Mayor’s Youth Council sworn in For the first time in many years, Malad City is excited to welcome a newly constituted Youth Council into its fold as an advisory group. The group will provide input to the city council on issues important to the youth in the valley, as well as help support and organize city functions in the upcoming year. The League of Idaho Cities, a partner organization with the Association of Idaho Cities, has encouraged cities across the state to actively engage their young people through such organizations. “It’s an important way for younger people to understand how city and local government works,” Mayor Joan Hawkins, who spearheaded the formation of the group, said. “We need them to be involved in what happens in our town, and we also find that young people have a lot of great ideas that wouldn’t necessarily occur to us.” According to Mayor Hawkins, the growth of youth councils throughout the state has been substantial, with Caldwell being noted as an especially effective example. “By next year, a majority of towns are going to have their own groups, and we think it will be a great thing to have
here,” she said. For several years, there has been interest on the part of the council in creating a mechanism for getting feedback on city projects from those who are most likely to be participants in the games, events, and concerts that the city often plans. This year is the first time all the pieces have really come together to kickstart the process. “We’ve had a council in the past, and I think we’re all excited to have one again. I can’t wait to start working with these kids,” Hawkins said. After spending time speaking with the graduating classes of Malad Middle School and students at Malad High School, Mayor Hawkins recruited a total of eleven students to serve as the first class, including representatives from ninth to twelfth grade. Members of the council must be students enrolled at MHS, with at least a C average. The requirements for students who join the council are to complete four hours of community service per semester, participate in volunteering throughout the community, and attend at least one city council meeting a session. While the council is in its

early stages at the moment, plans for how it might work alongside the city will be more fully put in place after the group meets officially for the first time on July 27. The meeting will elect officers, establish bylaws, and determine how it plans to interact with the city council. One provisional idea is to have a representative of the Youth Council in attendance for City Council meetings, which would allow members a close-up look at the deliberation process used in governmental meetings, and keep members informed on issues relevant to citizens. The Youth Council is also
likely to be involved in the planning and execution of various activities throughout the year hosted by the city, including the Fourth of July celebrations, various concerts throughout the year, the Easter egg hunt, and other community events, as well as ongoing issues related to Parks and Recreation. The first Youth Council’s roster includes: Porter Kimberling, Cambree Howe, Katie Marble, Mattilyn Jacobson, Mathilde Dickerson, Aubree Palmer, Tylee Venable, Marinn Brown, Kala Layton, Aubrey Corbett, and Adi Schow.

NEWS IN BRIEF Britain sees highest recorded temperature
A heatwave currently scorching western Europe has seen a series of wildfires tear through France and Spain. A total of 35,000 acres had been burned as of the beginning of the week, leading to evacuations in southern France. Sweltering temperatures have also worsened drought conditions in Portugal. In the U.K., temperatures have reached levels which have no recorded precedent. Temperatures across much of the country are expected to reach as high as 43 Celsius (109 Farenheit), and have been hovering in the low 40s (100s) for the last week. The heatwave is expected to abate somewhat by mid week, but temperatures will remain abnormally high.
Dust storm leads to fatal pileup in Montana
A massive dust storm last Friday evening is being blamed for a visibility blackout that led to a 21 car accident on I-90 in Montana. At around 4:30 p.m., wind gusts of up to 60 mph created chaos along a roughly mile long stretch of freeway during peak summer driving. Six people, including two children, died as a result of the numerous crashes, which required six hours to clear, and help from numerous agencies around Hardin.
Gas prices fall across the nation
After an extended period of record-setting high gas prices, average prices across the country are noticeably falling. One in five gas stations in the U.S. are now reported to have reached prices below $4/gallon, and most states have seen prices fall to below $5/ gallon. Idaho, which generally has prices near the higher end of the national average, has seen most locations fall to the high four dollar mark as of this week. Experts warn that this price reduction may be more of an intermission than a “new normal,” though the prices are tied to volatile elements in the global economy that remain difficult to predict in the long term. Even as an “intermission” the relief is still welcome.

An Indiana man was driving by a house in Lafayette, Indiana when he saw a house engulfed in flames. Nicholas Bostic entered the house to see whether anyone was still inside, and found a house full of sleeping children. After alerting four of the children and escorting them to safety, he was informed that another remained inside. Braving the flames, Bostic returned inside and eventually located a fifth child, too young to walk. Breaking a window with his hand, Bostic was able to jump to safety with the girl, who was not seriously injured. Bostic himself required emergency care for a sliced tendon in his arm and smoke inhalation. He is deservedly being hailed as a hero.
Prehistoric lobster named after ISU researcher
Pemphix krumenackeri was discovered in the Paris Canyon fossil site in Bear Lake County. The site itself was discovered by ISU and CEI adjunct professor L.J. Krumenacker, who is also an affiliate curator of the Idaho Museum of Natural History and a Blackfoot middle school teacher. The authors of the article in which the 250 million year old crustacean was named decided to honor Krumenacker for his contributions to the field, and his initial identification of the rich fossil bed in which it was discovered.
