FFA Auction raises money for local chapter The annual FFA Alumni and Supporters Auction Fundraiser was held at the Event Center on Monday Evening. The event is the primary fundraising activity of MHS’s FFA club, and featured donations from a large number of individuals, businesses and organizations. Alumni and Supporters Vice President Cooper Daniels announced that last year’s event, including the live auction, silent auction, and donations, had raised more than $14,000 for the club. He explained that the funds are used for travel expenses, material supplies, scholarships, and other things that help keep the program vibrant and growing. “We are very excited to see these opportunities for the youth to grow, and we thank you for being here at this auction,” Daniels said. The evening featured a taco bar, sponsored by Malad Bowling, Mike and Avis Semrad, and Thomas Market. FFA members were in full force to serve food and help display and distribute auction items. The FFA called its meeting to order with an official roll call. Members of the leadership recited the responsibilities of their offices, and reiterated the

NEWS IN BRIEF Government shutdown averted for now

With literally just hours to go before a government shutdown, a bipartisan deal to continue funding for 45 days was reached. The deal was reached with the aid of Democrats after Speaker Kevin McCarthy dropped his party’s demands for stringent budget cut as a part of the bill. The move has put McCarthy at odds with the House GOP, which led Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to introduce a removal vote against the speaker onto the floor. A motion to block the ouster vote were unsuccessful, leading to a floor fight about the future of the speaker’s position. Whether McCarthy loses his position or not, the budget will once again become the focus of congressional politics when the 45 day funding bill expires in November.

principles of the FFA Organization. As a group, the members explained that the FFA’s mission is “To practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities and responsibilities, and promote those qualities of leadership which FFA members should possess.” Afterward, the meeting was declared open for the transaction of business, and to attend to any other matters that were presented. “We are gathered here as friends, family and com-

munity supporters to enjoy a great dinner and support the Malad FFA organization in the 3rd annual FFA Live Auction and dinner,” FFA President Kendyl Reeder said. “As the Malad president, I sincerely thank you and every one of you for being here tonight. I am a personal recipient of the generosity and support over the past years. Your support has provided many travel opportunities, project support and classroom experience that I would not be able to

receive anywhere else than in the school. Thank you for all you do for me and every other FFA member.” After the list of scholarships which had been provided by the FFA last year were recounted, the live auction began, as the silent auction continued in the background. Many of the items in the auction were created by FFA members, including chain lamps, a variety of tables, and a large FFA AUCTION On Page 12

Attorney Cody Brower named District Six judge County Attorney Cody Brower was recently appointed by Governor Brad Little to fill the seat vacated by retiring Sixth District judge Mitchell Brown, who is chambered in Soda Springs. After serving as the county attorney in Oneida for the last seven plus years, Brower will be leaving to serve in his new capacity in November. “I’m excited!” Brower said. “I love my job here, but I’m also really looking forward to this opportunity.” There are four district court judges in the sixth district, who oversee cases throughout the areas of Bannock, Bear Lake, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida, and Power counties. Brower himself will be over Caribou, Bear Lake, and Franklin counties. District courts handle civil cases which are valued at $10,000 and above, as well as criminal felony cases, while magistrate courts typically handle small claims, juvenile cases, child protection, child custody, family court issues and misdemeanors.

In Idaho, cases originate either with an indictment by a grand jury, or a filing by a district attorney. “Grand juries are fairly rare in Idaho,” Brower says. “In most cases, an officer files a report and request for charges to the office, and I determine what charges should be charged and file the criminal complaint with those charges. At the magistrate level, the defendant has the right to have the court find that there is probable cause to proceed. If that happens, then the trial is held bound over to the district court, which is where I’ll be hearing those cases.” Brower discussed some of the differences between his current position and his new role. “I really enjoy the trial aspect of it, so I’m excited to be a trial court judge. I haven’t dealt as much with civil issues, though they have increasingly come up here. As a district court judge, I’ll be called on to handle types of cases I haven’t had as much experience with in the past. I feel very comfortable

Little launches Idaho Launch

A $75 million dollar granting program for Idaho’s high school graduates seeking funding for postsecondary education was officially kicked off Tuesday morning. Applications for the program opened at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and within the first few minutes at least 19 students had signed up. The program hopes to provide postsecondary support to around 10,000 students, with a priority for those who are seeking to enter the workforce in high-demand professions. Average recipients will receive up to $8,000 toward four year, two year, community colleges, or career and technical training programs. High School seniors can apply to the program through April 15.

National Alert Test Wednesday

A national test of the federal government’s Emergency Alert system Wireless Emergency Alert was conducted Wednesday at 12:20 Mountain Time. The nationwide test is the seventh of its type conducted involving cell phone numbers. While some people are still confused or alarms at the notification, FEMA and other federal agencies that rely on communications technology to provide information to the public hope that the notifications will become a useful method for distributing information quickly across the country. County Attorney Cody Brower named to new position as District six judge.

with the civil rules and my abilities in that area, and I am excited to take on a lot of those cases at this new level. Certainly, I’m go-

ing to have to draw on the experience of my fellow judges, and it’ll be a lot of ATTORNEY CODY BROWER On Page 10

After announcing her retirement earlier this year, longtime Senate Democrat Dianne Feinstein passed away at the age of 90. The authority to fill her seat belongs to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who appointed EMILY’s List President Laphonza Butler to the seat to fulfill the remainder of Feinstein’s term. A primary is already underway for the election, and has already been hotly contested. There is no word yet on whether Butler is interested in pursuing the seat during the next election.
