Dotty both knew they had found the person they wanted to spend eternity with and didn’t see the sense in wasting any time. After they were married, Brent continued working on his master’s degree at BYU and Dotty taught school in Spanish Fork. The two decided once Brent finished school,

Arne was an assistant coach at Utah State in Logan, Utah while Cathie lived in Riverside, Utah. They went on a date that was arranged by friends and the rest is history. They were married in April of 1981 in the Logan Utah Temple. After getting married, they resided in Logan, Utah while Arne continued to coach football and Cathie was working at a bank. A few years later they moved to Malad where Arne would continue to coach football and wrestling, and Cathie would transfer to one of the local banks. In 1988, some job opportunities opened for the couple, and they moved North to Pocatello, Idaho. Pocatello was home for Arne and Cathie and their three beautiful children Court, Morgan, and Rocky for seven years. In 1995, Arne and Cathie moved their family back to Malad to take over the family farm that had been in the family for over 5 generations. Cathie still worked in Pocatello, commuting back and forth every day. Their children adjusted to the small-town life, and all would graduate from Malad High School. Arne and Cathie raised three wonderful children that are all successful in their fields and are married to amazing spouses. Between their three kids, they have 10 Grandkids. Currently Arne has about a year and half left on his term for Sheriff and Cathie can retire anytime, we think they may be waiting to retire together so they can travel

ED “The Outlaw” Jones inducted into NHRA Hall of fame It’s true that there are a lot of people in Oneida County who recognize Ed Jones. Born and raised here, he’s also been a local business fixture at E.T. Kustom Sales downtown right next to City Hall (where he and Wendy also spent many years in various roles with the Chamber of Commerce), and just down the road from the Fire Station, where he has served as a fireman for the last almost 45 years. Friendly, funny, and blessed with infectious smiles, Ed and his wife Wendy are community leaders of the sort that eventually everyone gets to know. But it turns out that Ed is also a familiar face to a much larger group of people—fans of drag racing and “wheelstanders” all over the world. His Jelly Belly Stage Coach (which has also been a Jolly Rancher stagecoach in the past), along with his two other wheelstanding vehicles, have delighted and amazed audiences from Germany and Japan all the way to Main Street, Malad. “Wheelstander” is the name for a specialized drag racing vehicle that races on its two rear wheels. Because of the unusual angle at which this puts the driver relative to the road, and the relationship between the car’s ability to drive in such a configuration and the brakes required to do so, it takes a lot of skill and practice to become adept at it. And Ed Jones has not only become adept, but one of the world’s small number of drivers capable of operating a machine like he does. After a career spanning four decades, Ed was recognized by the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) with his induction into the 2023 NHRA Hall of Fame at a ceremony ED “THE OUTLAW” JONES On Page 3

NEWS IN BRIEF US and UK Strike targets in Yemen

After stating two weeks ago that the U.S. had plans to retaliate against a drone attack that resulted in the loss of three servicemembers, the plan became apparent when it was revealed that U.S. and U.K. forces had struck a number of sites in Yemen linked to the attack. Since Friday’s U.S. response, 3 more attacks have been launched on western forces, believed to have been coordinated by Iranian military forces and affiliated militia groups. The State Department has been in talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about regional coordination to bring about a cessation of military hostilities in the area, and methods for providing humanitarian relief in Gaza and Israel.

King Charles III announces cancer diagnosis

Less than a year after his official coronation in May of 2023, the United Kingdom’s King Charles III, 75, revealed that he had been undergoing treatment for an enlarged prostate. As a result of his medical recovery, the King will be stepping back from outward facing, in-person duties for the next few months. “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” a palace spokesperson stated on Monday. In the event that Charles requires more significant medical intervention, his oldest son Prince William is the next in line to fill the role.

More Snow and wind on the way

After a relatively mild weekend, more snow mixed with rain is in the forecast for the week, with wind picking up as the weekend approaches. As a result of repeated freezing and thawing, road conditions are likely to require some caution. Make sure to plan extra time for any trips out of town, and equip your vehicle with emergency supplies in the event of potential stranding. Numerous slide-offs have been reported in the county, as well as surrounding areas since the current weather front arrived.
