NEWS IN BRIEF
Devastating volcanic eruption expected in Iceland Iceland, known to many as the “land of fire and ice” is facing an ecological crisis. Following thousands of earthquakes in the vicinity of the town of Grindavík on the southwestern coast, residents have been evacuated, businesses have been shuttered, and experts are closely monitoring the situation. A large sinkhole has opened up in the middle of the town and has the potential to be a vent for the magma that is currently very active beneath the surface. If the volcano erupts, the entire town of Grindavík could suffer massive damage, if not entire destruction.

The 5th grade students of Malad Elementary School presented the school’s 35th annual Veterans’ Day Program on Thursday, November 9. The tradition of this memorial program began with teacher Debbie Horsley and music specialist Helen Ward collaborating to have the 4th grade present a patriotic program to honor Oneida County veterans. The Ernest W. Jones Post #65 of the American Legion has been a major part of the program since the beginning. Because of COVID, the 4th graders of that year would have lost the opportunity to present a Veterans’ Day program, and so those students presented a program the next year when they were in the 5th grade. Now the 5th grade students honor the veterans on this special day. The program was presented by the students three times: on Wednesday for all students of the school and in the morning and evening of Thursday for parents, family members, and the community. The script of the program, entitled “Honoring All Who Served,” was written by the elementary school music

Changes in the County Prosecutor’s office At Monday’s County Commissioners meeting, the board conducted interviews with several attorneys and firms to fill the prosecutor’s position in the county until the election in 2024. The firm of Fuller and Fuller, based in Preston, was selected as the firm that was best able to meet the county’s legal needs. Due to the appointment/hiring process for a replacement prosecutor, the county was in the position of determining which range of services offered by those who applied for the position matched with the job requirements best. Some of the considerations included proximity, experience, and ability to commit to the county. None of the firms or attorneys were local, with candidate Rocky Wixom currently working in Fremont county, Peters Wells being based in Burley, and Fuller and Fuller being located in CHANGES IN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have overtaken Al-Rantisi hospital in Gaza and showed embedded news affiliates evidence of what it believes to be an abandoned Hamas armory, with weapons and munitions left behind. While as yet unconfirmed, if it turns out to be an actual Hamas armory, the find would prove that Hamas is indeed using health facilities and hospitals as a shield for its underground operations.

Museums dedicated to recovered artifacts dot the globe, and the wreck itself has prompted many to risk their lives just to go and see it.
