A Patriotic Fourth in the Valley Oneida County celebrates Our Country with variety of community events As it always does, Malad put together a fun-filled weekend of events to celebrate the 4th of July weekend. The Valley was filled with many travelers this past week and weekend to participate in annual activities to celebrate America. July 2 The kids started off the weekend's events on July 2 with the Kids' Parade. Following its typical route along Main Street from the Drive Inn and then down Bannock to the Malad City Park, kids and parents packed the street on bikes, ATVs, and other recreational vehicles. Their vehicles were decked out in Fourth of July decorations and American flags to commemorate the holiday. Activities at the park began with the Snake River New Horizons Band who performed at the Amphitheater before the Preliminaries for Malad's Got Talent. The group performed covers of popular songs including Sweet Caroline, Brown Eyed Girl, a medley of Beatles songs, and many others. The Malad's Got Talent Preliminaries included many great talents with many singers, dancers and musicians, along with a drummer, and even a Color Guard Routine. Judges for the event included Tami Smith, Kevin Jeppesen, and Christie Oja. They scored participants in several categories to determine which five from each age group would advance to the final on Monday the Fourth. At the conclusion of Malad's Got Talent opening night, the crowd moved to Bannock Street in front of City Hall to enjoy music from the Rough Stock band. Band members are Harry Sherman, Jimi James Schaub, Elly Peterson, Trent Porter, and Terry Morris.

NEWS IN BRIEF Deadly parade shooting in Illinois

A mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois left seven dead and shocked the generally safe Chicago suburb over the Fourth of July holiday. The suspect, who fired at least 70 rounds from a rifle, fled the scene and was later apprehended by police. At least 39 people were hospitalized with various injuries, some of them related to the panicked stampede which occurred in the immediate aftermath. Countless lives were saved by the quick action of law enforcement and paramedics, but far too many were lost by the actions of a killer, whose motivations are as yet unknown.

Oil drops to under $100 a barrel

For the first time since April, the price of crude oil sunk below the benchmark $100/barrel mark, losing 10% of its price over the last week. Gas prices across the country have also started to see a slight decline in many areas to a new national average of $4.80/gallon, though not yet in Idaho, where average prices generally outpace the national average. Most analysts predict that the price of fuel oil and gasoline will stay fairly consistent until the fall.

Sweden and Finland on track for NATO membership

In a historic move, NATO announced that the two countries had accepted NATO’s invitation to join the organization, extended at last week’s summit in Madrid. The move by the two, which they have long been reticent about, was spurred by Russia’s aggressive invasion of Ukraine. Russia, predictably, denounced the move. The membership of Sweden and Finland would bring the total number of NATO powers to 32.

They performed a fun mix of country music perfect for singing and dancing along. The Street Dance brought out many community members excited to enjoy the music and shake a leg. Swing dancing, line dancing, and even a Conga line highlighted the evening. July 4

The Fourth of July Celebration started early with the Cannonade, the Fun Run, and the Pancake Breakfast. Those in the Malad area were awoken to the six o'clock cannons that announce the beginning of festivities in the Valley. Next, members of the community had the opportunity to join

in the Fun Run held by the Malad Distinguished Young Women's program. The Independence Day Parade was filled with floats showcasing this year's theme: "There's No Place A PATRIOTIC FOURTH IN THE VALLEY On Page 2

30- year- old Rudy Gobert, who joined the Jazz nine years ago, has been traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a deal for four future first round draft picks (2023, 2025, 2027, 2029) and a number of role players. The Jazz are hoping to build a younger roster around Donovan Mitchell, and follows the trade of Royce O’Neale to the Nets. Players heading to the Jazz are Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, and Walker Kessler.

Volunteers of the Year Award: Dotty Evanson, Roxanne Albretsen, and Carla Williams This year’s Volunteers of the Year were the force behind preserving the historic Co-op Building as the landmark of downtown Malad. The restoration of the Coop has a long way to go before many dreams and aspirations for the building are realized, but without Dotty Evanson, Roxanne Albretsen, and Carla Williams, the restoration of the Co-op likely would have

never begun. Dotty Thorpe Evanson’s passion for preserving the Co-op made her volunteer to be the Chair of the Coop Restoration Committee. She was able to organize troops of Malad volunteers to clean out decades of old merchandise and trash from the building’s three levels. Her right-hand helpers were her sister Roxanne Thorpe Albretsen and her friend

Carla Goddard Williams. These three women made possible the vision of turning the oldest department store in the state of Idaho into future City Offices, a community meeting room, maybe an art gallery, and commercial space. Already the building has started to be used for such events as the Oneida Quilters annual show and Art on Main. Dotty Evanson was born

and raised in Malad and has lived here her entire life except when at BYU, where she met her future husband Brent, and when she served with Brent when he was the Mission President for the Macon Georgia Mission. She taught elementary school for many years until she became the principal VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR AWARDS On Page 9

Tom Hanks disappointed by lack of real ‘Buzz’ in ‘Lightyear’

The decision to hire Chris Evans, rather than Tim Allen, to voice the character of Buzz Lightyear in the Pixar animated film “Lightyear” was not celebrated by Tom Hanks (Woody), who regretted not being able to go “head-to-head” with Allen in the film. The film is not a continuation of the Toy Story storyline, but rather a film about the character of Buzz Lightyear (not the toy) himself, which potentially explains the descision to someone.
