Roe vs Wade Effectively Overturned

The Malad Valley Men's Welsh Choir: Jim Christiansen, Mark Jones, Bob Crowther, David Harris, Steve Ward, A.C. Black, Lewis Dredge, George Alger

Welsh Festival Returns for 2022! After a two year delay due to COVID, the Malad Valley Welsh Festival returned to mark its 16th year in fine fashion, with a full range of the traditional events over the weekend, including the seating of the 2022 Bard Lamonte John, Welsh harpist Kathy Clayton, the kids’ poetry competition, several impressive musical performances, the Quilt show, games, food, activities, and the 140th anniversary celebration of the Presbyterian “Little Church on the Hill.” The Festival was supported and organized by the Malad Valley Welsh Committee chaired by Jean Thomas, and saw hundreds of attendees in attendance over its three days. Before the poetry portion of the afternoon was begun, the fiction winner was presented. Former Bard Jan Crowther Myers read the work “Melancholy Air,” before it was revealed to be the work of Bob Crowther. The story largely concerns a visit to Malad by a Welsh choir in 1915, after which the boat returning the choir to Wales tragically sank. Crowther was named the Fiction Winner of the Festival. Cory Webster, Bard of the 2019 Welsh Festival, was finally allowed to relinquish his title as the reigning bard. Due to COVID, he has been in the position since his anointing three years ago. Webster, from the Haywire Ranch in Downey, “has been simply wonder-

ful at sharing his time” with the Welsh Festival’s activities in the meantime, according to Jean Thomas. Webster presided over this year’s poetry competitions, as well as last year’s awarding of the Scott prize. In the tradition of the Welsh Eisteddfod, poets submit their work under a pseudonym, which is not know to any of the judges until the winner is announced at the seating ceremony. The name is read out three times, after which the author raises and is escorted to the Bard’s Chair to be seated. This year, the name “Llangyfelach Lad” was called out according to the tradition, WELSH FESTIVAL On Page 13

Gary and Sherma Shepherd Named July 4 Parade Grand Marshals Each year, the Fourth of July Parade celebrates a local individual or individuals who represent the heart of the community. This year, that honor goes to the proprietors of Malad’s downtown landmark the Dude Ranch, Gary and Sherma Shepherd. Gary was born in Malad, and went to school here while working for his parents at the Dude Ranch, which they opened on July 3, 1945, just in time for that year’s Fourth celebration. After high school, Gary decided to attend trade school for training as an electrician in Pocatello. While working there at a service station, he met his wife Sherma, who grew up in a house on Pocatello Creek. In 1969, the couple was married, and moved permanently to Malad. In 1978, they purchased the Dude Ranch and have been run-

ning it ever since. In that time, Gary and Sherma have seen a lot of changes come to the valley, and especially to Main Street where the Dude has served as a strong anchor to the community’s downtown area. They reminisced about all the businesses that have come and gone over that time, including Jack’s Books, Ernest’s barbershop, the Star Theatre, Tommy’s Lunch, Davis Shoe repair, and many others. The business of running a restaurant has also changed over the intervening years, and even more so in the last several. The Dude Ranch is an iconic fixture of Malad city, so much so that many times people visit town from far flung areas just to eat there. People who were raised here and GRAND MARSHALS On Page 2

51 migrants were found deceased in a trailer outside of San Antonio, Texas. Autopsies are being performed, but it is believed that the lives were lost as a result of the sweltering conditions, which were in the low 100s last week. Sixteen people were rescued from the trailer alive, but with severe heat exhaustion and dehydration. There was no air-conditioning or water found in the trailer. “This is the worst human smuggling event in the United States. This sheds light on how dangerous human smuggling is,” the Homeland Security agent in charge of the investigation stated.

101 year-old woman reunited with a painting stolen by the Nazis

Charlotte Bischoff van Heemskerck was forced into hiding with her family in 1940 when the Nazis invaded the Netherlands. The painting had been stored for safekeeping in a bank vault which was looted. The painting, a portrait of Steven Wolters by Caspar Netscher, had been previously hung in the children’s hospital where her father worked. The painting was located by the Commission for Looted Art, and returned to the family by a private collector who had ended up with it.

Utah Jazz hire new coach

Boston assistant Will Hardy has agreed to a five-year deal to be the Utah Jazz’s next. At 34, Hardy will be the youngest coach in the NBA, and will be among youngest coaches in NBA history. Hardy himself is even younger than two current Jazz players, Rudy Gay and Mike Conley. Hardy will be replacing Quin Snyder, who unexpectedly stepped down as the head coach after eight season with the Jazz, and a 372-264 record. Hardy spent most of his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs.

In a landmark ruling last week, the Supreme Court effectively ruled that Roe vs. Wade, which has been in effect for 50 years, does provide a constitutional guarantee for abortion services. 13 states including Idaho currently have “trigger laws” which immediately went into effect after the ruling, restricting (and in some states completely outlawing) access to abortions. A draft version of the ruling had been leaked earlier in the summer, though it was unclear how far the court intended to go its decision. Several other high profile cases are still to be decided before the end of the court session.
