NEWS IN BRIEF Former Japanese PM Assassinated

Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, 67, was shot during a speech last week, by a disaffected man who believed him to be connected to an unknown group. The man, who apparently manufactured or acquired a homemade shotgun, was arrested afterward. Japan has an extremely low incidence of fatal shootings (nine in 2018; 2 so far this year, compared to over 39,000 in the U.S.), making this a particularly shocking incident. Abe was known for his economic push to stabilize Japan’s economy through aggressive stimulus to all sectors of the economy and historically low interest rates.

Gran Fondo returns to town over the weekend The 11th annual Cache Valley Gran Fondo made its annual halfway stop in Malad once again on Saturday, July 9. Due to the intense heat predicted by weather services for the weekend, the race began slightly earlier than usual as the sun began to rise in Logan. The earliest riders, who had started at between 6:00 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. averaging 19-25 miles per hour, made their way into Malad around 8:00 a.m., where they were greeted by the volunteers from Nell J. Redfield Memorial Hospital. The hospital is going on its ninth year of involvement with the race, which sees well over a thousand participants each year in four divisions, including the signature 100 mile round trip from the Cache Valley, up through Weston canyon, and back down to Logan. Although no exact count of the racers who stopped off in Malad was kept, roughly three hundred or so riders were anticipated. Along the course of the race, support services such as hydration stations, medical assistance, and road safety updates are critical to the successful functioning of the event, which is nationally

recognized on the Gran Fondo circuit. This year’s race brought over 1,300 racers out, with several hundred of them participating in the longest circuit, the grueling 104 mile loop. Malad sits almost exactly halfway through the race, making it the most important stop along the arduous path. While the most elite athletes typically spend little time off the road

Champion Wrestler—Malad’s Drake Morrison He may not be Hulk Hogan or Rulon Gardner, but Malad has its own champion wrestler to cheer on and take pride in his accomplishments. It's well known that it takes incredible talent, drive and passion to become champion in any arena. That same talent, drive and passion that has taken Malad’s own Drake Morrison wrestling across the nation to go head to head against the country’s toughest opponents, where he has not only competed, but dominated the wrestling brackets and became a national champion with a final season record of 100 wins and only three losses. Most recently, Morrison participated in the USA Wrestling Kids Na-

The first images from the James Webb Space Telescope were released early this week, giving scientists and the world a glimpse into the farthest reaches of space yet seen by humans. In the press conference to announce the release, NASA administrator Bill Nelson quoted Carl Sagan’s famous line “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” He followed it up by adding, “I think those words are becoming reality.” The images reveal a “star nursery” called the “Cosmic Cliffs” where baby stars are shown in their early stages of formation, over 7,600 light years away, as well as images of whole galaxies interacting with one another.

The championship tournaments featured both Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles of wrestling, those styles exhibited in the Olympic games. Around the world, athletes compete in three different styles of wrestling, Freestyle, Folkstyle and Greco-Roman. The value of the U.S. dollar and the British pound have reached the same point for the first time in over twenty years. While this is good news for Americans planning to visit Britain in the near future (generally the pound trades above the dollar), it represents a potential problem for future global markets, as foreign investment in the dollar against a sliding pound will potentially increase inflationary pressure and decrease the overall stability of the dollar as an international currency.

Chad Christensen sued by constituents over Facebook

Representative Chad Christensen of Iona, who formerly represented Oneida County before the legislative districts were redesigned for the next election, is being sued by five constituents from his current district for blocking them from being able to view his Facebook page. Those involved in the lawsuit claim that the block constitutes an abrogation of their Constitutional right to free speech, and to be able to engage in a public forum on governmental issues. Christensen claims in response that the page is primarily a campaign oriented resource, and not an official governmental one. There is not a great deal of case law on public officials and social media, though former President Donald Trump did lose a lawsuit brought by those blocked by his Twitter account. However, Rep. Cheri Reisch won a ruling from the federal court using a similar argument to Christensen’s in 2019.

Weather for the Week

While not quite as hot on average as last year, July’s temperatures are living up to their reputation. For the upcoming week, temperatures will range from the mid to high nineties during the daytime hours, and reach an almost uniform nighttime low of 63, according to the most recent forecast from the National Weather Service.
