Malad Youth perform Calamity Jane for Community at Elementary Auditorium

This past weekend Calamity Jane opened and transformed the Malad Elementary Auditorium into the wild west of 1870’s Deadwood, South Dakota. Calamity Jane showcased many of Malad’s talented youth, starting with the lead, Raegan Smith (Calamity Jane), who brings an impressive level of excitement and fun to the role. Her counterpart Joe Daniels (Wild Bill Hickcok) did not miss a beat, sparring with his character's true love. All of the supporting cast, from the fun interactions between Clara Huckaby (Millie) and Loralee Teeple (Mistress Miller) to the mistaken actress Gavin Price (Francis Fryer), brought laughter and joy to the stage. Bridger deJong, the witty bartender named Joe, spread his time commanding the audience and managing the saloon. Mentioning the talent in Malad, one could not miss the talent of the orchestra led by Christine Smith, and including members Britta Sperry, Braeden Farnes, Travis Harrison, Carsyn Jacobsen, Kaylee Jones, Brinn Chipman, Connor Worrel, Austin Hepworth, and Erin Oberg. The audience responded with enthusiasm to seeing the orchestra in action and seeing all of their talent on display. Their years of practice showed in the upbeat and well-executed music. The orchestra played a fun variety of songs that the cast brought to life, from “Love you Dearly” performed by Whitney Palmer (Katie Brown) and Daniel Lenaghen (Lt. Danny Gilmartin) to a favorite, “Careless with the Truth,” performed by the ensemble. The audience was not

just given one love story, but three. Maggie Willie’s (Susan) smile and Gavin Price’s (Francis Fryer) fun loving personality were electric together on the stage as their own love story unfolded. While Whitney Palmer (Katie Brown), whose beauty wins over the town of Deadwood and the audience, has her own struggle choosing between her new friend and her new romance Daniel Lenaghen (Lt. Danny Gilmartin), who has also caught the eye of Calamity. The hard work that was done behind the scenes was obvious, a testament to Directors David and Chalae Teeples. In the playbill, the Teeples mentioned that they requested all of the teen’s parents to donate five hours per child to the production in some capacity- so this show represents many in the community. Presbyterian Church to Celebrate 140th anniversary

The celebration of the 140th anniversary of Malad’s “Little Church on the Hill” will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2022, in conjunction with the Malad Valley Welsh Festival. Everyone is invited to the special evening program at the Presbyterian Church. The program will be presented at both 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. The Malad Presbyterian Church was the first church building in Malad. The Reverend Sheldon Jackson is known as the missionary in the 1860s who stood on the banks of the Missouri River and realized that there was no Presbyterian Church for 1000 miles. He made it his mission to establish hundreds of Presbyterian churches in little towns

all over the West. One of those churches was in the village of Malad in 1870. In 1882 Reverend Edward M. Knox arrived in Malad and started building the present church and the adjacent Mission School, which was the only school in Malad Valley. In 1908 the school closed because the first public school had opened in 1900. The Presbyterian church bell arrived in Malad in 1884 and has rung to announce church services as well as celebrations, fires and floods. Members of the Presbyterian Church, Interfaith Council and Malad Valley Welsh Festival committee are planning a program that will feature the history, memories and music of this historic building.

Oneida County Interfaith Council Presents the Easter Sunrise Service

Malad's Presbyterian Church will celebrate its 140th anniversary this year

On Easter Sunday, April 17 at 7:30 a.m. at the Covered Picnic Area at the Malad City Park, the Interfaith Council will present a program to celebrate the greatest day in history, when Jesus Christ rose from death, defeated darkness and bathed the world in stunning resurrection light. In 1732, a group of young Moravian men in Hernhut, Saxony,

Germany held the first sunrise service. They gathered at their cemetery at sunrise to worship the memory of the women who went to the tomb on the first Easter morning and discovered it empty, and to praise the Risen Lord. The Moravian immigrants brought the custom to EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE On Page 3
